This thesis discusses the different components required to build and design a prototype for the Intelligent Parking Management (IPM) infrastructure. Different aspects of the hardware and software components used to build the prototype is also discussed in the thesis along with discussion of business and marketing strategies for the viability of the solution for commercial use. A prototype solution was built using hardware and software components. The prototype was tested for real-time parking meter availability information for both general web customers and smart device users such as PDA with wireless access and Smart Phone mobile devices using 3G technologies. The tests were conducted in a controlled environment with simulation data for real parking meters. The IPM prototype solution infrastructure built was able to provide real-time parking information. The information was accessible via the Internet through standard browsers and 3G enable Smart Phones. The integration between the hardware and software components and the IPM infrastructure design prototype was enabled through various technologies such as Microsoft .NET platform, Microsoft SQL Server 2000, Microsoft Mobile Internet toolkit, DTS, ASP.NET and ADO.NET. The thesis discusses these technologies and their interconnectivity within the IPM infrastructure.

Killmer, Paul F. "Paradise in the Parking Lot." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/44997.

Abstract:
Parking lots can no longer be the inhospitable, pedestrian-minimalizing, environmentally-degrading uses of valuable open space that are accepted and tolerated as the â normâ . The open space that makes way for parking lots is too precious to be wasted on places that provide little or no comfort to the user while also contributing to the degradation of the environment. By inserting a fantastical landscape â one which engages the senses through color, texture, and smell â into the mind-dulling landscape of a large surface parking lot, the resulting comparison is a waking call about the missed opportunities of celebrating beauty and the environment. This gives value to the landscape in todayâ s mobile society where the natural world appears to be losing ground to the automobile. This thesis proposes a series of landscape structures over a vast surface parking lot â Potomac Yard Shopping Center in Alexandria, Virginia â that provide open space, the ecological benefits of absorbing storm water runoff and preventing UV bounce back, while ultimately repositioning and rejoining the pedestrian with the landscape. The project does not set out to eradicate parking. Rather, the project recognizes the need for parking in todayâ s mobile society but prioritizes the important connection that must exist between people and nature within that context.

The purpose of this study is to determine what type of preventative maintenance for a concrete parking structure will produce the maximum economic benefit. Existing models for concrete deterioration are analyzed for their accuracy in predicting the service lives of concrete structures and a model appropriate for concrete parking structures is selected. The selected model is modified to account for the unique microclimate that is created within a parking structure and used to create deterioration curves that quantify the fraction of a structure deteriorated at a given time. Several preventative maintenance programs that summarize current practice in the repair of concrete parking structures are created. The programs are analyzed using the selected concrete deterioration model and the method of preventative maintenance that maximizes the net present worth of a concrete parking structure is identified.

Abstract:
The goal of this thesis is to design a coprocessor expansion board for an On Board Computer (OBC) using Commersial Off The Shelf (COTS) components. This is done in order to meet the increasing demand of more processing power as spacecrafts become more autonomous. After evaluating a number of different options, the LS1046A from ARM was chosen as the processing unit. This would increase the processing power from the current 110 Dhrystone Million Instructions Per Second (DMIPS) to a theoretical 22 560 DMIPS. The schematic was designed in DxDesigner, and after the layout was completed signal integrity simulations were performed in HyperLynx. After modifications to termination resistances, the simulations showed good signal integrity confirming proper routing of the signals. After receiving the manufactured Printed Circuit Board (PCB) with all components mounted, some tests could be performed confirming that the power distribution and the system clock was functioning properly.

Avgan, Utku. "Design And Control Of A Self-parking Model Car." Master's thesis, METU, 2003. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/1094648/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
A fuzzy logic control algorithm for self parking of a model car has been developed and an embedded controller hardware has been designed, manufactured and programmed to control parking maneuvers of a model car within the scope of this thesis study. The model car chassis consists of a DC motor actuated traction system and a servomotor actuated steering mechanism. Position data and parking place data is obtained by a sensory system. A stepper motor driven rotary table is designed and assembled to the model car chassis for positioning of the sensory system. The controller hardware includes all the required peripherals for interfacing to the motors and sensory system. A visual computer program running in PC environment is developed in order to simulate the control characteristics of the fuzzy logic algorithm. The program allows the user to generate fuzzy sets and fuzzy set members and allows the user to define membership functions and fuzzy rules. Once an appropriate control characteristic is obtained, all the parameters can be exported to a file in order to be downloaded to the controller.

