Kohnová, Markéta. "Marketing of non-profit organisations." Master's thesis, Vysoká škola ekonomická v Praze, 2008. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-4977.

Full text
Abstract:
Marketing has always been a key subject in commercial organisations, being an integral part of the business strategy and plans. In the non-profit sector, there is still a reticence towards the subject, often seen as either unnecessary or even a waste of the often very limited financial resources. As a reaction to that, this work discusses the importance and use of marketing in non-profit organisations and explores the issues around the subject with relation to the non-profit entities as well from a theoretical point of view as through case studies where the marketing efforts of a number of different non-profit organisations were analysed. The overall objective is to prove that also in non-profit organisations marketing should be an integral part of the overall business plan and is key to the overall success of the non-profit organisation.

Abstract:
The author of this paper seeks to explore what strategies are available for a multinational organization to manage knowledge, and to what extent a non-profit organization (NPO) have applied the same tools for managing knowledge within the organization as a multinational corporation (MNC). Through studying how knowledge flows within a MNC (Nonaka et al., 1995; Polanyi, 1966; Dani, 2006; DeNisi et al., 2003; Szulanski, 1996) and then analyzing the strategies for handling these flows the thesis will have presented a picture of Knowledge Management (KM), the processes for dealing with learning in the organization, which can then be compared to how KM works in a NPO – the World Bank. Through this comparison, this case study shows that all strategies employed by the World Bank are also used in MNCs, giving us the indication that NPOs can adapt KM strategies from MNCs and face many of the same challenges as an MNC does.

Abstract:

The dynamic mental health landscape has placed undue strain on hospitals, providers, and the community at large, resulting in gross inequities in access to care for underserved populations. This business plan proposes the establishment of a Los Angeles area non-profit community mental health clinic, embedded with a mission to accept adult patients suffering from co-occurring mental health and chronic medical conditions, regardless of insurance status and ability to pay. Under the Patient Centered Medical Home model, the aim of the Clinic will be to treat patients holistically by incorporating an interdisciplinary team of clinicians to ensure optimal health outcomes. While this plan acknowledges the challenges in serving indigent populations, the Clinic will contract with Medi-Cal and commit to continuous fundraising efforts to remain financially sustainable in order to improve the health of vulnerable Angelenos.

This study examines the strategies four organizations from the voluntary sector uses to manage its cooperation with the State. The study takes its starting point in Staffan Johansson's theory of how imposing a non-profit sector with a homogenization pressure. By investigating various characteristics of the voluntary sector, such as ideology, economic conditions and the possibility of criticism, explores how organizations perceive their role in co-operation. The study shows that ideology and the economic environment plays key role in how organizations can structure themselves both as a organization and their work. In relation to the state, it seems important that resource dependence is not too one-sided for organizations to retain its character, ideology and control over their activities.

Abstract:
Lean together with Toyota shocked the world when it came out. It turned a devastated company into the top car manufacturer. Ever since, the concept of lean has been implemented in companies outside of Toyota, industries outside of the car manufacturing industry and even in the public sector. The non-profit sector suffers problems of inexperienced leaders and economic problems according to theory which is hoped to be solved using lean. It has yet to be properly been introduced into non-profit organizations which this study aims to do. Previous research regarding an implementation of lean in an NPO is almost non-existing. Few instances where specific problems were solved using lean exist but nothing more. Implementing lean as it currently is does not fit well with the nature of non-profit organizations. Therefore, lean must be translated. To make up for a lack of previous research, the study collected qualitative data in the form of semi-structured interviews of eleven people within NPOs. Information regarding lean was gathered through a literature review. The study discovered that the problem regarding uneducated leaders was existent in most interviewed organizations while the economic problems wasn’t equally apparent. NPOs struggled with wastes due to lack of standardization since unpaid employees mostly help out during their spare time and leaders did not feel they could implement standardization and demands upon them. This and other conclusions constitute the answer to the research question with hopes to be a stepping stone to future research. Further research should focus on how to implement standardization while motivating unpaid employees.

Abstract:
2013 - 2014

Abstract:

Organisations are different from each other due to a myriad of factors. One of them is motive. Organizations fundamentally operate under two premises: first is to make profits and the second is to provide social services without an explicit intend to make profits. This study mainly focuses on these organisations and explores the compatible leadership behaviours in these organisations. In other words, what different leadership behaviours prevail in these organisations? Major studies in the field related to profit and non-profit organisations are discussed in a comparative way, from leadership, organisational, and employees’ point of views. Moreover, leadership approaches such as situational and major behavioural patterns are discussed in order to have a broader understanding of the topic.

