Threatened aboriginal cultures provide valuable criteria for fruitful criticism of the dominant Western cultural paradigm and perceptual model, which many take for granted as the inevitable path for humankind to follow. However, this Western model has proven itself to be imprecise and limiting. It obscures fundamental aspects of human nature, such as the mythical, religious dimension, and communication with the Cosmos. Modern technology, high-speed communication and mass media affect our ability to perceive reality and respond to it. Non-Western worldviews could help us to regain meaningful communication with Nature and to learn new ways of perceiving our world.

Embryogenic cultures of Araucaria angustifolia were induced from dominant and non-dominant zygotic embryos excised from immature seeds proceeding from three different genotypes and five harvest dates. Zygotic embryos were inoculated in inductive culture medium LP and BM supplemented with or without plant growth regulators 2,4-D (5 µM), BA (2 µM) and Kin (2 µM). The genotype of the mother tree and the developmental explant stage affected the induction frequency. In the maintenance phase, embryogenic cultures were maintained at continuous repetitive cell cycles every 20 days in semi-solid or liquid medium. In the maturation phase the culture medium was supplemented with different types and levels of growth regulators, osmotic agents, carbohydrates and derived. Embryogenic cultures inoculated in culture medium supplemented with PEG 3350 (6 and 9%), maltose (6 and 9%), plus BA and Kin (1 µM each) resulted in the progression of somatic embryos to globular and torpedo developmental stages.

The article analyzes the content of the Pope’s speeches discussing, reconstructing and interpreting the concept of two dominant western cultures and their mutual relationships to the perspective of Pope Benedict XVI, who calls them the culture of radical enlightenment and the culture of humanism that is open to transcendence. The article identifies fundamental contentious issues including: anthropological issues, human dignity, political anthropology, freedom, reason, its rationality, and the role of religion in the public sphere. Thus, the article provides a positive answer to the question of whether the perspective of the clash of cultures outlined by Samuel Huntington can be cognitively used in interpreting the contrast of cultures presented from the perspective of Pope Benedict XVI. However, contrary to Huntington, who describes the clash of western cultures with other, non-western cultures, Pope Benedict XVI claims that there is a clash between two dominant western cultures.

Abstract Umbilical cord blood (UCB) as a stem cell source for allogeneic transplantation is limited by the cell dose a single unit can provide to adult recipients. One approach to overcoming the cell dose limitation is the use of two UCB units. However, murine and human clinical studies have shown that after infusion of two UCB units, one unit dominates as early as 3 weeks post engraftment. To understand the biology that determines the engraftment of each donor, we investigated the effect of dual donor competition on hematopoietic progenitors from 3 unrelated units and 2 units from dizygotic twins during methylcellulose and LTC-IC co-culture of equal numbers of mononuclear cells from each unit pair. Donor chimerism was evaluated in primary CFU (t=0) and secondary CFU from LTC-IC cultures (weeks 4 and 5) by PCR of informative polymorphic short tandem repeats (STR analysis). In 10 units analyzed, the CFU frequency per 100,000 mononuclear cells was 152 ± 18 and the LTC-IC frequency was 1 in 20,000 ± 5.81. The mononuclear cell composition was CD34: 1.07 ±.29%; CD3: 56.3 ± 4.1%; CD33: 17.4 ± 3.4%; and CD19: 8.42 ± 1.1%. In 4 UCB pairs, the unit with the higher primary CFU frequency dominated by an average ratio of 2:1 based on STR analysis of the primary CFU co-culture. In secondary CFU derived from the LTC-IC cultures, the skewing progressively became more pronounced with the same unit identified in primary culture predominating by an average ratio of 7:1. In mixed cultures, the absolute number of primary CFU from the dominant units increased by 15 ± 2% over the number from individual units while CFU from the non-dominant units decreased by 37 ± 4%. Interestingly, there was no dominant unit in primary CFU cultures from one set of dizygotic twins and the CFU number from each unit increased by 30% in the mixed culture. This set of twins emerged with a dominant unit during LTC-IC culture, yielding a donor ratio of 2:1. We found no correlation between the predominating unit and the CD34 percentage or LTC-IC frequency. However, in all 5 dual UCB experiments, the unit with the higher CD3 percentage dominated in primary CFU cultures and was intensified during LTC-IC culture. These results demonstrate an early and progressive dominance of one donor based on CFU analysis during mixed UCB culture. The correlation with CD3 content suggests both an immediate and protracted T-cell effector mechanism even though the LTC-IC culture does not promote T-cell proliferation. Additionally, the increase in the absolute cell number of the dominant unit may suggest a graft vs. graft progenitor cell growth-stimulatory effect which may explain the observed more rapid engraftment of the dominant unit after dual UCB transplantation. Thus, immediate UCB competition predicts the dominant unit during in vitro culture and presumably mimics the process occurring after clinical dual UCB transplantation.

