Abstract:
Armenian has two main signifiers for ‘nose’, k‘it‘ and pinc‘, both remaining obscure. Presumably, they have no Indo-European origin. Body-part names usually are not borrowed. They present predominantly genuine (or substrate) forms, including ideophones, based on internal resources of the language, or terms, shaped through semantic shift of metaphors. Incidentally, the essential part of the Armenian body-part names includes lexemes of the clear IE provenance. The paper attempts to summarise the relevant material on and trace the possible background of the above terms.

Abstract:
Breathing blunt nose technique is one of the promising methods for reducing the drag of blunt-nosed body at hypersonic speeds. The air, traversed by the bow shock positioned ahead of the nose, at the stagnation region is allowed to enter through a hole at the blunt-nose and ejected at the rear part (base region) of the body. This manipulation reduces the positive pressure over the stagnation regions of the nose and increases the pressure at the base, resulting in reduced suction at the base. The simultaneous manifestation of reducing the compression at the nose and suction at the base regions results in reduction of the total drag. The drag reduction caused by the breathing blunt nose technique has been measured in a Mach 7 tunnel. Also, the drag and flow field around the blunt-nosed body, with and without breathing hole, has been computed. The aerodynamic characteristics of the breathing blunt nose model obtained experimentally are compared with the CFD results. It is found that the breathing results in 5% reduction in drag. The lift coefficient also comes down for the model with breathing nose. But the lift-to-drag ratio is found to be the same for both the cases; the blunt-nosed body with and without nose-hole.

Abstract:
The principal sources of aerodynamic drag on simple trains in tunnels are (a) surface skin friction and (b) stagnation pressure losses at the nose and tail. On sufficiently long trains, the first of these is dominant. On shorter trains, local losses can be more important. This paper seeks to provide a theoretical basis for predictions of the dependence of drag on the train/tunnel blockage ratio, attention being given to tunnel resistance as well as to train resistance. Hitherto, most predictions have relied on empirical formulae. It is shown that the train skin friction coefficient varies approximately linearly with the blockage ratio, βz. The dependence increases with increasing train roughness. The nose loss coefficient kN is shown to be smaller than 0.1 for reasonably streamlined noses. An approximate relationship between kN and βz is hypothesized. The tail loss coefficient kT is shown to be approximately equal to β2z for poorly streamlined tails. A tail shape coefficient is introduced for use with more streamlined tails.

Abstract:
The article investigates the problem of hydro-elastic interaction of a weak shock wave with a rigid nosed rotation shell preloaded with axial forces. The shell is enclosed in a rigid parabolic screen, i.e. the impact of the end face and the shock wave diffraction are not considered. Liquid is regarded to be perfectly compressible. Its applied summing hydrodynamic pressure during complex interaction with the shell surface can be classified into the incident, reflected and radiated waves. The problem of hydro-elastic interaction of these shock fronts with a preloaded parabolic rigid nosed shell in a related setting is reduced to the solution of the wave equations of nonlinear system of equations for shell motion under particular initial and boundary conditions, in which the dimensionless displacement of this nose section under the impact of hydrodynamic forces is determined by integrating its motion equation. The equations, describing the dependences of nose section displacements on shock wave interaction time, take into account generalized hydrodynamic forces, including the second category directly related to the mass of the attached fluid. Determination of stress-strain state in case of interaction with the shock wave in the liquid of elastic rotation paraboloid in the form of the shell containing a rigid insertion in the nose section is reduced to the solution of a nonlinear equations system of shell motion considering the boundary conditions along fastenings at the end face of the shell and interface conditions of the shell and insertion. Dimensionless displacements of the nose section caused by hydrodynamic forces are defined by integrating the equations of motion under the initial conditions along insertion offsets in the axial directions.

