Abstract:
This text, whose title is “Nostos - The Nostalgia we all have”, is a poetic reflexion upon the duality between literature and visual arts. The whole work reflects upon this passage between literary and visual semantics, revealing the intimacy between words and images. A vision of worlds is thus expressed, taking as starting point James Joyce’s “Ullysses”, especially its 3rd part (Nostos), and its 17th episode (Ithaca) Visual projections, through the artist’s paintings and books, are emanations of nostos, ie, the longing for return and identification with the locus of the self, given by the work of art. In this reflection dwells the finding out of a place to replicate, as if through a looking-glass, as if it were a return to the self, made possible through the work which presents itself to the Other´s gaze. There is a return through the itinerary of the work, mediated by the Other’s gaze, building upon the connection established by Joyce’s words and construing, upon it, a visual sign. The text, in this work, refers to the dialectics established in the process of formation of the work, made visible trough its poiesis.

Abstract:
This paper examines nostalgia in photo-poetry book Nostos, and nostalgia’s existence as a theoretical global condition arising from displacement, looking at nostalgia specifically not as a yearning for home, but a yearning for a lost sense of feeling at home. It traces the lineage of image-text hybrid art practices and examines the significance of conveying meaning through both synergistically. It studies the psychoanalytic process of transforming loss into object, or absence into presence, ultimately using the object as a lens to view oneself and the way in which nostalgia manifests itself.

Doussin, Celia. "Mémoires diasporiques cubains-américains : l'exil en héritage." Thesis, Université Paris-Saclay (ComUE), 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017SACLV032/document.

Abstract:
This dissertation is centered on the questions of identity of the multicultural Cuban-American 'I's, haunted by the island but inhabiting the North-American continent, as well as on the phenomena of intergenerational transmission of memory, exacerbated by the traumatic experience of post-Castro exile. Along this study we discuss the complex relationship between Cuba and the United States of America, the important stages of the emergence of the Cuban-American disapora, particularly the successive post-castrist waves of emigration, which have completely altered the identity card of the displaced community but also redefined the identity and role of a peripheral southern city of Florida: Miami. How and why is this American megalopolis often considered today as the capital of the Caribbean, to some extent even of the Americas?Through a close reading of Cuban-American memoirs, we examine the post-castrist Cuban exile, more precisely its temporality, as well as its paradoxical perception by certain Cuban-Americans, at a certain point in their adult life as both a haven and a burden. The dissertation also considers the mutilated childhood of the 'one-and-a-halfers', their identity hybridity transpiring through their cultural and linguistic nomadism. Their personal testimonies depict multiple phenomena of crosscultural pollinization, counterbalanced and/or completed by an obsessive repetition of their cultural memory thanks to their story-telling grandparents. In the final part of this study we explore self-writing, which is both transcendance and resurgence of their exile and their past. Besides, Cuban-American memoirs often shed light on the passage from a Cuban oral tradition to an American tradition of self-fufilment through writing. They root their inspiration in intimacy to reach the universal, they participate in inscribing their presence their presence both within the realms of Latin-American literature and U.S. self-writing

Zavaglia, Cecilia.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The First World War wrought untold destruction on the physical and psychological landscape of Europe. For Britain, the immediate post-war period represented no less than a national “nostos,” or homecoming, and few social institutions were so fragmented by the conflict as the home. This thesis will explore the various conceptions of “home,” from the nation and the domestic sphere to post-war consciousness, through the lens of Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway and Rebecca West’s The Return of the Soldier. Though unique in style and scope, Woolf and West interrogate and revise pre-war notions of “home” and suggest a Modernist aesthetic of what it is to be both at “home” and at home in the world.

Abstract:
This paper compares Odysseus and Achilles from an existential, psychological and religious perspectives in order to understand the Homeric characters and shed light on the importance of, particularly Odysseus, in our postmodern time. It starts by describing the Homeric field of research and the ideas about Odysseus that were common for the ancient Greek philosophers, and continues with the discussion of the topicality, value and advantage in studying the antiquity. In comparing Odysseus and Achilleus, the paper elaborates on the idea of the relationship between man and god, notably the relationship between Odysseus and Athena and Zeus respectively. It ends with the discussion of the divine connection between Zeus’ and Odysseus’ kingship.

Paris 4, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008PA040226.