Purpose The paper investigates differences in the success of business process management (BPM) initiatives and their connection with organizational culture. The purpose of this paper is to identify propositions on characteristics of BPM initiative that are favorable for its success according to dominant organizational culture. Therefore, the authors’ aim was to identify connections of organizational commitment to BPM and dimensions of business process orientation (BPO) with dominant organizational culture. Design/methodology/approach As a research design, the authors used a questionnaire to collect data on the BPM adoption practices of organizations in Austria, Croatia and Slovenia with more than 50 employees. BPM adoption was measured with BPO and organizational culture with Competing Values Framework (CVF). Non-parametric tests have been applied for the analysis. On this survey data, the authors conducted statistical tests to identify those factors that discriminate successful from unsuccessful BPM initiatives. Findings The study revealed empirical insights about characteristics of successful BPM initiatives in different organizational cultures. There are several statistically significant differences with respect to the success of BPM adoption. The chance of success appears to be higher: when the BPM initiative is rolled out in the entire organization if the organization has Clan, Market or Hierarchy culture; when the BPM is run on a continuous basis in Hierarchy culture and repeatedly in Adhocracy culture; when a top-down approach is used in organizations with Market or Hierarchy dominant culture; when the BPM initiative has a strategic role and formal responsibilities are defined in Clan and Hierarchy cultures. Originality/value The authors’ empirical findings provide the basis for the formulation of detailed propositions on the interaction of various factors and their impact on BPM adoption in connection to organizational culture. In this way, the authors’ contribution is situated in the inductive research cycle and informs theory building for BPM adoption.

AbstractIn critiquing the humanism of the Anthropocene, scholars have proposed multiple “-cenes” of their own (i.e. the Capitalocene, Plantationocene, and Necrocene). However, authors often consider these formations in isolation rather than considering the intersection between them. To address this oversight, I propose the use of musical artefacts as a site of examination as the forces behind these “-cenes” embed traces of themselves into these recordings and performances. Power electronics, a subgenre of noise music, provides an exceptionally fruitful area of research because of its tendency towards disruption as both a musical and ideological gesture. This inclination creates space for artists to evoke non-dominant narratives, allowing for new forms of interaction between “-cenes” to emerge. By way of example, I analyse the album The History of AIDS by power electronics artist Prurient. Utilizing Deleuze and Guattari’s notion of the rhizome as a framework for interaction, the album evokes the sexual and racial politics within the Capitalocene, Necrocene, and Plantationocene, allowing space for audiences to consider all three formations simultaneously. This manoeuvring between various “-cenes” highlights the ways in which music acts as a “-ceneic” meeting ground and implies new directions for research.

<p>The aim of the study was to investigate the dominant and preferred organisational culture at a higher education institution in South Africa and how organisational culture influences the organisational behaviour. The study employed a quantitative research design and 30 employees were randomly selected from two groups of non-academic and academic staff members of a selected school at the institution. A structured questionnaire was utilised to solicit information regarding the dominant and preferred organisational culture at the institution from the participants. The Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS) version 2013 was used to determine the preferred and existing culture through mean scores. The results revealed that a role culture was dominant in the institution whilst employees preferred a support culture. The study further revealed that organisational culture has a significant impact on numerous organisational processes, employees as well as organisational performance. In addition, the results showed that if employees have shared norms and are supported by the organisation, they can increase their performance towards achieving overall organisational goals. Thus, from the findings, the study recommends policy makers and decision makers in organisations to adopt support culture through providing support to their employees to achieve both personal and organisational goals. </p>

Aim. To use earlier developed method of intermicrobial «self-non-self» discrimination in «dominant-associant» pair for the assessment of foreignness of probiotic cultures of Escherichia coli M-17 (with pathogenicity island) and E. coli LEGM-18 (without pathogenicity island). Materials and methods. As dominants reference and clinical strains of bifidobacteria were used in the work, cultures of E. coli M-17 and E. coli LEGM-18 were taken as associants, differing in the presence of genes which code colibactin. Detection of the phenomenon of microbial discrimination was conducted according to the developed algorithm (Bukharin O.V., Perunova N.B., 2011) based on the principle of metabolite induction as a result of preliminary coincubation of dominants (bifidobacteria) with supernatant of associants and the formation of feed back in «dominant-as-sociant» pair. Special growth properties, biofilm formation, and antilysozyme activity served as biological characteristics of investigated coliform bacteria. Results. Testing of E. coli M -17 culture revealed depression of biological properties under investigation and it was estimated as «non-self» possibly due to the presence of pathogenicity island whereas E. coli LEGM-18 (without this fragment) sharply strengthened its biological characteristics and was subjected to assessment as «self». Conclusion. Use of intermicrobial «self-non-self» discrimination in «dominant-associant» pair is promising as basic method when selecting probiotic strains and cultures for creation of new symbiotic compositions and is suitable for quality control of probiotic products.

The temporal variation and spatial distribution of plankton ciliate communities were investigated in Shen’ao Bay, South China Sea. In all, 35 species belonging to 17 genera and 7 orders were identified. The number of ciliate species was lower in spring than in summer, whereas ciliate abundance was higher in spring than in summer. Spatially, the number of ciliate species and ciliate abundance were higher in the oyster–algae mixed culture area and non-aquaculture area, and lower in the caged fish culture area. Multivariate and univariate analyses demonstrated that ciliate communities were associated with environmental factors (e.g. temperature, chlorophyll (Chl)-a, nutrient levels). In addition, two dominant species, namely Mesodinium rubrum and Tintinnopsis beroidea, were significantly positively correlated with Chl-a. Three dominant species, namely Strombidium globosaneum, Tintinnopsis minuta and Strombidium conicum, showed more sensitivity to dissolved oxygen, pH and chemical oxygen demand, whereas Tintinnopsis parvula and Tintinnopsis chinglanensis were significantly related to NO2–. Ciliate species diversity, species evenness and species richness were higher in the oyster–algae mixed culture area and non-aquaculture area and lower in the caged fish culture area. Therefore, the results of this study suggest that the ciliate community is significantly correlated with its aquatic habitat and the dominant species can be considered a favourable bioindicator of the marine water environment.

