Abstract:
This article explores how national histories are constructed in the museums of Norway. It does so through a comparative perspective, whereby museum displays of national past in Norway are being compared to museum displays of national past in the People’s Republic of China. This will involve comparing narratives, museological approaches, rationale and purposes of museum displays in the two countries. Fieldwork research in museums in Norway and China suggests that if national pasts are obviously unique to the historical trajectories of each country, their museum renditions are structured in an intriguingly similar way. Museum displays of national pasts in Norway develop around a set of themes including myths of ancestry and descent; epics of resistance leading the embryonic nation through a dark era and towards a “Golden Age”; a core of moral and aesthetic values; notions of national modernity; and selective amnesia. I will show how similar topics can be found in museum displays of the past in Chinese museums. The comparative perspective of the analysis enables me to assess the uniqueness of museum representations of the past in Norway and at the same time to explore analogies in the museum construction of national narratives beyond the European context, through the case study of China. This will lead me to put forward the hypothesis of the coagulation, at international level, of a canon for the museum representation of national history.

Abstract:
As a result of climate change, Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) is dying across Europe. One of the primary reasons for this is the cultivation of unsuitable spruce provenances and ecotypes. This study deals with the growth and genetics of the ecotypes of Norway spruce, the most important tree species of the Czech Republic. At the study site, namely Cukrák, an experimental site was established in 1964 to plant three basic spruce ecotypes: low-elevation (LE), medium-elevation (ME) and high-elevation (HE) ecotype. A dendrometric inventory, dendrochronological sampling and genetic analyses were carried out on individual trees in 45 to 46 years old spruce stands. The ME ecotype was the most productive in terms of its carbon sequestration potential, while the HE ecotype had the lowest radial growth. All ecotypes exhibited a noteworthy negative correlation between tree-ring growth and seasonal temperature, annual temperature, previous year September to current year August temperature, June to July temperature, as well as individual monthly temperatures from previous May to current August. The relationship of annual and seasonal precipitation to growth was significant only for the LE and ME ecotypes, but precipitation from previous year September to current year August and precipitation from current June to July were the most significant for all ecotypes, where the ME had the highest r value. The HE ecotype does not adapt well to a dry climate and appears to be unsuitable compared to the other ecotypes under the studied conditions. This study also documented intra-population genetic variation within years of low growth, as evidenced by significant clonal heritability. The selection of the appropriate spruce ecotypes is essential for the stability and production of future stands and should become an important pillar of forest adaptation to climate change.

Abstract:
Objectives: Lasting, unexplained and high levels of pain may cause anxiety in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome. The objectives of the current study were to test assumptions of the association between pain and anxiety in patients diagnosed with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) and to clarify the role of depression in this relationship. Methods: Data were collected from 664 participants (age 18-65 years) with 133 ME/CFS patients and 201 healthy controls from Norway and 330 CFS patients from Spain. Binary logistic regression model was applied to test relationships between the included variables in the samples. Results: Both pain and depression made significant direct contributions to the level of anxiety. The strongest risk for higher levels of anxiety was the combination of high levels of depression and high levels of pain in the overall sample (OR = 49.70; P < 0.001), not so much in the Spanish cohort (OR = 11.99; P < 0.0001) and most of all in the Norwegian cohort (OR = 88.21; P < 0.001) sample. Conclusions: It was the combination of high pain levels and high levels of depression that to the greatest extent increased the risk of anxiety in patients with CFS/ME. Whatever diagnostic criterion that is applied, anxiety and depression should be mandatory to assess in the clinical assessments performed for diagnosing the ME/CFS. Approaches addressing anxiety-related pain and treatment of depression should be warranted.

