Norman is a hulled two-row spring malting barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivar derived from the cultivar CDC Kendall that was widely grown in western Canada and utilized commercially by the malting and brewing industry. Developed in 2000 by in vitro selection using deoxynivalenol mycotoxin in the medium of an anther culture system, Norman was evaluated in the Western Cooperative Two-row Barley Registration Test in 2005 and 2006, and the malting and brewing industry Collaborative Malting Barley Trials in 2006 and 2007, before being registered in 2009. Norman was also evaluated extensively for deoxynivalenol concentration in fusarium head blight (Fusarium graminearum Schwabe) nurseries from 2001 to 2009. Norman accumulates 25 to 30% less deoxynivalenol than its parent cultivar, CDC Kendall, but is similar in all other traits including malting quality.

INTRODUCTIONG. O. Sars found the first specimens of Rhabdopleura in 1866. The specimens were found by dredging at 220 m at Skraaven in the Lofoten Islands. However, the first Rhabdopleura was described by Allman in 1869 (a, b, c) which he called Rhabdopleura normani in honour of A. M. Norman who together with J. G. Jefferys found them while dredging at 165 m off the Shetland Islands in 1868.

Abstract:

Objective: To compare frequency and intensity of endodontic pain with sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide and normal saline groups. Method:105 subjects were randomly allocated to 3 study arms. Group A (Sodium Hypochlorite), Group B (Hydrogen Peroxide) & Group C (Normal saline).Data regarding endodontic pain was recorded by asking the patient to mark on the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) according to the severity of pain on the proforma provided. Results:The minimum Intensity of pain was 0 and maximum was 10 with mean and standard deviation were 3.43 3.576 VAS. Endodontic pain was present in 12/35 (34.3%), 24/35 (68.6%), 30/35 (85%) patients of Group’s A, B, C respectively. Significant difference between groups with respect to Intensity of pain (VAS) was shown by one-way ANOVA. For Group A the Intensity of pain (VAS) was 82.38 4.34 and for Group B, C the Intensity of pain (VAS) were 4.37 3.456 and 6.11 3.197 respectively. Conclusions:Sodium Hypochlorite was much better than Hydrogen peroxide and normal saline in the management of endodontic pain in terms of incidence and intensity.

Abstract:

It is a curiosity of British cultural history that the surviving Anglo-Norman (AN) songs of medieval England have attracted so little interest amongst musicologists English or French. Such knowledge as we have of them is mostly garnered from two pioneering facsimile volumes: Early English Harmony, edited in 1897 for the Plainsong and Mediaeval Music Society by Harry E. Wooldridge; and Early Bodleian Music (1901), an even finer collection, edited by Sir John Stainer, his son and his daughter, with exemplary studies of many of the manuscripts by Bodley's Librarian, Edward B. Nicholson. These two volumes contain about half of the songs listed here. Their French equivalent, Pierre Aubry's Les plus anciens monuments de la musique française (1905), contains two AN songs in facsimile. Others were published at around the same time (‘buried’ might be a better word) in isolated facsimile: El tens d'iver (Baker), Quaunt le russinol (Petersen). Yet others have only recently emerged, or re-emerged, into scholarly consciousness: Volez oyer le castoy (Wilkins), Si tost c'amis (Page, 1988)

Abstract:

