Abstract:
Decades ago, people hurried to read newspapers. He was ready to count to the last penny in order to buy an interesting edition. At that time, the format and size of the newspaper were different, external beauty was not paid much attention to, it was strict, standard, gray. There were long columns and sloppy lyrics. However, the public was interested in the abundance of news on the pages of the publication. It is not easy to please the modern reader. Television, radio, computers, various CD-MD-DVD players, satellite and cable TV channels attract audiences and make periodicals uncompetitive. However, editors of newspapers and magazines tend to compete and consider different ways to meet the needs of the reader. Undoubtedly, there is room for an attractive design of the publication. The designer and layout designer of a newspaper can be compared to an architect and a builder, and the main elements of the design of a newspaper can be compared to the bricks from which a building is being built, that is, a newspaper issue. Designers and layout designers solve a complex of problems related to the plan of this construction – with the composition of numbers and bands, with the placement of materials, etc. The composition of the pages depends on the composition of the entire issue of the newspaper, which in turn is determined by the content of the published materials and their nature. In almost every newspaper, a more or less stable composition is gradually taking shape, which means the design of the pages, the main sections and headings characteristic of this publication. The article discusses some methods of layout of newspapers and magazines.

Abstract:
38 newspaper editions of the Zhytomyr region during the Second World War (1939-1945) was selected as the object of the study. The subject of the study is the conditions of origin of newspapers, the peculiarities of their operation and time of publication, as well as the features of the materials of these publications. Research methods are traditional analysis (qualitative); historical method; logical method; synthesis; generalization. It is expedient to divide newspaper editions into legal editions of the Ukrainian independence movement; official German publications; underground Soviet publications; underground nationalist publications. After the occupation, the first newspapers began to appear in the Zhytomyr region in late summer and early autumn 1941, and the most were influenced by the independence movement. Immediately, the occupying German authorities, using censorship, launched a propaganda campaign about the benefits of the "new order". From the end of November 1941, the publications came under the control of the occupying German government and became its main information and propaganda body. One of the tools of alternative propaganda influence on the local population was the underground Soviet periodicals. For some time an underground nationalist publication was published in the region but had no significant impact on the population. Since 1944 (the time of the return of the Soviet army) all publications of the Ukrainian independence movement, the German official press and nationalist periodicals have ceased to be published. Only one of the underground pro-Soviet newspapers, which became official, continued to be published. Comparison of the number of publications on the territory of Zhytomyr region in the war, pre-war and post-war periods gives grounds to hypothesize that the possible dependence of the number of publications from the degree of freedom of the press. The study of foreign language periodicals, in particular in Polish, remains promising.

Abstract:
This article examines the range of real forms and genres of Russian journalism in the early 20th century, in one way or another related to literature, using newspapers from Nizhny Novgorod, Vladimir and Yaroslavl provinces as a case study; Nizhny Novgorod Leaf of 1912–1913 was chosen as the main study material. The study showed the importance of the literary component of the repertoire of a provincial newspaper, the variety of forms of presence of literature, both modern and classical, on the newspaper page. Literature itself is represented in the repertoire by poems, prose miniatures, and stories, often printed with a continuation. Humorous and satirical texts, literary parodies occupy an important place in the newspaper. The main object of critical reflection and parody in 1913 became I. Severyanin and other ego-futurists. Besides, the Leaflet regularly publishes critical and biographical articles, reviews, obituaries, retellings of book market novelties, publications of previously unknown works and memoirs, memoirs, reports on events of literary life. The main heroes of the newspaper of 1912–1913 are Turgenev, Nadson, L. Tolstoy, Gorky (as a famous countryman), Balmont. The main informational occasion for the appearance of literary materials in the newspaper are anniversaries or the publication of interesting books or publications. A significant part of literary publications are reprints from publications in the capital. The newspaper also pays a certain amount of attention to foreign literature, first of all, modern literature; O. Wilde, A. Strindberg, H. Hauptmann, and A. Frans. Particular attention is paid to the prose miniature (poem in prose), a specific newspaper genre characteristic of early twentieth-century periodicals. The large number of articles on literary themes testifies to the general literary centrism of early twentieth-century Russian culture.

