Abstract:
This article highlights that the adage, a picture is worth a thousand words, is a flawed understatement. Our memories, knowledge, and opinions rely heavily on pictures. Words can only provide an explanation to information contained in a good picture. Time always moves forward, but a picture allows us to look back to some prior moment in time. Photography, which means writing with light, would require replacing the artist’s paper with a chemically coated screen, exposing the screen to the image, and then stabilizing the resulting picture. The first practical photographic process was announced in France in 1839 by Louis Daguerre, who had achieved fame as a designer of theater stages and lighting effects. George Eastman built a magnificent Colonial Revival Mansion on East Avenue in Rochester in 1905. It is a National Historic Landmark and is chartered by the State of New York as the International Museum of Photography and Film. It displays a rare collection of photographs, cameras, projectors, books, and motion pictures.

Abstract:
This study aimed at finding out the use of figurative language in an artwork, specifically movie called Toy Story 3. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative which provided the necessary data analysis to gain the information needed from the movie. The data soure was movie entitled Toy Story 3 with xxxx minutes in length. In collecting data, the researcher used document analysis; later in daa analysis, the interactive analysis consisting of data reduction, data display, and dat verification was employed. Te result shows that there are three types of figurative language consisted in the movie: Metaphor, Simile, and Hyperbole. The metaphors were used to describe something by comparing it with other objects, Hyperbole ws employed iin order to make the language used in the film increase a child's imagination to infinity, and Simile usage enhances the sentences to spark the curiosity of the audience—merely children. Then, it was aso found that regarding the frequency, Metaphor occurs nine times and represents 60%, Hyperbole occurs five times and represents 33%, and Simile occurs one time and represents 7%. Iin conclusion, The movie Toy Story 3 used only a few figurative speeches because the target audience is children, hence simple forms of language uses are utilized.

Abstract:
Motion lines (MLs) are a pictorial technique used to represent object movement in a still picture. This study explored how MLs contribute to motion perception. In Experiment 1, we reported the creation of a motion illusion caused by MLs: random displacements of objects with MLs on each frame were perceived as unidirectional global motion along the pictorial motion direction implied by MLs. In Experiment 2, we showed that the illusory global motion in the peripheral visual field captured the perceived motion direction of random displacement of objects without MLs in the central visual field, and confirmed that the results in Experiment 1 did not stem simply from response bias, but resulted from perceptual processing. In Experiment 3, we showed that the spatial arrangement of orientation information rather than ML length is important for the illusory global motion. Our results indicate that the ML effect is based on perceptual processing rather than response bias, and that comparison of neighboring orientation components may underlie the determination of pictorial motion direction with MLs.

Abstract:
The article deals with Russian prefixed verbs of motion in the reflection of the Turkish language. The topic is relevant due to the fact that in recent years the role of Russian language learning in Turkey is increasing because of the expansion of economic and cultural relations between the two countries. The aim of the study is to create a linguodidactic basis for developing methodological recommendations for teaching Russian prefixed verbs of motion to Turkish students. Different methods have been used to realize the goal. The article is based on the dissertations, textbooks and manuals on the Russian language for foreigners, scientific works comparing the Russian and Turkish languages. The study of verbs of motion in the practical course of the Russian language for Turkish students has a special place. Russian and Turkish language speakers perceive the world and their identity differently. The differences between the pictures of the world are reflected in culture and language, its vocabulary and grammatical categories. Thus, while there are universals in the verb systems of the Russian and Turkish languages, there are also significant differences in the idea of action, state, change, movement, denoted by verb units in the two languages. Russian prefixed verbs of motion do not have exact equivalents in Turkish and are translated by means of verbs with different root or translation transformations. The results of the comparative description of Russian prefixed verbs of motion and transferring their meanings in Turkish, and the identified differences served as the basis for developing methodological recommendations for teaching Russian prefixed verbs of motion to Turkish students, taking into account their native language. Basing on the research, a system of teaching prefixed verbs of motion to Turkish students, including methods of verb presentation and consolidation in oral and written speech, was developed. The prospects of this work are to create a nationally-oriented textbook on the topic Russian prefix verbs of motion.

Abstract:
As the inkjet printers have two axes of movement, (one for scrolling of the paper and one for travelling of the cartridges) inkjets have closed loop stepper motor control cards for two axes which can be used in CNC routers. There are few studies in literature and internet about this method. The main difficulty while using these cards as motion control card is to send the motion data of the cutting process to the CNCs motor drivers. As programming ability is needed, this is the point where the projects are mostly left unfinished. In this study, a new method to help use of printer motherboards as CNC router motion control cards, with no need of programming skills and buying expensive software, is given. In this method, the third dimension of the picture is represented by colors. After drawing the two dimensional top view of the workpiece with any simple graphics painting software which can be found in every computer like Paint, is painted with the colors black to white, from the lowest level to highest respectively, like in the geographical maps which the oceans are painted darker to lighter according to the depth. As it is known that there are 16.7 millions of colors between black and white, the system is impressively precise in Z axis. The analogue signals of the colors which are sent from printers motherboard to the cartridges are captured with a PIC based circuit, which is designed for this project. Then the color codes are converted to Z axiss position data and PWM signals that are needed in Z axis motion. The X and Y axes stepper motor control PWM signals are generated by printer motherboard and used in the system just as is. While doing the cutting process on a printer motherboard attached CNC, the computer assumes as if a picture is being printed with the printer that is connected to USB or parallel port. This method is candidate to be one of the most common used home based or laboratory based CNC control methods in the near future.

