Abstract:
Four examples of para-nitro substituted 2-(arylimino)pyridine-nickel(II) bromide complexes of general formula, [2-{(2,6-R-4-NO2C6H2)N=CMe}C5H4N]NiBr2, but differentiable by the steric/electronic properties displayed by the ortho-groups [R = i-Pr (Ni1), Et (Ni2), CHPh2 (Ni3), CH(4-FPh)2 (Ni4)], have been prepared in good yield. For comparative purposes, the meta-nitro complex, [2-{(2,6-i-Pr2-3-NO2-4-(4-FPh)2C6H)N=CMe}C5H4N]NiBr2 (Ni5), has also been synthesized. The molecular structures of mononuclear Ni3·xH2O (x = 2, 3) and bromide-bridged dinuclear Ni4 and Ni5 are disclosed. Upon activation with either ethylaluminum dichloride (EtAlCl2) or modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO), all precatalysts displayed good catalytic performance at operating temperatures between 30 °C and 60 °C with higher activities generally seen using EtAlCl2 [up to 4.7 × 106 g PE (mol of Ni)−1 h−1]: Ni2 ~ Ni5 > Ni1 ~ Ni4 > Ni3. In terms of the resultant polyethylene (PE), Ni4/EtAlCl2 formed the highest molecular weight of the series (Mw up to 1.4 × 105 g mol−1) with dispersities (Mw/Mn) ranging from narrow to broad (Mw/Mn range: 2.2–24.4). Moreover, the melting temperatures (Tm) of the polymers generated via EtAlCl2 activation fell in a narrow range, 117.8–126.0 °C, which resembles that seen for industrial-grade linear-low density polyethylene (LLDPE). Indeed, their 13C NMR spectra revealed significant amounts of uniformly distributed long-chain branches (LCBs), while internal vinylene groups constituted the major type of chain unsaturation [vinylene:vinyl = 5.3:1 (EtAlCl2) and 9.9:1 (MMAO)].

Abstract:
Nickel-based and cobalt-based metal alloys are frequently used in dentistry. The introduction of various elements in the alloy changes its characteristics, and a thorough study of each alloy should be completed to determine its appropriate corrosion resistance and biocompatibility in contact with physiological fluids. There are scarce investigations on these widely used dental alloys in Ringer solution, and findings in this research bring new experimental data and information. The present study evaluated and compared the corrosion behavior of six NiCr- and two CoCr-based dental materials in Ringer solution, using the following techniques: potentiostatic polarization curves (chronoamperometry), microstructural analysis, and EIS (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy). The results obtained in this investigation showed that in the NiCr-based specimens Ni4, Ni5, and Ni6 the stability of the passive layer was destroyed after polarization and a development and growth of stable pits was found in the microstructural analysis after electrochemical treatment. In terms of susceptibility to corrosion, two different groups of specimens were derived from this investigation. A first group which included the two CoCr (Co1 and Co2) and three of the six NiCr alloys studied (Ni1, Ni2, and Ni3). A second group with the other NiCr alloys investigated Ni4, Ni5, and Ni6.

Abstract:
A collection of five related 2-(arylimino)pyridines, 2-{(2,6-(CH(C6H4-p-F)2)2-4- RC6H2)N=CMe}C5H4N, each ortho-substituted with 4,4′-difluorobenzhydryl groups but distinct in the electronic properties of the para-R substituent (R = Me L1, Et L2, i-Pr L3, F L4, OCF3 L5), were prepared and combined with (DME)NiBr2 to form their corresponding LNiBr2 complexes, Ni1–Ni5, in high yields. All the complexes were characterized by FT-IR, 19F NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis, while Ni5 was additionally the subject of an X-ray determination, revealing a bromide-bridged dimer. The molecular structure of bis-ligated (L4)2NiBr2 (Ni4’) was also determined, the result of ligand reorganization having occurred during attempted crystallization of Ni4. On activation with either EtAlCl2 or MMAO, Ni1–Ni5 exhibited high catalytic activities (up to 4.28 × 106 g of PE (mol of Ni)−1 h−1 using EtAlCl2) and produced highly branched polyethylene exhibiting low molecular weight (Mw range: 2.50–6.18 kg·mol−1) and narrow dispersity (Mw/Mn range: 2.21–2.90). Notably, it was found that the type of para-R group impacted on catalytic performance with Ni5 > Ni4 > Ni3 > Ni1 > Ni2 for both co-catalysts, underlining the positive influence of electron withdrawing substituents. Analysis of the structural composition of the polyethylene by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy revealed the existence of vinyl-end groups (–CH=CH2) and high levels of internal unsaturation (–CH=CH–) (ratio of vinylene to vinyl, range: 3.1:1–10.3:1) along with various types of branch (Me, Et, Pr, Bu, 1,4-paired Me, 1,6-paired Me and LCBs). Furthermore, reaction temperature was shown to greatly affect the end group type, branching density, molecular weight and in turn the melting points of the resulting polyethylenes.