Abstract:
Construction work is often performed in close contact to existing buildings such as offices, homes and stores. The people working and living in these buildings may thereby be affected negatively by the noise occurring from the construction site. There are guidelines compiled by Environmental Protection Agency regarding the level of noise that should not be exceeded. It’s important to remember that these guidelines are only guidelines and not binding values. “Tillsynsmyndigheten” at “Länsstyrelsen” is responsible for the adherence of the guidelines and make decisions related to which noise levels are appropriate at the construction site. Even though the existence of the guidelines there are times when the construction company can disturb the third party. This does not always have to do with the fact that the noise levels have been exceeded. It could also occur if the information about upcoming disturbances has been unclear. Complaints may also occur when the guidelines are followed. By interviewing representatives at STRABAG Projektutveckling AB about disturbance caused by noise we have received their opinions and experience in the matter.  The company puts great effort to distribute the information about upcoming noise and posting it on billboards. By our opinion more effort should be added to planning upcoming projects and deciding what kind of protection should be used and the most efficient way of placing it due to its surroundings. These are questions that are to be decided in an early stage of the planning process. Additional information has been obtained through a questionnaire survey and interviews with Environmental Protection Agency, municipality and “Tillsynsmyndigheten”.

Abstract:
Noise is today defined as an unwanted sound that invades the lives of many people in their homes and at work. During a construction phase a large amount of noise is generated that often leads to community complaints. The construction business has to face this issue today when larger infrastructure projects are performed in highly dense areas. Therefore the aim of this Master’s Thesis is to investigate the effect construction noise has on humans and the perceived annoyance in the concerned studied areas, which Bilfinger Berger is contractor for. The impact was studied on both the third party around a construction site on Södermalm, Stockholm and on Bilfinger Berger’s employees on the site. The work concerns three areas, which are situated in the inner city of Stockholm and represent contracts of the infrastructure pro-jects Citybanan and Norra länken. The extensive noise emission during an infrastructure project is affecting the surrounding environment both due to the high noise level that is generated from a number of machines and work activities. Also due to the extensive time frame a project of this kind has. Therefore it is a complex problem to handle and essential for both contractor and client to handle properly. By using appropriate mitigation measures through both the planning stage, the construction phase and clear information towards all parties the impact can be reduced. Through a literature study among the existing science and observations of which mitigation measures are used today to reduce the noise level on sites, a base of theoretical knowledge could be built up for this study. The real noise impact among the affected parties was performed through a survey, which gave results that could be evaluated and discussed. The results from the surveys show that the third party around the workplace is definitely affected by the noise generated from the production. It is also possible to assume that the most affected are persons, which spend a lot of the daytime at home, and therefore feels the noise very disturbing and has to adapt their life after the project’s progress. Through the survey among the employees at Bilfinger Berger a certain acceptance exist towards the noise even if they feel disturbed by the noise. The conclusion drawn from this is that the human attitude to noise impact becomes more positive if they have the knowledge about why and how it arises even if the noise has the same impact on everyone. Therefore the noise issue has to be raised in future projects, even during the tender phase when noise is always easier to control in an earlier stage.

A maternal and fetal genetic susceptibility to spontaneous preterm birth has been the focus of scientific research to improve the understanding of the pathophysiology of prematurity. The MBL2 gene participates in the regulation of maternal and fetal inflammatory response, while the NOS3 gene is related to control of uterine contractility during pregnancy, it is possible that both are associated with preterm birth. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the influence of functional polymorphisms in these genes on spontaneous preterm birth, controlling for socioeconomic, demographic and gestational risks. We conducted a clinical study with a comparison group of 189 puerperal -newborn dyads, with 104 of spontaneous preterm delivery and 85 of delivery at term, from June 2013 to August 2014, at the Hospital das Clinicas, Federal University of Pernambuco and the Hospital Agamenon Magalhães in Recife. The exclusion criteria were multiple pregnancy, fetal malformation and congenital infection. Peripheral blood and of umbilical cord was collected for DNA isolation. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Conventional followed by sequencing of the PCR products, and Real Time PCR was performed for genotyping MBL2 and NOS3, respectively. The manual analysis of allelic sequences MBL2 used the CodonCode Aligner 5.0 program, while haplotypes were observed through Haploview program. The allelic discrimination of NOS3 gene used the SDS 2.3 software. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) through bivariate association tests and logistic regression. In the bivariate analysis, we found an association of changes in codons 54 and 57 of breast MBL2 gene and the variants rs7096206 (X / Y) and codon 52 of neonates with spontaneous preterm delivery. The haplotype LYA predominated in the total sample, more observed in the preterm group, while LYB haplotype was more frequent in the preterm delivery group. Additionally, the preterm mothers had a greater frequency of haplotypes that lead to high production of the MBL protein while in the term delivery prevailed ones that cause a low protein production. The genetic polymorphism of the gene NOS3 mother showed borderline association with the occurrence of prematurity. In multivariate analysis, the variation in codon 54 breast MBL2 gene, a history of preterm delivery, the occurrence of premature rupture of membranes, the presence of urinary tract infection at birth and low weight of pregnant women showed association with outcome. The result agrees with the multifactorial etiology of preterm birth and suggests that high levels of MBL protein may represent risk for this complication. These data should be interpreted with caution because of the small sample size, but provide relevant exploratory information about the influence of MBL2 and NOS3 genes in prematurity. In addition, they support the importance of prenatal care suitable for identifying other maternal risk factors associated with spontaneous preterm delivery.

