Abstract:
This paper deals with cutting ability of progressive Norton Quantum grinding wheel during grinding roll bearing steel 100Cr6 of hardness 61 HRC. Cutting ability of this wheel is compared with conventional grinding wheel and based on measurement of grinding forces as well as surface roughness. Results of experiments show that Norton Quantum grinding wheels are capable of long term grinding cycles at high removal rates without unacceptable occurrence of grinding chatter and surface burn whereas application of conventional wheel can produce excessive vibration and remarkable temper colouring of ground surface. Moreover, while Norton Quantum grinding wheel gives nearly constant grinding forces and surface roughness within ground length at higher removal rates, conventional grinding wheel (as that reported in this study) does not.

Abstract:
The creep experiments are performed under the various stresses at 595°C, 610°C, 640°C and 670°C for P92 steel which broadly used in USC plant pipeline. The specimens are taken from the extrados part of a new manufactured main steam elbow. A series of integrated creep curves are obtained, and the maximal test time last over 13000h. The relationship between the minimum creep rate and stress at different temperatures is explained by Norton formula. Both the 105 h creep rupture strength and stress of 1% creep strain in 105h of P92 steel at the four above temperatures are extrapolated with a list by using the Monkman-Grant formula, which are consistent with the reference experiment data at 600°C and 650°C. Meanwhile, damage during the creep process is discussed applying Norton creep damage formula and θ function method.

Hornborg, Emmely. "Glorious : Hur långt ifrån normen kan en musikvideo inom hiphopgenren avvika?" Thesis, Högskolan i Gävle, Media- och kommunikationsvetenskap, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hig:diva-34203.

Full text
Abstract:
What are the expectations for a music video in the American hip hop genre? Many people think that a music video should include guns, spontaneous dance, fast cars and unclothed young woman. Exactly those features contain the normative music video during the time period of January 1 – September 30, 2017. The purpose of this study is analysing how far from that norm a popular hip-hop artist can deviate?               The study is divided into two parts. The quantitative section contains 66 music videos of 54 African American men, five African American women, five white men, one white woman and one Asian man. Based on a quantitative analysis that among other things looks at the environment the music video plays out in, what the artists do and what camera angles the artists are shot in, the normative music video is created during the time period. Three of them were selected on the basis that they most went from the norm and constitute the qualitative analysis parts. The music video for "Glorious" by Macklemore is about his 100-year-old grandmother. In "1-800-273-8255" by Logic is the protagonist a young African American boy who discovers that he is gay. The last music video is "I'm Better" by Missy Elliot which features well done choreography and fast camera clips. This is also the music video that contains the most elements of hip-hop culture.               The theories used in the study are the sociological concept of intersectionality and Erving Goffman's framing theory. The method of qualitative analysis is based on misé-en-scène originating in film science.               The results show that in a genre where the rappers want to appear strong and respectful, the music videos for both Macklemore's "Glorious" and Logic's "1-800-273-8255" show a strong love for a weak and vulnerable person. Depicting an older woman in a middle-class background and a young gay teenage boy is daring in this genre. This study can show that not all music videos in hip hop are homogeneous based on expectations.

BAGGRUND: Antibiotikaresistens udgørentrussel mod folkesundheden. Antibiotikabruger hoveddrivekraften bag resistensudviklingen.
BACKGROUND:Drug resistance resulting from the overuse of antibiotics poses a threat to public health. Consequently, antibiotics must be used more cautiously.Intestinal flora is important to health and antibiotics can disrupt intestinal flora. Salutogenic theory is a well-established concept in public health. Sense of coherence (SOC), which is a key concept insalutogenic theory, reflects a person ́s lifeviewand capacity to respond to stressful situations, includes three components: comprehensibility, manageability and meaningfulness. SOC is a valuable tool for problems that target “compliant” behavior. Lack of SOC in both physicians and the general public may contribute to poor compliance to current guidelines that recommend restricting the use of antibiotics. AIM: The study aimed to formulate proposals for promoting the prudent use of antibiotics by optimizing SOCbased on literature that illustrates(i) the attitudes of the general public and doctors regarding antibiotics and antibiotic resistance in Scandinavia and (ii) the influence and possible health consequences of antibiotics on intestinal flora. It is discussed whether there are reasons for looking at antibiotics in a different way, which factors that facilitate or hinder prudent antibiotic use and how SOC could be optimized. METHODS: A literature study aftera structured search of the PubMed and Psych INFOdatabases. RESULTS: Although antibiotics are generally considered protective, their effect on intestinal flora may have adverse health consequences. Knowledge, habits and communication affect how antibiotics are used and whether prudent antibiotic use is experienced comprehensible and manageable. Doctors may experience conflict when prescribing antibiotics between treating the patient in the best possible manner and the need to limit such treatment to protect the community from increased resistance to antibiotics. Doctors ́wish to guarantee that their patients receive the best possible treatment might be one reason why they do not adhere to guidelines that recommend more restrictive use of antibiotics. Doctors do not consider the cautious use of antibiotics as meaningful. CONCLUSION: Careful antibiotic use could be promoted by using the influence of antibiotics on intestinal flora as motivational strategy;promoting effective communication and supporting appropriate and unlearn undesirable habits related to antibiotic use. A possible approach would be teaming physicians with a microbiologist for a day