Dokur, Omkar. "Embedded System Design of a Real-time Parking Guidance System." Scholar Commons, 2015. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/5939.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary objective of this work is to design a parking guidance system to reliably detect entering/exiting vehicles to a parking garage in a cost-efficient manner. Existing solutions (inductive loops, RFID based systems, and video image processors) at shopping malls, universities, airports etc., are expensive due to high installation and maintenance costs. There is a need for a parking guidance system that is reliable, accurate, and cost-effective. The proposed parking guidance system is designed to optimize the use of parking spaces and to reduce wait times. Based on a literature review we identify that the ultrasonic sensor is suitable to detect an entering/exiting vehicle. Initial experiments were performed to test the sensor using an Arduino based embedded system. Detection logic was then developed to identify a car after analyzing the initial test results. This logic was extended to trigger a camera to take an image of the vehicle for validation purposes. This system consists of Arduino, ultrasonic sensor, and a temperature sensor. It was installed and tested in Richard Beard Garage at the University of South Florida for five days. The test results of each trial are provided and average error for all the trials is calculated. The error cases occur due to golf carts, straddling cars on both entry/exit lanes, and people walking under the sensor. The average error of the system is 5.36% over five days (120 hrs). The estimated cost for one detector per lane is approximately $30.

Abstract:
This report represents the bachelor thesis examination by Julia Kastehelmi Rintamäki. The examination has been performed during spring semester 2013 at Volvo Construction Equipment in Eskilstuna. This report, Development of parking brake component, describes the product development process of the parking brake component for articulated hauler, wheel loader and grader. Volvo CE has problems with the parking brake switch that exist today on articulated hauler, wheel loader and grader. The purpose of this project is to develop one common solution for the parking brake component for articulated hauler, wheel loader and grader. The secondary purpose is to find final concept proposal for each machine. Employees at the Volvo CE were interviewed; they were contacted via e-mail, phone calls and via meetings to get the information about the machines and the information around the parking brake component. Volvo CE databases were also used for gathering information about standards and pictures. Lots of different ideas were sketched and concept proposals were created with the aid of material from marketing analysis, competitor analysis, target group analysis, requirement specification, function analysis, standards and ergonomics. Eight concept proposals were chosen to be evaluated with QFD, Pugh’s matrix and FMEA. Two concepts were most suitable and developed further to three dimensional models with the aid of Solid Works. The different aspects were taken into account when designing and dimensioning the final concepts. Two models were created with the aid of plasticine for figuring out the ergonomics and dimensions of the product. DFM, DFA, DFE, D4S were used for taking into account costs, assembly, dimensions and environmental impacts of this product. One of the concepts could replace the existing parking brake switch and suit in different cabins because of its size and design. This concept can be located on vertical or on horizontal plane. The other final concept solution functions better for the  articulated hauler on account of the double function with exhausting brake system activating before parking brake system. Suggestion for next steps for the project could be to make prototypes of the two concepts and test these components in real machines. Also interviewing users for further development of the final concepts and redesign if needed.

Kora, Sudhir Chandrasekar. "Design and Implementation of Wireles Sensor Networks for Parking Management System." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2005. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/2821.

Full text
Abstract:
The technology of wirelessly networked micro sensors promises to revolutionize the way we interact with the physical environment. A new approach to solve parking-related issues of vehicles in parking lots using wireless sensor networks is presented. This approach enables the implementation of the Parking Management System (PMS®) in public parking lots found in Airports, Commercial Buildings, Universities, etc. The design architecture of the sensor nodes is discussed here. An overall view of the sensor network, which covers the whole of the parking lot, is also summarized. Detailed description of the software architecture that supports the hardware is provided. A sample experiment for detecting the movement of vehicles by placing the sensor nodes allowing vehicles to pass over it is performed. The readings are sent to a local database server, which gives an indication of the actual number of vehicles parked in the building at any time. This application-oriented project also identifies important areas of further work in power management, communication, collaborative signal processing and parking management.

Ren, Lanbin. "Park-above-Parking Downtown: A Spatial-Based Investigation." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/12958.

Full text
Abstract:
Parking and parks are both crucial to downtown economic development. Many studies have shown that downtown parks significantly contribute to increasing surrounding property values and attract residents, businesses and investment. Meanwhile, sufficient available parking promotes accessibility to downtown that also contributes to increasing tax revenue for local government. However, both downtown parks and parking raise problems. Many downtown parks have become places for drug dealing, shooting and vandalism since the decline of downtowns in the 1960s. At the same time, residents and visitors alike oftentimes complain about the lack of parking while in fact parking spaces occupy a large amount of land in downtown. Parks and parking also compete for space in downtown where land value is higher than the rest of the city. To address these issues, several cities have begun to address the relationship between parking and parks by placing them in one place: park on the ground level and parking underneath. This typology is defined as a park-above-parking project in this research. However, this phenomenon has received little scholarly attention. To justify the existing situation of park-above-parking and to contemplate future projects, this research provides a spatial-based investigation to discuss the empirical relationships between social cultural and political-economic impacts, design quality, and related policy-making processes based on four cases. A longitudinal study that traces the direct and indirect impacts of park-above-parking projects was conducted for each case through both qualitative and quantitative methods. This research provides a set of methods for the measurement of contributions of park-above-parking downtown, connections between park quality, social use and adjacent economic growth, recommendations for land use planning policy-making and guidelines for the design of park-above-parking projects.

