Abstract:
The last remaining population of the Crested Ibis Nipponia nippon in the wild was studied in the Qinling Mountains, Yangxian County, Shaanxi Province, central China, over 24 breeding seasons with particular attention being paid to the nesting behaviour and breeding success. The average clutch size varied significantly among years (2.84 ± 0.77; n = 271), suggesting that food abundance, which was distinct in different areas, was indeed a limiting factor. The mean hatching success was 80.2%, and ranged from 35.7% to 100%. Egg losses were due to three reasons: infertility or the eggs being addled, predation, and human disturbance. Three reasons accounting for chick death were highlighted: shortage of food, predation, and disturbance from local inhabitants. However, the overall breeding success of the Crested Ibis, which averaged 65.6%, was much higher than that of many nidicolous birds and was clearly dependent not only on the stability of pair maintenance but also on human conservation and protection measures. The relatively higher proportion of unsuccessful nests at altitudes between 500–700 m and 701–900 m was linked with the more frequent human activities, predation and lower stability of nest-trees in such areas. The fact that there was no significant variation in the number of successful nests or breeding success across different altitudinal zones demonstrated that, to a large degree, habitats used by the Crested Ibis were now suitable for breeding. The rapid increase in the species' numbers in recent years has been achieved through effective protection measures, including legislation, management of population and habitat, and regular surveys and monitoring. A reintroduction programme has been put into effect, protecting the population from a chance catastrophe such as communicable diseases within its limited range.

Abernethy, Katharine Anne. "Introduction of sika deer (Cervus nippon nippon) to Scotland." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/11564.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the genetic and ecological consequences of the introduction of exotic Japanese sika deer (Cervus nippon nippon Temminck. 1838) to the range of congeneric red deer (Cervus elaphus scoticus L. 1758) in Scotland. Sika were introduced as result of escapes and deliberate releases of park deer around the turn of the century and have since established feral populations in several locations. Most of these populations are achieving high reproductive rates, are currently expanding their range and are hybridising with red deer. These circumstances are of practical concern as red deer have considerable economic importance in Scotland, both for the positive values of stag stalking and leisure use of the hills and through the negative effect of damage to crops and forestry. The situation is also of biological importance as it provides a rare opportunity to assess the genetic structure of a hybrid population after an introduction and to examine the functional significance of hybridisation affecting quantitative traits. Sampling transects were established across two sympatric sika-red population ranges, in Argyll and Invernesshire. Genotypes of 235 deer from nine forests in Argyll and 136 deer from 7 forests in the Great Glen, Invernesshire, were scored at 2 isozyme, 2 microsatellite and 3 mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) marker loci. The species-specific mtDNA markers were generated within this study. Clines in sika allele frequency were found across both transects, with sika frequency reaching 0.8 in Argyll and fixation (1.0) in Invernesshire. Sika are assumed to have at least one and probably several selectively advantaged genes to account for this consistent and rapid increase in frequency. There were significant heterozygote deficits and linkage disequilibria in the centre of the clines, even though samples in the Great Glen were small. MtDNA clines were steeper than nuclear clines, indicating the role of sika or hybrid stags in propagating the advance, but patterns of cytonuclear disequilibrium were not informative about mating pattern, due to the possibility of hybrid immigration and the influence of heterozygote deficit reducing sample sizes. There was no evidence of directionality in the F1 cross, though assortative mating in the backcross could contribute to the linkage disequilibrium observed, as could selection against hybrids.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, I handled extensive Polish-language literature devoted to Japan and the Japanese, from the 16th century to the outbreak of World War II. My goal was to discover how the Poles perceived the Land of the Rising Sun and its inhabitants, to reconstruct what changes these ideas were subject to, and to answer the question regarding what influenced these changes. I looked for Japan in travel reports, geographer texts, encyclopedic notes, newspaper articles. I focused not on what the Poles knew about Japan and its inhabitants, but on what they were imagining about it; this is detailed by themes of "imagination" and "picture" in chapter 1. Thus, said dissertation is the construct of a "model of understanding" of Japan based on various types of texts. The basic questions I tried to find the answer in the dissertation are: How was the image of Japan constructed on the basis of Polish culture? Is it possible to pin point the imagined common axiological space (understood as the similarity of the value system) between Poland and Japan? If and when the culture of Japan was perceived as attractive to a Polish citizen? How Polish texts from the end of the 16th century to the outbreak of the Second World War depicted Japan? Were the imaginations associated with Japan and the Japanese persistent, or did they change dynamically with the passage of time? I tackle theoretical issues in chapter 1, focusing on issues of "imagination" and "image". I try to answer the question about the context in which imagining something is manifested and try to determine what "imagination" is, and what it refers to. The second chapter contains an analysis of selected Polish texts with the characteristics that Poles attributed to themselves. Works by such authors as: Piotr Skarga, Szymon Starowolski, Kajetan Koźmian, Józef Szujski, Jan Ludwik Popławski, Antoni Chłoniewski and Jan Karol Kochanowski are analyzed chronologically, from the earliest to most recent. This study determines which of the character traits attributed to Japanese people were perceived positively and which, due to significant differences, could build a feeling of alienation. The third chapter is an analysis of the image of Japan and the Japanese in Polish encyclopedic texts from 1745 (Nowe Ateny) to 1937 (Ilustrowana encyklopedia powszechna, wydanie drugie). These texts are chronologically analyzed from the earliest to most recent. In the chapter, I take into account the publications in which the entry Japonia appears or there are direct references to Japan. The fourth chapter deals with the image of Japan and the Japanese in the geographical and travel works available in Polish. Texts include such authors as: Władysław Łubieński, Ludwik Sienicki, Karol Wyrwicz, Maurycy Beniowski, Karol Lanckoroński, Eugeniusz Romer, and Wacław Sieroszewski. They are analyzed chronologically. The fourth chapter deals with the image of Japan and the Japanese in the geographical and travel works available in Polish. Texts include such authors as: Władysław Łubieński, Ludwik Sienicki, Karol Wyrwicz, Maurycy Beniowski, Karol Lanckoroński, Eugeniusz Romer, and Wacław Sieroszewski are analyzed chronologically. In the fifth chapter, I deal with press articles about Japan, which appeared in "Tygodnik Ilustrowany" from 1918 to 1939. These include articles related to Japan occasionally, articles about Japanese politics and the economy, as well as works on cultural and sporting issues. The sixth chapter is a review of the critics' and art popularisers' standpoints from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries regarding Japanese art and aesthetics. Within the chapter, I show a gradual change in the perception and imagination of Japanese art by Poles. The chapter is based both on the analysis of press materials from a given period, as well as on compact items such as Julian Fałat's published diaries (Pamiętniki). The problem of imagining Japan and the Japanese by Poles is intriguing because there was no broader development in literature on the subject. While the subject matter connected with the history of international relations between Poland and Japan is well-developed and its scope includes numerous publications, the subject matter related to the image of Japan and the Japanese in Polish culture remains insufficiently exploited. Thus, this work is an attempt to address this issue.

