Over the last twenty years, the number of non-UK students studying at higher education in UK universities has increased. Their presence in a different culture and different ways of teaching can create problems, and in particular, there is some evidence that overseas students experience stress while they are at the university.

Abstract:
Thesis (M Social Work (Social Work))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: An exploratory and descriptive research design, in combination with quantitative and qualitative research approaches were utilised to elucidate the experiences of newly qualified social workers in NGOs, with regards to occupational stress and the coping strategies employed by these workers in response. The motivation for this study came from a distinct lack of research related to the experience of occupational stress by newly qualified social workers working within NGOs. The goal of this study is thus to gain a better understanding of the experiences of occupational stress by newly qualified social workers practicing in NGOs, as well as elucidating the coping strategies they employ, so as to make recommendations focussing on key areas, where alleviation of occupational stress is vital. The literature study first focussed on the South African NGO, and the newly qualified social worker within the NGO, to provide a contextual basis for the experience of occupational stress by newly qualified social workers. The literature study then explored the range of occupational stressors that might be experienced by newly qualified social workers, to gain a better understanding of the diversity of stressors present within NGOs, and their aetiology. Lastly, the literature study focussed on the variety of coping strategies available to newly qualified social workers, for coping with, and alleviation of occupational stress. The researcher utilises a purposive sample of 20 newly qualified social workers, These workers had practiced for up to 24 months, in the Boland area of the Western Cape. An interview schedule was used as measuring instrument. The result of the investigation confirmed that particular occupational stressors affecting newly qualified social workers Whilst there were a wide spectrum of stressors experienced by newly qualified social workers on an occasional basis, occupational stressors such as very heavy workloads, unsatisfactory remuneration and the multivariate problems of the client population stood out as stressors experienced on a very frequent basis. The second conclusion to be drawn from this study was that personality traits may play less of a role than expected in determining how much newly qualified social workers experience occupational stress. The third conclusion to be drawn from this study was that a wide range of coping strategies were not only available to newly qualified social workers but that a great deal were effective in helping newly qualified social workers to alleviate their occupational stress. Recommendations made by this study pointed to the importance of NGOs as well as government targeting stressors such as heavy workloads and remuneration, with the aim of retaining skilled social workers just entering into the industry. Another recommendation focussed on the fact that newly qualified social workers have to take ownership over their occupational stress, and actively work to alleviate it in a positive manner.
'n Onderhoudskedule is as navorsingsinstrument benut.

Hall, Benjamin B., Jon R. Webb, Loren Toussaint, and Jameson K. Hirsch. "Negative Religious Coping and Alcohol Misuse: Forgiveness and Humility among Religious Believers and Non-Believers." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2019. https://dc.etsu.edu/asrf/2019/schedule/26.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Alcohol misuse is a major public health concern, resulting in an estimated 88,000 deaths annually in the U.S. Negative religious coping (NRC) is a known risk factor for alcohol misuse; yet, research has not examined potential protective factors that might weaken this linkage. Forgiveness and humility are commonly-studied spiritual factors linked to positive health-related outcomes, but they have not been explored in the context of NRC and alcohol misuse. In our study, we assessed the potential protective role of forgiveness and humility in the association between NRC and alcohol misuse, among religious believers and non-believers. Methods: Participants in this IRB-approved study were recruited online via Amazon’s Mechanical Turk and self-identified as religious believers (n = 146) or non-believers (n = 120). After providing informed consent, participants completed self-report surveys including the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), Brief RCOPE, Heartland Forgiveness Scale (Forgiveness of Others), and a single item measure of humility. Results: At the bivariate level, for religious non-believers, humility was positively associated with forgiveness (r = .27, p < .01) and negatively associated with NRC (r = -.20, p < .05) and AUDIT scores (r = -.17, p < .05). Forgiveness was negatively associated with NRC (r = -.18, p < .05) and NRC was positively associated with AUDIT scores (r = .28, p < .01). For religious believers, humility was positively associated with forgiveness (r = .25, p < .01) and negatively associated with AUDIT scores (r = -.17, p < .05). Forgiveness was negatively associated with NRC (r = -.29, p < .01) and AUDIT scores (r = -.20, p < .01) and NRC was positively associated with AUDIT scores (r = -.22, p < .01). At the multivariate level, for religious believers, forgiveness moderated the relation between NRC and AUDIT scores (R2Δ = .04, p = .01), but humility did not. For religious non-believers, humility moderated the relation between NRC and AUDIT scores (R2Δ = .07, p < .01, but forgiveness did not. Conclusions: Negative religious coping is a significant risk factor for alcohol misuse among religious believers and non-believers. In the context of NRC, positive psychological constructs may provide a novel approach to reducing alcohol misuse. Forgiveness of others was protective against alcohol use problems for religious believers engaging in NRC, whereas humility was protective for religious non-believers. As a tenet of most religions, forgiveness of others may be particularly significant for religious believers in resolving NRC, of which a feature is feeling abandoned by other religious believers. For non-believers, NRC may manifest as questioning the existence of God, and humility may promote a sense of comfort in their uncertainty. Positive psychology interventions such as forgiveness therapy or the PROVE humility intervention may be effective interventions for alcohol misuse, in the context of NRC.

