Abstract:
Nicolò Tani’s “Avertimenti sopra le regole toscane”: tradition and grammarography This contribution aims to provide a historical and grammatical overview of Nicolò Tani's Avertimenti sopra le regole Toscane, in order to identify, in addition to the features conforming to the tradition of early sixteenth-century grammars, the peculiarities, originalities and innovations of the work. For the first time this grammar is analyzed organically both as a whole and in its parts. Starting, in fact, from the limited biographical information of Nicolò Tani, we move on to the analysis of the textual tradition of the work, to the author's intentions, to the dedication he drafted by proposing a complete overview of the grammar. In specifically analyzing the linguistic aspects, we focus on the parts of speech, verbal morphology and adherence to the terminology of Latin grammar, making a constant comparison with the solutions adopted by grammarians coeval with the author, in order to highlight the elements of continuity and the innovations proposed by Tani. The comparison with the other works is also carried out with regard to considerations on authorial quotations. Concerning the latter, a perusal has been carried out, identifying within the grammar the passages taken from the literary canon, which are then filed in order to determine how many quotations there are for each work, from which compositions or proses the greatest number of exemplifications have been taken, and the ways through which Nicolò Tani quotes authors.

The text is based on the correspondence preserved in the estates of prof. Otakar Sommer and prof. Miroslav Boháček stored in the Archives of the Czech Academy of Sciences (Prague). Based on these letters, it turns out that the traditional views on non-communication between professors at Charles University and the German University in Prague are not entirely true. There were professional and collegial contacts between the Czech and German Romanists, which in the case of O. Sommer and prof. Mariano San Nicolò also turned out to friendship, even between their families. Letters written by M. San Nicolò also partially show the background of his departure from Prague and his pedagogical work in Munich. The aim of the article is to point out the fact that correspondence between the academics of that time is an important source of knowledge about the scientific community of interwar Czechoslovakia.

Abstract:
Abstract My article focuses on the Franco-Italian poem Attila Flagellum Dei, composed by Nicolò da Càsola, an Italian notary, in the second half of the XIV century for the Estensi in Ferrara, in order to celebrate the heroic origins of the family: actually, it is the first encomiastic poem dedicated to them, before the major works by Boiardo and Ariosto. The poem is witnessed by a single manuscript (divided into two tomes), supposedly in the hand of the author himself. My study provides a new biographic profile of Nicolò and his family, also through an overview of some archival documents from the Archivio di Stato in Bologna. The article also presents a brief summary of the narration, and outlines the principal characters, the positive ones (Forest and Gilius in particular) as well as the negative ones (Attila), seen as prototypes alluding to other fictional or historical figures (Forest = Hector of Troy; Attila = the entire Visconti’s family). At last, my paper offers a sample (the proem) of the critical and commented edition I am working at. The text is preceded by an analysis that illustrates its peculiar linguistic features, with a particular regard on the rhymes: indeed, far from being representative of the generic class of Franco-italian works composed by Italo-Romance authors, the poem Attila Flagellum Dei shows a combination of hypercharacterized French and Italo-Romance dialects of Northern Italy.

AbstractIn 1558, the Venetian patrician Nicolò Zen publishedDello scoprimento, a text that suggested that his Venetian ancestors had made landfall in the Americas before Columbus. Generations of scholars have pored over Zen’s text and accompanying map with the hopes of determining whether or not this voyage took place. Zen’s text, however, cannot be classified as either history or fiction; like many other early modern travel accounts, it was a combination of both. Shifting the focus about what is significant from the text’s truthfulness to its tactics, from the historicity of the voyage to the mechanics of the composition, reveals a series of fascinating textual strategies surrounding the European production of knowledge about the New World. Specifically, Zen followed well-established patterns for European travel writing, playing with quotation, pastiche, and temporality in order to depict his fellow Venetians as experts on the Americas and as viable contestants in the race to New World empire.

Renaissance politician and philosopher Nicolò Vito di Gozze treated music subjects in three among his works: Dialogo della bellezza (Dialogue on Beauty, 1581), Governo della famiglia (The Governing of the Family, 1589) and Dello stato delle republiche (On the State of the Republics, 1591). Although in these works Gozze mentioned music in a number of shorter passages, it is possible to perceive three larger topics he discussed in more detail: musical instruments, musico-theoretical ideas and the functions and effects of music. Gozze’s thoughts on music had been mostly influenced by ancient Greek thinkers, Plato and Aristotle, thus Gozze pointed out the importance of role of music in society, especially within the educational system and the process of learning.

