Abstract:
Renaissance humanists modified rather than rejected the medieval adaptation of classical rhetoric to letter writing, but they came to scorn the “barbaric” grammar of the ars dictaminis. This development followed the widespread dissemination through printing, beginning in 1471, of the Elegantiae of Lorenzo Valla and its imitators. Niccolò Perotti incorporated Valla's approach to language in a section on epistolography of his Rudimenta grammatices, and soon letter writing and elegantiae became closely associated in textbooks. By about 1500, not only medieval writers but even humanist pioneers of an earlier generation and contemporary professionals who dared to defend established epistolary etiquette were under attack. By 1522, when Erasmus published his De conscribendis epistolis, medieval formulas had become merely comic.

Abstract:
In 1478, twenty-three years after Johann Gutenberg printed the 42- line Bible in Mainz, the town fathers of Cologne engaged in “the first censorship trial on record” as they sued to stop the distribution of a printed book which challenged their authority. The next year Pope Sixtus IV inaugurated papal legislation of press censorship by authorizing the University of Cologne to police virtually every aspect of the new industry. These actions of 1478 and 1479 are the earliest known instances of press censorship. They also reflect the political, moral, and religious concerns which would henceforth dominate press censorship. But as far as I can tell, the first call for press censorship had actually occurred nearly a decade earlier, and had absolutely nothing at all to do with religion, morals, or politics.

Abstract:
The appearance of printed text resulted in changes to the way text is accessed, which leads to the question of whether these changes modified scholarly practice; and if so, how? The following article examines this question in a particular context—that of dictionaries and encyclopedias, referencing classical citations as guarantors and examples. The article defines the evolution of three important witnesses in this domain from the end of the fifteenth century to the first part of the sixteenth: the Cornu Copiæ by Niccolo Perotti, the Commentarii linguae latinæ by Etienne Dolet, of which two tomes appeared in 1536 and 1538, and the Thesaurus Latinae Linguae by Robert Estienne, in its three versions from 1531, 1536, and 1543. These three books represent the same type of object: language dictionaries, aimed towards a specific public of advanced learners, or the learned. In fact, the material weight of book fabrication, the difficulty from then on of collecting masses of texts, the new study conditions, the sheer quantity of texts available, and the famous temptation of universality, made the practice of regulation and of precise referencing an urgent necessity. The position of learned printers of Estienne’s generation was crucial: they helped create and then make commonplace certain material norms that are now so much part of our intellectual habit that we sometimes forget their material origin.

Abstract:
The article considers how the humanist educational and research agenda influenced learning and scholarship from the late fifteenth century through the sixteenth century, and in particular its impact on the humanities (linguistics, bibliography and history). Beyond such essential requirements as free exchange of research information and mas- tering both classical languages in order to read the original ancient texts, scientific dis- ciplines made additional demands that went far beyond those of the Scholastic trivium. The author also addresses the adoption of textual criticism (e.g. the use of variations among manuscripts for interpreting difficult passages, comparing parallel passages in classical texts, etc.) and the broad application of genres and practices originally con- nected with the study of grammar and rhetoric, including most prominently the genre of commentary and the academic practice of collecting literary excerpts. The article provides an overview of questions and problems dealt with in contem- porary accounts of the history of sixteenth century science and philology as well as an analysis of several texts (from Cornu Copiae by Niccolò Perotti and Conrad Gess- ner’s bibliographical works), which supplements and corrects the views that prevail as the opinio communis in this field. As one instance, the rise of sixteenth century bibliography conformed to the agenda of humanist philology while also relying heavily on the potential of the new technology of book printing for seeking informa- tion and propagating it.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The rediscovery and revaluation of ancient Greek philosophy was one of the most relevant results of the rebirth of the classical studies in the Renaissance, and, thanks to the contribution of pivotal figures such as Marsilio Ficino and Pico della Mirandola, Platonism became a cornerstone in the history of Western thought. Nevertheless, before the flowering of Platonic studies of Ficino and Pico, a struggle between the supporters of Platonic and Aristotelian philosophy exploded: this is the so-called Plato-Aristotle controversy in the 15th century. The key figures of this controversy were George of Trebizond, who produced a treatise against Plato and his followers, and Cardinal Bessarion, who replied to George of Trebizond in the Against Plato’s Calumniator. Shortly after, Bessarion’s protégées Domizio Calderini and Niccolò Perotti wrote two treatises in support of his patron and in defense of the Against Plato’s Calumniator, which represent the most significant products of the last stage of the Plato-Aristotle controversy. In this thesis, I reconstructed the different phases of the controversy, starting from George Gemistos Pletho’s De differentiis, and then I focused on Calderini and Perotti’s works, that I edited, translated and commented for the first time. The aim of my research is to provide the first general overview on the Plato-Aristotle controversy, and in-depth analysis of these two treatises, which were produced at the crossroad of Platonism, Medieval philosophy and Modern thought.