Abstract:
A successful landscape is one that allows people to feel comfortable within that landscape. Many people who live in an urban environment use gardens and parks as a way to balance their lives from the hard edge of what the world requires of them. That balance adds to the level of comfort and a decrease in stress. My thesis is to create a parking garage with that balance. A balance of hardscape with softscape, of practical uses with amenities, and of current methodology with progressive ideology. It will integrate parking and gardens, the static with the transitional. The proposal will create a balance between parking spaces where time is measured in hours with garden areas where time is measured in seasons. Thomas Jefferson said, â It takes time to persuade man to do even what is for his own good.â This thesis is an example of that. Something that will take time for people, companies, municipalities and governing bodies to aspire to but that will, ultimately, be to the benefit of everyone.

Gorgén, Matilda. "The Designer’s Mixer Board : Communicating Design and Formgiving." Thesis, KTH, Skolan för industriell teknik och management (ITM), 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-301861.

Full text
Abstract:
This report describes the background, methods and results of a master thesis project revolving around communication and form-giving in the product design process. Teo Enlund, former Associate Professor at KTH, who has developed a tool called the Designer’s Mixer Board, in which he draws a parallel from mixing music to discussing product design. The Designer’s Mixer Board has been used in industrial design centred courses at KTH to investigate brand platforms and ways to maintain brand coherency when introducing new product concepts to an existing brand. The purpose behind this thesis was to investigate how designers and their clients communicate on product design and if the designer’s mixer board can be a useful tool to facilitate and/or deepen the conversation. This covers conversations on formgiving between designers as well as conversations between designers and their clients. Additionally, this thesis aims to provide insights into what communicative methods and tools are used by industrial designers when designing products for a client and how the designers communicate with their clients throughout that process. Different methods and tools were used to investigate the questions posed in the purpose of this thesis, a literature study and an interview study were conducted to gather insight into what tools, methods were being used and previous work had been published in the field of design communication. In addition, a series of workshops were conducted to investigate the designer’s mixer board’s potential as a collaborative communication tool. The literature study and the interview study showed that articulated discussions on formgiving between designers and clients is rare. Designers communicate formgiving fluently amongst themselves due to similar expertise and work methods. However, it is the design outcome that is in focus not articulated discussion. The interviewees did not see the designer’s mixer board as a suitable tool for designer-client interaction but for collaborative work between designers. Based on the findings from the workshops the designer’s mixer board was deemed to have potential as a tool for deepened conversations on design and formgiving. The workshops did however not evaluate designer-client interactions.

Wang, Lei. "Printed Circuit Board Design for Frequency Disturbance Recorder." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/30917.

Full text
Abstract:

The FDR (Frequency Disturbance Recorder) is a data acquisition device for the power system. The device is portable and can be used with any residential wall outlet for frequency data collection. Furthermore, the FDR transmits calculated frequency data to the web for access by authorized users via Ethernet connection. As a result, Virginia Tech implemented Frequency Monitoring Network (FNET) with these FDR devices. FNET is a collection of identical FDRs placed in different measurement sites to allow for data integration and comparison. Frequency is an important factor for power system control and stabilization. With funding and support provided by ABB, TVA and NSF the FDRs are placed strategically all over the United States for frequency analysis, power system protection and monitoring.

The purpose of this study is to refine the current FDR hardware design and establish a new design that will physically fit all the components on one Printed Circuit Board (PCB). At the same time, the software that is to be implemented on the new board is to be kept similar if not the same as that of the current design. The current FDR uses the Axiom CME555 development board and it is interfaced to the external devices through its communication ports. Even through the CME555 board is able to meet the demands of the basic FDR operations, there are still several problems associated with this design. This paper will address some of those hardware problems, as well as propose a new board design that is specifically aimed for operations of FDR.

Abstract:
The Parking Guidance and Information (PGI) system is an important application of Intelligent Transport System (ITS), which has been shown to be an effect service for traffic information and parking management. The roadside Variable Message Sign (VMS) board has been the usual media for the publication of parking information in early PGI systems, and its performance over the years has been studied via simulations and questionnaire surveys. However, survey results show significant discrepancies across various traffic networks in different areas. More recently, parking information services have become available on other media such as mobile and in-vehicle devices. In contrast to VMS-based systems, PGI systems based on new media, especially the in-vehicle class of devices, have not been studied separately. This thesis aims to conduct research into the performance of PGI systems based on invehicle devices, by simulating and comparing a VMS-based PGI system with a Vehicle On-Board Device (VOBD)-based PGI system. A specially designed simulator utilising a routing algorithm known as the Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing protocol in computer networks, has been created in MATLAB. The simulation minimises the influence of specific structures of traffic networks that may be found in some networks, but not others. This is done by simulating a grid-based road network where the capacities of parking stations and their geographic distribution are randomly allocated within specific zones, and the parking demand in each run of simulations is variable load. The results of simulations, including the information reliability, reduction of travel time, demand on on-street parking and the utilisation rates of parking stations, are analysed for multiple scenarios where the compliance rate, the information update policy and the strategy of human behaviour are varied. The analyses reveal a significant advantage of VOBD-based PGI systems over VMS-based PGI systems in terms of the quality of information and the reduction of travel time. At the same time, the analyses highlight the limitations of a PGI system when the demand and supply of parking stations is not appropriately balanced.

