Summary As modern hydrodynamic codes increase in sophistication, the availability of realistic test problems becomes increasingly important. In gas dynamics, one common unrealistic aspect of most test problems is the ideal gas assumption, which is unsuited to many real applications, especially those involving high pressure and speed metal deformation. Our work considers the collapsing cavity and converging shock test problems, showing to what extent the ideal gas assumption can be removed from their specification. It is found that while most materials simply do not admit simple (that is scaling) solutions in this context, there are infinite-dimensional families of materials which do admit such solutions. We characterize such materials, derive the appropriate ordinary differential equations and analyze the associated nonlinear eigenvalue problem. It is shown that there is an inherent tension between boundedness of the solution, boundedness of its derivatives and the entropy condition. The special case of a constant-speed cavity collapse is considered and found to be heuristically possible, contrary to common intuition. Finally, we give an example of a concrete non-ideal collapsing cavity scaling solution based on a recently proposed pseudo-Mie–Gruneisen equation of state.

It is widely believed that stars form from collapsing interstellar clouds. However, molecular clouds typically contain of the order of 103 solar masses. Thus a mechanism is required that allows a collapsing cloud to fragment into a number of collapsing stellar sized sub-condensations. The early work was based on a virial theorem approach—defining a critical mass a cloud must exceed in order for its gravitational force to overcome the resistive thermal, rotational and magnetic forces, thus allowing the cloud to collapse. This critical mass is analogous to the Jeans mass for non-rotating, non-magnetic clouds. It is thought that a cloud containing several critical masses may collapse into several sub-condensations. Further, it is thought that the galactic magnetic field will cause the critical mass to decrease as the cloud collapses, allowing the cloud to fragment into a number of sub-condensations. The critical mass decreases as the cloud flattens down the field lines (since Mcrit ∝ B3/ϱ2 and B ∝ ϱk, K < ⅔ for non-isotropic collapse).

Summary This study examines the stability of a family of simplified, collisionless models of galaxy collapse, to fluid-like perturbations that leave the radial density profile unaltered, but distort the galaxy’s shape. The unperturbed models have constant density, and exhibit fully non-linear oscillations around an equilibrium radius in physical space. The equations that determine the time-development of perturbations in the linear regime are derived, and are shown to be of the Mathieu type; they are solved in the special case of the quadrupole mode. The ranges of values of the usual parameter 2T/|W| for which instability exists, leading inevitably to triaxial solutions, are determined. It is shown that, for 2T/|W|&lt;0.1541, the initial configurations are unstable and the growth time of the instability is sufficiently short to lead to flattened final configurations. It is suggested that all of these results apply to realistic models of galaxy collapse.

AbstractThe formation of the relativistic jets and a non-thermal emission from the collapsing magnetized stars with dipole magnetic fields and the heterogeneous particles distribution are investigated. These polar jets are formed when the stellar magnetosphere compress during collapse its magnetic field increases considerable. The electric field is produced in magnetosphere, which the charged particles will be accelerated. As follow from the calculation, the jets can be formed from collapsing stars already the explosion of supernova stars without shock waves. These jets will generate the non-thermal radiation. The radiation flux depends on the distance to the star, its magnetic field and the particle spectrum in the magnetosphere. This flux can be observed near Earth by means of modern telescopes in the form of the radiation pulse with duration equal to time collapse.

The research of early evolution stages and formation of galaxies requires creation of appropriate non-linear theory. The formation process of globular cluster systems (GCS) covers the long period of time as probably one begins from a dark matter state. So far it is difficult to simulate formation of GCS and galaxies ab initio. That’s why it is necessary to construct exact analytically solvable models of non-linear non-stationary early stages of evolution of self-gravitating systems and revealing the instabilities on a background of non-equilibrium states. The formation and evolution of GCS at early stage of collapsing dark matter (or protogalaxy) can be explained by instability of the modes of the high oscillation degrees (Nuritdinov et al., 2000), which corresponds to rather small-scale perturbations of the density of collapsing system. The mode degree defines on the average the number of clusters.

