Holland, Joanne. "Narrating Margaret Nicholson: a character study in fact and fiction." Thesis, McGill University, 2009. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=32373.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the historical and fictional character of Margaret Nicholson (1745-1828), a labouring woman who became notorious for her failed attempt to assassinate King George III in August 1786. After a quick trial, Nicholson was diagnosed as insane and spent the rest of her life in Bedlam. Her story continued to interest readers: she was the subject of multiple biographical chapbooks, the supposed author of a collection of radical poetry actually written by Percy Bysshe Shelley, and a source of mingled terror and fascination for both eighteenth- and nineteenth-century readers. The thesis evaluates how Nicholson's story has undergone fictionalization from her time to the present, and examines how the boundaries between fact and fiction in the case have become so nebulous that history itself has become fictionalized.

Full text
Abstract:
The chemical oxygen-iodine laser (COIL) has several important military and industrial applications. The concern of this work is do develop a partial differential equation model describing optical behavior in the COIL. Optical behavior of the COIL has traditionally been investigated via a ray tracing method. Photons are represented as discrete particles, and their behavior is described by the geometry of the system. We develop an optical model wherein photons have a wave description. In order to construct the mathematical model, we utilize the theory of paraxial wave optics and Gaussian beams. Doing so allows us to incorporate physical effects such as diffusion/diffraction and refraction into the model. After describing the optical model, we present numerical methods for obtaining approximate solutions to the model in the cases of one and two transverse directions. Results are presented illustrating the efficacy of the numerical methods.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to examine the nineteenth-century art collections and architectural style of the original buildings at the University of Sydney in order to demonstrate ways in which visual material may be employed to shape public perception of an institution. I shall argue that the architectural style of the original university buildings was specifically chosen with particular aims which extended beyond the mere establishment of a tertiary institution for the colony. I will also argue that the style shaped the character of the institution, contributed to the maintenance of law and order in the colony, linked the colony more firmly than hitherto to the mother country and provided social benefits for the founders of the institution. The instant history and character thus imposed upon the institution was reinforced by the assembly of a portrait collection in emulation of other collections of portraits at leading institutions of the colony and the mother country, including the Oxbridge universities. Once the building proclaimed that the institution was comparable with the great universities of the world, the subjects of the portraits at the university could be placed in the class of founders of a great historical institution, thus at the same time enhancing the reputation of the institution and the individuals. The construction of an indentity through visual images was extended by the benefactions of Sir Charles Nicholson, the principal donor of works of art to the university in the nineteenth century. I argue that his intentions in relation to his collections were didactic but were also concerned with the entrenchment of the imperial hegemony over the colony, and again with the enhancement of his personal repuatation. This analysis shows how, by a complex of personal ambition and aspiration for the colony, the style of the buildings and the art collections formed were used to establish the colony as civilized and the new university as a bastion of English tradition.

Full text
Abstract:
The research focuses on the study of the collection of 71 Greek and Latin inscriptions kept at the Chau Chak Wing Museum of the University of Sydney (New South Wales, Australia), the most important of the southern hemisphere. The inscriptions were almost all collected by Sir Charles Nicholson, one of the founders of the first Australian University, the University of Sydney, during two travels he made through Italy (Rome and Naples) in 1857 and 1858, with the declared intention to acquire a collection of antiquities which would be donated in 1860 to the newborn University in order to institute an academic Museum: the Nicholson Museum. The main aim of this research is to analyse, according to the parameters of contemporary Epigraphy, the entire collection and to update its last published catalogue, which dates back to 1948. At the same time, it focuses on the reconstruction of the collection's history, from the study of the inscriptions' context of provenance to the analysis of their life cycle in the Nicholson Museum, today transferred into the new Chau Chak Wing Museum. This dissertation is the result of a year of preparatory study and 3 months of on-field research at Sydney in Spring 2022, as part of an Erasmus+ ICM mobility.

