Abstract:
The braconid wasp genus Diolcogaster Ashmead is revised for the Australasian region, and is recorded from New Zealand and New Caledonia for the first time. A key to species is presented, the relationships within the Microgastrinae and among species-groups of the genus, the size of the world fauna, the biology and host relationships, and the distribution of Australasian species are discussed. The connexus-group sensu Nixon is expanded and redefined to include two monotypic, non-Australasian groups (D. ippis Nixon and D. reales Nixon), while the spretus-group sensu Nixon is expanded to include the monotypic group for D. coenonymphae (Watanabe) from Japan. Twenty-six species are recognised from Australasia:D. adiastola, sp. nov., D. alkingara, sp. nov., D. ashmeadi, sp. nov., D. dichromus, sp. nov., D. eclectes (Nixon), D. euterpus (Nixon), D. hadrommatus, sp. nov., D. harrisi, sp. nov., D. iqbali, sp. nov., D. lucindae, sp. nov., D. masoni, sp. nov., D. merata, sp. nov., D. muzaffari, sp. nov., D. naumanni, sp. nov., D. newguineaensis, sp. nov., D. nixoni, sp. nov., D. notopecktos, sp. nov., D. perniciosus(Wilkinson), D. rixosus (Wilkinson), D. robertsi, sp. nov., D. sons (Wilkinson), D. tearae (Wilkinson), D. tropicalus, sp. nov., D. vulpinus (Wilkinson), D. walkerae, sp. nov. and D. yousufi, sp. nov.

Abstract:
This essay delves into the Tet Offensive's far-reaching impact on American journalism, political landscapes during the Vietnam War, and its implications for subsequent eras, primarily examining its direct influence on Lyndon B. Johnson's presidency and Nixons era. Through a comprehensive analysis, this study scrutinizes how the Tet Offensive reshaped journalistic methodologies, altered public perception of distant conflicts, and indirectly influenced political dynamics during the Nixon era. Revealing the Tet Offensive's role in reshaping journalistic practices and blurring realities through selective media portrayal, the analysis underscores its significant contribution to political shifts in the Vietnam War era. While its direct impact on the Nixon era was limited, the aftermath resonated, highlighting enduring media influence on societal narratives. Ultimately, this exploration emphasizes the Tet Offensive's enduring legacy despite its indirect influence on subsequent political epochs, highlighting the sustained power of media in shaping historical narratives.

Spelling, Alexander Richard James. "Anglo-American relations during the Nixon years." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2008. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.489687.

Full text
Abstract:
Perhaps the most enduring element in British foreign policy during the last sixty years has been the 'special relationship' with the US. This thesis concerns the promulgation of relations during the presidency of Richard Nixon (January 1969 - August 1974). The academic literature on the Nixon era has tended to focus on 'big', provocative issues like the Vietnam War or Superpower relations, and the personality traits of the President, such as the abuses of power and the events stemming from the Watergate break-in which precipitated his resignation. However, the Anglo-American relationship and Atlantic Alliance have yet to receive much detailed archival attention. Nixon's presidency coincided with one of the most difficult periods in Anglo- American relations. It was book-ended by the presence of Labour governments led by Harold Wilson, who placed the maintenance and cultivation of Atlantic relations at the forefront of British overseas policy. However, under Edward Heath's Conservative government (June 1970 - February 1974), the overriding priority was taking Britain into the EEC, giving the country a new identity and establishing a genuine partnership with its European neighbours. According to the existing historiography, this approach apparently involved a measured. impartiality towards 'special' political and personal relations with the US, which jarred with Nixon and his National Security Advisor, later Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger. Heath's attitude and philosophy is seen as an aberration amongst post-war British Prime Ministers and one yet to be repeated. Britain's closer association with Europe coincided with growing strains In USEuropean relations due to a combination of interrelated issues, including EEC enlargement, US trade and monetary problems, US-Soviet detente, and the future of NATO. These developments reached a climax during Kissinger's 1973 'Year of Europe' initiative, the October Middle-East War and subsequent energy crisis. AngloAmerican relations are thought to have reached a nadir as Brit'ain sided with its European partners; rather than its US ally. This thesis, however, wiII argue that, except for a few months in 197 I and the period following the Year of Europe initiative, bilateral relations under Heath were for the most part good, particularly at an intergovernmental level. And the return of the Labour Party to pow~r in March 1974 certainly witnessed a concerted effort to restore Anglo-American relations to their previous intimate nature.