Abstract:
The purpose of the project is to investigate the multi-story parking structures potential in relation to retrofit into public spaces. The project built on an alternative future scenario, there the amount of automobiles decreasing in our inner-city areas out from a mobility shift, linked to new technology and change of habits. This scenario will generate a spatial consequence on a city scale there several multi-story parking structures will become available for retrofitting into new types of uses and functions. This project investigates the potential and challenges of the retrofitting of multi-story parking structures out from contemporary practice, previous research, innovative projects and an actual case study of P-house Godsmagasinet in Malmö, Sweden. The work results in an exploratory design process in how P-house Godsmagasinet can be retrofitted into a public space out from a strategic design approach. There the design methodology is divided into different phases, to collect and use information simultaneously within the ongoing process. Through this project, I want to contribute with extended reflections and knowledge to the professions working with urban developments, and above all highlight the potential of the multi-story parking structure. The retrofitting of multi-story parking structures is related to sustainable urban development and is relevant in the professions dealing with contemporary and future urban environment issues, where I believe that this not only illustrates my own interest but is relevant to everyone who working with the urban environment.

Abstract:
Nowadays, smart city and urban mobility topics are focusing growing interest for business and R\&D purposes both, and one of its trendy application regards the study and the realization of parking recommendation systems. In our case, a parking recommendation system is going to be developed for the city of Bologna. After a brief revision of similar proposed solutions and their approaches and findings, a first data analysis phase is going to be executed to explore the data and to mine any useful information about the parking behavior. Then, once the adopted forecasting model has been exposed, the design and the development of the system are going to be described. In the end, the performances of the system are going to be evaluated under multiple points of view, considering some project-specific constraints too.

Chow, Leung Yen. "A philosophical design approach for an alternative concept for the urban parking garage." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28131.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes an expanded conceptualization of traditional parking garages. It is of contemporary design practice to separate the activity of parking from that of adjacent buildings and places. Doing so results in parking structures being exclusive and without positive urban context. As a consequence, barren and often, hostile environs are created within these garages. The thesis identifies this practice as a contributor to a discontinuity of urban movement and activity. The thesis also identifies the contradictory nature and ineffectiveness of facade decoration. Through four propositions developed from a philosophical design approach, which draws primarily from the work of Heidegger, the thesis proposes to engage human awareness so as to supplement the utilitarian nature of the traditional garage concept. It is suggested that doing so allows a positive environmental consciousness, and that active user participation can be elicited. It is also suggested that these propositions can potentially promote an integrity of construction and detailing, and that by overcoming the barren and hostile environs, a sense of civility and security can elevate the garage to a state of integrated function. Integrating the function of garages with those of other buildings can lead to a holistic use of site by facilitating urban continuity and, an architecture for garages richer in meaning than facade decoration.

Abstract:
Parking continually becomes an issue in the modern society. Not only appears in the large cities like New York or Chicago, on-campus parking also a big problem annoys students in lots of universities. With of smartphone development, many mobile applications are designed for solving the parking issues. This final thesis study is a concept multiplatform mobile application called 'ParkinVT', which designs for improved parking in Virginia Tech. This study covers all standard procedures of application design. First, the study of 'ParkinVT' started with the research of the background, equipment, and current parking regulations of Virginia Tech. Second, reviews of two existing parking mobile applications were carried out. Third, based on the materials and knowledge collected in the previous two steps, a working flow chart and wireframe of the UI of 'ParkinVT' were designed. Then, for ensuring the function settings of 'ParkinVT', a usability testing was conducted with the paper-based wireframe work. Three usability test processes in this study were entrance survey, usability testing with video recordings, and evaluation through exit survey. After the usability testing and analysis were finished, the design of 'ParkinVT' reached its final design step, which included logo design, graphic design, and UI design. In terms of the limitations of this study, future directions were also considered at the end of the design of 'ParkinVT'.

This thesis presents the design, development and initial implementation of a new commuter dashboard tool entitled AccessMyCommute for use by all MIT employees. This is the first in a series of new commuter benefit incentives that MIT will introduce during the 2015-2017 academic years to its employees in order to reduce parking demand and to increase campus sustainability. Previous research has suggested that both financial and non-monetary incentives can be effective at encouraging behavior change, and AccessMyCommute leverages that knowledge with the introduction of a number of non-monetary incentives including: real-time trip planning, carpool facilitation, and a leaderboard to exert social influence. The tool also provides a platform for introducing a variety of forms of financial incentives. Quality control and usability studies preceded implementation. Introduction of AccessMyCommute to the MIT community is documented, and a design for the first set of financial incentives is presented. The first set of financial incentives was conducted through the use of Point Programs in AccessMyCommute and all users were awarded points for their commutes based on levels of sustainability. Those points could then be redeemed for prizes including a small set-value or entries into lottery raffles for larger prizes. Initial results from the introduction of AccessMyCommute as well as the first point program suggest that in the absence of other incentives, particularly any disincentive to driving, commuters are unlikely to alter their mode. Point programs are effective as an incentive for commuters to log on to AccessMyCommute, but the number of employees participating is small and future work should aim to increase the number of participants. Finally, participation in the initial point program confirmed previous research that suggests that individuals exhibit riskseeking behavior in the face of uncertain gains. This information should be leveraged in future work with AccessMyCommute, particularly in conjunction with additional new commuter benefits and incentives to be offered by MIT in the next academic year.

