Abstract:
Latar belakang. Para dokter sering mengalami kesulitan membedakan diare akut yang disebabkan oleh bakteri maupun non-bakteri.Kadar laktoferin (LF) tinja merupakan petanda migrasi neutrofil dalam lumen usus dan dihubungkan dengan inflamasi usus.Tujuan. Mengetahui hubungan antara patogen usus dengan kadar LF tinja pada anak dengan diare akutMetode. Penelitian analitik observasional dengan pendekatan potong lintang dilakukan di dua rumah sakit umum kota Manado selamabulan Juli hingga November 2013. Pengambilan sampel dilakukan secara konsekutif pada anak berusia 7-60 bulan yang menderitadiare akut. Hasil dianalisis secara deskriptif untuk data karakteristik anak dan data laboratorium, serta analisis regresi dan korelasilinier sederhana. Data diolah menggunakan program SPSS versi 21, dengan tingkat kemaknaan p<0,05.Hasil. Total sampel yang didapatkan 43 pasien diare akut, terdiri atas 25 laki-laki dan 18 perempuan. Kadar LF tinja yang disebabkanoleh patogen usus bakteri didapatkan rerata 9,65 (SB 3,69) μg/g. Sementara kadar LF tinja yang disebabkan oleh patogen usus nonbakteri didapatkan rerata 3,72 (SB 1,48) μg/g. Terdapat perbedaan bermakna rerata LF tinja pada kedua kelompok patogen usus(p<0,001, r=0,591).Kesimpulan. Adanya hubungan yang bermakna antara patogen usus dengan kadar laktoferin tinja pada anak dengan diare akut.Patogen usus golongan bakteri memiliki kadar laktoferin tinja yang lebih tinggi daripada patogen usus golongan non bakteri.

Latar Belakang: : Laparatomi merupakan pembedahan insisi menuju rongga abdomen dimana operasi yang dapat dilakukan dengan prosedur laparotomi pada bagian digestive antara lain herniotomi, gasterktomi, kolesisduodenostomi hepatektomi, splenoktomi, appendiktomi, kolostomi. Pemulihan peristaltik usus yang lebih cepat disebabkan oleh adanya kegiatan mobilisasi dini di mana kegiatan mobilisasi tersebut akan berpengaruh pada sistem kardiovaskuler, pernafasan, dan metabolisme. Tujuan : Mengidentifikasikan pengaruh mobilisasi dini terhadap peristaltik usus pada pasien post op laparatomi di Rumah Sakit Umum Ulin Banjarmasin Metode: Pra Eksperimen dengan rancangan pretest dan posttest (one group pre-post test design). Sampel dalam penelitian berjumlah 14 orang, metode pengambilan data dilakukan secara non probability sampling yaitu Accidental Sampling Hasil: Uji Paired Sample T-Test menunjukan p : 0.000 < 0.05 yang mengindikasikan ada pengaruh mobilisasi dini terhadap peristaltik usus pada pasien dengan post op laparatomi. The aimed of this research was to investigated human intestinal bacteria (<em>Streptococcus faecalis, Eschericia coli,</em> <em>Salmonella Sp.</em>, and <em>Vibrio fischeri</em>), to investigated dose of tartrazine, and to investigated biotransformation of tartrazine by human intestinal bacteria (<em>Streptococcus faecalis, Eschericia coli,</em> <em>Salmonella Sp.</em>, and <em>Vibrio fischeri</em>). The method of this research was experiment with significant correlation to investigated biotransformation of tartrazine by human intestinal bacteria (<em>Streptococcus faecalis, Eschericia coli,</em> <em>Salmonella Sp.</em>, and <em>Vibrio fischeri</em>). This study is primarily focussed on made bacteria medium, made standart inoculums of bacteria, and evaluation for activity of human intestinal bacteria (<em>Streptococcus faecalis, Eschericia coli,</em> <em>Salmonella Sp.</em>, and <em>Vibrio fischeri</em>). The results obtained were attributed to the human intestinal bacteria was used in this research was biotransformated tartrazine. From the results that had been increase dose of tartrazine correlation with increase biotransformation by human intestinal bacteria. Highest dose of tartrazine was 15 mg, and highest biotransformation by <em>Vibrio fischeri</em>, which rate of zone decolourisation diameter was 1,22 cm, and rate of zone decolourisation was 1,44 cm<sup>2</sup>. Statistically showed significantly in correlation dose of tartrazine with rate of zone decolourisation (0,001 &lt; P &lt; 0,05), but statistically showed non significantly in correlation bacteria with rate of zone decolourisation (0,05 &lt; P &lt; 0,268).