Abstract:
Non-profit organizations are an indivisible part of the structure of today’s economy, the good they offer are rarely discountenanced, yet they face multiple problems that threaten the traditional foundations of their operations. Projects run by these organizations face new measurement metrics that streamlines how funds are subsequently obtained, they face stiff competition from counterpart organizations who strive to outdo each other for funds needed for programs and it is common place to see governments grant focus change with attendant change in the disbursement of funds. These dynamics place extra demand on non-profit organizations to be relevant in terms of programs and also to constantly re-strategize in the event that prior guaranteed funds are no longer accessible. Taking a cue from the models and theories of entrepreneurship, network systems and dynamic capabilities; projected as the framework for understanding how these non-profit organizations can sustain operations and remain relevant, the research work in this thesis seeks empirical evidence from the field in order to determine if the theories projected have the possibility of being applied in the operations of the non-profit sector.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: On a global scale, there are substantial studies about volunteerism. However, literature on volunteerism in South Africa, especially qualitative studies, is limited. The limited literature in South Africa does, however, suggest differences between Northern and Southern global contexts in terms of motivation for volunteering. In order to further build the South African literature in this area, this study explored the experiences of volunteers in a Stellenbosch based NPO. Their experiences encapsulate their motivations, challenges, and benefits of volunteering in their role as mentors to marginalised youth in this area. An overarching developmental framework was utilised to understand the volunteers’ motivations, and supplementary perspectives (Role-ID theory; citizenship and mentoring) were used to explore and contextualise their experiences. Within this framework, a qualitative methodology was employed to explore, gather, describe, and interpret the data. Two group interviews with 5 participants each were conducted. This was supplemented by 3 individual interviews. An interpretive phenomenological analytical approach was used to analyse the data. Findings suggested that other-oriented motivations, citizenship, sense of belonging, social exchange, self-enhancement, positive role model identity, improved personal and familial relations, wilderness solo experience, personal satisfaction and reward in seeing the fruit of their labour were some of the significant themes that emerged for volunteers from their volunteer experience. The main challenge they faced was that of transport mobility to keep mentor appointments. The implications of the findings for South African perspectives on volunteering are discussed.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Wêreldwyd is daar navorsing gedoen oor vrywillige werk.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Recent trends of financial distress for non-profit hospitals and the uptick in acquisition of these hospitals by for-profit entities indicate different focuses from the management of each type of hospital. Using data on hospital quality and basic financial measures, this study examines shift in the balance of financial and quality performance. The dataset focuses on private non-profit and for-profit hospitals with low bed counts, ranging from 50-200 total beds. Results indicate a positive relationship between for-profit status and basic financial performance measures, such as profitability, and a negative relationship with patient experience, cost reduction for the patient, and overall quality. This signals a tradeoff between financial performance and quality, especially measures relating to the customer. For-profit hospital management places more of an emphasis on the financial performance while non-profit hospital management demonstrates a balance between financial performance and high quality performance. Without being involved in hospital management decision-making, examining hospital outcomes is the best way to give insight into how hospital management is shifts performance priorities by different types of ownership.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to understand the importance of public relations activity in non-profit organisations. The study emphasizes the bearing public relations activities can have on non-profit organisations in the contemporary world. This is especially true in an over communicated society where the vast majority of organisations compete to gain access to the scare media resources to put their message across to their potential clients, supporters and customers. Non-profit organisations generally have to depend on the donor agencies and therefore fail to attract a sizeable public relations budget. On the one hand, these organisations lack the resources to launch a successful public relations campaign and on the other the lack of knowledge and interest among general staff members makes it even harder for a public relations campaign to be developed or successfully launched. In this study, I used both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies to collect and analyse data. The data were collected from two non-profit organisations based in New Zealand working in the area of child welfare. The primary data were collected through semi-structured interviews and survey questionnaires. A single semi-structured interview was conducted with each team leader of the two selected organisations. However, this was like skimming the surface and in-depth interviews would have helped me to collect richer data. On the other hand the data collected was sufficient for this research and it helped me to create a holistic understanding of the topic. The findings of the research highlight that most non-profit organisations working in the area of child welfare find it hard to market themselves due to a lack of funds and employee involvement. Although the findings from the study are significant; caution is necessary in applying the results to other scenarios and in making generalizations. One of the key findings from this research is that both organisations did not use public relations as a strategy. Most decision related to public relations was made on random basis and no long term strategic plan was made to adopt public relations as a core strategy to build creditability among their stakeholders.

