Every year, China experiences the largest human migration in history during the 40 days of Chinese New Year (Chun Yun). It is a period when migrant workers travel from coastal industrial cities to inland rural areas for family gatherings. Just in 2012, over 235 million people migrated across the country during such short extent of event. In Guangzhou, an industrial city in China, the main rail station handles passengers of 900,000 in one week. Due to the large volume of passengers and infrequent train rides under severe winter condition, these passengers are detained for as long as a week. Waiting conditions are often harsh. Large scale of human and traffic congestions are resulted and mobility within city is greatly disturbed. An expansion of rail infrastructure and station is crucial during the high travel season. At the same time, China is experiencing a transitional economy as it is entering a post-industrial development. There is a huge need for the country to initiate a new kind of economy for further growth. Rail stations are often crucial in drawing economical developments to cities. This thesis investigates the indeterminate nature of rail stations which serves as a double agent: managing the sudden flux of Chun Yun and becoming an economical development initiator in the post Chun Yun period.

The study of the meaning of relations between sentences is a much discussed and researched field in linguistic studies. The observation of how the terms behave in the construction of meanings in texts of different genres and their interpretation effects are also widespread themes among semantic research. In this work we will discuss about the meaning of the relations of meaning and their sense of purpose in a specific genre. The relations that we will investigate are semantic nexus or semantic links, as proposed by Chierchia (2003), which are respectively: entailment, semantic equivalence, contradictoriness and contrariness. The genre we chose for our analysis is the warranty certificate and the choice of this genre was made because it is part of the injunctive or instructional texts group that, in our opinion, has characteristics that favor the sampling of semantic nexus. We will analyze how the semantic nexus are used to restrict or cover the possibilities of interpretation in the warranty certificates. The corpus of this research has 22 (twenty two) copies of warranty certificates from different segments and we decided to choose certificates from separate lines to constitute an overview of the genre. The collection of the texts took place through the internet, without using any particular methodology of choice, only we pay attention to seek warranty certificates of diverse products. We seek in this research instigate reflection on the meaning relations between sentences and observance of these in instructional texts that we have contact in daily life and that, for many times, let go unnoticed its contents. The understanding of the semantic nexus can offer us tools to better read texts of this type.

Full textEnvironmental policy development and implementation has become a ‘hot topic’ in southern Africa, following global imperatives for countries around the world to articulate their intentions to become more sustainable through public policy. Many policies in the region have been developed with the support of large scale donor funding. Much of the funding is often allocated to policy development processes rather than policy implementation processes, and many countries have experienced ‘gaps’ between policy intention and policy playing out in the field. Recently the Southern African Development Community’s Regional Environmental Education Programme (SADC REEP) appointed an environmental education policy advisor to influence regional policy (our Guest Editor, Charles Obol). This edition of the journal, funded by SADC REEP, aims to provide perspective on the policy-in-practice nexus in southern Africa.

This thesis, initially, investigates the phenomenon of climate change, and the likely challenges that it might pose in the future. Sustained periods of heating and cooling is a natural cyclical process, but human activities of the recent past has amplified global warning. This, according to scientists, will impact earth in the long run, and will have climatological and socio economic consequences. Water scarcity, droughts, sea level rise, mass migration are identified as problems that could intensify in the future. At various regions across the world, we are already facing these issues at different scales. This thesis, hence identifies the most pertinent future challenges and simulates those with existing societal challenges. The aim of the thesis is to provide an integrated and holistic plan to address the issues at hand with a view that the approach would also adapt to and mitigate issues in the future. Natural cycles and resources are used as a model to develop a mechanism to create a built environment for a small, self sustaining community. The proposed design is a prototype for a particular climatic scheme, but could be altered to fit other climatic criteria. The scheme through, research, addresses contemporary societal needs and tries to provide a solution contingencies of climate change.

Full textIn the province of Huaura, one of the main factors of student desertion is the preference for agricultural work and the lack of an educational methodology that responds to the interests of the locals. For this reason, as a thesis project, a community-educational complex in the district of Santa María was proposed; which was oriented to develop the architectural program in relation to Alternation pedagogy; which recognizes, in rural areas, the importance of technical and basic training. In this way, it was possible to develop in the architectural proposal the nexus for the connection of the field with the public, semi-public and private space; which encourages theoretical and practical training in an experimental form and places value on agricultural-livestock activities.