Full text
Abstract:
Among all the stories dealing with coming back home in European literature (the coming back of a sailor, a soldier, a traveller, the coming back of a husband, a son, etc. ), the best-known is, without any doubt whatever, that of Ulysses, narrated in the Odyssey which has been told again and again for almost thirty centuries. This exceptional good fortune is to be explained more by the crystallization of the main features that make up this thematic corpus than by the historical importance of a model. Homer managed more than any other story-tellers to clarify and typify the traditional theme of the coming back of the missing one by giving his epic a dramatic density and a narrative scope that has remained unequalled. That is what the first part of this study shows. Yet, this mythification process can better be understood a posteriori thanks to resurgences that have played a part in enriching the story of the coming back of Ulysses with remarkable plenitude both at semantic and emotional levels. If there is a field in which this idealization of the coming back is to reach its full climax, it is undeniably poetry in exile as the second part of this work shows. From Antiquity to the twentieth century, the poets far away from their motherlands have found in the tale of the coming back to Ithaca very inspiring poetic material to build up elegiac fiction in which homesickness also ignites incentives to come back of another nature : a coming back to paradise lost, particularly that of childhood and that of an inaccessible absolute. If it is abusive to speak about the Myth of Ulysses, it is legitimate to distinguish in this narrative set a myth of the coming back : the Odysseyan myth

_______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
This study, developed in Córrego do Palha rural community (Brasília-DF), brings the results of the implementation of non-formal environmental education (EE) actions having water as its theme. The thesis was built through a participatory research methodology that had three main axis. The first one consisted of a social and environmental participative diagnosis focused on the local water resources. According to its results it was possible to picture a very heterogeneus community regarding the socio-economic dimension. The environmental scenario revealed that one of the community’s water bodies, Palhinha stream, is impacted due to local actions, which is a concern for the management of local water resources. On the other hand, the diagnosis also revealed that the community seems to be receptive towards future EE actions. The development of a pedagogic counseling and capacity building process with the community educators was the second axis of the research. Its result was the implementation of an EE project called “Palhinha’s friends”. The implementation of this project, which aimed to revitalize Palhinha stream, was only possible because of the educators´ participation and involvement of the educators, as well as the support of the local population. The third axis of the thesis was the realization and follow-up of one of the “Palhinha’s friends” actions, composed by field trips. This activity was developed with the students of the local community center and targeted the interpretation of the local environmental reality. Some results accomplished were the production of knowledge about the socio and environmental context and the recognition of the Palhinha stream as an important element of the landscape through a new perspective. Although “rich”, this study brings a simple message: it is necessary to know our nearby reality, to development links with it and to participate in actions that promote effective changes.

Abstract:
Nikos Kazantzakis Captain Michales is a freedom fighter in nineteenth century Crete. Patrick Whites Voss is a German explorer in nineteenth century Australia. Two men struggling for achievement, their disparate social contexts united in the same fundamental search for meaning. This thesis makes comparison of these different struggles through thematic analysis of the texts, examining within the narratives the role of food, perceptions of body and soul, landscapes, gender relations, home-coming and religious experience. Themes from the novels are extracted and intertwined, within a range of theoretical frameworks: history, anthropology, science, literary and social theories, religion and politics; allowing close investigation of each novels social, political and historical particularities, as well as their underlying discussion of perennial human issues. These novels are each essentially explorations of the human experience. Read together, they highlight the commonest of human elements, most poignantly the need for communion; facilitating analysis of the individual and all our communities. Comparing the two novels also continues the process of each: examining the self both within and outside of the narratives, producing a new textual self, arising from both primary sources and the contextual breadth of such rewriting.

The aim of this paper consists in analyzing the violence in Marcelino Freire’s work, Nossos sonhos (2013). First, we will discuss the recurrence of violence in our society, trying to understand how from the modernity it seems to have trivialized itself and how it influences the literary production nowadays. It will be used as theoretical contribution about modernity Berman (2007), Bauman (1998; 2001) and Giddens’ (1991) texts and about the evil Ricouer (1988) and Rosenfield (2003); after that, we will analyze how this theme has fomented Marcelino Freire’s writing studying Souza (2012), Vasconcelos (2007), Rocha (2015) e Santana (2015); then, we will discuss the evil in the cities and how in the work, from the narrator's memories, we contrast the great city and sertão of Pernambuco, and we will also try to identify the relation between Nossos ossos and the literature in the 30’s, for that we will use Albuquerque Jr (2001), Halbswachs (2006), Candido (1989) and Bueno’s (2006) texts; still about the fragmented contemporary narrator, we will approach Benjamin (1994), Santiago (1989) and Hall (2001). Later, we will discuss the relation between body and crime, pointing the relation between body of romance and the elements of the police narrative, supported in Mandel (1993) and Todrov (1979), in a parody perspective reading Hutcheon (1989) and Samoyault (2008); next, we will go deeper in the discussion between body, crime and literature by reading Ludmer (2002), Agamben (2002) and Bergson (2006), and in the sequence between characters that represent cyborgs people, defining the relation between body and machine, using Haraway (2009), Doel (2001), Kunzuru (2001) and Santaela (2003). And, finally, it will be discussed the matters related to double and otherness and how they are imbricated for the understanding of the spreading of the evil resorting Bravo (2005), Rosset (1988) and Kalina and Koyadloff’s (1989) texts; we will also trace a relation between the work and the theater from Motta (2011), Rosenfeld (2014), Artaud’s (1993) texts; and then, especially, with a performance by means of Calson (2011), Puchner (2013), Ramos (2013) and Fernandes’ (2009) texts.

