Abstract:
Abstract Type 2 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) show signatures of accretion onto a supermassive black hole through strong, high-ionization, narrow emission lines extended on scales of hundreds to thousands of parsecs, but they lack the broad emission lines from close in to the black hole that characterize type 1 AGNs. The lack of broad emission could indicate obscuration of the innermost nuclear regions, or could indicate that the black hole is no longer strongly accreting. Since high-energy X-rays can penetrate thick obscuring columns, they have the power to distinguish these two scenarios. We present high-energy NuSTAR observations of nine Seyfert 2 AGNs from the Infrared Astronomical Satellite 12 μm survey, supplemented with low-energy X-ray observations from Chandra, XMM-Newton, and Swift. The galaxies were selected to have anomalously low observed 2–10 keV luminosities compared to their [O iii] optical luminosities, a traditional diagnostic of heavily obscured AGNs, reaching into the Compton-thick regime for the highest hydrogen column densities (N H > 1.5 × 1024 cm−2). Based on updated [O iii] luminosities and intrinsic X-ray luminosities based on physical modeling of the hard X-ray spectra, we find that one galaxy was misclassified as type 2 (NGC 5005) and most of the remaining AGNs are obscured, including three confirmed as Compton thick (IC 3639, NGC 1386, and NGC 3982). One galaxy, NGC 3627, appears to have recently deactivated. Compared to the original sample that the nine AGNs were selected from, this is a rate of approximately 1%. We also find a new X-ray changing-look AGN in NGC 6890.

Abstract:
During a routine study of the variable stars of Messier 13 (NGC 6205 = Cl 1639+365) we have discovered the variability of L199 (TYC 2588-1386-2), a red giant star member of the cluster: using the photometric data –in V band– obtained in the 2019 and 2020 campaigns we have verified its variability. Data from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and Deras et al. (2019) were utilized to determine its type of variability and period estimation: our data suggest that it is a semiregular red giant, similar to the other variables of this type of the cluster, whose cycles of photometric variation are not identical; we derived a period of ~27 days (although without a regular periodicity) and an amplitude smaller: 0.08 ± 0.03 magnitudes in V band although they may be somewhat larger or smaller. With this discovery the cluster now has 63 variable stars.

Abstract:
The characteristics of the nuclear spectrum of b galaxies with low activity and strong tines of ionized nitrogen are investigated. In the diagnostic diagrams involving lines of [OII], [OIII], and HB, 4 of these galaxies ocupy the locus defined by low activity Seyfert galaxies and the other two, the locus of the LINERS. But, in the diagrams involving the [NII] lines, these galaxies move to an extreme position, due to the high intensities of these lines. From the decomposition of the emission profiles, it was found that the four galaxies with Seyfert 2 activity present two regions with distinct kinematic properties: an internai region, highly turbulent (FWHM of 600 km/s), and an externai region, with lower turbulence (300 km/s). For two of these galaxies, it was detected a radial flow of the higher turbulence gas, and for one of these, this flow moves the broad component to the red. The two galaxies with LINER spectra show only one component in the emission lines. fhe analysis of the absorption spectra showed the presence of steilar formation in the nucleus of NGC17743, and possibly in two other galaxies, although with lower intensity. The equivalent widths of the absorption lines of most of the galaxies are lower than the values obtained for normal galaxies. From the literature, ít was found that NGC1358 and NBC6300 were detected in X-rays and NGC3312, NGC6300 and NGC7743, were detected in the infrared by the satetite. These facts indicate the presence of 3 non-thermal ionizing continuom in the nucleos of these galaxies. Comparing the intensities of the emission lines with values predicted by photoionization models, it is shown that the best agreement is obtained for following model parameters: power-law ionizing source with spectral index of 1.5; ionization parameter between E-4 and E-3 and gas density of E+2 for the narrow line region and E+4 for the broad line region. Although the models reproduce the intensities observed for the lines [OII], [OIII] and [SII], they fail to reproduce the [NII] intensity, which is always higher than the model values. It is conclude that there is an overabundance of nitrogen relative to the other heavy elements in the nucleus of these galaxies.

