Abstract:
The Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) industry makes a significant contribution to the Nigerian economy; providing substantial revenues to government and sizable employment opportunities at the processing and retailing levels. Previous studies in Nigeria scarcely investigated organisational value creation impact on firm performance particularly in the QSR industry. Despite the increasing popularity of “eating out,” Quick Service Restaurants in Nigeria have shown a negative growth rate, with decline in total income, as it has become increasingly difficult to satisfy modern restaurant customers who seek unique experiences that are more than just consuming food. Hence, this study investigated the effect of value creation on profitability of Quick Service Restaurants in Lagos State, Nigeria. Cross-sectional survey research design was adopted. The total population was 414 owners/managers, accountants of Quick Service Restaurants in Lagos State, Nigeria. A well-structured and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. Cronbach’s Alpha reliability coefficients for the constructs ranged from 0.72 to 0.92. The response rate was 73.2 percent. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings revealed that value creation dimensions had significant effect on profitability(Adj. R2 = 0. 395; F(6,296) = 33.801, p< 0.05).The study concluded that value creation had significant effect on profitability of Quick Service Restaurants in Lagos State, Nigeria. The study recommends that Quick Service Restaurants (QSRs) in Lagos State, Nigeria should continue to deploy their resources effectively and efficiently, identify and satisfy the interests of their key stakeholders in order to enhance profitability.

Abstract:
Abstract Vehicle is an important element of transport; and its financing especially in road transport comes in 3 ways; outright purchase, hire purchase and lease. Of all these three methods of road transport financing, leasing has attracted little attention in Nigeria transport research. This study was carried out to examine the development, types and form, operating characteristics and problems of vehicle lease in Lagos State, Nigeria. Aggregate number of vehicle leasing companies in Nigeria from inception to 2018 was obtained from corporate affairs commission (CAC). Four prominent vehicle leasing companies: Cashlink Leasing Plc (CLP), NIKKY Taurus Ltd (NTL), C & I Leasing (CIL) and SAMTL Leasing Ltd (SLL) were purposively selected for the operating characteristics and challenges of the leasing companies. 298 structured questionnaires were administered to the staffs of the selected companies seeking the types and forms of lease and challenges encountered in the course of operation using stratified and simple random samplings techniques. Vehicle leasing started in Nigeria from 1986 with the likes of pine hill leasing, Cashlink leasing, VT leasing in Lagos. Within 1986 and 2018, it has spread to 23 different urban cities and the number has increased to 297 companies in 2018. Operating and finance leases exist in the industry with majority of 91.6% of the companies practice operating lease. The staff strength and fleet size level of the leasing companies varies overtime but positively significant to their operations. However, poor pricing of lease service, inadequate finance of vehicle, default in payment of rental charges and high cost of maintenance minimize leasing service efficiency and effectiveness. It is recommended that government should provide subvention for vehicles acquisition, face-off of racketing vehicles from cites and legislate policy to regulate operational activities (entry and exit) of the companies.

Abstract:
This Lagos-based study provides an unsupervised grouping of the causes of building collapse in Lagos State Nigeria using purposively obtained data from construction professionals (n=34) in the state. Hierarchical cluster analysis technique and mean scores were used for the analyses. Findings show that the causes of building collapse in Lagos State can be statistically grouped into design and construction-related, policy-related and quality-related causes. The most important causes of building collapse under each of these groups are respectively: poor maintenance culture, change of use of building and use of substandard materials in construction. Government needs to strengthen efforts at monitoring both the design and construction of buildings, starting with fine-tuning building related policies. A holistic approach should be adopted in addressing building material counterfeiting and circulation of substandard construction materials in the study area. Abstract:
Background: Infertility leads to stigmatization, marital instability, and enormous psychological stress. In recent times in Nigeria, there appears to be an upsurge in the number of couples investigated for infertility using hysterosalpingography (HSG). Objective: To observe the trend of HSG findings at a foremost tertiary hospital in Africa. Methods: Using an inclusion criterion of patients who had an initial ultrasound scan prior to HSG as noted from radiologists’ reports, a sample size of 623 radiographs concluded between April 2014 to April 2019 was consecutively enlisted from a population of 2,624 cases. Patients’ demographic information were extracted from their request cards and radiologists’ reports. Results: Patients were aged 22 – 54 (mean: 36.30 ± 6.00) years. Hysterosalpingography findings indicated that secondary infertility was more prevalent and with fibroid (n = 198, 31.80 %) and congenital anomalies (n = 24, 3.80 %) were the most and least prevalent abnormality, respectively. Conclusions: Although the ages of patients presenting for HSG investigations at the centre had increased, secondary infertility remained the more prevalent type, but with minimal drop in percentage.