Abstract:

This study brings attention to the growing body of literature examining the role of culture and context in the study of generation-status differences in cross-cultural coping and physical well-being among immigrants to the United State. Prior literature on the unique challenges, stressors, coping strategies, and health outcomes for immigrants provides a basis for hypothesized generation status differences on cross-cultural coping (collectivistic, avoidance, and engagement) and physical well-being (health, safety, and environmental). A sample of 118 male and female first, 1.5, and second-generation immigrants of non-European backgrounds, between the ages of 18 and 35, were recruited from the local community to complete an online questionnaire. Results from the cross-sectional study did not yield support for the hypothesized generational status differences. However, exploratory analyses yielded several significant correlations including a positive relationship between collective coping and the safety dimension of physical well-being. Within-generation exploratory analyses yielded several significant correlations and differences on measures of coping strategies and physical well-being for demographic/contextual factors such as religiosity, age, SES, English fluency, connection to the U.S. culture, education, and ethnicity amongst 1.5 and second-generation immigrants. The empirical investigation of cross-cultural dimensions of coping and physical well-being among immigrants represents a new direction for research. This study also has potential implications for more nuanced understandings of the immigrant paradox, the socioecological perspective of acculturation, collective coping, and inclusion of both objective and subjective experiences of the environment. Implications for theory and practice, methodological limitations, and suggestions for future research are also discussed.

Abstract:
Graduate students are often exposed to many stressors during their rigorous academic programs which may impact their overall well-being. Researchers have long believed that self-compassion can be used as an emotion-regulated strategy to cope with stress. The purpose of this cross-sectional study is to examine the relationship between self-compassion levels and coping mechanisms for stress among graduate social work students. Data were collected from 97 graduate social work students in a Hispanic-serving university in Southern California (N =97). Using non-parametric techniques, the Kruskal-Wallis Test and the Mann-Whitney Test, this study analyzed the correlation between self-compassion and coping mechanisms for stress, while separately controlling for demographic variables. Results showed a statistically significant correlation between self-compassion level and coping mechanisms (p < .001). The magnitude of this correlation was strong (η2 = .18). Implications of these findings for social work practice were discussed.

Conn, Sarah Elizabeth Sharon. "A phenomenological study of help seeking behaviours and coping strategies of international students of non-European backgrounds." Thesis, Middlesex University, 2016. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/21172/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to explore the subjective experience of what are the help-seeking behaviours and coping strategies of international students from non-European backgrounds. Eighteen students from eleven non-European countries on three sites were interviewed. Using a phenomenological approach, the study seeks to capture the knowledge of the experiential experts, i.e., the students themselves, with the hope that it can be used to enhance provision for this client group in university counselling services. The study was motivated by the distinct under-use and under-representation of such students using traditional counselling services. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was employed to address the research questions from a first-person-perspective, helping to shed light on the sense making of international Students of non-European backgrounds, when confronted with challenge. Themes such as culture shock, culture, family, spirituality/religion, identity, sense of justice, resistance, perceived barriers and reflections on how to improve transition were categorised, with impact of transition, living with challenge – coping, living with challenge – seeking help; shifting identities and enhancing cultural engagement as superordinate themes emerging. The study revealed that patterns of help-seeking typically followed preferential relationships, called here hierarchy of helping. The findings are discussed with regard to implications for individual practice and staff training in transcultural work to enhance cultural engagement in educational settings.