Abstract:
On July 1, 1917, a publication calling itself La Madre Matiana hit the newsstands in Mexico City. The newspaper promised a bold take on politics and society, and its masthead revealed a mission both madcap and grandiose: “A prophetic, truth-telling newspaper; it will block the sun with a finger, bark at the moon, and serenade the morning star.” This earnest but rather comical statement of endeavor appeared in each issue, and Mexicans of the time would have seen in addition an irreverent parody in the publication's name. The periodical's founder, Angel Prieto, had appropriated a clairvoyant character from popular lore to serve as his paper's alter ego. He chose well—the prophecies of madre Matiana had provoked Mexicans for over half a century and gained renewed prominence during the Mexican Revolution. In the years leading up to the newspaper's emergence, various publications had revisited the Matiana legacy.

Abstract:
The paper deals with the view that a journalist as a linguistic and cultural type is a recognizable representative of a certain group of people, whose behavior corresponds to stereotypes about such people. The conceptual characteristics of the linguistic and cultural type «journalist», based on definitions, descriptions, interpretations, have been determined. The positions of journalists by type of activity – a newspaperman, a publicist, a reporter, a correspondent, a commentator, a columnist, an editor have been analyzed and the specifics of their activities has been clarified on the example of modern media: a newspaperman is a professional journalist who works in a newspaper; a publicist is a journalist who writes journalistic works, presents material devoted to topical socio-political events; a reporter is an employee of the newspaper, radio, television who writes reports on the facts of everyday life, prepares operational information material for the magazine, newspaper, radio, television; a correspondent is an employee of a newspaper, magazine, radio who sends prepared materials, publishes them or broadcasts them; a commentator – a journalist who makes comments on radio, television, in magazines, newspapers, etc.; a columnist – a journalist who prepares reviews for radio or television, is the author of publications of a general nature for a magazine, newspaper or other publication; an editor is the head of a publication, newspaper or magazine. The texts of the media present various commentators – political, international, military, economic, columnists of newspapers, magazines etc. Media discourse refers to the editor of an online publication, the editor of an international analytical publication, the editor of a newspaper, and the editor of a magazine. The proposed model of description of the linguistic and cultural types «journalist» can be used to study types on a wider textual material, as well as to implement a comparative approach to the study of linguistic and cultural types in different languages and cultures.

Abstract:
This article seeks to develop new avenues for the study of the Ukrainian lexicography, specifically, a correct usage of the verbal lexemes in the journalistic texts. We have analyzed and edited improper usage of the lexemes «obrobliaty» and «zhaduvatysia» in the newspapers’ publications on the basis of the Urkainian reference literature (specifically, the Ukrainian (as well as the Russian-Ukrainian) dictionaries of contemporary Ukrainian language). This article aims to analyze cases of the incorrect use of the Ukrainian verbs «obrobliaty» and «zhaduvatysia» in the «Den’» newspaper. The latter quality daily occupies a particular place in the Ukrainian newspaper journalism and publicism. Our editing expertise (as well as academic normative usage of these lexemes in the multi-volume dictionaries of the renowned contemporary Ukrainian linguists) made us possible to identify the errors during the textual analysis. This study shows numerous examples of incorrect usage of these lexemes as well as others (specifically, in word combinations featured in the publications covering socio-political topics). We argue that the correct usage of the lexemes «obrobliaty» and «zgaduvatysia» depends on many factors, specifically, context, discourse, topical and problem aspects of the publication as well as their semantics. The latter (semantic implications) of these analyzed words is frequently overlooked by the Ukrainian authors (journalists, publicists, contributors) composing the journalistic texts (specifically, those published in the Den’ newspaper). We conclude that the different meanings of these words depending on their contextual (as well as intertextual) placement determine either correct or incorrect usage of the lexemes «obrobliaty» and «zhaduvatysia». Given its importance and significance, this problem requires further research. Keywords: lexeme, newspapers publications, incorrect (improper) usage, dictionaries.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the history of the formation of journalistic style. The text of the media in its existence is always associated with the coordinates of social space-time, which determine the time and place of its publication. Publicist texts currently operate in the communicative environment of the media and the Internet. It is customary to talk about the communicative environment of modern media. In addition to journalistic speech in the communicative environment, the media also functions with other types of utilitarian speech: advertising, public relations, and government relations. Journalistic style in its modern sense arises when journalism and utilitarianism are distinctly combined in one text. This claim requires confirmation on the basis of linguistic materials of Russian newspapers and journals of the eighteenth-twentieth centuries. The article analyzes the publications of Thaddeus Bulgarin’s newspaper “Northern Bee” — one of the most influential newspapers of the midnineteenth century. The newspaper did much to ensure that society in the twentieth century received influential printed media speech as one of the most significant achievements in the speech practice of society. Bulgarin anticipated the appearance of publications based on the speech concept of colloquialism. In the publications of “Northern Bee”, the beginning of the transition from syntagmatic prose to actualized, which only a few decades later began to appear in fiction, is well visible.