Abstract:
AbstractHighway development in Nigeria pioneered other modes of transport including rail, air, water and pipeline. It serves as the most efficient means of distributing agricultural products, locally-made products and natural resources. As a result of this, highways requires adequate planning and periodic maintenance for effective and efficient performance. This study examined traffic situation and capacity utilisation of highways in Ogun State, Nigeria with particular reference to Lagos-Ibadan, Lagos-Abeokuta and Sagamu-Benin Highways. Manual traffic count method was employed for the estimation of traffic volume and flow pattern. The count took 12 hours a day for three consecutive days (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday) of a week. The traffic data gathered were analyzed and interpreted using descriptive and inferential techniques to determine Average Daily Traffic Volume (ADTV), flow situation and capacity utilization rate of each highway through thorough observation of inbound and outbound traffic. Findings revealed significant variation in traffic flow situation observed on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday of selected highways. Findings also revealed that Lagos-Ibadan Highway (2,085 vehicles/hour/lane) is well utilized while Abeokuta-Lagos and Sagamu-Benin Highways are underutilized with 820 and 1,184 vehicles/hour/lane respectively. Improvement measures and strategies to address traffic flow situation including route development and utilisation issues on the highways were proposed.

Abstract:
Purpose This study examines the level of awareness about high blood pressure and the role of librarians in the dissemination of health information among residents in Lagos State, Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach The population comprised high blood pressure patients at the University of Lagos Teaching Hospital in Lagos State, Nigeria. A sample of 900 patients was taken from the existing population of high blood pressure patients comprising male and female aged 15-55 years and above. Data for the study were collected through the use of a structured questionnaire. Few in-depth interviews were also conducted to enrich the data from the structured questionnaire. Some descriptive statistical techniques were used to analyze the data obtained from the structured questionnaire, while the data obtained from the in-depth interviews were subjected to content analysis. Findings The findings revealed that awareness about high blood pressure was generally low among the study population. It was also discovered that the librarians working in the medical and public libraries in Lagos State provided information services to members of the communities. However, the librarians affirmed that their role in the dissemination of information to the public was inadequate. Research limitations/implications The study was limited to the high blood pressure patients at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, while the patients attending other hospitals in Lagos State were not included as a result of time factor and lack of funding for the research. The views of the excluded category of patients on the level of awareness of high blood pressure may vary. Originality/value Good health is the bedrock of human development, and awareness is the first step in the battle against the scourge of ill-health. Recognizing the need for increased level of awareness and the value of disseminating useful information are vital to patients in the management of high blood pressure.