Abstract:
This research comprised of three studies designed to investigate the coping strategies utilised by high and low performing university students with non-academic stressors. Coping research has frequently focused on single stressors providing a distorted picture of coping. Utilising a combination of quantitative and qualitative methodologies, this research provides new insights into the dynamic and multi-dimensional nature of coping with long-term, multiple stressors. It extends our understanding of coping beyond traditionally individualistic conceptualisations where active coping is valued over prosocial relationship-focused coping. Conceptualisations of social support is broadened to view it in more complex interactional terms. In Study 1, 521 university students were surveyed using a standardised coping inventory, the Ways of Coping Checklist revised. Several demographic groups were identified as at academic risk. Having good health, along with the high use Social Support and Problem Solving and the low use of Self Blame strategies all predicted high GPA. Study 2 involved a content analysis of 179 Exclusion Appeal letters submitted by excluded students. When confronted with multiple stressors, poor performing students compartmentalised or amplified multiple stressors which resulted in patterns of reactive problem-focused or emotion-focused coping. Passive and uni-directional approaches to social support resulted in the depletion of such resources. Study 3 investigated adaptive coping patterns using an open-ended questionnaire and a semi-structured interview with twenty high performing students. High performers viewed multiple stressors as inter-related, which is termed cross situational appraisal and displayed a versatile coping pattern across stressors termed cross situational versatility. Proactive and prosocial coping are critical for the acquisition and maintenance of social support over a long-term period. Implications of these research findings for Student Services staff are discussed.

Abstract:
An experiment was done to investigate whether or not there is a need to treat smokers and non-smokers as separate target audiences when creating tobacco counter-advertisements. The Extended Parallel Process Model (Witte, 1992) and Reactance Theory (Brehm, 1966) were used to guide the development of predictions. The study revealed that social marketers need to have different advertising tactics for smokers and non-smokers, since smokers have reported more maladaptive coping responses and fewer adaptive coping responses than non-smokers. Moreover, based on the fact that a smoker’s brand forms an essential part of their self-identity (Goldberg et al., 1995) the experiment was also designed to see if smokers would have differing levels of reactance and other maladaptive coping responses if they saw a counter-advertisement attacking their brand, one attacking a competing brand, and a non-branded one. The study did not reveal any significant differences in reactions among the three conditions.

Perez-Gore, Isabelle. "Issues, successes and coping mechanisms : non-traditional Indian students' experience in the context of inclusive practice and internationalisation of higher education in the UK." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2012. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10020690/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the journey of 24 non-traditional Indian students who have won a year's Ford Fellowship to do their masters' degree in development in eight different UK universities. The themes in this study revolve around Internationalisation and Widening Participation. I engaged in a longitudinal study (17 months) from a constructivist perspective. The eclectic nature of the data enabled a multidimensional construction of students' perceptions through academic experiences: focus-group interviews in Delhi explored their hopes and fears; questionnaires and follow-up meetings a month after their arrival in the UK revealed their perceptions and issues; two sets of eight in-depth interviews before Christmas and Easter enabled to further understand their successes, issues, and coping mechanisms. Finally reflective questionnaires at the end of their course provided a global view of their experience. This generated a discussion about the universities' ability to support and maximise learning for this unique group of students, who are very experienced in their field and have great potential, yet who could be considered at risk because of their disadvantaged backgrounds. Although the participants share characteristics with those accounted for in the widening participation discourse, they are not British, don't work or pay fees. They belong to the international population but they are very disadvantaged and most probably first generation literate. By using Bourdieu's field theory, analysing secondary research (Jones E., 2010; Montgomery C., 2010; Basit T. N. and Tomlinson S., 2012) around these themes and comparing them with my findings, these students' voices provide an authentic testimony of the sometimes conflicting constructions of their confrontation with the deficit discourse of the academic audience. This study offers students' unique accounts and insights into equality, diversity and inclusive practices within UK educational institutions.