Abstract:
The aim of the study was to investigate the morphology, ecology and phylogeny of cyanobacteria belonging to genera Nostoc and Desmonostoc in Lithuania. The detailed research of freshwater and terrestrial Nostoc and Desmonostoc species provided new data on taxonomy, biology and ecology of these cyanobacteria and the overall diversity of algae in Lithuania. 20 Nostoc species and two intraspecific taxa, and 18 taxa to the Nostoc genus level were identified. Twelve Nostoc species and intraspecific taxa, Desmonostoc genus including two taxa were recorded for the first time in Lithuania. A check list was compiled of all identified species with original morphological and ecological data as well as pictures. An applied research by different types of Nostoc and Desmonostoc species samples was valuable in morphological analysis – suitability for identification and stability of diagnostic morphological features in species was identified. The highest diversity of Nostoc and Desmonostoc species were recorded in lentic ecosystems and 14 species were found in terrestrial habitats. A wide genetic and morphological diversity of Nostoc and Desmonostoc species was identified while performing fingerprint TGGE and morphological analyses of cyanobacterial natural populations. The morphological and phylogenetic analyses of Nostoc and Desmonostoc strains showed morphological and phylogenetic heterogenity of Nostoc species and differences of the same types between Desmonostoc and Nostoc species.

Abstract:
Nikos Kazantzakis' Captain Michales is a freedom fighter in nineteenth century Crete. Patrick White's Voss is a German explorer in nineteenth century Australia. Themes from the novels are extracted and intertwined, within a range of theoretical frameworks: history, anthropology, science, literary and social theories, religion and politics; allowing close investigation of each novel's social, political and historical particularities, as well as their underlying discussion of perennial human issues.

Jordan, Brian Robert. "Carbohydrate-Interacting Proteins from Two Nostoc (Cyanobacteria) Species." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/11177.

Full text
Abstract:
Cyanobacteria of the Nostoc genus are known for the thick, mucilaginous carbohydrate coatings that they produce. In this work, two examples of cyanobacterial glycobiology are considered, each of which involves a cyanobacterium of the Nostoc genus. The first portion of this work details attempts to obtain amino acid sequence information from the enzymes (glycosyltransferases) that are responsible for producing the extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) of Nostoc commune DRH1, ultimately to allow the transfer of this capacity to another organism. Two artificial substrates were synthesized for use in a capillary electrophoresis-based enzyme assay, which was used to look for glycosyltransferase activity in Nostoc commune DRH1 cell extracts. Glucuronosyltransferase activity was detected in association with Nostoc commune membrane material. The active enzyme displayed a divalent cation metal dependence (Mg+2) that is typical of glycosyltransferase enzymes purified from other organisms. Because the enzyme responsible for this activity held the potential to be EPS-related, its purification was attempted. The capillary electrophoresis-based enzyme assay and a 32P-labeled affinity tag were utilized to follow the glucuronosyltransferase enzyme through successive purification steps. The active enzyme was extracted from Nostoc commune membrane material using Triton X-100, and then purified by anion exchange chromatography. The active detergent extract was extremely unstable, and consequently, other purification techniques tested were unsuccessful in enriching activity. Affinity-labeling experiments indicated that the active enzyme was forming protein aggregates during these procedures, which were not amenable to in-gel protease digestion and peptide analysis by tandem mass spectrometry. The second portion of this work describes an investigation of an Anabaena (Nostoc) PCC 7120 soluble cell extract. Upon separation by sodium dodecyl sulfate ¡V polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and subsequent periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining of the resulting gel, the components of this cellular fraction produce a ladder-like pattern, which suggests that the extract may contain glycosylated protein. Analyses of several samples that were taken from within the PAS-staining region of such a gel revealed surface layer homology (SLH) domain-containing proteins, likely candidates to be covalently attached to or non-covalently interacting with carbohydrate. Various protein sequence analyses indicated that the detected SLH domain containing proteins belong to a family of (putative) cyanobacterial porins. Proteins in this family possess features that include a N-terminal signal sequence, a single SLH domain motif, followed by a coiled-coil region, and a C-terminal region that is homologous to the b-barrel-forming region of bacterial porins. All of these features were identified in the detected Anabaena (Nostoc) PCC 7120 SLH domain-containing proteins. Smith degradation was performed on a sample that was electroeluted from the PAS-staining region of a preparative-scale SDS-PAGE gel of the soluble cell extract. Subsequent analyses of the resulting sample by SDS-PAGE and mass spectrometry indicated that at least two SLH domain-containing proteins, encoded by all4499 and alr4550, were non-covalently interacting with the PAS-staining material. Following degradation, the PAS-staining material was still of sufficient size to detected by gel electrophoresis, and it continued to migrate in the absence of an interacting protein component. Protease digestion of a similarly prepared sample, and then subsequent analysis by SDS-PAGE and mass spectrometry, revealed that the region between amino acid residues #504 and #536, in the protein encoded by the alr4550 open reading frame, was interacting with the PAS-staining material. Monosaccharide composition analyses of this material revealed more carbohydrate constituents than are found in cyanobacterial primary (peptidoglycan) cell wall polymer alone, indicating that it contained a significant secondary cell wall polymer component as well.