Abstract:
Pollen allergy is an abnormal response of the immune system to certain pollen grains and these reactions are gradually on the increase all around the world. The need for consistent and accurate data on aero-pollen density as well as the meteorological conditions under which they are prevalent is imperative for appropriate management of allergic conditions in hypersensitive persons. Therefore, to identify the ‘culprit’ pollen related to allergy cases in Lagos, two locations, Ipaja and Ikeja were sampled. Aero-samplers were harvested weekly from February 2016 to July 2016. Acetolysis was done on the samples collected and meteorological data from Nigerian Meteorological Agency and clinical data from Adefemi Medical Center, Ipaja were assessed against pollen counts. The total pollen count of 2,048 was recorded for Ipaja while Ikeja had 820 with main taxa of Amaranthaceae, Poaceae and Euphorbiaceae. Weekly pollen counts were highest in weeks 8 and 10(April) at Ipaja and Ikeja respectively and lowest in weeks 22 and 24(June) at Ipaja and Ikeja respectively. The pollen counts at Ipaja correlated positively with temperature and from the medical records, there was a positive correlation (p<0.05, r=0.166 and r=0.44) between pollen density at both locations with cold and catarrh. Fungal allergens could have caused the spike in pollinosis in the wetter weeks (12 -19). The quality of the clinical data could also be a suspect which reinforces the need for more accurate and standard recording of clinical conditions across hospitals in Nigeria. This is the first record of weekly aerobiological data in Nigeria.

Abstract:
The study interrogates health information use by resident doctors in Lagos State University Teaching hospital (LASUTH), Lagos State. Health information has been variously described as the “foundation” for better health, as the “glue” holding the health systems together and as the “oil” keeping the health systems running. It is important for making the right clinical decisions and enhancing professionalism. A survey research design was adopted by the study and the enumeration technique was used to cover all 115 resident doctors that constituted the population. Out of the 115 questionnaire copies administered, 94 copies were returned for data analysis, making the response rate to be 81.7%. The data collected were analyzed using frequency counts and percentages. Findings revealed that the majority of resident doctors in LASUTH have access and use, to a large extent, health information for clinical decision-making. It is, however, recommended that to improve on health information sharing, workshops and seminars on health information should be regularly conducted for resident doctors in LASUTH. This, expectedly, will expose them to new health information trends that will enhance their clinical experience. Abstract:
The decline of human capital and educationattainment in Nigeria, such as skill, values, qualifications and productivity capacity reflects in the rise in unemployment, poverty, robbery, kidnapping, ritual practices for quick money amongst others. These related social ills constitute a hydraheaded monster that plagues Nigerians today. This scenario is a serious source of concern and worry. The study assessed human capital development and education as a strategy for sustainable income among university undergraduates in Edo and Lagos states, Nigeria. The study determined the different types of human capital education that incorporates lifelong skills in the universities of Benin and Lagos, Nigeria, and the strategies for sustainable income among university undergraduates in Nigeria. The study was carried out in Universities of Benin and Lagos, Nigeria. The study was guided by three research questions and two hypotheses. Related literatures were reviewed. A sample of two hundred (241) respondents from Edo and Lagos state, were selected randomly. The data was analysed using mean, standard deviation and the independent test to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The result showed that there is no significant difference between Human capital traits posed by university of Benin and Lagos undergraduates that are taught lifelong skills courses and those that not taught. Also, teaching aligned with the needs in work place during industrial attachment. Base on the findings, among others, is that the Nigerian government should raise education fund for universities to equip their workshops for effective teaching. The study concluded that university education should include human capital development courses to enhance lifelong skills and productivity capacity in the work place.

Abstract:
The study examined effects of manpower planning and development in Lagos state civil service performance. Lagos state civil service is the greatest asset of the state in its quest for socio-economic development. The primary question that was explored is whether the nature of manpower planning and development curriculum in Lagos state civil service has effect on the service performance and the attainment of state objective. The study relied on primary and secondary data, and multiple stage sampling technique was used to select the sample population. The data collected was presented in frequency bar chart and simple percentage. Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMC) statistical tool was used to test the hypotheses. Findings of the study show that the nature of manpower planning and development curriculum has a positive effect on the Lagos state civil performance. It also reveals that the manpower planning and development has a positive effect on the attainment of Lagos state objective. To achieve better performance in the service, it should among others, improve on the current manpower planning strategy and continue to update its manpower development curriculum in line with the global best practices. Given the pivotal role that technology plays in the 21st century, the service should avail itself the windows of opportunities that information technology provides in its drive to enhance employees’ skills, knowledge and abilities that will invariably improve the service performance. Yet, the service should imbibe the prescripts of New PublicManagement theory (NPM), and that goals and targets should be defined and measurable as indicators of organizational performance.