Talluri, Sai Raghu. "Towards Designing Energy Efficient Symmetric Key Protocols." UNF Digital Commons, 2018. https://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/853.

Full text
Abstract:
Energy consumption by various modern symmetric key encryption protocols (DES, 3-DES, AES and, Blowfish) is studied from an algorithmic perspective. The work is directed towards redesigning or modifying the underlying algorithms for these protocols to make them consume less energy than they currently do. This research takes the approach of reducing energy consumption by parallelizing the consecutive memory accesses of symmetric key encryption algorithms. To achieve parallelization, an existing energy complexity model is applied to symmetric key encryption algorithms. Inspired by the popular DDR3 architecture, the model assumes that main memory is divided into multiple banks, each of which can store multiple blocks. Each block in a bank can only be accessed from a cache of its own, that can hold exactly one block. However all the caches from different banks can be accessed simultaneously. In this research, experiments are conducted to measure the difference in energy consumption by varying the level of parallelization, i.e. variations of, number of banks that can be accessed in parallel. The experimental results show that the higher the level of parallelism, smaller is the energy consumption.

Abstract:
This study analyzed the revolutions in Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya (North Africa) beginning in late 2010. The first part of the study focused on variables that the North African revolutions shared. These variables were “personalistic-style of dictatorship”, “sizable percentage of youth in population”, and “economic context”. These factors were then discussed as major descriptive variables that caused the revolutionary events in North Africa. The second part of the study assessed why each North African revolution resulted in varying levels of violence. Concluding thoughts were made regarding the similarities and differences between the 2009 Iranian Green Revolution, events in other North African Arab-majority states such as Algeria and Morocco, and the on-going Syrian Revolution to the North African Revolutions

Vosoughi, Mona. "Organizational Development Consulting: A Study of Expert Consultants' Key Strategies." UNF Digital Commons, 2014. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/550.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study was conducted to capture the collective voice of expert organizational development consultants. Until now, very few studies have been conducted that take into account the collective voices of organizational development consultants. More specifically, the purpose of the present study is to explore and gain a deeper understanding of the approaches expert organizational development consultants use throughout their engagement with their clients in an attempt to add value to and enhance organizational capacity. To understand the process used by this distinct group of leaders, phenomenological qualitative inquiry was the methodology used to conduct this study. Data were collected through in-depth, face-to-face interviews with seven practicing expert consultants in the Jacksonville, Florida area. Seven themes emerged through careful analysis of the data, supported with relevant concepts from the professional literature. The study has meaningful implications for the study of organization development consulting. It concludes with recommendations for consultants and researchers in the field of organizational development and change.

Charapko, Aleksey. "Time Series Similarity Search in Distributed Key-Value Data Stores Using R-Trees." UNF Digital Commons, 2015. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/565.

Full text
Abstract:
Time series data are sequences of data points collected at certain time intervals. The advance in mobile and sensor technologies has led to rapid growth in the available amount of time series data. The ability to search large time series data sets can be extremely useful in many applications. In healthcare, a system monitoring vital signals can perform a search against the past data and identify possible health threatening conditions. In engineering, a system can analyze performances of complicated equipment and identify possible failure situations or needs of maintenance based on historical data. Existing search methods for time series data are limited in many ways. Systems utilizing memory-bound or disk-bound indexes are restricted by the resources of a single machine or hard drive. Systems that do not use indexes must search through the entire database whenever a search is requested. The proposed system uses multidimensional index in the distributed storage environment to break the bound of one physical machine and allow for high data scalability. Utilizing an index allows the system to locate the patterns similar to the query without having to examine the entire dataset, which can significantly reduce the amount of computing resources required. The system uses an Apache HBase distributed key-value database to store the index and time series data across a cluster of machines. Evaluations were conducted to examine the system’s performance using synthesized data up to 30 million data points. The evaluation results showed that, despite some drawbacks inherited from an R-tree data structure, the system can efficiently search and retrieve patterns in large time series datasets.