Abstract:
The extremely short life cycle and the rapid decay in revenues after opening coupled with the rapid and frequent introduction of new competitive products makes the timing of new product introductions in the motion picture industry critical, particularly during the high-revenue Christmas and summer seasons. Each studio wants to capture as much of the season as possible by opening early in the season. At the same time, each wants to avoid head-to-head competition. The authors model competition between two motion pictures in a share attraction framework and conduct an equilibrium analysis of the product introduction timing game in a finite season. The following three different equilibrium configurations emerge: (1) a single equilibrium with both movies opening simultaneously at the beginning of the season, (2) a single equilibrium with one movie opening at the beginning of the season and one delaying, and (3) dual equilibria, with either movie delaying opening. A key factor is the product life cycle, which can be captured well with a two-parameter exponential decline. The authors relate the life-cycle parameters to these possibilities with the general result that the weaker movie may be forced to delay opening. These results are related to case studies of the opening of recently released movies. A statistical analysis of the 1990 summer season in North America provides support for the conclusions and suggests that current release timing decisions can be improved. The authors discuss the rationale of “avoiding the competition” in the general context of product introduction timing.

Abstract:
Twenty-one female steel industry traverse crane operators with long-term sick-leave (3 (1-8) years) due to chronic neck disability underwent careful analysis of case history, physical status and electrogoniometric three-dimensional recordings of active neck motion. Results were compared with those from working female crane operators having identical work posture and tasks and, further, with a group of working female clerks. The sick-listed crane operators had previous frequent contacts with the primary health care because of complaints from the neck and back. In comparison with the reference groups, the sick-listed crane operators showed tenderness of the trapezius and levator scapulae muscles and a short neck stature in combination with impaired active neck motion range with reduced motion speed. The motion pattern was however unchanged. The findings are consistent with the clinical picture of chronic neck myalgia that persisted despite long-term absence from the previous exposure to high static work load upon the neck-shoulders.

Full text
Abstract:
To better understand the Ouchi illusion in which a stationary picture generates illusory relative motion, the spatial properties of the constituent elements of the rectangular checkerboard background were examined. Results of experiment 1 revealed that the largest illusion was obtained with elements of approximately 20–30 min in width and 4–6 min in height, an orientation of the constituents that was orthogonal to that of the test grating, and a phase shift of the alternate stripes that was close to 180°. In experiment 2 it was found that the illusion increased in magnitude with increasing achromatic contrast but was minimal with a pattern of high chromatic contrast near isoluminance. In experiment 3, two test patches were presented simultaneously in the checkerboard background and were varied independently in their orientation to explore whether or not their motions were perceived as coherent (common fate). Patches having identical orientations, and nearly orthogonal to the surround, were synchronized more strongly than those having reflected orientations. Hysteresis related to the gain control of spatially overlapping visual units differing in their polarity (ON/OFF) was discussed as a possible cause of this phenomenon.

Abstract:
AbstractWe use topographically corrected interferograms, repeated global positioning system observations of locations of stakes and time series of elevation data to produce time series of high-resolution three-dimensional (3-D) ice surface motion maps for the infilling of the ice depression created by the 1996 subglacial eruption at the Gjálp volcano in Vatnajökull, Iceland. The ice inflow generated uplift in the central parts of the depression. During the first months, the uplift was much reduced by basal melting as the subglacial volcano cooled. For those motions surface-parallel ice flow cannot be assumed. The 3-D motion maps are created by an optimization process that combines the complementary datasets. The optimization is based on a Markov random-field regularization and a simulated annealing algorithm. The 3-D motion maps show the pattern of gradually diminishing ice flow into the depression. They provide a consistent picture of the 3-D motion field, both spatially and with time, which cannot be seen by separate interpretation of the complementary observations. The 3-D motion maps were used to calculate the cooling rate of the subglacial volcano for the first year after the eruption. First an uplift rate resulting solely from the inflow of ice was calculated from inferred horizontal motions. Basal melting was then estimated as the difference between the calculated uplift generated by the inflow of ice, and the observed uplift that was the combined result of ice inflow and basal melting. The basal melting was found to decline from 55 m3 s–1 (due to power of 18 GW) in January 1997 to 5 m3 s–1 (2GW) in October 1997.

