Full text28 mother-infant dyads were videotaped longitudinally at home to evaluate impacts of sides and the home-monitoring on the subsequent infant. Infant and maternal behaviors, maternal reactivity to infant crying and maternal sensitivity were analyzed when infants were 2, 4, 9 and 12 months of age. Behaviors were scored using a check-list sheet with a fixed time base of 5 sec. Distinctive patterns of dyadic interaction were identified between the experimental groups (g1: 8 monitor infants, g2: 10 non-monitor infants) and the control group (g3: 10 controls): the mothers of the first two group reacted to the infant distress more frequently, more quickly and more gestually than did control mothers, who answered less frequently and more visually. Generally, we attribute a protective role to the monitor, but the results suggest that the mothers of the monitor infants remained extremely anxious. At 2 and 4 months, the mothers of g1 provided the same behavioral pattern than mothers of g2; the only difference was in the nature of their behavior: the first preferred the visual modality whereas the others preferred the tactile modality. In fact, the mothers of g2 were more reactive, more intrusive and less effective than mothers of g1. At 9 and 12 months the mothers of g1 became more sensitive, so we can think that home-monitoring is helpful. But the analysis of the infant behaviors and the differences with the control group indicate the importance of the infant contributions to interaction, and underline the absolute necessity to support these extremely anxious mothers of g1 and g2

Full textPostnatal depression, very frequent during the postpartum period, is likely to influence child development ; few studies investigated the specific impact of early postnatal depressive symptoms (PNDS). To assess i) the impact of obstetrical complications (OC's) and of behavioral characteristics of the new-born on PNDS at 6 weeks ii) whether 6 week PNDS predict impaired child development independently from later maternal depressive symptoms iii) direct and indirect effects of these factors on child development at 6 months and 2 years. 598 dyads were followed up over 2 years, with repeated measures of maternal PNDS and child development. The children of mothers with PNDS at 6 w. Were more likely to present with poor cognitive outcome, association partly explained by the existence of maternal depressive symptoms over the follow-up. OC's and new-born behavioral characteristics didn't change these results. Causal pathways analyses show effects of new-born behavioral characteristics and of anxious disorders during pregnancy on child's development. Child developmental outcome might be influenced by both antenatal and postnatal maternal factors as well as by early infants’ factors

Full textResearches on early interactions and the baby question more and more intersubjectivity and subject definitions of which have become deficient in psychology. After having discovered a foundation of these in phenomenology, the hypothesis is made that the quality of early interactions (0-3 months) is correlated with the development of "consciousness of the Other one-as a baby", appearing in prenatal parental representations and underlain by foeto-parental relation, reflexive function and narrativity of parents, during pregnancy. This hypothesis was tested on 13 primiparous couples, followed frm the third month of pregnancy of the infant. From a qualitative approach and a desciptive methodology, the results show that early interactions (dyadics and triatics) are all the more appropriate as the parental consciousness of baby is developed. This "consciousness of baby" is formed all the more early during pregnancy that the parents have "integrated/balanced representations. The quality of these prenatal parental representaitons is linked to the harmonious development in the one hand of foeto-parental relation, in which the analogical aperception phenomenologic occupies a central place, on the other hand of narrativity and reflexive function of parents, which allow, or not, a growing incarnation of the subject in a position of narrator distanced from its narrative, in which, the other and the self exist, together. Finally, this research shows the necessity to consider parents-child realtion and its evolution, at the intrapsychic and the dyadic in the primary triangle

