Le, Lann Daniel-Wassim. "Four essays on sustainable finance." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Orléans, 2023. http://www.theses.fr/2023ORLE1012.
Full textThis thesis contributes to the burgeoning research field of sustainable finance. The first part of the thesis aims to address some of the criticisms raised by investors, regulators, and stakeholders on ESG ratings. Chapter 1 develops a backtest methodology to evaluate ESG ratings. Our empirical applications indicate that the informativeness of ESG ratings strongly depends on the location of firms' headquarters and the level of consensus among rating agencies. Chapter 2 proposes a new methodology for the production of ESG ratings based on supervised learning. The methodology has the advantage of eliminating any confusion regarding what ESG ratings truly measure. Our empirical applications highlight its usefulness, but also the limitations of using information from sustainability reports to predict corporate irresponsible behavior. The findings of Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 demonstrate the considerable challenges involved in building accurate measurement systems for corporate sustainability. The second part of the thesis takes a broader perspective on organizational behavior and investment flows in the context of climate change. Chapter 3 investigates organizations' strategic responses to the threat of climate activists through a case study of a French elite student climate movement that threatened to boycott polluting employers. While the initiative has raised concerns about the ability of large companies to attract human capital, our findings indicate that polluting firms could, at least temporarily, address this challenge by committing to improve their environmental impact. Chapter 4 examines the capacity of current climate governance to slow down fossil resource extraction through an empirical investigation of investment flows into fossil energy infrastructures. Our results emphasize the importance of climate policy-making, but also the limitations of fragmented climate governance, in effectively mitigating climate change

Full textOur society maintains a complex relation with night, space-time often outside the diurnal cadences which facilitates the reflection, the imagination, the creation, the listening and the link with the other one, while revealing the segregation, the fear, and thus the restriction. By this research, we put compared to the urban lighting – real light project carrier of a strong symbolism – the socio-cultural, ecological and sanitary costs engendered by the artificial light. The urban lighting generates a geographical interlacing of bright imprints of differentiated scales, which we approach by various modellings, without forbidding us the sensitive analysis. We clarify, at various scales, the games of institutional actors and the constraints surrounding the governance of the street lighting in France, and we underline the reproduction of the possibilities offered for its local management. A characterization of the various impacts of the nocturnal artificial light by means of abstract tools of the economy of the environment allows to define as real pollutions the ecological and sanitary damages, and as nuisance the decrease – even the loss – of the accessibility to the starry sky. We show how the environmental good "starry sky" was seized by the astronomers to carry a positive project integrating henceforth the nocturnal environment in general: "Save the night". Oppositions to this project marked out its history, but the necessary energy savings and the budgets of territorial communities bring henceforth the local actors to reconsider with more interest the various propositions made by the associations of "protection of the nocturnal sky and environment". But the difficult efficiency of the mechanisms of coasian bargaining brings us to defend that the protection of these pure public goods, not unbargainable, must be taken care by the public authorities

Full textThe end of 1970s in the municipality of N'Toum in the Gabun is marked by the setting-up of one of the most important ompanies of the country the specialityof which is the extraction and the manufacturing of clinker. However, the activity of the company CIMGABON has negative consequences which are translated by a considerable modification of the environmental landscape. It is to remedy this situation common to several companies of the country that Gabon opted, since the end of 1990s, under the pressure of the international authorities in particular, for an environmental policy, putting henceforth in the center of the action, the actors (political, social, environmental) taken in a logic of co-management, as condition necessary for a better management of the environment. The participation in so allowed to give a legitimacy to often rejected actors. However, these actors meet numerous difficulties constituting as full entities of this environmental management, the latter remaining thus chaotic

Full textIn the past shelters for ships in iniquity, harbours true port places consisting of industrialo-port zones became. Doors were opened on the world, harbours are in the middle of the trades of States and constitute a not negligible trump in the foreign trade of these. Different laws and port reforms led the French legislator and the port actors to refocus the missions of each within the port place so that our harbours achieve the challenge of the competition imposed by our neighbours of the Benelux notably, and also answer the environmental pressures which Europe imposes on harbours. In France, harbours always have were considered to be utility with a duality which was translated by an administrative service for regalian missions and an industrial and commercial service for the more commercial missions. The French vision of the port public service appears since then outdated and France owes adapt to a harmonization of the management of its harbours in European norms. The reform of 2008 transferred tools to private firms, allowing the harbours to reorganize itself around development and management. It is necessary to consider the harbour as in the center of the chain of the commercial transport and an integrated management of these last appears necessary, implicating a development of our harbours side earths up, with of the Earth, fluvial and rail services which will be an answer to competition. The multimodality of harours is a working which France must set up and is under way of building, with a catch in count of environmentin the middle of every plan. France disposes big facede coastal region here not much or badly exploited. Port policy begins becoming one of the preferences of the national leaders and will allow in France of (re)to find itsmaritime vocation which for the time being too much for a long time ignored

Full textAnalysis of the dynamics of the mining sector in Peru between the end of the twentieth century and the start of the twenty-first allows an understanding of economic globalisation as a resolutely spatial phenomenon in which territories and identities are reinvented around resources at once local and global. In this thesis, we show how the new rules of the game of mining and property, and environmental governance, illustrate the necessarily political construction of Peru’s territory and resources by the central State around a national project of market-oriented exploitation of mining deposits as a source of economic wealth. This reorganisation of the national productive structure by capital, often foreign, sheds light on the impact of economic actors on the future of the territories. An increase of the spatial imprint of the mining sector and the revenue it generates amounts to a territorial and economic transplant of mining exploitation on a national scale. This increase, however, is felt unequally in local territories. The multiplication of mining conflicts at the start of the twenty-first century recalls how natural resources and the regulations codifying the society-nature relationship are the often unstable result of power relations between actors of unequal weight and with potentially antagonistic goals. We analyze these conflicts questionning the role and place of local actors and territories in development policies, as a weapon of (re)negotiation of the rules of the game wielded by the « have nots ». Varying in intensity, negotiations can be considered micro when the stakes are relatively limited and the actors only hope to achieve a greater share of the wealth. By contrast, conflicts may constitute a weapon of mass negotiation when actors refuse the commodification of nature and attempt a profound transformation of the rules of the game, as is illustrated by the Conga mining conflict in Cajamarca
