Abstract:

Este libro muestra una diversidad de miradas acerca de cómo se puede percibir o estudiar el pensamiento crítico, tratar la formación del mismo desde escenarios como la literatura, la televisión, los textos auténticos o las imágenes. Esta investigación representó un reto para los autores, quienes tienen visiones desde contextos económicos, políticos, sociales y culturales para determinar los escenarios en los que quieren trabajar el concepto que los reúne. Para todos son fundamentales los conceptos de lector, lectura, espectador e historia. La multiplicidad de visiones nos lleva a leer, en un principio, cómo un uso del pasado nos construye como humanos en una sociedad que cuenta su propia historia con ironía. En un segundo momento, se nos revela un concepto íntimamente ligado al pensamiento crítico: la conciencia histórica, analizada desde los productos culturales masivos. Así mismo, se muestra la manera en la que la imagen puede ser leída críticamente y desde otra visión junto al texto y cómo esta construcción social se configura desde el contexto de la modernidad en el objeto del libro. En un cuarto momento, llega el impacto de una lectura crítica con enfoque de género, tocando temáticas de la violencia y la política. Luego, nos encontramos con un trato de la literatura de la violencia, la cual analiza la emoción y la emocionalidad que puede llegar a producir la lectura en el lector, este último como sujeto preponderante en el que se revelan los toques íntimos de una reflexión profunda. Por último, se tratan los textos auténticos con respecto a lo intercultural y lo pedagógico como construcción del sujeto

Nesta realidade dinámica e cambiante, o modelo lingüístico do sistema educativo debe atender ás novas necesidades dos e das falantes, á vez que servir como vehículo de integración da súa diversidade. Nun contexto social coma o de Ames, no que estas dinámicas se fan sentir aínda máis por mor da urbanización crecente e do impacto da inmigración na súa demografía, cómpre facer unha reflexión sobre a xestión lingüística desenvolvida nos centros educativos de cara á construción dunha proposta de plurilingüismo favorable á nosa lingua e respectuosa cos seus falantes, pero tamén acolledora para esta nova veciñanza e útil para o futuro do alumnado. O obxectivo desta guía é contribuír a esta reflexión analizando a situación sociolingüística local, facendo algunhas aclaracións conceptuais ao redor da proposta europea para o plurilingüismo e recollendo algunhas consideracións de cara á planificación lingüística nos centros educativos.

Abstract:

Charles Skinner Hallpike was born in 1900 in Muree, a small hill station and health resort in the northernmost part of India (now a part of Pakistan). He was baptized at the Church of St. James in Delhi. This was one of the three places of worship—a Hindu temple, a mosque, and a Christian church—built by Hallpike’s great-grandfather, James Skinner. Hallpike began his medical training at Guy’s Hospital in 1919. After graduating from medical school, he was appointed House Surgeon to T. B. Layton in the Ear, Nose and Throat Department at Guy’s Hospital. He took his Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of London and followed with his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons. Hallpike had a reputation of being rather unapproachable, but he was comfortable with his clinical peers and had a protective attitude to the people who worked for him.

Abstract:

Creole Noise constructs a literary history of Creole literature—also known as dialect literature, or literary dialect—and performance in the English-speaking Caribbean from the heyday of colonialism in the late-eighteenth century to the post-Emancipation period of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century. It does so from an understanding that Creole is an essential feature of Caribbean cultural production. In emphasizing travel, the gendering of literary dialect, pro-slavery authors, and multi-racial authors, the book revises the common view that Creole literature was an insular local practice of the twentieth century Caribbean, or solely the product of modern, anti-colonial, black-affirming nationalist projects. Authors of early literary dialect include white creoles, blacks and browns. The book reconstructs an earlier proliferation of dialect literature in the preceding centuries, usually dismissed as merely racist mimicry of “black talk”, not understood as part of a continuum of artistic production in the Caribbean. The book argues that the Caribbean’s history of dialect literature is a factor in the literary histories of the United States and the wider trans-Atlantic.

Neste modesto volume o Centro de Estudios Rosalianos tributa unha pequena homenaxe ao P. Sergio Álvarez Campos (1924-1994), que foi profesor de Lingua Latina nesta Universidade, con entrega e decoro, durante moitos anos. Abstract:

Chapter 3 introduces the Box-Jenkins AutoRegressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) noise modeling strategy. The strategy begins with a test of the Normality assumption using a Kolomogov-Smirnov (KS) statistic. Non-Normal time series are transformed with a Box-Cox procedure is applied. A tentative ARIMA noise model is then identified from a sample AutoCorrelation function (ACF). If the sample ACF identifies a nonstationary model, the time series is differenced. Integer orders p and q of the underlying autoregressive and moving average structures are then identified from the ACF and partial autocorrelation function (PACF). Parameters of the tentative ARIMA noise model are estimated with maximum likelihood methods. If the estimates lie within the stationary-invertible bounds and are statistically significant, the residuals of the tentative model are diagnosed to determine whether the model’s residuals are not different than white noise. If the tentative model’s residuals satisfy this assumption, the statistically adequate model is accepted. Otherwise, the identification-estimation-diagnosis ARIMA noise model-building strategy continues iteratively until it yields a statistically adequate model. The Box-Jenkins ARIMA noise modeling strategy is illustrated with detailed analyses of twelve time series. The example analyses include non-Normal time series, stationary white noise, autoregressive and moving average time series, nonstationary time series, and seasonal time series. The time series models built in Chapter 3 are re-introduced in later chapters. Chapter 3 concludes with a discussion and demonstration of auxiliary modeling procedures that are not part of the Box-Jenkins strategy. These auxiliary procedures include the use of information criteria to compare models, unit root tests of stationarity, and co-integration.