Abstract:
In this thesis a multifunctional DC/DC converter board will be developed for utilization as an educational experiment set in the switched-mode power conversion laboratory of power electronic courses. The board has a generic power-pole structure allowing for easy configuration of various power converter topologies and includes buck, boost, buck-boost, flyback, and forward converter topologies. All the converters can be operated in the open-loop control mode with a switching frequency range of 30-100 kHz and a maximum output power of 20 W. Also the buck converter can be operated in voltage mode control and the buck-boost converter can be operated in peak-current-mode control for the purpose of demonstrating the closed loop control performance of DC/DC converters. The designed board allows for experimentation on the DC/DC converters to observe the macroscopic (steadystate/ dynamic, PWM cycle and low frequency) and microscopic (switching dynamic) behavior of the converters. In the experiments both such characteristics can be clearly observed such that students at basic learning level (involving only the macroscopic behavior), and students at advanced learning level (additionally involving the parasitic effects) can benefit from the experiments. The thesis reviews the switch mode conversion principles, gives the board design and proceeds with the experiments illustrating the capabilities of the experimental system.

For a long time, finding a parking lot always been a challenging task. After finding a parking lot, it still needs some pause steps to deal with parking fees, finding the parking space and other action to complete parking. There are some parking problems troubling drivers. There are many parking service apps on the market in response to these problems, but most of the apps are invented on a certain feature. It seems that no App can completely improve the process problems and inconveniences. In order to be able to design a parking service that can completely solve the problem and inconvenience, and is generally accepted, this study first investigates the potential problems of the existing parking service, and investigates the satisfaction of the parking lot users to the parking service through the questionnaire. And then improved parking service design by integrating questionnaires and representative parking services in the market. At last, using questionnaires to scale satisfaction and system usability of new parking service design. The results of the scale showed that users were generally satisfied with the new parking service designed in this study. The average SUS score of new parking service was 71.2, and the grade was C, indicating that the new design generally improved the original troubles and met the expectations of users.

This study focuses on the product design of an electronic parking brake (EPB) system. A complete product design procedure from market survey, quality function development (QFD) method, mechanical design, control design, system integration, and system test is provided. Market survey includes commercial products review and patent analyses. The EPB patent population increases year by year after 1996. In addition, there are many brands of commercial vehicles, such as Jaguar, Audi, Renault, BMW, and Volkswagen, installing the system as an essential requirement. As a result, the EPB system is expected to be bright in the vehicle industrial. However, there are many disadvantages needed to be improved, such as complexity, noise, high cost, and low efficiency. After the introduction and survey of EPB, design specifications of the system can be identified. The QFD method is used for the product development. QFD is used to transform the customers’ requirements to the measurable engineering requirements, compare the available products, and determine the design target. Then, three mechanism concepts are created and evaluated. The best one, including a operator, a reducer, a self-locker, a manual releaser, and a balancer, is selected to be embodied. FEA is used to help select materials and ensure the enough strength after the CAD model is developed Finally, PC-based method is used to integrate the mechanism and electronics. The LabVIEW program controls the EPB in the virtual environment with considerations of various driving conditions. In addition, the sensor switch signals are fed back to PC to ensure the parking success. Then, testing instrumentation is built to verify the pulling force and practicability. Furthermore, the relation between the input motor torque and the output brake force is found for the application to other vehicles. Finally, the system specifications are compared with the QFD targets to be the criterion for future designs.

This paper proposed the trajectory algorithm with the minimum turning radius for the automatic parking system. The automatic parking system makes parking more convenient. The automatic parking system is an extension of parking assist system. Parking assist system mainly uses image processing or infrared and ultrasonic sensor to sense obstacles and parking assist system needs a much more parking space. In order to fill up this gap, the study attempts to improve part of trajectory algorithm by combining the minimum turning radius in order to substantially reduce the parking space into 1.43 times the length of the automobile.

The techniques of image processing, fuzzy logic control, or path planning in automatic parking system need more complexity computation and fast real time response. Normally, using the hardware to implement the automatic parking system have higher performance than using software. In this work, we propose an automatic parking system to improve the parking computation time and implement this system into FPGA for a car-like vehicle. The detection of parking space unit, control unit and decision of vehicle position unit are implemented into a single FPGA device to reduce parking computation time. Experiment results show that the proposed car-like vehicle can reduce parking space and reduce the parking computation time.