Abstract:
This study examined the various alternative sources put in place in the public universities in Lagos State in financing the institutions. The study adopted descriptive research design. The population for the study was all the universities in Lagos State. The sample for this study comprised two public universities in Lagos state. A self-design questionnaire titled “Alternative sources of financing university inventory” (ASFUI) was used to gather information required from the budgetary section of the universities. The study revealed that the Federal University was able to employ more alternative sources of financing than the State University. However, none of the universities fully employed the available alternative sources. It also revealed that tuition was not an alternative source at undergraduate level in the Federal university. It was recommended that the universities should employ more alternative sources which are yet to be employed and the State University specifically should be involved in some income generated activities which are commercial in nature and not currently employed. Tuition should be introduced in the Federal Universities at undergraduate level with consideration to students from poor parents.

In Lagos State, Nigeria, pollutant emissions were monitored across the state to detect any significant change which may cause harm to human health and the environment at large. In this research, three theoretical distributions, Weibull, lognormal, and gamma distributions, were examined on the carbon monoxide observations to determine the best fit. The characteristics of the pollutant observation were established and the probabilities of exceeding the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (FEPA) acceptable limits have been successfully predicted. Increase in the use of vehicles and increase in the establishment of industries have been found not to contribute significantly to the high level of carbon monoxide concentration in Lagos State for the period studied.

Abstract:
Solid waste is a major disutility of urbanization in Nigeria as rapid urbanization combined with industrialization in Nigerian cities have created greater concentration of wastes than what these cities’ systems can possibly assimilate. One state where this problem is most severe is Lagos State. The size of the state, coupled with the other factors like population trend, topography, concentration of industries act as potential threat to the limited carrying capacity of the environment. Therefore, if the present annual growth rate in population of 6-8% is to be sustained, there should be an urgent need to de-link economic activities from environmental degradation via an efficient waste management strategy that focuses on waste minimization among others. This research analyzed the impact of user charges, recycling incentive (price of recyclables) and weather variables on both residential and commercial sectors. In addition, income and population density variables were included for the household model using the OLS and ARIMA model. The author found that user charges negatively impacts on waste quantities. Weather variable (temperature) positively influenced wastes quantities. The author recommends the use of variable user charges set appropriately and the encouragement of recycling in the state.

Abstract:
AbstractThe study investigated the cultural features of construction companies in Lagos state and determined the organisational culture profile of the construction companies in the study area, with a view to providing information that could enhance the organisational performance of Nigeria construction firms. Primary data were sourced through the administration of 196 structured questionnaires to 98 construction companies (i.e., two questionnaires per company) represented by their construction professionals and administrative staff. The information elicited from the returned 140 questionnaires (71% return rate) included features of organisational culture and dominant characteristic element of organisational culture profile of the construction companies. Data collected for this study were analysed using percentages, factor analysis and mean score (MS). The result showed a dominant organisational cultural feature of strategic direction explaining 17.73% variance in respondent’s perception. However, communication (9.66%), adaptability (8.43%) and employee involvement (6.88%) were also relevant. The organisational culture profile showed a predominant market culture (MC) with focus on production and goal accomplishment (MS = 3.62), a hierarchy culture (HC) of a coordinator, organiser and efficiency expert (MS = 3.60) and an ad hoc culture with strategic emphasis on dynamics and readiness (MS = 3.56). The family type of culture is undermined within the companies (MS = 3.47). The study concluded that strategic direction being a MC feature corroborates a predominant MC revealed by assessing organisational culture of construction companies in Lagos state, Nigeria.

