Abstract:
Understanding the association between subjective emotional experiences and physiological signals is of practical and theoretical significance. Previous psychophysiological studies have shown a linear relationship between dynamic emotional valence experiences and facial electromyography (EMG) activities. However, whether and how subjective emotional valence dynamics relate to facial EMG changes nonlinearly remains unknown. To investigate this issue, we re-analyzed the data of two previous studies that measured dynamic valence ratings and facial EMG of the corrugator supercilii and zygomatic major muscles from 50 participants who viewed emotional film clips. We employed multilinear regression analyses and two nonlinear machine learning (ML) models: random forest and long short-term memory. In cross-validation, these ML models outperformed linear regression in terms of the mean squared error and correlation coefficient. Interpretation of the random forest model using the SHapley Additive exPlanation tool revealed nonlinear and interactive associations between several EMG features and subjective valence dynamics. These findings suggest that nonlinear ML models can better fit the relationship between subjective emotional valence dynamics and facial EMG than conventional linear models and highlight a nonlinear and complex relationship. The findings encourage emotion sensing using facial EMG and offer insight into the subjective–physiological association.

Abstract:
Dynamic photorefractive memories that store image information multiplexed in a photorefractive volume are promising for parallel information processing and computing due to their large storage capacity, fast access, and read/write/erase capability1. Incoherent erasure process can be used for updating these dynamic memories, but this process is much slower than the writing process. In contrast, selective erasure process2 based on superimposed recording of a π-phase-shifted image onto the old image is reported to be much faster than the incoherent erasure3. Arbitrary phase shift has also been investigated for optical interconnects4, assuming a grating with maximum refractive index modulation at the beginning of the selective erasure process. For dynamic photorefractive memory application it is important to understand the dynamics of the selective erasure process for multiplexed images, where each of them is characterized by a much smaller refractive index modulation. Dynamic photorefractive memory that uses π-phase-shifted selective erasure process has recently been implemented, demonstrating fast erasure capability5. In this manuscript, we analyze and confirm experimentally the dynamics of the erasure process. For simplicity and generality we assume two gratings with an arbitrary phase shift between them to be a composite grating, one being the old grating and another the new grating.

Abstract:
This paper presents empirical evidence on the nature of idiosyncratic shocks to firms and discusses its role for firm behavior and aggregate fluctuations. We document that firm-level sales and productivity are hit by heavy-tailed shocks and follow a nonlinear stochastic process, thus departing from the canonical linear. We estimate a state-of-the-art model to flexibly capture the rich dynamics uncovered in the data and characterize the drivers of nonlinear persistence and non-Gaussian shocks. We show that these features are crucial to get empirically plausible volatility and persistence of micro-originated (granular) aggregate fluctuations.
