Abstract:
This is a study of the computing power of the subtyping machine behind Kennedy and Pierce's nominal subtyping with variance. We depict the lattice of fragments of Kennedy and Pierce's type system and characterize their computing power in terms of regular, context-free, deterministic, and non-deterministic tree languages. Based on the theory, we present Treetop---a generator of C# implementations of subtyping machines. The software artifact constitutes the first feasible (yet POC) fluent API generator to support context-free API protocols in a decidable type system fragment.

Abstract:
This research is aimed to analyze sentence fragments in a comic. The main research questions raised in this paper are: What types of sentence fragments can be seen in comic Hunter X Hunter by Yoshihiro Togashi 1998? What factor types can be found in comic Hunter X Hunter by Yoshihiro Togashi 1998? The paper uses the qualitative method to conduct content and document analysis (Choy & Clark, 2010). The source of data was the comic entitled ‘Hunter X Hunter in which the researchers discovered six forms of Sentence Fragments after studying the data: fragments of adjective clause, adverbial clause, nominal clause, appositive, infinitive clauses, missing subject, participial, and prepositional phrase fragments. The information was gathered from 30 chapters of Yoshihiro's comic. There were 34 Sentence Fragments, 13 (38%) Dependent clause fragment, 21(62%) into-phrase fragment. There are 6 types of sentence Fragment factors that were investigated by Bashir (2016), but in this comic only 4 factors were found; namely, Omission of the Verb (50%), Subject (20%), and Object (10%), omission of both subject and verb (10%), and Appositive or list Fragments (10%).

We investigate universal algebra over the category Nom of nominal sets. Using the fact that Nom is a full reflective subcategory of a monadic category, we obtain an HSP-like theorem for algebras over nominal sets. We isolate a ‘uniform’ fragment of our equational logic, which corresponds to the nominal logics present in the literature. We give semantically invariant translations of theories for nominal algebra and NEL into ‘uniform’ theories, and systematically prove HSP theorems for models of these theories.

Abstract:
Abstract Species richness of terrestrial isopods is high in caves of the Dinaric Karst, which hosts ~10% of the world’s nominal oniscidean troglobionts. The most widespread taxon is the southern European genus Alpioniscus, which consists of two subgenera: Alpioniscus s.s. and Illyrionethes. Before this study, 14 nominal troglobiotic Illyrionethes taxa were recorded from the Dinaric Karst. Our molecular analyses using two mitochnodrial DNA (16S rRNA and COI) fragments and a nuclear gene (H3) fragment on all known Dinaric taxa identified three distinct lineages: strasseri-, heroldi- and magnus-lineage. Our results confirmed the validity of most nominal species. The exceptions are Alpioniscus balthasari, which consists of two different species including Alpioniscus iapodicus, and Alpioniscus heroldi, which is paraphyletic with respect to Alpioniscus bosniensis. The strasseri-lineage was highly supported by all phylogenetic methods used; therefore, we performed a detailed morphological analysis to distinguish and characterize the species of this group. New morphological characters, such as body part ratios, are proposed for future species identification. In addition, we redescribe three known species (Alpioniscus strasseri, Alpioniscus christiani and Alpioniscus balthasari) and describe two new ones (Alpioniscus hirci sp. nov. and Alpioniscus velebiticus sp. nov.). As a result, 15 nominal species of Illyrionethes are currently known from the Dinaric Karst.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the case of bare-(pro)nominal fragment answers, and specifically the issues that arise in analyzing the case of fragment DPs from subject questions. I adopt a middle ground approach between competing theories of nonsententials—namely the Ellipsis Approach (Merchant 2004) and the approach of Direct Interpretation (Barton & Progovac 2005)—and propose fragment DPs to be derived from a null vP. For their case forms, I compare two different theories of case—assignment by functional heads and Dependent Case Theory—and hypothesize that fragment DPs construed as the internal argument are realized in dependent case for nominative-accusative languages. Fragment DPs construed as the external argument would be found in their default case form, which is language-specific. Fragment answer data from English, Korean, and Serbian is used to provide crosslinguistic support for this null vP analysis and discussion of case.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT We have developed web-based software for the rapid identification of protein biomarkers of bacterial microorganisms. Proteins from bacterial cell lysates were ionized by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI), mass isolated, and fragmented using a tandem time of flight (TOF-TOF) mass spectrometer. The sequence-specific fragment ions generated were compared to a database of in silico fragment ions derived from bacterial protein sequences whose molecular weights are the same as the nominal molecular weights of the protein biomarkers. A simple peak-matching and scoring algorithm was developed to compare tandem mass spectrometry (MS-MS) fragment ions to in silico fragment ions. In addition, a probability-based significance-testing algorithm (P value), developed previously by other researchers, was incorporated into the software for the purpose of comparison. The speed and accuracy of the software were tested by identification of 10 protein biomarkers from three Campylobacter strains that had been identified previously by bottom-up proteomics techniques. Protein biomarkers were identified using (i) their peak-matching scores and/or P values from a comparison of MS-MS fragment ions with all possible in silico N and C terminus fragment ions (i.e., ions a, b, b-18, y, y-17, and y-18), (ii) their peak-matching scores and/or P values from a comparison of MS-MS fragment ions to residue-specific in silico fragment ions (i.e., in silico fragment ions resulting from polypeptide backbone fragmentation adjacent to specific residues [aspartic acid, glutamic acid, proline, etc.]), and (iii) fragment ion error analysis, which distinguished the systematic fragment ion error of a correct identification (caused by calibration drift of the second TOF mass analyzer) from the random fragment ion error of an incorrect identification.

Abstract:
Abstract Necromys is a genus of sigmodontine rodent that inhabits grasslands and scrublands in South America. Eight extant species are recognized in the genus; one of these is Necromys lactens, which inhabits high-elevation grasslands in the Yungas from south-central Bolivia to northwestern Argentina. Morphological variation in N. lactens has been recognized by the description of three nominal forms. Geographically structured genetic diversity also has been observed, but a thorough revision of these nominal forms within an integrative framework has yet to be performed. We conducted a phylogeographic assessment based on an 801 base-pair fragment of the cytochrome-b gene that guided morphometric analyses (univariate and multivariate comparisons) of patterns of geographic variation in the species, and the distinction of its nominal forms. Haplotypes of N. lactens form a well-supported and geographically structured clade. Within it, there are two main clades; haplotypes from the northern range form a well-supported clade, sister and allopatric to a weakly supported southern clade, which includes variants collected at or near the type localities of three nominal forms. In turn, both main clades are composed by two allopatric subclades. Morphometric analyses indicated no differences in shape of the skull among the three nominal forms or between the recovered clades and subclades. Taking together all the available evidence, we consider N. lactens to be a monotypic species.