It has been long recognized that magnificent demand for transportation in cities makes traffic and environmental problems. One of the problems is the parking issue. Because of the uncertainty of vacant parking spots, drivers cruise for parking spots on street, which does not only frustrate the drivers but also worsen the traffic and air quality. For the urban freight transportation, many vehicles load and unload cargos just in front of the shops, even illegally double parking on the busy lanes. This might fasten the delivery service, but is not acceptable and allowable by law. Therefore, this research develops a parking reservation system that considers the uncertain availability of parking spots, and the uncertain demand for parking. As a result, the proposed reservation system decreases the searching time for parking spots, while increasing the income for the parking facility operators, and thereby improves urban traffic and air quality. In practice, there is not yet a parking reservation system. Besides, the actual parking behaviors are influenced by complex factors. Hence we use simulation technique as our major research method. In the research, we develop two simulation-based parking reservation systems, which are first come-first serve (FCFS) reservation system and, DISTINCT reservation system. We simulate different conditions and calculate the performance measurements, namely the number of completed cars, the searching time savings, the number of rejected freight vehicles, the total income for the parking facility operators (including the parking fee and the reservation fee). Based on the simulation results of 20 replications and compared to the scenario without the reservation system, the FCFS reservation system reduces searching time by 85% on average ( by 94% in the best case and by 81.52% in the worst case). In terms of the total revenue, there is an increase of 30.37% on average, (44.92% the maximum and 12.34% the minimum). Between FCFS and DISTINCT, FCFS serves more reservations than DISTINCT does, because there is a restriction on number of reservation in DISTINCT. In more crowded parking environment, the situation is more obvious. Therefore using FCFS reservation system can not only reduce more searching time, but also increase more total revenue.

Recently, Energy Saving and Carbon Reduction have received much attention. A variety of executed construction projects aim at energy saving. In these projects, most energy is consumed for lighting which needs to be mainly improved. For instance, the lights in the parking lot are always turned on whether or not someone is there. Hence, it leads to energy wastage. This paper aims to design an embed-ded control module embedding Octopus X module. The designed control module can automatically control the lights and guide people to their parking space by following the light-path so that manpower and en-ergy consumption can be reduced. The designed module sends control signals through Zigbee network, hence the de-ployment cost can be reduced.

Recently, the progress of wireless communication technology has brought the rapid popularity of smart phones. Therefore, diverse smart phone-based applications (App) have been developed. To provide drivers the useful traffic and parking information, this thesis designs and develops a system to reserve parking spaces. The proposed system consists of three subsystems: a cellular phone-based reservation subsystem, a parking ticket recognition subsystem, and a parking management subsystem. The proposed system not only provides drivers the available parking lots in the vicinity, but also supports the reservation of parking spaces. All the functions of the proposed system are validated via experimental tests, and the results show that the proposed system can work correctly. Overall, the proposed system achieves the concept of online to offline (O2O). It can provide the real-time and convenient information about parking spaces and save the time cost of drivers for searching the available parking lots.

In recent years, with the rapid changes in science and technology, economic development in various countries has also depended on the use of energy and technology. Under the dual parallel of science and technology and economy, environmental pollution has become an issue that needs urgent attention. On the other hand, Taiwan’s economy has grown. Driven by the increase in the number of small cars held each year, and the signs of migration from rural areas to urban areas, the density of urban population has risen rapidly. The traditional process of searching for parking spaces is inefficient, and the repeated search caused by delayed information has caused serious air pollution. Based on these two factors, the establishment of a comprehensive parking lot search system is an important issue. We hope to reduce the time and cost of repetitive search. Therefore, this study provides a choice of parking lots optimized for users with multiple destinations, taking into account the time window of the charging period, with the minimum total distance as the goal. Combine the governments open and real-time data, and use the gene algorithm to perform cloud computing to find an optimal parking lot for destinations.

Great medical technology achievements were made in the last century, hence seniors have reached to 11% of total population in Taiwan, nearly 14% as “aging society”defined by World Health Organization, WHO. In aging, with multiple physiological degeneration, seniors become reluctant or fear to go out, affects their social activities directly. By literature review and observation, designer can hardly find recreations suitable for seniors. TV programs and sleep fill up their daily life. Physical degeneration and diseases interfere with mental status, and lacking of physical exercise makes aging even faster. Designer found this issue urgent to be addressed, hence ambitious to design games especially for the seniors. Analysis indicates games bring energy to seniors and slow down aging process, brain-storming game helps to blood circulation, prevent from Alzheimer''s and memory loss. In Taiwan, the games sold to the seniors are most derived from children’s, not suitable for the seniors of strong self-esteem. To facilitate the design of seniors’ board game, the designer volunteered in nursing home, to observe and chat with seniors to understand better their requirement and preference. Thorough explore to the seniors’growth backgrounds, political and economic changes, life style and culture difference was done to establish the base, then introduce new elements to their experience. According to vision principle and social workers’ comments, 5 sets of games are designed with large scale, vivid colors and easy carry out, namely “Old Street Millionaire”, “Smart-Quick drawer”, “Domino”, “Fast Chief”, “Number Winner”. Each board games was test-run in nursing house with social workers and caregivers and their recommendations to the designs well received. Afterwards, seniors participated and enjoyed the board games conducted by the designer, which the aim of this design in the first place. However, watching with naked eyes, the size of characters, details improvement and commercialized require further amend. Issue of recreations for the seniors need further concern and more investigation and resources to be put in from all departments, this, to make everyone’s elderly life happier and respectful.