The waste of raw materials is one of the main bottlenecks in the wood industry and much of the waste generated in the processing of wood is discarded in inappropriate places, causing damage to the environment. The production of small objects from wood residues is a socio-economic way to add value to these wastes and for this, wood residues of Bignoniaceae and Fabaceae species have been used, which are often not chemically studied because of the difficulties inherent to the wood acquisition. Considering the availability of wood residues through the INCT Project – Madeiras da Amazônia, this study evaluated the wood residue of Tabebuia serratifolia (Bignoniaceae), Acacia mangium and Dipteryx polyphylla (Fabaceae). Fractionation of methanolic extract of T. serratifolia allowed the isolation and identification of naphthoquinones dehydro-α-lapachone, dehydro-iso-α-lapachone and α-lapachone, in addition to lignans paulownin and cycloolivil. The studies on the A. mangium specie allowed the identification of steroids sitosterol, stigmasterol and a spinasterol derivative, 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-cinnamic acid, methylparaben, 4- hydroxybenzaldehyde and flavonoid 3,4',7,8-tetrahydroxyflavone. With fractionation of the methanolic extract of D. polyphylla it was possible to isolate four isoflavans, with 3', 7-dihydroxy-4'-methoxy-isoflavan and 3',8-dihyd roxy-4',7-dimethoxy-isoflavan unprecedented in literature. Considering the biological potential of the isolated compounds classes, it was performed the antifungal test in the strains of Cryptococcus neoformans (VN1PCN6) and Candida albicans (ATCC 36232) and the naphthoquinone dehydro -iso-α-lapachone distinguished among the tested substances.

McArthur, Richardson Sar Eve. "Writing the contemporary : the banal and the infra-ordinary in the works of Jean-Philippe Toussaint and Nicholson Baker." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2008. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1446060/.

Full text
Abstract:
Fhis comparative study of Nicholson Baker and Jean-Philippe Toussaint addresses the importance of the everyday in contemporary literature and theory. I examine the contemporary in the contexts of knowledge, identity, politics, media, history, urban space, and psychology. What emerges is a consensus of pessimism concerning the contemporary subject in an increasingly homogenised, narcissistic, a-historical, information-saturated yet unmappable world. There are dissenting voices, however, some of which designate the everyday as a realm that escapes hegemonic culture. I undertake an exploration of contemporary literature, which exhibits a preoccupation both with pessimistic subject predicaments and with the everyday, in particular an approach to the latter which is akin to Perec's 'infra-ordinary. My subsequent analysis of Toussaint and Baker yields some contradictions: the infra-ordinary seems both conceptually close to, and yet antithetical to the banal, itself integral to the everyday. To resolve this tension, a deeper understanding of the banal is required, and I make use of Sami-Air to this end. Sami-Ali's psychoanalytic theory reveals the banal to be a critical distillation of the pessimistic subject predicaments I initially identified. The infra-ordinary, however, while close to the banal, ultimately opposes it. I argue that the infra-ordinary and the banal are thus opposing subsets of the everyday, optimistic and pessimistic construals of the same reality. I then question whether for Toussaint and Baker, the presence of the banal, in both form and content, renders their own texts banal. The answer is no: while sometimes employing a banal aesthetic, and negotiating and drawing on the banal, ultimately their texts counter and oppose it, through the use of the infra-ordinary and by other means. I conclude that Toussaint and Baker are quintessentially contemporary, both in their negotiation of the banal and the infra-ordinary, and in their development of a post-postmodern, or 'neo-realist' contemporary form.

Abstract:
During 1984 I carried out an Internship in Materials Conservation under the supervision of Mrs. Patricia Johnson, the Conservator of the Nicholson Museum of Antiquities, the University of Sydney. My area of specialization was in the conservation of artifacts. The majority of artifacts examined and treated during the Internship were from archaeological excavations in the Middle East, at the site of Pella, in Jordan. The site of Pella has produced artifacts from a wide chronological range ; Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Hellenistic (Greek), Roman, and Arabic historical periods. A selection of these artifacts has been granted to the University of Sydney by the Jordanian government, and constitute the present Pella Collection. Most of the materials are inorganic, i.e. ceramics, metals, glass, and stone, although bone and ivory artifacts, as well as skeletal material, form a part of the collection. Upon an initial examination of the collection, conservation problems were identified and a program of conservation work for the collection was formulated. Priority treatment was given to the metals in the collection, particularly to the small bronzes which were found to be suffering from "bronze disease" (active corrosion), to ceramics needed for study and display, and to glass with unstable surfaces. Improvements in storage conditions for the Pella Collection, particularly in the packing of small finds and the storage of metals, were also given a high priority. Taken altogether, the Pella Collection has proved to be a wellbalanced collection, covering almost every period of Kiddle Eastern Archaeology, and containing artifacts representative of most types of materials and of ancient technology. Planned as a research and teaching collection for the students of the Department of Archaeology, the University of Sydney, it also proved to be an excellent teaching collection for a student of materials conservation. The following, therefore, is a report on my Internship in Archaeological Conservation, and includes a description of the institution which sponsored the Internship, a description of both the program of work and the program of instruction for the Internship, detailed descriptions of all conservation work and other activities which were undertaken as part of the: Internship, and a final evaluation of the Internship.

