Paper in a calender nip is subjected to a pressure pulse which reduces its thickness and roughness, thus improving the product quality. Strain recovery after the nip is time-dependent, and some permanent strain remains. The material behaviour is viscoelastic; recovery depends on the pulse magnitude and duration, and does not occur immediately on exiting the nip. The study of root nodule symbiosis between nitrogen-fixing bacteria and leguminous plant species is important because of the ability to supplement fixed nitrogen fertilizers and increase plant growth in poor soils. Our group has isolated a mutant called nip in the model legume Medicago truncatula that is defective in nodule symbiosis. Unfortunately, they are not completely consumed by plants; consequently, this leads to soil pollution and negative effects on aquatic systems. Les réponses locales des revêtements bruts ou traités thermiquement, soumis à des sollicitations thermomécaniques statiques et dynamiques, ont été obtenues par nano- et -microdureté, microtraction, nanorayage et essais tribologiques.