Abstract:
It has been widely accepted that profit maximisation the cornerstone of economic analysis. The prevalence of non profit maximising firms such as cooperatives, partnership and the increasing importance in stakeholders' interest has raised my interest in this topic. My thesis looks into the reasons that drive the prevalence of non-profit firms, such as the perception bias of managers, the special law and regulation in certain countries and the emphasis on the stakeholders' interests. I base my analysis mainly on the oligopoly model and provided analysis on how the market is like in non-profit maximising environment compared to profit maximsing environment. I find out that non-profit firm is not necessary less profitable under certain circumstance. First chapter introduces the related literature; second chapter focuses on the influence of managers' perception bias on firms' decision; chapter three applied a two stage model to see how for-profit firms and non-profit firms react under uncertainty and last chapter focus on the governance of cooperative/partnership.

Abstract:

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The non-profit sector has grown and changed substantially since its origins more than 2 000 years ago. At present there is an increase in organised voluntary activity around the globe, which reflects a set of social and technological changes, as well as an increasing lack of confidence in the ability of the state to render certain vital services. NPOs that do not work in the fields of housing, the aged, HIV/AIDS and education, for instance organisations doing missionary work, are faced with the difficult task of procuring funds within this highly competitive environment. The overall purpose of relationship marketing is customer retention and development, not simply a series of transactions. With this in mind, it seems that relationship marketing has an important role to play in the non-profit sector. Why is it then so difficult to "sell brotherhood like soap"? To answer this question tools have been developed and adapted to fit the non-profit sector. Donor behaviour plays a crucial role in the survival of an organisation and insights into behaviour can give the organisation an edge over its competitors. In the case of this study the research problem relates to the identification of the dimensions impacting on donor behaviour in religious (Christian) organisations. A conceptual model of donor behaviour in religious non-profit organisations was developed and used for the eventual formulation of 23 hypotheses to guide the study and to represent the possible relationships. For the statistical analysis it was deemed necessary to revise both the model and the proposed hypotheses. The model was split into three models: - Perceptions of non-profit organisations; - Individual donor characteristics; and - Donor perceptions of the non-profit organisation. A thorough overview of the literature was undertaken, mainly to investigate the nature of the non-profit sector in general as well as in South Africa, its marketing and behaviour of its donors. The conceptual model that was developed through the literature study was used to develop a measuring instrument specifically for this study for collecting primary data. It was empirically tested in a religious (Christian) non-profit organisation in South Africa by collecting primary data. Questionnaires were mailed to its whole donor database. The questionnaires returned were captured with the aid of an Excel spreadsheet and merged with data from the donor database. The first step was to assess the validity and reliability of the measurement instrument used. Next, an exploratory factor analysis was done to identify the unique factors evident in the study data. The next step entailed testing the proposed theoretical model by means of the "Structural Equation Modelling" technique. The results of the data analysis led to the creation of a model suitable for the management of the donors of a Christian missionary organisation. This study is a pioneering study of donor behaviour in South African religious non-profit organisations, in particular Christian organisations. It is clear from the results that donors of religious organisations react differently than donors of other non-profit organisations and therefore that different approaches are needed to secure Christian donor loyalty and trust.