Abstract:
Objective A few earlier studies have found impaired endothelial function in patients with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS). The present study investigated large-vessel and small-vessel endothelial function in patients with ME/CFS. Study design The study was a substudy of the RituxME trial, a national, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase III study on the effect of rituximab vs. placebo in ME/CFS patients in Norway. Flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and post-occlusive reactive hyperemia (PORH) was measured at baseline and after 18 months of treatment in 39 patients and compared with healthy controls. Other outcome measures were symptom severity and various physical function measures. Results ME/CFS patients had markedly reduced FMD compared to healthy controls at baseline (5.1% vs. 8.2%, p< 0.0001, adjusted for arterial diameter and sex), and significantly lower microvascular regulation measured by PORH than healthy controls (1354 PU vs. 2208 PU, p = 0.002). There were no differences between the treatment and placebo groups in symptom changes or vascular measures. As a group, the ME/CSF patients experienced a slight, but significant improvement in clinical symptoms after 18 months. PORH, but not FMD, was similarly improved (1360 to 1834 PU, p = 0.028). There was no significant correlation between FMD and PORH. There were non-significant tendencies towards associations between symptom severity/physical function measures and lower FMD and PORH, and a significant correlation between PORH and steps per 24 hours at baseline. Conclusions ME/CFS patients had reduced macro- and microvascular endothelial function, indicating that vascular homeostasis may play a role in the clinical presentation of this disease.

Abstract:
Over the past few decades, increasing populations of cervid species in the Baltic region have reduced the quality and vitality of cultivated Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) stands. This study evaluated the effect of bark stripping on the volume growth of spruce trees in Latvia. Data collection took place in two forest stands. In each stand, 20 Norway spruce trees were sampled, 10 with visible bark damage scars and 10 control trees. Stem discs were collected from control trees at specified heights (0 m, 0.5 m, 1 m, 1.3 m, and 2 m, and then at one-metre intervals up to the top) and from damaged trees at additional specific points relative to the damage. Each disc was sanded and scanned; tree ring widths were measured in 16 radial directions using WinDendro 2012a software. Annual volume growth reconstruction was performed for each tree. Changes in relative volume growth were analysed in interaction with scar parameters, tree type (damaged/control), and pre-damage volume using linear regression models. The significance of parameter interactions was assessed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Pairwise comparisons of estimated marginal means (EMMs) were conducted using Tukey’s HSD post hoc test. No significant effect of bark stripping on the total stem volume increment was detected. However, the length of bark stripping scars had a significant impact on relative volume growth in the lower parts of the stems. These findings underscore the importance of further research examining a broader spectrum of cervid damage intensity and the effects of repeated damage on tree survival and growth.

Abstract:
Summary Objectives To examine the level of activity in online discussion forums for chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalopathy (CFS/ME) compared to other disorders. We hypothesized the level of activity to be higher in CFS/ME online discussion forums. Design Observational study Setting Norway, which has more than 80% household coverage in internet access, September 2009 Participants Twelve Norwegian disorder-related online discussion forums Main outcome measures Number of registered users and number of posted messages on each discussion forum Results Two forums were targeted towards individuals with CFS/ME. These forums had the highest number of registered users per estimated 1,000 cases in the population (50.5 per 1,000 and 29.7 per 1,000), followed by a site for drug dependency (5.4 per 1,000). Counting the number of posted messages per 1,000 cases gave similar indications of high online activity in the CFS/ME discussion forums. Conclusions CFS/ME online forums had more than ten times the relative activity of any other disorder or condition related forum. This high level of activity may have multiple explanations. Individuals suffering from a stigmatized condition of unknown aetiology may use the internet to look for explanations of symptoms or to seek out alternative treatments. Internet forum activity may also be reinforced by the creation of in-group identity and pre-morbid personality traits. More knowledge on the type and quality of information provided in online forums is urgently needed.