Abstract:
One of the challenges of Lagos State is efficient and cost-effective solid waste management. This paper focuses on progress made in waste management operations in the State. An assessment to know how waste generation, collection, transportation and disposal have put demands on state resources, and its physical infrastructure was carried out. The state generates about 12,000 metric tons of waste daily (0.72kg/person/day). Due to limited budgetary allocation, the state government instituted the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to perform supervisory roles and charged with the implementation, advocacy, monitoring and enforcement of waste management policies. As part of its roles, the agency enlisted Private Service Providers (PSP) for the purpose of appropriate billing of waste services. LAWMA centrally collects revenue and remits agreed portion of 60% of waste charges to individual PSP accounts in accordance to estimated waste collected. The state is focused on resource recovery programs such as composting, land filling and pelletizing of plastics and nylons. The implications (environmental, economic, social and financial) for managing solid waste gives credence to the renewal campaign for resource conservation and environmental sustainability. Thus, the 4 Rs of waste management – Reduction, Reuse, Recovery and Recycling are being demonstrated through establishment of compost production plant, championing of Waste-To-Wealth Initiatives and Renewable Energy (RE).

Abstract:
In order to make Lagos state a clean and habitable environment, successive democratic governments since 1999 have introduced ‘megacity policy’. The most important of government initiatives of the megacity agenda are constructions of all major and access roads, provision of beautiful surroundings and landscapes and the building of the Lagoon city in the sand-filled areas along the Atlantic Ocean and Lagos lagoon. Government official have consistently claimed that Lagos Megacity project isto provide infrastructure and make the city habitable for low, medium and high income workers and the elites. However big projects were mainly provided in selected areas in the Lagos Island, mainland and other areas where the elites and the rich live. Shanty towns, ghettoes and slums where most Lagos workers live have not really beneffited. This paper examines the challenge which increasing povertyposes to the megacity project. Descriptive method is employed to assess poverty among the Lagos workers. Residential areas were randomly selected and official records were used. Worker’s income is assessed based on prevailing inflation and average earned wages, 672 households’ headsin VIP areas and 1537 in ghettoes, slums and shanty towns were interviewed for the study for two days in week for 24 months between 2015-2017. Affordability of foods, housing, access roads, hospital, schools, sewage system, toilet facilities, waste and refuse disposal and others were used formulate questions directed to measure the wellbeing of individual households of Lagos workers. Findings reveal that governments Lagos megacity projects have led to the provisions of many infrastructures and social services such as roads, schools, hospitals, housing and beautiful landscapes in few areas in the main city, but government efforts to provide the same in all identified ghettoes, slums and shanty towns that dotted many areas in the suburbs where most of the low income workers live have not been quite effective. The paper concludes that megacity projects have not really improved the wellbeing of the Lagos workers. The paper recommends that government should implement megacity policy to improve the wellbeing of large section of its increasing population most especially poor workers in order to reduce the present and future ugly effect of poverty in Lagos state.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to re-examine the framework for determining property market maturity by including the economic characteristics of a country in the measure.Design/methodology/approachThe examination was done in Lagos property market, which was stratified into Mainland and Island markets. A total of 181 estate surveying and valuation firms and 87 property development companies, as represented by top-level managers, participated in the survey. Data were collected on their perception of property market maturity attributes that included market openness, presence of professionals, level of transparency and state of the economy, among others. The data were analyzed using mean rating and mean deviation.FindingsThe result showed that “diversity of real estate products and forms” was ranked highly and had reached a mature stage in Lagos Mainland, Island and the aggregated Lagos market. Contrarily, the state of the economy was still at immature stage in Lagos and its sub-markets. Overall, the results showed that the Lagos property market was emerging and that the inclusion of economic features in the maturity framework reduced the level of maturity of the market when compared with previous studies.Practical implicationsThe study implied that the assessment of the state of economy of a country, as part of the attributes for measuring property market maturity, will impact on the result and should be taken into consideration.Originality/valueThe study adds to the previous studies on property market maturity by assessing the impact of the economic characteristics of a country on the measure.

