Abstract:
AbstractThis article seeks to illuminate the shifting and unstable configuration of scientific print culture around 1800 through a close focus on William Nicholson's Journal of Natural Philosophy, Chemistry, and the Arts, generally known as Nicholson's Journal. Viewing Nicholson as a mediator between the two spheres of British commercial journalism and scientific enquiry, I investigate the ways he adapted practices and conventions from the domain of general-readership monthly periodicals for his Journal, forging a virtual community of scientific knowledge exchange in print. However, in pursing this project Nicholson ran up against disreputable associations connected with the politics of journalism and came into conflict with more established models of scientific publication. To illustrate this, I turn to examine in detail the practice of reprinting, a technique of information transmission which the Journal adapted from general periodicals and newspapers, looking at a clash between Nicholson and the Royal Society that exposes disagreements over the appropriate role for journals during this period of reorganization in the scientific world.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the historical and fictional character of Margaret Nicholson (1745-1828), a labouring woman who became notorious for her failed attempt to assassinate King George III in August 1786. After a quick trial, Nicholson was diagnosed as insane and spent the rest of her life in Bedlam. Her story continued to interest readers: she was the subject of multiple biographical chapbooks, the supposed author of a collection of radical poetry actually written by Percy Bysshe Shelley, and a source of mingled terror and fascination for both eighteenth- and nineteenth-century readers. The thesis evaluates how Nicholson's story has undergone fictionalization from her time to the present, and examines how the boundaries between fact and fiction in the case have become so nebulous that history itself has become fictionalized.

Camphouse, R. Chris. "Modeling and Numerical Approximations of Optical Activity in the Chemical Oxygen-Iodine Laser." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/28640.

Full text
Abstract:
The chemical oxygen-iodine laser (COIL) has several important military and industrial applications. The concern of this work is do develop a partial differential equation model describing optical behavior in the COIL. Optical behavior of the COIL has traditionally been investigated via a ray tracing method. Photons are represented as discrete particles, and their behavior is described by the geometry of the system. We develop an optical model wherein photons have a wave description. In order to construct the mathematical model, we utilize the theory of paraxial wave optics and Gaussian beams. Doing so allows us to incorporate physical effects such as diffusion/diffraction and refraction into the model. After describing the optical model, we present numerical methods for obtaining approximate solutions to the model in the cases of one and two transverse directions. Results are presented illustrating the efficacy of the numerical methods.

BELL, Pamela. "'SIDERE MENS EADEM MUTATO': NINETEENTH-CENTURY ART COLLECTIONS AND ARCHITECTURAL STYLE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY." University of Sydney, Fine Arts, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/397.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to examine the nineteenth-century art collections and architectural style of the original buildings at the University of Sydney in order to demonstrate ways in which visual material may be employed to shape public perception of an institution. I shall argue that the architectural style of the original university buildings was specifically chosen with particular aims which extended beyond the mere establishment of a tertiary institution for the colony. I will also argue that the style shaped the character of the institution, contributed to the maintenance of law and order in the colony, linked the colony more firmly than hitherto to the mother country and provided social benefits for the founders of the institution. The instant history and character thus imposed upon the institution was reinforced by the assembly of a portrait collection in emulation of other collections of portraits at leading institutions of the colony and the mother country, including the Oxbridge universities. Once the building proclaimed that the institution was comparable with the great universities of the world, the subjects of the portraits at the university could be placed in the class of founders of a great historical institution, thus at the same time enhancing the reputation of the institution and the individuals. The construction of an indentity through visual images was extended by the benefactions of Sir Charles Nicholson, the principal donor of works of art to the university in the nineteenth century. I argue that his intentions in relation to his collections were didactic but were also concerned with the entrenchment of the imperial hegemony over the colony, and again with the enhancement of his personal repuatation. This analysis shows how, by a complex of personal ambition and aspiration for the colony, the style of the buildings and the art collections formed were used to establish the colony as civilized and the new university as a bastion of English tradition.

Abstract:
We consider the generalized micro heat transfer model in a 1D microsphere with N-carriers and Neumann boundary condition in spherical coordinates, which can be applied to describe non-equilibrium heating in biological cells. An accurate and unconditionally stable Crank-Nicholson type of scheme is presented for solving the generalized model, where a new second-order accurate numerical scheme for the Neumann boundary condition is developed so that the overall truncation error is second-order. The present scheme is then tested by a numerical example. Results show that the numerical solution is much more accurate than that obtained based on the Crank-Nicholson scheme with the conventional method for the Neumann boundary condition. Furthermore, the convergence rate of the present scheme is about 1.8 with respect to the spatial variable, while the convergence rate of the Crank-Nicholson scheme with the conventional method for the Neumann boundary condition is only 1.0 with respect to the spatial variable.

Abstract:
Abstract The process of diffusion-limited cell dehydration is modeled for a planar system by writing the one-dimensional diffusion-equation for a cell with moving, semipermeable boundaries. For the simplifying case of isothermal dehydration with constant diffusivity, an approximate analytical solution is obtained by linearizing the governing partial differential equations. The general problem must be solved numerically. The Forward Time Center Space (FTCS) and Crank-Nicholson differencing schemes are implemented, and evaluated by comparison with the analytical solution. Putative stability criteria for the two algorithms are proposed based on numerical experiments, and the Crank-Nicholson method is shown to be accurate for a mesh with as few as six nodes.