Abstract:
Few studies have examined the relationships among personal factors, acculturative stress, coping resources, and depression of Korean immigrant elders residing in areas without any Korean ethnic enclave. Based on the stress and coping model and the sociocultural model of stress, coping, and adaptation, this cross-sectional study examined the relationships among acculturative stress, coping, and depression in 111 non-institutionalized Korean immigrant elders aged 60 and older residing in areas without any Korean ethnic enclaves in three neighboring states of Southwestern Ohio, North Central Region of Kentucky, and Southern Indiana. A majority of convenience and snowball sample participated in self-administered mailed surveys, and a remaining few used phone surveys and personal interviews. Multiple regression analyses indicate that social support is the strongest predictor of depression, followed by somatization and acculturative stress. Principal component analysis indicates that the participants appraised limited English proficiency as the most stressful aspect of acculturative stress. Path analyses further reveal that acculturative stress had the largest total effect on depression and partially mediated the effect of the level of acculturation on depression. The results also show that social support had the large direct effect on depression and partially mediated the effect of acculturative stress on depression. Unexpectedly, religiosity was not a predictor of depression and did not have any effect on depression. Interestingly, somatization had the positive direct effect on depression. This study suggests that the level of acculturation, socioeconomic status and social support may influence acculturative stress and depression negatively; however, acculturative stress is the most significant risk factor for depression among the participants, decreasing coping efficacy of social support and increasing somatic symptoms. Implications for future research and practice are examined on social support from family and friends and on acculturative stress. It seems that culturally relevant programs and services are important vehicles through which to enhance personal resources and social support and reduce lingual and cultural barriers among Korean immigrant elders residing in areas without any Korean ethnic enclave.

Full text
Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Concern has increased worldwide with regard to the over-prescribing of antibiotics, as well as the fact that more bacteria strains are developing resistance to antibiotics. According to research, a great deal of this use is for what has been called “non-pharmacological” reasons. The reduction of unnecessary antibiotic use and exploration of the reasons for ”irrational prescribing” has become a public health priority. OBJECTIVE: To study the reasons cited by Icelandic general practitioners for their “non-pharmacological” prescribing of antibiotics. DESIGN: A qualitative interview-study with research dialogues guided by the Vancouver School of doing phenomenology. SETTING: General practice. PARTICIPANTS: 16 general practitioners: 11 in the maximum variety sample and 5 in the theoretical sample. RESULTS: The most important reasons for prescribing antibiotics in situations with low pharmacological indications (non-pharmacological prescribing) were an unstable doctor-patient relationship due to lack of continuity of care, patient pressure in a stress-loaded society, the doctor’s personal characteristics, particularly zeal and readiness to serve, and finally, the insecurity and uncertainty of the doctor who falls back upon the prescription as a coping strategy in a difficult situation. CONCLUSION:The causes of non-pharmacological prescribing of antibiotics are highly varied, and relational factors in the interplay between the doctor and the patient are often a key factor. Therefore, it is of great importance for the general practitioner to know the patient and to become better equipped to resist patient pressure, in order to avoid the need to use the prescription as a coping strategy. Continuity of medical care and a stable doctor-patient relationship may be seen as the core concepts in this study and the most important task for the GPs is to promote the patients’ trust.

Introduction: Thanks to the progress of treatments and early diagnosis, cancers are better cured. However, during the disease and its treatments, patients often experience fatigue which could have an impact on disease progression and survival. Medical and psycho-social factors are associated with fatigue, which makes them important to evaluate in order to consider them properly when taking care of patients. Cancer prevalence is higher in the elderly, who are more affected by fatigue. This fatigue increases with frailty, characterized by a state of weakness, slow walking speed or unintentional weight loss. This is why we chose to focus on this specific populationThe objective of this thesis is to study the role of several psychosocial factors (coping, social support, depression and routinization) associated with fatigue in frail elderly patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.Method: This research, entitled Psyfrail, is an ancillary study to a randomized trial named Frail. The 50 patients included, with a mean age of 82 years old, were evaluated in terms of fatigue, depression, coping, social support and routinization during a meeting with a psychologist before the start of treatment (T1), in the middle (T2) and at the end (T3). Cross-sectional and longitudinal analyzes were conducted to highlight the factors associated with fatigue at different measurement times and with its evolution. Results: The use of problem-focused coping at T1 is associated with a decrease in general fatigue and reduced activity scores at T1 and a decrease in the reduced motivation score at T2. Routinization increases mental fatigue and reduced motivation scores at T2. Social support availability is associated with a smaller increase in the reduced motivation score over time. The decrease in general fatigue is reduced in patients with high level of emotion focused coping. Depression is associated with a higher fatigue at T1 and T2.Conclusion: The promotion of appropriate strategies to help patients cope with the disease and the treatment of depression could have a positive impact on reducing fatigue

