Abstract:
Samples were collected during summer 2014, at three locations: along 15th St. SW near agricultural test plots, along an access road leading to a newly built oil drilling pad, and adjacent to the pad. MiniVol? TAS Samplers (Air metrics, Springfield, OR) were used for sampling. Total Suspended Particles (TSP), and particulates less than 10 or 5 microns (PM10 and PM2.5, respectively) were collected using quartz fiber filters. Samples were collected both pre and post access road and pad construction. The mass concentration of TSP at 15th St. ranged from 365 - 911 ?g/m3 (mean 507 ?g/m3). Concentrations at the access road ranged from 8 ? 68 ?g/m3 and near the pad from 9 ? 42 ?g/m3. SEM/EDS analyses show most particulates are silicate or carbonate mineral fragments or biogenetic particles. The most common particle size is between 2.5?m and 10?m. The main sources of airborne particulate matter observed were from road dust re-suspension, and biological sources.

Abstract:
The line of road originally intended to link Sydney with the booming settlements of the Hunter Valley underwent a ten year survey and construction period, beginning in 1825 with Heneage Finch's hastily selected, winding line, and ending in 1836 with two small road gangs caught in a continuous cycle of construction and decay. In the interim period, however, the road had aroused the enthusiasm of the best surveyors and engineers available in the colony. These men envisioned a fine, all-encompassing, permanent thoroughfare - a most appropriate goal in view of the contemporary optimism with regard to the colony's future. The structures and formations were impressive and etensive and built as far as possible according to the latest principles emerging from the road building revolution in Britain. The methods were, of necessity, simplified in response to the colonial conditions of rugged terrain, vast distances and the large but unskilled and, for the main part, unwilling convict labour force. The results were highly successful, as is stille vident today, and never failed to impress early travellers and reassure them that they were, after all, in a 'civilised' country. The road never actually fulfilled its builders' plans. A steamboat service established between Sydney and the Hunter Valley robbed it of its role as a vital link, and other more hospitable or more direct routes were discovered and used by what traffic did proceed on land. After the few remaining gangs were finally withdrawn, seciton after section quickly fell into disuse and abandonment. Both the grand and modest structures and formations were left neglected, and thus preserved, to the present day.

This thesis examines institutional enlargement for both the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union (EU). Both organizations added new members to their ranks during the Cold War and in the post-Cold War era. During the Cold War, NATO and the European Community (EC) had informal membership criteria, but once the Cold War ended, the two institutions implemented explicit membership requirements. The research question centers on whether both institutions admitted new members that did not satisfy some of the membership criteria. I find that the two organizations both admitted new states that only partially complied with the criteria. In this thesis, I analyze why NATO and the EU added new member states even when these states' membership applications were incomplete

Abstract:
The novel The Road (2006) represents a detour in the writings of American novelist Cormac McCarthy. Its concise prose and apocalyptic setting signalize a departure both from his early novels (which are closer to the Southern Gothic) than his latest ones (Westerns). By following a Father and Sons journey through a devastated country, the author makes a commentary on contemporary United States of the post-9/11, and the rise of the neocons and the strengthening of neoliberalism. In order to investigate how the book figures the present, this master thesis highlights elements of our time that materialize in the narrative. Thereunto, it starts locating McCarthys work in the contemporary American literature, and The Roads role in his bibliography, culminating in the analysis of the focalization in this novel, and what it represents. Afterwards, the axis of the this work turns to the 9/11 literary production, and once again how the novel stands out in this group opposing The Road to another contemporary book: Don DeLillos Falling Man. Lastly, the formal analysis of the narrative will investigate the apocalypse and the dialectic established between it and dystopia, which are the two forces dueling in the book. Thus, by articulating this movement we investigate the role of the characters, setting and time. As Fredric Jameson theorizes, we live in the age of Late Capitalism, also known as Post-Modernity, and this appears throughout the novel, as we will demonstrate in the present work. The main theoretical foundation of this thesis is, again, given by Jameson in his The Political Unconscious, in addition to concepts formulated by Tom Moylan on utopia/dystopia, and Frank Kermonde on apocalypse, among others.

Amukwelele, Laimi Naango. "Rural road infrastructure as a facilitating channel towards rural development : community views and perceptions on the Kamanjab-Omakange-Okahao road project in North-Western Namibia." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/95652.

