Abstract:
In the field of process simulation the movement from the sequential modular tools, which are currently the most widely used, to the equation based approach is clear. One of the key advantages of the equation based or simulatneous approach is that using a single model one can solve simulation, optimization, parameter estimation, and optimization problems. This fact avoids modeling rework for each application. However, the simultaneous technology has problems regarding modeling and solving robustness. This work aims to group and develop methods capable of minimize these deficiencies. In order to achieve this goal, available debugging approaches for both steady-state and dynamic system of equations were studied in detail. For the steady-state case well stablished debugging techniques are known. For dynamic models, where the complexity is higher, the analysis and debugging methods are much less mature. This was the source for the major contributions of this work.

Feher, Kamilo. "FQPSK Doubles Spectral Efficiency of Telemetry: Advances and Initial Air to Ground Flight Tests." International Foundation for Telemetering, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/607395.

Full text
Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 26-29, 1998 / Town & Country Resort Hotel and Convention Center, San Diego, California
FQPSK is the abbreviation for Feher Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (FQPSK) patented systems [1]. Digcom, Inc. licensed FQPSK products demonstrated significant spectral saving and RF power efficient robust BER performance advantages. These bit rate agile modems and Non Linearly Amplified (NLA) transceivers, DSP and hardware implementations, and in some instances “software-radios” (20kb/s to more than 100Mb/s) and RF frequency agile (from 150MHz to more than 40GHz) developments and systems have recently been demonstrated and deployed. The spectral efficiency, i.e., data throughput capability of the 1st generation of FQPSK, as demonstrated in initial Advanced Range Telemetry (ARTM) flight tests, approximately doubles while 2nd generation “FQPSK-2” systems have the potential to quadruple the spectral efficiency of operational PCM/FM telemetry systems and be backward compatible with the 1st generation of FQPSK technologies. It is also demonstrated that the spectral efficiency advantage of FQPSK over that of NLA power efficient GMSK, OQPSK and QPSK modulated transceivers is in the 50% to 300% range and that the potential spectral efficiency advantage of FQPSK-2 over GMSK [1] is in the 200% to 500% range. Based on extensive multi-year studies of alternative solutions for spectral and RF power efficient, robust BER performance systems, several commercial US and international organizations, AIAA, CCSDS, NASA, ESA, CCSDS and various programs of the US Department of Defense (DoD) concluded that FQPSK offers the most spectrally efficient high performance-high speed proven technology solutions and recommended FQPSK standardization for several data links. Initial DoD-ARTM Program Office Air-to-Ground L-band and S-band jet airborne telemetry Test and Evaluation (T&E) data, obtained during the summer of 1998 are briefly highlighted. These include simultaneosly tested FQPSK and PCM/FM. In these tests the following ARTM objectives have been demonstrated: (a) FQPSK approximately doubles the spectral efficiency of currently operational PCM/FM; (b) The Data Link Performance of these two systems is comparable. The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) draft modulation standard recommended to the DoD, NASA and CCSDS, was approved by the AIAA [23]. The AIAA standard recommends “that FQPSK modulation be immediately adopted as the interim increment–1 standard.”