The collapsing variant is distinct from the others, characterized clinically by a more severe nephrotic syndrome generally resistant to immunosuppressive therapy. It is known that a great number of patients progress to end-stage renal disease. Recognizing this lesion in biopsy is frequently challenging owing to the focal nature of the process which highlights the need for keeping a high index of suspicion for the diagnosis. We study the effects of the ultraviolet background radiation (UVB) on the formation of primordial galaxies, solving self-consistently radiative transfer of photons, non-equilibrium H2 chemistry, and one-dimensional hydrodynamics. The cut-off scale of collapse is shown to drop significantly compared to previous optically thin predictions, due to both self-shielding of the gas and H2 cooling. For plausible radiation intensities and spectra, the collapsing gas can cool efficiently to temperatures well below 104K before rotationally supported. Our results imply that star formation can take place in low-mass objects collapsing in the UVB.

We also determine the generators of the maximal ideal in the universal affine vertex algebra $V^k ({\mathfrak{g}})$ at certain negative integer levels. Considering some conformal embeddings in the simple affine vertex algebras $V_{-1/2} (C_n)$ and $V_{-4}(E_7)$, we surprisingly obtain the realization of non-simple affine vertex algebras of types $B$ and $D$ having exactly one nontrivial ideal.

We discuss recent models of chemical evolution in the developing and collapsing protostellar envelopes associated with low-mass star formation. In particular, the effects of depletion of gas-phase molecules onto grain surfaces is considered. We show that during the middle to late evolutionary stages, prior to the formation of a protostar, various species selectively deplete from the gas phase. The principal pattern of selective depletions is the depletion of sulfur-bearing molecules relative to nitrogen-bearing species: NH3 and N2H+. This pattern is shown to be insensitive to the details of the dynamics and marginally sensitive to whether the grain mantle is dominated by polar or non-polar molecules. Based on these results we suggest that molecular ions are good tracers of collapsing envelopes. The effects of coupling chemistry and dynamics on the resulting physical evolution are also examined. Particular attention is paid to comparisons between models and observations.

It is well known that static wormhole configurations in general relativity (GR) are possible only if matter threading the wormhole throat is “exotic”—i.e., violates a number of energy conditions. For this reason, it is impossible to construct static wormholes supported only by dust-like matter which satisfies all usual energy conditions. However, this is not the case for non-static configurations. In 1934, Tolman found a general solution describing the evolution of a spherical dust shell in GR. In this particular case, Tolman’s solution describes the collapsing dust ball; the inner space-time structure of the ball corresponds to the Friedmann universe filled by a dust. In the present work we use the general Tolman’s solution in order to construct a dynamic spherically symmetric wormhole solution in GR with dust-like matter. The solution constructed represents the collapsing dust ball with the inner wormhole space-time structure. It is worth noting that, with the dust-like matter, the ball is made of satisfies the usual energy conditions and cannot prevent the collapse. We discuss in detail the properties of the collapsing dust wormhole.

The current paper presents further investigations into the crushing behaviour of circular aluminium tubes subjected to axial impact load. Experiments prove that in order to achieve the real collapsing shape of tubes under axial loads in numerical simulations, an initial geometric imperfection corresponding to the plastic buckling modes should be introduced on the tube geometry before the impact event. In this study, it is shown that the collapsing shape of tube is affected by this initial imperfection and consequently it is shown that by applying an initial geometric imperfection similar to the axisymmetric plastic buckling mode, the tubes tend to collapse in a concertina mode. This phenomenon is studied for circular tubes subjected to axial impact load and two design methods are suggested to activate the axisymmetric plastic buckling mode, using an initial circumferential edge groove and using one- and two-rigid rings on the tube. In each case the broadening of the concertina collapsing region is estimated using numerical simulations. Experimental tests are performed to study the influence of cutting the edge groove on the collapsing mode. In order to optimize the crashworthiness parameters of the structure such as the absorbed energy, maximum deflection in axial direction, maximum reaction force, and mean reaction force, a system of neural networks is designed to reproduce the crushing behaviour of the structure, which is often non-smooth and highly non-linear in terms of the design variables (diameter, thickness, and length of tube). The finite-element code ABAQUS/Explicit is used to generate the training and test sets for the neural networks. The response surface of each objective function (crashworthiness parameters) against the change of design variables is calculated and both single-objective and multi-objective optimizations are carried out using the genetic algorithm.

