Stevens, Timothy. "Rehab Tracker: Framework for Monitoring and Enhancing NMES Patient Compliance." ScholarWorks @ UVM, 2019. https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/graddis/1001.

Abstract:
We describe the development of a cyber-physical system (Rehab Tracker) for improving patient compliance with at-home physical rehabilitation using neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) therapy. Rehab Tracker consists of three components: 1) hardware modifications to sense and store use data from an FDA-approved NMES therapy device and provide Bluetooth communication capability, 2) an iOS-based smartphone/tablet application to receive and transmit NMES use data and serve as a conduit for patient-provider interactions and 3) a back-end server platform to receive device use data, display compliance data for provider review and provide automated positive and remedial push notifications to patients to improve compliance. This system allows for near real-time compliance monitoring via a secure web portal and offers a novel conduit for patient-provider communication during at-home rehabilitation to improve compliance. The system was tested in patients (n=5) who suffered anterior cruciate ligament rupture and surgical repair to provide proof-of-principal evidence for system functionality and an initial assessment of system usability. The system functioned as designed, recording 89% of rehabilitation sessions. Thus, Rehab Tracker is a functionally correct system with the potential to be used as a tool for studying NMES and mobile communication methodologies at scale and improving compliance with at-home rehabilitation programs.

Abstract:
På hemsidan för NME ställs frågan ”Does This Actually Work?” och svaret som ges är ”As surprising as it sounds, NME really works. You do not need to spend your time messing with cross-platform compatibility, but you also do not have to sacrifice runtime performance or access to platform features.”.

Abstract:

De delades in i två grupper.

This paper is a study of GPS operating principles from satellites to user-accessible signals. The examination is done by taking into account all the possible errors and how they are corrected in order to make the system more accurate. After system operation analysis tests of GPS data accuracy are made. The position of a point is measured using several GPS receivers. Those receivers are made by different manufacturers, so we can observe the dependency of accuracy according to manufacturer and different number of processor channels. It appeared that receivers have very similar errors. The work is continued by data accuracy improvement algorithms analysis. Finally an algorithm is suggested to improve positioning data precision moving on map and predict the event of a failure to communicate with satellites.

Abstract:
Background: Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is increasingly being usedoutside the realms of physical therapy. Acknowledged as an efficient method to enhancestrength parameters, athletes are increasingly using NMES to facilitate training andstrength gains. A review was designed with a systematic approach with the mainobjective: to assess the effectiveness of transcutaneous NMES on maximal strength inphysical education students, trained and elite athletes in studies involving isometricNMES and Dynamic NMES. Method: A search for all types of trials was performed onPubmed, Sportdiscus, Web of Science Core Collection and The Cochrane ControlledTrials Register, and results were recorded according to the PRISMA recommendations.Twenty-one studies were included and judged for risk of bias and quality according tothe Cochrane guidelines and GRADE. Results: Studies were judged as having either anunclear or high risk of bias. All studies were judged as ‘very low level’ according toGRADE and were lacking bias-limiting methods, detailed information of interventionsand general standardised procedures. Conclusion: Strength gains in physical educationstudents, trained or elite athletes from a training intervention involving either isometricNMES combined with or without voluntary exercise or dynamic NMES are inconclusivedue to the very low level of the quality of the studies. Meta-analysis performed in thisarea should be interpreted with caution as the studies have been judged as eitherunclear or high risk of bias.Key words: isometric NMES (electrical stimulation applied to relaxed muscle), dynamicNMES (electrical stimulation superimposed onto voluntary contractions), strength.

Chang, Shie. "An investigation of the role of the MDM2-NME interaction in cancer cells." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2014. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/2003899/.