Stroke merupakan penyakit penyebab kematian terbanyak kedua didunia dan peringkat ketiga terbanyak sebagai penyebab kecacatan. Stroke tidak hanya berdampak pada bidang kesehatan, tetapi dapat mempengaruhi bidang sosial, fisik, dan psikologis karena penurunan kualitas hidup penderita dan bidang ekonomi karena memerlukan biaya yang besar dalam perawatannya. Hingga saat ini penanganan stroke masih terpusat dalam pengobatan dan rehabilitasi, diperlukan upaya promotif dan preventif dalam penanganan stroke. Beberapa studi menunjukkan bahwa terdapat hubungan antara mikrobiota usus dan sistem saraf yang disebut Gut-Brain Connection atau Gut-brain Axis (GBA). Mikrobiota usus memiliki peranan penting dalam GBA. Menjaga keseimbangan mikrobiota usus merupakan salah satu cara dalam mencegah terjadinya stroke, melalui komunikasi dua arah baik secara neuronal atau non-neuronal yang terjadi antara otak dan usus.

Sistem pakar dapat digunakan dalam dunia kesehatan dan sebagai media informasi bagi masyarakat terutama penderita penyakit untuk mengetahui Stadium dari kanker usus besar yang diderita sebagai diagnosa awal, juga sebagai alat bantu bagi dokter untuk dapat mengambil keputusan secara cepat dan lebih akurat. Kolorektal merupakan suatu tumor ganas terbanyak diantara tumor lainya yang menyerang saluran pencernaan, Kanker usus besar bisa berkembang secara diam-diam, seperti anemia akibat kurang darah atau bahkan non spesifik, seperti berkurangnya berat badan. Biasanya ada perubahan kebiasaan dalam buang air; baik diare, sembelit atau perubahan konsistensi tinja. Pertumbuhan tumor pada dinding sebelah kiri bawah khususnya pada rektum bisa menyebabkan adanya perasaan buang air yang tidak tuntas disebut tenesmus. Perubahan bentuk atau warna tinja khususnya jika berwarna merah cerah atau merah gelap dapat juga menjadi indikasi adanya pendarahan yang disebabkan kanker usus besar. Oleh karena itu dibangun suatu sistem pakar yang dapat membantu menyelesaikan masalah dengan menggunakan metode sistem pakar certainty factor.

Abstract:
Infeksi cacing adalah sebagai infestasi satu atau lebih cacing parasit usus yang terdiri dari golongannematoda usus. Diantara nematoda usus ada sejumlah spesies yang penularannya melalui tanah atau biasa disebut dengan cacing jenis STH yaitu Ascaris lumbricoides, Necator americanus, Trichuris trichuira dan Ancylostoma duodenale. Tujuan dalam penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui gambaran tingkat infeksi cacing soil transmitted helminth (STH) pada pengrajin gerabah di Desa Banyumulek Lombok Barat. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan metode observational analitik dengan pendekatan cross-sectional, teknik pengambilan sampel dengan cara teknik Non random Purposive Sampling,dan Analisis hasil penelitian dilakukan secara deskriptif. Jumlah Sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah 30 orang. Dari 30 sampel yang diperiksa di dapatkan 1 diantaranya positif terinfeksi kecacingan nematoda usus dengan ditemukannya telur cacing jenis Hookworm dengan persentase 3,33% sedangkan pada sampel lainya tidak ditemukan adanya nematoda usus atau negatif dengan persentase 96,66%. Dengan tingkat infeksi termasuk infeksi ringan. Jadi kesimpulannya adalah Telur cacing golongan STH yang didapatkan pada feses pengrajin gerabah adalah Hookworm dengan tingkat infeksi kecacingan termasuk dalam kategori infeksi ringan.