Abstract An analysis of nominal vs idiotope antigen-induced B cell precursors was performed in A/St mice. With the use of the splenic fragment culture system, the quantity and quality of B cell precursors responding to two anti-idiotope carrier antigens (4C11 hemocyanin and F6 hemocyanin) and nominal antigen (phosphorylcholine-hemocyanin) were compared. In addition, the effect of priming with anti-idiotope-carrier antigens on B cell precursors responding to phosphorylcholine-hemocyanin was determined. We found that one anti-idiotope-carrier antigen, 4C11-hemocyanin, and phosphorylcholine-hemocyanin stimulated similar subpopulations of primary B cells. However, the B cell population stimulated by F6-hemocyanin, the other anti-idiotype complex, was distinct. Furthermore, priming with certain idiotope antigens can direct the phosphorylcholine-hemocyanin response into the expression of idiotypes that may be the most effective in protective immunity. Our results provide essential information for the rational design of idiotype vaccines by clarifying the dynamic relationship of the B cell precursor repertoire with the in vivo antibody response in the response to nominal and idiotope antigens.

In this paper, we applied the Langevin dynamical model to investigate the different aspects of the [Formula: see text]O+[Formula: see text]Pt reaction. Elongation and orientation degree of freedom ([Formula: see text] coordinate) which are the first and second dimensions of dynamical calculations, are presented here. Fission time, fission cross-section, pre-scission neutron multiplicity, and fission probability were calculated using one- and two-dimensional Langevin equations. Also, anisotropy of fission-fragments angular distribution has been investigated based on the transition state model, one- and two-dimensional Langevin dynamical models. It was found that by adding the orientation degree of freedom to calculations, the fission time and pre-scission neutrons multiplicity increases whereas fission cross-section, and fission probability decreases. The two-dimensional dynamical calculations are a better match to the experimental data than the one-dimensional dynamical calculations, when using nominal values for the reduced dissipation coefficient and shape-dependent level density parameter. However, if model parameters are adjusted to reproduce the fission cross-section data, then both the one- and two-dimensional models give a satisfactory match to the fission fragment anisotropy data. Nonequilibrium [Formula: see text] distributions in the dynamical model can better explain the experimental anisotropy of the angular distribution of fission-fragments with respect to the equilibrium [Formula: see text] distribution in saddle and scission point transition state models.

Abstract:
Abstract The exotoxins of certain strains of Staphylococcus aureus strains are able both to stimulate potent proliferation and induce anergy in T lymphocytes expressing the appropriate T cell Ag receptor V beta gene elements. Although T cell activation by the S. aureus enterotoxins requires the presence of accessory cells bearing class II Ag of the MHC, unlike the peptide fragments of nominal Ag, they contact the external surfaces of both the class II MHC and TCR molecules. This paper investigates the immunologically active domains of S. aureus enterotoxin B (SEB) using truncated fragments of rSEB expressed as a fusion protein with protein A. The results of the experiments reported here indicate that the minimal fragment of SEB able to stimulate and induce anergy in hemagglutinin-reactive human T cells expressing V beta 3.1 gene elements is located in the amino-terminal portion of the molecule within residues 1-138. Deletion of the first 30 amino acid residues renders rSEB unable to stimulate T cells expressing V beta 3.1, whereas polyclonal T cells still respond to this molecule. This implies that the stimulation of several TCR-V beta families may be caused by the interaction with different regions of the toxin. The localization of immunologically active sites in the bacterial enterotoxins is needed to investigate both their biology and potential application as immunomodulatory agents.

Abstract Patients who undergo immunotherapy with a murine anti-colon carcinoma mAb (mAb17-1A) generate high titers of anti-idiotype and anti-isotype antibodies. Specifically selected anti-idiotypic antibodies that elicit in vivo a humoral and a cellular immune response against the nominal Ag can be used as surrogate Ag for immunization. We established from the B lymphocytes of a treated patient a series of EBV-transformed cell lines. Three weeks after immortalization, the cells were selected for production of antibodies (Ab2) against the Fab fragment of the murine mAb17-1A. The selected cells were cloned and screened by ELISA for specific anti-mAb17-1A idiotypic antibodies. Thirty-six out of 89 clones were anti-idiotypes. Cell culture supernatants and the purified Ig derived from 10 clones completely inhibited the specific binding of radiolabeled mAb17-1A to HT-29 colon carcinoma cells thus resembling Ab2-gamma anti-idiotypes. These cell lines which grow now in culture for 18 mo, continuously secrete IgG,K anti-Ab1-idiotype mAb. Human anti-idiotypic mAb might be candidates for vaccines when the nominal Ag itself is not available or cannot be used as such.

A new species of the miniaturised microhylid frog genus Stumpffia, from north-western Madagascar, is described. Stumpffia froschauerisp. nov. differs from all other described Stumpffia species in colouration and morphology and is genetically divergent (≥ 7% uncorrected p-distance to all other nominal species of the genus) in a fragment of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene and in a segment of the nuclear Rag-1 gene. The new species is reliably known only from a few specimens collected in the Sahamalaza (and surroundings) region. Its known distribution is limited to three forest patches severely threatened by fire, drought and high levels of forest clearance, thus suggesting a classification of “Critically Endangered” according to IUCN Red List criteria.

Abstract. Further development and optimisation of a previously described ion trap aerosol mass spectrometer (IT-AMS) are presented, which resulted in more reproducible and robust operation and allowed for the instrument's first field deployment. Results from this 11-day-long measurement indicate that the instrument is capable of providing quantitative information on organics, nitrate, and sulfate mass concentrations with reasonable detection limits (0.5–1.4 µg m−3 for 1 h averages) and that results obtained with the IT-AMS can directly be related to those from Aerodyne aerosol mass spectrometers. The capability of the IT-AMS to elucidate the structure of fragment ions is demonstrated via an MS4 study on tryptophan. Detection limits are demonstrated to be sufficiently low to allow for MS2 studies not only in laboratory but also in field measurements under favourable conditions or with the use of an aerosol concentrator. In laboratory studies the capability of the IT-AMS to differentiate [C4Hy]+ and [C3HyO]+ fragments at the nominal m∕z 55 and 57 via their characteristic fragmentation patterns in MS2 experiments is demonstrated. Furthermore, with the IT-AMS it is possible to distinguish between fragments of the same elemental composition ([C2H4O2]+ at m∕z 60 and [C3H5O2]+ at m∕z 73) originating from different compound classes (carboxylic acids and sugars) due to their different molecular structure. These findings constitute a proof of concept and could provide a new means of distinguishing between these two compound classes in ambient organic aerosol.

ABSTRACT DNA barcoding proposes that a fragment of DNA can be used to identify species. In fish, a fragment of cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) has been effective in many studies with different foci. Here we use this molecular tool to provide new insights into the cryptic diversity found in the Hoplias malabaricus species complex. Popularly known as trahira, H. malabaricus is widely distributed in South America. The clade shows molecular and cytogenetic diversity, and several studies have supported the occurrence of a complex of species. We performed molecular and karyotypic analysis of H. malabaricus individuals from eight Amazonian localities to assess the diversity present in the nominal taxon, and to clarify relationships within this group. We used 12 samples in cytogenetic analyses and found two karyomorphs: 2n = 40 (20m + 20sm) (karyomorph C) and 2n = 42 (22m + 20sm) (karyomorph A). We used 19 samples in molecular analyses with COI as a molecular marker, maximum likelihood analyses, and the Kimura-2-parameter evolutionary model with bootstrap support. We found karyomorph-related differentiation with bootstrap of 100%. However, we found high molecular diversity within karyomorph C. The observed pattern allowed us to infer the presence of cryptic diversity, reinforcing the existence of a species complex.