Abstract:
The density, patterns of habitat use and diet of sympatric populations of both native red deer (Cervus elaphus Linnaeus 1758) and introduced Japanese sika deer (Cervus nippon nippon Temminck 1836) in southwest Ireland are described. Habitat and dietary overlap between the two species was substantial and the potential for exploitative competition was investigated. Habitat associations and dietary preferences of both species are poorly known. There are also no published estimates of red and sika densities in this area.

Uzal, Fernandez Antonio. "The interaction of Sika deer (Cervus nippon Temminck 1838) with lowland heath mosaics." Thesis, Bournemouth University, 2010. http://eprints.bournemouth.ac.uk/16241/.

Full text
Abstract:
Sika deer (Cervus nippon) has become an invasive species in many parts of the world. In the south of England large populations appear to be concentrated in landscapes comprising of mosaics of lowland heath, woodlands and grassland. Despite the association between the distribution of Sika deer and that of lowland heath, little is known regarding the extent to which Sika deer utilize lowland heath and their impacts on its plant and animal communities. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the ecological interaction of Sika deer with lowland heath set in a mosaic of other habitats. Specifically, the main three objectives of this thesis were: i) to investigate the different ecological factors affecting the distribution and habitat use by Sika deer; iii) to explore consistency in Sika deer habitat associations as a potential tool to predict the distribution and abundance ofSika deer; iii) to investigate the ecological impacts of the usage of areas of lowland heath by Sika deer upon plant and animal communities oflowland heath. Results showed that Sika deer distribution and habitat use are affected by the availability of habitats, landscape structure and human disturbance at both the landscape and home range scale (i.e. few hundred of hectares and few dozens of hectares respectively). At the landscape scale, Sika deer seemed to use the requirement for safe access to pastures as the main criteria for their habitat selection. At the home range scale, the criteria of choice in the use of resources by Sika deer seemed to be related to a requirement for an appropriate balance of food and cover as the selection of pastures and cover were inversely related to their availability. However, human disturbance, as a form of perceived risk, was also a limiting factor of habitat use at the home range scale. Consistencies in the habitat selection by Sika deer at the landscape scale between areas with similar landscape were detected, which could potentially be used to develop models to predict the distribution and abundance of Sika deer and their subsequent impacts in areas of lowland heath. This study has found a different response of plant and animal communities between dry and wet heath to levels in usage of areas of heath by Sika deer. The existence of a threshold in the local density of Sika deer on areas of heath above which dry lowland heath showed signs of decline in quality has also been identified.

