Abstract:
This research paper is focuses on describing the paradigmatic perspective used for development of an educational programme to facilitate critical thinking of student nurses. The study of this nature requires a paradigmatic perspective this is a collection of logically linked concepts and propositions that provide a theoretical perspective or orientation that tends to guide the research approach to a specific direction.The study was conducted in four phases, beginning with the needs assessment in phase 1 through which the researcher determine the needs of the students in terms of critical thinking, followed by phase 2 on the development of an educational framework and phase 3 and 4 on implementation and evaluation and this two phases were conducted simultaneously.The positivistic paradigm allows the researcher to be orderly and disciplined in the procedures followed during the study to acquire information. For this study the researcher worked according to a specific and logical plan of action and conducted the research in a series of steps. In this study the paradigm consisted meta-theoretical such as ontological, epistemological, axiological and methodological assumption. The theoretical basis of this study included the principal of adult learning; Model of curriculum development; Nicholas and Nichols; Viedebeck’s model of teaching critical thinking and Theoretical principle of constructivism. These theoretical frameworks were applied in respectively in the phases listed above.

Abstract:
Accurate tuning of controller in industrial process operation is prerequisite to system smooth operation which directly reduce process variability, improved efficiency, reduced energy costs, and increased production rates. Performance evaluation of a model based PID controller tuning algorithm on a chemical process plant is presented in this paper. The control action of three different PID controller tuning algorithms namely; Hagglund-Astrom, Cohen and Coon, and Ziegler-Nichols on the process plant was examined in a closed loop control configuration under normal operating condition and in the face of disturbance. LabVIEW software was used to model a chemical process plant from open loop control test data. The time domain response analysis of the controllers shows that each tuning algorithm exhibit different time response. Ziegler-Nichols algorithm shows the best performance with fastest rise time, settling time and was able to restore the system back to normal operating condition in a short time when subjected to disturbance compare to Cohen & Coon controller and Hagglund-Astrom algorithm settings.

AbstractIn the late Middle Ages, Nicholas of Cusa renders human cognition as creative, asymptotic assimilation—humans creatively approach their objects of cognition without ever fully reaching them. Questions about measuring are an important part of Nicholas’ model of cognition in two regards: On the one hand, he explicitly calls human cognition a ‘measuring’ (mensurare), moving the concept into the centre of attention. On the other hand, measuring in the sense of evaluating epistemic activities is an issue for Nicholas. He describes humans as living images of god who ‘enfold’ (complicare) the ideas of all things within themselves in a specific way. They measure, i. e. judge, their epistemic activities looking at what they enfold. However, Nicholas provides little information about what exactly that means. He is thus threatened with a serious epistemological problem: the lack of a satisfying criterion of epistemic activities. In my paper, I discuss options of how to deal with this problem. After briefly describing (1) Nicholas’ notion of human cognition and (2) what he has on offer regarding a criterion of epistemic activities, I (3) try to clarify what ‘enfolding the ideas of all things’ can mean. Presenting and discussing two plausible interpretations of this expression—a static and a dynamic one—sheds light on possible answers Nicholas can give as well as the limitations these answers are confronted with.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the performance evaluation of a three-phase transient current limiter in distribution systems. A simulation model based on mathematical model of a three-phase, transient current limiter has been developed. The problem is formulated to justify the stable and harmonic free twelve-pulse and six-pulse converter based transient current limiter. Firstly, conventional methods like Bode Plot, Nyquist Plot and Nichols Chart are used to investigate the stability of twelve-pulse and six-pulse converter based transient current limiter. Next, a comparative analysis using fast Fourier transform is used to check the system harmonics using MATLAB simulation. The proposed design is found to be more efficient in making the system stable and harmonic free.

Background: Palliative and end-of-life care skills for nurses in acute care are dependent on the level of training received. Hospices are seen as fountains of knowledge in end-of-life and complex care issues. Aim: This study evaluated peer learning between registered nurses (RNs) at West Suffolk Foundation Trust and St Nicholas Hospice Care. Six acute and six hospice nurses spent 1 week each, over a 6-month period, shadowing in the opposite of their usual acute or hospice setting. Method: The study used an action research approach. Reflective diaries, questionnaires and evaluation forms provided feedback, giving nursing practice perspectives on learning gained during the shadowing process. Findings: Key features were improved knowledge in medications for symptom management in end of life; understanding holistic assessments to enhance patient care; key competencies completed. Conclusion: This study led to the development of the West Suffolk Foundation Trust 2-day shadowing model offering access to end-of-life care learning.

Abstract:
This paper presents a method to get the optimal tuning of Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller parameters for an AVR system of a synchronous generator using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. The AVR is not initially robust to variations of the power system parameters. Therefore, it was necessary to use PID controller to increase the stability margin and to improve performance of the system. Fast tuning of optimum (PID) controller parameter yield high quality solution. New criteria for time domain performance evaluation was defined. Simulation for comparison between the proposed method and Ziegler-Nichols method is done. The proposed method was indeed more efficient also. The terminal voltage step response for AVR model will be discussed in different cases and the effect of adding rate feed back stabilizer to the model on the terminal voltage response. Then the rate feedback will be compared with the proposed PID controller based on use of (PSO) method to find its coefficients. Different simulation results are presented and discussed.