Abstract:
The effect of attention on the adaptation effects produced by stimuli rotating in the picture plane was examined in five experiments. In experiment 1, subjects performed a task either on a rotating adapting stimulus or on an irrelevant distractor stimulus. Adaptation of a subsequent ambiguous test stimulus was greater when the adapting stimulus was attended than when the irrelevant stimulus was attended. In experiments 2, 3, and 5, two adapting stimuli were presented, rotating in opposite directions, and subjects attended to one or the other. The direction of rotation of the ambiguous test stimulus depended on which adapting stimulus was attended. In experiment 4, the influence of eye movements in producing adaptation in ambiguous motion displays was determined by contrasting the effects of adaptation produced by dual adaptation stimuli rotating in the same or opposite direction. Adaptation effects were not predicted by eye movement hypotheses.

Abstract:
Abstract Magnetars, isolated neutron stars with magnetic-field strengths typically ≳1014 G, exhibit distinctive months-long outburst epochs during which strong evolution of soft X-ray pulse profiles, along with nonthermal magnetospheric emission components, is often observed. Using near-daily NICER observations of the magnetar SGR 1830-0645 during the first 37 days of a recent outburst decay, a pulse peak migration in phase is clearly observed, transforming the pulse shape from an initially triple-peaked to a single-peaked profile. Such peak merging has not been seen before for a magnetar. Our high-resolution phase-resolved spectroscopic analysis reveals no significant evolution of temperature despite the complex initial pulse shape, yet the inferred surface hot spots shrink during peak migration and outburst decay. We suggest two possible origins for this evolution. For internal heating of the surface, tectonic motion of the crust may be its underlying cause. The inferred speed of this crustal motion is ≲100 m day−1, constraining the density of the driving region to ρ ∼ 1010 g cm−3, at a depth of ∼200 m. Alternatively, the hot spots could be heated by particle bombardment from a twisted magnetosphere possessing flux tubes or ropes, somewhat resembling solar coronal loops, that untwist and dissipate on the 30–40 day timescale. The peak migration may then be due to a combination of field-line footpoint motion (necessarily driven by crustal motion) and evolving surface radiation beaming. This novel data set paints a vivid picture of the dynamics associated with magnetar outbursts, yet it also highlights the need for a more generic theoretical picture where magnetosphere and crust are considered in tandem.

Abstract:
In this paper, period-3 motions to chaos in the periodically forced, softening Duffing oscillator are investigated analytically. The analytical solutions for period-3 and period-6 motions are approximated through the generalized harmonic balance method. The bifurcation trees of period-3 motions to chaos are presented analytically. The symmetric and asymmetric period-3 motions are found. The symmetric to asymmetric period-3 motions experience the saddle-node bifurcation. From the Hopf bifurcation of the asymmetric period-3 motion, period-6 motions are determined analytically from the bifurcation tree of period-3 motions. Such an investigation provides a complete picture of period-3 motions to period-6 motions. With such bifurcation tree, the chaotic motions relative to period-3 motions in such a softening Duffing oscillator can be determined analytically. In a similar fashion, other bifurcation trees of period-m motions to chaos can be determined analytically.

Abstract:
Category: Ankle, Ankle Arthritis Introduction/Purpose: Reports of ankle range of motion and how it affects patient outcomes following total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) have been mixed. Furthermore, recent studies have relied on clinical exam to obtain postoperative range of motion and have lacked preoperative functional scores. The purpose of our study was to analyze how preoperative range of motion and functional scores change with time following TAA using postoperative functional scores and radiographs for range of motion calculations. Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed on 107 patients (109 ankles) that had undergone fixed-bearing implant TAA by a single surgeon between 2010 and 2015. Preoperative range of motion was gathered clinically in office by the senior author. Postoperative range of motion through the ankle joint was evaluated with dedicated weight-bearing maximum dorsiflexion and plantarflexion lateral radiographs at 3 and 6 months, 1 and 2 years. The range of motion was measured using the angle measurement tool on the picture archiving and communication system. Patients completed visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain and the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM) questionnaire subcategorized into activities of daily (ADL) and sports subscale preoperatively and at postoperative intervals of 3 and 6 months, 1 and 2 years. The mean age was 65 years (range, 31-83 years). Mean BMI was 28.1 (range, 14.9-44.9). There were 53 males (50%). Results: The mean total arc of ankle motion preoperatively was 20.7 degrees and improved significantly to 28.3, 34.3, 33.3, and 33.3 degrees at 3 and 6 months, 1 and 2 years, respectively (P<0.001) (Figure 1). Mean VAS pain and mean FAAM ADL preoperative scores improved significantly at each postoperative time point as seen in Figure 1 (P<0.001). Increased ankle range of motion was correlated with lower VAS preoperatively (r=-0.38, P=0.007), and at 1 year (r=-0.36, P<0.001), and 2 years (r=-0.2, P=0.033) postoperatively. Increased ankle range of motion was significantly correlated with higher FAAM-ADL at 3 months (r=0.48, P=0.012), 1 year (r=0.24, P<0.034), and 2 years (r=0.37, P<0.001) postoperatively. Conclusion: Patients undergoing fixed-bearing TAA had continued and sustained improvement from preoperative total arc of motion, pain, and function at each postoperative visit, up to 2 years. Ankle range of motion was noted to peak at 6 months, while pain and FAAM-ADL continued to improve up to 2 years postoperatively. Patients with greater ankle range of motion correlated with less pain and improved function at 1 and 2 years postoperatively. Though pain and function may continue to improve even as far out as 2 years postoperatively, it is not likely that range of motion will continue to increase.