ABSTRACT: This study investigated the relationship between staff training programmes and employees’ productivity in Lagos State Ministry of Education in Nigeria. Four hypotheses were formulated and tested at 5% significance level to guide the study. The descriptive survey research design, which is “ex-post facto” in nature was adopted; and a total of 200 randomly selected subjects participated in the study. Data were analyzed using Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient and Independent t-test. Findings from the study revealed a significantly moderate relationship between staff training programmes and employees’ productivity. Also, there is significant difference in employees’ productivity based on marital status and gender. Staff training programmes are, thus, “sine qua non” towards employees’ productivity in Lagos State Ministry of Education. Based on the findings, we recommend among others that the government intensify efforts on staff training programmes, married people, who appear to be more committed, should be recruited into Lagos State Ministry of Education; and gender bias in favour of men should not be emphasized in employees’ recruitment.KEY WORD: Staff Training; Employees; Productivity; Marital Status; Gender. About the Authors: Maruff Akinwale Oladejo, Ph.D. and Muhideen Adewale Oladejo, M.Ed. are the Lecturers at the Department of Educational Administration UNILAG (University of Lagos) in Akoka, Nigeria. Abstract:
Lagos state is the commercial and financial capital of Nigeria. It is a coastal city with a population of 12 million and covers 2000 square kilometers. The road network extends over 2700 km with a vehicle density of 740 vehicles per kilometer. It consumes over 85% of petroleum products imported into the country. It has no rail or sea mass transit system and all movements of people and goods are by road. This has created a major traffic Management challenge and government intervention is the establishment of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority( LASTMA). To understand the structure, strength, and weaknesses of the authority, the enabling law and accident statistics, were obtained from the Authority, the Nigerian Police, and the Federal Road Safety Commission. Questionnaires were administered to drivers unions and the general public. The results were analyzed and it was discovered that conflicts across agencies, corruption and high handedness exist. It was also established that the authority has to a great extent succeeded in improving orderliness on Lagos roads. LASTMA needs to pursue an aggressive public enlightenment to change driver’s behaviors.

Abstract:
Buildings worldwide are one of the most essential assets of humans, and they serve as a major contributor to the sustainable development of any nation. The consequences of building collapse are colossal ranging from loss of lives, damage to properties and its attendant socio-economic implications, etc. This menace appears to be worst-off in developing countries like Nigeria where capacity to manage disaster is lacking. Recent incidence of seismic actions in hitherto geographically aseismic zone, has led to prediction of earthquake occurrence in the nearest future. This research attempts to compute the seismic hazard of buildings in Lagos State, a densely populated area of Southern Nigeria. Based on known seismic ground motion for South-Western Nigeria, a model is created that estimates the casualty and built area that would be affected by earthquakes with different seismic intensities. MATLAB software using Monte Carlo simulation to draw random data samples of built area, construction quality, probability of failure and occupancy level is used for the computational analysis. The result showed that existing construction quality is poor portending a high degree of damage during moderate intensity earthquake. A significant risk reduction is achievable for both the impending collapse and severe damage performance levels if the existing construction quality is improved.