Abstract:
Background Currently, 58 species are assigned to the genus Allobates, with 70% of its diversity described just in the last two decades, with many additional species likely unnamed. The continuous description of these new species represents a fundamental step for resolving the taxonomy and ensuring the future conservation of the genus. Methods Using molecular, acoustic, and morphological evidences, we describe a new species of Allobates from Teles Pires River region, southern Amazonia, and provide accounts on the population of A. tapajos found sympatrically with the new species. Results The new species is distinguished from its congeners by the coloration of thighs, venter, dorsum, and dark lateral stripe. It has four types of calls, with advertisement calls formed by relatively long trills with a mean duration of 2.29 s ± 0.65, mean of 39.93 notes ± 11.18 emitted at a mean rate of 17.49 ± 0.68 notes per second, and mean dominant frequency of 5,717 Hz ± 220.81. The genetic distance between the new species and its congeners in a fragment of the 16S mitochondrial fragment ranged between 13.2% (A. carajas) to 21.3% (A. niputidea). The sympatric Allobates population fits its morphology and acoustic with the nominal A. tapajos, but presents a relatively high genetic distance of nearly 6.5%, raising questions on the current taxonomy of this species.

Abstract:
The freshwater shrimp Macrobrachium australiense is distributed throughout the majority of inland, north-west, north-east and eastern drainages. Owing to the large amount of morphological divergence, both between and within catchments, this species has proven to be taxonomically difficult and, until recently, consisted of three separate species, each with subsequent subspecies. This study uses nucleotide sequences from the 16S rRNA mitochondrial gene region to investigate the genetic relationships between populations and confirm the taxonomic status of M. australiense. The results from sequencing an approximately 450-bp fragment from this gene region from M. australiense sampled from 12 locations across inland, eastern and northern Australia identified very little variation. The variation found between 16S M. australiense haplotypes is much less than that found between Macrobrachium species, indicating that it is in fact a single species. The results are concordant with a recent morphological revision of Australian species in which nominal taxa of the M. australiense complex were synonymised.

Adults were identified as belonging to 45 families, 140 genera and 209 species and morphospecies (101 nominal species and 108 morphotypes). Forty-one species were recorded for the first time from the state of Paraná, most of them belonging to Araneidae (14), Oonopidae (4), Theridiidae (4), and Uloboridae (3). Conifaber guarani Grismado, 2004 and Oonops nigromaculatus Mello- Leitão, 1944 were recorded for the first time from Brazil. These results place Paraná as the sixth state with the highest number of records of spiders from Brazil, currently 465 species. This study increases in 10% the number of species recorded from Paraná, and the Atlantic Forest fragment becomes one of the most well sampled areas in the state, with 20% of all known species in Paraná.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Detection and enumeration of Cryptosporidium parvum in both treated and untreated waters are important to facilitate prevention of future cryptosporidiosis incidents. Immunomagnetic separation (IMS)-fluorescent antibody (FA) detection and IMS-PCR detection efficiencies were evaluated in two natural waters seeded with nominal seed doses of 5, 10, and 15 oocysts. IMS-FA detected oocysts at concentrations at or below the three nominal oocyst seed doses, illustrating that IMS-FA is sensitive enough to detect low oocyst numbers. However, the species of the oocysts could not be determined with this technique. IMS-PCR, targeting the 18S rRNA gene in this study, yielded positive amplification for 17 of the 18 seeded water samples, and the amplicons were subjected to restriction fragment length polymorphism digestion and DNA sequencing for species identification. Interestingly, the two unseeded, natural water samples were also PCR positive; one amplicon was the same base pair size as the C. parvum amplicon, and the other amplicon was larger. These two amplified products were determined to be derived from DNA of Cryptosporidium muris and a dinoflagellate. These IMS-PCR results illustrate that (i) IMS-PCR is able to detect low oocyst numbers in natural waters, (ii) PCR amplification alone is not confirmatory for detection of target DNA when environmental samples are used, (ii) PCR primers, especially those designed against the rRNA gene region, need to be evaluated for specificity with organisms closely related to the target organism, and (iv) environmental amplicons should be subjected to appropriate species-specific confirmatory techniques.

Abstract Boana atlantica was described based on morphological characters to acommodate populations from Bahia state, Brazil, previously referred to as B. punctata. However, its taxonomic validity is questionable due to inconsistencies in bioacoustic data. Here, we integrate molecular, cytogenetic and morphological data to re-evaluate the taxonomic status of B. atlantica. Molecular analyses provided strong support for the hypothesis that B. atlantica is a valid species, being, however, nominal populations from Bahia state paraphyletic with respect to individuals of B. atlantica collected in Alagoas and Pernambuco states. These populations shown high genetic divergence in the 16S rRNA mitochondrial fragment, and we consider populations from Alagoas and Pernambuco as a putative new candidate species of Boana punctata group. The external and internal morphology of the tadpoles of these lineages were similar, but Nucleolar Organizer Regions (NOR) was sited in different chromosomes. Our results indicate that B. atlantica is paraphyletic and may be a complex of species. Morphological of adult and/or bioacoustical data should be further assessed to find diagnostic characters to tease these lineages apart and name them properly.

Abstract:
The subfamily Phlebotominae comprises important insects for public health. The use of complementary tools such as molecular taxonomy is necessary for interspecific delimitation and/or discovery of cryptic species. Here, we evaluated the DNA barcoding tool to identify different species in the southwestern Brazilian Amazon. For this, we collected sand flies in forest fragments along the highway BR-317, in the municipality of Brasiléia, state of Acre, Brazil. The specimens were DNA-barcoded using a fragment of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. The sequences were analyzed to generate K2P pairwise genetic distances and a Neighbour-joining tree. The sand fly barcodes were also clustered into Molecular Operation Taxonomic Units (MOTU) using Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery (ABGD) approach. A total of 59 COI sequences comprising 22 nominal species and ten genera were generated. Of these, 11 species had not been sequenced before, thus being new COI sequences to science. Intraspecific genetic distances ranged between 0 and 4.9%, with Pintomyia serrana presenting the highest values of genetic distance, in addition to having been partitioned into three MOTUs. Regarding the distances to the nearest neighbour, all species present higher values in relation to the maximum intraspecific distance, in addition to forming well supported clusters in the neighbour-joining analysis. The DNA barcoding approach is useful for the molecular identification of sand flies from Brasiléia, state of Acre, and was efficient in detecting cryptic diversity of five species which can be confirmed in future studies using an integrative approach. We also generated new COI barcodes for Trichophoromyia auraensis, Nyssomyia shawi, and Psychodopygus paraensis, which may play a role in the transmission of Leishmania spp. in the Brazilian Amazon.