Abstract:
Encontramos um pequeno grupo de aglomerados com Reff ≃ 10 pc, −8 We studied the globular cluster systems of two early-type galaxies: NGC5846 and NGC1380 with the purpose of finding features that can constrain their evolutionary histories. We used Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 images from the Hubble Space Telescope public archive, in the V and I filters for the former and in B and V filters for the latter. NGC5846 is a giant elliptical located in the centre of a galaxy group, with (m − M) = 32.32. Its globular cluster system was previously studied by (Forbes et al., 1996, 1997b). It contains a remarkably high fraction of red globular clusters. We modelled the central light distribution and subtracted it from the observed images. We identified and studied the globular clusters located towards the center of the galaxy measuring magnitudes, colours and projected galactocentric distances. We detected 23 new clusters. By combining the objects measured here with the sample of Forbes et al. (1996, 1997b) we obtained a total of 777 globular clusters. We tried to measure sizes for all of them, having succeeded for only 61. Their typical effective radii are in the range 3 − 5 pc. We note that the largest clusters tend to be located in the central regions. We found 7 X-ray counterparts to the globular clusters, these sources are among the most luminous of NGC5846 with 4.2 × 1038 < LX(erg s−1) < 9.2 × 1039. The globular clusters to which they belong are optically luminous, compact, tend to inhabit the most central regions and belong to the red subpopulation. NGC1380 is a lenticular galaxy located near the centre of the Fornax Cluster, with (m − M) = 31.4. The globular cluster system of this galaxy was previously studied only from the ground. Recent studies of similar early-type galaxies reveal the existence of star clusters that apparently break up the traditional open/globular cluster dichotomy. To select a sample of star clusters in NGC1380 we measured magnitudes, colours, sizes and projected distances to the center of the host galaxy. We built colour-magnitude diagrams and analysed its colour distribution. Based on their location in the luminosity-size diagram we estimated probabilities of them being typical globular clusters as those found in the Galaxy. A total of about 570 cluster candidates were found down to V = 26.5. We measured sizes for approximately 200 of them. The observed colour distribution has three apparent peaks:(B − V ) ≃ 0.8, 1.1, 1.5. Likewise for the size distribution which shows two well defined peaks at Reff ∼ 3 e 5 pc and some objects with 7.5 < Reff < 13 pc. We identified the smaller population as being mainly typical globular clusters, while the more extended objects have small probabilities of being such objects. Different correlations between absolute magnitudes, sizes, colours and location were inferred for these cluster subpopulations. Most extended clusters (Reff > 4 pc) share similar properties to the diffuse star clusters reported to inhabit luminous early-type galaxies in the Virgo galaxy cluster such as having low surface brightness and magnitudes fainter than MV ≃ −8. We also report on a small group of Reff ≃ 10 pc, −8 < MV < −6, red clusters located near the centre of NGC1380, which may be interpreted as Faint Fuzzies which were recently found in the lenticulars NGC1023, NGC3384 and NGC5195.

Abstract:
In October of 1998 the category 5 storm, Hurricane Mitch, struck Nicaragua, leaving in its wake mass destruction and devastation. Numerous aid agencies and social organisations poured funds into the country to assist in emergency disaster relief efforts, and to rebuild the lives of those who lost their homes and livelihoods (damnificados). El Mirador in the city of Matagalpa is one example of the many communities built with aid monies after Hurricane Mitch. This thesis uses qualitative data constructed from in-depth interviews with participants (community members in El Mirador) to understand the level of successful community development that has been achieved, the ability for longer term sustainability as a result of community development strategies, and the areas in which community development has failed. Through an examination of the relationship the community has with the NGO the Communal Movement, the question of long term sustainability becomes important. The most telling indicator (that development practice is unsustainable) is the unproductive coping mechanisms of community members as aid and social organisations withdraw leaving members with ineffective social networks and at times uncooperative behaviour. Added into this is the arrival of new members into the community, and squatters, who have only added to the feelings of segregation already apparent, as a 'them and us' mentality develops. This study provides a detailed case specific analysis of community development through disaster relief efforts. It highlights some of the consistent, broad inefficiencies as well as more location and situation specific difficulties of community development. Moreover, it adds to the growing body of literature researching how disaster relief can become more effective and sustainable in the longer term.