Stroke is the second most prevalent cause of death in the world and placed third in disability causes worldwide. Beside affecting health, the reduced quality of life and the expensive cost of its treatment also has a huge impact on social, physical, and psychological aspect of a patient. Currently, the management of stroke is centered on currative and rehabilitative effort. Hence, the preventive efforts are on demand. Several studies have showed that there is a link between gut microbiota and the nervous system in somehing called the Gut-Brain Axis (GBA). Intestinal microbiota plays an important role in GBA. Therefore, maintaining the balance of intestinal microbiota, through neuronal or non-neuronal two-way communication between both of those system, is a promising way to prevent stroke. The writing of this article includes various sources originating from scientific journals and government guidelines and related agencies. Permintaan pasar akan kebutuhan ikan nila yang tinggi mengakibatkan pembudidaya ikan berlomba-lomba dalam meningkatkan produksi usaha, salah satu cara yang dilakukan adalah dengan meningkatkan konsumsi pakan. Mengingat padat tebar yang tinggi tanpa menjaga kualitas air, mengakibatkan kualitas air menjadi buruk sehingga berdampak menurunnya penyerapan nutrisi oleh ikan sehingga berdampak pertumbuhan ikan. Salah satu organ yang berperan langsung dalam penyerapan nutrisi adalah usus. Kalsium merupakan salah satu sumber mineral yang butuhkan oleh ikan untuk proses metabolisme dalam tubuh, sehingga kebutuhan mineral kalsium oleh ikan harus dipenuhi secara maksimal. Sumber kalsium yang digunakan dapat berasal dari limbah perikanan, salah satunya adalah cangkang langkitang. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat gambaran histologi usus ikan nila yang diberikan pakan dengan campuran adsorben cangkang langkitang. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode Rancangan Acak Lengkap pola non faktorial. Parameter yang diamati adalah histologi usus, kelangsungan hidup ikan, pertumbuhan bobot mutlak, pertumbuhan panjang mutlak, laju pertumbuhan harian, rasio konversi pakan, efesiensi pakan, suhu dan pH. Hasil penelitian pada gambaran histologi usus menunjukkan panjang vili terbaik terdapat pada perlakuan C (949,02 µm) dan D (931,39 µm) dibandingkan pada perlakuan B (744,50 µm). Pada parameter pertumbuhan seperti kelangsungan hidup, pertumbuhan bobot mutlak, pertumbuhan panjang mutlak, laju pertumbuhan harian, rasio konversi pakan, efesiensi pemanfaatan pakan perlakuan terbaik dijumpai pada A (kontrol) dan B (Adsorben 0,5%).

Meskipun mampu mengurangi gejala inflamasi, penggunaan OAINS juga menimbulkan gangguan dalam mekanisme pertahanan mukosa saluran pencernaan. Kerusakan mukosa saluran pencernaan akibat OAINS tidak hanya dialami lambung, namun juga dialami oleh usus halus yang disebut enteropati. Namun demikian, enteropati akibat OAINS masih belum mendapat perhatian yang besar.

Tren konsumen pangan telah mengalami perkembangan dengan meningkatnya kesadaran akan kesehatan, seperti permintaan probiotik yang mulai meningkat. Indonesia kaya akan sumber bakteri asam laktat yang berpotensi probiotik. Joruk Maman merupakan makanan fermentasi khas Propinsi Riau. Joruk maman telah diketahui mengandung bakteri asam laktat. Sifat fungsional dari BAL probiotik dapat berbeda tergantung strainnya. Tujuan penelitian adalah mengidentifikasi dan karakterisasi bakteri asam laktat dari Joruk Maman. Karakterisasi BAL meliputi sifat gram, bentuk, motilitas, sifat katalase dan pengujian ketahanan terhadap kondisi pH lambung dan usus serta identifikasi dengan API Kit Tes. Hasil Penelitian menunjukkan isolat bakteri asam laktat dari Joruk Maman berbentuk batang, bakteri gram positif, bersifat katalase negatif dan non motil. BAL Joruk Maman berpotensi sebagai kandidat probiotik yaitu tahan terhadap pH lambung (2.0) dan usus (7.2) dengan ketahanan 93.07 % pada pH lambung dan 96.13 % pada pH usus serta teridentifikasi sebagai Weisella confusa.