Abstract:
Nostoc punctiforme is a nitrogen-fixing, symbiotic/free-living cyanobacterium. There has been a great deal of research conducted on the genomic nature of N. punctiforme as it pertains to its ecologically important role in the nitrogen cycle in varied environments around the world. My study concentrated on the dormant cell type known as the akinete. Increasing concentrations of NaCl were used to follow the growth phases from germination to akinete formation (lag phase-logarithmic growth phase-stationary phase). I found that increased salt concentrations caused N. punctiforme to form akinetes faster when compared to the control. Germination rates were not greatly increased or shortened by salt concentrations at or below 40 mM NaCl. Damage to cells due to NaCl was observed between 105 mM and 500 mM. Physiological studies, such as this one, enable better quantifiable field research since the organism’s limitations under laboratory conditions are known. This research allows researcher to more accurately plan and pick study sites, develop field studies and gives a solid basis for comparison to the natural environment.

The present research has as objective to raise questions concerning the violence concept. The concept it is worked in the intersection of sociology, the psychoanalysis and literature. It is not any kind of violence, but that we call virtuous violence , that in the name of a greater good happens and is justified when violence is disguised as a virtue. For this, the conducting line of the research will be the psychic and social representations of the violence, supported in one of the basic concepts of the psychoanalysis, the impulse and the social justification that each season builds to justify their violence. For and, the violence virtue concept will find a frame, the book of Dostoiévski, Crime and Punishment, with the conflict of the main character Raskólnikov and his theory about the crime allowed

Abstract : This study discusses the relationship between experience and storytelling in childhood by analyzing children?s oral narratives. The purpose is to understand the importance of children narrating their experiences and the contributions that this may have for their education. The reference used is a field study with a group of 5th year Primary Education schoolchildren aged between 9 and 10 years old attending a public school located in a rural community in the municipality of Francisco Beltrão/PR, Brazil. The approach used is that of qualitative research based on narratives, guided by the principles of conducting research with children. The main methodological strategy used were storytelling workshops in order to encourage the children to create and tell stories based on themes occurring in their lives. The main theoretical references comprising the aesthetical and philosophical backdrop of the study are taken from the work of Mikhail Bakhtin and Walter Benjamin: Benjamin?s concepts of narrative and experience are discussed; as are Bakhtin?s concepts of dialogism, otherness and exotopia. The results indicate that ensuring time and space at school for children to narrate their experiences of life provides them with favourable conditions to: experience the world of their culture in and through language; explore possibilities of authorship and dimensions of cultural identity; broaden the quality of their narrative discourse ? by recognizing their experiences and narrating them; establish an authority of senses in relation to the experiences they have lived and ensure the legitimacy of what they narrate; share experiences with involvement and trust; create community ties through sharing life stories; experience otherness by putting themselves in the place of others; recall, imagine and relive, by sharing their experiences through narrative, resignifying them; and, above all, enrich individual and collective constructs, enabling continuities of experience in relation to each other and attributing aesthetic meanings both to others and to their own experience. In this study these aspects are associated with the quest for poetic and aesthetic teaching practice and are considered to be fundamental in child education.