Abstract:
In Italy the number of foreign adolescents who experienced the event of unaccompanied migration is constantly and continuously increasing. The research goal was to assess how the early unaccompanied experience of migration, characterized by difficult conditions such as the absence of parents and/or family mandate, influenced the Self representations in autobiographical narrations, depression levels, coping strategies and ethnic identity. And the broad normative-institutional context in which several social-justice workers play a role in the process of protection and custody as well.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on cases of drought since it is one of the most common and disastrous natural hazards that we experience on earth. Non-governmental organisations have traditionally offered humanitarian aid directed to response and relief measures. However, research shows that more long-term adaptive measures are more effective in reducing vulnerability and decreasing disaster risk. This thesis investigates how the International federation of the red cross and crescent society (IFRC) engage in vulnerability reducing measures through short-term coping and long-term adaptive measures and if it is in line with what the research presented in the theory section of this thesis has shown is the most effective way. Through the use of qualitative content analysis and a case-study design, four reports from two cases of drought in Sub-Saharan Africa have been analysed. The results indicate that the IFRC are still more prone to implement coping measures, but that adaptive measures are visible throughout the entirety of their projects. This thesis will have nuanced the work of Non-governmental organisations in disaster-struck areas and to contribute to future studies by its generalisability.

Abstract:
Literature has indicated that there are psychological characteristics in elite athletes of various sports that are significantly different than those of non-elite level athletes. The purpose of this study was to discover the different psychological characteristics associated with elite level gymnasts, and contrast the results with psychological characteristics of competitive gymnasts of other levels using the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory-28. Participants in this study were 195 gymnasts from gymnastics training centers throughout the United States. Results indicated that there was a significant difference in the Personal Resources Score (PCR) between the elite gymnast and all other levels. Furthermore, a significant difference was demonstrated among four of the seven sub-scales making up the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory-28. The study supports the hypothesis that the psychological make-up of "elite" level gymnasts is different than that of other competitive gymnastics levels.

Abstract:
Resilience (positive adaptation despite exposure to risk or adversity) is a widely researched construct, yet it has not been examined systematically with Australian Indigenous adolescents despite their high level of risk. Indigenous adolescents experience disproportionate disadvantage and associated poorer health and well-being compared with their non-Indigenous peers. Thus the protective factors or predictors of resilience that ameliorate the negative effects of risk in this subgroup are important to explore. Adolescence is a critical period for examining resilience given the increased vulnerability to mental health problems during this time. Of interest to this thesis are the psychosocial predictors of resilience (protective factors), which act to ameliorate the negative effects of stress. Three widely established protective factors were examined: Coping skills, social support, and multidimensional self-concept. These protective factors were compared in a sample of 304 Australian non-Indigenous (n = 245) and Indigenous (n = 59) adolescents, aged 12-18 years. Using a methodological framework developed for this study resilience was assessed by examining stress (negative stressful life events and daily hassles) and adaptation (internalising, externalising and other mental health symptoms). Participants were classified into four resilience groups based on their stress (high or low) and adaptation (positive or negative): resilient (high stress, positive adaptation), negative expected (high stress, negative adaptation), positive expected (low stress, positive adaptation), or poor copers (low stress, negative adaptation). Results were examined separately for non-Indigenous and Indigenous participants. The two cultural groups were then compared. Results revealed that higher stress was strongly associated with more internalising, externalising and other mental health problems. The impact of daily hassles was a strong predictor of adaptation, particularly for Indigenous participants. Indigenous participants reported higher levels of stress and more negative adaptation than non-Indigenous participants. Three coping methods were examined: Solving the Problem, Reference to Others and Non-Productive coping. Solving the Problem coping was a strong predictor of positive adaptation and resilience for non-Indigenous adolescents but not for Indigenous adolescents. No cultural differences in Solving the Problem coping were revealed. Reference to Others was found to be a maladaptive coping method in relation to resilience. Non-Productive coping (e.g., avoidance and substance use) was also found to be maladaptive, and used more by Indigenous than non-Indigenous participants. Social support only predicted resilience for non-Indigenous participants in conditions of very high stress. Contrary to expectations, social support did not discriminate among the Indigenous resilience groups and no significant cultural differences were revealed. Self-concept was strongly related to resilience and positive adaptation for non-Indigenous participants, although not for Indigenous participants. Cultural comparisons, however, revealed that positive self-concept was associated with positive adaptation for both groups. While differences between non-Indigenous and Indigenous participants on several self-concept domains were revealed, the total self-concept of non-Indigenous and Indigenous participants did not differ. The results of this study revealed both similarities and differences in the relationships between the three predictors investigated and the resilience of non-Indigenous and Indigenous adolescents. The findings make some progress toward informing culturally appropriate interventions to promote and strengthen the resilience of Indigenous young people.