Abstract:
Introduction: The use of prescriptive methods in the hearing aids programming has as main objective the application of the recommended amplification to the users, improving the audibility of soft sounds and conversational speech and guaranteeing comfort for loud sounds. Different methods, however, may have different adjustment goals. Considering the modifications in the structures of the external acoustic meatus of the elderly patient, an orientation of the hearing aids selection and adaptation process in this population is necessary, proposing an individualized protocol that take into account the adjustments recommended by the prescription methods. Objective: To comparatively analyze the NAL-NL2 and DSL v5.0a prescriptive methods according to the hearing aids individualized programming for the elderly with hearing impairment. Methodology: The study included 60 elderly individuals with hearing impairment. After signing the Free Informed Consent Form, the participants of the study underwent a meatoscopy, RECD (Real Ear to Coupler Difference) measurement and hearing aids individualized programming with the prescriptive methods NAL-NL2 and DSL v5.0a. Performance verification for each prescription was performed using REAR measurements (Real Ear Aided Response), SII calculation (Speech Intelligibility Index) and HINT (Hearing In Noise Test). Comparative statistical analysis of the data obtained in both situations was performed using the paired t test and the Wilcoxon test. Results: There were statistically significant differences with a better performance of the NAL-NL2 method in the REAR evaluation in low and high frequency bands for medium and loud intensity input sounds, in the high frequency range for low intensity input sounds, and in the speech intelligibility index calculation for soft input sounds. DSL v5.0a presented better results with statistically significant difference in the REAR evaluation in medium frequencies for medium input sounds, in low and medium frequencies for soft input sounds, in the speech intelligibility index calculation for medium and loud input sound, and in the HINT test in silence and noise situations. Conclusions: It was not possible to determine a most suitable method for all evaluated parameters. On the speech perception evaluation there was an important difference having the DSL v5.0a method achieved better results, which offers a satisfactory alternative regarding speech perception in silence and noise conditions and allows the use of this method with the elderly population. The continuity of studies involving the elderly is extremely relevant considering the individual characteristics of this population and the need to establish a specific clinical practice for them. The establishment of different audiological profiles among this population is important to determine the best conduct for each one in the context of hearing aids programming and adaptation, according to all the steps and parameters to be taken into account for a better result.

Andrén, Samuel, and William Bolin. "NLIs over APIs : Evaluating Pattern Matching as a way of processing natural language for a simple API."

Full text
Abstract:
This report explores of the feasibility of using pattern matching for implementing a robust Natural Language Interface (NLI) over a limited Application Programming Interface (API). Because APIs are used to such a great extent today and often in mobile applications, it becomes more important to find simple ways of making them accessible to end users. A very intuitive way to access information via an API is using natural language. Therefore, this study first explores the possibility of building a corpus of the most common phrases used for a particular API. It is then explored how those phrases adhere to patterns, and how these patterns can be used to extract meaning from a phrase. Finally it evaluates an implementation of an NLI using pattern matching system based on the patterns. The result of the building of the corpus shows that although the amount of unique phrases used with our API seems to increase quite steadily, the amount of patterns those phrases follow converges to a constant quickly. This implies that it is possible to use these patterns to create an NLI that is robust enough to query an API effectively. The evaluation of the pattern matching system indicates that this technique can be used to successfully extract information from a phrase if its pattern is known by the system.

Abstract:
Objective: To examine the impact of prescription on predicted speech intelligibility and loudness for children. Design: A between-group comparison of speech intelligibility index (SII) and loudness, based on hearing aids fitted according to NAL-NL1, DSL v4.1, or DSL m[i/o] prescriptions. A within-group comparison of gains prescribed by DSL m[i/o] and NAL-NL2 for children in terms of SII and loudness. Study sample: Participants were 200 children, who were randomly assigned to first hearing-aid fitting with either NAL-NL1, DSL v4.1, or DSL m[i/o]. Audiometric data and hearing-aid data at 3 years of age were used. Results: On average, SII calculated on the basis of hearing-aid gains were higher for DSL than for NAL-NL1 at low input level, equivalent at medium input level, and higher for NAL-NL1 than DSL at high input level. Greater loudness was associated with DSL than with NAL-NL1, across a range of input levels. Comparing NAL-NL2 and DSL m[i/o] target gains revealed higher SII for the latter at low input level. SII was higher for NAL-NL2 than for DSL m[i/o] at medium- and high-input levels despite greater loudness for gains prescribed by DSL m[i/o] than by NAL-NL2. Conclusion: The choice of prescription has minimal effects on speech intelligibility predictions but marked effects on loudness predictions.