Abstract:

A substantial body of musical literature for solo and ensemble percussion was created in the twentieth century. This book examines percussion literature’s evolution: how it came to be and the styles that composers embraced as they produced a large body of music for percussion instruments alone. The focus is on the music that was created, the various genres that arose, and the composers who contributed seminal works. The question is posed: What world and cultural events brought composers to reject the past and embrace modernism? The twentieth century is notable for its many technological advances as well as for the global conflicts that disrupted the lives of millions. Both had significant impact on the arts. Tape recorders, synthesizers, and computers became useful tools for the avant-garde composer. Artists, exiled from their homelands by the war’s devastation, arrived in the Americas with new ideas to share. On the West Coast of the United States, composers found that percussion music was an ideal accompaniment for a nascent modern dance movement. The end of World War II brought monumental change to higher education and to music education in the States. College-trained percussionists became an important resource for the modern composer, who contributed new solo and ensemble works to the percussion canon. The twentieth century witnessed the rise of the percussive arts to a status equal to that of other instrumental groups.

Old Norse Mythology treats the mythology of Scandinavia: the gods Þórr (Thor) with his hammer, the wily and duplicitous Óðinn (Odin), the sly Loki, and other mythological figures. They create the world, battle their enemies, and die at the end of the world, which arises anew with a new generation of gods. These stories were the mythology of the Vikings, but they were not written down until long after the conversion to Christianity, mostly in Iceland. The mythology of the Vikings was an oral mythology, without canonical or even fixed texts. Following contemporary research trends, this book recognizes that variation in time and space are to be expected, and it notes rather than tries to resolve inconsistencies. In addition to a broad overview of Nordic myths, the book presents a case study of one myth, which tells of how Þórr (Thor) fished up the World Serpent analysing the myth as a sacred text of the Vikings. Old Norse mythology also explores the debt we owe to medieval intellectuals, who were able to incorporate the old myths into new paradigms that helped the myths to survive when they were no longer part of a religious system, and it traces the use of the mythology in ideological contexts, from the Viking Age until the twenty-first century.

“É com grande prazer que faço a abertura desse relatório. Ele muito me orgulha, pois me representa, me homenageia e abre oportunidades para os meus. Meu nome é Anyky Gonçalves de Lima, mais conhecida como Anyky Lima. Tenho 65 anos e eu falo da importância de hoje ter o ambulatório trans aqui em Minas Gerais. Eu sou carioca e nunca tive acesso a saúde na minha juventude. Aos 12 anos de idade, eu fui expulsa de casa, por já me perceber uma pessoa trans, uma criança ainda. Naquela época, as pessoas não respeitavam a nossa identidade de gênero, e ainda não respeitam. Naquela época, não respeitavam o nosso nome social, e ainda não respeitam. Isso nos impedia de irmos aos lugares públicos, inclusive em hospitais. Olhavam pra gente na recepção de um serviço e via um nome masculino em nosso documento e chamavam a gente desse nome. Eu via muita gente, muitas amigas morrerem dentro de casa com vergonha de ir ao hospital, não saiam em lugares públicos por não serem respeitadas. Porque não tem nada pior que está numa recepção de um hospital, uma sala cheia de gente e o médico, a recepcionista ou qualquer outro funcionário gritar o nome masculino e levantar aquela mulher feita, toda produzida. O acesso a saúde no que se refere a um ambulatório trans, especializado para nós mulheres e homens trans, é muito recente. Na minha época, quando comecei a minha transição, não tinha. Fiz tudo sozinha, com erros e acertos. E hoje tem o ambulatório trans para nos acolher. Um orgulho muito grande que eu tenho é o ambulatório receber o meu nome. Foi uma homenagem que eu não vou esquecer. Normalmente as pessoas fazem homenagem para quem já morreu, e eu estou viva, "muito viva". Só lembrando que nos matam aos 35 anos e eu estou aqui resistindo a tudo isso. Então isso pra mim foi uma homenagem muito grande. Me sinto honrada com a consideração das pessoas por terem colocado o nome do ambulatório de Anyky Lima. Hoje eu sou uma usuária do serviço. Eu me consulto neste ambulatório e me sinto agradecida por, depois de tantos anos, ter um serviço que me atenda e atenda os meus, que me trata e tratam a minha população. Eu vivi 65 anos para ver essa maravilha que aconteceu, então eu acho que o ambulatório é pra mim a coisa mais importante que aconteceu em Minas Gerais, pois atende uma população que não tinha acesso nenhum a saúde e hoje são tratadas com dignidade e respeito.”