Abstract:
Thesis (MDF)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.
Rural development in most of the developing countries, Namibia included, entails making sure that every area is accessible in terms of road networks and telecommunications. Such infrastructure avoids the alienation of some areas or segregation and marginalisation of these same areas. Just as in many other African countries, a large portion of the Namibian population is located in the rural areas, yet development has not as of yet cascaded downstream to reach them. This research explores how rural road infrastructure development and facelift can transform the economic development of the rural folk. Most entrepreneurs in rural areas struggle to grow as they have challenges connecting to the markets, due to poor road infrastructure. The rural people in Tsandi and Opuwo constituencies in north-western Namibia desire to be easily connected to activity centres like schools, hospitals, etc. However, accessibility, especially during the rainy season, is a problem. The researcher used a quantitative data analysis method on data collected from rural residents and rural entrepreneurs via questionnaires, interviews and observation methods. These methods were combined in order to come up with a more reliable conclusion from the randomly selected sample, representing the population of the two constituencies in the north-western Namibia. Rural communities are prevented from accessing a number of resources because of poor road networks. For example, it is common that the rural residents get stale news with expiration dates ranging from one month up until three to four months. This report shall propagate various ways that can be employed to improve road infrastructure in the rural areas as well as unveil the benefits of such development to overall rural economic challenges. A large amount of literature was considered for review on this topic as well as field research in order to understand the findings on the topic and to come up with a sound conclusion containing worthwhile recommendations. It was observed that rural road infrastructure development plays a pivotal role in rural socio-economic development, which is usually measured by the Rural Access Index (RAI). As the road infrastructure improves, so too will the standard of living for rural people because they will have the convenience and ease of road travel to be able to access to hospitals, schools and other activity centres. In order to effectively unlock the full potential of rural road infrastructure and transport corridors, a new perspective for road infrastructure is required that takes into account lessons learnt and changes to the external environment.

Tucker, Andrew. "Transport governance and the environment : the changing decision making context of road transport in north east England." Thesis, Durham University, 2004. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/2971/.

Full text
Abstract:
The environmental problems originating from transport are considerable, persistent and increasing. In personal travel there is a continuing switch away from public transport towards the private car. Also the proportion of freight moving by road is increasing in volume and distance. These trends reveal that the transport of both people and goods is less sustainable than it was. Altering existing transport behaviour to reduce demand, simultaneously shaping suppressed demand, and achieving both whilst maintaining politically acceptable levels of access and mobility are serious challenges. This thesis explores a part of the complex landscape of transport decision making where theses tensions are enacted, focussing on three key group of organisations within the road transport sector of the north east of England. The thesis assess the salience of ‘the environment’ within the minds of organisational transport decision makers in the North East. Their views on the environment and its importance within their decisions will affect the success of policy initiatives. Examining transport choices within this context reveals the depth of ‘environmental’ understanding present within the operational landscape of transport. It is argued that theoretical and conceptual approaches to the process of transport policy development have matured, whilst the implementation of transport policy resulting from this process remains somewhat patchy with traditional approaches to transport provision remaining dominant. The argument is covered in terms of transport paradigms. Though sustainability policies remain, recent integrated transport initiatives are undermined from the centre by a return to the market paradigm and to ‘predict and provide’. Within this research clear evidence has emerged of reinterpretations of ‘the environment’ taking place, Theses discoveries illustrate the ability of governance and organisational actors to assimilate emerging policy requirements into existing or preferred programmes and transport behaviours, in support of the aims of recent transport policies the ability to identify economic and environmental ‘win-win’ opportunities was found to be important. Decisive leadership was found to deliver effective transport policies.

Abstract:
The research examined the individual and collective influence of ‘Indigenous status’ and ‘remoteness’ on road crash profiles. Interviews with 229 crash patients recruited through health facilities in North Queensland showed that involvement of unsafe behaviours in crashes increased with remoteness, and were more marked among Indigenous patients (proximal causation). Themes identified as influencing behaviour included social acceptance of risk (‘rural way of life’), bravado among young males and feelings of hopelessness among the Indigenous sample (distal causation). Using this knowledge, recommendations are provided under the ‘Safe System’ framework with a particular focus on improving Indigenous program development and delivery.