Abstract:
There is a striking lack of systematic knowledge regarding the symptom burden, capacity for activities of daily living, and supportive measures for the most severely ill ME/CFS patients. The present study seeks to address this through a national, Internet-based survey targeting patients with severe and very severe ME/CFS and their carers. Responses from 491 patients were included, with 444 having severe and 47 very severe ME/CFS with the classification based on the best estimate from patient responses. In addition, 95 respondents were reclassified from patients’ own classification to moderate and included for comparison. The onset was before 15 years of age for 45% in the very severe and 32% in the severe group. Disease duration was more than 15 years for 19% in the very severe and 27% in the severe group. Patient symptom burden was extensive. The most severely affected were totally bedridden, unable to talk, and experienced dramatic worsening of symptoms after minimal activity or sensory stimuli. Care and assistance from healthcare and social services were often described as insufficient or inadequate, often worsening the symptom load and burden of care. A substantial lack of disease knowledge among healthcare providers in general was reported. Yet approximately 60% in the severe and very severe groups found services provided by occupational therapists and family doctors (general practitioners) helpful, while a smaller proportion experienced appropriate help from other health personnel groups. This indicates that help and support are highly needed and possible to provide. On the other hand, this must be approached carefully, as a substantial number of patients experienced deterioration from contact with healthcare personnel. Family carers described an extensive burden of care with often inadequate help from healthcare providers or municipal authorities. Patient care by family members of very severe ME/CFS patients constituted more than 40 h a week for 71% of this patient group. The carers described a large negative impact on their work and financial situation, and on their mental wellbeing. We conclude that childhood onset was common, burden of disease was extensive, and support from responsible societal health and social support providers was commonly grossly inadequate.

Abstract:
Written in first person, NOTHING NORMAL HAPPENS TO ME is a memoir in essays that traces the narrator’s journey from self-destruction to creation. Part one encompasses the narrator’s lost years, after she breaks free from the tyranny of her mentally ill mother and goes to live on her own at 17. Part two provides context for those bad girl years, exploring her childhood when she identified with her histrionic mother. Part three comprises stories about the narrator’s years of awakening when she seeks out transcendence, faith, and a family of her own. The pieces vary tonally and stylistically as they attempt to trace the maturing voice of the narrator. Like SEEKING RAPTURE: SCENES FROM A WOMAN’S LIFE by Kathryn Harrison, this collection centers on a young girl, who without her mother’s love, struggles to love herself. It is both a cautionary tale and a story of redemption.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the social construction of disability in Australian national cinema throughout the 1990s. During that decade, disability was an issue that remained in the background of many film narratives and is (still) under-theorised in academic scholarship. Disability continues to be tangential to many social critiques, particularly in relation to cultural diversity and national identity. When it is foregrounded, as in Liz Ferrier's (2001) work, its theoretical premise is chiefly located in a damaged body, rather than examined through the lens of cultural construction. The growing number of culturally diverse filmmakers in the Australian film industry during the 1990s initiated a critical focus on diversity, multiculturalism and minority group interests. However, an examination of the social construction of disability is conspicuously absent. I argue that a disability identity that focuses attention away from the body and onto society should be incorporated into notions of diversity concerning Australian national cinema. In this thesis I investigate both thematic and stylistic representations of disability with reference to socio-political contexts and influences. A disability identity - as it is included or excluded from Australian national identity - is explored through a variety of close readings of local films. I examine the methods filmmakers employ to problematise diversity in relation to the limitations of dominant representations of disability. This thesis recognises the historical lack of scholarship in relation to disability as a diversity issue in Australian national cinema of the 1990s and is an attempt to open up this field to new modes of criticism.

Context: Operating in different contexts and segments, embedded systems (ESs) are increasingly present in everyday society. The ESs usually operate invisibly to the user but, even so, possible software failures cease to pose risks, causing serious material and financial damage. Taking into consideration the safety of users of ESs, government entities and institutions around the world have studied and created standards development and SEs test to ensure systems that are more robust and free from defects that may cause faults that may endanger the user. However, standards are usually applied at the level of code, which increases substantially the resources to be used if there are defects in the SE. Objective: To present the UL/ME Strategy that addresses the shortcomings described in SEs certification standard, UL 1998 level modeling, more specifically, in the model of Statechart states. The purpose is to anticipate the identification of defects, to generate code that has more chance to meet the standard requirements, preventing rework and therefore improving quality. Methodology: The study was conducted in three stages: first stage identified the defects treated by the standard UL 1998, tabulating these defects, and then, link them to the SEs components. In the second stage were designed generic models for each component and also the ESs models that represents the tests required by the standard for each components, and in the third step, it was created two proposed for use UL/ME Strategy, one for ESs already implemented and other for ESs in development. These proposals were used for evaluation of the strategy using two real ESs, one already implemented and other in development. Results: According to the requirements of UL 1998 standard, the use of Strategy UL/ME helped to correct the defects of the first ES and evaluated the development of the second ES. Conclusion: the use of Strategy UL/ME assisted in the correction of an SE already implemented and modeling of an ES in development.