Microcystis aeruginosa is the dominant alga forming cyanobacteria blooms, the growth of which is limited by available nutrients. Thus, it is necessary to study cyanobacteria blooms and explore the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa under different nutrient conditions. In this paper, we take Microcystis aeruginosa, including toxic Freshwater Algae Culture of Hydrobiology Collection (FACHB)-905 and non-toxic FACHB-469 strains, into account. The strains were cultured using a simulation device under different nutrient conditions. Ultraviolet spectra, three-dimensional fluorescence spectra, and kinetic parameter indicators of the two species are studied. Compared to FACHB-469, the results show that the specific growth rate of FACHB-905 is much higher, in particular, FACHB-905 is the dominant species under low nutrient conditions. Furthermore, the UV spectral characteristics indicate that the molecular weight of dissolved organic matter in the culture tank of toxic FACHB-905 is greater than that of FACHB-469. Additionally, the humification index of toxic FACHB-905 is slightly higher as well, which suggests that it is more stable in the presence of dissolved organic matter during blooms. Therefore, the toxic Microcystis strain is more likely to become the dominant species in water blooms under lower eutrophic conditions and water blooms formed by the toxic Microcystis strain may be more difficult to recover from.

Abstract Western-derived maker movements and their associated fab labs and hackerspaces are being lauded by some as a global industrial revolution, responsible for groundbreaking digital “entanglements” that transform identities, practices and cultures at an unprecedented rate (Anderson 2014; Hills 2016). Assertions proliferate regarding the societal and entrepreneurial benefits of these “new” innovations, with positive impacts ascribed to everything, from poverty to connectivity. However, contradictory evidence has started to emerge, suggesting that a heterogeneous set of global cultural practices have been homogenized. This paper employs a materialist genealogical framework to deconstruct three dominant narratives about information technologies, which we call “technomyths” in the tradition of McGregor et al. After outlining the maker movement, its assumptions are examined through three lesser-cited examples: One Laptop per Child in Peru, jugaad in India and shanzhai copyleft in China. We then explore two preceding technomyths: Open Source and Web 2.0. In conclusion, we identify three key aspects as constitutive to all three technomyths: technological determinism of information technologies, neoliberal capitalism and its “ideal future” subjectivities and the absence and/or invisibility of the non-Western.

Microbiological strategies are currently being considered as methods for reducing the ethanol content of wine. Fermentations started with a multistarter of three non-Saccharomyces yeasts (Metschnikowia pulcherrima (Mp), Torulaspora delbrueckii (Td) and Zygosaccharomyces bailii (Zb)) at different inoculum concentrations. S. cerevisiae (Sc) was inoculated into fermentations at 0 h (coinoculation), 48 h or 72 h (sequential fermentations). The microbial populations were analyzed by a culture-dependent approach (Wallerstein Laboratory Nutrient (WLN) culture medium) and a culture-independent method (PMA-qPCR). The results showed that among these three non-Saccharomyces yeasts, Td became the dominant non-Saccharomyces yeast in all fermentations, and Mp was the minority yeast. Sc was able to grow in all fermentations where it was involved, being the dominant yeast at the end of fermentation. We obtained a significant ethanol reduction of 0.48 to 0.77% (v/v) in sequential fermentations, with increased concentrations of lactic and acetic acids. The highest reduction was achieved when the inoculum concentration of non-Saccharomyces yeast was 10 times higher (107 cells/mL) than that of S. cerevisiae. However, this reduction was lower than that obtained when these strains were used as single non-Saccharomyces species in the starter, indicating that interactions between them affected their performance. Therefore, more combinations of yeast species should be tested to achieve greater ethanol reductions.

Tonal schemata are shaped by culture-specific music exposure. The acquisition process of tonal schemata has been delineated in Western mono-musical children, but cross-cultural variations have not been explored. We examined how Japanese children acquire tonal schemata in a bi-musical culture characterized by the simultaneous, and unbalanced, appearances of Western (dominant) music along with traditional Japanese (non-dominant) music. Progress of this acquisition was indexed by gauging children’s sensitivities to musical scale membership (differentiating scale-tones from non-scale-tones) and differences in tonal stability among scale tones (differentiating the tonic from another scale tone). Children (7-, 9-, 11-, 13-, and 14-year-olds) and adults judged how well two types of target tones (scale tone vs. non-scale tone; tonic vs. non-tonic) fit a preceding Western or traditional Japanese tonal context. Results showed that even 7-year-olds showed sensitivity to Western scale membership while sensitivity to Japanese scale membership did not appear until age nine. Also, sensitivity to the tonic emerged at age 13 for both types of melodies. These results suggest that even though they are exposed to both types of music simultaneously from birth, Japanese children begin by acquiring the tonal schema of the dominant Western music and this age of acquisition is not delayed relative to Western mono-musical peers.

This study attempts to establish a significant relationship between the prevailing organizational culture and the dominant work values of faculty members in three higher education institutions in Bulacan, Philippines—Centro Escolar University, La Consolacion University Philippines, and Baliuag University—in the first semester of academic year 2015-2016 with the view of crafting an enhancement program on organizational culture. Respondents answered questions on the organizational culture and their dominant work values and how these two factors interact. Findings show a strong organizational culture pervading the three institutions and the faculty putting a high premium on achievement, continuous learning in the work place, leadership of their superiors and being able to help others in the performance of their duties and responsibilities. The study recommends motivating the faculty to pursue post-graduate degrees in their area of specialization and for the institutions to conduct seminar-workshops on professed work values and prevailing organizational culture towards creating a work culture that fosters achievement, continuous learning, and supportive relationships among administrators, faculty and non-teaching personnel.