AbstractThe treatise On Formative Power (Venice, 1506) of Ferrara's emblematic medical humanist, Nicolò Leoniceno (1428-1524), is the one of the first embryological monographs of the Renaissance. It shows, at the same time, the continuity of medieval Arabo-Latin tradition and the new elements brought by Renaissance medical humanism, namely through the use of the ancient Greek commentators of Aristotle like Simplicius. Thus this treatise stands at the crossroad of these two currents. The present study analyses the range of Leoniceno's philosophical discussion, determines its exact sources and brings to light premises for the early modern development of the concept of formative force, which will end up in the theory of "plastic nature" at the heart of the Scientific Revolution.

Video mapping is defined as a particular form of augmented reality capable of transforming any surface, flat or irregular, into a dynamic surface capable of enriching human sensory perception. Video mapping projections can become a medium to link the historical facts and the location by means of the valorisation of the monument and narration of its story through images and sounds. This paper aims to show how video mapping, beyond its purely technological aspect, can be linked to cultural heritage and represents a tool capable of becoming a mediator of culture, tradition, and legends. It is used to pass on and tell the legend of the foundation of the present Cathedral of Maria Santissima della Madia in Monopoli through the animation of the pictorial cycle by Nicolò Maria Signorile preserved in the church.

Abstract:
In February 1382 Franceschina Grimani took as her husband Giacobello Trevisan, son of Stefano. A few months later, in May, another young noble girl, Franceschina Querini, married Bernardo Giustinian, son of the prosperous nobleman Orsato Giustinian. Despite the similarities shared by these two Venetian brides, one important factor separated them. Franceschina Grimani's father was Nicolò Grimani of Santa Sofia parish. According to the estimo of 1379, Nicolò's real wealth totaled approximately 30,000 ducats, making him one of the wealthiest men in Venice. In contrast, Franceschina Querini's father Marco possessed only 2,000 ducats in real wealth according to the same estimo. Despite the huge disparity between the economic fortunes of these two fathers of the bride, both of their daughters brought equal dowries of 1,000 ducats to their marriages.

Abstract:
Abstract. Digital surveying and representation tools are widely used for the virtual reconstruction of historic buildings that have vanished or have been transformed. When changes or destructions occurred after the first half of the XIX century, the reconstruction process can be based on photographic images, if available. Photos provide an effective support for the reconstruction of lost buildings, especially when drawings or previous surveys are not available. The 3D reconstruction from archive images has become a relevant topic in almost recent years. In 2013 Migliari et al. proposed a method that allows the reconstruction of 3D models from a single image using perspective restitution. In those years computer engineers developed digital tools that supported inner and outer orientation of archive images. In the years from 2017 to 2019 several studies focused on the reconstruction of lost buildings with photogrammetric traditional and SfM techniques. In this study an un-assisted process is proposed for the reconstruction of a lost buildings from a single image: perspective restitution developed with digital representation tools allowed the retrieval of inner and outer orientation of archive photos and the reconstruction of the case study, a church that no longer exist. Outer orientation and scaling were provided by the lidar survey of those buildings that are still in place. Finally, a motion tracking commercial software has been tested for the contextualization of the 3D reconstruction model.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Numerous links exist between manuscripts that belonged to the Paduan philosopher Nicola Leonico Tomeo and the editions published by Aldus Manutius and his heirs. This article investigates the case of MS Paris, BNF, Greek 2764. As is demonstrated by discreet markings made with dry point, MS 2764 provided the copy-text for the edition of the Orphic Lithica published by Gian Francesco d’Asola in 1517. It was also used for the first edition of Colluthus, prepared by Aldus Manutius in 1504. Contrary to what might be thought on the basis of both marginal branches and a dedication to a woman named Fosca, MS 2764 was not copied by Tomeo. Tomeo was only the owner and annotator of the MS. It was, in fact, written by a copyist belonging to Tomeo’s circle who imitated his master’s marginalia in order to pay tribute to him. Three copies of the Orphic Lithica produced around that time by Zacharias Callierges enable us to identify the scribe’s circle. Further analysis of MS 2764 shows that the marginalia so far ascribed to Tomeo were in fact quite common in his circle. Two appendices to the article aim at offering a glimpse of Tomeo’s rich library. The first one lists and describes 12 manuscripts (now in the BnF) that were copied by Tomeo. It also tries to identify three different writing styles and to differentiate the folios that were copied by Tomeo himself from those that were written by collaborators using a very similar style of writing. The second appendix lists 16 manuscripts (also preserved in the BnF) that were annotated by Tomeo.