Full textA lot of studies have been published during the seventies, first in the anglo-saxon countries, then in france, to emphasize that the father's increased involvement turns out more and more frequent during the child's first years of life. Different expressions, "non-mother", opener agent, distance, permit outself to define what we call the paternal differentiation. Do the dialogues which raise, between the co-acting child and the sufficently present father, based on an interactional epigenesis process, permit the child to construct himself as a separated and sexued individual? our study's subject is to analyse the paternal differentiation effects on the subjectivation (individuation and socialization) and the sexual identity construction of the young child. In that way, we have built an investigative questionnaire and proposed a semi-directive interview to "primifathers", to select two groups : one of differentiated fathers, the other of non differentiated fathers, and we have presented them a bem androgyny questionnaire. Our study's sample is composed of 10 infants (5 boys and 5 girls) of differentiated fathers, and 10 infants (5 boys and 5 girls) of non differentiated fathers. The variable to explain about the young child subjectivation process is tested by an attachment questionnaire, a locomotion score and through three videotaped observations when the baby is aged of 9 months : an interactive play situation with the father (5mn), followed by a separation situation (1mn 30) and a play situation with a peer (2 mn). About the variable to explain relating to the sexuation process, we have operationalised it with the same children, aged of 20 months, through a p. S. A. I. (pre-school activities inventory), a corporal curiosity questionnaire, and three videotaped observations of sexued toys choice : cross-sex-stereotyped toys (5mn), sex-stereotyped toys (5mn) and both of therm (7mn)

Full textCytochrome c oxydase deficiency is a defect in the activity of the fourth complex respiratory chain, where ATP is a produced. Its characteristics, like in all respiratory chain disorders, are a phenotypic heterogeneity due to a double genetic origin and to the heteroplasmy phenomena, and ,affection touching organs that required a lot of energy like brain, heart, liver, kidney and skeletal muscles. Clinical and biochemical diagnosis are possible, whereas enzyme activity diagnosis is extremely rare. It is an under diagnosed pathology that all physicians should know because it seems to be the most frequent one in the hereditary metabolism defects. Based on a case report,we overview all that is known about this pathology, its diagnostics facilities and its poor therapeutics possibilities

Full textIn a first study (survey) conducted in two European regions (Dijon, France and Aalen, Germany) the level and rate of vegetable variety and the specific foods to use in a 2nd study were identified. In a 2nd study the effects of breast- or formula-feeding and different levels of vegetable variety (no, low or high) early in weaning on acceptance (intake and liking) of new foods were examined. Breastfeeding facilitated acceptance of new foods. Exposure to high variety early in weaning increased acceptance of all new vegetables and of meat and fish in Dijon. Frequency of change in vegetables (high variety) was more effective than number of vegetables offered (low variety) and the combination of breastfeeding and early variety experience was most effective in increasing acceptance of new foods. Liking and intake showed similar patterns in Aalen, but not in Dijon. In a 3rd study, we demonstrated that intake and liking of an initially disliked vegetable increased rapidly and, after 7-8 exposures, acceptance of the initially disliked vegetable was practically identical to the acceptance of an initially liked vegetable. The increased acceptance seems to be long lasting

Full textThis research concerns a comparison of 2 groups of babies aged approximately from 1 to 4 months. 13 babies were in the first group and presented somatic symptoms in sleep, eating, digestion, breathing, and/or of the skin while the group 2 (also of 13) displayed none of these symptoms. The Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS) of T. B. Brazelton allows an evaluation of the different behaviors and capabilities of the 2 groups. Due to the importance of the level of psychological activity in the development of somatic difficulties in adults and taking into account the psychological and physical immaturity of the baby, the question of the quality of the mothers mentalisation was evaluated using Rorschach's and the TAT projective methods and by the definition of some specific factors. The importance of the father on the familiy environment was evaluated by a clinical interview with mother sometimes in the presence of the father, and by use of a symptom check list questionnaire. This research tool was modified during this study in order to adapt it to the very young babies encountered

Full textSudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is still one of the major causes of post-neonatal death in industrialised countries. Apparent life-threatening events (ALTE) also often occur during the post-neonatal period and we may establish a relation between these two disorders. Although there may be many hypotheses about causes of these tragedies, they often remain unexplained. These disorders have hitherto been the domain of organicist medicine and has been little explored from the viewpoint of the family psycho-affective environment. This thesis is based on this question. The theoritical framework of the thesis is psychoanalysis, the psychosomatic theory of the Paris School and haptonomy or the science of affectivity. We tested five ethiological hypotheses. They refer to the organicist medical approach, the "explosive cycle" concept, transgenerational transmissions, the lack of a basic state of security and the contingencies of motherhood, respectively, without a priori giving greater importance to any one of them. We met three groups of ten subjects (families that had lost a baby to SIDS, families with a child who have suffered from ALTE and control families). We took down their testimonies during clinical interviews, guided by specific indicators. Our analysis of the contents of these interviews clearly shows that the four hypothese concerning the psychoaffective dimension are confirmed. There are however hierarchical differences that explain the different causes of the pathologies observed. We were able to highlight some factors of risk and protection, showing certain distinctive features for each of the two pathological groups. However, the differences were more pronounced in the two cases with the control group. The preventive measures proposed at the end of this study are based on this observation