Although the UK's enterprise culture emanates from the Thatcher era, critiques of current (and proposed) industrial policies and initiatives make the observation that the current Blairite enterprise policies are remarkably similar in their ideological underpinning to those of the Thatcherite 1980s. The purpose of this paper is to provide a conceptual explanation for two seemingly irreconcilable phenomena: the persistence of the enterprise culture as a dominant UK model for economic development against the very limited success this model has enjoyed in achieving its objectives. To do so the authors first explore the concept of culture and then develop an ideal typology of the broad bundle of ideas and ideologies that have come to be known as the ‘enterprise culture’. This is deconstructed to test its rigour and to explore paradox and appropriateness as a contemporary economic development model. Broadly, they conclude that the failure of enterprise culture policies to impact upon the life and work of the small firm owner-manager are culturally-based, due, not least, to substantive differences in the material ‘ways of doing’ ascribed to enterprise adherents and small firm owner-managers. Given that entrepreneurship, as an approach to business, has also long been recommended as a cure for the ills of larger firms, particularly by government agencies, the coherence of the enterprise culture paradigm stretches beyond the small firm sector. Furthermore, the authors hope to contribute to the wider debate concerning the impact of management cultures on organizational performance and, in particular, their relationship with non-managerial cultures in the surrounding society, including the political and rhetorical spheres.

Therefore, the author proposes interculturalism as a policy for the multicultural campus because it values equitable treatment of all cultures. Recent years have witnessed an influx of international students into New Zealand's higher education institutions. The author asks whether these institutions have adequate strategies to accommodate the increasing cultural diversity on campus. Through a comparative analysis of multiculturalism and interculturalism, the author sees interculturalisation as an emancipatory process that should be supported, as it emphasises non-discriminative cultural reciprocity based on equality and respect.

Abstract This study examines the relationship between organizational culture and financial performance of high Medicaid census (70% or higher) nursing homes (NHs). Based on the Competing Values Framework, there are four types of organizational culture: clan culture (friendly working environment); adhocracy culture (dynamic/creative working environment); market culture (results-based organization); and hierarchy culture (formalized/structured work environment). This study used facility survey data from approximately 324 nursing home administrators (30% response rate) from 2017- 2018, merged with secondary data from LTCFocus, Area Health Resource File, and Medicare Cost Reports. The dependent variable consisted of the operating margin, while the independent variable comprised type of organizational culture. Control variables were organizational (ownership, chain affiliation, size, occupancy rate, and payer mix), and county-level factors (Medicare Advantage penetration, income, education, unemployment rate, poverty, and competition). Multivariable regression was used to model the relationship between organizational culture type and financial performance. Regression results show that compared to a market culture, a hierarchy culture was associated with an 11.8 % lower operating margin, a clan culture with a 10.6% lower operating margin, and a non-dominant culture with 11.4% lower operating margin. Organizational culture is associated with financial performance among high Medicaid facilities, with market cultures outperforming other organizational cultures. Given increasing competition in the nursing home market and declining resources for high Medicaid nursing homes, facilities with a more external orientation and focus on results may be able to perform better financially. Future research should examine the effect of organizational culture on quality of care.

In this paper we present results concerning how students in a Danish upper secondary school negotiate between sports culture and the prevailing norms of youth culture in a local school context. The study shows that it can be rather difficult for young people to combine sports culture with the local youth culture, because living a healthy and physically active life doesn’t fit very well with the prevailing norms of youth culture, which involve a dominant social arena characterized by parties and alcohol. By applying the figurational sociology of Norbert Elias, this article shows that being included in a sports figuration can result in exclusion from the youth figuration. Young athletic students are therefore in a constant process of negotiation, where they struggle to fit into both sport and non-sport related contexts, because it is important to belong within both. The study is based on 16 focus group interviews [N=120] conducted over four years in one Danish upper secondary school.

Abstract Contrastive pragmatics encourages a focus on variation in the ways that different groups enact their distinctive cultural values and norms. In New Zealand, Pākehā (European-based) ways of doing things are the norm, taken-for-granted and rarely questioned or even noted unless someone “breaks the rules”. For minority group members, however, including the indigenous Māori people, Pākehā norms are ever-present reminders of their non-dominant position. In the Māori workplace contexts that we have researched, awareness of these norms is particularly apparent and often attracts explicit comment. This paper explores the insights provided by comments from both Pākehā and Māori about workplace norms in New Zealand and the attitudes of some Māori employees to the hegemonic influence of Pākehā in workplace interaction, as well as providing some indications of seeds of change.

The article seeks to understand how climate change - a very expression of the nature and culture distinction - was incorporated into ifá and its annual prophecies.

