Full textBeing able to identify the person in front of us and being able to remember his or her name appear to be essential activities to daily social interactions. However, compared to other available information related to a person, the proper name seems to be specific information. Proper name retrieval has been very often described as particularly difficult. Although this work aims to study the organization of semantic information in memory, and more specifically the proper name information. Moreover, access to semantic information is known be deficient for Alzheimer disease.A first study has allowed to develope out a standardized material of 210 faces/names, permitting an accurate selection of stimuli. Two behavioural and three electrophysiological studies have been carried out to study the organization of semantic information in memory, and more specifically the proper name. For the last two experiments, we have worked on learning and how to keep specific information « proper name » into memory for Alzheimer‟s disease patients. Discussion of the different results is based on current theorical knowledge on the subject

Full textThis study propose to treat the onomastic of mauretania tingitana, based on the corpus: inscriptions latines du maroc (latins inscriptions of morrocco). First, we proceed at the inventory of all inscriptions attested and interessed the onomastic. In this addition, we study the differents monuments and their chronological repartition. This walk can permit us a better understanding of landscape epigraphic of mauretania tingitana. At the second time, we examine the gentilicia in alphabetical order. Every name studied, can be accompanied with reference of its inscription. This also, the test of gentilice require a strip of the corpus < c. I. We confer a great importance at the context of every inscription. Finally, we end our study of the different cognomina, this for determine the social structure of population in mauretania tingitana at the roman period

Full textThe present research work concerns the translation of children's literature and comes within the scope of the interpretative theory of translation. Of all the fields of study providing the translator with food for thought in this domain, the richest sources of insight include the study of how children learn to read, hermeneutics and text psycholinguistics. An analysis of picture books, lecture magazines and novels intended for seven-to-nineyear-olds reveals that all these varying forms of literature share common characteristics and similar translation implications. Three difficulties were singled out for father analysis. They derive respectively from : - the translation of proper nouns motivation; - the translation of idioms accompanied by illustrations; - the translation of nursery rhymes accompanied by illustrations. An analytic study of the steps translators have taken to overcome these three types of difficulty made it possible to draw up some rules of translation which were then tested experimentally. The aim was to create, for each type of difficulty, a widely applicable resolution model. The models generated by the present research project are designed to facilitate the task of translators faced with any of the three types of difficulty examined

Full textAs one studies the names given to the newly freed of 1848, one finds that the most ludicrous or injurious nicknames are placed side by side with anagrams or word puzzles and “normal” names, but what makes Martinique special is the fact that these names were imposed on two thirds of its population when it was a duty to register 73. 000 “new citizens” on voting lists. This emergency situation was to create the West Indian (and Reunion) exception called “The Individuality Record”, which is the main source of this study. We have been able to work on 53. 000 of those Individuality Records which represent 74% of the Martinican population attributed with names, and about 26. 000 acts of emancipation in the antebellum era, giving a total corpus of about 25. 000 names. A typological summary of these names is done, filing them in 13 linguistic categories, from names of French origin to African names, not forgetting names of English, Irish, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, German, Italian, Polish, Russian, Caribbean, Creole origin, also names taken in various linguistic fields : names of Ancient or Mythological source, of historical, literary or geographical source, names taken from the natural surrounding (animals, fruits…) or the human one (things, crafts, tools), anagrams, nicknames, pejorative names, various linguistic derivations and creations. Investigating the socio-historical context is likewise essential to explain and evaluate these linguistic facts. The political context, the juridical and social relations between the three classes forming Martinique at the time (whites, free colored people, slaves), a review of the slave trade, as well as demographic datas, are taken in account in

Full textTurka of burkina faso's south-west are a society without leader, predominantly matrilinear. We have tackled this society in political, religious and economical fields from the systematic study of the turka's personal names. The personal name, messenger-name, holding a complaint or a claime of the father, expressing a problem in any field of this social life. This studie discloses all the conflicts underlying ego's or ego's father's matrilineage. On the political ground, antagonismes appear between the state's power and the traditional customs ; on the religious ground, themessenger names express the clashes inside of the lignages, related to accusations of witchraft because of hidden speaches, said "speak of the belly". The stake of these conflicts essentially lies in the arrangement of the wedding and in the payment of the high's matrimonial contribution. This study use allowed us to speak of the whole social network, and particulary what is most essential and problematic for the turka : the lineage endures