Recent studies have advanced the understanding of municipal level party organizational behaviour, highlighting, where present, different levels of institutionalization. These studies, however, only able to show this diversity at a given point in time. This present study aims to describe the process of (i) brazilian municipalities presence by the parties (ii) the organization of this process between 2007 to 2015. At the end of this study, we can see a high variation within these structures on the specified period. Some initial hypotheses can be attributed to these changes. Among them, the profile of the cities influence the political parties in making decisions between making a firm long term commitment to an area or only contesting in local public office elections. Another possibility is that the less organized parties in the municipalities are the very same that are less able to change their state party leadership. These issues are associated with both the organizational capacity a party has with which to pursue its multiple objectives and also the extent to which the internal democratic processes of these institutions allow the base access to the decision making process.

Abstract:
In a State's political system, the role that the bureaucracy plays constitute a central issue, as the efficiency of the government's policies and the realization of the democratic principle are at stake. From the 1990's on, the bureaucracy has suffered a lot of criticisms blaming its failures and its allegedly excessive autonomy from the elected political power. Thus, at the beginning of the 21st century, many reforms inspired by the New Public Management movement were implemented, in order to – among other things – reinforce the political leadership and control over the senior civil servants. Our work examines these reforms and analyses the evolutions perceived in the decision-making process and in the politico-administrative relations during the last fifteen years, while rejecting the oversimplifying approach that necessarily brings in opposition elected politicians and civil servants. The case studies of the government Koizumi (2001-2006) and the Democratic Party of Japan‟s governments (2009-2012), which revealed incremental transformations but also the persistence of some pre-existing practices, invite us to consider other explanatory variables than the mere institutional change. In order to do so, we use theoretical tools created by the multiple neo-institutionalisms, insisting on the „weight of the past‟ and on the influence of the different ideas shared by the actors. We base our work on a corpus of primary and secondary sources, especially written in Japanese, on quantitative data, and also on some interviews conducted with Japanese senior civil servants

Abstract:
Yes
The tranquillity in national parks worldwide is currently under threat from intrusion of anthropogenic noise of a growing tourism industry and activity related to park management. This was addressed by creating informative tranquillity maps, where perceived tranquillity can be considered a key indicator of soundscape quality in natural areas. Tranquillity of an area can be assessed using TRAPT (Tranquillity Rating Prediction Tool), that has been developed and refined for assessing urban green spaces, national parks and wilderness areas in the United Kingdom. The subjective response to helicopter noise levels of a sample group of 35 people representing the general New Zealand population was obtained, based on visual and audio stimuli that were collected in Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park. These results were used to produce a revised TRAPT equation. It was discovered that levels under 32 dBA correspond to an excellent level of tranquillity. This thresholdwas used to produce a noise level exposure calculation for two national parks using noise prediction model AEDT (Aviation Environmental Development Tool). Contours representing tranquillity duration were then calculated and plotted, to serve as a planning tool for use by the Department of Conservation. A similar approach could be used for other national parks worldwide

Abstract:
Due to the tendency to increase the velocity of high-speed trains, concerns about their probable events have increased. Since train’s frontal nose is the first part of the train which is damaged at the frontal impact, specific attention should be paid to the design of this part. In this study an effort has been conducted to design a nose with light weight which can absorb maximum amount of energy that is possible when a frontal collision occurs. To this aim and with attention to aerodynamic considerations, application of aluminum honeycomb (HC) sandwich panel as an internal layer of train nose has been studied. This paper includes two main parts. The first part is dedicated to the simulation of aluminum HC sandwich panel with both shell and solid elements under dynamic crush loads. While the frontal collision of nose with different internal layer thicknesses of HC has been simulated in the second part and an optimum thickness has been proposed based on the generated results. It has been demonstrated that for all thicknesses amount of energy absorption has been increased at least 35%. Finite element method using LS-DYNA commercial package has been used for the numerical simulation. The results have been validated with available experimental results and acceptable agreement has been observed.