Abstract:
The molecular biology of desiccation tolerance was investigated in the cyanobacteria with emphasis on Nostoc commune. Analysis of DNA from 41 samples of desiccated Nostoc spp. of varied age and global distribution led to the amplification of 43 independent tRNALEU(UAA) group 1 intron sequences. Phylogenetic analysis of the entire data set made it possible to define the form species Nostoc commune. The synthase (spsA) and phosphatase (sppA) genes required for the synthesis of sucrose were isolated from cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. strain PCC 6803 and overexpressed in E. coli in two different vector constructions. Transformants had a marked increased capacity for desiccation tolerance. Sucrose synthesis was confirmed through thin layer chromatography (TLC) analysis of cell extracts from transformants. Long-term stability of DNA in desiccated Nostoc samples was demonstrated by the ability to amplify selected gene loci from samples stored dry for decades. Successful amplification in some samples was possible only after treatment with phenacylthiazolium bromide, a reagent that disrupts covalent cross-links; indicating that the DNA was modified by cross-links that occurred between reducing sugars and the primary amines on the DNA. Abundant superoxide dismutase was released following rehydration of desiccated field material N. commune CHEN after 13 years in the dry state. sodF mRNA was present in the dry material but was turned over within 15 min of rehydration. mRNA levels then rose and appeared to reach steady state levels after 3 hours and remained abundant after 24 hours of rehydration.

Abstract:
Accelerated global warming plus an increasing need for energy is an equation not easily solved, thus new forms of sustainable energy production are urgently requested. In this context hydrogen production based on a cyanobacterial system offers an environmentally friendly alternative for energy capture and conversion. Cyanobacteria can produce hydrogen gas from sun light and water through the combination of photosystems and hydrogenases, and are suitable to cultivate in large scale. In the present thesis the maturation process of [NiFe]-hydrogenases is investigated with special focus on transcription of the accessory genes encoding proteins needed for assembly of the large and possibly also for the small hydrogenase subunit. The cyanobacteria used are two N2-fixing, filamentous, heterocystous strains; Nostoc sp. strain PCC 7120 and Nostoc punctiforme PCC 73102. For a biotechnological exploration of hydrogen production tools for regulatory purposes are important. The transcription factor CalA (cyanobacterial AbrB like) (Alr0946 in the genome) in Nostoc sp. strain PCC 7120 was found to be involved in hydrogen metabolism by regulating the transcription of the maturation protein HypC. Further the bidirectional hydrogenase activity was down-regulated in the presence of elevated levels of CalA, a result important to take into account when optimizing cyanobacteria for hydrogen production. CalA regulates at least 25 proteins in Nostoc sp. strain PCC 7120 and one of the down-regulated proteins was superoxide dismutase, FeSOD. The characterization of FeSOD shows that it has a specific and important function in the oxidative stress tolerance of Nostoc sp. stain PCC 7120. Since CalA is involved in regulation of both the hydrogen metabolism as well as stress responses these findings indicate that Alr0946 is an important transcription factor in Nostoc sp. strain PCC 7120 active on a global level in the cell. This thesis adds more knowledge concerning maturation and regulation of cyanobacterial hydrogenases which might be useful for future large scale hydrogen.

Abstract:
The cyanobacterium Nostoc sp. ATCC53789 produces two interesting families of natural products: the cryptophycins and the nostocyclopeptides. The structures of the cryptophycins, a class of tumor-selective cytotoxins, suggest the involvement of both peptide synthetases and polyketide synthases in their biosynthesis. The nostocyclopeptides are cyclic heptapeptides that feature the unnatural amino acid (2S, 4S)-4-methylproline and an unusual imine linkage between two of the amino acid residues. To identify the biosynthetic gene clusters for these peptides, a cosmid library was generated. Peptide synthetase adenylation domains from Nostoc sp. ATCC53789 were amplified by PCR, using degenerated primers based on core conserved sequences within these domains, and used to screen the library. The library was also screened with a probe derived from nosE, a gene involved in 4-methylproline biosynthesis in Nostoc sp. GSV 224. The nosE probe identified three overlapping cosmids, which when sequenced were found to contain genes consistent with nostocyclopeptide biosynthesis. The putative nostocyclopeptide gene cluster includes two peptide synthetase genes, the second of which terminates in a domain with homology to reductases. The cluster also contains genes that appear to be involved in the biosynthesis of 4-methylproline.