Danielsson, Nina. "”Sexiness with humor : those things are normal for me” - Undersökning av kvinnlig och manlig maskerad i några utav David LaChapelles bilder." Thesis, Halmstad University, School of Humanities (HUM), 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hh:diva-2541.

Abstract:

Abstract:
An investigation into the impact of generalised maximum entropy solutions on the study of queues with or without arrival balking and their applications to congestion management in communication networks Keywords: Queues, Balking, Maximum Entropy (ME) Principle, Global Balance (GB), Queue Length Distribution (QLD), Generalised Geometric (GGeo), Generalised Exponential (GE), Generalised Discrete Half Normal (GdHN), Congestion Management, Packet Dropping Policy (PDP) Generalisations to links between discrete least biased (i.e. maximum entropy (ME)) distribution inferences and Markov chains are conjectured towards the performance modelling, analysis and prediction of general, single server queues with or without arrival balking. New ME solutions, namely the generalised discrete Half Normal (GdHN) and truncated GdHN (GdHNT) distributions are characterised, subject to appropriate mean value constraints, for inferences of stationary discrete state probability distributions. Moreover, a closed form global balance (GB) solution is derived for the queue length distribution (QLD) of the M/GE/1/K queue subject to extended Morse balking, characterised by a Poisson prospective arrival process, i.i.d. generalised exponential (GE) service times and finite capacity, K. In this context, based on comprehensive numerical experimentation, the latter GB solution is conjectured to be a special case of the GdHNT ME distribution. ii Owing to the appropriate operational properties of the M/GE/1/K queue subject to extended Morse balking, this queueing system is applied as an ME performance model of Internet Protocol (IP)-based communication network nodes featuring static or dynamic packet dropping congestion management schemes. A performance evaluation study in terms of the model’s delay is carried out. Subsequently, the QLD’s of the GE/GE/1/K censored queue subject to extended Morse balking under three different composite batch balking and batch blocking policies are solved via the technique of GB. Following comprehensive numerical experimentation, the latter QLD’s are also conjectured to be special cases of the GdHNT. Limitations of this work and open problems which have arisen are included after the conclusions

Abstract:
This study offers a comparative analysis of Rosario Castellanos' Balún-Canán and Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima, novels that provide examples on how children construct their identity in hybrid communities in southeastern Mexico and the U.S. southwest. The protagonists grow and develop in a context where they need to build bridges between their European and Amerindian roots in the middle of external influences that complicate the construction of a new mestizo consciousness. In order to attain that consciousness and free themselves from their divided selves, these children receive the aid of an indigenous mentor who teaches them how to establish a dialogue with their past, nature, and their social reality. The protagonists undertake that negotiation by transgressing the rituals of a society immersed in colonial dual thinking. They also create mechanisms to re-interpret their past and tradition in order to create an image of themselves that is not imposed by the status quo. In both novels, the protagonists have to undergo similar processes to overcome their identity crises, including transculturation, the creation of sites of memory, and a transition from orality to writing. Each of them resorts to creative writing and becomes a sort of shaman who pulls together the "spirits" from the past, selects them, and organizes them in a narration of childhood that is undertaken from adulthood. The results of this enterprise are completely different in the cases of both protagonists because the historical and social contexts vary. The boy in Bless Me, Ultima can harmoniously gather the elements to construct his identity, while the girl in Balún-Canán fails because of the pressures of a male-centered and highly racist society.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter focuses on how the coronavirus pandemic disrupted ‘normal’ academic life and travel through an analysis of my own travel history over the past decade. After contextualising the ways in which quarantines and confinement radically decreased travel, the chapter has three parts. In the first part, I document my own curriculum vitae of academic travel over the past decade and quantitatively measure my estimated CO2 emissions. Next, I seek to situate the value of such academic travel in both quantitative and qualitative terms, through extrinsic measures such as publications and impact and through intrinsic values such as the experience of different cultures and places. Lastly, I look at the transition to virtual events and my own participation in online events during the past nine months and consider the relation between physical and virtual meetings within academic practices. Insofar as the pandemic demonstrated our ability to transform academic travel and accelerate the use of remote meetings within academic practices, a pressing concern is how to find ways of extending this into the post-pandemic phase. Among the questions I ask in conclusion are: What possibilities are there for more seriously extending remote no-fly meetings to address the climate emergency? And what are the implications of such changes, both positive and negative?