Full text
Abstract:
MDM2 is a proto-oncogene well known for its role as a negative regulator of the p53 tumour suppressor. It has also been demonstrated that co-upregulation of MDM2 and wild-type p53 is linked with reduced disease specific survival in renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Moreover, MDM2 expression has been shown to promote cell motility and invasiveness in several cancer cell types including RCC cells in a p53- and RING-finger- independent manner, suggesting a role for protein-protein interactions in mediating this effect. The work presented in this thesis has aimed to study the role of MDM2 interaction with other proteins, in particular with members of the NME (Non-metastatic protein) family of metastasis suppressing genes, in order to decipher the mechanisms of action by which MDM2 may contribute to a more aggressive phenotype in cancer cells. To accomplish this we have used a range of methodologies including investigating the consequences of MDM2 expression using exon array analysis in an attempt to identify changes in gene expression induced by wild type MDM2 (Clone 9) and an MDM2 RINGmutant (RFM9) expressed stably in clonal derivatives of H1299 cells. In parallel studies in our research group, an interaction was identified between MDM2 and NME2. Since NME2 is a member of a family of genes that has been implicated in metastasis suppression, and since metastatic spread is a primary determinant of patient survival, we also focused on an analysis of this interaction. Thus the primary aim of this work became an examination of the mechanistic details and consequences of MDM2-NME interaction in cancer cells. The two most highly expressed forms of NME genes in most cell types are the highly related NME1 and NME2 genes which both encode nucleoside diphosphate kinase (NDPK) activity, essential for maintaining cellular pools of nucleoside triphosphates. They are also metastasis suppressor genes with an ability to suppress cellular motility. Since MDM2 possesses an E3 ubiquitin ligase activity, we have investigated whether MDM2 has an ability to modify NME proteins by ubiquitinating them and also whether MDM2 modulates the NDPK activity of NME proteins and/or their motility suppressing activity. Our results suggest that MDM2 may abrogate motility suppressive effects of NME2 through down-regulation of NME2 (and also of NME1) protein levels with potential consequences for suppression of NDPK activity. More interestingly, our studies have identified NM23-LV, which is derived from a specific read-through transcription and alternative splicing event of the adjacent NME1 and NME2 genes, as an MDM2-interacting protein. In addition, we have identified NM23-LV as a novel substrate for MDM2-mediated ubiquitination that occurs in an MDM2 E3 ligase activity-dependent manner. Ubiquitination of NM23-LV by MDM2 seems to be highly specific, since neither NME1 nor NME2 are substrates for MDM2-mediated ubiquitination. Furthermore, our results have also shown that NM23-LV can substantially promote MDM2 stabilisation and enhance MDM2-dependent p53 inactivation, adding another layer of complexity to the interactions between MDM2 and NME family members. Functional studies of NM23-LV have suggested that NM23-LV plays a role in promoting cell motility, which contrasts with the canonical role of NME1 and NME2 as metastasis suppressors. Taken together, studies presented in this thesis have identified a novel relationship between MDM2 and NM23-LV, which could provide valuable insights into the underlying mechanisms leading to increased cell motility promoted by MDM2 and suggests that new studies examining how MDM2-NME interactions may regulate cell motility and cancer metastasis are needed. Given the role of MDM2 in promoting more aggressive RCCs, insights gained from these studies may ultimately identify opportunities for therapeutic interventions for RCC, as well as for other human cancers.

Abstract:
In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the use of Global Positioning Satellite system (GPS) technology, consequently the usage of GPS receivers has increased. These GPS receivers can be used as a synchronization source for radio base stations by generating precise 1 pulse per second signals and providing National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) data. The prototype developed in this thesis, implements a GPS receiver emulator to emulate a GPS receiver which is to be used for radio base station synchronization. Hardware and software have been used to generate the NMEA messages and to generate a precise 1 pulse per second signal. A graphical user interface (GUI) has been created in order to allow the operators of the emulator to input various parameters to the system used to emulate a GPS receiver. Using this emulator avoids the need for expensive GPS receivers and their connection to an antenna with a good view of the GPS satellites. More importantly, this GPS receiver emulator makes it easier to set up a lab environment for testing different situations with regard to signaling with NMEA data between the emulated GPS receiver and the radio base station equipment that is under test. For example, this allows tests involving incorrect NEMA messages or non once per second pulses.

Abstract:
The project aims to design and implementation of navigation in GIS surweys. The system must be able to operate globally and deal with several types of navigation tasks in relation to the means of transport by which the navigation is carried out. One of the tasks is also to improve the course of navigation errors resulting from the removal of inaccuracies in the focus position and technical limitations of GPS, such as low frequency of the input data for guidance. Problems of low frequency of the input data is dealt with through the prediction of movement, which enabled the smooth display output users. Because it is not possible to completely test the system in operation, it created a simulation tool that lets you track the behavior of navigation in all situations. The document contains an analysis of the problem in terms of geography, the definition of the problems of orientation in space and their mathematical solution and an outline of implementation.