Abstract:
Objective: To investigate the predicted threshold shift associated with the use of nonlinear hearing aids fitted to the NAL-NL2 or the DSL m[i/o] prescription for children with the same audiograms. For medium and high input levels, we asked: (1) How does predicted asymptotic threshold shifts (ATS) differ according to the choice of prescription? (2) How does predicted ATS vary with hearing level for gains prescribed by the two prescriptions? Design: A mathematical model consisting of the modified power law combined with equations for predicting temporary threshold shift (Macrae, 1994b) was used to predict ATS. Study sample: Predicted threshold shift were determined for 57 audiograms at medium and high input levels. Results: For the 57 audiograms, DSL m[i/o] gains for high input levels were associated with increased risk relative to NAL-NL2. The variation of ATS with hearing level suggests that NAL-NL2 gains became unsafe when hearing loss > 90 dB HL. The gains prescribed by DSL m[i/o] became unsafe when hearing loss > 80 dB HL at a medium input level, and > 70 dB HL at a high input level. Conclusion: There is a risk of damage to hearing for children using nonlinear amplification. Vigilant checking for threshold shift is recommended.

Abstract:
By 1855, most Maori still lived in a tribal setting, with little official Pakeha interference. This would have been as they expected, exercising their tino rangatiratanga, the chiefly rights guaranteed by the Treaty of Waitangi. However, their world was changing. In an effort to gain Pakeha goods, many Maori had entered the market economy. Most had converted to Christianity. Many could read and write. Some had sold land to accommodate the increasing numbers of Pakeha settlers. These trends gratified the government. It envisaged a New Zealand society dominated by Pakeha, in which European mores would be norm, and where its sovereignty, gained through the Treaty, would be substantive rather than nominal. At this time, the government pursued the policy of iwi kotahi (one people) or "amalgamation". This policy included the aim of elevating Maori socially and economically by extending to them the benefits of European civilisation. It sought too to encourage Maori to give up their "waste" lands for Pakeha settlement and for Maori to accept the rule of English law, and government authority. Ultimately the two races would become one society- a Pakeha-style society. The government used newspapers for disseminating its message to Maori, publishing the bi-lingual Maori Messenger-Te Karere Maori from January 1855 to September 1863. This thesis investigates the governments newspaper, plus other Maori language newspapers appearing within the period, printed by government agents, evangelical Pakeha, the Wesleyan Church, and the rival Maori government, the Kingitanga. The thesis not only looks at the impact of newspapers upon Maori society and politics at this time, but also how the newspapers portrayed the major social and political issues to Maori, including the first Taranaki War, the Kohimarama Conference, and the impending all-out war with the Kingitanga in Waikato. Using the newspapers as its major source, this thesis seeks to show how Maori might have understood the issues, and where possible, to allow them to respond in their own voices. We are fortunate that for almost a year the Kingitanga was able to publish its own views in Te Hokioi, thus allowing the anti-government Maori voice to articulate its stand. However, Maori opinion was hardly unitary. The Pakeha-run Maori language newspapers, through reports, reported speeches, and their corresponence columns, provide another set of Maori opinions, which show a variety of opinions on political and social issues. Many histories of this period focus on the tensions and conflicts between Crown and Maori, thus marginalising pro-government Maori, the waverers, and those who merely wanted to keep trouble from their door. This thesis endeavours to illuminate the whole colonial discourse as it appeared in the Maori language newspapers, providing as wide a range of opinions as possible.