Introduction -- Experience and expression -- Becoming a professional -- Study design -- Graduates' experiences: a narrative -- Reflections on communication -- Examples of texts -- Reflections on learning and teaching -- Reflections and implications.
The aim of this study is to inform curriculum change in the mathematical sciences at university level. This study examines the transition to professional work after gaining a degree in the mathematical sciences. Communication is used as the basis for the analysis of the transition because of the importance of language choices in work situations. These experiences form part of the capabilities that become part of a person's potential to work as a professional. I found a subtle form of power and, of the opposite, lack of power due to communication skills. It is not as obvious as in, say, politics but it is just as critical to graduates and to the mathematical sciences. -- There were 18 participants in the study who were graduates within five years of graduation with majors in the mathematical sciences. In-depth interviews were analysed using phenomenography and examples of text from the workplace were analysed using discourse analysis. Descriptions of the process of gaining employment and the use of mathematical discourse have been reported in the thesis using narrative style with extensive quotes from the participants. -- The research shows that graduates had three qualitatively different conceptions of mathematical discourse when communicating with a non-mathematical audience: jargon, concepts/thinking and strength. All participants modified their use of technical terms when communicating with non-mathematicians. Those who held the jargon conception tried to simplify the language in order to explain the mathematics to their audience. Those who held the concepts/thinking conception believed that the way of thinking or the ideas were too difficult to communicate and instead their intention with mathematical discourse was to inspire or sell their ability to work with the mathematics. The strength conception considers the ethical responsibility to communicate the consequences of mathematical decisions. Not one of the participants believed that they had been taught communication skills as part of their degree. -- Participants gained a 'mathematical identity' from their studies and acquiring a degree gave them confidence and a range of problem-solving skills. Recommendations are made about changes in university curriculum to ensure that graduates are empowered to make a high-quality transition to the workplace and be in a position to use their mathematical skills. Mathematical skills are necessary but not sufficient for a successful transition to the workplace. Without the ability to communicate, graduates are unable to release the strength of their knowledge.

There is a total of more than 9700 convenient stores in Taiwan. In Taipei, the capital of the country, there is 1 convenient store in every 400 meters, which is equivalent to one convenient store in every 5 minutes. This thesis aims to explore the possibility of optimizing the notion of convenience, in its provision of amenity and services, to facilitate innovations at the individual level while fostering a culture of do-it-together as a collaborative knowledge-based community. Unlike US where innovators can make and prototype in their own garages, people in Taipei do not have a physical space to prototype without paying the high cost of renting an office or workspace, not to mention the lack of equipment and facilities. This thesis examines how can one translate the success behind the business model of highly distributed convenience store into the paradigm for fostering innovations at individual level. The thesis began with a thorough study of 7-Eleven to try to understand its recipe of success. Throughout its 34 years of history in Taiwan, 7-Eleven serves as the paradigm of its typology and constantly innovates its services and products to address the daily needs of the common individuals. This thesis will demonstrate that 7-Eleven is ready to take on a greater challenge, a challenge that aims to serve the individuals with all the amenities and services needed to become an entrepreneurial innovator by rebranding itself into a new identity - the 24x7 Make Mart. The newly re-branded 24x7 Make Mart will not only transform the physical space of 7-Eleven's current typologies, but also prototype a new architectural typologies emerged from the synergy of conventional 7-Eleven strategies and innovative programs. The 24x7 Make Mart adopts the current distributed model of 7-Eleven and provides 3 layers of megafloors that can be programmed into different uses, including individual workstation, self-storage, event space, exhibition, workshop/ classroom, fabrication labs, meeting rooms, etc, and everything is rentable at an affordable price to the public. The experimental implementation of 24x7 Make Mart will be highly distributed in the urban setting of Taipei and searchable by a corresponding mobile APP called Where is my 24x7 Make Mart?.