In the present paper, the dynamic behavior of cavitation bubbles near a wall is experimentally investigated with a focus on the retardant effects of the wall on the collapsing dynamics of the bubble. In the present experiments, a cavitation bubble is generated by a focused laser beam with its behavior recorded through high-speed photography. During the data analysis, the influences of non-dimensional bubble–wall distance on the bubble collapsing dynamics are qualitatively and quantitatively investigated in terms of the interface evolution, the velocities of the poles, and the movement of the bubble centroid. Our results reveal that the presence of the wall could significantly affect the collapsing characteristics, leading to a dramatic difference between the moving velocities of interfaces near and away from the wall. With the decrease of the bubble–wall distance, the effects will be gradually strengthened with a rapid movement of the bubble centroid during the final collapse. Finally, a physical interpretation of the phenomenon is given based on the bubble theory, together with a rough estimation of the induced water hammer pressure by the bubble collapse.

AbstractWe use images derived from collapsing, turbulent molecular cloud simulations without sinks to explore the effects of finite image angular resolution and noise on the derived clump mass function. These effects randomly perturb the clump masses, producing a lognormal clump mass function with a Salpeter-like high mass end. We show that the characteristic break mass of the simulated clump mass functions changes with the angular resolution of the images in a way that is entirely consistent with the observations. We also present some cautionary tales regarding sink particles and highlight the need to ensure that sinks actually correspond to distinct collapsing objects. We test several popular numerical sink criteria in the literature and compare to converged, non-sink results.

We consider the static and non static spherically symmetric spacetimes for outer and inner regions of collapsing object respectively. For the smooth matching of inner and outer regions, the Senovilla as well as Darmois matching conditions are utilized. The closed form solutions are obtained from field equations. Moreover, we examine the apparent horizons and their physical significance. The effect of cosmological constant and [Formula: see text] term is same and the collapsing rate speeds up as compared to that of anisotropic fluid case when the electromagnetic field is introduced. Electromagnetic charge also affects the time interval of singularities and cosmological horizons.

Abstract The focal segmental glomerulosclerosis is characterized by a morphological heterogeneity, most likely reflecting different pathogenetic mechanisms. The Colombian classification distinguishes five morphological types – non-specific (not otherwise specified or classical), perihilar, cellular, a tubular pole (tip) one and a collapsing one. Eighty-one (81) patients were studied. Their distribution according to the histological variant showed the highest frequency of the non-specific (classical) variant – 70.4%, followed by the perihilar variant – 27.20%, the cellular variant – 1.2% and the collapsing variant – 1.2%. No patients with tip lesions were identified. There were significant differences in the creatinine levels and the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) at the beginning and at the end of the follow-up between patients with the perihilar and the non-specific variants. Patients with the perihilar variant had a better treatment response with a high percentage of patients achieving complete remission – 59.1%. Patients with the non-specific variant had a high chance of treatment failure – 26.3% had no effect from treatment. The results of the study give grounds to assume that the histological variant affects the clinical picture, course and therapeutic response in patients with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. It could be used as a prognostic marker of disease behavior and guide the clinician in treatment decisions.

ABSTRACT The global visibility of a singularity as an end state of the gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric pressureless cloud is investigated. We show the existence of a non-zero measured set of parameters: the total mass and the initial mean density of the collapsing cloud, giving rise to a physically strong globally visible singularity as the end state for a fixed velocity function. The existence of such a set indicates that such singularity is stable under small perturbation in the initial data causing its existence. This is true for marginally as well as non-marginally bound cases. The possibility of the presence of such suitable parameters in the astrophysical setup is then studied: (1) The singularities’ requirements at the centre of the M87 galaxy and at the centre of our galaxy (SgrA*) to be globally visible are discussed in terms of the initial size of the collapsing cloud forming them, presuming that such singularities are formed due to gravitational collapse. (2) The requirement for the primordial singularities formed due to a collapsing configuration after getting detached from the background universe at the time of matter-dominated era just after the time of matter-radiation equality, to be globally visible, is discussed. (3) The scenario of the collapse of a neutron star after reaching a critical mass, which is achieved by accreting the supernova ejecta expelled by its binary companion core progenitor, is considered. The primary aim of this paper is to show that globally visible singularities can form in astrophysical setups under appropriate circumstances.

Therapeutic significance in the studies of HIFU-induced effects of is attached to the local heating of tissues, but the role of the mechanical component caused by non-stationary cavitation is practically not taken into account. Calculations show that the temperature inside cavitation bubbles can differ significantly from the temperature in the thermal ablation zone, and the developing temperature gradient can change the formation of the thermal field. Collapsing bubbles can cause mechanical destruction of tissues.
