Abstract:
Over the past several decades, there has been a sharp increase in psychiatric diseases but relatively little attention to improving poor nutritional patterns that affect mental health conditions. Long-term nutrient deprivation results in neuroinflammation, which contributes to causing mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety disorder, and schizophrenia. A growing body of research substantiates the benefits of supplementing many essential nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, the B complex vitamins, vitamin E, and the minerals magnesium, iron, zinc, choline, calcium, and selenium to help prevent and treat many mental illnesses. These nutrients are often limited in the standard Western diet. Importantly, it is not just one single nutrient that is important to optimizing brain health but all the nutrients working in concert in a healthy, well-balanced approach that helps to optimize brain function and prevent disease. This chapter reviews the various nutrients involved in maintaining optimal brain health.

Abstract:
In the different fields of science, many times, there is a need to estimate the associations between variables, as an approach to understanding the interaction of one as a function of the others. It is usually done by applying restrictive models, such as analysis of variance and linear regression. This type of analysis requires that the dependent variable be continuous, have a normal and constant distribution of the mean and variance. However, when the dependent variable is discrete or categorical, the linear model is not viable. Faced with this impediment, the theory of linear models arises and is expanded to broader categories, which have been called Generalized Linear Models. This category assumes that all distribution functions are exponential, in which the normal distribution is located. In this sense, in this research, Generalized Least Squares methods were applied in their various variants: of moments, ordinary and feasible. These models allow calculating the parameters of models in which the dependent variable has a Poisson or multinomial distribution. In such a way that the Generalized Least Squares serve as a tool to analyze the effect of the elections on public spending and its relationship with the electoral results, analyzing the variables of a budgetary nature, derived from the possibility that the government in power continues or is re-elected. For this, data related to the states and municipalities of México in the period 2007 to 2019 are used.

Richardson, Henry. The Idea of the Moral Community. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190247744.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explicates the idea of the moral community as the open-ended set of all individuals who can wrong or be wronged by another. Examining these ideas of wronging someone or being wronged by someone as dyadic ideas, intrinsically involving a moral relationship between two persons, the discussion casts this kind of relationship as structuring the moral community. Dyadic norms, which give rise to directed rights and duties, give that structure definite generality and firmness. Distinguishing norms that merely mention another person (“A ought to compensate B”) from truly directed or dyadic norms (“A owes it to B to compensate B”), the text notes the metaphysically demanding sort of ontological correlativity that holds between directed duties and the corresponding rights. This, in turn, sets the stage for an important challenge posed by Michael Thompson—namely, how to explain what unites all persons into one moral community.

Abstract:
Hereditary fructose intolerance is an autosomal recessive disease which is manifest at weaning but formal diagnosis is often delayed until late childhood or adult life. Fructose, sucrose and sorbitol present in offending foods and drinks induce hypoglycaemia, hypophosphatemia, acidosis, hyperuricemia and hypermagnesemia. If unrecognized, the disease causes failure to thrive, a reno-tubular syndrome with nephrocalcinosis, jaundice, and ultimately liver injury. Parenteral administration of fructose or its congeners can be fatal. Molecular analysis of the aldolase B gene has revolutionized diagnosis. Treatment by a strict dietary exclusion (supplemented by water-soluble vitamins) is successful and, if instituted in a timely manner, is compatible with a normal life span. Early diagnosis and dietary modification are critical for well-being and normal development in affected children.

Abstract:
This essay focuses on the reflections of a planning agent on her distinctive synchronic norms of practical thinking. It develops the idea of planning agency that is self-reinforcing by way of considerations of self-governance: given that one is a planning agent whose practical thinking is guided by basic planning norms—something for which there is good reason—one’s self-governance will be such that conforming to those norms is partly constitutive of that self-governance. This helps articulate a framework within which (a) pragmatic grounds for planning agency quite generally, combine with (b) normative reasons of self-governance for conformity to basic norms in the particular case. This framework can be brought to bear by a reflective planning agent in support of basic norms of synchronic plan rationality. And this supports an interpretation of the idea that these norms are peremptory.

Abstract:
In this chapter social norms are redefined as “rules and standards that are understood by members of a group, and that guide morally relevant social behavior by way of social sanctions, instead of the force of laws.” In line with this revised definition, the chapter includes a discussion of how and when individuals enforce social norms along with the customary review of the literature on social norms as agents of social influence. A discussion of how to maximize the impact of social norms interventions follows with special consideration given to (a) combining descriptive and injunctive norms, (b) reference groups, (c) personal relevance, and (d) cognitive resources. The chapter also includes a discussion of the tendency to underestimate the influence of social norms, both on one’s own behavior and the behavior of others. Several conflicting results are identified and suggestions are made for how to resolve them with future research.

Full text
Abstract:
Acute kidney injury (AKI), regardless of its aetiology, can elicit persistent or permanent kidney tissue changes that are associated with progression to end-stage renal disease and a greater risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD). In other cases, AKI may result in complete repair and restoration of normal kidney function. The pathophysiological mechanisms of renal injury and repair include vascular, tubular, and inflammatory factors. The initial injury phase is characterized by rarefaction of peritubular vessels and engagement of the immune response via Toll-like receptor binding, activation of macrophages, dendritic cells, natural killer cells, and T and B lymphocytes. During the recovery phase, cell adhesion molecules as well as cytokines and chemokines may be instrumental by directing the migration, differentiation, and proliferation of renal epithelial cells; recent data also suggest a critical role of M2 macrophage and regulatory T cell in the recovery period. Other processes contributing to renal regeneration include renal stem cells and the expression of growth hormones and trophic factors. Subtle deviations in the normal repair process can lead to maladaptive fibrotic kidney disease. Further elucidation of these mechanisms will help discover new therapeutic interventions aimed at limiting the extent of AKI and halting its progression to CKD or ESRD.

Abstract:
Terrorism is first and foremost viewed as a matter of security policy; however, its emergence, perception, effects, prevention and mitigation actually involve a multitude of societal sectors as well as academic fields, which also means that numerous academics, practitioners and decision-makers are in a position to contribute to analysing and countering terrorism. This handbook serves as the first German-language reference work on terrorism studies, capturing the complexity of this subject in its entirety.