Travaglia, Alessio. "Memory, metals and neurotrophins." Doctoral thesis, Università di Catania, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10761/1346.

Abstract:
In the last decades, one of the main interests of neuroscientists has been to unravel the molecular mechanisms of memory. Neurotrophins are proteins involved in development and survival of neurons as well as they are active player in memory formation and synaptic plasticity. d-block biometals, especially copper and zinc, are emerging as crucial player in the physiology of the brain. As matter of fact, there is a significant overlap between brain areas in which the highest concentration of metals have been measured and those where the neurotrophins exert their biological activity. Metal ions can directly modulate their activities, through conformational changes, and/or indirectly by activating their downstream signaling in a neurotrophin-independent mode. Despite the importance of these modulations, there is the lack of experimental data regarding the coordination features of metal ions complexes with neurotrophins. The N-terminal domain of neurotrophins is critical for the binding selectivity and activation of their receptors. We synthesized the N-terminus peptide fragments encompassing the human neurotrophins, characterized their copper(II) and zinc(II) complexes by means of potentiometric, spectroscopic (UV/Vis, CD, NMR and EPR) techniques and DFT calculations, tested the metal-driven biological effect. The coordination features of acetylated as well as single point mutated peptides have been also studied to prove the involvement of each donor group. The functional interaction of biometals with neurotrophins and related peptides has been tested by biological assay on SHSY5Y neuroblastoma cell, providing evidence of the correlation between biological activity and coordination environment. Our biochemical characterizations of the neurotrophins signaling, both in vitro and in vivo, have shed some light on the possible use of neurotrophins and neurotrophins-like peptides in neurological disorders. Indeed, the use of neurotrophins in the early stages of neurodegenerative diseases has recently gained attention. However, there are limits to such therapy, e.g. insufficient permeability of the blood-brain barrier and inappropriate activation of receptors that trigger side effects. The use of peptidomimetic combined with systems that guarantee their delivery might allow to overcome these restrictions. In view of application as functional nanoplatforms for smart drug delivery, supported lipid bilayers formed by neurotrophin peptidomimetics/small unilamellar vescicles adsorption on silica (both planar model and nanoparticles) have been characterized. In conclusion, the interaction of metals and neurotrophins might represent a crossroad for neuronal physiology. Better understanding of metal ion-driven neurotrophins signal transduction and intercellular signaling, as well as vice versa, the role of neurotrophins in the control of metal ions homeostasis, could disclose helpful information and it is therefore strongly raising as one of the most critical step in the study of neurodegenerative diseases as well in the physiological mechanisms of memory.

Abstract:
This study concerning the provostship's activity in Parisian town planning matters during the XVth century results of the civil decisions of the parliament of Paris. The investigation is based on the "reconstituted file" doctained by gathering the different types of sources found in the various records: "arrêts et juges, plaidoiries, decisions du conseil et accords". During the XVth century, the provostship has been progressively invested which the totality of the town's management. The merchant institution, born in the wealth of the XIIIth century, will have to deal with a war economy. Although she had been created to preserve the merchant class' privileges, her destination will be totally different during the XVth century : the merchant activity being relegated to a position of secondary importance, all efforts are at that moment concentrated on the defense of the town against the English threat. New attributions will appear which are going to change her nature and composition considerably: jurists are largely substituting for the merchants. The study of the litigation concerning town planning matters in which the municipality is involved shows clearly the seizure of the state service on merchant institution. This substitution of personnel testifies in fact a profound transformation of the provostship which will, at the conclusion of that difficult period, become a real town council