Abstract:
Abstract Identification of compounds in mixtures of environmental contaminants or synthetic products is essential for regulatory analyses. Exact masses of ions determined by high resolution mass spectrometry provide unique elemental compositions only for low-mass ions (<150 Da). Using mass peak profiling from selected-ion recording data (MPPSIRD) to acquire additional mass spectral data and a profile generation model (PGM) for automated interpretation of the data, provides elemental compositions for ions with m/z up to 600, based on incontestable properties of atoms, their exact masses, isotopic abundances, and valences. In this study, MPPSIRD and a PGM were used to identify intended and unintended products resulting from attempted syntheses of 2 thermolabile, nonionic, phosphorothioate compounds. The products were volatilized from a probe inserted into a VG70-250SE double-focusing mass spectrometer. High mass resolution substituted separation in the mass domain for the temporal separation of most components provided by chromatographic techniques. MPPSIRD and the PGM identified the correct composition for M+• by rejecting all other compositions that were possible within the error limits of the exact mass determinations for M+• MPPSIRD was used with 10 000-24 000 resolution to determine exact masses of ions prominent in mass spectra and to isolate signals from different ions with the same nominal mass. Superposition of volatilization peaks of ions and linked scans (constant magnetic field to electrostatic sector voltage ratio) correlated fragment ions with the molecular ion. The PGM determined the compositions of fragment ions, using the number of atoms of each element in the molecular ion as limits. Fragmentation schemes based on these ions and the tables of exact masses and relative abundances provided a preponderance of evidence for the product identities.

Abstract:
Reliable identification of species is important for protecting native ecosystems against the invasion of non-native species. DNA barcoding using molecular markers, such as the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene, helps researchers distinguish species. In this study, we focused on introduced veronicellid slugs in the Ryukyu Islands and some greenhouses on mainland Japan. Some veronicellids are medium-to-high risk pest species for humans. Identifying veronicellid species by their external morphology is difficult and unreliable because there is substantial overlap between intraspecific variation and interspecific differentiation. Therefore, internal morphologies such as male genitalia have been the primary traits used to distinguish veronicellids. To identify introduced veronicellid slugs in Japan to the species level, we used morphological assessment of male genitalia and DNA barcoding of the standard COI gene fragment. We also conducted species-delimitation analyses based on the genetic data. The results showed that five evolutionarily significant units, corresponding to four nominal species inhabit the Ryukyu Islands, of which two species were also found in the greenhouses of mainland Japan, including the first record of Sarasinula plebeia in Japan. The presence of non-native slug species could increase the transmission of parasites in Japan.

Abstract:
Abstract Genetic connectivity plays a crucial role in shaping the geographic structure of species. Our aim in this study was to explore the pattern of genetic connectivity in Bursa scrobilator, an iconic marine caenogastropod with long-lived pelagic larvae. Our study was based on the analysis of DNA sequence data for the 658-bp barcoding fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. This is the largest DNA sequence dataset assembled to date for B. scrobilator. These data confirm that the two recently described subspecies B. scrobilator scrobilator (Linnaeus, 1758), from the Mediterranean and Macaronesia, and B. s. coriacea (Reeve, 1844), from West Africa, constitute two evolutionarily significant units (ESUs). We found that for the nominal subspecies, the variation in morphology (shell, radula and gross anatomy) and DNA sequences was not geographically structured, and this agrees with what we would expect in a species with high connectivity at the larval stage. The divergence between the two subspecies cannot be easily explained by isolation by distance, and we would argue that one or more extrinsic factors may have played a role in isolating the two ESUs and maintaining that isolation.

Abstract:
Two nominal species of freshwater mussels, Pyganodon cataracta (Say, 1817) (eastern floater) and Pyganodon fragilis (Lamarck, 1819) (Newfoundland floater), occur in Atlantic Canada, but their taxonomic status has been controversial. We analyzed the female-transmitted mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (i.e., FCOI) and nuclear internal transcribed spacer region (ITS-1) gene sequences, as well as multilocus amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers, to evaluate genetic variation in Pyganodon specimens from Atlantic Canada. We found that Pyganodon samples from this region displayed no or extremely low (i.e., <0.5%) genetic divergence for ITS-1 and FCOI sequence data, respectively. Inferences from nested clade analysis of FCOI haplotypes suggest restricted gene flow with isolation by distance and contiguous range expansion. Analysis of molecular variance inferred from presence or absence of nuclear-encoded AFLP bands showed moderate geographic structuring among provinces but no correspondence between mtDNA haplotypes and AFLP profiles. Similarly, there was no correspondence between presence of a single or a double loop on the umbo and FCOI haplotype. These mtDNA and AFLP markers demonstrate limited genetic differentiation within the Pyganodon cataracta–Pyganodon fragilis freshwater mussel complex in Atlantic Canada and question the species-level distinctness of these putative taxa.

Abstract:
Tandem mass spectral databases are indispensable for fast and reliable compound identification in nontargeted analysis with liquid chromatography–high resolution tandem mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS/MS), which is applied to a wide range of scientific fields. While many articles now review and compare spectral libraries, in this manuscript we investigate two high-quality and specialized collections from our respective institutes, recorded on different instruments (quadrupole time-of-flight or QqTOF vs. Orbitrap). The optimal range of collision energies for spectral comparison was evaluated using 233 overlapping compounds between the two libraries, revealing that spectra in the range of CE 20–50 eV on the QqTOF and 30–60 nominal collision energy units on the Orbitrap provided optimal matching results for these libraries. Applications to complex samples from the respective institutes revealed that the libraries, combined with a simple data mining approach to retrieve all spectra with precursor and fragment information, could confirm many validated target identifications and yield several new Level 2a (spectral match) identifications. While the results presented are not surprising in many ways, this article adds new results to the debate on the comparability of Orbitrap and QqTOF data and the application of spectral libraries to yield rapid and high-confidence tentative identifications in complex human and environmental samples.

Abstract:
Abstract This study was undertaken to distinguish between several mechanisms responsible for graft-vs-host disease (GVHD) protection in anti-CD3epsilonF(ab')2 fragment (Fr)-treated recipients: TCR down-modulation, deletion, failure of expansion, or anergy induction. To quantify alloreactive T cell expansion and function, thoracic duct lymphocytes (TDL) were analyzed. Sixfold fewer donor TDL T cells were recoverable from anti-CD3epsilonF(ab')2 Fr as compared with irrelevant F(ab')2 Fr-treated recipients at the time of peak T cell expansion in vivo. Kinetic analysis revealed that donor T cell expansion was inhibited and not simply delayed by anti-CD3epsilonF(ab')2 Fr. Similar proportions of TDL T cells in irrelevant and anti-CD3epsilonF(ab')2 Fr were undergoing apoptosis. Although TCR modulation was observed, donor TDL T cells had intact anti-host alloresponses as compared with irrelevant F(ab')2 Fr-treated recipients. Because donor CD4+ T cells are primarily responsible for GVHD in this model, an adoptive transfer system was used in which the function and kinetics of expansion of OVA-specific CD4+ TCR transgenic cells could be physically tracked. Relevant Fr severely blunted CD4+ TCR transgenic T cell clonal expansion after OVA administration. Nonviable transgenic and nontransgenic T cells were proportionally similar in OVA-pulsed recipients, regardless of whether relevant or irrelevant F(ab')2 Fr were given. After discontinuing Fr, transgenic T cells were found to have intact in vitro OVA-specific responses. Our current and previous results suggest that reduced donor T cell expansion and T cell depletion both contribute to GVHD protection by anti-CD3epsilonF(ab')2 Fr. These data have implications for designing therapeutic approaches directed toward TCR targeting in humans.