Abstract:
The paper develops and investigates a novel set of constrained-output robust controllers with selectable response smoothing degree designed for an integrator-plus-dead-time (IPDT) plant model. The input-output response of the IPDT system is internally approximated by several time-delayed, possibly higher-order plant models of increasing complexity. Since they all contain a single integrator, the presented approach can be considered as a generalization of active disturbance rejection control (ADRC). Due to the input/output model used, the controller commissioning can be based on a simplified process modeling, similar to the one proposed by Ziegler and Nichols. This allows it to be compared with several alternative controllers commonly used in practice. Its main advantage is simplicity, since it uses only two identified process parameters, even when dealing with more complex systems with distributed parameters. The proposed set of controllers with increasing complexity includes the stabilizing proportional (P), proportional-derivative (PD), or proportional-derivative-acceleration (PDA) controllers. These controllers can be complemented by extended state observers (ESO) for the reconstruction of all required state variables and non-measurable input disturbances, which also cover imperfections of a simplified plant modeling. A holistic performance evaluation on a laboratory heat transfer plant shows interesting results from the point of view of the optimal least sensitive solution with smooth input and output.

We deploy camera traps to monitor feral cat (Felis catus) populations at two pastoral sites in Hawke’s Bay, North Island, New Zealand. At Site 1, cameras are deployed at pre-determined GPS points on a 500-m grid, and at Site 2, cameras are strategically deployed with a bias towards forest and forest margin habitat where possible. A portion of cameras are also deployed in open farmland habitat and mixed scrub. We then use the abundance-induced heterogeneity Royle–Nichols model to estimate mean animal abundance and detection probabilities for cameras in each habitat type. Model selection suggests that only cat abundance varies by habitat type. Mean cat abundance is highest at forest margin cameras for both deployment methods (3 cats [95% CI 1.9–4.5] Site 1, and 1.7 cats [95% CI 1.2–2.4] Site 2) but not substantially higher than in forest habitats (1.7 cats [95% CI 0.8–3.6] Site 1, and 1.5 cats [95% CI 1.1–2.0] Site 2). Model selection shows detection probabilities do not vary substantially by habitat (although they are also higher for cameras in forest margins and forest habitats) and are similar between sites (8.6% [95% CI 5.4–13.4] Site 1, and 8.3% [5.8–11.9] Site 2). Cat detections by camera traps are higher when placed in forests and forest margins; thus, strategic placement may be preferable when monitoring feral cats in a pastoral landscape.

This single case study aimed at evaluating the use of a photographic tech-nique (i.e., Spectro Cards) within an eight-session clinical intervention based on the Brief, Intermittent Psychotherapy model developed by Nicholas Cummings (1990). We hypothesized that the use of photography may increase the patient’s Referential Activity (RA), facilitating the linking process between the nonverbal experience and the verbal code. Linguistic analysis of the discursive production of a 36-year-old female patient was conducted according to two different strategies: Measurement of the RA according to the coding system developed by Wilma Bucci (1997a, 1997b), and textual-linguistic analysis supported by the software T-LAB. Our findings revealed that the use of Spectro Cards during each psychotherapeutic session yielded significant changes in the patient’s language, in terms of greater RA values, richer discursive production, and a switch of language focus from physical pain to psychological pain.

Abstract:
In general, the speed power performance of ships is optimized for design speed and draught in accordance with the contract condition. But, the contract condition may not be always the same as the actual operating condition. Therefore, in order to reduce the fuel consumption practically, it is necessary to optimize the performance under various conditions considering the actual voyage. This is the reason that the trim optimization covering various operating profiles becomes the main issue in reducing fuel oil consumption. In this paper, a numerical study is carried out to optimize trim conditions through the computational evaluation system called SoLuTion developed by Samsung Heavy Industries Co. (SHI) with variation in draught, ship speed and voyage trim. In order to get more accurate results in resistance and self-propulsion performance, the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations including Volume of the Fluid (VOF) method by Hirt and Nichols (1981) for free-surface boundary condition and moving mesh technique for propeller rotation effect are employed as governing equations. Reynolds Stresses Model (RSM) with the wall function is applied as a turbulence model for turbulent flow computation. Through this study, the followings are the main three factors to be considered in evaluation of the quantitatively accurate speed performance by varying the draught, speed and voyage trim. First, the distance from hull surface to the first grid point should be adjusted to eliminate the effects of frictional resistance. Second, the grid system should be generated to avoid the grid dependency on variation of draught. Finally, the running trim and sinkage of the voyage conditions should be considered. The results of the trim optimization performed numerically are well-matched with the towing test results conducted at Samsung Ship Model Basin(SSMB). As the results of this study, it is confirmed that SoLuTion is a useful and efficient tool for trim optimization and the provided optimum trim will be able to contribute to fuel savings under the operating conditions. From trim optimization study, it is found that there is certain level of effects due to the bulb and transom immersion to find the optimum trim condition. Also SoLuTion is applicable not only to trim optimization but also to parametric studies in optimum shape of the ships considering the actual operating profile.