Abstract:
The aesthetic and functional significance of the external nose gives particular relevance to the treatment of its injuries. The social importance of the problem is caused by the widespread prevalence of nasoseptal injuries, the frequency of development ofserious post-traumatic disorders of the appearance and normal physiology of patients, and unsatisfactory results of treatment of this pathology. The pyramid of the nose is the most vulnerable and fragile part of the facial skull, therefore, fractures of the nasal bones constitute a significant proportion of all injuries of the musculoskeletal system and occupy the third place among the total number of fractures of the human skeleton, are the most common among emergency conditions of ENT organs. In the general population, patients with this pathology account for up to 0.021%.

Abstract:
Morphing is a technology with high potential to reduce emissions in aviation by adapting the shape of the wings to varying external operating conditions. This paper is presenting results from the EU FP7 funded CHANGE project, where different concepts to adapt a UAV wing airfoil to different demands were investigated. The paper is concentrating on the design and experimental testing of a droop nose, which transforms the leading edge part of the 60 cm chord airfoil from a NACA 6510 shape for loiter and low speed to a NACA 2510 shape for a high speed mission. This paper is presenting the use of an especially soft skin, which reduces the needed force for morphing. That way the requirements for the servos driving the droop nose could be reduced significantly. This paper is showing the implications of such a soft design on the accuracy of the shape generated. For such a skin design, the driving mechanism of the system is designed as a compliant mechanism, which was generated by topology optimization, taking into account aerodynamic loads. For easy manufacturing reasons, thermoplastic polylactic acid (PLA) with zero warp property was used for the manufacturing of this compliant mechanism. Finally deformation measurements of the morphing skin were carried out in a series of lab tests. The match between measured and numerically derived section is quite good, especially in the root region of the wing. Finally an example of an alternative concept to the soft approach is presented. It is the metal based compliant mechanism with a rather stiff GFRP skin. A discussion on the use of different materials and the way forward towards 3D skin optimization is wrapping up the paper.

In ASME 2017 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2017-72661.

Full text
Abstract:
High-precision spindles have significant influence on the machining precision and finishing quality largely due to their motion errors. However, the analysis of rotation accuracy is quite not easy in design stage because of the neglecting of geometric errors and deformations of parts in the traditional dimension chains. Hence, a theoretical analysis model is built in present study to do the prediction. The 3D error accumulation path is recognized by Datum Flow Chain (DFC) and the key tolerances are modeled by Small Displacement Torsor (SDT). Thereafter, the variation propagation is conducted by Homogeneous Transformation Matrices (HTM) and the geometric misalignment in the spindle is calculated. Then, an FEA model is built with Timoshenko beam elements and the deformation is calculated after the geometric misalignment is applied to the model. As spindle rotates, the trajectory of the spindle nose is obtained. Finally, the Monte Carlo (MC) method is used to get the distribution and the range of motion errors. To verify the feasibility and reliability of the analysis model, the radial and axial motion errors of a double supported high-precision spindle are analyzed.

Abstract:
Modern freight locomotives are built to crashworthiness standards that are defined in Subpart D of Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 229 and Association of American Railroads (AAR) S-580 standards [1, 2]. The first freight locomotive crashworthiness standard, AAR S-580, was released in 1989 and became effective as of August 1990 [3]. Locomotives that were manufactured before the 1990, so-called “legacy”, lack the crew protection offered by the modern “crashworthy” locomotives [4]. While legacy locomotives, such as narrow-nose designs that were manufactured before 1990s, are generally relegated to non-lead locomotive service in Class I railroads, these units are sometimes used in mainline service. Even though the number of narrow-nose locomotives has declined, there remains a risk of injuries and fatalities for the crew for the next several years. The scope of this study is the following; • The assessment of injuries and fatalities from collisions involving legacy locomotives, • The crashworthiness evaluation of collision posts for a sample legacy (narrow-nose, legacy) locomotive assembled in the 1960s and rebuilt in 2001, • Analysis of alternative collision post designs to meet and exceed the collision post requirements in the 2001 version of AAR S-580.