Johnson, Earl E. "An Initial-Fit Comparison of Two Generic Hearing Aid Prescriptive Methods (NAL-NL2 and CAM2) to Individuals Having Mild to Moderately Severe High-Frequency Hearing Loss." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2013. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu-works/1701.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Johnson and Dillon (2011) provided a model-based comparison of current generic hearing aid prescriptive methods for adults with hearing loss based on the attributes of speech intelligibility, loudness, and bandwidth. Purpose: This study compared the National Acoustic Laboratories-Non-linear 2 (NAL-NL2) and Cambridge Method for Loudness Equalization 2-High-Frequency (CAM2) prescriptive methods using adult participants with less high-frequency hearing loss than Johnson and Dillon (2011). Of study interest was quantification of prescribed audibility, speech intelligibility, and loudness. The preferences of participants for either NAL-NL2 or CAM2 and preferred deviations from prescribed settings are also reported. Research Design: Using a single-blind, counter-balanced, randomized design, preference judgments for the prescriptive methods with regard to sound quality of speech and music stimuli were obtained. Preferred gain adjustments from the prescription within the 4-10 kHz frequency range were also obtained from each participant. Speech intelligibility and loudness model calculations were completed on the prescribed and adjusted amplification. Study Sample: Fourteen male Veterans, whose average age was 65 yr and whose hearing sensitivity averaged normal to borderline normal through 1000 Hz sloping to a moderately severe sensorineural loss, served as participants. Data Collection and Analysis: Following a brief listening time (∼10 min), typical of an initial fitting visit, the participants made paired comparison of sound quality between the NAL-NL2 and CAM2 prescriptive settings. Participants were also asked to modify each prescription in the range of 4-10 kHz using an overall gain control and make subsequent comparisons of sound quality preference between prescriptive and adjusted settings. Participant preferences were examined with respect to quantitative analysis of loudness modeling, speech intelligibility modeling, and measured high-frequency bandwidth audibility. Results: Consistent with the lack of difference in predicted speech intelligibility between the two prescriptions, sound quality preferences on the basis of clarity were split across participants while some participants did not have a discernable preference. Considering sound quality judgments of pleasantness, the majority of participants preferred the sound quality of the NAL-NL2 (8 of 14) prescription instead of the CAM2 prescription (2 of 14). Four of the 14 participants showed no preference on the basis of pleasantness for either prescription. Individual subject preferences were supported by loudness modeling that indicated NAL-NL2 was the softer of the two prescriptions and CAM2 was the louder. CAM2 did provide more audibility to the higher frequencies (5-8 kHz) than NAL-NL2. Participants turned the 4-10 kHz gain recommendation of CAM2 lower, on average, by a significant amount of 4 dB when making adjustments while no significant adjustment was made to the initial NAL-NL2 recommendation. Conclusions: NAL-NL2 prescribed gains were more often preferred at the initial fitting by the majority of participating veterans. For those patients with preference for a louder fitting than NAL-NL2, CAM2 is a good alternative. When the participant adjustment from the prescription between 4 and 10 kHz exceeded 4 dB from either NAL-NL2 (2 of 14) or CAM2 (11 of 14), the participants demonstrated a later preference for that adjustment 69% of the time. These findings are viewed as limited evidence that some individuals may have a preference for high-frequency gain that differs from the starting prescription.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This project explores internet memes, pinpointing the utilisation of image macros by online-based basketball fans, as a cultural tool for communication, conversation, critique and debate. More specifically, this study focuses on how basketball fans, through image macros, are engaging with different facets of culture, beyond professional sports. The nature of internet memes allow users to create texts that express the tone of their feelings, and this research contends that the idiosyncratic nature of basketball memes are motivated by non-serious sports-related banter, and yet, can potentially offer legitimate cultural insight by often drawing on popular cultural myths and trends.

"Comparing NAL-NL1 and DSL v5 in Hearing Aids Fit to Children with Severe or Profound Hearing Loss: Goodness of Fit-to-Targets, Impacts on Predicted Loudness and Speech Intelligibility." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2015. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu-works/1706.