The everyday uses of networked media technologies, especially social media, have revolutionized the classical model of top-down surveillance. This article sketches the contours of an emerging culture of interveillance where non-hierarchical and non-systematic monitoring practices are part of everyday life. It also introduces a critical perspective on how the industrial logics of dominant social media, through which interveillance practices are normalized, resonate with social forces already at play in individualized societies. The argument is developed in three steps. Firstly, it is argued that the concept of interveillance is needed, and must be distinguished from surveillance, in order to critically assess the everyday mutual sharing and disclosure of private information (of many different kinds). Secondly, it is argued that the culture of interveillance responds to the social deficit of recognition<em> </em>that characterizes highly individualized societies. Finally, it is argued that the culture of interveillance constitutes a defining instance and even represents a new stage of the meta-process of mediatization. The dialectical nature of interveillance integrates <em>and</em> reinforces the overarching ambiguities of mediatization, whereby the opportunities for individuals and groups to achieve growing freedom and autonomy are paralleled by limitations and dependences vis-à-vis media.

An individual's aging and human development always occur within a particular cultural context, but given the dominance of Western culture, the environment of non-Western societies is cross-cultural—it includes not only a non-Western dimension, but also Global and Western dimensions. The Western dimension is made up of those characteristics associated with Western societies, which are now found in non-Western societies, for example, Western education, healthcare services, and industrialization. The non-Western dimension, on the other hand, is made up of those attributes that are indigenous to the people, e.g., traditional healing. The Global dimension is characterized by standards that all societies should adhere to, e.g., human rights, equality for women, or by biological changes that are universally shared. Given this situation, six possible interaction patterns between the individual and his environment are mentioned as they have implications for different aging and human development pathways. These cross-cultural environmental dimensions also have implications for immigrants and refugees from non-Western societies in Western cultures and for ethnic minority group members in dominant cultures. This initial proposal may stimulate further detailed development.

AbstractThere is a growing perception that English used as a lingua franca does not need to resemble English as a native language, but can include a great deal of lexicogrammatical variation. However, a more fundamental matter is whether research articles written in English need to conform to the dominant linear, deductive, ‘Anglo’ pattern of text organization, or whether non-native English speakers should be free to transfer rhetorical patterns from their L1s into English, such as, e.g., an inductive, indirect, end-weighted form of argumentation, perhaps with a less-assertive conclusion. Hinds (1987) describes the latter style of writing as “reader-responsible,” as opposed to the “writer-responsible” Anglo-American style, arguing that it requires a great deal more inferential work on the part of the reader. Yet from a relevance theory perspective it appears unlikely that a culture would choose to impose unnecessary additional processing effort on readers. The perception of difficulty is an etic perspective: analysts from “writer-responsible” cultures imagine the processing effort that would be necessary in their culture to make sense of “reader-responsible” texts. Indirect, inductive rhetorical styles do not cause problems for readers accustomed to them. Given that most academic writing in English is for an international audience, non-native English-speaking researchers – and indeed native English speakers too – should be free to adopt a range of styles, or some sort of heterogeneous hybrid, depending on their perceptions of their readers’ expectations. A further issue is whether researchers who have reservations about ‘Anglo’ styles of writing, e.g. in the social sciences or literary and cultural theory, should encourage non-native English speakers to imitate the noun-heavy, nominalized, passivized, syntactically-complex style dominant in these fields.

Culture-based methods were employed to recover 3929 isolates of fungi from soils collected in May and July 2014 from mound nests of Formica ulkei and adjacent non-nest sites. The abundance, diversity, and richness of species from nest mounds exceeded those of non-mound soils, particularly in July. Communities of fungi from mounds were more similar to those from mounds than non-mounds; this was also the case for non-mound soils with the exception of one non-mound site in July. Species of Aspergillus, Paecilomyces, and Penicillium were dominant in nest soils and represented up to 81.8% of the taxa recovered. Members of the genus Aspergillus accounted for the majority of Trichocomaceae from nests and were represented almost exclusively by Aspergillus navahoensis and Aspergillus pseudodeflectus. Dominant fungi from non-mound sites included Cladosporium cladosporioides, Geomyces pannorum, and species of Acremonium, Fusarium, Penicillium, and Phoma. Although mound nests were warmer than adjacent soils, the dominance of xerotolerant Aspergillus in soils from mounds and the isolation of the majority of Trichocomaceae at 25 and 35 °C suggests that both temperature and water availability may be determinants of fungal community structure in nests of F. ulkei.

Microorganisms in geothermal springs can offer insights into the fundamental and applied study of extremophiles. However, low microbial abundance and culturing requirements limit the ability to analyze microbial diversity in these ecosystems. In this study, culture-dependent and culture-independent techniques were used to analyze sediment samples from the non-volcanic Tatta Pani hot springs in district Poonch of Azad Kashmir. Microbial composition, temperature gradient, and enrichment effects on rare taxa were evaluated. In total, 31 distinct bacterial phyla and 725 genera were identified from the non-enriched Tatta Pani hot spring sediment samples, and 33 distinct bacterial phyla and 890 genera from the enriched sediment samples. Unique phyla specimens from the enriched samples included Candidatus Cloacimonetes, Caldiserica, and Korarchaeota archaea. The enriched samples yielded specific microbiota including 805 bacteria and 42 archaea operational taxonomic units with 97% similarity, though decreased thermophilic microbiota were observed in the enriched samples. Microbial diversity increased as temperature decreased. Candidate novel species were isolated from the culture-dependent screening, along with several genera that were not found in the 16S amplicon sequencing data. Overall, the enriched sediments showed high microbial diversity but with adverse changes in the composition of relatively dominant bacteria. Metagenomic analyses are needed to study the diversity, phylogeny, and functional investigation of hot spring microbiota.