Abstract:
The meeting between Richard Nixon and Mao Zedong in 1972 The aim of this dissertation is to provide analysis of the meeting that took place in Beijing in February 1972 between Richard Nixon, as President of the United State of America (USA), and Mao Tse-Tung, the President of the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
First, the analysis will present a brief historical introduction about the first part of the twenty century. In order to highlight the diplomatic issues which caused the postponement of this revolutionary meeting in 1972, this first section will focus on the conclusion of the Second World War and the beginning of the Cold War. Second, the examination of the political and cultural backgrounds of both USA and PRC will clarify the reasons that led to this event.
Third, the study will underline and describe the main feature of the meeting considering both the so- called public opinion point of view and the behind-the- scenes activities. Finally, the study will stress the importance of the meeting as a symbolic event, that is the beginning of a new era in the relationship between USA and PRC.

Abstract:
There are several challenges related to Arctic offshore oil and gas field developments. Among these is the design of pipelines transporting hydrocarbons in the field or to shore. Special considerations must be carried out to take into account the Arctic conditions. One of the most critical concerns for pipelines in shallow waters is the possible damage due to ice ridge gouging. The ice ridge keels can in some areas of the Arctic be as deep as up to 30 meters, ref. Gudmestad et al., (1999), and may damage the pipeline even if that is trenched below the mudline. Laboratory small scale tests executed to establish qualitative figures of the soil and buried pipe behavior below the gouge are reported in this paper. The tests were conducted at 1g and aimed to visualize the effects of gouging on the soil below and the buried pipe segment. A box (115 × 50 × 40 cm) filled with different types of soils (sand and silty sand) was used for the tests. The model ice keel was made of a steel plate hanging from a wooden frame and mounted on top of the box such that only horizontal translation was allowed. For several of the tests, pipe segments were embedded into the soil. The performed tests indicated the presence of subgouge soil deformations and their dependence of several gouge-related parameters. It was observed that the pipes experienced cyclic movements, being first dragged forward-downwards as the model keel approached the pipeline and then re-bounding when the keel passed over. The tests showed that the maximum pipe displacement decreases exponentially with the pipe burial depth. Naturally formed soil mound in front of the keel during gouging showed to influence vertical pipeline displacement. Furthermore, horizontal pipe movements were larger at lower attack angles of the ice keel. The authors are by no means the first to ponder the subject of subgouge soil deformations and pipeline response. Many researchers have reported their studies before; see e.g. Woodworth-Lynas et al. (1996), Nixon et al. (1996), Yang and Poorooshasb (1997), Phillips et al. (2005) and Konuk et al. (2006). The authors are also fully aware of the challenges related to scaled testing of the soil-structure and do not assume the obtained results to be scaled up. Nevertheless, the reader may find some observations to be of interest while evaluating the present (disputed) approach to the problem.

Abstract:
President Nixon replaced President Johnson’s War on Poverty with his War on Drugs in 1971. This new drug war was expanded by President Reagan and others to create mass incarceration. The United States currently has a higher percentage of its citizens incarcerated than any other industrial country. Although Blacks are only 13 percent of the population, they are 40 percent of the incarcerated. The literatures on the causes and effects of mass incarceration are largely distinct, and I combine them to show the effects of mass incarceration on racial integration. Racial prejudice produced mass incarceration, and mass incarceration now retards racial integration.

Mehrling, Perry. Exorbitant privilege? On the rise (and rise) of the global dollar system. Institute for New Economic Thinking Working Paper Series, January 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.36687/inetwp198.

Full text
Abstract:
The global dollar system, though repeatedly reported to be on its last legs—most recently in the Global Financial Crisis of 2008, but most famously in the Nixon devaluation of 1971—has repeatedly instead consolidated and gone on to further geographical expansion (McCauley 2021). The key currency approach to international monetary economics, first put forward by John H. Williams in the aftermath of the 1931 devaluation of sterling, suggests that such resilience arises from the actions of market practitioners who appreciate the convenience of a global means of payment. So the question arises, why has the key currency approach remained a minority view, if not among practicing bankers then certainly among practicing academics? This paper proposes two main reasons—the discredit of monetary optimism during the depression, and the subsequent fateful adoption of Walrasian equilibrium as the frame for academic discussion after WWII.

Roberts, Samuel, Elizabeth Tymkiw, Zachary Ladin, and Greg Shriver. Status and trends of landbird populations in the Northern Colorado Plateau Network: 2022 field season. Edited by Alice Wondrak Biel. National Park Service, June 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2299435.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2022, the University of Delaware, in cooperation with the National Park Service (NPS), completed the seventeenth year of a habitat-based landbird monitoring program in park units of the Northern Colorado Plateau Network (NCPN). This program is designed to provide rigorous population trend data for most diurnal, regularly occurring breeding landbird spe-cies throughout the network. This population information is useful for land managers and supports the National Park Service’s goal of long-term monitoring of biological indicators for network parks. In 2022, university biologists surveyed all 45 survey locations within 11 NPS units. Fifteen transects were located in each of the three habitats of interest: low-elevation riparian, pin-yon-juniper, and sagebrush shrubland. Each location was surveyed once. In addition to the habitat-based surveys, four point counts and an area search were conducted at Pipe Spring National Monument using a modified monitoring design.
