Abstract:
Chapter 4 begins to connect the changes in finance to changes in the global economy and the national and global distribution of wealth. The financiers, rich though they have become, remain agents of the richer still families of dynastic wealth. Although family business sounds old-fashioned or quaint, it is demonstrated that dynastic wealth still dominates the world economy, even in highly developed economies. Through interlocking directorates, families continue to maintain control despite the rise of distributed shareholder capitalism and large non-family investment pools such as pension funds. These families also maintain a broader form of social and political control through their cultivated connections.

Abstract:
This article begins with an examination of definitions of family firms. The debate about what constitutes a family firm is every bit as complex as the definition of an entrepreneur. This article explores the range of definitions but shows that any definition needs to be interpreted in its economic, social, institutional, and cultural context. An explanation for the multiplicity of definitions is provided in in this article, which explores the diversity in scale, scope, organization, and longevity of family firms, and shows differences through time in different societies and between families. The article also demonstrates the strong path dependency of family firm development, with change (or lack of it) underpinned by the foundations of the past. The article further explores research which compares the performance of family firms with non-family firms and this highlights the potential policy implications of family business research.

Abstract:
William Stout, a Lancaster ironmonger, was a Quaker and a lifelong bachelor. He and his sister and non-Quaker brothers represent a striking example of sibling support and harmonious interdependence. Most decisions by family members were taken collectively, after much discussion. William’s sister acted for many years as his housekeeper and assistant, and they boarded several young nephews and nieces in succession. The siblings and their widowed mother cooperated amicably, and William was often willing to defer to their wishes. Highly successful in business, he used his wealth to support his brother’s children and grandchildren. But relationships with the next generation proved more tricky, with their gratitude tempered by resentment at their dependence.

Abstract:
This book explains Indonesia’s complex legal system and how it works. Covering a wide range of substantive topics from public to private law, including commercial, criminal, and constitutional law, it is the first comprehensive survey of Indonesian law in English. Offering clear answers to practical problems of current law, each chapter sets out relevant laws and leading court decisions, accompanied by an explanation of how the law works in practice, with an analytical critique. The book begins with an account of Indonesia’s Constitution and the key state agencies, before moving to the lawmaking process, decentralization, the judicial system and court procedure, and the legal profession (advocates, notaries, and legal aid). Part II covers traditional customary law (adat), land law, and environmental law, including forest law. Part III focuses on criminal law and procedure, including investigation, arrest, trial, sentencing, and appeals. It also covers human rights law and the law on corruption. Part IV deals with civil law, and covers civil liability, contracts, companies and other business vehicles, labour, foreign investment, taxation, insolvency, banking, competition, and media law. The book concludes in Part V with an account of Indonesia’s complex family law and inheritance system for both Muslims and non-Muslims. The book has an extensive glossary of legal terms, and detailed tables of legislation and court decisions, designed as unique resources for lawyers, policymakers, and researchers.