Abstract:
Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a modality of electrotherapy which is aiming to restore and improve muscle function by injecting small levels of current into the muscle using different types of electrodes. Advantages are seen in using textile electrodes which can be integrated into wearables. Previous research has been done for the development of textile stimulation electrodes. However, the focus has not been on the electrode construction itself. Therefore, the influence of electrode construction parameters of knitted electrodes as well as of the electrode condition, i.e. wet or dry, on the skin-electrode impedance and on the perceived stimulation comfort were analysed. Further, the application of pressure to the electrode was investigated. It was found that the electrode condition is the most important parameter for the electrode performance as a wet electrode showed a lower impedance and an improved stimulation comfort with a better skin contact. Followed by this, the pressure was the second most important factor, especially for dry electrodes. A higher pressure reduced the skin-electrode impedance and improved the skin contact in dry condition. Nevertheless, dry electrodes with a high applied pressure still performed worse than wet electrodes. Regarding the electrode design, the most important factor was the electrode size. A bigger size reduced the impedance. Nevertheless, for the application in NMES, a smaller electrode size is to be preferred as it improved the stimulation selectivity and thus, a lower NMES level was required to induce a plantarflexion without affecting the stimulation comfort. The other investigated construction parameters (binding, yarn density, shape) only showed minor influences on the electrode performance. Therefore, the possibilities of applying pressure to the electrode to improve the performance of dry textile electrodes should be further investigated.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Being synthesized proteins undergo very early changes in their N-terminal end, since it emerges from the outlet channel of the ribosome. The first modification is the excision of the initiator methionine, provided by a methionine aminopeptidase (MetAP), preceded by its deformylating enzyme peptide deformylase (PDF) in bacteria and in mitochondria and chloroplasts. This process is ubiquitous and essential, and has been described in the kingdom of life. In bacteria, Type 1B PDFs would bind to the ribosome near the end of the outlet tunnel of the nascent peptide via its C-terminal helix α. But recent metagenomic analyzes revealed the unexpected presence of genes encoding putative PDFs in marine viruses. Unexpectedly, all viral PDF have very short C-terminal sequences and lacking the α3 helix. The identification of these atypical PDFs then raises new questions about their possible interaction with ribosome and their biological function. The aim of my thesis was therefore to achieve the complete and integrated characterization of peptide deformylase bacteriophage Vp16T, the sequence is one of the shortest known to date. I showed that the phage Vp16T code an active protein in vivo and in vitro, and can bind to the ribosome despite the absence of the C-terminal helix α. The structure-function characterization Vp16PDF revealed unique features that could then explain its function in the replication of the phage. Thus I have shown that expression in E. coli Vp16PDF modifies the envelope structure, induces accumulation of aggregates and ultimately inhibits bacterial growth. In addition, the study of mutant bacterial strains showed that Vp16PDF specifically interfere with the folding and addressing of membrane proteins. This latter function could help destabilize the membrane of the host and thereby promote release of viral particles

Abstract:

The study investigates how to design a low-cost, versatile event messaging system using SMS. A typical use case is a fire alarm or intrusion detector when equipped with appropriate sensors. With a GPS receiver connected, the actual position is included in the message, allowing for use as theft alarm in e.g. a car or in mobile home.

Abstract:
This work present a case study on the use of the motion analysis laboratory resources (three-dimensional motion capture system, EMG, and force plate) with the purpose of improve the use of surface electrical stimulation to enable the locomotion in paraplegic subjects. Five trials for each of the five patients (thoracic complete spinal cord lesion) using a four channel electrical stimulator was done for synchronously acquisition of: 3D coordinates of 30 markers distributed on the whole body (to evaluate the stride\'s characteristics and three-dimensional measurements of angles of whole-body); EMG signal, on both sides, of triceps brachii long head, pectoralis major, middle deltoideus, extensor carpi radialis; and the vertical component of the ground reaction force. All data were normalized on the right gait cycle. The analysis was done braking the cycle in 11 events related with the swing phase in both sides, because it was focused firstly in the actions related with the swing limb and upper body advance, that represents a critical factor in locomotion aided by electrical stimulation. These events divided the gait cycle in 10 phases, which was used for associate the data evaluated with specifics tasks. The results showed temporal parameters similar to that reported by other authors, specific characteristics of the patient, the mechanism used by the patient for advance the body, and the periods of high activity of the muscles on the cycle.

Sanchez, Perucha Alejandro. "Novel synthesis of tripodal borate ligands." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/6575.

Abstract:
Poly(azolyl)borate ligands have proven to be extremely popular ligands since their introduction by Trofimenko in the late 60´s. The basic skeleton of these ligands involves usually three heterocycle units linked to a central boron apex via the azole nitrogen atoms. These ligands have been applied in diverse research areas such as homogeneous catalysis, materials science and bio-inorganic chemistry. More than 2000 papers, including books and reviews regarding the properties of these compounds, have been published. However, only a few synthetic methods for the preparation of such ligands have been reported and only a few examples of chiral borate-centred ligands are known. This thesis deals with the development of a novel synthetic route to tripodal borate ligands using B(NMe2)3 as the boron source. The mechanism of the reaction of this borane with azole heterocycles has been established by exploring the reactivity of a range of azoles. One of the major features of this new synthetic protocol is that it allows the formation of chiral tripodal ligands where the chiral groups are located either at the forth position at the boron atom or at the azole heterocycles. Coordination studies of the ligands have been undertaken and the metal complexes have been studied by a combination of spectroscopic and X- ray diffraction techniques. Preliminary application of the most representative ligands in the Asymmetric Transfer Hydrogenation (ATH) of prochiral ketones has been undertaken in collaboration with Prof. Dieter Vogt at the Technical University of Eindhoven.