Shaw, Martyn. "The 'Nicholsonian effect' : aspects of 'tone' in early nineteenth-century flute performance practice in England, with particular reference to the work of Charles Nicholson (1795-1837)." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2014. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/4923/.

Full text
Abstract:
Charles Nicholson (1795-1837) was one of the most important figures in the evolution of the flute. His influence on the design of the Boehm flute is widely acknowledged. However, the contribution he made as a catalyst for developments in flute performance practice in early nineteenth-century England, is not. Such was Nicholson’s reputation for variety of tone in his playing, that the term ‘Nicholsonian effect’ was coined. This research examines the tone of the flute, and uniquely places it within the context of the interrelationship between performance, pedagogy and flute-design in Nicholson’s work. Tone manipulation emerges as a crucial feature of the style with particular importance attached to three things: tone-colour, ‘vibration’ and the glide. The resulting tone variation constitutes the essence of the style. Research in this field is lacking, and has established only broader performing contexts. This research represents the first detailed study of the form and function of tone-colour, ‘vibration’ and the glide within early nineteenth-century English flute performance practice. An original ‘Nicholson’s “Improved” flute’ has been used to inform the research throughout this study. It will also be used to apply the research in the recital which forms the other half of my PhD submission.

Abstract:
English
Ph.D.
The “dialogue novel” is best understood as an ongoing novelistic experiment that replaces narration with dialogue, so that such basic narrative constituents as character, setting, chronology, and plot find expression not through the mediation of an external or character-bound narrative consciousness, but through the presented verbal exchange between characters. Despite sustained critical attention to the variety and “openness” of the novel form, dialogue novels have been largely ignored within English studies— treated as neither a sustained tradition within, nor a perverse manifestation of, the novel. This study seeks to address that absence and to situate the dialogue novel within narrative and novel studies. Drawing from analytic philosophy, narratology, literary theory, and the dialogue novels themselves, this study demonstrates how the unique formal texture of the dialogue novel opens onto valuable discussions about such topics as cooperative language communities, narrative desire, the power dynamics implicit in talk, and the relationship between time and narrative. Overriding these concerns is an attention to how the social nature of conversation determines how the dialogue novel represents institutional power and character agency, as well as how the dialogue novel establishes a dynamic between reader and text for the refiguration of meaning and the reconstruction of fictional worlds. Chapter One uses Paul Grice’s Cooperative Principle as a baseline for delineating how communities are formed and maintained through dialogue in Henry James’s The Awkward Age. Chapter Two considers Henry Green’s late dialogue novels alongside his novel theory and René Girard’s theory of mimetic desire to illustrate how both character and readerly desire function as imitative practices. Chapter Three considers the novels of Ivy Compton-Burnett through Aaron Fogel’s theory of “forced dialogue” to argue that dialogue’s constraints can offer liberative structure to the novel form and those who are subject to these strictures. And Chapter Four reads dialogue novels by William Gaddis and Nicholson Baker through Paul Ricoeur’s threefold mimesis and Lubomír Doležel’s possible-worlds theory to argue that the dialogue novel presents an ideal form for examining the complex intersection of formal texture and history, as well as the dialectic between narrative configuration and human time.

In this paper the rate of convergence, speed of execution and symplectic properties of the time-integrators Leap-Frog (LF2), fourth order Runge-Kutta(RK4) and Crank-Nicholson (CN2) have been studied. This was done by solving the one-dimensional model for a particle in a box (Dirichlet-conditions). The results show that RK4 is the fastest in achieving higher tolerances, while CN2 is the fastest in achieving lower tolerances. Fourth order corrections of LF (LF4)and CN (CN4) were also studied, though these showed no improvements overLF2 and CN2. All methods were shown to exhibit symplectic behavior.