Full textThe principle of surname inalienability asks the question of the validity of contracts having such a sign as object. The analysis of the specificity of this principle, viewed as a functional rule, nevertheless allows the assessment of its domain : the purpose of the inalienability rules is to prevent a person from waiving his or her surname, which identifies him or her, or from waiving his or her right to one's own name, which protects his or her personality. Therefore, it implicates the nullity of contracts involving an assignment of the person's surname or of his or her right to one's own name. In contrast, the inalienability rule does not prevent the validity of contracts relative to a surname which has acquired a secondary meaning as a trademark or a tradename or of contracts concerning the sole use of a surname authorized by his or her holder to a third party. While the first contracts are governed by the common law rules relating to industrial property's matter, the second may be qualified as "abstention contracts", the holder of the right commiting himself or herself not to exercise it against the party authorized to use the surname. To these two types of contracts is added a third categorie of contracts, which market the value of a celebrity's surname. These contracts point out that the celebrities'surname has today a publicity value which may be marketed. But its analysis also points out that the french law is maladjusted to the practical necessities of reservation and marketing of this value. It is therefore a necessity to recognize a property right on the celebrity's surname as the right of publicity in united states of America

The mutability of the names and the practice of tecknonymy are in accordance with the evolutionary conception of the human being. The different ways of using (or not using) names show the familial hierarchy in descent groups where the conjugal couple is lacking. The meaning of names the reasons for taking a new name reflect an oral culture where naming and acting are synonym. Today, the large variety in the form of the names and in the custums about the name, due to numerous influences, among them the tradition itself, are the reflexion of the multiplicity of the worlds in which the contemporary malagasy lives

Full textFrom a linguistic and comparative approach, the study of proper names in the tigrinyaphone area (the current Erythrea), we are enabled to point out the ancient relationship between Geez and tigrinya langages. Through the morphological and semantic analysis, some aspects of the most formerly documented elements with some tigrinya structures, we find a preponderance of Geez structures. Through a historical point of view, the most significant element appears to be frequency of religious meanings in the studied names. This shows the role of Christianity in the local constitution of a cultural identity

Full textThis Thesis focuses on the work that Marcel Broodthaers (1924-1976) produced as a poet, as a journalist and as an artist. It is centered on the (names of the) persons he referred to in his work, both by means of word or text, and by image or reproduction, and this from the moment he made the works public. A general analysis of the work precedes the essential part of the research, which has been given the form of an alphabet book. The dossiers of all the persons referred to by Marcel Broodthaers are in alphabetical order. Each dossier contains the various types of references in chronological order, accompanied by a description. If needed, notes have been added for a better understanding. This part is followed by an analysis of the alphabet book. The questions raised focus on the references to the (names of the) persons, and include: the categories, the moment, the number and the frequency, the use, the means and the manner, the themes. Finally, we investigate to which degree the various references involve any “influence of” in the work of Marcel Broodthaers. The acknowledgements, the table of contents and the introduction can be found in the beginning of the Thesis. The conclusions and the bibliography are at the end

Full textIn bhete thought, man will be defined through his own activity. For man's actions express his self. So that they characterize and describe him and become his praise names and drum names. The latter single out an individual, since they identity him by stressing a fact, an action or a quality that distinguish him from other group members. Through praise and drum names, man and society acknowiedge one another. Such names point at man's both past and present, that is what he was and is according to society. The individual and society depend on one another. The bhete have a saying for this :"the ax was made for the handle and the handle for the ax. " man is the agent of his growth and fate. To be human therefore means to be self-reliant, autonomous and responsible for one's future according to one's means. On this another bhete proverb says :"a sheep puts its black patches where it wants to. "