Riley, Brad. Scaling up: Renewable energy on Aboriginal lands in north west Australia. Nulungu Research Institute, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.32613/nrp/2021.6.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper examines renewable energy developments on Aboriginal lands in North-West Western Australia at three scales. It first examines the literature developing in relation to large scale renewable energy projects and the Native Title Act (1993)Cwlth. It then looks to the history of small community scale standalone systems. Finally, it examines locally adapted approaches to benefit sharing in remote utility owned networks. In doing so this paper foregrounds the importance of Aboriginal agency. It identifies Aboriginal decision making and economic inclusion as being key to policy and project development in the 'scaling up' of a transition to renewable energy resources in the North-West.

Aldendifer, Elise, McKenzie Coe, Taylor Faught, Ian Klein, Peter Kuylen, Keeli Lane, Robert Loughran, et al. The Safe and Efficient Development of Offshore Transboundary Hydrocarbons: Best Practices from the North Sea and Their Application to the Gulf of Mexico. Edited by Gabriel Eckstein. Texas A&M University School of Law Program in Energy, Environmental, & Natural Resource Systems, September 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.37419/eenrs.offshoretransboundaryhydrocarbons.

Full text
Abstract:
Offshore hydrocarbon resources have been developed for many decades, and with technology improvements, many fields which were once impossible to develop, are now economically and technologically feasible. This has led to a growing difficulty in determining the legislative and regulatory framework for resources that straddle the recognized borders between two states. In this paper, we examine a successful framework agreement governing the transboundary resources between the United Kingdom (“U.K.”) and Norway in the North Sea, and the agreement between the United States and Mexico governing the Gulf of Mexico. Following the 2013 Energy Reform, the Mexican energy sector has been revitalized, leading to greater exploration, development, and production than ever before. This means that in the near future transboundary resources may be licensed for production, bringing the issues highlighted in this paper to the attention of multiple government and international entities. This paper seeks to recommend improvements to the transboundary framework in the Gulf of Mexico based on the successful framework agreement utilized in the North Sea. This paper begins by introducing international law for offshore resources in Part II. Part III discusses the offshore regulatory regimes in the U.K. and Norway, analyzing how the two states have successfully used bilateral agreements to facilitate cooperation regarding effective exploitation and apportionment of costs from cross-boundary offshore oil and gas projects in the North Sea. Part IV discusses the offshore regulatory regimes in the United States and Mexico and analyzes the current transboundary agreement in place for the Gulf of Mexico. Part V compares the transboundary agreement governing the North Sea and the same governing the Gulf of Mexico. We highlight the major differences in the agreements and suggest changes to the Gulf of Mexico agreement based on the successful North Sea agreement. Finally, this paper concludes and provides key policy recommendations to improve the rules and regulations surrounding the exploitation of transboundary hydrocarbons in the Gulf of Mexico.

Abstract:
In July 2019, participants gathered in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, for an event organized by RTI International called Trust in Science. Our goal with the Trust in Science event was to foster collaborations and strengthen connections between nonprofit and funding organizations to address trust-related challenges that are affecting science and scientists. Collaboration between professionals and organizations is easy to cite as an abstract goal but can be challenging to pursue in practice for various reasons. Participants generated and considered both broad challenges and specific contexts in which trust has been strained. We discussed, for example, the use of wearable technologies for data collection, vaccine acceptance, biofuel research, survey research on topics such as sexual harassment monitoring, tools to help people navigate online information, and the development of physical spaces for local community discussion about science and technology. We offer an overview of key themes and ideas that emerged from our interactions. We hope that readers will consider this an open-source set of suggestions for future initiatives and innovations.

DiGrande, Laura, Sue Pedrazzani, Elizabeth Kinyara, Melanie Hymes, Shawn Karns, Donna Rhodes, and Alanna Moshfegh. Field Interviewer– Administered Dietary Recalls in Participants’ Homes: A Feasibility Study Using the US Department of Agriculture’s Automated Multiple-Pass Method. RTI Press, May 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.3768/rtipress.2021.mr.0045.2105.