Abstract:
Ninein (Nin) is a centrosomal protein whose gene is mutated in Seckel syndrome (SCKL, MIM 210600), an inherited recessive disease that results in primordial dwarfism, cognitive deficiencies, and increased sensitivity to genotoxic stress. Nin regulates neural stem cell self-renewal, interkinetic nuclear migration, and microtubule assembly in mammals. Nin is evolutionarily conserved, yet its role in cell division and development has not been investigated in a model organism. Here we characterize the single Nin orthologue in Drosophila. Drosophila Nin localizes to the periphery of the centrosome but not at centriolar structures as in mammals. However, Nin shares the property of its mammalian orthologue of promoting microtubule assembly. In neural and germline stem cells, Nin localizes asymmetrically to the younger (daughter) centrosome, yet it is not required for the asymmetric division of stem cells. In wing epithelia and muscle, Nin localizes to noncentrosomal microtubule-organizing centers. Surprisingly, loss of nin expression from a nin mutant does not significantly affect embryonic and brain development, fertility, or locomotor performance of mutant flies or their survival upon exposure to DNA-damaging agents. Although it is not essential, our data suggest that Nin plays a supportive role in centrosomal and extracentrosomal microtubule organization and asymmetric stem cell division.

Abstract:
Most legumes can engage in symbiosis with N-fixing bacteria called rhizobia. This symbiosis, called nodulation, evolved from the more widespread symbiosis that most land plants form with arbuscular mycorrhiza, which is reflected in a common requirement of certain genes for both these symbioses. One key nodulation gene, Nodule Inception (NIN), has been intensively studied. Mutants in NIN are unable to form nodules, which has made it difficult to identify downstream genes under the control of NIN. The analysis of data from our recent transcriptomics study revealed that some genes with an altered expression of nin during nodulation are upregulated in mycorrhizal roots. In addition, another study reported the decreased colonization of nin roots by arbuscular mycorrhiza. We therefore investigated a role for NIN in mycorrhiza formation. Our time course study, using two nin alleles with differing genetic backgrounds, suggests that that loss of NIN does not affect colonization of Medicago truncatula roots, either in the presence or absence of rhizobia. This, and recent phylogenetic analyses showing that the loss of NIN is correlated with loss of nodulation in the FaFaCuRo clade, but not with the ability to form mycorrhiza, argue against NIN being required for arbuscular mycorrhization in legumes.

Abstract:
In this thesis the NIN artificial neural network structure created by Min Lin et al in 2014 is investigated. This is done by varying stage numbers and layer depth. By doing this ten different networks including the original NIN were created. Testing is carried out on a preprocessed version of the CIFAR10 dataset for these ten networks for a maximum of 150’000 iterations. The results show that the number of stages generally affect NIN performance more than layer depth does. The network with three stages and a layer depth of two performs best at a top accuracy of 87.44%. This is below Min Lin et al’s results. However, this is likely due to overfitting and lack of specifics on their training methods. The thesis concludes that studies of different types of micro-networks in the NIN are required. Studies are also required on deeper NINs with larger datasets to prevent the overfitting observed in the results. Larger datasets could be obtained by data augmentation. Furthermore, the results suggests that less complicated (by less complicated it is meant that the network stages have less depth) NIN implementations are more accurate than deeper ones.