Full textIn the icelandic system the kinship relation between father and son daughter is explicitly marked in a semantically transparent way. This thesis reports an exploratory research into icelandic children's understanding of this system and of close kinship relations. It was hypothesized that this particular linguistic and cultural context would promote the acquisition of the kinship concepts involved, even though their acquisition was expected to depend primarily on more general cognitive processes. 120 children (5 groups, median 4,5,6,7, and 8 years respectively) were interviewed individually about the patronymics and the kinship relations in their own family and in a family of dolls (3 generations). A battery of piagetian tests was also administered to the 6 year old children. The results reveal a hierarchical order of acquisition, depending on the distance - in generations and familiarty - between the child and the person in question. Three general developmental levels were identified : 4-5 year old children have an "ego-centered", syncretic conception of the family, and reduce patronymics to memorized "labels". After age 6, children's representation is restructured by their gradual construction of kinship relations' reciprocity and multiplicity. The patronymic system is partially understood. After age 8, all relations between the three generations become reciprocal, relative and and transitive and the patronymic system is mastered. The development thus reflects the progressive con- struction of the logical properties of kinship relations. Contrary to my hypothesis, no effects of the patronymic system were observed in this intracultural study. On the other hand, the importance of child- ren's affective and social environment appeared in several ways not predicted : matrilinear relations tended. .

Full textLiterature on face recognition is very well-documented. Researches have increased since 1970's pointing out interest more important in apparent superiority of pictorial over verbal memory(Ellis,1975). Psychologists see face as the prototype of complex non verbal stimulus ; facesbelong toa large class of objects that are homogeneous and very complex structurally (Bruyer,1987). The aim of this work is to bring to the fore similarities and differences between familiar faces and names memory and pictures and words memory. We offer s a more in depth approach of the paradigm of dual coding (Paivio, 1969) applied to faces and names. Different techniques were used to test dual coding for faces. Results of studies display equivalent performances in recalling tasks and recognition tasks for faces and names This effects are different from those genraly observed with objects and words. Several explications were tested. Results are consistent with the hypothesis of dual coding for faces and for names. Person identity nodes proposed in models of face processing (Bruce et Young, 1986 ;Valentine, Brennen et Brédart, 1996) is common to the two types of information ; this system seems central to explain the effects. Moreover, lexicon for people's names is composite for somes faces, several names were adapted to code verbally it (actor's name and/or forename, name of character)

Full textAccording to psycholinguistic diary studies dedicated to the recovery of lexical units in the memory, names of people would be particularly difficult to recover compared to other kinds of proper names and to common nouns. Moreover, this difference between names of people and other lexical categories would be stronger for old people. Considering the lack of laboratory studies aiming at evaluating the validity of these results, we carried out two distinct laboratory experiments involving ± normal α subjects belonging to different age-groups. Both require an access to proper names (names of country and/or celebrities) and to common nouns (names of fruits or objects). The first experiment implies a task of verbal fluency, and the second one on a task of naming from photographs, with semantic and phonological priming. The data collected support the results of diary investigations. Wether one considers the number of correct answers (experiment 1), the reaction times or the rates of tip-of-the-tongue states (experiment 2), the names of people generate less good results than the other types of lexical units. This tendency is more massive for old people. Furthermore, the second experiment opens up prospects to test a cognitive interpretation of the relative difficulty to access the names of people (Burke et al. , 1991)

It isolates two productive syntactic patterns: in predicates, the values of WULI are specified by indices which give information on the number of actants in the process described, while in noun phrases, they rely on the semantics of the noun to wich WULI is connected by three syntactic forms: 1) by means of the genitive particle (WULluy N) in which a personalised relationship with the speaker IS expressed; 2) orthographically by a space (1WULI N) which can be interpreted as the inclusion of the speaker in a micro-group specified by the noun ; 3) by a fusion (WULIN) which defines the national links of the speaker. This study combines the Issues of number and of identity with respect to the collective person and shows that the frequent use of WULI indicates an discours strategy of self-reference: the speaker identifying himself through an inclusion in a group

Full textBased on a corpus of more than 30 000 anthroponomical chains extracted mainly from original and unpublished documents, this thesis is a study on the Romance personal names of Lorraine from the XIth to the XVIIth century in a linguistic perspective. Each personal name is the subject of an article : historical data, classified according to formal criteria, are followed by an etymological note. The comment can be, for example, a discussion about the geographical distribution of old mentions or a lexicological study in the case of a delexical personal name. An analysis of the modern and contemporary surnames can sometimes follow. The article ends with a map of the data when this contributes to the analysis of the personal name. A thematic synthesis studies the fossilization of the second element in surname, the detoponomical and the compound anthroponyms, but especially anthroponomy's contribution to other domains of linguistics