Abstract:
The recent improvements in neural MT (NMT) have driven a shift from statistical MT (SMT) to NMT, which has propelled the use of post-editing (PE) in translation workflows. However, many professional translators state that if the quality of the MT output is not good enough, they delete the remaining segments and translate everything from scratch. The problem is that usual automatic measurements do not always indicate the quality of theMT output, especially with high quality outputs, and there is still no clear correlation between PE effort and productivity scores. We combine quantitative and qualitative methods to study some of the usual automatic metrics used to evaluate the quality of MT output, and compare them to measures of post-editing effort. Then, we study in detail different direct and indirect measures of effort in order to establish a correlation among them. We complement this study with the analysis of translators’ perceptions of the task. Finally, we conduct a fine-grained analysis of MT errors based on postediting corrections and suggest an error-based approach to evaluate raw MT output which includes the use of challenge sets.

Abstract:
The importance of strategy formulation is well known and has consequently received a lot of attention from researchers and managers alike, however, strategy is not of any use if it cannot be implemented successfully. The field of implementation has received more and more attention lately but there is still much left to study and understand. One gap in the area is related to non-managers as executors and how they can contribute to a successful implementation; the purpose in this study is therefore to provide an initial foundation to fill this gap but also to link the factors to a context. To gauge the success of implementation as influenced by the non-management, the smoothness of the implementation was considered, i.e. how frequent the problems were. The first step was therefore to find possible problems affected by the actions of the non-management and then to consider why they occurred. This was done with the help of the theory of strategy aligned behavior. A qualitative study using interviews with managers and employees from two medium-sized manufacturing companies within a regional cluster in southern Sweden was chosen to gain the necessary data in order to reach the purpose of our study. In the analysis of the research, the theory was found to be closely correlated to the empirical findings for the most part. With attention to the type of implementation discussed, the findings could be related to a context of where they occurred and then presented in a 2x2 matrix using measures of competence and company linkages. The findings include, as theory emphasizes; the importance of communication, not only in general but also in specific contexts. Further, an importance of the difference of strategic purpose and strategic effects could amongst other things also be seen.

Abstract:
The use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) for the treatment of swallowing disorders has become increasingly popular, yet little is known about its long-term effects on muscle physiology. This study indirectly assessed suprahyoid muscle physiology using electromyography (EMG) during a jaw-opening task that was completed before training, immediately after training, and two-weeks after training. Comparisons were made in muscle performance between control participants who engaged in effortful swallowing training and participants who received conjunctive NMES during effortful swallow training. All participants completed four weeks of swallowing exercises conducted five days a week (20 sessions) and consisting of 120 swallows each session. Results revealed that participants collectively improved their peak force production following training, but peak force and EMG median frequency did not vary as a function of training method. The observed high variability in median frequency between trials in addition to the documented improvement in function without a measured change in physiology suggests the need to consider alternate electrode placements during EMG or other tools of assessment. These findings suggests that both effortful swallow training and long-term conjunctive NMES with effortful swallowing improves jaw-opening strength of healthy adults, though adding NMES to the treatment was no more effective than training without it. Further research is necessary to determine the effects of long-term NMES training on swallowing physiology in vivo using other indirect measurements, or direct measurements such as muscle biopsy if possible.

Abstract:
In metazoans, early embryonic development relies on gene products, RNAs or proteins, stored in the egg during oogenesis. A previous analysis of oocytes proteome in good and poor quality eggs in sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax showed a correlation between the developmental potential of the egg and a protein of the Nme family. This gene family is well known in mammals, but very little was known in teleosts. The aim of the work was thus to characterize this gene family in teleost fish and to study the contribution of the Nme gene to oocyte developmental competence in zebrafish Danio rerio. Egg quality, also called oocyte developmental competence, can be defined as the ability of an egg to be fertilized and subsequently develop into a normal embryo. Through a phylogenetic analysis, the evolutionary history of the Nme gene family in metazoans was deciphered and, paralogy and orthology relationships demonstrated. This led us to propose a unified gene nomenclature for the gene family that is now well accepted by the scientific community. The expression analysis of all genes of the Nme family led to the identification of several candidate genes that could be implicated in oocyte developmental competence. One specific member, nme10, is maternally‐inherited as a messenger RNA in the egg, and was shown to be implicated in early zebrafish embryonic development by functional experiments. This work not only provides a global characterization of the gene family in teleost fish and a unified gene nomenclature, but also provides some new insight into the understanding of oocyte developmental competence mechanisms