Abstract:
It is shown that throughout all geo-technological periods of the existence of coal mines, there is a negative impact of waste dumps on the atmosphere, water resources and soil. Theoretical propositions have been formulated, in accordance with which the migration of liquid pollutants into the soil laver and underlving rocks in the zone of action of the waste dump is described by a one-dimensional equation of convective diffusion, taking into account the kinetics of sorption of pollutants. It is recommended to model the air movement when flowing around the waste dumps by the O. Reynolds system of equations for the turbulent motion of a viscous fluid, using the finite volume methodfor the numerical solution. The numerical solution of the equations of motion of O. Reynolds makes it possible to visualize the picture of air flow in special zones and predict the dust and gas transport in the surface layer of the atmosphere. It is expedient to simulate the dust and gas transfer by the equation of convective-turbulent diffusion, setting the convective transfer rate according to the results of calculating the velocity fieldformed when flowing around the dump.

<p><strong>Imagery plays an important role in literary works, and poetry is no exception. In Goethe's poetry, the romantic era which tries to describe the beauty of nature as the main object is very strong. One of the natural beauties that are trying to be described and famous is autumn in Germany. This natural phenomenon is trying to be described through imagery, so readers need to understand the imagery in poetry to get a clear picture and understand the intent or message in the poem. This study aims to describe the meaning related to imagery and the types of imagery contained in Goethe's poems. The research method used is qualitative with the theory of Pradopo. The results showed that in the process of understanding the images or images contained in poetry, an understanding of the meaning contained in the poem as a whole was needed to get a clear picture. Meanwhile, based on the results of the analysis, found 4 types of imagery in Goethe's autumn-themed poetry, namely visual imagery, auditory imagery, tactile imagery, and motion imagery. The number of each image is 8 visual images, 2 auditory images, 2 tactile images, and 3 motion images.</strong></p><p><strong><strong><em>Keywords</em></strong>–</strong><em>Goethe, Imagery, Poetry</em><em>, Herbsgedichte</em></p>

Abstract:
The Hipparcos parallaxes and proper motions together provide a consistent picture of the Hyades distance, structure and dynamics. They yield a cluster convergent point motion consistent with the individual trigonometric parallaxes, and together explain the large distance modulus derived from the most recent ground-based proper motion investigations as originating from differences in the space velocity and small systematic effects in the ground-based proper motions. Conversely, the smaller distance modulus generally derived from a variety of ground-based trigonometric parallax programmes originates from systematically larger values of the ground-based parallaxes. Although recent distance determinations to individual objects in the cluster, most notably the results of Torres et al. (1997a, b, c), are in excellent agreement with the Hipparcos trigonometric parallaxes, extrapolation to a mean cluster distance is again affected by systematic effects in the ground-based proper motion studies. The combination of the Hipparcos astrometry with radial velocity measurements from ground-based programmes provides three-dimensional velocities allowing candidate membership selection to be based on 3-dimensional positional and kinematical criteria. A number of new cluster members have been found within 20 pc of the cluster centre. No evidence for systematic internal velocity structure is found; rather, the results are fully consistent with auniform cluster space motion with an internal velocity dispersion of about 0.3 km s-1. Spatial distribution, mass segregation, and binary distributions are consistent with N-body simulations.

Abstract:
We report three experiments using a new form of direct subjective presence evaluation that was developed from the method of continuous assessment used to assess television picture quality. Observers were required to provide a continuous rating of their sense of presence using a handheld slider. The first experiment investigated the effects of manipulating stereoscopic and motion parallax cues within video sequences presented on a 20 in. stereoscopic CRT display. The results showed that the presentation of both stereoscopic and motion parallax cues was associated with higher presence ratings. One possible interpretation of Experiment 1 is that CRT displays that contain the spatial cues of stereoscopic disparity and motion parallax are more interesting or engaging. To test this, observers in Experiment 2 rated the same stimuli first for interest and then for presence. The results showed that variations in interest did not predict the presence ratings obtained in Experiment 1. However, the subsequent ratings of presence differed significantly from those obtained in Experiment 1, suggesting that prior experience with interest ratings affected subsequent judgments of presence. To test this, Experiment 3 investigated the effects of prior experience on presence ratings. Three groups of observers rated a training sequence for interest, presence, and 3-Dness before rating the same stimuli as used for Experiments 1 and 2 for presence. The results demonstrated that prior ratings sensitize observers to different features of a display resulting in different presence ratings. The implications of these results for presence evaluation are discussed, and a combination of more-refined subjective measures and a battery of objective measures is recommended.