Abstract:
This study aims to analyze and evaluate three non-profit organizations regarding how their sustainability accounting reports have changed and developed between year 2017 and year 2019. The study analyzes how parameters in the sustainability index have been taken into consideration to perceive which parameters are the three non-profits organization’s focal points. In addition, the study will analyze how sustainability accounting reports meet the stakeholder's information needs. Given the prevailing issues and purpose of the study, a qualitative method is relevant to this study. The selection of organizations is based on organizations' availability of sustainability reports for the assessment period. In this study, non-probability selection was chosen, where the selection was made through a preliminary investigation. The study is based on a secondary data method which is a flexible and appropriate approach.   This thesis consists of empirical studies that will help strengthen the quality of the study. The data collected in the empirical data have been analyzed on the basis of the theoretical frame of reference. Frame of reference in this thesis is based on sustainable development, sustainability accounting, Venn diagram of sustainable development, triple bottom line and stakeholder theory. The empirical data in this thesis consists of Red Cross Sweden, Save the Children Sweden and WWF.   Based on the result of this thesis, the parameters under dimensions, environmental responsibility, social responsibility and financial responsibility in each organization have similarities. For example, the environmental requirements for purchasing and procurement are seen in both the Red Cross' and Save the Children's sustainability reports. Another example of similarity that can be seen in all three organizations' sustainability reports is gender equality and diversity. The organization's focus for different parameters in sustainability reports depends on the type of business they have. The development of each organization's sustainability reports in 2017 has been remarkable. Prior to 2017, Save the Children was a pioneer in presenting sustainability reports. While the Red Cross and WWF began to present sustainability reports in 2017. According to their stakeholder analysis, all three respective organizations have included all parameters that are important to their stakeholders. Through their dialogues with both internal and external stakeholders, the respective organizations meet the stakeholders' need for information.

Abstract:
This paper investigated trends in social entrepreneurship within non-profit organisations (NPOs). It was inspired by a survey conducted by Trialogue, a non-profit research organisation that surveys corporate social investment in South Africa. The survey showed a significant number of Non-profit organisations (69%) are moving toward developing social enterprise due to issues of sustainability. The research sought to ascertain what are the causes for the trend. The method of sampling used was non-probability, purposeful sampling to select 12 organisations from the available population. An exploratory qualitative study was conducted via face-to-face interviews with 12 organisations and 14 respondents. The transcripts of each were manually reviewed line-by-line for common themes to compare and generate results. The study was undertaken to better understand what motivated NPOs to social entrepreneurship and how they identified and exploited opportunities; distributed revenues and what form of relationship was created with the parent organization. The study reviewed theoretical models and selected a best-fit model of the Opportunity Creation Process which had to be modified to suit the trends in thought that arose from the study. The findings showed that funding challenges of the parent NPO and limited access to funds were key features likely to illustrate when an NPO will move into social entrepreneurship. The research concludes with evidence demonstrating that NPOs are not always willing participants in the social enterprise game, but are forced to discover opportunities to prove to funders that they are seeking means to be sustainable, with varying degrees of success. The form of social enterprise they select is often determined by the centrality of the NPOs mission to that of the social enterprise.

Abstract:
In 2015, Swedish Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs) served as the backbone of society, assisting 162.877 immigrant refugees escaping conflict zones throughout the world. As the thrive to include newcomer refugees in the Swedish society continues, non-profits are facing numerous of challenges such as operating in highly competitive environments marked by shrinking grant budgets and increased pressure to provide long-term impact. To achieve optimal NPO organizational sustainability, the non-profit sector must therefore interact and learn how to address the aforementioned difficulties collectively. Furthermore, existing studies emphasizes the scarcity of research on learning through non-profit collaboration, as the knowledge management and organizational learning field has mostly concentrated on the for-profit sector rather than the non-profit sector. To fill this research gap, this study uses a qualitative approach to investigate NPO perceptions of interorganizational learning through collaboration, conducting ten semi-structured interviews with NPO employees working with newcomer refugees in Sweden. The results indicated that the NPOs’ learning outcomes connected to the need for collective sensemaking of the Swedish government’s new migration policies, which had a significant influence on the target groups prospects of remaining in Sweden. Moreover, the NPOs learned from unsuccessful collaborations, resulting in changes to the organizations’ routines and processes aimed at improving future collaborations. As a consequence, learning outcomes were incorporated into their organizational memory through digital Knowledge Management Systems such as Google Drive and Rise-Up. They were, however, heavily reliant on people’s willingness to share tacit and explicit knowledge, as well as an organizational culture that encouraged them to knowledge share. As a result, most non-profits either did not upgrade these systems at all or did not have the technological infrastructure to do so in the first place.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of the study is to explain what affect customers’ relationship commitment to non-profits organizations. Methodology This study employs the quantitative approach with the help of webbased survey. Findings Relationship commitment has two direct antecedents, namely trust and relationship benefits. Communication between organization and customers has an indirect effect on relationship commitment which is partially mediated by trust. The relationships between constructs are controlled by the length of the membership in the organization. Research limitations/implications The study has several managerial implications. Thus, the established associations between relationships constructs adopted from for-profit industries do not fully explain the drivers of customers’ relationship commitment in the non-profit sector. The special attention should be payed to establishing the successful two-ways communication with the customers in order to facilitate commitment. Theoretically-wise, the study re-examines the earlier established model in the new context and by doing so introduces the new model which is relevant for the context of customers of non-profit organizations. The study however has some limitation such as an application of convenience sample, a limited availability of the survey, a possible language barrier. Originality/value The study proposes the new model which explains commitment and its antecedents in the context of customers’ relationship with non-profit organizations. This thesis investigates the economic theories on the role on non-profit organizations, their creation, and factors for the size of the non-profit sector. An analytical approach was taken to determine what factors seem to affect the size of the non-profit sector. Firstly a literature review was conducted of the existing, and predominant economic theories relating to the role of the non-profit sector, and several hypotheses where suggested from the analysis of past research. Then an empirical model was created to test the validity of the hypotheses on a cross-national sample, in an effort to deduce what factors affect the size of the non-profit sector.