Abstract Roughly 50% of newly diagnosed breast cancer is stage 1, the majority being ER/PR positive, HER2- negative. Genomic assays such as Oncotype DX® have identified patients with reduced distant metastasis and lack of chemotherapy benefit, allowing patients to avoid excess toxicity. These genomic assays have been shown to be prognostic for local-regional recurrence (LRR). The de-escalation of therapy is of interest to patients, providers, and payers. Low risk, as identified by both the use of Oncotype and Mammaprint® is associated with low LRR after lumpectomy and breast radiotherapy. TRIAL DESIGN: In the DEBRA trial, we hypothesized that breast-conserving surgery (BCS) alone is non-inferior to BCS plus radiotherapy for in-breast cancer control and breast preservation in women intending appropriate endocrine therapy for stage 1 (ER and/or PR-positive, HER2-negative, and Oncotype DX Recurrence Score [RS] low) breast cancer. Stratification is by age (<60; ≥60), tumor size (≤1 cm; >1-2 cm), and RS <11, RS 11-18. Patients are randomized to either breast radiotherapy (RT) plus endocrine therapy (arm 1) or to observation and endocrine therapy (arm 2). Arm 1 therapy is post-lumpectomy breast RT using standard methods (hypo- or conventional-fractionated whole breast irradiation with or without boost, accelerated partial breast irradiation) and at least 5 years of endocrine therapy (tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitor). In arm 2, at least 5 years of endocrine therapy (tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitor) will be given. The specific regimen of endocrine therapy in both arms is at the treating physician’s discretion. ELIGIBLITY: Patients who are stage 1: pT1 (2 cm), pN0, age ≥50 to <70 years, status post (s/p) lumpectomy with negative margins (no ink on tumor ), s/p axillary nodal staging (SNB or AND), ER and/or PR positive by ASCO/CAP, HER2-negative by ASCO/CAP, and Oncotype DX RS of ≤18 on diagnostic core biopsy or resected specimen. ENDPOINTS: Primary: In-breast recurrence (IBR). Secondary: Breast conservation rate, invasive in-breast recurrence (IIBR), relapse free interval (RFI), distant disease-free survival (DDFS), overall survival (OS), patient-reported breast pain, patient-reported worry about recurrence, and adherence to endocrine therapy. STATISTICS: We assume a clinically acceptable difference in IBR of 4% at 10 years to judge omission of RT as non-inferior (10-year event-free survival for RT group is 95.6% versus 91.6% for the omission of RT group). To be able to detect non-inferiority with 80% power and a one sided α=0.025, and assuming that there would be a ramp-up in accrual in the first two years of the study (leveling off in Years 3-5), 1,670 (835 per arm) patients are required to be randomized. This conservatively assumes loss to follow-up will be 1% per year. Some of the T1a patients accrued to this study will have oncotype DX scores >18, making them ineligible for the study. Abstract:

AbstractThe suprabenthic mysid Schistomysis parkeri was monthly sampled in 1991-92 in the swash zone of Hendaye beach (southeastern part of the Bay of Biscay) to determine its life history pattern and secondary production. This motile species is one of the main components of the suprabenthic assemblage inhabiting this exposed beach. Characterized by a patchy distribution and a narrow bathymetric zonation parallel to the shore line, its mean density fluctuated between 6 and 443 individuals per 5 m-2 during the sampling period; nevertheless, the population migrates to deeper grounds of the bay when bad weather occurs. It breeds throughout the year with a maximal recruitment in July and produces three successive generations. The potential longevity of individuals is less than one year and differs between generations. Using the size frequency method, its annual production was estimated to 263 mg 5 m-2 with a corresponding P/B ratio of 9.7; calculated by a multiple regression model, the production estimate was 35% higher but the P/B ratio was in the same order of magnitude.

Norman Mailer was haunted by the specter of social death—a specter created for him by living as a Jew between the parentheses created by the Holocaust and the prospect of nuclear Armageddon. As an antidote to social death, Mailer sought its opposite—sovereignty within and beyond his writer's sphere. In the boxer Muhammad Ali, Mailer found an exemplar of the seizure of sovereignty within and beyond a sphere. The Fight chronicles the heavyweight championship battle between Ali and George Foreman in Zaire, a country treated like a private bank account by its dictator, Mobutu Sese Seko. I argue that Mailer regrettably failed to emphasize fully the fact that Zaire was exhibit B (the Vietnam War being the writer's inevitable exhibit A) in the case Mailer passionately made that the Cold War brutalized the American psyche.

Abstract:

The paper addresses B. Norman's humorous etymological Russian dictionary. By reanalyzing the morphological structure of Russian words, Norman provides them with knowingly false, amusing interpretations. The paper proposes to investigate the word-formation aspects of Norman’s re-analyzed lexis. Abstract:

The modified Chrispin-Norman radiography score (CNS) is used in evaluation of radiographic changes in children with cystic fibrosis (CF). We evaluated the correlation of modified CNS with peak exercise capacity (Wpeak) and ventilatory efficiency (reflected by breathing reserve index—BRI) during progressive cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). Thirty-six children aged 8–17 years were stratified according to their CNS into 3 groups: mild (<10), moderate (10–15), and severe (>15). CPET was performed on a cycle ergometer. Lung function tests included spirometry and whole-body plethysmography. Patients with higher CNS had lower FEV1 (p < .001), Wpeak predicted (%; p = .01) and lower mean peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak/kg; p = .014). The BRI at the anaerobic threshold and at Wpeak was elevated in patients with the highest CNS values (p < .001). The modified CNS correlates moderately with Wpeak (R = −0.443; p = .007) and BRI (R = −0.419; p = .011). Stepwise multiple linear regression showed that RV/TLC was the best predictor of Wpeak/pred (%; B = −0.165; b = −0.494; R2 = .244; p = .002). Children with CF who have high modified CNS exhibit decreased exercise tolerance and ventilatory inefficacy during progressive effort.

Abstract:

The halocyprid ostracod genus Boroecia Poulsen, 1973 is described in detail and Boroecia borealis (Sars, 1866) is nominated as type species. We unravel several taxonomic confusions and uncertainties in the earlier literature that had their origins in the classification of Boroecia maxima and Boroecia antipoda (Müller, 1906) as subspecies of Boroecia borealis. Three new species are described, B. alaska n. sp., and B. danae n. sp. from the Pacific and B. hopcrofti n. sp. from the high Arctic, bringing the total number of species in the genus to six. Five of the species are described in detail, the only exception is Boroecia maxima (Brady & Norman, 1896), for which there is already a full description in the literature. Comparative illustrations are provided for all the species together with standardised meristic data. A key to the identity all six species is included.

Molostovskaja (1979, p. 54) described without illustrations the family Darwinuloididae Molostovskaja, 1979. The following year, Molostovskaja (1980, p. 33) described the family again as new [Darwinuloididae fam. nov.]. She included the genus Whipplella Holland, 1934, in the family and illustrated Darwinuloides svijazhicus (Sharapova 1948) (Molostovskaja, 1980, p. 28, figs. 5a, b, 8). Schneider (1948, p. 29, pl. 2, figs, 1a, b) originally described and illustrated this species as “Darwinula svijazhicus Sharapova n. mns.” Two years later, Molostovskaja (1982, p. 158) illustrated cross-sections of the adductor muscle attachment scar patterns in the families of the Darwinulacea Brady and Norman, 1889. Later Molostovskaja (1990, p. 166) erected the superfamily Darwinuloidacea Molostovskaja, 1979 to include Whipplella Holland, 1934, Vymella Kalis and Mischina in Mischina and Kalis, 1975, and questionably Pruvostina Scott and Summerson, 1943. In the same paper, she illustrated Whipplella sp. (pl. 72, figs. 6a, b) [from Sohn, 1977], Vymella dobrinini (Kashevarova, 1961) (pl. 72, figs. 7a-c), Darwinuloides sentjakensis (Sharapova in Schneider, 1948) (pl. 73, figs. 5, 6), and D. svijazhicus (Sharapova in Schneider, 1948) (pl. 74, figs. 14a, b).

The field screening of soybean germplasm against yellow mosaic virus disease was conducted at Norman E. Borlaug Crop Research Centre, G. B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar during Kharif, 2015 and 2016. The per cent disease incidence was varied from 0 to 58 among the tested germplasm lines. The highly resistant germplasm lines were DS 3101, PS 1550, SL 955, SL 983 and UPSM 534. Based on the disease reaction, the germplasm lines categorized as highly resistant (20.83%) relatively resistant (12.5%), moderately resistant (4.17%), moderately susceptible (12.5%), susceptible (33.33%) and highly susceptible (16.67%).

Uchida and Shibata have proposed the “sweeping-magnetic-twist” mechanism for the formation of astrophysical jets in relation to the accretion disks (disks around protostars, around black hole in the center of active galactic nuclei, and so on) in which a jet is accelerated by thejxBforce in the relaxing magnetic twist created in the winding-up of the poloidal magnetic field by the rotation of the contracting disk (Uchida and Shibata 1985a, b; Shibata and Uchida 1986a, b; Uchidaet al.1985). In this mechanism, a jet is collimated also by thejxBforce due to the large scale poloidal magnetic field whose footpoints are squeezed in the contracting disk. The main mechanism involved is different from that of centrifugal wind models (Blandford and Payne 1982, Pudritz and Norman 1983) and worked out indepentently, but the centrifugal effect itself is automatically built-in.
