Full textThis thesis proposes an analysis of the way employees' careers evolve today. In a context marked by changes in position, employment, status or organization, careers are largely managed by the employees themselves who are made responsible of their choices of activity or career path. Indeed, the capacity of organizations to monitor employability or career paths in a sustainable manner is limited. The role they play has thus relaxed, reduced to encouraging or accompanying individual progressions. Employees are then led to react on their own, using relational networks from which they detect work opportunities, create links or develop their employability. They are therefore given more autonomy, assuming that they will have to integrate several organizations. This transformation of the object and the approaches of career management has thus led to a reversal of roles and responsibilities, thus introducing other actors as well as new organizational and individual approaches. This thesis then tries to bring a better understanding of these different dynamics that carry the professional paths. Exploratory interviews were conducted with thirty HR directors and managers and seventy employees. The aim is therefore to analyze the reality of the interactions and actors of the relationship between organizations, individuals and the institutional environment as well as career management practices in companies. These different investigations also make it possible to take seriously the question of career management’s integration in an organizational context and a more or less structuring institutional and relational framework

Full textThe globalization of markets and the growing international competitiveness in the last two decades have provided the entry of competing firms in the market, among which are small firms. Notably recognized for their social and economic importance, small enterprises of the industry, trade and services sectors of activity are, in numerical terms, the vast majority of businesses in Brazil. Given the importance of this object of research, this research has as general objective to explore the relationship between the innovation orientation and the internationalization patterns of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). To achieve this general objective, three specific objectives are drawn, which are the study of the internationalization process and patterns of small-and-medium-sized technology based firms and the study of dynamic capabilities for innovation inherent to the distinct internationalization process and patterns of the SMEs. The dynamic capabilities for innovation drive the technological innovation development, namely, innovation in products, processes and services, also fostering the non-technological innovation development, in other words, the Marketing and the organizational. In addition, the dynamic capabilities impact positively on the competitiveness of small businesses in domestic and international markets. The theoretical basis of this research lies in the Internationalization Theories, from the Behavioral School and the Economic School, for Business Internationalization, and the Innovation Theories, referring to the Dynamic Capabilities for Innovation. In order to better understand the object of research, for each topic there is a section concerning to the SMEs. The sectoral diversity of the participants firms contributed to the magnitude of results on the dynamic capabilities for innovation of Brazilian SMEs, as well as to identify their internationalization patterns. From a qualitative study, the analysis show that Brazilian SMEs seek to differentiate through innovation in their international operating markets. Regarding the internationalization patterns of Brazilian SMEs, they differ in some criteria than shown in the literature. Therefore, the analysis of dynamic capabilities for innovation shows that small Brazilian companies have high potential for the innovation development, even with the existence of external barriers. Concerning the internationalization, the SMEs of the study have specific international patterns, requiring, therefore, criteria approaches in relation to literature. As academic contributions, the research presents the analysis of dynamic capabilities for innovation related to the pattern of internationalization of Brazilian SMEs, presenting emerging variables from the research themes. Finally, as managerial contributions, the analysis of the cases enables verifying how firms seek to position themselves competitively in international markets

Full textOne of the main preoccupations of scholars and practitioners in the strategy field in the last decade has been to understand how firms achieve and maintain competitive advantage. Although academic support exists for theorizing renewal capability in both strategy and organizational research, empirical studies are scarce and mostly non-homogeneous, making advancing a common understanding difficult. This thesis is dedicated to filling this gap. We are keen to advance our understanding of the role of internationalization in the renewal capability of the firm. With this aim, we theorize both renewal and internationalization as processes and managerial orchestrations (strategies) “to capture, develop, share and optimize knowledge conducive to internationalization and superior performance” (Cavusgil & Knight, 2015: 10). The renewal process draws on practices of sensing and seizing strategic opportunities and renewing the business (Teece, 2007). The internationalization process, on the other hand, is studied across three dimensions: through dynamics in breadth and in depth (the path), and by the speed (the pace) of foreign expansion

Full textInternationalization represents a challenge for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) allowing them to access new markets and accelerate their growth. This research focuses on the implementation of gateway strategies, defined as the decision to establish a subsidiary abroad in order to access neighbouring markets. We refer to the literature related to SMEs’ internationalization – more specifically the processual and born global approaches – and to location strategies. The empirical study is twofold: (1) an exploratory phase concerning 18 SMEs identified through manufacturing SMEs located in the Rhône-Alpes region with at least one subsidiary abroad, (2) a multiple case study developed with five of them. We conducted 66 interviews and five non-participant observations. Our results show that the implementation of gateway strategies can be explained by motivations linked to companies, networks and gateway and target countries. We highlight the main actions developed as well as difficulties faced by SMEs using this type of approach. Our research emphasizes the key role of individuals and networks, as well as the existence of four main stages of implementation: (1) sporadic exports to target countries, (2) the analysis of target markets, (3) the harmonization of administrative procedures and information systems, (4) the increase of local commitment. Gateway strategies can facilitate foreign market entries while limiting the commitment of resources and exposure to risks. They represent a new form of internationalization allowing SMEs to value their assets in mature and emerging countries