Taylor, Georgina. "Overcontrolled tendencies in refractory depression compared to acute non-chronic depression : the importance of treating maladaptive personality style." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/14052.

Full text
Abstract:
By 2020 depression is predicted to be the second most frequent cause of disability worldwide. Research suggests that existing methods of treatment are ineffective for many resulting in a large number of chronic, treatment resistant courses (termed refractory depression [RD]). Further evidence suggests that up to 60% of individuals with RD have a co-morbid Personality Disorder (PD), namely Clusters A and C. As such, it has been proposed that individuals with RD fail to respond to existing treatment interventions because these treatments fail to address maladaptive personality styles (i.e., overcontrol tendencies) that may complicate treatment. This project aimed to test this novel assertion by examining whether individuals with RD exhibit higher levels of overcontrol (e.g., skills deficits in the expression and experience of emotion, in forming close relationships and in receptivity and openness) compared to individuals with current, but not chronic, depression and a normal control group. A total of 180 individuals were recruited and based on eligibility criteria were allocated to the following groups: RD, n = 56; acute, non-chronically depressed (ANCD), n = 61; normal control (NC), n = 63. Participants completed a series of self-report questionnaires and as a whole, between group analyses supported study predictions; individuals with RD displayed significantly higher levels of overcontrol compared to both the ANCD and NC groups. More specifically, individuals with RD demonstrated significantly more difficulties with interpersonal relationships and expressing emotions, a significantly greater need for structure and significantly higher levels of maladaptive perfectionism compared to controls. This study forms part of a large multi-centre randomised controlled trial (RCT; REFRAMED) that is designed to study the efficacy of a novel treatment intervention - Radically Open-Dialectical Behaviour Therapy – for individuals with RD.

Full text
Abstract:
Purposes : This thesis studies the conscious and unconscious aspects of the therapeutic decision-making, suggested by oncologist during consultation, by patients affected by breast cancer. All patients had a curative surgery of their cancer and they can benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy. In the eyes of physician the decision can be positive or negative but its perception does not correspond to ultimate’s outcome of the psychic process, in progress, of patient elaboration. The international literature focus on obvious elements of patients’ therapeutic choice during therapeutic disclosure. In addition, our study investigates the possibilities of adaptation and unconscious defenses according to their personality. This holistic clinical approach shows that 4 mains co-factors involve in patient’s decision-making. Population and methods : This is a comparative and longitudinal clinical research of the medical consultation with 50 patients. Patients psychological factors of the decision-making has been registered and analysed. Results : 82% of patients have accepted adjuvant chemotherapy while 18% refused it. The Adhesion group had mainly a depressive reaction while the Refusal group had predominant hostile personality traits. The anxiety was significantly higher in the Adhesion group than in the Refusal. Adhesive patients seemed to repress their emotions when accepting the treatment while Refusal group expressed emotions in words. Conclusion : Adaptation of the physicians communication and investigation of patients personality should enhance the decision-making of patients when they must decide or not of treatment continuation despite secondary effects

Horemans, Jean-François. "Aspects normatifs des parcours autopraxéologiques à caractère (non)-résilient." Doctoral thesis, Universite Libre de Bruxelles, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2013/ULB-DIPOT:oai:dipot.ulb.ac.be:2013/210066.

Full text
Abstract:

Normative aspects of the (non) resilient self-praxeological pathways

The individuals confronted to adverse circumstances within a socio professional context resort, more or less consciously, to several trails in the confrontation with those events. Amongst those trails, the resilience, the copying and the self-praxeological pathways (self-education by the practice) play a less and less contingent part in this world where the management of the labour's strength shows a progressive evolution to a human resources management wished as always more refined.

Anyway, this "HRM" does not anymore concern the work sphere strictly speaking, but henceforth increasingly expand to vocational training as well as to the efforts made, down and uphill, in order to foster the socio-professional reintegration, nay the "simple" updating of the employability of the workers affected for instance by precocious – and often rough – ending imposed to their involvement in the active life.

What are the normative aspects of the pathways related to the present research?

We first consider that the telling in itself (ipsative story), in whatever form it is expressed, represents a major energizer of the potentially resilient, copying or self-praxeological approach (proposed as non resilient). Those different pathways can be adopted by the same person, after the stage of stupefaction, at the time of envisaging a reappropriation of its development (agentivity).