ABSTRACT Recently, transport and information and communication technology (ICT) has changed quickly. The concept of ‘smart living’ has arisen brings forth the living convenience, which continuously upgrades people’s living standard. In spite of blossoming economy, social and cultural development, the problem---trigged by parking---of the traffic capacity for action are the issues we have to face every day. These very imperative problems caused by smart living are hard to be eschewed. In the modern development of ICT, it is an inclination that every industry moves towards to intellectualization. Hence, under the requirementsof smart living and the emergence of service-oriented economy, the parking service innovation is supposed to be coped with in multi-faceted ways. Nowadays, solutions of parking lot are equipped with vehicle identification, e-Tag parking identification, vehicle search systems, present parking space detectors, automatic fare collection system of parking towers, and electronic toll collection system of curb parking spaces. From this perspective, thir research ---by virtue of the service-oriented logic, and design science methodology---intends to mark out and design a series of novel smart parking system services. Hopefully, the present parking lot service models and soultions can and will be innovated. By the process and the method of “Service Design Thinking,” and by the stakeholder interviews and the secondary data collection, this research not solely investigates the problems of the present parking services, but pain points its inconvenience. These identified pain points are to be resolved by service design thinking. Only by the innovative smart parking service models and its service blueprint can the drivers enjoy its convenience. In this thesis, we develop a guiding system for parking lot based on image processing and database. In traditional parking lot, drivers know the count of the empty parking spaces, but have no idea where the available parking space is. Consequently, we hope to get vehicle’s position in image processing way, further provide guiding information to drivers then guide vehicles to their chosen parking space. The main functions of the system are multiple-object tracking and guidance. In the tracking work, we predict the object’s position by image’s continuity, detect the occurrence of bump condition as well as develop wide area monitoring with the aid of multiple-camera cooperation mechanism. In guiding work, we are able to obtain the guide direction by searching guiding data in database according to vehicle’s position, moving direction and destination.

This thesis presents the design and implementation of the intelligent automatic parking controller and accomplishes it in a smart car. This car possesses the function to accept the command from the personal digital assistant (PDA), and estimates the environment by integration of infrared and ultrasonic sensors. All calculation and control rules are achieved by field programmable gate array (FPGA). This controller can not only achieve PDA’s commands, but also decide the space of garages and park well. On the unable parking condition, the controller will transmit the warning signal to PDA. In the thesis, we first describe the system architecture that includes the FPGA unit, the PDA unit, the wireless unit, the infrared sensors and the ultrasonic sensors. Secondly, we present control rules of parallel parking, garage parking and self parking. The very high hardware description language (VHDL) is used to design the circuits of the controller. Finally, it is perceived that our intelligent autonomous parking controller is feasible from the computer simulations and the practical experiments.

Today, with the maturity of the Internet of Things technology, the information generated by parking activities in several counties and cities of Taiwan has become an important resource for traffic management systems.Currently, the wisdom of off-road parking lots in Taiwan, such as license plate recognition, RFID reading, parking space detection, parking space guidance, parking fund management and connection in series of payment of flow of gold, have reached their expiration and have been replaced gradually The parking administration staff invested in the project; however, road parking in Taiwan is still in the manual billing stage. Today, when the Internet of Things technology is maturing, the intelligent technology of related applications in off-street parking lots should also be applied to the on-street parking bill. In this way, when the management of the street parking bill is smart, it can improve the parking charges on the street, the administration efficiency, also solve the shortage of current labor in Taiwan. In this study, an integrated automatic parking billing system is completed with a photo surveillance lens combined with image motion detection combined with license plate image recognition. The recommendation for the parking space is to use the instant vacancy data to integrate the owner's parking space to the parking destination radius, to help him find the parking space that meets the owner's time and location, and to actively allocate parking space informations. Besides, the system will not provide a paper of parking ticket after the system opens automatically, so the system will provide a multiple payment mechanism for the owner can pay through different forms such as electronic payment, mobile payment, automatic deduction , payment through the supermarkets etc., after leaving the parking space.