Abstract:
Given increased competition with for-profit firms, the issue of the comparative advantage of non-profit organizations is renewed. While non-profits may want to differentiate themselves when faced with additional non-profit competition, it is unclear whether they would want to differentiate themselves or converge towards for-profit competitors. This paper addresses this issue by considering the different financing models, human resource systems, and objectives of non-profit organizations, as compared to for-profits, in the mixed industry of microfinance. In my first essay, I utilize an analytical model, where firms can choose profit status, sources of financing, and the borrowers they target with a given interest rate and loan size. I find that non-profit and for-profit organizations will segment the market, partly due to differences in profit status and partly due to differences in the sources of financing. I find support for the hypotheses using a large-scale panel dataset of microfinance organizations in Latin America. The second essay focuses on a particular element of the business model considered in the first essay: deposit-taking. I show that non-profits that begin taking deposits only benefit financially if they also begin making larger loans. This suggests that changes in non-profits' activities may require a change in positioning to improve financial performance. More broadly, it supports the literature on the importance of fit between product market strategy and business model, which suggests extra managerial attention be paid to whether and how to adopt activities that change the business model. The third essay considers another key distinguishing element between the non-profit and for-profit business model: the incentive and reward systems for employees. I merge the panel dataset with a cross-sectional survey on the dimensions along which the firms incentivize employees, and develop a proxy for the level of bonus pay. The results suggest that more mission-oriented firms reward employees on more dimensions, but with lower average salary and a smaller amount of bonus pay. This suggests that incentive pay may be used as a signal in more mission-oriented firms to clarify the expectations of employee behavior, whereas it is used to directly motivate and incentivize employees in less mission-oriented firms. The three essays of my dissertation combine to examine the characteristics that distinguish non-profit organizations, even in industries in which they co-exist with for-profits. The results shed light on these increasingly common mixed industries, as well as provide insight into business model competition and the fit between elements that make up a business model.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Despite the importance of non-profit sector in the economy, little analysis has been made as to whether the behaviour of such sector differs from that of for-profit sector. To so do, we examine a duopoly model of competition to compare the equilibrium outcomes that arise in markets in which two for-profit organizations compete with those equilibrium outcomes that arise in the markets in which a for-profit organization competes with a non-profit organization. The results seem to suggest that competition between a for-profit and a non-profit organization may be detrimental to the for-profit organization, depending on the nature of competition. However, it always welfare improving for consumers and the society as a whole, due to the increase on equilibrium output and the decrease on equilibrium prices. Finally, the results also seem to suggest that any eventual tax exemptions given to the non-profit organization do not generate unfair competition.