Abstract:

Establishment can be described in many terms. This term is about a company that is establishing on the European market. For many companies, this can appear as a difficult, time- and resource taking process but to advance and develop it is not enough to have a good position on the Swedish market. The company Akzo Nobel Nippon Paint AB, which this composition is about, has taken the risk to leave the home country and explore the unknown. The process was careful and long-termed but also profitable. The employers experience that the company is on a stabile position abroad. They also experience that the knowledge exists and that the involvement is great.

The purpose of this composition is to study Akzo Nobel Nippon Paint AB’s present establishment situation and also to analyse and evaluate which establishment strategies there are for the company to further establish on the extended European market.

Boissier, Caroline. "Evolution de l'industrie japonaise du disque : application au cas du label indépendant "Nippon Columbia"." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018USPCC274.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis deals with the evolution of the indies record label Nippon Columbia through mechanic age, analog age and digital age, looking at more closely about the structuring of this firm and that one of the Japanese music industry, the technological development of music media and the propagation of several kinds of Japanese as well as Western music through Japanese music industry. Its purpose is to understand the lifespan of this record label established more than one hundred years ago. Focusing on the development of this records label, we try to understand the evolution of the Japanese music industry, based on the Western one’s, and step by step set up its own administrative structure, its own advanced technology about musical sets and instruments, and its own sound to raise it up to the second place in the international music record market. This theoretical framework articulates the entanglement of the various actors’ perceptions (most of them are Japanese) from the Japanese music industry. The results show how Nippon Columbia, despite of having been many times confronted with crisis (record, radio, pirating, etc.) but also socio-political crisis (militarism, expansionism in Asia, American occupation, strikes, etc.), has been able to adapt and develop itself in order to be competitive. Moreover, as an indies record label, Nippon Columbia has not focused on one particular kind of music, as many indies record labels generally do. It has gained and popularized new musical genres in Japan as blues, jazz or soundtracks in 1910-1920; rockabilly, rock, folk and pop music in 1950-1960; and since the 1970’s, music from world music, new music and digital sounds

Abstract:
This paper summarizes the results of extensive research on the design loads used for strength assessment of merchant ship structures such as tankers, bulk carriers and container ships. The main aim of the research was to develop practical estimation methods of design loads having rational technical backgrounds acting on primary structural members of tankers, bulk carriers and container ships. During this study: 1) The design sea states that closely resemble the actual sea states which are considered as the most severe for hull structures are proposed. 2) The practical estimation methods of the design sea states are proposed by parametric studies using the results of series calculation of representative merchant ships. 3) The practical estimation methods of design regular waves resulting in the same level of stresses with that induced in irregular waves under the design sea states are proposed. 4) The practical estimation methods of the design loads such as ship motions, accelerations, hull-girder bending moments and hydrodynamic pressures that are induced under design regular waves are briefly introduced. The findings in this study have been summarized and implemented in the new design standards for tanker, bulk carrier and container ship structures. Abstract:
In 1992, the class rule for the America's Cup was changed to the IACC. The Nippon Challenge decided that in order to build a successful challenger to a new class rule, the design would have to rely heavily on the results of a systematic series of tank and wind tunnel testing. The results of these simulations would then be used to build full scale boats which would be tested. The results of the full scale trials would be used to adjust the simulation techniques to fine tune the final design. The data from the model tests were used to develop the input parameters for a Velocity Prediction Program (VPP). The VPP was used to determine the specifications for the design of the first two boats. After full scale testing, the VPP was compared to the results for about 6 months. After this verification and refinement of the VPP, a final boat was built. Finally the results of the race were evaluated and confirm that the basic design development process was correct.