Abstract:
Background: An important goal of providing amplification to children with hearing loss is to ensure that hearing aids are adjusted to match targets of prescriptive procedures as closely as possible. The Desired Sensation Level (DSL) v5 and the National Acoustic Laboratories’ prescription for nonlinear hearing aids, version 1 (NAL-NL1) procedures are widely used in fitting hearing aids to children. Little is known about hearing aid fitting outcomes for children with severe or profound hearing loss. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prescribed and measured gain of hearing aids fit according to the NAL-NL1 and the DSL v5 procedure for children with moderately severe to profound hearing loss; and to examine the impact of choice of prescription on predicted speech intelligibility and loudness. Research Design: Participants were fit with Phonak Naida V SP hearing aids according to the NAL-NL1 and DSL v5 procedures. The Speech Intelligibility Index (SII) and estimated loudness were calculated using published models. Study Sample: The sample consisted of 16 children (30 ears) aged between 7 and 17 yr old. Data Collection and Analysis: The measured hearing aid gains were compared with the prescribed gains at 50 (low), 65 (medium), and 80 dB SPL (high) input levels. The goodness of fit-to-targets was quantified by calculating the average root-mean-square (RMS) error of the measured gain compared with prescriptive gain targets for 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz. The significance of difference between prescriptions for hearing aid gains, SII, and loudness was examined by performing analyses of variance. Correlation analyses were used to examine the relationship between measures. Results: The DSL v5 prescribed significantly higher overall gain than the NAL-NL1 procedure for the same audiograms. For low and medium input levels, the hearing aids of all children fit with NAL-NL1 were within 5 dB RMS of prescribed targets, but 33% (10 ears) deviated from the DSL v5 targets by more than 5 dB RMS on average. For high input level, the hearing aid fittings of 60% and 43% of ears deviated by more than 5 dB RMS from targets of NAL-NL1 and DSL v5, respectively. Greater deviations from targets were associated with more severe hearing loss. On average, the SII was higher for DSL v5 than for NAL-NL1 at low input level. No significant difference in SII was found between prescriptions at medium or high input level, despite greater loudness for DSL v5 than for NAL-NL1. Conclusions: Although targets between 0.25 and 2 kHz were well matched for both prescriptions in commercial hearing aids, gain targets at 4 kHz were matched for NAL-NL1 only. Although the two prescriptions differ markedly in estimated loudness, they resulted in comparable predicted speech intelligibility for medium and high input levels.

Abstract:
In this study we gather customer reviews from Prisjakt, a Swedish price comparison site, with the goal to study the relationship between review and rating, known as sentiment analysis. The purpose of the study is to evaluate three different supervised machine learning models on a fine-grained dependent variable representing the review rating. For classification, a binary and multinomial model is used with the one-versus-one strategy implemented in the Support Vector Machine, with a linear kernel, evaluated with F1, accuracy, precision and recall scores. We use Support Vector Regression by approximating the fine-grained variable as continuous, evaluated using MSE. Furthermore, three models are evaluated on a balanced and unbalanced dataset in order to investigate the effects of class imbalance. The results show that the SVR performs better on unbalanced fine-grained data, with the best fine-grained model reaching a MSE 4.12, compared to the balanced SVR (6.84). The binary SVM model reaches an accuracy of 86.37% and weighted F1 macro of 86.36% on the unbalanced data, while the balanced binary SVM model reaches approximately 80% for both measures. The multinomial model shows the worst performance due to the inability to handle class imbalance, despite the implementation of class weights. Furthermore, results from feature engineering shows that SVR benefits marginally from certain regex conversions, and tf-idf weighting shows better performance on the balanced sets compared to the unbalanced sets.

Abstract:
Currently available dependency structures differ significantly in the linguistic criteria they are based on, but are not always adequate for their later use in natural language processing tasks. This dissertation analyses the needs of some of these tasks, in particular temporal and discourse parsing, and suggests task-based dependency structures. A surface-syntax dependency structure is taken as base version, which is then tailored to the needs of the corresponding task by means of head selection, customised syntactic function tagset and collapsed dependencies. The work is grounded on the Spanish corpus AnCora, establishing a surface-syntax base version from its constituent structure level. Two dependency models are created, Temporal and Discourse Dependencies, which take the base version as input and adapt it automatically to the task-based versions. The resulting versions are evaluated by network analysis methods, which confirm the adequacy of these new dependency structures with respect to the specific tasks.