Abstract:
Breathing, defined as the exchange of gases between the respiratory system and the environment, is an essential process for life. The human respiratory system can be divided into three parts: (i) nose, mouth, and nasopharynx, (ii) trachea, and (iii) lungs. The human lung can be further subdivided into conducting airways which are non-alveolated and comprise the upper part of lung, and the acini which consist of flexible, alveolated airways and are responsible for gas exchange [1]. The alveoli collectively provide a large surface area (∼70 m2) for efficient gas exchange [1]; oxygen diffuses into the blood through the alveolar epithelium, whereas carbon dioxide diffuses in the opposite direction from the blood to the lung.

Full text
Abstract:
This study develops an analytical thermal model for temperature predictions in finish hard turning by a new tool. Tool life in finish hard turning is limited by part surface quality, e.g., white layer formations (microstructural alterations). Thermal damage due to temperature rise at machined surfaces is the primary source of such surface degradation. Thus, a thermal model capable of machined surface temperature predictions will enable part surface damage assessment as well as thermal management strategy for process optimization. A mechanistic model that accounts for nonuniform uncut chip thickness across the cutting edge is employed to estimate three-component machining forces. Machining forces and cutting characteristics, i.e., shear angle and chip-tool contact, approximate the heat intensity and geometry of shear plane and rake face heat sources. Due to tool nose radius, the two heat sources are three dimensional in nature and are further discretized into small segments, each treated as an individual rectangular heat source. Individual small heat-source segments are then used to study temperature rise in machining, using modified moving oblique heat source (shear plane) and modified moving and stationary heat sources (rake face) developed by Komanduri and Hou [1,2]. Temperature rise due to all small heat-source segments is superimposed, with proper coordinate transformation, to obtain final temperature distributions due to overall heat sources. The thermal model can be applied to study machining parameter effects on machining temperatures. It is indicated that maximum machined-surface temperatures are adversely affected by increasing feed rate and cutting speed, but favorably by increasing depth of cut. Tool rake face temperatures increase with cutting speed and feed rate as well. However, rake face temperatures decrease with increased depth of cut at high feed rates, but, reversely at low feed. The model has also been tested to evaluate white layer formations in finish hard turning. Tool nose radius effects have been analyzed and the results show that the smaller the tool nose radius, the deeper the white layer under identical machining conditions. Experimental results show good agreement with analytical predictions.

In this study, part of the data sets from 4 large Swiss and German aircraft noise impact studies are re-analysed using logistic multi-level regression models. The aim is to investigate the assumptions that the prediction of a) the percentage of persons highly annoyed by aircraft noise or b) the percentage of persons highly sleep disturbed by aircraft noise can be improved if (i) instead of the energy-equivalent continuous noise level alone, either additional or alternative, more frequency-based aircraft noise metrics and (ii) also airport-specific characteristics are used as predictors. The results support both assumptions; both regarding the percentage of persons highly annoyed and regarding the percentage of persons highly sleep disturbed.

Abstract:
The map area lies about 40 km northwest of Baffinland's iron mine. Dykes of unit mAnA3 within unit mAnA2 suggest that unit mAnA2 predates unit mAnA3. Unit nAMqf, basal Mary River Group unit, includes regolith material from units mAnA2 and mAnA3. Unit mAnAm may include some dykes of unit nAMb. The Mary River Group was deposited in a volcanic-arc environment, yielding zircon U-Pb ages mostly in the range of 2.88 to 2.72 Ga. Iron-formation (unit nAMi) is approximately 276 m thick locally, with oxide facies (unit nAMio) being most abundant. The quartzite triangle west of 'Iron lake' (unofficial name) may be a small horst. The main east-west-trending synclinal fold, including the area around 'Iron lake' and the no. 4 ore deposit, is upright, nearly isoclinal, and plunges mostly easterly at both ends with small scale anticlines and synclines in the middle. Magnetite constitutes about 75% of high-grade iron deposits in the north limb, whereas hematite predominates in south-limb deposits. K-Ar and Rb-Sr ages indicate middle Paleoproterozoic overprinting. Central Borden Fault Zone was active at ca. 1.27 Ga and during or after Ordovician time.