Abstract:
AbstractAcademics are part of a small minority that are responsible for disproportionate air travel emissions. Responding to high aviation emissions requires that the complexities of academic air travel practices are understood in specific geographical and institutional contexts. This chapter addresses the work-sociology of academic aeromobility in the context of the global periphery. We report on a programme of interviews conducted prior to COVID-19 with academics at the University of Otago (Aotearoa/New Zealand), where the aeromobility practices of academics are uniquely shaped by extreme geographical distance. Our empirical contribution is presented in the four themes that emerged from our analysis: complex drivers; selective substitution; ‘Don’t weaken me!’ and assorted scalar accountabilities. We then discuss aspects of resistance to change but also avenues of opportunity to reimagine academic air travel practices, which have been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. We specifically address the emergence of a post-COVID ‘new normal’ and conclude with the urgent need for collective action that is coordinated among individual academics, institutions, disciplinary associations and conference organisers. Entrenching the ‘new normal’ will be critical to resolving the unsustainable aeromobilities of academics and institutions that are globally distant.

Abstract The beginning of the 1960s was characterized by several turnarounds. The generational change at the top of the family company Nyegaard & Co. obviously mattered and so did a gradual change in drug regulation in particular and in state policies in general. Profits from sales on the Norwegian markets grew thanks to higher prices, and national industrial policy prepared for assisting small high-tech companies in their quest to grow internationally. Obviously, having Thrombotest and Isopaque—two new and original exportable products—mattered for Nyegaard & Co.’s repurposing of its strategic aim away from “me too” drugs for Norway to pursuing fully fledged research strategies. Finding that particular research strategy, however, proved to be immensely difficult and a source of tension and conflict. Finally, the arguments of the head of the contrast media research won out: the company should follow its specialized knowledge and use the international networks created by being within the contrast media sector.

In SPE/ICoTA Well Intervention Conference and Exhibition. SPE, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.2118/208993-ms.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Sustained Casing Pressure (SCP) due to integrity concerns on a deepwater subsea producer in US GoM required the operator to isolate the reservoir. During a previous intervention, an R-nipple plug & prong had been installed and tested to isolate the reservoir pressure. Within six months after the plug installation, tubing and annulus pressure began increasing, indicating fluid was leaking past the plug & prong. As a result, the well required a new barrier with an additional integrity verification method. A V0 rated Medium Expansion Retrievable Bridge Plug (ME) was chosen to remediate the SCP. The ME was conveyed open water on E-Line, via a Riserless Light Well Intervention vessel. The operator performed extensive testing to confirm the integrity of the new barrier, relying on a novel Barrier Verification System (BVS) to wirelessly transmit pressure data from below the ME. This technology allowed barrier testing to be performed while directly monitoring pressure on either side of the ME. A second barrier was established by setting another ME, using data from the DHPGs for integrity verification. The distinguishing factor of this intervention was utilizing the barrier verification system to confirm barrier integrity. The BVS allowed the pressure differential across the plug to be read at surface in real-time. During the positive pressure test, the BVS readings showed that additional pressure had to be applied to achieve the required differential across the ME. During the twelve-hour extended inflow test, pressure on the BVS gauge below the ME gradually increased. This pressure signature confirmed that the SCP was due to fluid leaking across the previously installed R-profile plug. Based on these results, the operator concluded the R-profile plug was likely impaired during its original pressure test, but the leak rate had been too low to detect in the pressure test. The ability of the BVS to monitor the pressure beneath the ME confirmed that the ME was holding pressure in both directions, and this data provided additional verification that the ME had successfully isolated the reservoir. Thus, the BVS assured the operator that the ME would prevent further SCP on the well. The BVS provided comprehensive downhole barrier verification that exceeded the operator’s isolation standards as well as the regulator’s. As a result, the operator now has the assurance they will not have to return to the well until it is time to plug and abandon. This GoM job was performed with web-based execution and remote monitoring from the product technical support team in Norway, giving extra confidence to the novel technology in this high-profile operation.