Abstract:
Abstract A major problem with current cancer vaccines is that the induction of CD8 immune responses is rarely associated with antitumor benefits mainly due to the multiple immune suppressions in the established tumor lesions. In this study, we investigated if and how activation of endogenous CD4 T cells could be achieved to relieve the suppressive tumor milieu. We engineered a lentivector to express a nominal fusion Ag composed of HBsAg and IgG2a Fc fragment (HBS-Fc-lv) to increase the magnitude of CD8 response, but more importantly, to induce effective CD4 co-activation. We found that, remarkably, HBS-Fc-lv immunization caused significant regression of established tumors. Immunological analysis revealed that HBS-Fc-lv immunization markedly increased the number of functional CD8 and CD4 T cells and the level of Th1/Tc1-like cytokines in the tumor, while substantially decreased Treg ratio. The favorable immunologic changes in tumor lesions and the improvement of antitumor effects from HBS-Fc-lv immunization were dependent on the Fc receptor mediated CD4 activation. Adoptive transfer of the CD4 T cells from the HBS-Fc-lv immunized mice could activate endogenous CD8 T cells via IFNgamma and CD40L dependent manner. We conclude that endogenous CD4 T cells can be activated by lentivector expressing Fc tagged Ag to provide another layer of help, i.e. creating a pro-inflammatory milieu within the tumor lesion to help the effector phase of immune responses to enhance the antitumor effect.

Abstract:
We describe a new species of arboreal microhylid frog, genus Platypelis, from northeastern Madagascar and report the expansion of distribution ranges of two other species. Platypelis laetussp. nov. is small to medium-sized (24.3–25.6 mm snout-vent length) compared to other Platypelis, exhibits a greenish colored throat and was found in bamboo forest of the Sorata Massif. Its advertisement call consists of a single short tonal note repeated at regular intervals in long call series. Based on DNA sequences of a fragment of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene, the new species was placed in a clade with Platypelis olgae from the Tsaratanana Massif, and with two other, unconfirmed candidate species from the Sorata Massif and from Andravory, herein named Platypelis sp. Ca12 and Ca13. Molecular divergences among these lineages were substantial, amounting to 7.6‒8.1% uncorrected 16S p-distance to the closest nominal species, P. olgae, from which the new species is also distinguished by a lack of allele sharing in the nuclear RAG-1 gene. We also provide new records of Platypelis alticola and P. tsaratananaensis from the Sorata Massif, supported by molecular analysis. This confirms a wider distribution of these two species that previously were considered to be endemic to the Tsaratanana Massif. However, their populations in Sorata were characterized by a certain degree of genetic differentiation from Tsaratanana populations suggesting they require more detailed taxonomic assessment.

Abstract:
Four new species of troglomorphic Coecobrya Yosii, 1956 are described from caves located in the central and northeastern regions of Thailand. Coecobrya whittenisp. nov. and C. troglobiasp. nov. are from Khon Kaen province, C. ellisisp. nov. is from Phetchabun province and C. phitsanulokensissp. nov. is from Phitsanulok province. They all exhibit remarkable troglobitic characters i.e. elongated antennae, legs and furca, slender claw complex and large body size. Coecobrya whittenisp. nov. is similar to C. troglobiasp. nov. and they were found a distance of only 3.4 km from each other. However, they are mainly different in the number of An mac on dorsal head and number of chaetae of Th. II. Likewise, C. ellisisp. nov. is similar to C. phitsanulokensissp. nov.. However, they differ in the number of An mac on the dorsal head, the number of central mac on Abd. II, central mac on Abd. IV, lateral mac on Abd. IV and the number of inner teeth of the claw. Moreover, C. ellisisp. nov. has orange pigment dots on the body, a unique character, considering that all other troglomorphic Coecobrya species in Thailand are devoid of pigmentation. The results of the molecular approach based on two partial mitochondrial markers (COI and 16S rDNA) and a nuclear gene fragment (28S rDNA) supported the results of morphological species discrimination in separating the four nominal populations as valid species. An updated dichotomous key of Thai troglomorphic Coecobrya species is also given.

Abstract:
Studies were conducted to address further the role(s) of antigen processing and presentation in the induction of immune responses in a phylogenetically lower vertebrate, specifically a teleost, the channel catfish. In particular, studies were aimed at determining the subcellular compartments involved in antigen degradation by channel catfish antigen-presenting cells (APC) as well as ascertaining the reexpression of immunogenic peptides on the surfaces of APC. The results showed that exogenous protein antigens were actively endocytosed by APC as detected by flow cytometry. Use of radiolabeled antigen and subcellular fractionation protocols also showed that antigen localized in endosomes/lysosomes. Furthermore, there was an apparent redistribution of antigen between these organelles and the plasma membrane during the course of antigen pulsing. Functional assays for the induction ofin vitroantigen-specific proliferation of immune catfish peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL) showed that membrane preparations from antigen-pulsed autologous APC were highly stimulatory. The magnitude of responses elicited with such membrane preparations was very similar to that of PBL cultures stimulated with native antigen-pulsed and fixed intact APC or prefixed intact APC incubated with a peptide fragment of the nominal antigen. Current data further corroborate our previous findings that steps akin to antigen processing and presentation are clearly important in the induction of immune responses in lower vertebrates like fish, in a manner similar to that seen in mammalian systems. Consequently, it would appear that many immune functions among the diverse taxa of vertebrates are remarkably conserved.

Abstract:
The taxonomic status of the strabomantid frog species Pristimantis nebulosus (Henle, 1992), originating from the southern Cordillera Azul in central Peru, is investigated based on examination of the holotype and its comparison with freshly collected topotypic material. Following current standards, we provide a redescription of the holotype. It is in a rather poor state and exhibits certain damages and preservation artifacts, conditions that have hampered an allocation of this nominal taxon to any known living population of Pristimantis in the past. Our detailed specimen-to-specimen comparison provided morphological evidence for the conspecifity of the holotype and freshly collected topotypes. Molecular phylogenetic analysis, based on the mitochondrial 16S gene fragment places P. nebulosus in the P. conspicillatus species group, being closely related to P. bipunctatus and an undescribed candidate species from the Cordillera de Carpish. From both, P. nebulosus differs by considerable divergence in the 16S gene (p-distance 4.1–6.2%). Based on the specimens available, we provide an updated diagnosis for P. nebulosus, compare it to other species in the P. conspicillatus group and describe its advertisement call. In addition, we describe and name the closely related candidate species from the Cordillera de Carpish. It is sister to P. bipunctatus and P. nebulosus, but differs from both mainly by its tuberculate dorsal skin (versus shagreen) and divergence in the 16S gene (3.3–4.1%). We briefly discuss cryptic species diversity in the P. conspicillatus and P. danae species groups and provide justification for the description of a singleton species.