Creuzer, Jessica Christine. "Estimating the Impact to Wetlands in Western North Dakota From Dust and Road Use Increases Due to Energy Development." Thesis, North Dakota State University, 2016. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/28242.

Full text
Abstract:
Travel on gravel roads in western North Dakota has increased in recent years due mainly to energy development and little information exists on the impacts. This project?s objective was to compare high dust impact sites and low dust impact sites to determine the effects of road dust on wetlands. Four aspects were evaluated: 1) dust loading; 2) wetland condition and function; 3) water quality; and 4) trace element changes in the soil. Dust loading was measured utilizing dust collectors. Wetlands were assessed for condition using the Index of Plant Community Integrity and North Dakota Rapid Assessment Method and function using the Hydrogeomorphic model. Monthly water quality measurements were taken and yearly soil samples. Results show greater dust loading in the high impact sites than low impact sites and spatially closer to the road. Information from this study can be used by future land managers of wetlands affected by dust.

Jackson, Jennifer L. "Perceptions of First-Generation College Students of Color: The Road Less Traveled." UNF Digital Commons, 2017. https://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/778.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to understand the perceptions of first-generation college students of color in a predominantly White institution (PWI) who successfully completed the first two years of college. This qualitative research utilized semi-structured interviews to understand the perceptions of first-generation college students of color and how they viewed their secondary and post-secondary experiences. The conceptual framework was supported through the literature by analyzing the intersectionality of historical factors, socioeconomic status, critical race theory, and educational programs. Although these students of color faced the anxieties, confusion, and difficulties that all college students encounter when they transition to college, their challenges are heightened when coupled with other factors such as lower levels of college readiness, living in high crime communities, a lack of financial resources, a lack of family support, and limited knowledge pertaining to postsecondary education (Brown, 2008; Pascarella, et al. 2003; Strayhorn, 2006). Such factors create unique challenges for first-generation students of color, resulting in disparate academic achievement (Strayhorn). Participants in this study were selected using a criterion-based selection process. This study aimed to give voice to 12 students who self-identified as first-generation students of color, were classified as juniors attending the University of North Florida, and who were a part of the Jacksonville Commitment program. The Jacksonville Commitment program was selected for further study because the program provided students with wrap-around services that supported first-generation students’ persistence and social and academic development. Eisner’s (1998) educational criticism was the primary data analysis approach used in this study, supported by Hatch’s (2002) typological and interpretive analysis. Typological analysis divided the overall data set into categories or typologies. The four typologies identified in this study were: family relationships, socioeconomic status, resilience, and college retention and persistence. Interpretive analysis was used to extrapolate meaning and attach significance to the data. Thematics was used it identify recurring messages within the data (Eisner, 1998; Patton, 2002). Data analysis of the present study led to the development of three themes: (a) Students perceived that they persisted in college as a result of being exposed to a rigorous K-12 curriculum; (b) Students perceived that they persisted in college due to their support network; (c) Previous academic experiences contributed to the development of student self-efficacy. Students in this study challenged the deficit model which suggests that students without resources will not achieve. Instead, they were more aligned with the asset model that connects student success with the positive attributes that they possessed. The major implication from this study is that first-generation students of color have a greater chance of academic success if provided focused supports and academic preparation in primary and secondary schools to prepare them for the collegiate culture.

Full text
Abstract:
Amber has been a recurring luxury around the Mediterranean Sea for thousands of years in various cultures. This study treats the first two centuries AD in the Roman Empire. The early centuries of the Empire saw a brief period of relative calm in which Baltic amber became a fashion in Rome. The purpose of this investigation is to explain how and why amber journeyed from the northern oceans of Germania into Rome, and how it expressed itself in the Empire. The Amber Road between the Baltic Sea and Rome is well trodden by modern researchers, but very little has been written about why amber arrived in various contexts. The questions are on the topics of the amber’s origin, how it was consumed and by whom. Throughout the study, the agency of amber is considered in order to approach the source material from a new angle. The first chapter investigates what effect the geographical origin and trade had on the agency of amber. The first part of the second chapter discusses amber in material culture as well as examples of amber items in ancient texts. The second part of the second chapter analyses perfume vessels made from amber. The last chapter is on the topic of amber as a luxury. The discussion and conclusion argues that rich women were major consumers of amber in Rome.