Abstract:

Protein tyrosine kinases play an important role in the regulation of various cellular processes such as

growth, differentiation and survival. GTK, a novel SRC-like cytoplasmic tyrosine kinase, was recently cloned from a mouse insulinoma cell line and the present work was conducted in order to find a biological function of GTK in insulin producing and neuronal cells. It was observed that kinase active GTK-mutants, expressed in RINm5F cells, transferred to the cell nucleus and increased the levels of the cell cycle regulatory protein p27KIP1, reduced cell growth and stimulated glucagon mRNA expression. Furthermore, wild type GTK induces neurite outgrowth in the rat adrenal pheochromocytoma PC12 cell line, through activation of the RAP1-pathway, suggesting a role of GTK for cell differentiation. Studies using transgenic mice, expressing GTK under the control of the rat insulin 1 promoter, demonstrated a dual role of GTK for β-cell growth: Whereas GTK increases the β-cell mass and causes enhanced β-cell proliferation in response to partial pancreatectomy it also induced β-cell death in response to proinflammatory cytokines and impaired the glucose tolerance in mice treated with the β-cell toxin streptozotocin suggesting a possible role of GTK for β-cell destruction in Type 1 diabetes. We have also observed that GTK-transgenic islets and GTK-expressing RINm5F cells exhibit a reduced insulininduced activation of the insulin receptor substrate (IRS-1 and IRS-2)-pathways, partly due to an increased basal activity of these. GTK was found to associate with and phosphorylate the SH2 domain adapter protein SHB, which could explain many of the GTK-dependent effects both in vitro and in vivo. In summary, the present work suggests that the novel tyrosine kinase GTK is involved in various signal transduction pathways, regulating different cellular responses, such as proliferation, differentiation and survival.

Venturi, Giacomo. "The impact of galactic outflows on their host galaxies through spatially resolved spectroscopy." Doctoral thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2158/1160629.