Abstract:
The use of synchrotron radiation and large area detectors has increased the quality and quantity of X-ray and neutron diffraction data within the last decades. These advances call for new and better approaches to model and to interpret the data. Elastic X-ray diffraction corresponds to the Fourier transform of the thermally averaged electron density in the unit cell. This density is normally approximated as the convolution of a sum of static atomic densities and the thermal motion of the individual atoms. The static densities and thermal motion are equally important: Together they conform the entire model refined against a single set of measured data, and they must both be modeled correctly, or neither is. The advent of high-performance computers has made it feasible to obtain lattice-dynamical models based on periodic quantum-mechanical calculations, to describe the concerted motion of atoms and molecules through the crystal. Our recent calculations of Debye-Waller factors based on periodic ab-initio calculations for various molecular test systems [1] has prepared the ground for proposing the refinement of quantum-mechanically derived normal modes of vibration against diffraction experiments. As opposed to the standard approach using independent atomic motion, some of the advantages and possibilities that emerge are: 1. A physically reasonable picture of the molecular motion in the crystal. 2. Refinement against data obtained at multiple temperatures in a common model. 3. Modeling thermal diffuse scattering. 4. Reduction of the number of model parameters. 5. Anisotropic motion of H atoms. The approach is computationally expensive, but may prove useful for electron density studies, studies of thermal effects in crystals, i.e. studies of thermochromic and thermoelectric compounds, solid-state phase-transitions and to derive thermodynamic properties, e.g. free energies of polymorphic crystals. We will introduce the method and present some first results for model systems.

Abstract:
AbstractIn the fresh reading proposed here of the still not satisfactorily interpreted passages in Metaphysics Ε2-3, Aristotle emerges as making a case against determinism based on a robust notion of the accident. Accidental beings are uncaused causes and have their rightful place in Aristotle's ontology. The resulting physical indeterminism is here used as a litmus test for the exegetical practice of the great Commentator, Averroes, whose self-proclaimed, and later proverbial, loyalty to Aristotle's text will be shown to give way to idiosyncratic interpretations at times. His explanations of Metaphysics Ε2-3 are sparse and no less obscure than Aristotle's text. It is only when read together with his commentaries on the Physics, to which he explicitly refers twice in his Long commentary on Metaphysics Ε2-3, that a surprising picture emerges. Averroes recycles the notion of the accident, now reconceptualised in cosmological terms, and – putting it to the opposite use of Aristotle's – weaves it into an original theory of motion that integrates both supra- and sublunar realms into a deterministic framework of uninterrupted causal chains, thus safeguarding the principle of Divine providence.

The letters SMPTE stands for the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. However, SMPTE is used in radiology, not only in TVs. SMPTE is used as a quality control (QC) test for monitor display to tests its performance for The American College of Radiology (ACR) accreditation process. It is a standard test for screen QC program in hospitals which mean it must be done by specialized personnel, not like quality assurance (QA) where anyone can do it and be proactive. This paper will focus on image quality of monitors in radiology departments by testing those monitors by using the SMPTE pattern.

ABSTRACT The orbits of the least chemically enriched stars open a window on the formation of our Galaxy when it was still in its infancy. The common picture is that these low-metallicity stars are distributed as an isotropic, pressure-supported component since these stars were either accreted from the early building blocks of the assembling Milky Way (MW), or were later brought by the accretion of faint dwarf galaxies. Combining the metallicities and radial velocities from the Pristine and LAMOST surveys and Gaia DR2 parallaxes and proper motions for an unprecedented large and unbiased sample of 1027 very metal poor stars at [Fe/H] ≤ −2.5 dex, we show that this picture is incomplete. We find that $31{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ of the stars that currently reside spatially in the disc ($|Z| \le 3{\rm \, kpc}$) do not venture outside of the disc plane throughout their orbit. Moreover, this sample shows strong statistical evidence (at the 5.0σ level) of asymmetry in their kinematics, favouring prograde motion. The discovery of this population implies that a significant fraction of stars with iron abundances [Fe/H] ≤ −2.5 dex merged into, formed within, or formed concurrently with the MW disc and that the history of the disc was quiet enough to allow them to retain their disc-like orbital properties, challenging theoretical and cosmological models.

