Abstract:
This monograph presents recent advances in neural network (NN) approaches and applications to chemical reaction dynamics. Topics covered include: (i) the development of ab initio potential-energy surfaces (PES) for complex multichannel systems using modified novelty sampling and feedforward NNs; (ii) methods for sampling the configuration space of critical importance, such as trajectory and novelty sampling methods and gradient fitting methods; (iii) parametrization of interatomic potential functions using a genetic algorithm accelerated with a NN; (iv) parametrization of analytic interatomic potential functions using NNs; (v) self-starting methods for obtaining analytic PES from ab inito electronic structure calculations using direct dynamics; (vi) development of a novel method, namely, combined function derivative approximation (CFDA) for simultaneous fitting of a PES and its corresponding force fields using feedforward neural networks; (vii) development of generalized PES using many-body expansions, NNs, and moiety energy approximations; (viii) NN methods for data analysis, reaction probabilities, and statistical error reduction in chemical reaction dynamics; (ix) accurate prediction of higher-level electronic structure energies (e.g. MP4 or higher) for large databases using NNs, lower-level (Hartree-Fock) energies, and small subsets of the higher-energy database; and finally (x) illustrative examples of NN applications to chemical reaction dynamics of increasing complexity starting from simple near equilibrium structures (vibrational state studies) to more complex non-adiabatic reactions. The monograph is prepared by an interdisciplinary group of researchers working as a team for nearly two decades at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK with expertise in gas phase reaction dynamics; neural networks; various aspects of MD and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of nanometric cutting, tribology, and material properties at nanoscale; scaling laws from atomistic to continuum; and neural networks applications to chemical reaction dynamics. It is anticipated that this emerging field of NN in chemical reaction dynamics will play an increasingly important role in MD, MC, and quantum mechanical studies in the years to come.

Spoletini, Giulia, and Nicholas S. Hill. Non-invasive positive-pressure ventilation. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199600830.003.0090.

Full text
Abstract:
Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) has been increasingly used over the past decades to avoid endotracheal intubation (ETI) in critical care settings. In selected patients with acute respiratory failure, NIV improves the overall clinical status more rapidly than standard oxygen therapy, avoids ETI and its complications, reduces length of hospital stay, and improves survival. NIV is primarily indicated in respiratory failure due to acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiogenic pulmonary oedema and associated with immunocompromised states. Weaker evidence supports its use in other forms of acute hypercapnic and hypoxaemic respiratory failure. Candidates for NIV should be carefully selected taking into consideration the risk factors for NIV failure. Patients on NIV who are unstable or have risk factors for NIV failure should be monitored in an intensive or intermediate care units by experienced personnel to avoid delay when intubation is needed. Stable NIV patients can be monitored on regular wards.

Gollan, Paul J. Employer Strategies Towards Non‐Union Collective Voice. Edited by Adrian Wilkinson, Paul J. Gollan, Mick Marchington, and David Lewin. Oxford University Press, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199207268.003.0009.

Abstract:
Non-union collective voice (NCV) has tended to play a minimal role in many Anglo industrial relations systems, with few formal processes or legal requirements. However, the lack of representative structures covering increasing numbers of non-union employees due to declining levels of trade union density and legislative changes banning closed shop or compulsory union arrangements have prompted the current interest in NCV arrangements. This article explores management strategies towards, and the development of, NCV arrangements and union responses to such arrangements in predominately English-speaking countries. It also tracks the development of dual-channel NCV and union voice arrangements, and examines the interplay between channels of NCV and trade unions. Overall, the article reviews this theory and raises debates around management strategies and issues involved in the process of transition from NCV to unionism.

Rota, Paul A., and William J. Bellini. Zoonotic paramyxoviruses. Oxford University Press, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198570028.003.0047.

Full text
Abstract:
Hendra virus (HeV), Nipah virus (NiV), and Menangle virus (MenV) are recently emergent paramyxoviruses that are responsible for zoonotic infections and represent potential threats to agriculture and humans. In particular, HeV and NiV cause fatal disease in animals and man, and outbreaks of NiV continue to occur almost annually in Southeast Asia. Molecular biologic studies have made substantial contributions to the characterization of these new paramyxoviruses by providing an accurate picture of their relative taxonomic positions, and molecular techniques were used to provide rapid diagnostic capabilities. In the outbreaks of NiV in Malaysia, Bangladesh, and India, molecular biological data quickly identified the etiologic agent present, and RT-PCR and serologic assays were used to rapidly confirm NiV infections in humans and animals. There has only been one report of human illness due to MenV and one study has detected an antibody response to a related rubulavirus, Tioman virus (TiV), in humans. It is interesting that all of these viruses share a common reservoir in large fruit bats. Because of their clear potential to cause severe disease in humans and animals, NiV and HeV have been designated as Class C Select Agents and have been the focus of intense study since their emergence.