The present study concentrates on the potential of mass culture texts to impose specific metapragmatic stereotypes (Agha 2007) through humour on the wider audience. Metapragmatic stereotypes constitute speakers’ internal models of how language should or should not be used; such models guide speakers’ own language use and enable them to make evaluations about their own language behaviour or that of others. In this context, I explore the dominant metapragmatic stereotypes for humorous mass culture texts’ interpretation and perception. To this end, I analyse a humorous Greek TV advertisement of a telecommunications company. Drawing upon Coupland’s (2007) conceptualization of style and the General Theory of Verbal Humour (Attardo 2001), I intend to show that humour reflects, sustains, and reproduces the dominant metapragmatic stereotypes of linguistic homogenization and monolingualism (Blommaert & Rampton 2011). Then, I explore how the audience perceives the representation of stylistic choices in mass culture texts and more specifically in the analysed advertisement. My informants were 96 students of the last two grades of elementary school. The recipients’ responses show that their metapragmatic stereotypes are aligned with the dominant ones: they approach stylistic choices as strictly-defined systems used in specific social contexts and they expect the alignment of TV fictional characters with linguistic homogeneity. My findings suggest that humour stigmatises specific styles as well as that the audience perceives the respective (and reinforced through humour) metapragmatic stereotypes as guidelines for “correct” stylistic use. Furthermore, it seems that through humour such stereotypes usually go unnoticed in mass culture texts and may even become naturalised, as they are framed in a “trivial” and “non-serious” manner.

AbstractThe history of arms control efforts in the Middle East consists of numerous initiatives, but very limited results. From the first efforts to negotiate WMD limits and non-proliferation arrangements in the 1960s, through various regional initiatives, frameworks, proposals, discussions, and negotiations, the obstacles to agreement on mutual limitations remained dominant. Frequent discussions in the UN of a Middle East Nuclear Free Zone (MENWFZ), the multi-lateral Arms Control and Regional Security (ACRS) talks initiated during the 1991 Middle East Peace Conference, and the regional dimensions of global frameworks such as the NPT, CWC, and CTBT have all failed to produce results.Detailed analysis of these efforts highlights the impact of realist security-based factors, the structure and process of the interactions, as well as the cultural and domestic political dimensions. The existential conflicts, reflected in protracted territorial disputes and denials of legitimacy and compounded by a fundamental asymmetry, created a zero-sum framework in the region. The region is characterized by a great deal of instability and competition; this situation, in turn, contributed to the efforts to acquire WMD. In terms of domestic politics, the regional cooperation required for arms limitation is often inconsistent with the dominant articulated political interests and regime perspectives. In addition, misunderstandings and misperceptions frequently occur due to the complexities of cross-cultural communications in the Middle East. Numerous dialogues have not narrowed the gaps or transformed the zero-sum frameworks into cooperative ones. Hopes for the creation of successful regional mechanisms for limiting arms depend on overcoming the obstacles encountered in past efforts.

Advanced microfabrication technologies and biocompatible hydrogel materials facilitate the modeling of 3D tissue microenvironment. Encapsulation of cells in hydrogel microparticles offers an excellent high-throughput platform for investigating multicellular interaction with their surrounding microenvironment. Compartmentalized microparticles support formation of various unique cellular structures. Alginate has emerged as one of the most dominant hydrogel materials for cell encapsulation owing to its cytocompatibility, ease of gelation, and biocompatibility. Alginate hydrogel provides a permeable physical boundary to the encapsulated cells and develops an easily manageable 3D cellular structure. The interior structure of alginate hydrogel can further regulate the spatiotemporal distribution of the embedded cells. This review provides a specific overview of the representative engineering approaches to generate various structures of cell-laden alginate microparticles in a uniform and reproducible manner. Capillary nozzle systems, microfluidic droplet systems, and non-chip based high-throughput microfluidic systems are highlighted for developing well-regulated cellular structure in alginate microparticles to realize potential drug screening platform and cell-based therapy. We conclude with the discussion of current limitations and future directions for realizing the translation of this technology to the clinic.

The study aimed at determining the influence of organizational culture on the performance of microfinance institutions in Kenya. A descriptive cross-sectional survey design was adopted. Secondary data were collected from annual reports by the Association of Microfinance Institutions in Kenya and the Microfinance Rating Africa. Primary data were collected using structured questionnaire targeting the chief executive officer, human resource manager, and marketing manager. Data were analyzed using factor analysis and hierarchical regression. Our analysis identifies clan and hierarchy as the dominant cultural typologies in the microfinance industry. The results obtained demonstrate that organizational culture has a significant influence on non market performance. In addition, market culture is inversely associated with debt/equity ratio. We conclude that organizational culture is a major source of sustainable competitive advantage in the microfinance industry. Furthermore, we conclude that market culture promotes financial independence and sustainability in the long term.

Kinetics of mesophilic biohydrogen production from ozone-pretreated palm oil mill effluent (POME) using C. butyricum and C. acetobutylicum co-culture was investigated. All experiments were setup in 0.5-L batch reactors under mesophilic condition (37°C), pH 6, and POME concentration of 5,000-30,000 mg COD L-1. At the concentration of 15,000 mg COD L-1, maximum hydrogen production yield for non-ozone pretreated POME and ozone pretreated POME were 318 and 122 mL g-1 CODremoved, respectively. Acetic and butyric acids were dominant fermentation products in liquid phase. Ozone-pretreatment of POME showed no significant improvement on the hydrogen production by the co-culture.