Abstract:
We present an OWL 2 ontology, called SaintGall, representing the Saint Gall plan, one of the most ancient documents arrived intact to us. The Saint Gall plan describes the ideal model of a Benedictine monastic complex that inspired the design of many European monasteries. The structural, functional, and architectural specification of an ideal Benedectine monastery is modeled by the SaintGall ontology, which allows one to analyse and model the Monastery architectural type. This work started with the purpose of relating Catania’s San Nicolò l’Arena Benedectine Monastery with the abstract notion of Benedectine monastery, in the ambit of an ontological model based on the renovation works carried out by the architect Giancarlo De Carlo and developed by the same authors. The SaintGall ontology opens a research path aiming at comparing different monastic architectures that can be useful in any intervention of refurbishment or design for a monastery.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the book The President, by Julio Costa (governor of the province of Buenos Aires in the 1890s), published simultaneously with the electoral reform of 1912. It is argued that the relevance of this text lies in three axes. First, it shows key topics of the public debate of that moment: representative government, political parties, secret and mandatory voting. Second, it ponders universal suffrage in the name of preserving traditions and the defense of freedom. Thus, it offers indications of possible crossings between conservatism, liberalism and democracy in Argentina of 1910s. Finally, the book displays a severe criticism of Roque Sáenz Peña inspired by The Prince, the famous text by Nicolò Machiavelli. From this point of view, it integrates a broader sequence, so far little explored: a political reflection grounded in the Florentine author about the vicissitudes of Argentine public life of the first decades of the twentieth century.

Abstract:
A large part of the literary production of humanist physicians consists of Latin translations of Greek medical texts. They considered these translations the first and necessary approach to ancient Greek medicine, which in turn was viewed as having ensured scientific and therapeutical progress against the barbarisms of dominant Arabic medical culture. In a passage from a work entitledDe Plinii et plurium aliorum medicorum in medicina erroribus, the humanist physician Nicolò Leoniceno (1428–1524), who taught for sixty years at the University of Ferrara, attacks Avicenna's doctrine as chaotic, obscure, and dangerous to life. He then presents his own medical program, which is first of all based on translations: “Nos sane ad hanc amovendam atque extirpandam et nostrae aetatis hominibus lucem aliquam veritatis aperiendam, partim librorum Galeni medicorum principis translationibus, partim in eosdem commentationibus, die noctuque laboramus.” Leoniceno was actually a prolific translator of Galen.

The cardinal nephew, Flavio Chigi (1631–1693), is known for his very special collection of natural as well as artistic objects from abroad. A portrait of the man, who was in charge of the Chigi-collection, the connoisseur Nicolò Simonelli, shows him among the key pieces staged on a table, while underneath pieces of antique sculpture are stored in a strange way. The antagonism of the Priapus statue on display on the one hand and the pieces of antique statues placed underneath the table on the other bring monstrous aspects of the antique to light while the beau-idéal often identified with antique sculpture seems to be no longer a matter of question. The arrangement of these objects allows moreover a reflection on different modes of generation/creation known at the time. The paper emphasizes the aesthetic aspects of the vis plastica of nature.

Abstract:
Abstract Recent studies on the functions performed by natural and mathematical sciences in Renaissance courts have shown how closely and extensively the domains of medicine, astrology and politics interacted with each other. The dedicatory letters to Cardinal and Prince-Bishop Bernardo Cles printed in works of medicine, astronomy and natural philosophy by scholars like Marco Antonio Rozoni (1524), Sebastian Münster (1527), Luca Gaurico (1531) Pietro Antonio Mattioli (1533) and Ludovico Nogarola (1536) reveal how much attention Ferdinand I’s Supreme Chancellor, a prelate and politician of unquestioned authority and power, devoted to such influential domains of natural science. In particular, they suggest that Bernardo was not unfavorable to a view of natural knowledge inspired by the anti-astrological skepticism of Giovanni Pico della Mirandola. What is more, his intellectual proximity to learned physicians working in the wake of Nicolò Leoniceno’s medical humanism lends credit to the image of a patron, and a ruler, who was oriented to rely preferably on natural knowledge grounded in repeatable sensorial experience.

Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to develop a bank-oriented rating approach, tailored by incorporating the various heterogeneity dimensions characterizing financial institutions, named “Bank-Tailored Integrated Rating” (BTIR). BTIR is able to catch the financial cycle, including the pandemic crisis, and the ongoing change in banking normative from a microeconomic perspective, and it is inherently coherent with the challenging frontier of forecasting tail risk in financial markets in similar ways as in De Nicolò and Lucchetta (2017), although their approach is macroeconomic) since it considers the downside risk in the theoretical framework. The method employed was an innovative integrated rating (IR) statistical and econometrical panel pre-selection analysis that takes into account the characteristics of risk and the greater heterogeneity of the banks. The result is a challenge rating procedure delivering forward-looking preselection requested by the new International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS-9). The future direction is extremely promising given the increase in idiosyncratic and systemic risks in financial markets.