Full textCardiorespiratory monitoring of newborns presenting some alerts remains an important task. Due to that, it is still required to investigate the reliability of these techniques due to the large rate of false alarms: in the best case, newborn’s family does no longer use the monitor. In this work, we started by a large review of the infant sudden death syndrome in order to exhibit its specificity and, by this way, the specificities of the cardio-respiratory system in newborns. We thus showed that the main aspect of this system is its lack of maturation and infant’s ability to wake up in acute situation. We then tested a setup based on acoustic sensors to monitor the cardio-respiratory system of infants. Unfortunately, we were not able to obtain a system with a high reliability. Moreover, the classical monitors also present some weakness. The electrocardiograms recorded during this protocol were used to build tachograms (times series of RR intervals) allowing to investigate the cardiac dynamics of infants with cardio-respiratory alerts and hospitalized at the pediatric care unit at Rouen Hospital. This is a quite rare database, at least from the very small number of papers published with such data

Full textIntroduction: The dictame or Maranta Arundinaceae is a Caribbean plant from which they extract a flour used in the feeding of the new-born baby. Objective: It is a question of making the appraisal of knowledge and actual use of this flour in Guadeloupe. Patients and Methods: this inquiry based on three types of questionnaires included 108 persons separated in three under groups: 46 parents of children of less than 3 years, 26 general practitioners and pediatricians and 36 oediatric nurses and midwifes. These auestionnaires were accomolished between November 2009 and th first week of January, 2010. Results: The dictame remains a product anchored in Guadeloupian culture. Lt carries the tab of a product of "grandmother" and is transmitted of generations in generations. 92 % of the questioned persons know the dictame and 48 % are favourable to its use. Nevertheless knowledge on the very plant and its characteristics seems very restricted. Conclusion: the use of the dictame in the feeding of the new-born baby remains a habitual behaviour in Guadeloupe. This official report must therefore invite us to follow researches on this plant to assure the use of local quality products

Full textOur purpose is to demonstrate the contribution of the study of infants' interindividual behavioral variability to the infant psychology. The first part relate the intra- and interindividual variability which appears during many experiences and observations with young infants. Methodological and theoretical difficulties of a differential approach are investigated in the second part. We demonstrate in the third part how individual variability may express the genesis of personality: we emphasize the behavioral flexibility and the early manifestations of individual personality style. The question of the origins of individual characteristics is raised and the role of environment is examinated. Several experimental projects are proposed in conclusion, to enhance a differential perspective in the study of early development

Full textThis experimental work, dedicated to the study of neonatal visuo-postural interactions, has allowed us to confirm the existence of these interactions as soon as the very first days of life, to evidence that this coupling between visual and postural systems can be functionally modulated at birth, and to show that its functional properties are preserved during development. The presence of functional properties connecting these two systems at birth and their maintenance during development lead us to draw the hypothesis that they emerge from elementary biomechanical and neuronal functionings that remain unchanged throughout ontogeny. Moreover, we suggest that the developmental function of this coupling consists in favouring the emergence of new postural competences through a calibration process of the mechanical receptors. We more specifically support the idea that the functional invariants of the visuo-postural coupling we identified in this work, are systematically re-used or re-activated during the reorganization phases of postural regulation induced by the stature and weight transformations during development

Full textThe subject of this thesis is the study of the foundations of speech. The research is based on a series of naturalistic observations of several infants in their home environment, studied on a longitudinal basis from the moment of birth until they utter their first words. The subsequent analysis of these audio-visual recordings centres on the central parameters of early communication, with a view to establishing its ontogenesis. The study describes the development of early communication as the baby establishes links with those around him ; due emphasis is here given to the importance of affect. In addition, development in the human infant is studied with reference to infant behavior in animals. Finally, body language and gestures are considered as fundamental in the development of early communication