Abstract:
Background: Social enterprises are a kind of organisational hybrid form that has emerged in recent decades. These organisations build their business models with the purpose of both generating profits and making benefits for society. As such, social enterprises face a variety of challenges, which affect performance measurement and decision-making. There is therefore a need to increase the understanding of how these types of organisations work with performance measurement and what factors underpin their decision-making. Aim: The aim of the study is to contribute to an increased understanding of performance measurement and internal decision-making in social enterprises. Methodology: This study has a qualitative research approach based on the constructivist perspective. Through semi-structured interviews with three different companies empirical material has contributed to a nuanced aspect of the studied area. Conclusion: Social enterprises work with performance measurement, but in different ways. Performance measurement and decision-making are predominantly influenced by the social values found within these organisations. However, complexity arises in terms of performance measurement and internal decision-making due to the organisations' hybrid character. For example, it may be difficult for these organisations to fulfill social value creation while taking the financial goals into account.

Full text
Abstract:
The dissertation discusses the application of “Agreement on Subsidy and Countervailing Measures (ASCM)” of WTO to non-market economies (NMEs).  The difficulties of application of ASCM to NMEs mainly lie in two basic questions.  The first is how to separate the subsidy and government involvement in a NME.  The second is how perfect the market has to be in order to qualify as a benchmark to calculate subsidy margins. By focusing on WTO rules and substantial WTO cases, this dissertation analyzes the difficulties in application of ASCM to NMEs from seven perspectives in legal practice.  They are: (1) whether subsidies in public utility enterprises in China are actionable, because such subsidies as upstream subsidies pass benefits to export-oriented enterprises? (2) whether subsidies may continue after privatisation of state-owned companies? (3) whether the loans provided by state-owned banks in China are subsidies? (4) whether it is fair to evaluate the subsidies margins of the land use rights in China by using out-of-country benchmark? (5) tax-incentive subsidies in China; (6) the calculation of a subsidy margin in NMEs; and (7) whether currency manipulation constitutes a subsidy? The dissertation finds that the difficulties of application of ASCM to NMEs are due to a number of reasons.  First, the deficiencies of ASCM cannot explain the application of ASCM to NMEs; second, if applicable to NMEs, there are difficulties in defining a subsidy in NMEs and in calculating a subsidy margin in NMEs; third, the non-unification of assessment of a NME results in unfairness to China which faces different standards of evaluating a NME.  Even though China has been a market economy in some countries’ view, it is difficult to be recognised as a market economy by all countries.

Doeltgen, Sebastian Heinrich. "The Effects of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation of the Submental Muscle Group on the Excitability of Corticobulbar Projections." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Communication Disorders, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/2857.

Full text
Abstract:
Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) has become an increasingly popular rehabilitative treatment approach for swallowing disorders (dysphagia). However, its precise effects on swallowing biomechanics and measures of swallowing neurophysiology are unclear. Clearly defined NMES treatment protocols that have been corroborated by thorough empirical research are lacking. The primary objective of this research programme was therefore to establish optimal NMES treatment parameters for the anterior hyo-mandibular (submental) musculature, a muscle group that is critically involved in the oral and pharyngeal phases of swallowing. Based on previous research, the primary hypothesis was that various NMES treatment protocols would have differential effects of either enhancing or inhibiting the excitability of corticobulbar projections to this muscle group. The research paradigm used to test this hypothesis was an evaluation of MEP amplitude and onset latency, recorded in the functional context of volitional contraction of the submental musculature (VC) and contraction of this muscle group during the pharyngeal phase of volitional swallowing (VPS, volitional pharyngeal swallow). Outcome measures were recorded before and at several time points after each NMES treatment trial. This methodology is similar to, but improved upon, research paradigms previously reported. Changes in corticobulbar excitability in response to various NMES treatment protocols were recorded in a series of experiments. Ten healthy research participants were recruited into a study that evaluated the effects of event-related NMES, whereas 15 healthy research participants were enrolled in a study that investigated the effects of non-event-related NMES. In a third cohort of 35 healthy research participants, task-dependent differences in corticobulbar excitability were evaluated during three conditions of submental muscle contraction: VC, VPS and submental muscle contraction during the pharyngeal phase of reflexive swallowing (RPS, reflexive pharyngeal swallowing). Event-related NMES induced frequency-depended changes in corticobulbar excitability. NMES administered at 80 Hz facilitated MEP amplitude, whereas NMES at 5 Hz and 20 Hz inhibited MEP amplitude. No changes were observed after NMES at 40 Hz. Maximal excitatory or inhibitory changes occurred 60 min post-treatment. Changes in MEP amplitude in response to event-related NMES were only observed when MEPs were recorded during the VC condition, whereas MEPs recorded during the VPS condition remained unaffected. Non-event-related NMES did not affect MEP amplitude in either of the muscle contraction conditions. Similarly, MEP onset latencies remained unchanged across all comparisons. MEPs were detected most consistently during the VC contraction condition. They were less frequently detected and were smaller in amplitude for the VPS condition and they were infrequently detected during pre-activation by RPS. The documented results indicate that event-related NMES has a more substantial impact on MEP amplitude than non-event-related NMES, producing excitatory and inhibitory effects. Comparison of MEPs recorded during VC, VPS and RPS suggests that different neural networks may govern the motor control of submental muscle activation during these tasks. This research programme is the first to investigate the effects of various NMES treatment protocols on the excitability of submental corticobulbar projections. It provides important new information for the use of NMES in clinical rehabilitation practices and our understanding of the neural networks governing swallowing motor control.