Abstract:
Introduction. Over the last decade’s studies on semantics of derivational morphemes have primarily dealt with contemporary language data. The article focuses on a group of Old Icelandic masculine nouns that are formed by means of the derivational suffix -skapr-. The aim is to model a fragment of the semantic field that is represented by the Old Icelandic derivatives with an abstract semantics and marked by the suffix -skapr- . Materials and methods. The source of material for the study is etymological dictionaries of the Old Icelandic language. The corpus of empirical material includes 86 lexical units. The study of the linguistic material draws on the methods of comparison, component and word-formation analysis, methods of etymological analysis, interpretation. Results. The corpus of masculine nouns belonging to the masculine a-declension, derived from nominal stems with the help of the suffix -skapr-, includes 86 units. The conceptual areas, verbalized by derivatives with the suffix under consideration, include designations of personal qualities of a person, character or method of action and its results, designation of specific objects, goods in a collective sense, types of relationships, designation of concepts related to religion, paganism or witchcraft. The most numerous group of designations covers the names of traits or behavior of a person, both encouraged and condemned by the members of society. It has been revealed that the same quality of a person’s character can be verbalized by a series of synonymous derivatives with the suffix -skapr-. Besides, a number of derivatives with the suffix display their syncretic semantics, involving both abstract and concrete meanings. The suffix -skapr- present in the morphological structure of the analyzed derivatives is etymologically related to the independent word skap “species, state”, which goes back to the Proto-Indo-European root *(s)keH. A series of derivatives, built according to the same word-formation type, allows us to consider this type as a separate format for representing knowledge, a kind of mental construct objectified by the suffix. The suffix in this analytic construct functions as a format marker. It is argued that the suffix under analysis marks the format that can be defined as “an abstract entity called by the base, conceived as an independent object in an absolutized form, i.e. in isolation from the real owner of this characteristics”. Conclusion. Derivatives with the word-formation suffix -skapr- represent a whole range of concepts related to the characteristics of a person and his activities. The word-formation suffix functions as a marker of the semantic invariant in the semantic structure of derivatives, which can be viewed as a profile of this word-formation type. The semantic filed indicated by the suffix is of a compositional nature due to the semantics of the components of the suffix itself.

Abstract:
Some manuscripts of the 11th and 12th centuries preserved in Catalonia present a specific rite when a bishop had to consecrate a church. In the altar he placed relics, three fragments of hosts, three grains of incense and small parchments on which was written the information about the consecration, the ten commandments and the beginning of the four gospels. The Catalan consecration ritual corresponded to a specific liturgical codification, the Catalan-Narbonne ordo, which is generally accepted to have been strictly followed. However, archaeological excavations carried out in pre-Romanesque and Romanesque churches in Catalonia since the 19th century have often brought to light a practice that was not codified in these texts: the modest containers of wood, stone or alabaster that contained the consecration relics had been engraved with names. This paper is dedicated to these nominal inscriptions from the consecration ritual, found inside the altars.

Abstract:
The stump-toed frogs of the Madagascar-endemic genus Stumpffia are mostly diminutive in size, but there is one group of comparatively large frogs within the genus, which we herein refer to as the Stumpffia hara species group. Each of the four known members of this species group is endemic to a single location of deciduous dry forest with exposed karstic limestone rock. Here, we report on the discovery of members of this species group on Montagne d’Ambre, a rainforest-covered extinct volcano in the North of Madagascar that has a rich Stumpffia fauna but has been thought to lack members of the S. hara species group until now. We found two members of the species group, one at the peak, and one in transitional and dry deciduous forest on the west and northern slopes of the mountain. The high-elevation species is new to science, and we here describe it as Stumpffia bishopisp. nov. It occupies a highly distinct position in the phylogeny of these frogs, characterized by ≥ 9.8% uncorrected pairwise distance from all other nominal Stumpffia in a fragment of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene. It is also the smallest of the members of the S. hara species group. Our genetic results show that the low-elevation species is Stumpffia megsoni, constituting a range expansion of that species and considerably expanding our understanding of its morphology and ecology. We report its advertisement call for the first time. Our results highlight the importance of continued surveys of even well-sampled localities, with special attention on the high elevation sites of northern massifs and collection of voucher specimens, and how much there still remains to understand about even the largest of Madagascar’s small frogs.

Abstract:
The subgenus Laurentomantis in the genus Gephyromantis contains some of the least known amphibian species of Madagascar. The six currently valid nominal species are rainforest frogs known from few individuals, hampering a full understanding of the species diversity of the clade. We assembled data on specimens collected during field surveys over the past 30 years and integrated analysis of mitochondrial and nuclear-encoded genes of 88 individuals, a comprehensive bioacoustic analysis, and morphological comparisons to delimit a minimum of nine species-level lineages in the subgenus. To clarify the identity of the species Gephyromantis malagasius, we applied a target-enrichment approach to a sample of the 110 year-old holotype of Microphryne malagasia Methuen and Hewitt, 1913 to assign this specimen to a lineage based on a mitochondrial DNA barcode. The holotype clustered unambiguously with specimens previously named G. ventrimaculatus. Consequently we propose to consider Trachymantis malagasia ventrimaculatus Angel, 1935 as a junior synonym of Gephyromantis malagasius. Due to this redefinition of G. malagasius, no scientific name is available for any of the four deep lineages of frogs previously subsumed under this name, all characterized by red color ventrally on the hindlimbs. These are here formally named as Gephyromantis fiharimpesp. nov., G. matsilosp. nov., G. oelkrugisp. nov., and G. portonaesp. nov. The new species are distinguishable from each other by genetic divergences of >4% uncorrected pairwise distance in a fragment of the 16S rRNA marker and a combination of morphological and bioacoustic characters. Gephyromantis fiharimpe and G. matsilo occur, respectively, at mid-elevations and lower elevations along a wide stretch of Madagascar’s eastern rainforest band, while G. oelkrugi and G. portonae appear to be more range-restricted in parts of Madagascar’s North East and Northern Central East regions. Open taxonomic questions surround G. horridus, to which we here assign specimens from Montagne d’Ambre and the type locality Nosy Be; and G. ranjomavo, which contains genetically divergent populations from Marojejy, Tsaratanana, and Ampotsidy.

Abstract:
In three experiments, subjects were asked to remember and forget study words. In line with previous studies, a directed forgetting effect was observed in a word-fragment completion task: Instructions to remember increased the completion of target fragments compared with instructions to forget (Experiment 1). Using the process dissociation procedure (Jacoby, 1991), it appeared that instructions to remember increased the estimates of intentional influences of memory but did not affect the estimates of automatic uses of memory (Experiments 1, 2 and 3). This suggests that directed forgetting effects in word-fragment completion reflect the surreptitious influence of explicit memory in a nominally implicit memory task. However, a meta-analysis indicated that directed forgetting instructions affected automatic and intentional influences of memory in opposite directions. This finding casts doubt on the assumption of independence between automatic and intentional uses of memory. The implications for use of the process dissociation procedure are discussed.

In every case, the cation protonation occurs at the N atom of the thiazole ring and the six-membered ring adopts a half-chair conformation (in some cases, the deviating methylene groups are disordered over two sets of sites). The C—N bond lengths of the nominal –NH+=C—NH2 fragment of the cation are indistinguishable, indicating a significant contribution of the –NH—C=N+H2 resonance form to the structure. The packing for (I)–(V) features a robust local R 2 2(8) loop motif in which the cation forms two near-linear N—H...O hydrogen bonds from the N+—H group and syn H atom of the amine group to the carboxylate group of an adjacent anion [(V) shows disorder of one of these bonds over N—H...O and N...H—O contributors but the same R 2 2(8) loop results for both disorder components]. The anti H atom of the –NH2 group also forms an N—H...O hydrogen bond, which results in [001] chains in (I) and (II), isolated centrosymmetric tetramers in (III) and [100] chains in (IV) and (V). Hirshfeld fingerprint plots and contact percentages for the different types of contacts of the cations are discussed.