Abstract:
Newspaper readers more readily trust news than advertising content. Therefore, journalists and media scholars consider it important that audiences can distinguish between news stories and advertisements. The authors collected survey responses from 321 daily newspapers on their standards for acceptable advertising for publication. The responses were analyzed to discover if advertising acceptance policies and practices reflect publications’ willingness to blur the lines between news and advertising sections. The data indicate that most newspapers are careful about letting advertisers pretend their messages are really news stories. In general, newspapers’ journalistic priorities for honesty influence their advertising policies. A few newspapers may use the editorial content to help sell advertising space and otherwise blur the lines between news and advertising content, but it is not a common and widespread problem.

Abstract:
The formation of the system of periodicals in two similar and dissimilar polyethnic regions in the south of Russia – Kalmykia and Stavropol – developed according to the same scheme, but had significant nuances. The Stavropol press, aimed at the Russian majority in the region, appeared earlier (in 1850) and was typologically more diverse and numerous until the 1920s, while the publications created for the Kalmyks were for a long time isolated projects: The Russian-Kalmyk Calendar (1911-1918), a newspaper in the Kalmyk language «Oordin ziang» (1917-1918), leaflets and the first bilingual newspaper «Red Kalmyk» (1919-1920). A new stage in the development of journalism in the regions begins with the establishment of Soviet power after the end of the civil war. The work of the press is under the control of the ruling party, and the unification of the system of regional and local periodicals begins. Gradually, both in Kalmykia and in Stavropol, a harmonious system of periodicals was formed, lined up vertically and horizontally: regional / regional mass sociopolitical newspapers – regional / regional youth newspapers – regional / regional children’s newspapers – district / ulus socio-political newspapers – large circulation newspapers – wall newspapers. In addition to newspapers, instructor magazines for party and Soviet workers, literary and artistic publications of regional writers’ unions were published. The polyethnicity of the regions influenced the information policy of local periodicals and the structure of the press: in Kalmykia there were publications in the Kalmyk language, in Russian and bilingual, in Stavropol, along with publications in Russian, there were bilingual publications in two districts.

Abstract:
The article uses new materials to clarify the history of publication and the initial stage of criticism of Andrey Platonov’s story “For Future Use.” In particular, it attempts to bring as much clarity as possible as far as the date of the story’s publication in the magazine Krasnaia Nov’ is concerned and also to clarify the date of Stalin’s acquaintance of with this story. It is argued that Stalin’s attention was drawn to this publication due to its mentioning by critic G.V. Adamovich, in a note published in the emigrant newspaper Poslednie Novosti. Based on the evidence of S.I. Kanatchikov and V.A. Sutyrin, the author clarifies the nature of the “Politburo meeting,” at which the editor of Krasnaia nov’ A.A. Fadeev, was assigned the task of launching a critical campaign against For Future Use. The newspaper Poslednie novosti for some time monitored the situation with the novel and reacted to critical publications on this topic in central newspapers such as Pravda and Izvestia. The article is supplemented with documentary materials: excerpts from the diary of the writer I.V. Evdokimov and relevant notes from the newspaper Poslednie novosti.

Abstract:
The present article reports results from a content analysis of 103 newspaper reports taken from eight major Canadian newspapers, and selected at random from the Canadian Newspaper Index. The portrayal of mental illness and mentally ill persons in these reports was compared with that in samples of articles taken from two comparison mental health publications not receiving popular circulation. As compared with these latter publications, the content analysis indicated that the newspapers portrayed mental illness and the mentally ill in a manner which could be described as essentially pejorative, thus seeming to support frequent observations and complaints from the mental health establishment about inadequate or unfair coverage of mental illness in the popular print media. At the same time, the newspaper medium appeared to present more favourable images of nontraditional (example: community-based) mental health practices, than of traditional (example: hospital-based) practices. Implications of such results for the attitudes and beliefs of the general public vis-À-vis mental illness are offered, with special reference to the influence of the print media.