Abstract:
Most large cities around the world are undergoing rapid transport sector development to cater for increased urbanization. Subsequently the issues of mobility, access equity, congestion, operational safety and above all environmental sustainability are becoming increasingly crucial in transport planning and policy making. The popular response in addressing these issues has been demand management, through improvement of motorised public transport (MPT) modes (bus, train, tram) and non-motorized transport (NMT) modes (walk, bicycle); improved fuel technology. Relatively little attention has however been given to another readily available and highly sustainable component of the urban transport system, non-motorized public transport (NMPT) such as the pedicab that operates on a commercial basis and serves as an NMT taxi; and has long standing history in many Asian cities; relatively stable in existence in Latin America; and reemerging and expanding in Europe, North America and Australia. Consensus at policy level on the apparent benefits, costs and management approach for NMPT integration has often been a major transport planning problem. Within this context, this research attempts to provide a more complete analysis of the current existence rationale and possible future, or otherwise, of NMPT as a regular public transport system. The analytical process is divided into three major stages. Stage 1 reviews the status and role condition of NMPT as regular public transport on a global scale- in developing cities and developed cities. The review establishes the strong ongoing and future potential role of NMPT in major developing cities. Stage 2 narrows down the status review to a case study city of a developing country in order to facilitate deeper role review and status analysis of the mode. Dhaka, capital city of Bangladesh, has been chosen due to its magnitude of NMPT presence. The review and analysis reveals the multisectoral and dominant role of NMPT in catering for the travel need of Dhaka transport users. The review also indicates ad-hoc, disintegrated policy planning in management of NMPT and the need for a planning framework to facilitate balanced integration between NMPT and MT in future. Stage 3 develops an integrated, multimodal planning framework (IMPF), based on a four-step planning process. This includes defining the purpose and scope of the planning exercise, determining current deficiencies and preferred characteristics for the proposed IMPF, selection of suitable techniques to address the deficiencies and needs of the transport network while laying out the IMPF and finally, development of a delivery plan for the IMPF based on a selected layout technique and integration approach. The output of the exercise is a planning instrument (decision tool) that can be used to assign a road hierarchy in order to allocate appropriate traffic to appropriate network type, particularly to facilitate the operational balance between MT and NMT. The instrument is based on a partial restriction approach of motorised transport (MT) and NMT, structured on the notion of functional hierarchy approach, and distributes/prioritises MT and NMT such that functional needs of the network category is best complemented. The planning instrument based on these processes and principles offers a six-level road hierarchy with a different composition of network-governing attributes and modal priority, for the current Dhaka transport network, in order to facilitate efficient integration of NMT with MT. A case study application of the instrument on a small transport network of Dhaka also demonstrates the utility, flexibility and adoptability of the instrument in logically allocating corridors with particular positions in the road hierarchy paradigm. Although the tool is useful in enabling balanced distribution of NMPT with MT at different network levels, further investigation is required with reference to detailed modal variations, scales and locations of a network to further generalise the framework application.