Rapid development of the economy and population explosion result in traffic congestion. The air quality is worse than before, which is caused by the emission from the majority of vehicles stopping on the road inevitably. Thus, in order to solve environmental pollution and reduce the cost that people made on the road, such as money and time, the Intelligent Transport System was proposed. The Intelligent Transport System contains nine subsystems, and Intelligent Traffic is a part of it. Intelligent Traffic is composed of data collection system, transmission system and path algorithm. However, if people could get information about destination in advance, they could avoid drive toward congested road. Therefore, this paper chooses Intelligent Parking Lot as the goal of the Intelligent traffic. Intelligent Traffic which providing a important decision reference to decide path for people, is a part of Intelligent Transport System. But there are no system to fully manage informations about parking lots in Taiwan. Besides, the equipments of parking lot cost too much, and the characteristics of parking place sensor are mostly fixed-based, in other words, poor portability. In trend of the era of information explosion, because there are no contaction among parking lot, cloud server and business district, leading to informations are not immediately, and parking cost opaque. Based on above description, this paper proposed three designing characteristics about the parking lot: 1. Design cloud server to manage the parking lot and the business district and that provides people reserve parking place, inquire about information, and discount parking cost. 2. The parking equipment, with higher portability, results in quickly installation and dismount, and higher beneficial usage of land. 3. Abstract:
The existing parking simulations, as most simulations, are intended to gain insights of a system or to make predictions. The knowledge they have provided has built up over the years, and several research works have devised detailed parking system models. This thesis work describes the use of an agent-based parking simulation in the context of a bigger parking system development. It focuses more on flexibility than on fidelity, showing the case where it is relevant for a parking simulation to consume dynamically changing GIS data from external, online sources and how to address this case. The simulation generates the parking occupancy information that sensing technologies should eventually produce and supplies it to the bigger parking system. It is built as a Java application based on the MASON toolkit and consumes GIS data from an ArcGis Server. The application context of the implemented parking simulation is a university campus with free, on-street parking places.

The Automatic Pay Station in the self-service technologies belongs to interactive kiosks in the interactive services. Users have their need by the self-service way through the services. Therefore, interface design is an important role in the Automatic Pay Station. This paper was conducted to investigate the current situation through the observation. On the same time developed an interactive way to establish simple and low-cost simulation technology to carry experiments. It’s to discuss the action with the interface of difference visual priming effects in the Automatic Pay Station. The conclusion of this research (1) To user, the result of good performance is in guiding lights and the numeral makes users full of intuition. (2) We suggest both interface could be input together and to have user’s effects. (3) Automatic Pay Station interface should be designed and to balance on the position of the design, in the best situations to improve more service. (4) For this research, we create a low-cost and simple simulator device to designers can quickly and efficiently test their design ideas.

Control strategy design of autonomous parallel parking using a self-organizing fuzzy controller (SOFC) is proposed in this paper. Ultrasonic radars are used to establish the parking space relative to the vehicle. Trajectory planning can be applied to obtain the reference trajectory and steering angle. The reference steering angle is used for feed-forward compensation. Trajectory estimation is used to obtain the lateral position error and orientation error with respect to the reference trajectory. These two errors are inputs to the SOFC and the control output is the steering angle correction. Preliminary simulation and experimental results show that the proposed SOFC with feed-forward compensation can achieve better trajectory following and reduce the length requirement of parking space.

Nowadays in Taiwan there are lots of job opportunity focus on big city, therefore the architectural type is going to high or even super high buildings to solve the rising residential demand. In the meanwhile, it’s inevitable trendy of planning and design the basement to parking lot to solve the parking issue of high or even high buildings. The parking lot is a confined space, if the emission from vehicle can’t be exhausted efficiently, the air quality in parking lot will be bad. Currently in Taiwan, the regulations and researches for air quality in parking lot in high or super high buildings are still lacking. This study case is chosen from a new building in Taichung city to research parking lot ventilation by FDS which can simulate the emission of CO, CO2 and temperature from vehicle to estimate the air quality pattern in underground parking lot. Therefore it could understand which kind of ventilation design in underground parking lot is related to emission concentration from vehicle. According to different ventilation design pattern, air flow, emission concentration and temperature, this study simulate the situation of the maximum vehicle engine on at same time in the underground parking lot by FDS to approach the authenticity. Meanwhile it can also review the regulations for underground parking lot is suitable. In the simulation result of different ventilation design, the best way to control emission concentration and emission temperature is mechanical air intake plus mechanical exhaust. The second way to control it is natural air inlet plus mechanical exhaust without split-type air, but this way will cause the whole flow field split in half; the emission concentration and temperature in exhaust is extremely high. If it is natural air plus mechanical exhaust with split-type air, the emission concentration and temperature will spread to whole underground parking lot and the environment is worsen. At last the worst environment is without any ventilation design in underground parking lot. In the future according to the back-parking habit to design the ventilation of underground parking lot in high or super high buildings, it should design Induced Flow Jet Fan above each parking space to increase the air flow of emission. Nowadays the parking lot ventilation equipment is always launch on by time meter, so there is not any ventilation system on during the time meter which is off. The suggestion of this study is to set up air quality monitoring system which is 24 hours automatically start to achieve good air quality in underground parking lot.