Abstract:
Accidents involving the transportation of dangerous goods occur infrequently, on highways and affect not only their users but also the bordering populations and the environment, causing contamination and pollution, often spread by winds and rivers, with catastrophic consequences for the environment and human health. It is therefore a problem that requires not just actions of a corrective nature on the occasion of claims, but also preventive measures aimed at reducing the risks and consequences of striking. This work aims to become an instrument for preventive actions directed to government as a contribution in the safe transport of dangerous goods, on the north coast (São Sebastião and Caraguatatuba). The methodological approach of this work was secondary research in database CETESB more specifically on instruments from the Risk Management and Fault Tree Analysis methodology, this methodology is an integral part of studies of EIA - Environmental Impact Assessment, applied to transport of dangerous goods. The search result is a plan for emergency care.

Roadside deals with themes of self-discovery, transcendence, and the search for camaraderie in modern America. Many of the stories take place on or adjacent to the road: that eternal path of transience and transformation. Whether metaphorically or literally on the "roadside," many of the characters contained within are marginalized in their own lives and communities. It is through their grasping and searching for greater meaning in their lives that they come to gain understanding of their places in the world.

Abstract:
Reclaimed roads on the Little Missouri National Grasslands of southwestern North Dakota have not returned to pre-disturbance conditions. Phospholipid fatty acid analysis was performed on soil samples collected from reclaimed roads and adjacent prairie to assess reclamation effects on the microbial community. Additionally, nutrient cycling capacity was measured by four enzyme assays. Ordination analysis of PLFA data identified a distance gradient indicating microbial communities of reclaimed roads were different from the prairie. Specifically, Gram-negative bacteria and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi are associated with roads; soil organic matter was associated with prairie sites. Soil enzyme activities associated with prairie sites indicate greater nutrient cycling. The soils of reclaimed roads have not accumulated sufficient organic matter to sustain both plant and microbial communities characteristic of the surrounding prairie.

This thesis will argue that angling was a complex cultural phenomenon that had developed into a respectable sport for women during the Early Modern period in Britain. This heterogeneous tradition was inherited by many Victorian women who found it to be a vehicle through which they could find access to nature and where they could respectably exercise a level of authority, autonomy, and agency within the confines of a patriarchal society. That some women were conscious of these opportunities and were deliberate in their use of angling to achieve their goals while others happened upon them in a more unassuming manner, underscores how angling also functioned as a canopy of camouflage within Victorian society. In other words, though it outwardly appeared as a simple recreational activity, angling possessed the ability to function as a meta-narrative for its adherents, where the larger experiences and intentions of women became subtly intertwined, if not hidden, within the actual activity itself.

Abstract:
This work is an interdisciplinary exploration of negotiations between the nations that make up Canada. It explores the disparity that remains between Aboriginals and non Aboriginals in Canadian North America at a systemic level. It will show that the postcolonial era is rampant with colonial doctrine and that these principles and policies maintain a dogmatic system that can not allow for the continued existence of Aboriginals as separate and distinct peoples. I will show my understanding and interpretation of an old Indigenous system and suggest ways in which aspects of this ancient system may be valuable in creating a coordination of world views that can allow for both factions to exist and prosper. I will specifically address how the differing world views that exist between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Canadians—and the inequality between these two groups of peoples—has been and remains infused in the negotiation process that these governments attempt to complete. The final aspect of this work will be a theatrical production piece that allows (in some small way) the traditional Indigenous approach to ‘law’ to be given equal weight as the Supreme Court in Delgamuukw suggests.

Abstract:
A traditional two dimensional (planar) statistical analysis was used to identify the clustering types of North Central Texas traffic fatalities occurring in 2001-2006. Over 3,700 crash locations clustered in ways that were unlike other researched regions. A two dimensional (x and y coordinates) space was manipulated to mimic a one dimensional network to identify the tightest clustering of fatalities in the nearly 400,000 crashes reported from state agencies from 2003-2006. The roadway design was found to significantly affect crash location. A one dimensional (linear) network analysis was then used to measure the statistically significant clustering of flow variables of after dark crashes and daylight crashes. Flow variables were determined to significantly affect crash location after dark. The linear and planar results were compared and the one dimensional, linear analysis was found to be more accurate because it did not over detect the clustering of events on a network.