Abstract:
The motion equations for a system of two bodies moving in a medium are derived in the Cartesian coordinate system in the Newtonian theory. The coordinate system is barycentric, that is, the center of mass of the two-body system is immobile. Using the Einstein – Infeld approximation procedure, the gravitational field created by the “two bodies – medium” system was found from the Einstein field equations, and then the equations of motion of the bodies in this field were obtained. It is shown that in the post-Newtonian approximation of the general theory of relativity, the center of mass of two bodies moving in a gas – dust rarefied medium of constant density, determined by analogy with the Newtonian center of mass, is displaced along the cycloid, although in the Newtonian approximation it is stationary, i.e. the movement along the cycloid occurs with respect to the barycentric Newtonian fixed reference frame. Numerical estimates are given for the magnitude of this displacement. Given a popular value of the medium density ρ = 10–21 g·cm–3 its order can reach 106 km per one rotation of two bodies around their center of mass. In the case of the equality of masses of the bodies, their relativistic center of mass, like their Newtonian center of mass, is immobile. It has been hypothesized that for any elliptical orbits of two bodies and an inhomogeneous distribution of the gas – dust medium the qualitative picture of motion of the relativistic center of mass of the two bodies will not change.

The trade-network of Afro-Eurasia changed radically in the 9th–10th centuries, instead of the former east-west routes the south-north came to the fore. The Volga-Kama region became the most important port of trade between the Islamic world and Eastern Europe in the beginning of the 10th century which set in motion the formation of the Volga Bulghar state and the conversion to Islam. The Volga Bulghars are mentioned in the Muslim sources as the center of trade. Ibn Faḍlān, al-Masʿūdī give a detailed picture of this intensive trade. The Muslim dirhams came from Samanid mints to the Volga region and the Volga Bulghar merchants bought northern merchandise (furs, slaves, wax, honey etc.) in the 10th century. Al-Muqaddasī gives an exhaustive list of trade goods from the Volga Bulgar area at the end of the 10th century. After the disappearance of the silver dirhams in the first decades of the 11th century the state of the Volga Bulghars remained a significant trade center. The Muslim maps of Ibn Ḥawqal, Maḥmūd al-Kāshġarī and al-Idrīsī reflect a river system called Etil which is waterway commercial network. It connects Central Asia via Siberia with the Volga-Kama region, the northern regions can be reached on the way along the Kama and perhaps the Vyatka, the northeastern network includes the Oka, Unzha and upper Volga. The southern routes represent the lower Volga from the territory of Volga Bulghars to the Caspian Sea and the Volga-Don portage plus the lower Don until its estuary to the Azov Sea.

Abstract:
William Randolph Hearst became editor and proprietor of the San Francisco Examiner in 1887, and by 1935, he had assembled a media empire consisting of nearly 30 major newspapers, 13 magazines, 8 radio stations, 3 news wires, and 2 motion picture companies. Most scholarship about Hearst has focused on his newspapers; less studied have been the magazines he acquired early in the 20th century. This monograph examines immigrant representations in Hearst magazines published between 1905 and 1945, focusing on how magazine fiction, nonfiction, and “fact-fiction” articles presented immigrants and immigration as social and political issues. Like Hearst himself, the publications favored immigrants from Germany and the Scandinavian countries of northern Europe and tended to disfavor those from China and Japan and, to a lesser extent, Mexico. According to the magazines, immigrants from the Far East and Mexico were “undesirables” who threatened society by, allegedly, importing, selling, and using hazardous drugs. Newspaper advertisements, news articles, and editorials extended these portrayals to wider audiences. Hearst also applied cross-media promotion to motion pictures, with writers converting fiction from his magazines into screenplays for Cosmopolitan Productions and MGM. The monograph contains examples of how magazine content and iconic covers have informed contemporary films and television series. In recent years, stylized representations have glamorized lifestyles but have also perpetuated cultural stereotypes that may contribute to anti-immigrant attitudes.

Abstract:
Filament S242 is 25 pc long with massive clumps and YSO clusters concentrated in its end regions; it is considered a good example of edge collapse. We mapped this filament in the 12CO(1–0) and 13CO(1–0) lines. A large-scale velocity gradient along filament S242 has been detected; the relative velocity between the two end-clumps is ~3 km s−1, indicating an approaching motion between them. These signatures are consistent with the filament S242 being formed through the collapse of a single elongated entity, where an effect known as “gravitational focusing” drives the ends of the filament to collapse (edge collapse). Based on this picture, we estimate a collapse timescale of ~4.2 Myr, which is the time needed for a finite and elongated entity evolving to the observed filament S242. For the whole filament, we find that increases in surface densities lead to increases in velocity dispersion, which can be consistently explained as the result of self-gravity. We also calculated the contribution of longitudinal collapse to the observed velocity dispersion and found it to be the dominant effect in driving the gas motion near the end-clumps. We propose that our filament S242 is formed through a two-stage collapse model, where the edge collapse of a truncated filament is followed by a stage of longitudinal accretion toward the dense end-clumps.