Non–profit organizations, including social welfare services, culture and art groups, medical care institution, environment protection groups, law service volunteer teams, charitable institutions and a variety of nonprofit foundations have been grown substantially in the past decade not only in terms of quantity but also the influence of sociality. Due to bureaucracy and inefficiency of the authority, diversified sociality, and the raising consciousness of the public, which are not handled properly by Government in accordance with the ever-changing sociality and the public, the nonprofit organization raises and operates by it’s own rule.Non–profit organizations, the so-called “third party” which are independent of the public party and the private party, pursuing public benefit and are more efficient than the bureaucracy of Government. In the era of untruthful relationship between people and Government, the “third party” begins to engage in fulfill the gap of social requirement between people and Government, help terminating estrangement and establishing close relationship between both parties, in order to found a more wonderful sociality. The characteristics of Web 2.0 promote effective communication and require low skill. These characteristics are niche for nonprofit organizations (NPOs). According to the relevant studies, however, most NPOs can’t effectively communicate with potential supporters by making the best use of the Internet. Hence, the study aims to explore whether and how advocacy NPOs utilize Web 2.0 and the efficacy. The study samples advocacy NPOs and their websites. By snowball sampling, content analysis and in-depth interviews, the results show that these NPOs have been apparently utilizing Web 2.0 technologies as one of their tools to disseminate information and connect potential supporters. At first, most observed NPOs didn’t adopt Web 2.0 systematically, but they have found strengths of Web 2.0 from their practice, developed many strategies and succeeded in building relationship with their potential supporters. Additional findings indicate that the NPOs which use their websites to disseminate information gradually replace blogs with Facebook. Blogs, however, remain useful for the NPOs due to its advantage on information storage and information arrangement. Finally, although relevant research shows that most NPOs can’t utilize Facebook to communicate, our findings support that advocacy NPOs utilize Facebook to communicate and advocate. The research findings contribute to suggestions on NPOs and governments in practice. NPOs should improve their website’s content, develop integrated strategy to coordinate online and offline activities, enable their websites for fundraising and communication. In addition, government should increase convenience and creativity of their websites by applying Web 2.0 technology and disseminate information by social networking sites.

The phenomenon of social entrepreneurship and social enterprises is everywhere, but most of people were much more concerned in social entrepreneurship than social entrepreneurs. Also, few of researchers discussed the topic, leaving gap to explain and predict. This research is based on the interpretative qualitative research, choosing two cases, profit and non-profit organizations are included. We discussed the interpretation of social entrepreneurship from both sides, using open and semi-structured in-depth interviews and obtained more than 20 copies of the interview text, study diary and research reflection and meanwhile connecting with the observations through participating organization activities and secondary data. We could analysis the topic through theme analysis method. Compared to traditional entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship considers the social elements of internal and external stakeholders in some important aspects, such as opportunity searching, resource acquisition, innovation, risk-taking and so on. The characteristics of social elements including: (1) Understanding their ability and conscience, enhancing the professional level, obtaining approval, improving the affordability; (2) Considering the ending as the beginning and the coexistence of other internal and external stakeholders, social entrepreneurs are more willing to find opportunities at market which were neglected but having strong positive externalities. They tend to regard a crisis as a chance; (3) Social entrepreneurs are willing to listen to information from employees in the organization. Employees sometimes bring social news which were outside of the industry, proposing the opportunity to impact the corporate culture, and therefore shareholders and stakeholders are the engine of influence others to have social entrepreneurship; (4) Social entrepreneurs may venture a new undertaking for balancing the status and rights of old and new stakeholders, lowering the tradeoff of value capture and value creation; (5) In order to expand its influence, social entrepreneurs do not be limited by the efficiency of the public sector and poor communication caused by information asymmetry. They seek to cooperate with the school or the local community. Using direct actions to attract the public and spread the creative idea of changing.

If an organisation does not seek to make monetary profit, what does it do and why does it exist? A not-for-profit organisation, or non-profit organisation, exists to provide value to a particular constituency and, generally, it provides this value by offering a set of services. Examples of not-for-profit organisations are: public schools, most colleges and universities, government agencies, social and human service organisations, some hospitals, religious organisations, sports clubs, community theatres, symphony groups, charities and others. Chapter 1 is a summary of the problem statement, methodology and research in this paper. Chapter 2 will discuss definitions and strategies. Chapter 3 examines for-profit organisations, their management characteristics and the strategies they apply. Chapter 4 goes on to discuss not-for-profit organisations and how they are managed. Lastly, Chapter 5 reviews the findings in the previous chapters and makes recommendations. As the cases will reveal, the differences between not-for-profit and for-profit "business decision making" are sometimes subtle, but it is clear that not-for-profit organisations cannot blindly apply business methods and principles without appropriate adaptation. This necessary caution applies to a wide variety of decisions which include pricing, investment of funds, the outsourcing of tasks, deciding whether to undertake a commercial venture, deciding whether to collaborate with a business corporation, determining employee compensation levels and investment in fund raising operations. Conventional business principles help organisations to run efficiently and effectively, but . they are built on the underlying assumption that the purpose of the organisation is to make as much money as possible. Not-for-profit organisations must also be efficient and effective in their use of resources, but they must do so in a way that maximises the impact of their social missions, and at the same time ensures their financial survival.