Abstract: The aim of our study is to reflect on the three main characters of the work Os Nossos Antepassados as allegorical figurations of the modern subject. The route we choose to follow was to present a brief overview of Calvino and the relationship between the real and the fictional in his trajectory from the point of view of the Italian criticism. After that, as there are several definitions and understandings of what can be defined as modernity, we made explicit in which conceptions we are supported in this study. For the discussion about allegory conceptions, it was more fruitful to discuss this concept based on Walter Benjamin¿s elaborations. As we think that Calvino¿s work, in analysis here, keeps a tense relation with the social context of his writing period, we seek to situate such context, notably the specificity of Italian modernity, highlighting some historical events at that period when those three stories were written, emphasizing the debate on the Italian neorealism. Then, we present some of the performed analyzes on the work in study and proceeded to our analysis. Medardo¿s division, understood by us as mutilation, it is related to the concepts of concrete individual, particular and abstract bourgeois and universal subject-form. For us, the dynamics of modern social life is also a dynamic of the subjectivity, where the social form intendeds to require the individuals the constant erasing of their traces of individuality in favor of a form of general and abstract subjectivity. However, the concrete individuals are not machines that erase their life story for the benefit of social, i.e., there are tensions that for us come from this mutilation between the demands of the whole universal social and the private life. Cosme, in turn, is interpreted by us both as an allegory of the modern subject of the Instrumental Reason with his tendency to submit the world to the imperatives of the Reason and as a disappointment-aporia for this rationality: it is not known if Cosme is disappointed because he could not make the world be guided by the Reason or because he also noticed in the world's rationalization the roots of irrationality. Agilulfo seems an allegorical picture of what might be called the modern subject character armor, a subjectivity abstraction as the cavalryman expresses the denial of the individuality of the human being, in favor of a subject-form capable to the modern life, a subject that has actions and thoughts in line with the modern rhythm, accepting the experienced reality without making friction with it

Abstract:
This dissertation presents how the way the Guyanese writer Wilson Harris creates characters in The Sleepers of Roraima (1970) resonates with premises of the idea of difference existing in indigenous cosmologies of lowland South America. In order to outline a relation between these planes, the work focuses on corporeality and perspective, two themes that are key to americanist ethnology, linking them to the processes of singularization of characters narrated in Harriss trilogy of novellas. More precisely, this research highlights how modes of individuation of the native peoples of the region reverberate in the dynamics that make up the fictional beings in his work. These dynamics, mediated by pre-individual aspects which are irreducible to a morphology of physiologically distinct embodiments, take part in the focalization of the novellas, producing an axis of proliferation of perspectives. Thus, the narrator turns away from the principle of identity as the common denominator of personification, converging with the differentiating replication that characterizes practices within many Amerindian ontologies. This study shows that the analyzed characters are not defined by intellectual or psychological boundaries, but vary relationally as they actualize points of views unfolded by narrative features such as oxymorons and parallelisms. Such textual procedures are directed against the determinism of mimetic realism, through lines of imbrication between baroque dilemmas, surrealist bricolages and the Amerindian notion of difference. As from this literary analysis, this dissertation outlines contributions to deepening a reciprocity of perspectives between Americanist ethnology, the philosophy of difference and literary studies, benefiting from this symmetrization as a point of entry for interrogating modern antipodes such as nature/culture, individual/society and we/others.

Understanding the relationship between the human being and the environment is a need present in the agenda of companies, governments, academy and consumers. Towards the sustainable development, everyone is looking for the causes and possible solutions to mitigate the environmental problems, since these might affect all of us. So, this study aimed to identify if the awareness of adverse consequences and the consumers' environmental concern contribute to the environmental conscious behaviors. These objectives were reached through the application of in-depth interviews allied with the projective technique with 33 consumers aged between 18 to 66 years old that were residents in João Pessoa city. The interpretation of the speeches through the content analysis with qualitative approach oriented by Bardin (1977) generated thematic categories and variables. These, when confronted in the light of the theoretical references, allowed the analysis of the environmental conscious behaviors and if these are oriented by selfish values (anthropocentric) or are guided by altruistic and biospheric values (ecocentric). The results showed a paradoxical consumers relationship that ranges among consuming less to preserve the environment and the planet (values oriented to our interests ) or consuming more to reach personal satisfaction in a way to maintain the own life quality, the health and the personal well-being ( my interests ). The study reveals a high concern and understanding referred to the negative consequences of the environmental degradation. However, despite of the declared intention of acting on behalf of the environment, the consumers demonstrate passivity and selfish behaviors. In this context, the consumers impute to the companies and the governments the environmental care and do not exercise their power to maintain the society s balance. From these verifications, it is necessary to make the consumers aware and to motivate them to change values and behaviors, towards this new thought related to an ecological rationality. The sustainable development can be reached by addressing the government actions together with the marketing strategies, but also counting with the consumer's active participation in this sense.