Lo studio delle fonti giuridiche romane relative all'usucapione, come mezzo di acquisizione e di tutela della proprietà e come risposta alle esigenze di certezza dell'ordinamento in merito alla titolarità dei beni, trova nella particolare figura dell'usucapio libertatis, un interessante specchio di impostazioni probabilmente ben più antiche rispetto alla configurazione classica dell'istituto e, più in generale, dei rapporti tra proprietà e diritti reali minori. Partendo da un inquadramento generale dell'usucapio, volto ad individuarne la funzione e a metterne in evidenza gli elementi fondanti - il tempus e la possessio - la ricerca si pone quindi l'obbiettivo di analizzare la particolare figura dell'usucapio libertatis, attraverso lo studio delle fonti ad essa relative e dei suoi rapporti con il non usus, in relazione all'evoluzione storico-giuridica dell'idea di servitù e della determinazione degli assetti proprietari, ripercorrendo così il percorso storico che trova le sue radici nell'usus e che giunse nel corso dei secoli, alla teorizzazione della prescrizione estintiva dei diritti.

An optimal control approach towards generating electricity is used to analyze the trade-off between the use of primary sources which are regarded as commodities, such as fossil fuels, biomass and water, and their other economic uses (for example, in the petrochemical industry, in the production of fuels, in agriculture, in steelmaking, and so forth). In order to do so, a dynamic model is presented which establishes relationships between economic growth, the fossil fuel, water and biomass sectors, and energy policies, based on the application of the Pontryagin Maximum Principle. Among other results, the analysis establishes that, in the optimal path, the price of commodities for non-energy uses should be twice the price of the energy assets, which indicates the need to use sources which are not commodities such as solar energy, wind energy, and geothermal energy, to generate electricity

Space Link Extension (SLE) is a set of Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) recommended standards for extending the space link from ground stations to other spaceflight mission ground facilities over a ground network, allowing distributed access to space link telecommand and telemetry services. The currently defined and implemented SLE recommendations are oriented around a traditional CCSDS telecommand and telemetry protocol set, which uses discrete telecommand frames that are encapsulated in Communication Link Transmission Units (CLTUs) for transport over the ground segment, and telemetry data encapsulated in Transfer Frames at the spacecraft. This paper discusses several non-traditional uses of the SLE services. The applications addressed within lie outside the discrete packet telecommand/telemetry subset of the SLE recommendations that are fully defined by CCSDS. This paper will focus on the use of the currently implemented SLE model to enable the transport of other forms of data, which may be subject to various transmission constraints, across the ground segment.