Is the involvement of stars critical to the success of motion pictures? Film studios, which regularly pay multimillion-dollar fees to stars, seem to be driven by that belief. This article sheds light on the returns on this investment using an event study that considers the impact of more than 1200 casting announcements on trading behavior in a simulated and real stock market setting. The author finds evidence that the involvement of stars affects movies' expected theatrical revenues and provides insight into the magnitude of this effect. For example, the estimates suggest that, on average, stars are worth approximately $3 million in theatrical revenues. In a cross-sectional analysis grounded in the literature on group dynamics, the author also examines the determinants of the magnitude of stars' impact on expected revenues. Among other things, the author shows that the stronger a cast already is, the greater is the impact of a newly recruited star with a track record of box office successes or with a strong artistic reputation. Finally, in an extension to the study, the author does not find that the involvement of stars in movies increases the valuation of film companies that release the movies, thus providing insufficient grounds to conclude that stars add more value than they capture. The author discusses implications for managers in the motion picture industry.

Language Skill consists of four components of speaking, writing, listening and reading. The most important thing for children is speaking, because it provides enormous benefits, one of which so that children can interact with peers and others around them and add new knowledge. Storytelling is a popular communication medium for children, training their ability to focus attention for some time on certain objects. Children are able to express themselves through a process that makes them happy and fosters a sense of satisfaction that makes them more confident. Tale or story telling is something human, that is, fairy tale or story using eye, hearing, motion, and touching heart. The benefits of storytelling activities are: 1.) Storytelling can develop children's imagination, 2.) Increasing experience, 3.) Train concentration power, 4.) Increasing the vocabulary, 5.) Creating a familiar atmosphere, 6.) comprehending, 7.) Abstract:
Virtually every product is seasonal; seasonality often dictates business strategy. In this article, the authors (1) show how to add known seasonal patterns to any dynamic model parsimoniously and without changing the fundamental model assumptions, (2) illustrate how their method provides strategic implications for timing new product introductions, and (3) provide an empirical application. The authors transform time so that, during high seasons, time is moving faster than normal time. Traditional methods only adjust sales, independent of the underlying sales model. The authors’ method also changes the product's growth along its life cycle and suggests that timing introduction decisions are dependent on the shape of the product's life cycle. The authors’ empirical work compares their theoretical results with empirical observations. With data for all major films released between July 1993 and 1995 (673 films), the authors estimate the seasonal pattern for the motion picture industry and compare their theory with studio behavior.

Abstract:
The negative effects of violent content in movies have recently been a hot topic among both researchers and the general public. Despite growing concern, violence in movies has persisted over time. Few studies have examined why this pattern continues. To fill this gap in the literature, we examine how Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) movie rating descriptors predict ticket sales of 2,094 movies from 1992 to 2012. We test the validity of three theoretical models: (1) the reflective model, (2) the reactance model, and (3) the market model. We find that violent content is linked neither to violence in the broader U.S. culture (i.e., the reflective model) nor to a psychological reactance by adolescents (i.e., the reactance model). Rather, we find, especially among PG-13 (parents strongly cautioned) movies, that violent content leads to increased ticket sales, suggesting that market demand (i.e., audience preferences) is responsible for continued violent content. We discuss the implications of our findings.

Abstract:
The scheme of theoretical analysis of the influence of rotational motion on the working process of the near-bit jet pump is chosen, the methods of its realization and limits of use are determined. On the basis of the potential flows theory with the application of elementary hydrodynamic functions of a complex variable, basics for the development of analytical models of the near-bit ejector pump operation for conditions of its rotation in a well have been worked out. Components of a mixed flow are modeled as functions of the vortex flow and parallel jet flow. Application of certain hydrodynamic functions of a complex variable has allowed to combine partial outcomes of differential equations of elementary streams motions and to determine the structure of the mixed flow function. The equation of the mixed flow motion is given in the form of a complex potential, components of which are equal to Laplace’s equation and Cauchy-Riemann Conditions, and determine the kinematics of irrotational flow. Possibility of application of the complex variable functions’ theory for velocities profiles modeling and determination of limits for dissociation of mixed flows by rotation of the near-bit jet pump in a well has been shown. The list of hydro-dynamic parameters, which should be taken into consideration by modeling of the ejector system working process, has been determined, and the structure of initial equations, that characterize kinematic picture of velocities field in the chamber of the ejector pump mixing has been established. Limit conditions for determination of a complex potential of mixed flows and application limits of the proposed method of circulation flows modeling have been stated. The class of hydrodynamic problems has been established, to which one may relate the problem of finding the complex potential of mixed flows in a chamber for mixing of an ejector pump by its rotation in a well.

Abstract:
This report is a continuation of three earlier reviews (Marsden 1996a, 1996b, 1998) that included a summary of our orbital knowledge of the Kuiper Belt. Presented at conferences held in the middle of 1994, 1995 and 1996, respectively, these reviews showed the steadily developing picture of a system dominated by the platinos, librating in the 2:3 mean-motion resonance with Neptune, and the cubewanos, a somewhat more distant population of nonlibrating objects with low orbital eccentricities. The existence of a 3:4 Neptune librator and a 3:5 Neptune librator was also suspected. These librators have now been confirmed, and a possible 4:7 librator and possible second 3:5 librator have also been found. The known and suspected multiple-opposition librators are listed in Table 1. Here it is important to note that the orbital semimajor axes a (in AU), eccentricities e and inclinations i (in degrees with respect to the 2000.0 ecliptic) are mean values that eliminate the large 12-year and 30-year periodicities arising from the indirect perturbations by Jupiter and Satum on sun-centered orbits. The numbers in parentheses are the semimajor axes (in AU) corresponding to the resonances. Following the absolute magnitude H, the entries “Nep.” and “Ura.” show the minimum distances (in AU) from Neptune and Uranus (the latter being of course quite small for the most eccentric 2:3 Neptune librators) within several millennia of the present time.