In order to offer to the accompanying persons and trainers some new tools for a human resource management more oriented on a long term integration than on an "immediate" production of statistics, we consider that the signs of scriptural or verbo-behavioural telling of its selfhood by an individual is partly based on fictional pictures, nay legitimate self-lies that must be taken into consideration.

The stories - fictional or not - from ten writers, relevant, up to our perception, to at least one of the pathways envisaged, are analysed in the framework of this research in order to underline, as far as possible, the quality, the chronology and the constitutive aspects of their text, and therefore the place they hold in the reconstruction, at least partial, they attest at the end of their scriptural exercise of sublimation.

Abstract:
The research investigated consumers' decision-making process during pre-adoption and consumption stages of consumer-based technologies via the context of mobile apps. In an attempt to integrate consumer resistance in predicting the end-decisions to adopt/not adopt or continue/discontinue the use of a technology, the study presented some interesting findings. Employing the theoretical framework of cognitive appraisal theory, the study integrated the TAM, paradoxes of technology, and coping strategies to propose and empirically validate a process-based model of decision-making.Data were collected via a self-administered web-based survey. Two versions of the questionnaire were used to elicit consumers' responses from adopters and non-adopters of mobile apps. A total of 646 smartphone owners responded to the survey, of which, 375 respondents had downloaded apps in the past and 271 respondents had not downloaded any apps. The proposed hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling. Results demonstrated that most part of the TAM3 framework is replicable in a consumer-based setting. Additional findings provided evidence for the strong role of goal relevance in the TAM framework. The study also supported the effect of perceived usefulness and perceived ease-of-use on different technology paradoxes. The factor structure of the technology paradoxes suggested three distinct dimensions. Consumers' evaluation of control, freedom, newness, assimilation, and fulfillment of need as derived from the use of mobile apps was captured by Perceived Benefits. The construct, Perceived Apprehension, comprised of consumers' assessment of the chaos, enslavement, obsolesce, isolation, and creation of needs as a result of using mobile apps. Finally, the factor, Perceived Obscurity, investigated the confusion and/or ambiguity within individuals by measuring their perceived inefficiency and incompetence in using mobile apps. Most importantly, separate investigations of the pre-adoption and consumption stages highlighted consumers' use of varying degrees of resistance as influenced by their appraisal of the technology. The non-adopters resisted the use of mobile apps by either being indifferent towards it or postponing the decision to adopt. The adopters of mobile apps were also found to reject its use by distancing, abandoning, or neglecting the apps. The role of positive coping investigated the positive behavioral tendencies employed by consumers to overcome the challenges of using mobile apps. Managerial implications are discussed.

Fourie, Lukas Albertus. "Burnout and engagement of non-professional counsellors in South Africa / Lukas Albertus Fourie." Thesis, North-West University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/424.

Full text
Abstract:
Counselling services as provided by non-professional counsellors have been in place for a number of decades. Counselling traumatised people demands a significant amount of emotional investment from the counsellor. A neglected area as far as non-professional counsellors in South Africa is concerned, is the well-being of the counsellors. Burnout as well as its antithesis, work engagement, are two possible transactional outcomes impacting on the well-being of these counsellors. The measurement of burnout and work engagement requires valid and reliable measuring instruments. The dearth of research studies in the area of burnout and work engagement, together with the unique contribution of non-professional counsellors in organisational settings, has led to the primary focus of this study being the exploration of the experience of this group of counsellors doing trauma counselling in financial institutions in South Africa. A lack of norms for the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS), and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) for non-professional counsellors doing trauma counselling makes the identification of burnout and work engagement within this specialist environment difficult. Consequently, investigating the reliability and validity of the MBI-HSS and the UWES would result in the standardisation of these specific measuring instruments, therefore contributing to the identification of burnout and work engagement with non-professional trauma counsellors. Some of the factors that could play a role in the prevalence of burnout and work engagement are secondary traumatic stress, the demands of counselling, lack of resources, personal consequences, social support and sense of coherence. The objectives of this research were to standardise the MBI-HSS and UWES for non-professional counsellors as well as to develop and test a causal model of burnout and work engagement for this specialist group. The research method involved four separate articles, each consisting of a brief literature overview and an empirical study. A cross-sectional design, whereby a sample is drawn from a population at a particular point in time, was used. The data for this study was collected from 168 non-professional counsellors, employed by three of the major banks in South Africa. The MBI-HSS, UWES, Orientation to Life Questionnaire (OLQ) as well as a Self-Report Questionnaire (SRQ) and a biographical questionnaire were administered. Descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, correlations, canonical analysis, and structural equation modelling were used. Structural equation modelling confirmed a three-factor model of burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and personal accomplishment). In contrast with research findings confirming the three-factor model of the UWES (vigour, dedication and absorption), a one-factor model for the UWES was confirmed for non-professional counsellors. The internal consistency of the scales for the MBI-HSS and UWES was found to be satisfactory and in line with reported findings in the literature. Structural equation analysis showed that the lack of resources and job demands predicted the core of burnout, namely emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation. The conflicts and pressures that are already associated with the everyday work of non-professional counsellors are likely to be magnified by the counselling role. Non-professional counsellors continually face conflicts created by the fact that they are accountable to large organisations, but professionally, ethically and morally devoted to their clients (the victims of trauma who are being counselled by them). They must balance the competing, and sometimes opposing demands of several parties such as trauma victims, employees, families and communities. To add to these circumstances it is important to remember that counselling is not the main job objective of the non-professional counsellors. Counselling is seen as an "add-on" to their job description and is in most instances not part of their performance measurement/assessment. Work engagement was related to low burnout scores, while personal accomplishment was associated with work engagement. High sense of coherence had a mediating effect on burnout and a positive effect on work engagement. This study seems to emphasise that job demands have a more negative effect on engagement when sense of coherence is low than when sense of coherence is high. Conversely, it is assumed that sense of coherence provides functions such as increased perception of coping capacity or minimised stress appraised, which decreases the effects of stress on an individual. Recommendations for the organisations and future research were made.