Abstract:
The 75th anniversary of his assassination having passed, this thesis aims to contribute to the recovery of the figure of Andreu Nin, the translator. To achieve this, we set ourselves two objectives: firstly, to present and analyse the complete works of translation by Nin, as well as their reception by critics, to assert the importance of this legacy which, too often, has been relegated to second place by the political dimension of the character; and secondly, to prove that in his decision to translate classical and modern Russian writers into Catalan there was a strong desire to build a work of quality. At the same time, we wish to demonstrate that these versions by Nin heralded a new period; as he knew both languages and literary systems well, the complete Russian works were translated directly into Catalan. The work consists of two parts: the first aims to build as impartial and complete a picture of Nin as possible, and then present the multiplicity of activities that are not strictly political and which he exercised throughout life (he was a teacher, journalist, writer, speaker, lecturer and literary critic); whereas the second part, the core of the research, focuses on the translation work: after having shown the sociocultural context in which Andreu Nin's versions, both literary and political, appeared, the motivations and methodology used by him when translating have been established, and a comprehensive review of all the translations has been offered, based on his own prefaces and on the voices of his critics. Finally, we conducted a comparative analysis of the amendments of the translator and proof-reader which appear in Nin's original typescript of Childhood, Boyhood, Youth, by Tolstoy. All this has enabled us to confirm our original hypothesis: the translating task was not just a chance project in the life of Andreu Nin, the result of adverse circumstances arising from his revolutionary militancy, but the natural activity of an intellectual captivated since childhood by the word and the possessor of modern and well crafted prose, who, moreover, had in-depth knowledge of the language and the reality of the literature he translated. Always moved by a genuine interest to provide the Catalan language with valid models (acceptance) as well as respecting the original (adequacy).

Abstract:

Abstract:
A major work in the fiction of Anais Nin, the collection of "The cities of the interior3, composed of five books (Ladders to fire, Children of the albatross, The four-chambered heart, A spy in the house of love, Seduction of the Minotaur) was published in 1961 and introduces three women who represent the ideas of this writer: Djuna, Lillian and Sabina. The study of "The perception of womanhood" in this work is arranged like a triptych: the first part, "The quintessence of womanhood", unveils the kaleidoscopic silhouettes of these characters which are reflected indefinitely by mirrors and glances in a motley patchwork of physical details and in whirl of objects. It shows the affinities which grow between these women, searching for their essential being, and the natural elements (water, air, fire, earth) and reveals the plasticity of a conquered space adapted to their femininity. In the second part, "woman, a social being", the social side of women attached to the world of the arts and themselves artists (Lillian a pianist, Djuna a dancer and Sabina an actress) is analyzed: especially the relationships of identification and rivalry which the women create between themselves and the ties which unite men and women who, through their education, are faced with a certain code of behaviour. The third part, "A feminine writing" highlights the interferences linking the diary, the interior world, with the novels, the outside world. It shows the stylistic procedure used by Anais Nin to translate the complexity of a consciousness - metaphors, aesthetic references, the playful working of the memory and dreams -. It also underlines the state of conflict felt by the characters, the autobiographical projections of an author, in their desire to abandon a role of a character in order to acquire the status of a person

Watson, Bruce Wallace. "Androgyny and Dominance: Gender Construction in Anaïs Nin's Erotica Series." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42182.

Full text
Abstract:
Anaïs Nin's Diary and her fiction have been lauded by critics for their imagery, Freudian allusions, and creativity. What has not been considered, and is equally important, is her Erotica series, Delta of Venus and Little Birds. These books, her most popular, not only address the issues that she covers in her other works, but also ask questions about how humans are gendered, and consider the degree to which individuals construct their own gender identities. In exploring these questions, she presages not only the theorists who effectively deconstruct her message, but also the gender-bending society which inspired them. Queer theory is particularly effective for considering the sexual messages with which Nin populates her writings. Much as Judith Butler de-emphasizes totalizing gender roles, Nin allows her characters to occupy multiple gender roles. Thus, Nin's female protagonists often take on the sexual positions generally granted to men in American society. Conversely, her male characters are often relegated to less-empowered roles. Although these shifts might not seem particularly impressive in our more liberated society, they were undoubtedly surprising in Nin's day. Moreover, it is impressive that these role-reversing characters were created over forty years before the advent of queer theory, and long before the popular rise of the Feminist movement.