Abstract:
This research is focused on the analysis and improvement proposals in the Pasamayo Variant (Lima), applying the Road Safety Inspection (ISV) methodology and the Highway Safety Manual (HSM) Predictive Method according to the new Safety Manual Road (2017). Where the application of road safety inspection includes the identification of the various areas where road safety is potentially poor due to various conditions and characteristics, according to a format that the manual itself, we provide and then statistical processes to determine the precise stretches of accident. Also the Manual of safety of the predictive method of the road (HSM), which involves the collection and processing of accidents originated and subscribed in the studied section in a period of approximately three years, the content, classification of vehicular traffic is also analyzed ( IMDA) and the lifting of geometric characteristics; with the objective of finding, in the first place: The prediction of the average frequency of expected accidents (Nesperado) with the current conditions of the site; Finally, the HSM is used to carry out a second prediction in which the road conditions have been changed with improvement proposals with the aim of reducing the percentage of expected accidents. The Road Safety Inspection Application and the Road Safety Manual, as it is called the identification of those areas where road safety has deficiencies and intervention is necessary in order to preserve the safety status of people. Finally, it should be mentioned that this research is a methodology that is not known in Peru, which should be implemented before, during and after the process of construction of a road in order to reduce the victims of traffic accidents.

Abstract:
This is a critical reading of On the Road, a novel by the North American writer Jack Kerouac, whose life and work represent the social dissatisfaction and the artistic manifestation of a generation of poets and novelists denominated, in the decades of 50 and 60, The Beat Generation, or The Beatniks. The work consists of an investigation to establish relationships among the triad author-narrator-protagonist in the proposed narrative. Supported by the theory of Walter Benjamin, the chosen theme contemplates the reflections of Benjamin about authorship, experience and modernity; but, above all, it privileges his conception of the flâneur; once the objective of the work is to show his movement and role in the literary corpus, as well as in the life of the Beatnik author. This thesis is divided in three parts. The first presents a brief historical comment on the situation of the United States in the postwar period, in order to contextualize and discuss the creation of the Beat Movement as an avantgardist manifestation. The second part introduces Kerouac and Benjamin, highlighting facts and important moments of their lives and work through the movements of the flâneur. The third moment analyzes On the Road in connection with Walter Benjamin's thoughts and in the extent of the tradition of Travel Literature, emphasizing the relevance of authorship. In the conclusion, I expect to legitimate the role of the flâneur in the narrative and socio-historical scope of that generation.

Abstract:
Western North Dakota, USA is experiencing particulate matter (PM) emissions, especially coarse (PM10) and fine (PM2.5), due to heavy traffic on unpaved roads from rapid oil development. Particulate matters may affect human and animal health, as well as soil quality. Thus, the purpose of this research was to quantify and characterize PM. Particulate matter samples were collected using miniVOL? portable air samplers in the pre-conditioned quartz filters which were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Electron Dispersive Spectrometry (EDS). The pooled average PM?10 concentrations varied between 30.84 ? 14.19 to 70.42 ? 38.37 ?g/m3 and PM2.5 concentrations varied between 14.08 ? 6.56 ?g/m3 to 19.60 ? 7.51 ?g/m3. SEM and EDS analysis revealed that most of the particulates were quartz (46%), followed by silicates (36%), biogenic particles (9%), etc. Soil analysis revealed that the average concentrations of most of the metals were below the reference level except mercury and lead.

Abstract:
This thesis has been written as a series of inter-related studies of the most important aspects of the construction and development of the turnpike road system in north-east Scotland. The first study is an examination of the general development and construction of the drove, parish, turnpike and military roads that traversed this part of Scotland. In the second study an examination is made of the development of road construction techniques, throughout the United Kingdom, that took place in the hundred years prior to the construction of turnpike roads in north-east Scotland. This study includes a detailed examination of the construction of Scotland's military roads, the work of Metcalf, Abercrombie, Hopkin and other early road engineers, and concludes with studies of McAdam's methods of road construction and of Telford's specifications for the Highland roads, the Glasgow-Carlisle road and the Holyhead road. In the third study an examination is made of the organisation and methods used to construct and maintain the turnpike roads constructed in north-east Scotland. Particular attention has been paid to the physical dimensions and construction of the carriageways, and the provision and formation of drains. This study includes an examination of the way that contracts for road and bridge construction were organised and let, and of the supervision of the construction processes provided by both the road overseers and the road trustees. The fourth study comprises a series of case studies describing the construction of six individual turnpike roads in Aberdeenshire, Banffshire and Kincardineshire. These roads were selected for study as they were affected by diverse geographical and financial influences. Because bridges were a necessary and integral part of the road system, the final study examines the problems, both financial and constructional, that befell turnpike trusts as a resut of either inheriting bridges constructed previously by other authorities of building major bridges themselves.