Full text
Abstract:
The observed properties of galaxies and supermassive black holes (BH) at their centers suggest that there must be a non-gravitational feedback mechanism regulating their evolution. These are the discrepancy at low and high masses between the observed stellar mass function of galaxies and that predicted by ΛCDM models, the scaling relations between the mass of BHs and the velocity dispersion, mass and luminosity of the host galaxy spheroid and the similarity between BH growth and star formation cosmic histories. Models of galaxy formation and evolution in fact routinely include feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) and supernovae (SNe), which can successfully reproduce the observed properties cited above. Models consider the following two types of AGN feedback: the radiative mode (or quasar mode), that operates during a luminous AGN phase through winds powered by radiation pressure, and the kinetic (or radio) mode, in which kinetic energy is released by the AGN on longer timescales through relativistic jets, which heat the surrounding halo in galaxy clusters, thus preventing cooling and further accretion on the central galaxy, and consequently further star formation. So far, the clearest observational evidence of AGN feedback comes from the kinetic mode in massive central cluster galaxies. Radiative feedback is instead more elusive, and has been recently revealed in action only in a few luminous quasars around the peak of AGN activity history (z~2), where most powerful outflows are observed. However, it is not possible to study high-z quasar outflows on small spatial scales (<100 pc), being poorly-resolved or even unresolved in observations, due to their large distances. This can lead to systematics and uncertainties in the determination of outflow properties and forces to make some assumptions on them, which further increases the uncertainties on the outflow energetics and complicates the evaluation of the impact of outflows on host galaxies and the comparison with models. On the contrary, due to their vicinity, nearby active galaxies are ideal laboratories to explore in detail outflow properties, their formation and acceleration mechanisms, as well as the effects of AGN activity on host galaxies. This work focuses on investigating the properties of outflows in nearby Seyfert galaxies, the physical conditions of the ionized gas and the interplay between nuclear activity and star formation in the galaxy, thanks to the unprecedented combination of spatial and spectral coverage provided by the integral field spectrograph MUSE at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We introduce our optically- and X-ray selected sample of nearby Seyferts, called MAGNUM survey. We present our MUSE emission-line flux and kinematic maps of the 10 objects we have analyzed so far, including a star-forming galaxy, NGC 6810, to study the properties of a starburst outflow for comparison as well. We map the ionized gas down to spatial scales as low as ~10 pc. We find ubiquitous ionization cones and outflows with various morphologies and extensions, from a few hundred pc to several kpc. We detect peculiar kinematic features suggestive of outflows with hollow-conical structures. We also identify enhanced linewidths perpendicular to radio jets, which point to a correlation between the presence of jets and perpendicular turbulent or outflowing gas motions. We then focus on a detailed multi-wavelength study of the ionized gas and outflow, in terms of physical properties, kinematics, and ionization mechanisms, in one specific galaxy of our sample, NGC 1365, from MUSE in optical band and Chandra satellite in X-rays. Here we map a kpc-scale biconical outflow ionized by the AGN prominent in [O III], while Hα emission traces star formation in a circumnuclear ring and along the bar of the galaxy. Soft X-rays are mostly due to thermal emission from the star-forming regions, but we manage to isolate the AGN photoionized component which matches the [O III] emission from MUSE. We map the mass outflow rate of the galactic ionized outflow, which matches that of the nuclear X-ray wind and then decreases with radius. The integrated mass outflow rate, kinetic energy rate, and outflow velocity are broadly consistent with the typical relations observed in more luminous AGN. We extend our analysis to the nearby star-forming galaxy NGC 6810, whose bipolar galactic ionized outflow we map with MUSE. We determine the dominant ionization mechanism in the outflow, its density and ionization parameter, discovering the first case of star formation occurring within an outflow in an unambiguously star-forming galaxy. We finally investigate with MUSE also the kinetic AGN feedback, by studying the ionized gas enshrouding the X-ray cavity inflated by radio jets around the massive radio-galaxy 3C 317 at the center of the local cluster Abell 2052. Thanks to MUSE capabilities, by mapping the warm gas filaments enshrouding the bubble we are able to directly measure the expansion velocity of the cavity, which usually is instead assumed or derived from indirect and model-dependent methods.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Since 1997, the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and NNC Ltd. have embarked on the decommissioning and demolition of a redundant metallurgical facility at Harwell. The metallurgical suite comprised three concrete-shielded remote handling cells and 36 lead-shielded enclosures, with associated support and electron microscopy facilities. The decommissioning work carried out by NNC entails the dismantling of the 36 lead enclosures, which were expected to yield over 1000 tonnes of lead shielding blocks as waste. The decommissioning project is nearing completion, with only two large enclosures remaining to dismantle. This paper describes the management and technical processes utilised in the treatment of the lead blocks, in order to re-use or re-cycle the lead materials as far as reasonably practicable. In processing 700 tonnes of lead block arisings from the decommissioning of this facility so far, NNC and UKAEA have segregated over 400 tonnes of uncontaminated lead and decontaminated approximately 250 tonnes of lead for unrestricted re-use or for recycling, after smelting. Much of this material would otherwise have been consigned as low level radioactive waste. Secondary low level radioactive wastes arising from the decontamination process have amounted to approximately 15 m3 to date, of which only a small proportion of the arisings are lead shavings.

Abstract:
To minimize costly down time, pro-active in lieu of reactive FFS assessments offer distinct advantages since the acceptable/unacceptable defect geometries and limitations are determined prior to the actual inspection. General Corrosion, LTAs and pitting were detected in the lower accessible sections of this 2″ average thickness sphere designed to ASME Section VIII, Division 2. API-510 and API-579 Levels 1, 2 and 3 were utilized to evaluate the documented defects in a comparison study. The defect geometries were then extrapolated to unacceptable levels to be used as a go/no-go reference tool for the remainder of the sphere and future inspections. Excel spread sheet numerical calculations and FEA non-linear analyses are employed. A significant increase in service life and defect tolerance over API-510 is realized.