Together, the articles in this special issue of the American Indian Culture and Research Journal offer a discussion of how Indigenous peoples have represented themselves and their communities in different periods and contexts, as well as through various media. Ranging across anthropology, art history, cartography, film studies, history, and literature, the authors examine how Native people negotiate with prominent images and ideas that represented Indians in the dominant culture and society in the United States and the Americas. These essays go beyond the problems of cultural appropriation by non-Indians to probe the myriad ways Native Americans and Indigenous people have challenged, reinforced, shifted, and overturned those representations.

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) and metagenomics revolutionized our capacity for analysis and identification of the microbial communities in complex samples. The existence of a blood microbiome in healthy individuals has been confirmed by sequencing, but some researchers suspect that this is a cell-free circulating DNA in blood, while others have had isolated a limited number of bacterial and fungal species by culture. It is not clear what part of the blood microbiota could be resuscitated and cultured. Here, we quantitatively measured the culturable part of blood microbiota of healthy individuals by testing a medium supplemented with a high concentration of vitamin K (1 mg/mL) and culturing at 43 °C for 24 h. We applied targeted sequencing of 16S rDNA and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) markers on cultured and non-cultured blood samples from 28 healthy individuals. Dominant bacterial phyla among non-cultured samples were Proteobacteria 92.97%, Firmicutes 2.18%, Actinobacteria 1.74% and Planctomycetes 1.55%, while among cultured samples Proteobacteria were 47.83%, Firmicutes 25.85%, Actinobacteria 16.42%, Bacteroidetes 3.48%, Cyanobacteria 2.74%, and Fusobacteria 1.53%. Fungi phyla Basidiomycota, Ascomycota, and unidentified fungi were 65.08%, 17.72%, and 17.2% respectively among non-cultured samples, while among cultured samples they were 58.08%, 21.72%, and 20.2% respectively. In cultured and non-cultured samples we identified 241 OTUs belonging to 40 bacterial orders comprising 66 families and 105 genera. Fungal biodiversity accounted for 272 OTUs distributed in 61 orders, 105 families, and 133 genera. Bacterial orders that remained non-cultured, compared to blood microbiota isolated from fresh blood collection, were Sphingomonadales, Rhizobiales, and Rhodospirillales. Species of orders Bacillales, Lactobacillales, and Corynebacteriales showed the best cultivability. Fungi orders Tremellales, Polyporales, and Filobasidiales were mostly unculturable. Species of fungi orders Pleosporales, Saccharomycetales, and Helotiales were among the culturable ones. In this study, we quantified the capacity of a specific medium applied for culturing of blood microbiota in healthy individuals. Other culturing conditions and media should be tested for optimization and better characterization of blood microbiota in healthy and diseased individuals.

The central concept of the article is performance as a form of expression specific to non-normative people. In confrontation with the oppressive discourse of dominant groups, the body of an excluded individual and its metamorphoses in themselves appear to be an alternative way of non-alienated expression. This phenomenon is discussed via the example of the practices of New York’s ballroom culture — primarily via the example of the film Paris is Burning from 1990, directed by Jennie Livingston. In the ballroom community, black and non-heteronormative Americans found a safe space for experiments with their identity, thanks to which they could experience a form of capitalistic success through an ephemeral performance. However, these practices, despite their apparent subversiveness and emancipatory potential, did not have the ambition to change the status quo. They only allowed experiencing the feeling of social advancement within the existing system. The story that ballroom culture members in the 1980s told about themselves through their own performances was part of a unique, non-verbal discourse of excluded groups, which developed a specific communication code based on the human body, its ways of moving and its aesthetic metamorphoses.

Many studies of structure in present-day Western news texts have shown that the dominant structure is the inverted pyramid, even if the use of a chronological narrative structure is acknowledged. However, the relevant literature has exclusively investigated Western news texts. In this study, we challenge the dominance of the inverted news structure by including a non-Western and less-investigated culture and ask whether textual structure of news texts can differ between cultural contexts. In total, 100 crime news texts from national Iranian and Dutch newspapers were analyzed for both the overall text and the journalists’ statements. Those texts that showed a hybrid structure (combining inverted pyramid and chronology) were subsequently studied qualitatively to understand how chronology is applied in them. News texts from the two cultures were significantly different in their structure. Qualitative analysis of the journalistic statements uncovered a quotation-based structure, a way of news writing in Iranian journalistic statements in which the journalist mainly narrates reporting eventualities that are new to Western eyes. The study offers implications for further ethnography of news and communication, suggesting that the role, pattern and effects of (journalistic) communication can be culture-specific.

The development of systematic mathematics requires writing, and hence a non-literate culture cannot be expected to advance mathematics beyond the stage of numeral words and counting. The hundreds of languages of the Australian aborigines do not seem to have included any extensive numeral systems. However, the common assertions to the effect that ‘Aborigines have only one, two, many’ derive mostly from reports by nineteenth century Christian missionaries, who commonly understood less mathematics than did the people on whom they were reporting. Of course, in recent decades almost all Aborigines have been involved with the dominant European-style culture of Australia, and even those who are not literate have mostly learned to use English-style numerals and to handle money. Similar qualifications should be understood when speaking of any recent primitive culture.

This essay is an exploration of the multiple cultural performances and performative Indigenous and non-Indigenous presences competing within events and erased by dominant narratives. The performance and performativity of race, class and culture for both black and white Australians in embodied performances and in accounts as a performative source of ideological meaning-making are critical factors within cross-cultural communications. The focus of this paper is on the dynamic between the Indigenous and non-Indigenous performances and presences within the enactment and documentation of two events separated by 100 years, a nineteenth century anecdote and a twentieth century „historical‟ event.