Abstract:
Cleft Palate is a craniofacial syndrome in which the two plates that form the hard palate are not completely joined. As a result, the soft tissue anatomy of the Eustachian Tube (ET) is altered. The ET is a collapsible tube which connects the middle ear (ME) with the nasopharynx (NP). The ET must be periodically opened to equalize ME and NP pressures and drain ME fluids. In healthy adults, ET openings occur during swallowing, where muscle contraction deforms the surrounding soft tissue. However, changes in tissue anatomy may lead to ET dysfunction (i.e. closure during swallowing) and the development of ME disorders such as Otitis Media (OM)[1]. These disorders are especially problematic in infants with cleft palate as they hinder speech, hearing and psychosocial development. Although surgical procedures can be used to repair a cleft palate, these procedures do not typically account the possible development of ET dysfunction and/or OM.

Abstract:
Otitis Media (OM) is an inflammation of the middle ear (ME) that is the most commonly diagnosed childhood illness and the cost of treating OM has been estimated at four billion dollars annually. [1] The onset of OM is typically due to bacterial/viral infections that cause tissue swelling, rapid ME gas exchange and painful sub-ambient ME pressures. Normally, periodic openings of the ET are used to relieve ME pressures. However, the up-regulation of various adhesion proteins within the ET lumen make it difficult for the surrounding muscles to open the ET. The goal of this study is to use computational models to investigate how changes in adhesion dynamics during inflammation influence ET function in three different patient populations: healthy adults, normal children, and CP infants. We have developed a multi-scale computational models of the ET based on histo-morphological data obtained in each population. Adhesive forces within the lumen are modeled as non-linear, reputable spring elements. These models indicate that tissue morphology and mechanics can significantly influence the ET’s response to inflammatory adhesion forces. Specifically, changes in mucosal tissue stiffness and TVP muscle forces are most effective in overcoming inflammatory adhesion forces.

This paper presents practical eulerian rough wall boundary conditions for particle mean velocity and fluctuating components. The model derives from a pdf approach and the Sommerfeld particle-wall rebound theory [1]. We have implemented these boundary conditions in 2D Euler/Euler code “Me´lodif” by neglecting the “shadow effect” [2] and assuming an half-gaussian distribution for wall-normal incident particle velocities. Lagrangian calculations in which the particle-wall collisions are treated following Sommerfeld [1], are carried out. Low and high roughness cases are simulated and both simulations results are compared with Sommerfeld experimental database.

Abstract:
The properties of fibrinogen and fibrin, the levels of fibrincpeptide A (FPA) and fibrin(ogen) degradation products (FDP) were studied in 34 patients with AMI who were undergoing thrombolytic and heparin therapy. They were classified into 6 groups accordingto their stage of treatment: group 1, before intravenous administration of 800.000 U streptokinase over 30 min; group 2, after a<Mnistraticn of SK but before adninistraticn of heparin; group 3, during 24 h ofthe 5 ng/h heparin continuous infusion; group 4, during 48-72 h of the 16.6 ng/h heparin continuous infhsion; group 5, after 1 week of administration of SK and with a bolus inyection of 50 rg heparin every 4 h; group 6, patients who were undergoing only heparin treatment. The Fg 1/ Fg II ratio varies during treatment with SK and heparin. In group 1 a sligjnt increase (2.5) is observed. Group 2 shows a significantdecrease (0.6) as a result of fibrinolysis. In group3 the ratio reaches normal value (1.8) while in the fourth group it is twice the normal value (4). The value for group 5 is nearly normal (2.1), and in group 6 it reaches values similar to those obtained in group 4, which implies that the rise in the Fgl/Fgll ratio is not a result of fibrinolytic treatment. TheFPA level shows and increase in patients with AMI (group 1,126 ng/ml). When SK treatment is applied (group 2), FPA decreases to 52 ng/ml. Later treatment with heparin (group-3, 82; group-4, 44 and group-5, 81ng/ml) does not neutralize thrcmbinic activity. Patients treated only with heparin (group 6) show an FPAvalue of 19 ng/ml, which is lower than in the other groups. All of this indicates that thrombin is activated after fibrinolytic treatment. FDP values show asignificant increase in the six groups (1, 53; 2, 430; 3, 128; 4, 270; 5, 139 and 6, 141 ug/ml), which indicates that during treatment with heparin the fibrinolytic activity persists. he formation of highly cross-linked fibrin is altered in groups 1,2,3 and 4,as a consequence of circulating FDP effect and fibrincgeno- lysis. The permeability of the fibrin clotdecreases in groups 1 (0.42), 2 (1.3), 4 (1.1) and 5(0.5 ml/s/ng) and increases in group 2 (23.2 ml/s/nig) with respect to the normal plasma value (3.2 ml/s/nrg). The decrease in permeability must be related to the existence of hypercoagulability resistant to heparinization. FPA values, tine Fgl/Fgll ratio, andfibrin permeability can be used to evaluate the degree of thrcmbin activity during thrombolytic treatmentinAMI.