Abstract:
We analyzed soils in Alder Bald, Grassy Bald, and Rhododendron Bald communities on Roan Mountain to infer the influence of vegetation on soil and to help guide management strategies. In all vegetation types, soils were acid (pH = 4–5) sandy loams. We found vegetation-associated differences for organic content, cation exchange capacity, acidity, two plant macronutrients (K, Mg), and three cations (Fe, Na, Zn). We predicted that nitrogen compounds would be highest in the Alder Bald because Alnus viridis ssp. crispa (Green Alder) can harbor nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Organic content was highest at the alder-bald sites, ammonium was similar among vegetation types, and nitrate was high at only some sample sites. The unique soil properties of the Alder Bald community, its likely role in primary succession, and its documentation as a long-standing community type on Roan Mountain suggest that management should be directed towards its conservation.

Davies, Muriel. "Mulga (Acacia Aneura F. Muell. Ex Benth.) death adjacent to haul roads in the north-eastern Goldfields, Western Australia." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2010. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/1876.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the death of mulga (Acacia aneura) adjacent to a mine haul road in the north-eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. The death of trees along roadsides in the arid and semi-arid regions of Australia is often referred to as a ‘road shadow effect’ and is thought to occur because of sheetflow blockage. As sheetflow redistributes water across the land surface (rather than into channels) any impediment to flow is likely to have consequences for vegetation downslope of the impediment. The study was important as many mining companies in semi-arid Western Australia have reported tree deaths along their mine haul roadsides and the problem has also been identified across other areas of Western Australia including grazing land and road verges. The haul roads at many mines are watered to suppress dust and the water is often hypersaline. This study compared vegetation and soil parameters at sites up and downslope of both the haul (treated) and control roads to ascertain whether factors additional to sheetflow contributed to roadside tree deaths. At each site, a series of adjoining quadrats was established perpendicular to the road. The data collected at each site was analysed on a quadrat by quadrat basis to establish trends with increasing distance from the road edge. Where possible analysis techniques which could test for differences between control and treated sites or upslope and downslope sites and the interaction between sites were used as this would address the aims of the study. If data were normally distributed either two-way Analysis of Variance or t-tests were carried out and where data were not normally distributed the non-parametric Mann Whitney Utest was performed. The significant differences noted in several vegetation parameters between up and downslope sides of both the control and treated roads provided a good argument for road presence leading to road shadow effect. These differences included a greater proportion of dead and recently dead trees and a greater reduction in canopy fullness for living trees on the downslope sides of the roads. The presence of roads and the associated interruption in sheetflow water movement have contributed to the decline and eventually death of some mulga trees. However, the downslope side of the treated road often showed much greater differences for the parameters measured when compared with the control road. The results show that there was an interactive effect between salt water treatment and roadside and a strong to modest positive relationship between soil salt levels and tree health in close proximity to roadsides. At the haul road, the addition of hypersaline water as a dust suppressant exacerbated the decline and death of mulga trees downslope as well as having an influence on the trees upslope. Road location in the landscape strongly influences the type of interactions between roads and pathways of water movement. The roads monitored for this study mostly acted as a barrier to sheet water flow which resulted in a drought situation for mulga located on the downslope roadside and lead to their eventual decline or death. Road designs incorporating culverts or under road drainage systems are widely suggested for areas of mulga dependent on sheetflow however, their effectiveness requires further study. On occasion the haul road also acted as a source of water which had been contaminated with excess salts that accumulated during road watering for dust suppression. This resulted in an alteration of the surface soil salinity along the haul roadside and further exacerbated the effect of the altered hydrological regime. While dust suppression on mine haul roads is essential for a variety of reasons a product other than hypersaline water is highly recommended.