A captação de águas pluviais não constitui nova estratégia ou tecnologia. No entanto, recentemente tem sido proposta em regiões bem desenvolvidas ou em desenvolvimento (peri-urbanas) em resposta a grandes períodos de estiagens, aumento da demanda por água, maior conscientização pública das enchentes urbanas e sua gênese e, aumento do interesse em práticas de construções sustentáveis, que integram também o uso racional da água. As escolas constituem uma importante fundação da nação, e tem influência no desenvolvimento da sociedade e da sensibilização/ conscientização sobre as questões ambientais. Muitos dos usos da água nas escolas envolvem usos menos nobres da água. Neste contexto, nessa dissertação de mestrado além da análise de marcos legais nesse assunto, foi realizada pesquisa de opinião (entrevista e questionário) junto a atores que interferem no processo decisório da utilização das águas pluviais nas escolas para fins não potáveis. Foram observadas as condições físicas-construtivas das escolas do município do Rio de Janeiro, sobretudo na região da 7a. CRE, que abrange a região da Baixada de Jacarepaguá, área de expansão da cidade. Foi implementada uma unidade para coleta e caracterização da qualidade das águas pluviais, além da caracterização e estudo dos volumes de primeiro descarte (first flush). Os parâmetros de qualidade da água pH, T, OD, ORP, Tu, STD, Condutividade e Salinidade, foram observados com auxílio de sonda multiparâmetros e, através de análise laboratorial de acordo com o Standard Methods, os coliformes termotolerantes. No estudo de percepção foi verificada uma grande aceitação do aproveitamento de águas pluviais para fins não potáveis, embora diretores de escola tenham apresentado informações/percepção divergentes sobre consumo e contas de água das escolas, de sua coordenadoria. Na análise dos parâmetros de qualidade da água versus registros pluviométricos foi observada variabilidade nos eventos pluviométricos observados que limitaram a correlação entre os mesmos, e acabou limitando as conclusões dos estudos de volumes para primeira lavagem e descarte (first flush). Os resultados da pesquisa permitem recomendar a implementação de políticas públicas para aproveitamento de águas pluviais para fins não potáveis nas escolas, mas, com o devido apoio tecnológico. Recomenda-se o aperfeiçoamento e automatização do sistema de coleta de águas pluviais para os estudos de first-flush e otimização dos volumes de descarte.
Rainwater harvesting does not constitute a new strategy or technology. However, recently it has been proposed in well-developed regions or in development (peri-urban) in response to long periods of dryness, increased demand for water, greater public awareness of urban flooding and its genesis, and increased interest in sustainable construction practices, incorporating also the rational use of water. Schools are an important foundation of the nation and has influence in the development of society and awareness about environmental issues. Many of the uses of water in schools involve less noble uses of water. In this context, this dissertation in addition to the analysis of legal frameworks in this matter was held survey (interview and questionnaire) with actors who interfere in the decision-making process of the use of rainwater for non potable purposes in schools. Schools physical- constructive conditions were observed of the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, especially in the region of the 7th CRE, which covers the region of Baixada de Jacarepaguá, area in expansion of the city. It was implemented a unit for collection and characterization of rainwater quality, plus the characterisation and study of volumes of first flush. The water quality parameters pH, T, DO, ORP, Tu, TDS, Conductivity and Salinity, were observed with the aid of multi-parameter probe and, through laboratory testing in accordance with the Standard Methods, the fecal coliforms. In the study of perception was verified a wide acceptance of the use of rainwater for drinking purposes, although school directors have submitted divergent perception/information about consumption and water bills of the schools in its coordination. In the analysis of water quality parameters versus rainfall records was observed a certain variability in the rainfall events observed that limited the correlation between them, and ended up limiting the conclusions of the studies of volumes for the first washing and disposal (first flush). The search results allowed to recommend the implementation of public policies for rainwater utilization for potable purposes in schools, but with a technological support. It is recommended the improvement and automation of the rainwater collection system for studies of first-flush and optimization of disposition volumes.

Abstract:

Purpose: The purpose of this project was two-fold. One, to test the accuracy and usefulness of a clinically unused dose calculation algorithm for the Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion radiosurgery unit that accounts for heterogeneities in the patient volume. This process included designing, fabricating, and testing a novel phantom from idea stage through production and use. Two, to facilitate and provide dosimetry for irradiating a large number of mice and rats to develop a murine model of radiation induced necrosis in the brain.

Methods/Materials: To test the dose calculation algorithm, we used a commercially available anthropomorphic head phantom and EBT2 radiochromic film to evaluate predicted vs measured dose delivery for the clinically accepted algorithm, which assumes a homogeneous treatment volume, and the convolution algorithm, which takes into account heterogeneities within the treatment volume. In addition, we designed and fabricated a novel phantom that could accommodate various heterogeneities along with EBT2 film and an ion chamber. We again evaluated predicted vs measured dose with varying material configurations for both algorithms. To assist the murine necrosis model, we developed a novel mouse positioning and irradiation system utilizing the Gamma Knife Perfexion that was designed to be accurate, repeatable and efficient. We designed an animal immobilizing planform that could be incorporated into the clinical protocol for acquiring patient image data, image registration, and treatment planning.