Abstract:
There has recently been a strong drive towards next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy in Monte Carlo event generators. This thesis is concerned with the implementation of a framework for NLO calculations within the matrix element generator AMEGIC++, which forms part of the Monte Carlo event generator Sherpa. An interface is presented for the connection of one-loop matrix elements to Sherpa, conforming with the Binoth Les Houches Accord. Automated Catani-Seymour dipole subtraction is presented for the cases of QCD corrections for processes involving massive final state particles, and the supersymmetric partners of quarks and gluons, namely squarks and gluinos. Similar dipole subtraction techniques are also applied to the case of photonic corrections. An automated implementation of on-shell subtraction, relevant for separating real-emission NLO corrections from leading order production and decay processes, is also presented. With the completion of this work, the event generator Sherpa, when interfaced to suitable one-loop code, is equipped to calculate all necessary components of QCD and electroweak NLO calculations.

In my thesis, I present the methods I use to predict NBA games using matrix factorization. Matrix factorization is popular through the Netflix recommendation problem, but in general, one can apply it to data that are best modeled as the result of pairwise interaction. My thesis contains three parts. First, I explain how I model NBA prediction as a matrix factorization problem and use the basic low-rank matrix factorization approach to discover structure in the data. I also explain some differences between using matrix factorization for NBA prediction versus that in the Netflix recommendation problem. Second, I use probabilistic matrix factorization (PMF) to incorporate the fact that when two teams play each other, the scores will be different each time. Lastly, I incorporate supplementary information such as the date of the game by combining multiple PMF problems using Gaussian process priors. I replace the scalar latent features with functions of this supplementary information to aid with prediction.

Abstract:

At the very core of the National Basketball Association’s labor negotiations between the owners and the players during the 2011 lockout was the league’s argument that its economic structure was broken. Owners contended that the NBA’s soft salary cap system, and the resulting payroll disparity, has put small-market franchises at a talent disadvantage and produced a league of haves and have-nots. To remedy this purported competitive balance problem, the owners demanded severe policy measures to decrease the pay dispersion among teams. However, the players union cautioned that these hardline provisions were merely an attempt to transfer wealth from players to owners. This charge warranted further analysis. Existing literature on this topic is either outdated or insufficient in scope. As such, using regression analysis, this thesis evaluated the league’s argument and determined to what extent the league’s soft salary cap system has contributed to its competitive imbalance. The empirical analysis of this thesis produced several meaningful conclusions. While the NBA has relative imbalance, it does not affect consumer demand for the regular season product. Moreover, while pay dispersion exists, additional salary expenditures only marginally add to a team’s winning percentage. There is no significant relationship between payroll disparity and competitive balance. Finally, with the escalating importance of media rights contracts and the historical appreciation of franchise valuation, the league overstated the financial distress of most of its small-market owners. Overall, the NBA and its owners used deceptive rhetoric and misleading economic policies to decrease player salaries, not to increase competitive balance, in a collusive effort to maximize profits and reassert its diminishing monopsony power in an increasingly star-driven league

Abstract:

In this paper I present an econometric analysis of selection bias in the NBA Draft from 1995-2003. Employing an interval regression maximum likelihood control model that predicts the eventual value of players based on their Draft position, I pinpoint which groups of players consistently over-perform or under-perform relative to their Draft position. Using this analysis I detect bias pertaining to four different groups of players. There was a bias against high school players, especially those taken in the lottery (the top of the first round of the Draft), which may point to risk-averse tendencies of NBA teams. There was also a bias in favor of centers taken in the lottery, who were consistently drafted too high. Black players were selected too low in the first round, and too high in the second round. The final effect deals with foreign entrants to the Draft. From 1995-2001 foreigners were drafted too low; in 2002 and 2003, when more foreigners were selected, they were drafted too high. My paper details the nature of these biases and analyzes their potential causes