Abstract:
This work has as object of study the trilogy Our Ancestors (I nostri antenati, 1960), a milestone in Italo Calvino's literary career. By developing plots from mental images of a man vertically cut in two, a young man decided to spend his lifetime on the trees and a hollow armor endowed with consciousness, the italian author realized that it was possible to play with the unusual without losing sight of the reality around it. The figures created by him fulfilled well the function to represent the individual of the 1950s, period in which they where placed on paper: they interpreted the questioning and the apathy coming from the warlike climate that stretched because of the Cold War and the desire to overcome the shackles imposed by society. Very productive was also the choice of Calvino for a remote setting for these stories, dialoguing with the literary and historical tradition and promoting reflection on the ways in which humanity understands time and interferes in it. We intend to observe how the books in question came close to the new ways of fictionalizing the past and figuring the unusual, effects of discussions which began on the first half of the XX century and intensified on the following decades. Finally, from the relashionship established by the trilogy between history and imagination, we will lean on the meeting points between reality and fiction, author, work and reader.

We bring in this work a discursive analysis on the language advertising executive whose epistemological anchorage that occurs for the theory of the Analysis of Speech (AD) of French origin (MICHEL PÊCHEUX). We add interlocutions with Bakhtin. We still include some scholars of the communication, the advertising and the marketing Neves, Sant'Anna, Gracioso, Predebon in an attempt to analyze the directions of the speech advertising executive, from the corpus formed by announcements of a campaign propagated in 2001, signed by Associação Brasileira de Agências de Publicidade (the Brazilian Association of Publicity Agencies (ABAP)) and others associations linked to the advertising communication. Some of aims we consider are to make possible a critical reading of the advertising speech; to identify indicative of explicit and implicit points, already-said revealing; to recognize ideological traces that affect the constituent sense of discursive universes and citizens´ opinions. From the used boarding theoretical, we identify that the production of the advertising speech - symptom of the capital - is based on the social interlocutions and the exercise of a power that uses a cloudy language, focused in conflicts, contradictions, promises of all cost success, finding fertile land for its proper the capitalism development and maintenance.

Abstract:
Cyanobacteria are prokaryotes capable of oxygenic photosynthesis, and for many species, nitrogen fixation, giving cyanobacteria an important role in global carbon and nitrogen cycles. Furthermore, multicellular filamentous cyanobacteria are developmentally complex, capable of differentiation into different cell types, including cells capable of nitrogen fixation and cells for motility, making them an ideal platform for studying development, as well as for practical use in biotechnology. Understanding how developmental programmes are activated require an understanding of the role of alternative sigma factors, which are required for transcriptional activation in bacteria. In order to investigate the gene regulatory network and to determine the role of alternative sigma factors in hormogonium development, real time PCR and Next Generation RNA-seq were used to measure expression levels of genes involved in hormogonium development and to further characterise the nature of the hormogonium developmental programme in the filamentous cyanobacterium Nostoc punctiforme. The results support a model where a hierarchal sigma factor cascade activates hormogonium development, in which expression of sigJ activates expression of the sigma factors sigC and sigF, as well as a wide range of other genes, including those involved in the type IV pilus (T4P), chemotaxis-like systems, and cell architecture. SigC and SigF have more limited roles: cell division genes are dependent on SigC and pilA expression was stringently SigF-dependent. Interestingly, SigC was also found to enhance expression of sigJ during hormogonium development, implying a potential positive feedback loop between sigJ and sigC.

Abstract:
Sanctae modernae in diebus nostris?