Abstract:
The present research examines the history of atomic models in the early twentieth century dealing with the contributions of Joseph John Thomson, Hantaro Nagaoka, Ernest Rutherford, John William Nicholson and Niels Bohr and his contemporaries. It emphasizes the explanations from the classical physics till the introduction of the Quantum Theory. This thesis presents an introduction and eight chapters. Chapter 1 presents the investigations which took place before the proposition of the models pointed out in the first paragraph. This chapter emphasizes the classical science, without diving into the quantum explanations. The next six chapters present a chronological sequence of biographies, ideas and publications and discuss the atomic models proposed by the quoted scientists. The publication of the papers on the quantized atom models had great impact and caused many debates, which led us to produce a specific chapter dealing with such subject. . In conclusion, the chapter eight presents some considerations about the integration of the investigative trails that led to the publication of the atomic models discussed, the work on investigative borders fields, the intricate dynamics of power between fields, scientists and publications, and the assertion of new fields.

Abstract:
This dissertation presents a thematic study of the novels of John Nichols. Intended as an introduction to his major works of fiction, this study discusses the central themes and prominent characteristics of his seven novels and considers the impact of the Southwest on his work. Chapter One presents biographical information about Nichols, focusing on his political awakening and subsequent move to Taos, New Mexico. A visit to Guatemala, after the publication of The Sterile Cuckoo. his first novel, brought Nichols to a realization that America was not a benevolent world power. He began to consider capitalism a voracious, destructive economic system, a view which informed the subjects and themes of his five novels written after The Wizard of Loneliness. In 1969, Nichols left New York City, moving to Taos, New Mexico, an area with a history of physical and economic aggression against its predominantly Native American and Hispanic population. The five polemical novels, all set in northern New Mexico, were written after this move. Chapters Two through Four discuss Nichols's seven novels, analyzing theme and reviewing critical response. /V Chapter Two discusses The Sterile Cuckoo (1965) and The Wizard of Loneliness (1966), novels written prior to Nichols's political awakening. Both of these books are rite-of-passage novels which focus on relationships. Chapter Three analyzes The New Mexico Trilogy: The Milagro Beanfield War (1974), The Magic Journey (1978), and The Nirvana Blues (1981). These three novels depict the exploitation of people, the displacement of cultures, and the despoliation of land in the name of progress. Chapter Four considers A Ghost in the Music (1979) and American Blood (1987). Although these two books differ greatly in tone and subject, they are similar in the general theme of waste--waste of human potential and human life. Chapter Five identifies the prominent characteristics and reviews the major themes of Nichols's novels. It concludes with a discussion of the impact of the Southwest on Nichols and his literature.

Abstract:
At the World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition, the Woman's Department offered women of all regions of the country an opportunity to exhibit what they considered "woman's work." As women came together and attempted sectional reconciliation, controversy persisted, especially over the selection of northern suffragist Julia Ward Howe, author of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic," as the Department's president. However, during the course of the event, which lasted from December 16, 1884 to May 31, 1885, New Orleanians and other southern women learned skills and strategies from participants and famous women visitors, and these southerners insinuated their voices into the national debate on late-nineteenth-century women's issues.

Abstract:
In 2008, two-yr-old Angus and Simmental x Angus pregnant, non-lactating heifers (n = 120, initial BW = 448 ± 36 kg) had individual feed intake determined using a GrowSafe feeding system. Dietary treatments were based on approximately 85% grass hay and 15% supplement. Supplements contained whole soybeans plus corn (102% MP) or dried distillers grains plus soybean meal (119% MP). After 35 d of intake measurement, heifers were placed into adjacent pens and fed their diets for an additional 50 or 82 d. Upon completion of the feeding trial, heifers were transported back to the ranch, managed as a single group, and production data were measured. Level of dietary MP had no effect (P > 0.17) on calf birthweight, adjusted 205-d weight, preweaning ADG, age at weaning, cow BW at calving, proportion of cows cycling at bull exposure, or proportion of cows to conceive. Dry matter intake per unit of BW⁰·⁷⁵ and RFI did not differ because of treatment and had no effect (P > 0.17) on any variables measured. In 2009, 24 of these heifers that had the highest and lowest RFI were selected to be fed a similar diet as in 2008 to determine the correlation of DMI per BW⁰·⁷⁵ and RFI between heifers (2008) and later as cows (2009). Cows were adapted to the diet for 10 d followed by a 70 d trial to determine individual feed intakes and weight gain. Dry matter intake per BW⁰·⁷⁵ was highly correlated (r = 0.71, P < 0.01) between first and second parities, as was residual feed intake (r = 0.83, P < 0.01). For 5 d, fecal samples were collected twice daily and indigestible ADF was used to estimate DM digestibility. Residual feed intake was negatively correlated with DM digestibility (r = -0.51, P = 0.03). Production traits from 2008 were analyzed to determine if cows found to be either high or low RFI in 2009 had similar levels of production. Low and high RFI cows did not differ (P > 0.45) in cow BW at calving, calf birthweight, calf ADG, 205-d weaning weight, or weaning age.