Abstract:
A stratified random sample of 144 NBA basketball games was taken over a three-year period, between 2008 and 2011. Models were developed to predict point spread and to estimate the probability of a specific team winning based on various in-game statistics. Statistics significant in the model were field-goal shooting percentage, three-point shooting percentage, free-throw shooting percentage, offensive rebounds, assists, turnovers, and free-throws attempted. Models were verified using exact in-game statistics for a random sample of 50 NBA games taken during the 2011-2012 season with 88-94% accuracy. Three methods were used to estimate in-game statistics of future games so that the models could be used to predict a winner in games played by Team A and Team B. Models using these methods had accuracies of approximately 62%. Seasonal averages for these in-game statistics were used in the model developed to predict the winner of each game for the 2013-2016 NBA Championships.

Abstract:
Assigning categories to text communications is a common task of Natural Language Processing (NLP). In 2018, a new deep learning language repre- sentation model, Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT), was developed which can make inferences from text without task specific architecture. This research investigated whether or not a version of this new model could be used to accurately classify emails as well as, or better than a classical machine learning model such as a Support Vector Machine (SVM). In this thesis project, a BERT model was developed by solely pre- training on the Swedish language (svBERT) and investigated whether it could surpass a multilingual BERT (mBERT) model’s performance on a Swedish email classification task. Specifically, BERT was used in a classification task for customer emails. Fourteen email categories were defined by the client. All emails were in the Swedish language. Three different SVMs and four different BERT models were all created for this task. The best F1 score for the three classical machine learning models (standard or hybrid) and the four deep learn- ing models was determined. The best machine learning model was a hybrid SVM using fastText with an F1 score of 84.33%. The best deep learning model, mPreBERT, achieved an F1 score of 85.16%. These results show that deep learning models can improve upon the accuracy of classical machine learning models and suggest that more extensive pre-training with a Swedish text corpus will markedly improve accuracy.

Abstract:

ELGEAR was a UK government/industry partnership created in 2006 to research electrical technology in aircraft landing gear systems. The project designed, built and ground tested electrical technology for a Landing Gear Extension/Retraction system (LGERS) and Nose Wheel Steering systems (NWS) for a 120 passenger aircraft. One thread of this research, and the topic of the present thesis, was to develop analysis methods and tools to investigate the effects of shimmy. Shimmy is the self excited vibration of a castored wheel assembly. It may be experienced on assemblies such as wheel chairs, shopping trolleys, motor cycles, and it is particularly prevalent on aircraft landing gears. Developed within this report is a generic set of system shimmy requirements to guide future engineers. Several models are developed from first principles, allowing a potential design to be quickly evaluated and damper sizes determined. A detailed Multi-Body Systems model has been created using the software modelling package ADAMS. The model includes a detailed representation of mass and inertia properties, stiffness’s, friction and tyre properties. The report includes a detailed method to determine the tyre parameters compatible with the ADAMS PAC2002 formulation (magic tyre formula). The dynamic model is simulated to investigate the landing gear’s behaviour to each requirement and is a significant enhancement to the models developed using first principles. To explore the influence of higher frequency tyre dynamics, a model incorporating a simplified SWIFT tyre model is generated from first principles. The report concludes with a validation of the methods and tools. Test results are used to validate several aspects of the tyre model, and a comparison between hand derived models and the detailed model provides a thorough check of modelling practices.

Anderson, Scott E. "Does Tanking Work? Evidence from the NBA." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2015. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/1012.

Abstract:
The National Basketball Association (NBA) has recently come under scrutiny from media and fans due to the perception that some franchises are losing games on purpose in an attempt to win a higher draft pick. While researchers have concluded tanking does exist in the NBA, this is the first paper to analyze the strategy’s success in terms of generating increases in future winning percentage or future franchise value. This paper, through panel data regressions controlling for fixed effects for 21 seasons, has found that tanking does have a large impact on future winning percentage. A team that tanks typically sees a significant increase in wins of approximately 9.87 games between the 2nd and 4th year after the team tanked. These results have large implications for the league as the NBA recently began draft reform discussions to reduce the incentive to tank. This paper validates the leagues’ belief that draft reform must occur as tanking can give an unfair advantage in future years.