The task of the Master's thesis has been to develop the MIDlet, which is able to receive data from an external GPS module via Bluetooth. Data are received in the NMEA 0183 format and are processed to extract longitude, latitude, elevation, velocity, number of visible satellites and measurement accuracy of longitude, latitude and elevation. Users have a possibility to save their actual location with a short description to the cell phone’s memory. The MIDlet is also able to save a user defined way-point and navigate to this way-point. The MIDlet itself was developed in the Netbeans IDE with a software development kit (SDK) made by Nokia company. This kit is designed for the Symbian OS s60 3rd edition FP1, which contains a s60 emulator and a s60 MIDlet for a direct compilation in the cell phone. The MIDlet is made of three main parts. The first part shows a longitude, latitude, elevation, velocity, longitude and latitude measurement accuracy, date and time. The second one shows a direction of north, latitude and longitude. The last one shows a direction to the selected way-point and a distance to this location. In theoretic part of the thesis there are described the GPS navigation system, Bluetooth system, geodetic system WGS 84 and programing language Java and its part Java ME.

The aim of my dissertation work was to create an application for pocket PC with operating system Windows Mobile and touch screen, an application that would enable to position the current location of the pocket PC based on the GPS data, on distance measurement between two and more points of which the location is obtained from GPS, and on measurement of territory surface defined by certain number of points obtained from the GPS. The application also enables to display the characteristics of the received GPS signal, information about the number of visible satellites and also information about maximum deviation from positioning. In order to increase the accuracy of the positioning, an averaging function has been implemented. As additional function, a possibility of route location has been created. It measures the passed distance and records some other route characteristics. The application has been successfully tested on pocket PC E-ten M600+ and GPS receiver Navilock but it has been designed with general-purpose and should be compatible with all devices working with operating system Windows Mobile and touch screen. The text section of my dissertation work describes the positioning principle on the basis of satellites with known position, deals with the accuracy of these systems and describes few possibilities how to increase their accuracy. It also discusses the NMEA 0183 Protocol that is used by the majority of GPS modules for communication. The text section also describes several mathematic and cartographic calculations needed for realization of the application.
Abstract: Patients with cervical spinal cord injury have dysfunction of the upper limbs with great loss of motor function. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is considered an important tool in rehabilitation. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the function of patients with tetraplegia in the mimetic task of drinking and compare with the use of NMES and a hybrid system (NMES and dynamic orthosis) through clinical evaluation and kinematic analysis. Fourteen patients with tetraplegia level C4 to C7 and 5 able-bodied volunteers participated in the study. Clinical tests were applied to verify the neurological and functional impairment (AIS and FIM) and the mimetic task of drinking was assessed with kinematic during three situations: free movement, with NMES and with the hybrid system. The kinematic variables used were: movement time, peak velocity ratio, index of curvature, sternum trajectory, wrist-sternum distance and hand opening. We also computed the number of successes to perform the task. The results indicate that patients that are able to perform tenodesis grip have greater functional independence through FIM (p=0.0008). The rate of success of the free movement was 60%, 72.8% with NMES and only 47.6% with the hybrid system. In the kinematic analysis the NMES was not different from the free movement, however, patients performed the task in a longer time, the movement was less smooth and the sternum and wrist trajectories were greater than the control group. The use of the hybrid system modified the pattern of movement of the patients, with an increase of the sternum trajectory and decrease of the smoothness. In conclusion, NMES improved the functional activity of patients with C5 level; on the other hand, the use of the hybrid system does not appear to facilitate the prehension of persons with tetraplegia

Abstract:
Most organizations use an increasing number of domain- or organization-specific words and phrases. A translation process, whether human or automated, must also be able to accurately and efficiently use these specific multilingual terminology collections. However, comparatively little has been done to explore the use of vetted terminology as an input to machine translation (MT) for improved results. In fact, no single established process currently exists to integrate terminology into MT as a general practice, and especially no established process for neural machine translation (NMT) exists to ensure that the translation of individual terms is consistent with an approved terminology collection. The use of tokenization as a method of injecting terminology and of evaluating terminology injection is the focus of this thesis. I use the attention mechanism prevalent in state-of-the-art NMT systems to produce the desired results. Attention vectors play an important part of this method to correctly identify semantic entities and to align the tokens that represent them. My methods presented in this thesis use these attention vectors to align the source tokens in the sentence to be translated with the target tokens in the final translation output. Then, supplied terminology is injected, where these alignments correctly identify semantic entities. My methods demonstrate significant improvement to the state-of-the-art results for NMT using terminology injection.