Abstract:
The results of a numerical study of the gas-dynamic and power characteristics of the exhaust compartment of low-pressure cylinder, including the last stage with a blade of 1100 mm length and the exhaust path, in terms of their interaction are presented. Numerical models of exhaust compartment variants, including steam extraction in front of last stage diaphragm, two steam suctions from the interring gap with a dehumidification chamber, above-band leakages, steam injection from the dehumidification chamber into the diffuser channel have been developed. The flow in each computational subdomain is described by the complete system of non-stationary Reynolds – Favre equations averaged by Navier – Stokes. Turbulent effects are described with the SST Menter model in the stage, and with the modified Spalart – Allmaras turbulence model in the path. The integration of system of equations was carried out using an author’s software package. The calculated subdomains were approximated by hexagonal grids. The solver used an implicit difference TVD-scheme of finite volumes of the 2nd order of accuracy based on the solution of the Riemann problem. A variant of the algorithm based on splitting the computational process for multiprocessor platforms was used in the calculation. The model of stage used an averaging the mass, momentum and energy fluxes in the circumferential direction in the interstage gap. One channel of the diaphragm with a pre-connected fragment, as well as one channel of the working ring and the flow in the branch pipe were calculated. Parameters were exchanged between the stage and the branch pipe on the basis of mass flow averaging. The calculations were based on a table model of wet steam in the approximation of equilibrium condensation. The variants of improvement of the flow part of the exhaust compartment were considered. A study of the operation of the compartment options for the nominal mode of the K-220-44-2M turbine of the Loviisa nuclear power plant was performed. The effectiveness of lowering the cap of the collecting chamber, controlling the flow using sheet ribs above the diffuser shell, expanding the collecting chamber in the plane of the horizontal connector, and ensuring the release of excess steam from the moisture removal chamber through the tangential slots in the lower half of the convex shell of the diffuser were analyzed.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to improving the system of automatic control of modes of distribution electric networks containing solar power plants in order to achieve a simultaneous reduction of steady-state voltage deviations, voltage asymmetry at the terminals of consumers while maximizing the level of electricity generation by solar power plants. Ensuring normal permissible levels of electricity quality indicators in distribution networks is one of the most pressing issues that arise in the design and operation of modern distribution networks. Deterioration of the quality of electricity in electrical networks leads to the appearance of such negative phenomena, increase in additional losses in the elements of the electrical network, reduce the service life of electrical equipment, reduce the productivity of production equipment and others. The most significant negative impact on the functioning of the elements of electrical distribution networks, including electricity consumers, is observed with increasing levels of steady-state deviation and voltage asymmetry above the normative values. Modern solar inverters allow you to control the level of steady voltage deviation at the point of their connection to the mains. The design features of the construction of inverters of solar power plants allow them to change (within certain limits) not only the level of steady-state voltage deviation, but also to affect the level of voltage asymmetry and the parameters of the reactive power mode. In view of this, the task of improving automatic control systems for the distribution of electric networks with solar power plants, the implementation of which will take into account the multifunctional influence of solar inverters on the parameters of these networks is quite relevant. For the research, a fragment of a typical distribution electrical network with a nominal voltage of 10 kV was used, which contains a solar power plant that connects directly to the 10 kV busbars. The authors of the article set the problem of controlling the parameters of the mode of distribution electric network with solar power plants in the form of the problem of multicriteria optimization. An approach to solving this problem is also proposed, which is based on the method of solving problems of multicriteria optimization by approaching the utopian point in the space of criteria. Approximate calculations are carried out, which confirm the possibility of applying the proposed approach to the construction of systems for automatic control of the parameters of the mode of distribution electrical networks with solar power plants

Abstract:
The study reveals the reading and construal techniques employed in the process of textual entrenchment of indirect nominal groups. Entrenchment is characterized by the conventionalization of the nominal group form and the repeated referent construal scheme. The research discloses whether any repeated indirect nominal group use contributes to its entrenchment which is assessed in the oculographic experiment. It traces the eye-movement techniques and the reference identification index variations signifying the changes in the cognitive load distribution. To define the construal differences occurring in the first and repeated indirect nominal group use, we apply the system of parameters of focusing and process the parametric analysis of the text fragments. We initially hypothesized that the repeated indirect nominal group use will employ defocusing and repeated focusing schemes, however it also employed new focusing schemes. The changing roles of focusing and defocusing were evaluated oculographically and revealed the techniques of both cognitive load decrease and increase, with fixation duration decrease and stable reading regimes correlating with defocusing / repeated focusing, and identification index decrease and longer fixation duration correlating with new focusing. The results give evidence that textual entrenchment is in most cases accompanied by novel construal, and is constrained not solely by the number of repeated indirect nominal group uses but by its new roles in the text and referent construal.

Abstract:
So-called combined approaches answer a conjunctive query over a description logic ontology in three steps: first, they materialise certain consequences of the ontology and the data; second, they evaluate the query over the data; and third, they filter the result of the second phase to eliminate unsound answers. Such approaches were developed for various members of the DL-Lite and the EL families of languages, but none of them can handle ontologies containing nominals. In our work, we bridge this gap and present a combined query answering approach for ELHO--a logic that contains all features of the OWL 2 EL standard apart from transitive roles and complex role inclusions. This extension is nontrivial because nominals require equality reasoning, which introduces complexity into the first and the third step. Our empirical evaluation suggests that our technique is suitable for practical application, and so it provides a practical basis for conjunctive query answering in a large fragment of OWL 2 EL.

Abstract:
Nominal encapsulators, also referred to by other terms coined in the Spanish tradition (discursive labels), are textual cohesion devices, frequently used in journalistic discourse to condense and summarize the predicative contents of a sentence or a textual sequence. These nominal units (nouns or syntagms) can synthesize texts of different length or even refer to discontinuous fragments. Apart from performing this very basic function founded on the discursive economy of the journalistic genre, the nominal encapsulators allow the author to recategorize the content of the encapsulated segment through different evaluative modifiers and therefore to obtain either a negative or a positive perception of the message by the reader. Given an apparent lack of research on the subject on encapsulation devoted tomore than one language, our purpose is to carry out a contrastive analysis of the said phenomenon in Spanish and Polish in order to juxtapose the values and the frequency of usage of encapsulators with certain characteristics of both languages. Some formal as well as pragmatic and semantic features of nominal devices are thus analysed, namely their encapsulating mechanism, their degree of modification and some of their discursive functions.

Abstract:
The evolution of verbs expressing necessity in the history of English, such as *þurfan and need, has been studied in detail, especially their semantic competition and their grammaticalization (see Molencki 2002, 2005; Taeymans 2006; Loureiro-Porto 2009). However, analogous verbo-nominal expressions involving the morphologically related nouns þearf and need and the verbs be and have have received little attention, despite their relevance as semantic competitors of the verbs and their subsequent fossilization in high-frequency expressions such as if need be and had need. The current article fills this gap by studying the development of verbo-nominal expressions with þearf and need from Old to early Modern English, and asks: (i) whether the verbs and the verbo-nominal expressions undergo similar processes of grammaticalization, and (ii) whether there is any connection between the evolution of the verbal and the verbo-nominal sets. Analysis of these verbo-nominal constructions in a 4.1 million-word corpus (including the Helsinki Corpus and fragments of the Dictionary of Old English Corpus, the Corpus of Middle English Prose and Verse, the Lampeter Corpus and the Corpus of Early English Correspondence Sampler) shows that, firstly, both idiomaticization and grammaticalization are relevant in the development of verbo-nominal constructions; secondly, their evolution is key to the understanding of the development of the necessity verbs *þurfan and need; and finally, the competition between constructions with þearf and need calls into question the well-known hypothesis that phonological confusion with durran caused the disappearance of *þurfan in the ME period (see Visser 1963–73: 1423, §1343).