Abstract:
After reading the final report of The First European Survey on Language Competences (ESLC 2011: 83), I thought it was challenging for me to write this paper, focusing on how translation can improve my students' language learning, in order to become aware of the EU terminology. On the one hand, in the Romanian educational system, both teachers' and students' frequent use of the target language (English) during lessons has positive impacts, in the sense that the more students and teachers speak the target language during lessons, the higher the score on the language testing. On the other hand, translation of texts containg EU terminology brings up two questions herein - Why becoming aware of E.U terminology? How do my students perceive the relation between translation and language learning in order to become aware of the EU terminology? I answered these questions by conducting an analysis, based on a two-fold approach: selecting texts from the Guide to Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisation (RIS3) and establishing a time frame for the students to translate the selected texts. My selection of texts from the above mentioned guide is justified: the students are enrolled in the Computer Science Program and being language learners/users, their communicative language competence and awareness of EU terminology are to be activated in the performance of the various language activities, involving reception, production, interaction or mediation (in particular, translating from English into Romanian). Nowadays, mediation plays an important role in Europe, because it provides the normal linguistic functioning at EU level and, by adopting it, learners/students are able to mediate, through translating activities, between speakers of the two languages concerned, who cannot overcome the communication barrier. Moreover, I emphasized in the paper the following: becoming aware of the EU terminology, students not only become plurilingual, more interculturally aware, but they also enhance their linguistic and cultural competences. To sum up, the analysis helped me draw a relevant conclusion: translations of texts containing EU terminology enrich the students'vocabulary, enhance their capacity for further language learning, as they already know and use terms from a specialised field (more precisely, they can cope with learning a language for specific purposes - ESP) and lead to greater openness to new cultural experiences (see also the study Translation and language learning: The role of translation in the teaching of languages in the European Union 1/2013: 27).

Abstract:
The poultry industry has advanced remarkably over the past 30 years. In particular, broiler production has been the most successful than any other sector in the animal industry. Production standards of broilers have continuously improved over this period, with modern broilers reaching a live average weight of 2.5 kg at 33 – 35 days. Today, under normal conditions, a broiler chicken can gain an average weight of 65 g per day and can attain 1.5 feed conversion ratio (FCR). Genetic selection brought about by breeding companies has played a big part in the improvements of broiler growth, and advances in nutritional management have provided about 10 to 15% of these changes. In conclusion, future broiler nutrition studies are going to be continued on the plane of economic criteria, determination of alternative feedstuffs and their cultivation, production of new feed additives, sustainability, and food or product quality. However, broiler nutrition studies are expected to contain not only pure and applied nutrition but also to answer and to enlighten some discussed issues such as to support animal welfare, consumer health, and ecological equilibrium. In this review, the latest improvements in feed formulation with much attention on metabolizable energy (ME) and crude protein (CP), feeding systems and feed presentation, use of feed additives to enhance feed use and broiler performance are discussed.