Abstract:
Beach seine fisheries in Badagry, Lagos State, Nigeria, was studied. Focused group discussion, observation and interview sessions were used to collect data on gear description, catch composition, socio-economic characteristics, livelihood parameters, fish species, productivity and other fishing inputs. Surveyed beach seine net had mean length of 301.76 m +/- 17.82 m while the depth of the wing and at the centre measured 2.80 m +/- 0.14 m and 4.02 m +/- 0.22 m, respectively. The mean of the frequency of operation for the fishing companies was highest in April (22.20 +/- 1.49) and the lowest in September (13.20 +/- 0.86). The moon fish (Carangidae), croaker fish (Scianidae) and spadefish (Eppiphidae) families represented more than half of the daily landings. The mean monthly catch recorded for the companies ranged from minimum of 644.50 kg +/- 98.72 kg to maximum of 754.03 kg +/- 123.523 kg from April to September with the market price for fish (in Nigerian Naira N) that ranged from N3.18 to N15.91 per basin and recorded highest biannual mean income of N780.72 +/- N67.00. 20% of the respondents were aged between 21 and 30 years followed by 37% of those aged between 31 to 40 years while 29% were aged between 41 to 50 years and 12% were between 51 to 60 years old. Only 2% were above 61 years of age which shows the years of experience of the fisher folks. Of the total 50 respondents, 94% were found to be males while 6% were females. Larger proportions of the fisher folks (36%) were single, 56% were married and 8% were divorced. The distribution of level of education shows that about 21% of the fishermen, who were involved in beach seine fisheries, had no formal education, while 40% had primary education, 34% had secondary education and only 5% had tertiary education. The coastal artisanal fishery is still able to absorb a little more effort and capacity to enable production meet up with the potential yield. It is however essential in the national interest that there should be a clear understanding of fishing capacity development on capital, labour and fish resources, both in the short and long term.

Abstract:
Lagos is the largest producer of municipal solid waste in Nigeria, yet it is the smallest of Nigeria’s 36 states with the highest projected population, highest level of urbanization and it houses Nigeria’s largest chief port, and principal economic and cultural centres. Out of the total waste generated, only about 73 percent actually got to the final disposal site. There is a possibility of inefficient and ineffective municipal solid waste management system in place which can damage the ecosystem services, contaminate ground and surface water, creates greenhouse gas emissions, increase disease transmission, damages ecosystem services and discourages tourism and other businesses. To this end, this study analysed the efficiency and effectiveness of solid waste services and; the efficiency and effectiveness of solid waste services in Lagos State using primary data and conducting statistical tests. The study found a general agreement on what constitutes efficient and effective solid waste services. However, the study concluded that the waste management system in Lagos State is inefficient, ineffective and therefore; unsustainable. The study therefore recommends among others the urgent need to re-organize the waste management institutions for effective and efficient performance. This requiressubstantial planning ability, appropriate equipment and continuous managerial optimization of vehicles and workers productivity, efficient vehicle routing, better designed vehicles, managerial incentives, faster vehicle repairs, vehicle standardization.

Abstract:
Satellite-derived Digital Elevation Models (DEM) are fast replacing the classical method of elevation data acquisition by ground survey methods. The availability of free and easily accessible DEMs is no doubt of great significance and importance, and a valuable resource in the quest to accurately model the earth's surface topography. However, the suitability of Digital Elevation Models in simulating the topography of the earth at micro, local and regional scales is still an active area of research. The accuracy of Digital Elevation Models vary from one location to another. As such, it is important to conduct local and regional assessments to inform the global user community on the relative performance of these DEMs. This study evaluates the accuracy of the 30-metre Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer Global Digital Elevation Models version 2, the 1-kilometre GTOPO30, the 90-metre Shuttle Radar Topography Mission v4 and the 1-kilometre Shuttle Radar Topography Missionv2.1 Digital Elevation Models by validating with highly accurate GPS check-points over Lagos, Nigeria. With a Root Mean Square Error of 3.75m, the results show that Shuttle Radar Topography Mission v4 has the highest vertical accuracy followed by Shuttle Radar Topography Mission v2.1 (Root Mean Square Error: 5.73m), Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (Root Mean Square Error: 21.70m), and GTOPO30 which shows the lowest vertical accuracy (Root Mean Square Error: 29.41m). By conducting the accuracy assessment of these products in Lagos, this study informs efforts directed at the exploitation of these Digital Elevation Models for topographic mapping and other scientific and environmental application.