Abstract:
We investigated the phylogenetic relationship of the Critically Endangered bush frog Philautus sanctisilvaticus Das and Chanda, 1997 and other species distributed across the fragmented forests of Deccan Peninsula and the northern Eastern Ghats. A short fragment of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene was employed to assess phylogenetic relationships across Philautus sanctisilvaticus Das and Chanda, 1997, Raorchestes terebrans (Das and Chanda, 1998) and Philautus similipalensis Dutta, 2003. All sequenced specimens, including material from near the type localities of P. sanctisilvaticus (Amarkantak) and P. similipalensis (Simlipal) were genetically extremely similar, with pairwise uncorrected distances <1% in the 16S gene, and were phylogenetically placed within the genus Raorchestes. The results based on morphology are ambiguous and do not go hand in hand with molecular data, which however do not provide support for a three species hypothesis either. our findings advocate the need for making nomenclatural amendments. Philautus sanctisilvaticus Das and Chanda, 1997, is the first available nomen for this taxon, and we propose to include this species in Raorchestes as Raorchestes sanctisilvaticus (Das and Chanda, 1997), and to consider the nomina Philautus terebrans Das and Chanda, 1998 syn. nov. and Philautus similipalensis Dutta, 2003 syn. nov. as junior subjective synonyms for this nomen following the Principle of Priority in article 23.1 of the ICZN. The findings are notable from the point of conservation of the species and present a novel case with remarkable genetic homogeneity across the fragmented forests of Deccan Peninsula and Eastern Ghats.

Abstract:
We study the complexity of the combination of the Description Logics ALCQ and ALCQI with a terminological formalism based on cardinality restrictions on concepts. These combinations can naturally be embedded into C^2, the two variable fragment of predicate logic with counting quantifiers, which yields decidability in NExpTime. We show that this approach leads to an optimal solution for ALCQI, as ALCQI with cardinality restrictions has the same complexity as C^2 (NExpTime-complete). In contrast, we show that for ALCQ, the problem can be solved in ExpTime. This result is obtained by a reduction of reasoning with cardinality restrictions to reasoning with the (in general weaker) terminological formalism of general axioms for ALCQ extended with nominals. Using the same reduction, we show that, for the extension of ALCQI with nominals, reasoning with general axioms is a NExpTime-complete problem. Finally, we sharpen this result and show that pure concept satisfiability for ALCQI with nominals is NExpTime-complete. Without nominals, this problem is known to be PSpace-complete.

The Mississippian succession of Ayrshire, SW Scotland, is rich in fossil crinoids, albeit mainly preserved as fragments. Trearne Quarry is exceptional in yielding moderately common crinoid cups and thecae from certain horizons. To the two nominal taxa that have been documented hitherto, we add a further seven, all cladids with one exception. These species all come from the Blackhall Limestone of the Lower Limestone Formation (Visean, Mississippian). Nominal crinoid species identified from Trearne Quarry include Cladida: Rhabdocrinus scotocarbonarius (Wright), Ureocrinus bockschii (Geinitz), Ureocrinus globulus (de Koninck), Tyrieocrinus laxus Wright, Fifeocrinus tielensis (Wright), Hydreionocrinus formosus Wright, Parazeacrinites konincki (Bather) and Phanocrinus ardrossensis (Wright); and Diplobathrida, Camerata: Cribanocrinus baccatus (Wright). Species have distributions limited to one or a few mudrock beds. Identifiable crinoids are uncommon in massive, coral-rich reefal facies.

Abstract:
Abstract We demonstrated previously that injection of adult rabbits with homologous anti-VHa1 allotype antibody induces the appearance in serum of genetically unexpected (latent) a1 immunoglobulin (Ig) and a1-like internal images. We have now investigated the mechanism for this induction effect and have found that treatment of animals with polyclonal goat or monoclonal mouse anti-a1 antibody similarly results in production of unexpected a1 determinants. The N-terminal amino acid sequences of deblocked heavy chains showed that latent a1 Ig induced by monoclonal antibody treatment was identical to nominal a1 Ig at 18 of 19 residues, with the one amino acid difference at position 13 probably due to a single nucleotide change. Like nominal a1, these molecules expressed multiple VHa1 framework epitopes, as demonstrated by direct immunoelectron microscopic visualization of immune complexes. Whereas F(ab)'2 fragments of rabbit anti-a1 antibody retained inducing activity, F(ab) fragments were effective only when administered in an aggregated form; this result suggests that cross-linking of surface Ig receptors plays a critical role in the induction process. We conclude that all rabbits contain dormant B cells expressing germ-line-encoded latent allotypes, and that in vivo administration of anti-Ig antibody causes activation of these cells directly rather than through perturbation of an allotype regulatory network.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to present a fragment of Wykład nabożny piosnki „Salve Regina” (A pious interpretation of the song “Salve Regina”), a ca. mid-16th-century manuscript by Jerzy Argiglobyn, in the context of the Reformation by means of a lexical and semantic analysis of the sequative names (Lat. nomina sequativa) and proper names occurring there. The selection of the fragment was determined by the fact that, on the one hand, it is the essence of the discussed manuscript as a polemic work, which arises from the accumulation of references to the Reformation, and on the other hand, this fragment is the most problematic one when it comes to a lexical and semantic analysis. The author of the manuscript, when referring to the Reformation, enumerates the names of the theologians associated with it and mentions the places important to the new faith and the followers of the proliferating Reformation denominations. He provides each piece of such information in a manner presenting it in a negative, at times even insulting, light.

Abstract:
The article deals with the fixed verb combinations of the German language from the point of view of cognitive linguistics. As the material under study, fixed verb combinations are presented, built according to the type “verb + (preposition) + noun”. The author dwells on four German verbs (stehen, stellen, schließen, fassen) and possible combinations with them. The examples under consideration are combined into groups where different nouns are used with one verb, usually of an abstract nature. An attempt is made to analyze conceptual schemes that model fragments of the surrounding reality and to identify the images that the carrier of the German linguistic culture operates with. The study of the figurative component of fixed verb combinations allows us to classify them on conceptual grounds, namely to single out the metaphor “container” and the spatial metaphor. The author also dwells on the conceptual metaphor of objectification. Particular attention is paid not only to the semantics of individual components of verbal phrases (verb, preposition and noun), but also to the grammatical characteristics of lexemes. The analysis performed makes it possible to speak about the presence in the German linguistic culture of basic universal concepts, designed in the form of conceptual schemes. The studied conceptual schemes make it possible to clearly demonstrate the thesis that abstract phenomena are often comprehended through concrete-sensory images.