Abstract:
In this paper, on the basis of an analysis of the successive satellite optical images (MODISAqua, TIRS Landsat-8, AVHRR NOAA-18) and radar images (SAR-C Sentinel-1A, SAR-C Radarsat-2) on June 8–11, 2015, the effect of the mesoscale vortex movement (anticyclone with diameter of 35 km and associated cyclone) on the transport of oil spots in the northern part of the Gdansk Bay was demonstrated for the first time. The velocities of this transport are estimated; the observed picture of the movement of the spots is compared with their transfer according to the Seatrack Web model. The largest (about 20 cm/s) drift velocity corresponded to the spot that appeared near the periphery of the anticyclonic vortex (the region of maximum velocities), the smallest one was at the spot near the center of the vortex. At a wind speed of not more than 5 m/s on June 10 and an assumed orbital velocity of the anticyclone of the order of 20 cm/s, the contribution of the vortex motion to the total transport of the spots under the influence of wind and vortex should be decisive. The observed drift of the spots did not correspond to the forecast of their movement by the Seatrack Web numerical model, which did not take into account the vortex dynamics of the waters.

Abstract:
The influence of a background vortex flow on the clustering of floating tracers is addressed. The vortex flow considered is induced by an ellipsoidal vortex evolving in a deformation. The system exhibits various vortex motion regimes: (1) a steady state, (2) oscillation and (3) rotation of the ellipsoidal vortex core. The latter two induce an unsteady velocity field for the tracer, thus leading to irregular (chaotic) tracer motion. Superimposing a stochastic divergent velocity field onto the deterministic vortex flow allows us to observe significantly different tracer evolution. An ellipsoidal vortex has ellipsoidal symmetry, and the tracer’s trajectories exhibit the same symmetry inside the vortex. Outside the vortex, the external deformation flow symmetry dominates. Diffusion scattering and chaotic advection give tracers the opportunity to leave the region of ellipsoidal symmetry and form a picture of shear flow symmetry. We use the method of characteristics to integrate the floating tracer density evolution equation and the Euler Ito scheme for obtaining the floating tracer trajectories with a random velocity field. The cluster area and cluster mass from the statistical topography are used as the quantitative diagnostics of a floating tracer’s clustering. For the case of a steady ellipsoidal vortex embedded into the deformation flow with a random velocity field component, we found that the clustering characteristics were weakened by the steady vortex. For the cases of an unsteady ellipsoidal vortex, we observed clustering in the floating tracer density field if the contribution of the divergent component was greater than or equal to that of the rotational (nondivergent) component. Even when the initial floating tracer patch was set on the boundary of the oscillating ellipsoidal vortex, we observed the formation of clusters. In the case of a rotating ellipsoidal vortex, we also observed pronounced clustering. Thus, we argue that unsteady ellipsoidal vortex regimes (oscillation and rotation), which induce chaotic motion of the nearby passive tracer’s trajectories, are still conducive to clustering of floating tracers observed in the density field, despite the intense deformation introduced by strain and shear.

Abstract:
Finish milling with a ball end mill is a key process in manufacturing high-precision and complex workpieces, such as dies and molds. Because of the complexity of the milling process, it is difficult to evaluate the microcharacteristics of machined surfaces real time, which necessitates the simulation of the process. In this area, the existing related simulation researches mainly focus on scallop height evaluation, but few have presented a whole picture of the microcharacteristics of milled surfaces. This paper develops a comprehensive simulation system based on a Z-map model for predicting surface topographic features and roughness formed in the finish milling process and studies the effect of machining parameters. The adoption of the discretization concept of the tool’s cutting motion makes it possible to dynamically track the cutting tool-workpiece interaction with the tool movement and to describe the cutting edges-workpiece discrete cutting interaction more realistically and, therefore, the microcharacteristics of the machined surfaces more accurately. Also, the effects of the cutting tool run-out and wear are incorporated into the developed model through modifying the tool center motion and the cutting-edge shape, respectively. As a fundamental study, the tool-swept envelope has been simulated. The developed simulation system is applied to thoroughly study the surface features formed by the 2.5-axis finish milling process. The application for general three-axis machining is discussed. Additionally, this paper studies the effect of the tool inclination, which is the most common characteristic in 3+2- or five-axis milling processes, on the machined surface features. Experiments are carried out to study the milling process and to verify the simulation results. The difference between the simulated and experimental results is discussed, and the reason behind the difference is explored.