Results: We demonstrated that the convolution algorithm is accurate to within a clinically acceptable three percent in cases of extreme heterogeneities, and it is clinically significantly more accurate than the standard homogeneous algorithm when large heterogeneities are present in the treatment volume. In addition, we were able to facilitate the development of a robust murine radiation necrosis model by irradiating more than 1,000 mice to a spatial accuracy of within 0.5 millimeters in all directions and to within five percent accuracy of prescription dose.

Conclusion: During the course of this work we successfully completed two large undertakings that are representative of tasks often asked of a clinical medical physicist. First, to evaluate a treatment delivery option in the radiation oncology clinic and make evidence based recommendations for clinical protocols. And second, to provide a reliable and scientifically sound service to collaborators and outside research groups when physics expertise is required.

Abstract:
The use of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) in acute care settings has drastically increased within the past 20 years. Research has indicated that NPPV is equally as effective as traditional mechanical ventilation(MV) in treating acute exacerbations of chronic pulmonary obstructive disease (COPD) and cardiogenic pulmonary edema. Furthermore, the risk of complication from NPPV is much lower than MV, in terms of ventilator-associated pneumonia and sepsis. It is imperative for the nurse to understand the various indications, interfaces, and potential complications associated with NPPV use. In addition to treating acute exacerbations of COPD and cardiogenic pulmonary edema, NPPV has been used for prevention of reintubation, palliative care, and status asthmaticus. Furthermore, NPPV could be delivered through various interfaces, such as nasal, facial, and helmet. Each of these interfaces could eventually cause complications for the patient, such as skin ulceration and sepsis. However, there is limited amount of research available discussing the role of the nurse in caring for the patient with NPPV. There are no standardized guidelines established to assist the nurse in this care, in terms of interface selection, prevention of complications, and staffing patterns. Several recommendations are presented at the end of this thesis to guide future nursing research, education, and clinical practice, such as exploring the role of oral care and education for NPPV patients.

The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) is the cornerstone of the non-proliferation regime and the centrepiece of global efforts to promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and further the goal of general and complete nuclear disarmament. Although there is no implementation body for the NPT, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been entrusted with key verification responsibilities under Article III of the treaty, where it plays an important role in achieving the objectives under Article IV to foster international cooperation for peaceful uses of nuclear energy. This paper argues that peaceful uses of science, technology and applications have an important role to play in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Noting that the European Union (EU) is the biggest donor of development assistance, the paper suggests that the EU enhance its contribution to peaceful uses of nuclear science, technology and applications through supporting the IAEA’s technical cooperation activities. This will contribute to delivering the EU’s nonproliferation goals, thus strengthening global human security.

The introduction of ride-hailing in cities of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) remains a relatively new topic in regional research and a contentious issue in local policy and practice. Evidence regarding users and how do they differ from non-users is scarce, and there is little documented evidence about how user preferences and perceptions may influence the uptake of ride-hailing. This paper uses primary data from a survey collected from users and non-users of ride-hailing in Bogotá during 2019 to develop a Latent Class Analysis Model (LCA) to identify clusters of users and non-users of ride-hailing. The paper builds on results from the LCA to reflect on conditions of advantage and disadvantage that may make ride-hailing attractive and beneficial for particular social groups. The paper identifies four unique clusters: Carless middle-income ride-hailing users, Disadvantaged non-users, Young middle-class non-users, and Advantaged ride-hailing users. The research uses data on such perceptions to draw insights that may inform commercial and policy decisions. Findings suggest that issues such as the perception of legality in ride-hailing and aversion to crime play a significant role in the choice of such a mode in the context of Bogotá, particularly among socially and transport advantaged users.