Unexpected events often occur in the world of sports. In my thesis, I present work that models the NBA. My goal was to build a model of the NBA Machine Learning and other statistical tools in order to better make predictions and quantify unexpected events. In my thesis, I first review other quantitative models of the NBA. Second, I present novel features extracted from NBA play-by-play data that I use in building my predictive models. Third, I propose predictive models that use team-level statistics. In the team models, I show that team strength relations might not be transitive in these models. Fourth, I propose predictive models that use player-level statistics. In these player-level models, I demonstrate that taking the context of a play into account is important in making useful prediction. Finally, I analyze the effectiveness of the different models I created, and propose suggestions for future lines of inquiry.

Basketball is a team game, and an important task for coaches is analyzing the effectiveness of various offensive plays. Currently, teams spend a great deal of time examining video of past games. If teams could automatically classify plays, they could more effectively analyze their own plays and scout their opponents. In this thesis, we develop a methodology to help automatically classify a set of NBA plays using data from the SportVU optical tracking system, which tracks the position of each player and the ball 25 times per second. The problem is made challenging by the variations in how a play is run, the high proportion of possessions where no set play is run, the variance in length of plays, and the difficulty of acquiring a large number of labeled plays. We develop a framework for classifying plays using supervised machine learning. In our approach, we incorporate a novel sliding block algorithm that improves our classifier by accounting for the difference in play lengths. We also use a variant of the traditional one vs. all multi-class SVM. This approach is well suited to distinguish labeled plays from free motion and unlabeled plays. This thesis demonstrates that we can use SportVU data to automatically differentiate plays. We selected a total of six plays to classify, where each play had at least 20 labeled instances. We also added a large selection of plays that were not one of these six and labeled them as Other. Our framework correctly predicted the play with an accuracy of 72.6% and an F-score of .727. We also propose a framework, based on our engineered features, to extend our research to unlabeled plays.

Abstract:
Software companies spend a lot of resources on debugging, a process where previous solutions can help in solving current problems. The bug tickets, containing this information, are often time-consuming to read. To minimize the time spent on debugging and to make sure that the knowledge from prior solutions is kept in the company, an evaluation was made to see if summaries could make this process more efficient. Abstractive and extractive summarization models were tested for this task and fine-tuning of the bert-extractive-summarizer was performed. The model-generated summaries were compared in terms of perceived quality, speed, similarity to each other, and summarization length. The average description summary contained part of the description needed and the found solution was either well documented or did not answer the problem at all. The fine-tuned extractive model and the abstractive model BART provided good conditions for generating summaries containing all the information needed.

Abstract:
Natural language processing (NLP) opens the possibilities for a computer to read, decipher, and interpret human languages to eventually use it in ways that enable yet further understanding of the interaction and communication between the human and the computer. When appropriate data is available, NLP makes it possible to determine not only the sentiment information of a text but also information about the author behind an online post. Previously conducted studies show aspects of NLP potentially going deeper into the subjective information, enabling author classification from text data. This thesis addresses the lack of demographic insights of online user data by studying language use in texts. It compares four popular yet diverse machine learning algorithms for gender and age segmentation. During the project, the age analysis was abandoned due to insufficient data. The online texts were analysed and quantified into 118 parameters based on linguistic differences. Using supervised learning, the researchers succeeded in correctly predicting the gender in 82% of the cases when analysing data from English online users. The training and test data may have some correlations, which is important to notice. Language is complex and, in this case, the more complex methods SVM and Neural networks were performing better than the less complex Naive Bayes and Logistic regression.