Selection of optimal control samples is crucial in expression profiling tumor samples. To address this issue, we performed microarray expression profiling of control samples routinely used in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma studies: human bronchial and tracheal epithelial cells, squamous cells obtained by laser uvulopalatoplasty and tumor surgical margins. We compared the results using multidimensional scaling and hierarchical clustering versus tumor samples and laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma cell lines. A general observation from our study is that the analyzed cohorts separated according to two dominant factors: “malignancy”, which separated controls from malignant samples and “cell culture-microenvironment” which reflected the differences between cultured and non-cultured samples. In conclusion, we advocate the use of cultured epithelial cells as controls for gene expression profiling of cancer cell lines. In contrast, comparisons of gene expression profiles of cancer cell lines versus surgical margin controls should be treated with caution, whereas fresh frozen surgical margins seem to be appropriate for gene expression profiling of tumor samples.

Rather than focus on effects, the isolatable and measureable outcomes of events and interventions, the papers assembled here offer different perspectives on the affective dimension of the meaning and politics of human/non-human relations. The authors begin by drawing attention to the constructed discontinuity between humans and non-humans, and to the kinds of knowledge and socialities that this discontinuity sustains, including those underpinned by nature-culture, subject-object, body-mind, individual-society polarities. The articles presented track human/non-human relations through different domains, including: humans/non-humans in history and animal welfare science (Fudge and Buller); the relationship between the way we live, the effects on our natural environment and contested knowledges about ‘nature’ (Whatmore); choreographies of everyday life and everyday science practices with non-human animals such as horses, meerkats, mice, and wolves (Latimer, Candea, Davies, Despret). Each paper also goes on to offer different perspectives on the human/non-human not just as division, or even as an asymmetrical relation, but as relations that are mutually affective, however invisible and inexpressible in the domain of science. Thus the collection contributes to new epistemologies/ontologies that undercut the usual ordering of relations and their dichotomies, particularly in that dominant domain of contemporary culture that we call science. Indeed, in their impetus to capture ‘affect’, the collection goes beyond the usual turn towards a more inclusive ontology, and contributes to the radical shift in the epistemology and philosophy of science’s terms of engagement.

The purpose of this research is to verify and estimate the correlation of Quality Service, that consist of Tangible, Reliability, Responsiveness, Assurance, Empathy, and Organizational Culture, that consist of Power Distance Index (PDI), Individualism Index, Masculinity Index, Uncertainty Avoidance Index (UAI) againstIncident Management’s Accuracy of Inconvenience Investigation, to identify dominant indicator of Quality Service variable and to identify dominant indicator of Organizational Culture Variable. This research use a quantitative descriptive approaching with the questioner as a primary data and literature comparation as asecondary data, and is a non-experimentally research. The model is developed, in this research is consist of two hypotheses that are examined by The Structural Equation Model (SEM) method using Lisrel 8.80 as an analysis tool. The sample that is used in this research is to the tune of 287 respondents from the Ministry of Finance with random sampling technique. The result of this research, based on fit model, obtain that all of the tvalue indicator of exogen variable are greater than ttable (N=287; α=0.05) as much as 1.97. In conclusion, this research isclearly state that H0 is reected and H1 is accepted, which means there is a significant correlation between Quality Service and Organizational Culture against Investigation Accuracy simultaneously. The study aims at: 1) describing the organization culture and performance, 2) finding out the simultaneuos influence of organization culture (variables of innovation, reward, cooperation or team work, result or outcome orientation and service orientation) on the performance. This is an explanatory research involving the employees of Polresta Malang as the analysis unit. The studi used proportional random sampling method and to collect data from 81 respondent a questionnaire was used The analysis technique used were multiple, partial regression, and determination. The result of study showed that: 1) simultaneously the organizational culture significantly influenced the performance, 2) partial(v the organization culture had also positive influence on the performance, 3) reward had the most significant influence on the performance. Based on the finding, therefore it is suggested that the organization pays more attention to reward, either material reward or non material reward, since reward is basically a dominant variable in influencing performance.

Leadership literature suggests that the transfer of leadership theory to non-US/Anglo-centric cultures may lead to findings that are different from current ones. Indeed, it is proposed that a dominant national culture will impact both the enacted leadership style and the followers’ expectations and acceptance of such a leadership style. Within the emerging literature on relational and change leadership, there is little consideration of the differing impact of leader behaviours in non-Western cultures. This study addresses both these gaps, through a case study that explores leadership styles and strategic change implementation within a Russian context that is seen as being directive and autocratic. The nature and impact of leadership in the context of change in Russian organizations is explored in this article, using a case-study design. Based on 20 interviews conducted in three organizations, we report findings which suggest, in a Russian context, that a more relational leadership style is more effective, and more likely to be accepted by followers, in implementing strategic change than a more ‘typical’ autocratic and directive style. The article contributes to leadership theory by providing clear empirical evidence of the value of a relational style in non-Western settings in ensuring effective change implementation.

It draws upon feminist post-structuralism and postmodernism in order to critique the practice of dichotomising differences between Australian Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal cultural practices. It uses this critique to examine current mismatch theories of differential educational location. Finally, it asks whether we need to sustain an interest in macrotheories in order to retain the ability to theorize about gender and Aboriginality across different sites.