Abstract:
As a student undertaking a Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (LIC)1 based in a GP practice in a rural community in the North of Scotland, I have been lucky to be given responsibility and my own clinic lists. Every day I conduct consultations that change my practice: the challenge of clinically applying the theory I have studied, controlling a consultation and efficiently exploring a patient's problems, empathising with and empowering them to play a part in their own care2 – and most difficult I feel – dealing with the vast amount of uncertainty that medicine, and particularly primary care, presents to both clinician and patient. I initially consulted with a lady in her 60s who attended with her husband, complaining of severe lower back pain who was very difficult to assess due to her pain level. Her husband was understandably concerned about the degree of pain she was in. After assessment and discussion with one of the GPs, we agreed some pain relief and a physio assessment in the next few days would be a practical plan. The patient had one red flag, some leg weakness and numbness, which was her ‘normal’ on account of her multiple sclerosis. At the physio assessment a few days later, the physio felt things were worse and some urgent bloods were ordered, unfortunately finding raised cancer and inflammatory markers. A CT scan of the lung found widespread cancer, a later CT of the head after some developing some acute confusion found brain metastases, and a week and a half after presenting to me, the patient sadly died in hospital. While that was all impactful enough on me, it was the follow-up appointment with the husband who attended on the last triage slot of the evening two weeks later that I found completely altered my understanding of grief and the mourning of a loved one. The husband had asked to speak to a Andrew MacFarlane Year 3 ScotGEM Medical Student 2 doctor just to talk about what had happened to his wife. The GP decided that it would be better if he came into the practice - strictly he probably should have been consulted with over the phone due to coronavirus restrictions - but he was asked what he would prefer and he opted to come in. I sat in on the consultation, I had been helping with any examinations the triage doctor needed and I recognised that this was the husband of the lady I had seen a few weeks earlier. He came in and sat down, head lowered, hands fiddling with the zip on his jacket, trying to find what to say. The GP sat, turned so that they were opposite each other with no desk between them - I was seated off to the side, an onlooker, but acknowledged by the patient with a kind nod when he entered the room. The GP asked gently, “How are you doing?” and roughly 30 seconds passed (a long time in a conversation) before the patient spoke. “I just really miss her…” he whispered with great effort, “I don’t understand how this all happened.” Over the next 45 minutes, he spoke about his wife, how much pain she had been in, the rapid deterioration he witnessed, the cancer being found, and cruelly how she had passed away after he had gone home to get some rest after being by her bedside all day in the hospital. He talked about how they had met, how much he missed her, how empty the house felt without her, and asking himself and us how he was meant to move forward with his life. He had a lot of questions for us, and for himself. Had we missed anything – had he missed anything? The GP really just listened for almost the whole consultation, speaking to him gently, reassuring him that this wasn’t his or anyone’s fault. She stated that this was an awful time for him and that what he was feeling was entirely normal and something we will all universally go through. She emphasised that while it wasn’t helpful at the moment, that things would get better over time.3 He was really glad I was there – having shared a consultation with his wife and I – he thanked me emphatically even though I felt like I hadn’t really helped at all. After some tears, frequent moments of silence and a lot of questions, he left having gotten a lot off his chest. “You just have to listen to people, be there for them as they go through things, and answer their questions as best you can” urged my GP as we discussed the case when the patient left. Almost all family caregivers contact their GP with regards to grief and this consultation really made me realise how important an aspect of my practice it will be in the future.4 It has also made me reflect on the emphasis on undergraduate teaching around ‘breaking bad news’ to patients, but nothing taught about when patients are in the process of grieving further down the line.5 The skill Andrew MacFarlane Year 3 ScotGEM Medical Student 3 required to manage a grieving patient is not one limited to general practice. Patients may grieve the loss of function from acute trauma through to chronic illness in all specialties of medicine - in addition to ‘traditional’ grief from loss of family or friends.6 There wasn’t anything ‘medical’ in the consultation, but I came away from it with a real sense of purpose as to why this career is such a privilege. We look after patients so they can spend as much quality time as they are given with their loved ones, and their loved ones are the ones we care for after they are gone. We as doctors are the constant, and we have to meet patients with compassion at their most difficult times – because it is as much a part of the job as the knowledge and the science – and it is the part of us that patients will remember long after they leave our clinic room.