Abstract:
The purpose with this bachelor thesis is to explore how board of director diversity affects the firmfinancial performance for Swedish high growth firms listed in First North Growth Market. High growth firms stand for half of the work employment and production in high income countries and constitute therefore a significant role in society. During the current circumstances with the Covid-19 pandemic, the companies’ finances are affected and risk liquidation. A crucial factor for high growth firms to continue to grow and survive financial difficulties, is the composition of the board. Thereby this study’s focus is on diversity in the board and its effect on the firm financial performance in terms of ROA and Tobins Q for Swedish high growth firms. Furthermore, this study has implemented agent theory and The Upper Echelon Theory to create an understanding about the connection between the board’s composition, the firm financial performance and the decision-making process. The study is based on a quantitative research approach together with a positivist research philosophy, which makes it possible for the result to be generalized. The study’s data collection consists of 40 Swedish high growth firms listed in First North Growth Market. The result in this study shows that ROA was positively correlated with diversity in gender in the board. Further, the study’s results find no significant correlation between ethnicity, education and the firm financial performance.

Abstract:
This master's thesis explores the intersections of labor, socioeconomic class, and constructed American Indian masculinities in the literature of indigenous writers of the Great Plains published after the Native American Renaissance of the late 1960s. By engaging scholars and theorists from multiple disciplines--including Native labor historians such as Colleen O'Neill and Alexandra Harmon, (trans)indigenous studies scholars such as Chadwick Allen and Philip Deloria, and Native literary and cultural critics such as Gerald Vizenor and Louis Owens--this thesis offers an American Studies approach to definitions and expressions of work, wealth, and masculinity in American Indian literature of the Great Plains. With chapters on D'Arcy McNickle's posthumous Wind From an Enemy Sky (1978), Carter Revard's poetry and mixed-genre memoirs, and Thomas King's Truth and Bright Water (1999), this thesis emphasizes the roles of cross-cultural apprenticeships for young Native protagonists whose socioeconomic opportunities are often obstructed, threatened, or complicated by dams, roads, and bridges, both literal and metaphorical, as they seek ways to engage (or circumvent) the capitalist marketplace on their own terms. In highlighting each protagonist's relationship to blood (family and community), land, and memory, the chapters reveal how the respective Native authors challenge and reimagine stereotypes regarding Native workers and offer more complicated and nuanced discussions of Native "traditions" in modernity. Abstract:
The stretch of California Route One (Highway 1) from the City of San Luis Obispo reaching north to the Monterey County line is one of the most scenic drives in the United States. This stretch of highway is a destination in its own right; so much so, the San Luis Obispo North Coast Scenic Byway is federally designated as an All-American Road, the highest scenic designation of any road or highway in the nation. There has been a history for funding the preservation and enhancement of these roads; however, it was removed in 2012. Even with the lack of current funding opportunities, the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments (SLOCOG) continues to recognize the importance of the corridor in attracting valuable tourism revenue thus commissioning this update and economic analysis. Through the economic analysis it was found that visitor spending in the byway region increased by 23% from over $500 million in 2006 to almost $656 million in 2012. In 2012, visitor spending related associated with scenic recognition and enhancement projects along the corridor was about $217,000 in direct revenue. As a result of research, outreach, and data analysis, this project did find that being scenic does make “cents.”

We chose our paths by ourselves. For the past 394 years(1624-2018), the first ancient road “North Road”, was accompanied by the aboriginal, Dutch, Han, Japanese, in the footsteps of the constant follow-up. This road prints the development track of Taiwan and the essence of Taiwanese culture. The development and operation of the official “road” in Taiwan Island began with the construction of the Dutch "VOC" in order to expand business and authority. Taking the Chihkan Commercial Building as the core, it will develop northward toward “North Road”."North Road", from Fucheng to Zhuluo, develops for nearly 400 years. The rulers of the past use the “North Road” in order for the smooth travel and the expansion of territory. Therefore, “North Road” does meet the connotation and positioning of “Official Road” and has its historic value. This thesis reproduces and restarts the rich cultural heritage of “North Road”. It cannot be forgotten due to the development of railway by Japanese. It cannot be buried because of its decline. Furthermore, it should not be concealed by the “Longitudinal Line” completely. This research completely connects and presents the “North Road”, from Fucheng to Zhuluo, again. According to the discussion and analysis, the first ancient road of Taiwan “North Road─Yucheng to Zhuyu” was included in the cultural heritage, enhancing its cultural value, relaunching its deep cultural values, and seriously concerned again.