Abstract:
Num segundo momento, a investigação analisa dois textos dramáticos, Who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf?
This paper explores interdisciplinary aspects related to the transposition of dramatic texts into films. First, a theoretical investigation is conducted on mimetic genre, transtextuality; on drama, from the point of view of the game as a dramatic element to build implicit and explicit metadrama, and film adaptation. Secondly, this dissertation analyzes two plays, Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf? , by Edward Albee, and Closer , by Patrick Marber, as well as their film adaptations by director Mike Nichols, and examines the elements and features that the authors use to create the dramatic games. Later, the plays and their film adaptations are contrasted in order to investigate elements of dramatic games, and transtextual characteristics that allow the maintenance or the alteration of meaning between the plays and their correspondent films.

Abstract:
This thesis is a case study following Peter Nichols' career from his first major stage play in 1967 to his announced retirement from the theatre in 1982, focussing primarily on his work at the National Theatre (NT) and Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) and looking in detail at the following plays: A Day in the Death ofJoe Egg, The National Health, Beasts of England, The Freeway, Privates on Parade, Passion Play, and Poppy. A great deal of its research comes from Peter Nichols' personal papers, which the British Library acqUired in 1999. It also includes material from firstperson interviews conducted with Nichols himself, with the director Michael Blakemore, and with other theatre practitioners, Throughout the thesis, Nichols is treated not only as the author of a series of interesting plays, but as the centre of a network of relationships and an array of forces. Nichols' experiences at the NT and RSC therefore provide insights into the means of production at these/two companies during a key period in their development. This thesis also addresses the geographical, historical, and cultural scope that Nichols brings to his portrayal of the post-war Britain. Nichols' Britain is not 'white', nor is it restricted to the confines of a single island. Instead, his plays address both the outward spread of the British Empire and the arrival of immigrants from former colonies. Finally, this thesis examines Nichols' 'mixed' theatrical style, which draws on a variety of. theatrical (as well as cinematic and musical) sources, particularly genres such as pantomime and variety theatre which are not constrained by the conventions of 'naturalism'. Nichols' plays are therefore riddled with violations of the terms that have been tacitly agreed by performers and audience, and these violations are discussed throughout the chapters.

Abstract:
The Chilean jack mackerel Trachurus murphyi support an important fishery in the South-eastern Pacific Ocean which has declined considerably over time. In this thesis, morphology of atretic oocytes in T. murphyi as well, patterns of prevalence and intensity of atresia were described. The stages of atresia identified were alpha, beta and gamma. General linear models showed that incidence of postovulatory follicles, sea surface temperature and month/year, explain the prevalence and intensity of atresia. Dynamics of alpha and beta-atresia could be considered a potential proxy for any disruption of spawning season and the end of spawning season. This is the first assessment comparing fecundity between atretic and not atretic females. The batch fecundity and relative fecundity were lowest compared with other species of Trachurus. In T. murphyi, the transcriptomic database (liver and ovary tissue) was generated. The results show a set of core potential genes as markers for atresia as fatty acid-binding protein (FABP) genes and follistatin. The transcriptomic analysis demonstrated the expression of genes associated to protozoan infection. All liver of T. murphyi were parasitized by Goussia cruciate (Apicomplexa), the abundance of the parasite was negative correlated with the host total length. A potential relationship between protozoan infection and atresia cannot be established