Full text
Abstract:
Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of administering the Automated Multiple-Pass Method (AMPM), a widely used tool for collecting 24-hour dietary recalls, in participants’ homes by field interviewers. Design: The design included computer-assisted personal interviews led by either a nutritionist (standard) or field interviewer. Portion estimators tested were a set of three-dimensional food models (standard), a two-dimensional food model booklet, or a tablet with digital images rendered via augmented reality. Setting: Residences in central North Carolina. Participants: English-speaking adults. Pregnant women and individuals who were fasting were excluded. Results: Among 133 interviews, most took place in living rooms (52%) or kitchens (22%). Mean interview time was 40 minutes (range 13–90), with no difference by interviewer type or portion estimator, although timing for nutritionist-led interviews declined significantly over the study period. Forty-five percent of participants referenced items from their homes to facilitate recall and portion estimation. Data entry and post-interview coding was evaluated and determined to be consistent with requirements for the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Values for the number of food items consumed, food groups, energy intake (average of 3,011 kcal for men and 2,105 kcal for women), and key nutrients were determined to be plausible and within reasonably expected ranges regardless of interviewer type or portion estimator used. Conclusions: AMPM dietary recall interviews conducted in the home are feasible and may be preferable to clinical administration because of comfort and the opportunity for participants to access home items for recall. AMPMs administered by field interviewers using the food model booklet produced credible nutrition data that was comparable to AMPMs administered by nutritionists. Training field interviewers in dietary recall and conducting home interviews may be sensible choices for nutrition studies when response rates and cost are concerns.

Brophy, Kenny, and Alison Sheridan, eds. Neolithic Scotland: ScARF Panel Report. Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, June 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.9750/scarf.06.2012.196.

Full text
Abstract:
The main recommendations of the Panel report can be summarised as follows: The Overall Picture: more needs to be understood about the process of acculturation of indigenous communities; about the Atlantic, Breton strand of Neolithisation; about the ‘how and why’ of the spread of Grooved Ware use and its associated practices and traditions; and about reactions to Continental Beaker novelties which appeared from the 25th century. The Detailed Picture: Our understanding of developments in different parts of Scotland is very uneven, with Shetland and the north-west mainland being in particular need of targeted research. Also, here and elsewhere in Scotland, the chronology of developments needs to be clarified, especially as regards developments in the Hebrides. Lifeways and Lifestyles: Research needs to be directed towards filling the substantial gaps in our understanding of: i) subsistence strategies; ii) landscape use (including issues of population size and distribution); iii) environmental change and its consequences – and in particular issues of sea level rise, peat formation and woodland regeneration; and iv) the nature and organisation of the places where people lived; and to track changes over time in all of these. Material Culture and Use of Resources: In addition to fine-tuning our characterisation of material culture and resource use (and its changes over the course of the Neolithic), we need to apply a wider range of analytical approaches in order to discover more about manufacture and use. Some basic questions still need to be addressed (e.g. the chronology of felsite use in Shetland; what kind of pottery was in use, c 3000–2500, in areas where Grooved Ware was not used, etc.) and are outlined in the relevant section of the document. Our knowledge of organic artefacts is very limited, so research in waterlogged contexts is desirable. Identity, Society, Belief Systems: Basic questions about the organisation of society need to be addressed: are we dealing with communities that started out as egalitarian, but (in some regions) became socially differentiated? Can we identify acculturated indigenous people? How much mobility, and what kind of mobility, was there at different times during the Neolithic? And our chronology of certain monument types and key sites (including the Ring of Brodgar, despite its recent excavation) requires to be clarified, especially since we now know that certain types of monument (including Clava cairns) were not built during the Neolithic. The way in which certain types of site (e.g. large palisaded enclosures) were used remains to be clarified. Research and methodological issues: There is still much ignorance of the results of past and current research, so more effective means of dissemination are required. Basic inventory information (e.g. the Scottish Human Remains Database) needs to be compiled, and Canmore and museum database information needs to be updated and expanded – and, where not already available online, placed online, preferably with a Scottish Neolithic e-hub that directs the enquirer to all the available sources of information. The Historic Scotland on-line radiocarbon date inventory needs to be resurrected and kept up to date. Under-used resources, including the rich aerial photography archive in the NMRS, need to have their potential fully exploited. Multi-disciplinary, collaborative research (and the application of GIS modelling to spatial data in order to process the results) is vital if we are to escape from the current ‘silo’ approach and address key research questions from a range of perspectives; and awareness of relevant research outside Scotland is essential if we are to avoid reinventing the wheel. Our perspective needs to encompass multi-scale approaches, so that ScARF Neolithic Panel Report iv developments within Scotland can be understood at a local, regional and wider level. Most importantly, the right questions need to be framed, and the right research strategies need to be developed, in order to extract the maximum amount of information about the Scottish Neolithic.