Full text
Abstract:
This research into Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) presents the results of 60 first-person psycho-phenomenological interviews with 30 New Zealand women. The participants were recruited from the Canterbury and Wellington regions, 10 had recovered. Taking a non-dual, non-reductive embodied approach, the phenomenological data was analysed semiotically, using a graph-theoretical cluster analysis to elucidate the large number of resulting categories, and interpreted through the enactive approach to cognitive science. The initial result of the analysis is a comprehensive exploration of the experience of CFS which develops subject-specific categories of experience and explores the relation of the illness to universal categories of experience, including self, ‘energy’, action, and being-able-to-do. Transformations of the self surrounding being-able-to-do and not-being-able-to-do were shown to elucidate the illness process. It is proposed that the concept ‘energy’ in the participants’ discourse is equivalent to the Mahayana Buddhist concept of ‘contact’. This characterises CFS as a breakdown of contact. Narrative content from the recovered interviewees reflects a reestablishment of contact. The hypothesis that CFS is a disorder of action is investigated in detail. A general model for the phenomenology and functional architecture of action is proposed. This model is a recursive loop involving felt meaning, contact, action, and perception and appears to be phenomenologically supported. It is proposed that the CFS illness process is a dynamical decompensation of the subject’s action loop caused by a breakdown in the process of contact. On this basis, a new interpretation of neurological findings in relation to CFS becomes possible. A neurological phenomenon that correlates with the illness and involves a brain region that has a similar structure to the action model’s recursive loop is identified in previous research results and compared with the action model and the results of this research. This correspondence may identify the brain regions involved in the illness process, which may provide an objective diagnostic test for the condition and approaches to treatment. The implications of this model for cognitive science and CFS should be investigated through neurophenomenological research since the model stands to shed considerable light on the nature of consciousness, contact and agency. Phenomenologically based treatments are proposed, along with suggestions for future research on CFS. The research may clarify the diagnostic criteria for CFS and guide management and treatment programmes, particularly multidimensional and interdisciplinary approaches. Category theory is proposed as a foundation for a mathematisation of phenomenology.

Abstract:
The general aim of this research was to investigate the phenomenon of non coping among individuals on middle management level, directed by the paradigm of salutogenesis, and more specifically, the concept of Sense of Coherence. The Sense of Coherence questionnaire of Antonovsky (1987) was applied as a measuring instrument in order to determine the various levels of respondents regarding Sense of Coherence. This was followed by semi-structured interviews with an identified case series, followed by an integration of results. Research information derived from the total scores indicated an even distribution along the continuum of the instrument's scale. During the qualitative study, all individuals representing the case series experienced similar levels of stress, though various coping strategies apply. Although all individuals representing the case series attempt to cope, a tendency towards non coping or maladaptive coping occurred due to the influence of various sources Of managerial stress such as insufficient training.