While schools may influence academic and non-academic outcomes, it is not clear whether schools that improve test scores are the same schools that causally improve longer-run outcomes. This policy brief uses rich administrative data covering the full population of Trinidad and Tobago to show that (1) School causal effects are multidimensional. Effects on test scores are weakly related to effects on crime, teen births, and adult employment; and (2) Parents of lower-achievers value effects on non-test outcomes relatively more than on tests while the opposite is true for parents of high-achievers. These findings suggest that policy evaluations based solely on test scores may be misleading about the welfare effects of school choice.

There is evidence to show that Chinese companies, with some state credit backing, are selling digital surveillance technologies to developing countries, which are then sometimes used in authoritarian practices. However, there is little direct evidence to show that surveillance technologies sold by Chinese companies have more authoritarian potential than the technologies sold by non-Chinese companies. Some researchers define “surveillance technologies” as including any form of digital infrastructure. There is data to show that developing country governments are contracting Chinese companies to build digital infrastructures. Other researchers define “surveillance technologies” as smart city projects. It is estimated that in 2019, Chinese smart city technologies have been purchased in over 100 countries worldwide. Other researchers look at more specific elements of smart cities: There are estimates that the “AI surveillance” components of smart cities have been purchased in 47-65 countries worldwide, and the “data integration” security platforms in at least 80 countries. None of these figures imply anything about how these technologies are used. The “dual use” nature of these technologies means that they can have both legitimate civilian and public safety uses as well as authoritarian control uses. There is evidence of some governments in Africa using Chinese surveillance technologies to spy on political opponents and arrest protesters. Some authors say that some Chinese smart city projects are actually not very effective, but still provide governments with a “security aesthetic”. Research also shows that Chinese smart city technologies have been sold mostly to illiberal regimes. However, in the wider context, there is also ample evidence of non-Chinese surveillance technologies contributing to authoritarian control in developing countries. There is also evidence that UK companies sell surveillance technologies to mostly illiberal regimes. Some reports consulted for this rapid review imply that Chinese surveillance technologies are more likely to be used for authoritarian control than those sold by non-Chinese companies. This analysis is largely based on circumstantial rather than direct evidence. They rely on prior judgements, which are themselves subject to ongoing enquiry in the literature: Almost all of the reports consulted for this rapid review say that the most important factor determining whether governments in developing countries will deploy a particular technology for repressive purposes is the quality of governance in the country. No reports were found in the literature reviewed of Chinese state pressure on developing countries to adopt surveillance technologies, and there were some anecdotal reports of officials in developing countries saying they did not come under any pressure to buy from Chinese companies.

Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) are organizations that provide small loans to borrowers who typically lack collateral, steady employment, or a verifiable credit history and therefore do not have access to traditional commercial banking. Blockchain technology could be used to create a more holistic view of the financial position of a potential borrower, which could result in better lending decisions. This study explores how blockchain technology has the potential to assist Microfinance Institutions in the water and sanitation sector through a pilot project developed in Peru. The improvements seen in the existing microfinance ecosystem during the implementation of the blockchain platform can be sorted into two main groups: improved institutional performance, and data ownership for the individuals.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of drop unit substitution in address-based samples for mail and web surveys. A drop point is a single US Postal Service (USPS) delivery point or receptacle that services multiple businesses, families, or households (USPS, 2017). Residential drop units are the individual housing units served by the drop point address. For the most part, address-based sampling frames list the number of units at a drop point address but will not contain information identifying specific units. Drop units comprise less than 2 percent of all residential addresses in the United States (McMichael, 2017), but they tend to be concentrated in certain large cities. In Queens, New York, for example, drop units constitute 27 percent of residential housing units. The problem with drop units for address-based surveys with mail contacts is that, without names or unit identifiers, there is no way to control which unit receives the various mailings. This limitation leads to distorted selection probabilities, renders the use of cash incentives by mail impractical, and precludes traditional methods for mail nonresponse follow-up, thus resulting in higher nonresponse. Alternatively, excluding drop units results in coverage error, which can be considerable for some subnational estimates. The authors propose a substitution approach when a drop unit is sampled—in other words, replacing the unit with a similar nearby unit in a non–drop point building.