Abstract:
Filaments of the desiccation-tolerant cyanobacterium Nostoc commune are embedded within, and distributed throughout, a dense glycan sheath. Analysis of the glycan of field materials and of pure cultures of N. commune DRH1 through light and electron microscopy, immunogold-labelling and staining with dyes, revealed changes in the pattern of differentiation in glycan micro-structure, as well as localized shifts in pH, upon rehydration of desiccated field material. A Ca/Si rich external (pellicular) layer of the glycan acts as a physical barrier on the surface of N. commune colonies. A purified fraction (> 12 kDa) of an aqueous extract of the glycan from desiccated field material contained glucose, N -acetylglucosamine, glucosamine, mannose and galactosamine with ratios of 3.1 : 1.4 : 1 : 0.1 : 0.06, respectively. Ethanol extracts of N. commune contained trehalose and sucrose and the levels of both became undetectable following cell rehydration. Elemental analysis of glycan extracts showed a flux in the concentrations of salts in the glycan matrix following rehydration of desiccated colonies. Intracellular cyanobacterial trehalase was identified using immunoblotting and its synthesis was detected upon rehydration of desiccated field cultures. Water-stress proteins (Wsp; molecular masses of 33, 37, and 39 kDa are the most abundant proteins in glycan), a water soluble UV-AlB-absorbing pigment, the lipid-soluble UV-protective pigment scytonernim, as well as two unidentified cyanobacterial glycoproteins (75 kDa and 110 kDa), were found within the glycan matrix. No evidence was found for either glycosylation, phosphorylation or acylation of Wsp polypeptides. NH2-terminal sequence analysis of the three proteins of Wsp were identical: Ala-Leu-Tyr-Gly-Tyr-Thr-Ile-Gly-Glu-Gln-X-Ile-Gln- Asn-Pro-Ser-Asn-Pro-Ser-Asn-Gly-Lys-Gln. An unidentified 68-kDa protein, the second most abundant protein in aqueous extracts of the glycan, was isolated and its N-terminal sequenced was determined: Ala-Phe-lle-Phe-Gly-Thr-Ile-Ser-Pro-Asn-Asn-Leu-Ser-Gly- Thr-Ser-Gly-Asn-Ser-Gly-Ile-Val-Gly-Ser-Ala. Gene bank searches with these sequences, and an internal sequence ofWsp (Glu-Ala-Arg-Val-Thr-Gly-Pro-Thr-Thr-Pro-Ile-Asp), identified homologies with various carbohydrate-modifying enzymes. Purified Wsp polypeptides associate with 1,4-β-D-xylanxylanohydrolase activity that was inhibited specifically by Wsp antiserum. In the absence of salt, Wsp polypeptides, and the water-soluble UV -A/B-absorbing pigments, form multimeric complexes through strong ionic interactions. The role of the glycan, and the protein and pigments that reside within it, in the desiccation tolerance of N. commune is discussed with respect to structure/function relationships.

This work addresses the meaning of language as patrimony from a specific place, the Portuguese Language Museum (São Paulo, 2006), elected for constituting a safeguard and a celebration space of the patrimony, besides showing the language as a symbolic object. The concept of patrimony involves a series of symbols that are socially and juridically determined from the value and symbolic strength they have for the collective memory of a group. It is a material means of witnessing the past lived by the discursive paraphrase of memories with content of historical temporality, and this paraphrase is inscribed in the universe of the logically established discourses. In this perspective, language is also valorized in the space of the subjects practices and of what is manifested as representative of this relationship. So it must be a part of or remain in the narratives of history. Mainly, due to the authorized voice of the museum as a place in the material culture, an authorized place to interpret and a place for fixing senses, the constitution of the language as a museum object, and, therefore, a patrimony, problematizes both the possibility of the language to be a file and the legitimization of a discourse through which facts and versions that serve as references in our history are organized and presented (ORLANDI, 2000). Our theoretical and methodological approach is the Discourse Analysis postulated by Michel Pêcheux in France and developed by Eni Orlandi and other researchers in Brazil. From this perspective, we start with the comprehension of language as a material basis and as a condition to realize different discursive processes (PÊCHEUX, 2009 [1988]), and we try to work it as a symbolic object that slides through distinct senses, i.e., both in its imaginary character and as a possibility of creating facts in the world. The remission to the concepts of imaginary and fluid language (ORLANDI, 2003 [1999]) is the possibility to reflect the theory on the political practice of discursive appreciation and stabilization of the language as a symbolic object in the constitution of the file at the Portuguese Language Museum. The way to be followed involves the deconstruction of the file and of the file memory of that museum toward the constitution of language as patrimony, with a value of historical memory and in its political sense, relating to the universality previewed in the concept of patrimony and in the museum slogan: language is what unites us .

If the personal handwriting has to survive as individual skill against the new techniques of writing, it seems necessary to analyze the handwriting in a new perspective. Since we live in a universe governed by the technological media, in which the computer can be seen as a true extension of man, what is the place of handwriting? And yet, believing that design can help the educator, how to interfere in the acquisition of handwriting and the development of a functional and legible writing? This research project attempts to shed light on this issue from a synthesis of the main models of writing adopted in primary education in Brazil during the twentieth century. To this end, we list those models and analyze them in the search of relationships and commonalities between these models and pointing to future notes, based on the design field and, in particular, on that of typography, having the acquisition of writing as a back stage.
