Abstract:
The elasticity of wheat dough is mainly determined by high-molecular-weight glutenin subunits (HMW-GSs) encoded by Glu-1 loci. In this study, we performed the first comprehensive study on the effects of Glu-B1i-encoded 1Bx17 and 1By18 subunits on dough rheological properties and breadmaking quality by using a pair of Glu-B1 near-isogenic lines (NILs) ZM-NIL1 and ZM-NIL2. Comparative analysis of basic quality parameters, rapid visco analyzer (RVA) and farinograph parameters, and C-cell and loaf parameters showed that ZM-NIL2 containing Glu-B1i-encoded 1Bx17 and 1By18 subunits had better dough rheological properties and breadmaking quality than ZM-NIL1 carrying Glu-B1c-encoded 1Bx7 and 1By9 subunits, including significantly increased protein and gluten content, development time and stability, and loaf volume and score. Particularly, 1Bx17 and 1By18 subunits could significantly enhance bread texture, including significant increase in slice brightness, slice area, circumference, cell contrast, cell extension, and cell quantity. These results demonstrate that 1Bx17 and 1By18 subunits have a significant contribution to dough rheological properties and breadmaking quality.

Abstract:
Genetic improvement of root systems is an efficient approach to improve yield potential and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of crops. QMrl-7B was a major stable quantitative trait locus (QTL) controlling the maximum root length in wheat (Triticum aestivum L). Two types of near isogenic lines (A-NILs with superior and B-NILs with inferior alleles) were used to specify the effects of QMrl-7B on root, grain output and nitrogen-related traits under both low nitrogen (LN) and high nitrogen (HN) environments. Trials in two consecutive growing seasons showed that the root traits, including root length (RL), root area (RA) and root dry weight (RDW), of the A-NILs were higher than those of the B-NILs at seedling stage (SS) before winter, jointing stage (JS), 10 days post anthesis (PA10) and maturity (MS), respectively. Under the LN environment, in particular, all the root traits showed significant differences between the two types of NILs (p < 0.05). In contrast, there were no critical differences in aerial biomass and aerial N accumulation (ANA) between the two types of NILs at SS and JS stages. At PA10 stage, the aerial biomass and ANA of the A-NILs were significantly higher than those of the B-NILs under both LN and HN environments (p < 0.05). At MS stage, the A-NILs also exhibited significantly higher thousand-grain weight (TGW), plot grain yield, harvest index (HI), grain N accumulation (GNA), nitrogen harvest index (NHI) and nitrogen partial factor productivity (NPFP) than the B-NILs under the corresponding environments (p < 0.05). In summary, the QMrl-7B A-NILs manifested larger root systems compared to the B-NILs which is favorable to N uptake and accumulation, and eventually enhanced grain production. This research provides valuable information for genetic improvement of root traits and breeding elite wheat varieties with high yield potential and NPFP.

Abstract:
Near-isogenic lines (NILs) with resistance for scald in seventh generation backcross with ‘Ingrid’ as recurrent parent (RP) were tested with seven differential isolates of Rhynchosporium secalis in Norway and Canada. NILs of ‘Turk’, ‘Brier’, ‘CI 8162’, ‘La Mesita’, ‘Hispont’, ‘Atlas 46’, ‘Modoc’, ‘Hudson’, ‘Abyssinian’, ‘Steudelli’, and ‘CI 2222’ also were evaluated for field reactions. The genetic characterization of the NILs (degree of isogeneity with Ingrid) and with each other was carried out. The molecular marker pattern shows that the backcrossing program has resulted in from 86.3 to 100% RP genome in the NILs, depending on the marker system. On an average, 96% RP genome was found in the NILs. There were certain consistent (pairwise) differences between the NILs and RP on chromosomes 3H and 7H. Both chromosomes are known to contain loci conferring resistance to R. secalis, indicating successful introgression from the donors into the NILs. Approximately two-thirds of the observed RP-NIL polymorphisms were linked to the assumed resistance in the NIL. Based on the marker and phenotypic analyses of the NILs, suggestions for a more appropriate and updated terminology of genes for resistance to R. secalis in barley are made. The proposed changes in nomenclature also indicate the differentials that are available as NILs and those lacking.

Abstract:
Abstract The German words in the title are taken from the first German translation of the Swedish children’s book Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige (Nils Holgersson’s wonderful journey throughout Sweden, Lagerlöf 1906-1907). In this translation Nils is said to land in Germany, which is never the case in the Swedish original. Presumably, the German translator Klaiber added this extra visit to oblige the German readers with a visit of Nils to their own country. Looking at some of the German versions of Nils Holgersson, this article addresses the influence of extratextual factors, i.e., different kind of norms, on the translating and rewriting process.

Abstract:
Photoperiod response (Ppd) genes are very important for adaptation of wheat to different agro-climatic conditions, but also have influence on crop yield. The aim of this study was to compare agronomic traits of 10 Serbian wheat cultivars and 54 NILs of cv. Paragon with single, double and triple doses of Ppd-1 alleles. The results showed that the NILs with introgressed single early Ppd-1 alleles (Set 2), as well as the NILs with introgressed Ppd-1 null alleles, knock-outs and late alleles (Set 4) had significantly longer stems and spikes then Serbian cultivars (Set 1). The lines with introgressed double early Ppd-1 alleles (Set 3) were very similar to the Serbian cultivars. Some promising lines with good potential for breeding programs were identified
