Abstract:
To address the sub-theme of the journal: Artistic Practices in a Time of Crisis, the author discusses the context of economic cuts and recent international crises on his PhD interactive and visual design research project undertaken in Australia. Identifying an apparent root-cause of current global crises, the author in reply, has structured a research plan and created a suite of new media, interactive, technology artworks, and installation art. Notions of Zen Buddhism, and stillness through meditation, are applied in the research and context of the artworks to support awareness of wellbeing, in response to the root-cause condition. The discussion will focus on the overarching question: how can one obtain value through the arts during current times of economic reduction conditioning?

Abstract:
High quality health care requires competent, motivated, and satisfied health care employees. This research examines whether employee job satisfaction differs at for-profit (FP) and not-for-profit (NFP) hospitals and how other organizational characteristics mediate this relationship. In this cross-sectional study, Press Ganey Employee Partnership Survey data from 35 Florida hospitals were used to understand the relationship between hospital ownership (primary independent variable) and employee job satisfaction (outcome). A flexible structural equation model was used to examine the relationship. The sample included 32,892 valid responses (approximately 23% from FP hospitals). Employees in FP hospitals were found to less satisfied with their jobs than their NFP counterparts. This trend was strongly associated with an inverse relationship between job satisfaction and assessment of immediate supervisors. The resulting job satisfaction model had an R2 of 0.524, indicating good fit. Further analyses revealed a positive association between perceived staffing levels and supervisor satisfaction, suggesting that the relative leanness of FP institutions might explain the observed difference in supervisor satisfaction. Employee job satisfaction is a complex multifaceted construct. Four main organizational factors affect employee job satisfaction: the organization’s ownership type (FP or NFP), employee relationships with supervisors, work schedule, and length of employment. Leaders need to provide front line supervisors with adequate resources and support. Training immediate supervisors how to approach and be supportive of their workers provides an immediate solution toward increasing employee job satisfaction.

Abstract:
About 60% of the US hospitals are not-for-profit and it is not clear how traditional theories of capital structure should be adapted to understand the borrowing behavior of not-for-profit hospitals. This paper identifies important determinants of capital structure taken from theories describing for-profit firms as well as prior literature on not-for-profit hospitals. We examine the differential effects these factors have on the capital structure of for-profit and not-for-profit hospitals. Specifically, we use a difference-in-differences regression framework to study how differences in leverage between for-profit and not-for-profit hospitals change in response to key explanatory variables (i.e. tax rates and bankruptcy costs). The sample in this study includes most US short-term general acute hospitals from 2000 to 2012. We find that personal and corporate income taxes and bankruptcy costs have significant and distinct effects on the capital structure of for-profit and not-for-profit hospitals. Specifically, relative to not-for-profit hospitals: (1) higher corporate income tax encourages for-profit hospitals to increase their debt usage; (2) higher personal income tax discourages for-profit hospitals to use debt; and (3) higher expected bankruptcy costs lead for-profit hospitals to use less debt. Over the past decade, the capital structure of for-profit hospitals has been more flexible as compared to that of not-for-profit hospitals. This may suggest that not-for-profit hospitals are more constrained by external financing resources. Particularly, our analysis suggests that not-for-profit hospitals operating in states with high corporate taxes but low personal income taxes may face particular challenges of borrowing funds relative to their for-profit competitors.
