Abstract:
This chapter looks at the Associated Negro Press (ANP) and its competitor, the Negro Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), in the early postwar era. In any case, in the early postwar era, both the ANP and the NNPA had competitors beyond the mainstream, among them the United Negro Press in Durham, North Carolina, and 13 others of the same caliber. Thus, by 1960, the NNPA agency was defunct. The ANP, on the other hand, had about 80 subscribers in the 1920s and 112 by 1945, then 60 by 1955 but 101 by 1964. This latter soaring was misleading in that it represented growth in Africa that was soon to be challenged by indigenous and mainstream competitors. In response, the ANP sought to centralize, requesting that certain sources forward information solely to their Chicago office, rather than affiliates. Nevertheless, it was evident that opportunities for ANP expansion were delimited: hence Claude Barnett's tendency to look abroad increasingly for investments.

Abstract:
This monograph presents recent advances in neural network (NN) approaches and applications to chemical reaction dynamics. Topics covered include: (i) the development of ab initio potential-energy surfaces (PES) for complex multichannel systems using modified novelty sampling and feedforward NNs; (ii) methods for sampling the configuration space of critical importance, such as trajectory and novelty sampling methods and gradient fitting methods; (iii) parametrization of interatomic potential functions using a genetic algorithm accelerated with a NN; (iv) parametrization of analytic interatomic potential functions using NNs; (v) self-starting methods for obtaining analytic PES from ab inito electronic structure calculations using direct dynamics; (vi) development of a novel method, namely, combined function derivative approximation (CFDA) for simultaneous fitting of a PES and its corresponding force fields using feedforward neural networks; (vii) development of generalized PES using many-body expansions, NNs, and moiety energy approximations; (viii) NN methods for data analysis, reaction probabilities, and statistical error reduction in chemical reaction dynamics; (ix) accurate prediction of higher-level electronic structure energies (e.g. MP4 or higher) for large databases using NNs, lower-level (Hartree-Fock) energies, and small subsets of the higher-energy database; and finally (x) illustrative examples of NN applications to chemical reaction dynamics of increasing complexity starting from simple near equilibrium structures (vibrational state studies) to more complex non-adiabatic reactions. The monograph is prepared by an interdisciplinary group of researchers working as a team for nearly two decades at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK with expertise in gas phase reaction dynamics; neural networks; various aspects of MD and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of nanometric cutting, tribology, and material properties at nanoscale; scaling laws from atomistic to continuum; and neural networks applications to chemical reaction dynamics. It is anticipated that this emerging field of NN in chemical reaction dynamics will play an increasingly important role in MD, MC, and quantum mechanical studies in the years to come.

Abstract:
India, the second most populated country in the world has more than six million people needing palliative care but only 2 per cent have access to it. The state of Kerala with a positive approach towards palliative care shown both by the government and the public has extensive coverage by the government institutions and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO), but in rest of the country mostly NGOs are the palliative care providers. Volunteering has long been considered an integral part of palliative care programmes but there are varying extents to which volunteers participate in the process and their numbers vary from state to state, with Kerala topping the list. The Neighbourhood Network in Palliative Care (NNPC) in Kerala is an attempt to develop sustainable community owned services led by volunteers capable of offering comprehensive long-term care (LTC) and palliative care (PC) to those in need.

Abstract:
Each year, approximately 230 million major surgical procedures are undertaken worldwide, with over three-quarters of the patients complaining of pain postoperatively and 10% complaining of severe pain. Pain is not, however, just an unpleasant sensory consequence of surgery, but can also have significant physiological implications impacting negatively on well-being and postoperative outcome. Postoperative pain may also result in changes within the central nervous system, leading to the development of chronic pain states lasting in excess of 3–6 months. Adequate analgesia has proven to be effective when employed in the perioperative period at combating many of these adverse effects. An understanding of the basic physiological and pharmacological mechanisms responsible for producing, transmitting, and sustaining pain has allowed for a variety of effective analgesic agents to be fashioned and used clinically to treat pain. Morphine, the archetypal opioid analgesic, is the most familiar of these agents with a long history of use and evidence of effectiveness; morphine possesses a number-needed-to-treat (NNT) to reduce pain by 50% of around 3 when given in doses of between 10 and 15 mg. Non-steroidal agents and paracetamol are similarly effective in the immediate postoperative period with NNTs of between 2 and 4. More recently, a number of analgesic adjuncts such as gabapentin, pregabalin, ketamine, clonidine, and nefopam have found favour for the treatment of acute postoperative pain. None of these agents, however, are without side-effects, ensuring that the search for effective analgesic agents continues to be a vibrant area of research with new analgesic agents continuing to be developed.