Abstract:
Escherichia coli is a Gram-negative bacillus, facultative anaerobic and has cosmopolitan distribution. E. coli colonizes the intestine of humans and other endothermic animals immediately after birth, establishing as an important member of the intestinal microbiota. Some strains of E. coli can acquire virulence factors thereby assuming a pathogenic nature, as in the case of extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC). ExPEC strains have the ability to colonize and spread out in different niches of the host, and are divided into UPEC (uropathogenic E. coli), NMEC (newborn meningitis E. coli) and APEC (avian pathogenic E. coli). UPEC, NMEC and APEC share virulence factors. To be able to cause disease, ExPEC strains must produce virulence factors required for adherence, for iron uptake (siderophore) and for resistance to serum and may also contain genes encoding toxins and invasins. Although many virulence factors associated with the pathogenicity of ExPEC strains are known, the regulation of the expression of these factors has not yet been fully elucidated. Fumarate nitrate reductase (FNR) is a global regulatory protein, acting as a sensor of oxygen in Gram- negative bacteria. It has been shown that FNR relates virulence of pathogenic bacteria such as Shigella flexneri and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. The aim of this study was to do an epidemiological analysis and characterization of APEC strains as well as the investigation of regulation of ExPEC’s virulence factors by the global FNR regulator. The results of epidemiological analysis of APEC strains showed the profile of antimicrobial resistance , the prevalence of virulence factors and phylogenetic groups (according to the EcoR group) and the phylogenetic relationship of the isolates, providing an overview of the characterization of avian pathogenic E. coli causing severe cellulitis lesions and systemic infection originating from southern Brazil. In relation to FNR, this study showed the influence of this important regulator of virulence factors that is involved in controlling various stages of establishment of infection by ExPEC strains. Deletion of fnr in UPEC strain CFT 073 reduced motility and expression of type I and type P fimbriae, reduced the expression of hemolysin and control the expression of the pathogenicity island of α -ketoglutarate. Furthermore, fnr mutant strains were unable to invade cells of kidney and bladder, and to colonize the urinary tract of 6 weeks-old mice. FNR was also able to control the stages of infection of NMEC 56. The fnr mutant lost its ability to cause bacteremia, grow in cerebrospinal fluid, cause disease in 5 days old rats. Deletion of fnr in APEC O1 resulted in decreased expression of genes corresponding to the plasmid encoded OmpT protein, type I fimbriae and autotransporter AatA. The main contribution of this work was to demonstrate that FNR regulates expression of important virulence factors of ExPEC strains (UPEC, NMEC and APEC), which is important for the establishment of infection by these strains. In this work, we found that, besides the already known function in regulating genes involved in maintaining an anaerobic environment, FNR also acts in the control of virulenceassociated genes of ExPEC strains, reflecting the ability of these strains to cause disease.

Abstract:

We have 3G on the doorstep but nothing seems to attract ordinary people to this technology. To attract the mass market the telecom industry must show something beyond high bit rates. They must show how ordinary people can take advantage of this new technology. This is done by showing the possibilities of the new technology and by demonstrating applications that it will handle. The telecom industry must convince the telecom operators to invest in this technology and the only thing that matters to them is how much revenue they can make by adopting the upcoming technology.

To convince the operators industry must show how the operators can charge for the new types of applications that will be introduced soon. This is the main reason why this Master's Thesis has been conducted. The purpose of this thesis is to provide a demonstration to Ericsson's 3G lab in Katrineholm in the form of an IP application with a billing solution. This thesis describes the migration from 1G to 3G and examines existing and future billing strategies as well.

The IP application is an application that uses progressive streaming in order to stream multimedia content to a PDA connected to a 3G phone. This application is platform independent because it is placed on leading Web servers, Apache and IIS.

The billing application consists of a number of steps. The first step is logging, which is performed by the Web server on which the streaming application is placed. The second step, processing and billing, is performed in the BGw, which is Ericsson's mediation tool, and the SQL server. The third step is displaying the bill, which is done by using ASP to create an active HTML page.

Abstract:

The first half of the Masters thesis is the result of a survey made on the behalf of the Swedish company KORDAB International AB. The survey includes an overview of different positioning systems and some wireless communication techniques available on the market today. Positioning systems discussed are GPS, DGPS, AGPS and GSM positioning. Mobile Internet connections through mobile phones and communication through radio modems are mentioned and described as examples of wireless communication techniques. Examples of techniques described are HSCSD, GPRS, UMTS and MOBITEX. KORDAB is in the starting blocks to implement a real time positioning feature into their own technical information system GEOSECMA. This survey will give them a base which will help them to decide on which system to use for this feature.

The second half of the thesis includes parts concerning a prototype made to exemplify how KORDAB could implement the real time positioning feature into GEOSECMA. The NMEA 0183 protocol, reference systems and transformation are described to give the necessary background knowledge for the construction and functionality of the prototype. The prototype is a GPS-communicator made as an interface between a GPS-receiver and GEOSECMA and its functionality is also described in this second half of the thesis. Feasible applications are also discussed to show the possibilities real time positioning gives. One application discussed is “Zoom and Auto highlighting”. This application is designed to help user of GEOSECMA to zoom in the map and highlighting the nearest object at current location.