Abstract:
Abstract The expansion of foreign correspondent networks in the late Soviet period reflected the importance that international news and reporting had for readers of the Soviet press. This article traces the development of one such foreign correspondent network, that of the Soviet newspaper Sel’skaia zhizn’ (Rural Life), one of the most popular and widespread newspapers in the Soviet Union. Although historiographically overlooked in favor of major political newspapers like Pravda (Truth) and Izvestiia (News), Sel’skaia zhizn’ was an important source of foreign news for the rural population of the Soviet Union. The article examines the role of the editorial office of Sel’skaia zhizn’ in creating a correspondent network, tracing the geographical reach of the newspaper’s correspondents (sobkors) and analyzing their activities and different types of publications. While some materials were similar to those published in other Soviet newspapers, the specifically rural audience of Sel’skaia zhizn’ influenced the topics chosen for articles as well as the style of the authors. The newspaper became a practical guide for readers because foreign correspondents provided them with unique information about the development of agriculture abroad. The article provides research into how readers perceived international news and information in Sel’skaia zhizn’, finding that readers expected the newspaper to fulfill their needs and to reflect their own interests, even in the international section.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the problem of studying the censorship of provincial prerevolutionary periodicals (the official newspaper Tomskie Gubernskie Vedomosti [Tomsk Provincial Sheets] in particular). Usually, a reader or a researcher of periodicals deals with the issue of the newspaper that has been distributed, all the work on its preparation, editing, proofreading, and censorship remains “behind the scenes”. In this case, a special typographic print intended for editing and admission for publication by the editor of the unofficial part of Tomskie Gubernskie Vedomosti that was preserved in the State Archive of Tomsk Oblast allows examining the specific forms and features of the work of the editor and the censor. A complex of textual methods was used to study the considered archival material, including semantic analysis of newspaper text, syntactic and contextual analysis, and also a historical reconstruction method. The synthesis of linguistic methods and historical analysis methods is due to the complexity of the material, which requires an integrated interdisciplinary approach. Like most documents related to the implementation of censorship in prerevolutionary Russian journalism, this print as an object of study is at the intersection of textual criticism, archival research, history, and journalism. During the study, the handwritten notes in the margins and in the very texts of the publications were deciphered; the contents of two versions of the same issue (the preliminary version with corrections, and the final printed version) were compared; the most significant corrections were analyzed from the semantic and linguistic point of view; assumptions about the reasons for the edits were made and justified. The following conclusions were drawn as a result of the study. V.A. Meyer, responsible for the unofficial part, was not a writing editor (with his own column or editorials), but an administrator with the functions of an editor, censor, and proofreader of the special typographic print, which N.G. Guselnikov, the head of the newspaper office, prepared for him. The edited publications covered all-Russian political events, political events in Tomsk and Tomsk Governorate, as well as non-political events. The edits can be grouped into the following categories: delenda (deletion of certain “extra” words, phrases, sentences, as well as whole paragraphs and entire publications); replacement certain words, sentences, and publications; correction of forms of words and their inflections; correction of typos; rearrangement of the order of publications; indication or change of the source of borrowing or the author of the publication. The censor-editor edited both articles on local topics and reprints from other newspapers despite the fact that the reprints had already been accepted for publication by other periodicals.

Based on unpublished documents, many issues of Vietnamese history from 1940 to 1945, when France and Japan governed over Vietnam, could be researched in depth. Due to the linguistic and geographical challenges of using foreign languages, such as French and Japanese, the Vietnamese documents in all written forms, including Vietnamese newspapers, attest to their significant values. Along with Sciences Newspaper and Tri Tân, Thanh Nghi Newspaper was one of the three most widely legal-published newspapers in North Vietnam in this period. In its five-year existence, 120 published issues, and 1000 articles, Thanh Nghi had not only reflected Vietnam’s economic, political, and social affairs but it promoted national development by disseminating information and knowledge as well as struggling for social advancement. The documentary values of this weekly newspaper are identified not just in its research articles, essays, and investigative reports. Rather, the newspaper itself became a forum for Vietnamese intellectuals, composed of doctors, engineers, writers, presenting their opinions to contribute to advance the nation. Many journalists were the pioneers in building a people-owned regime. If effectively unearthing the Thanh Nghi material, it could provide tremendous value to research the Vietnamese history in the 1940 - 1945 period in various aspects, thus narrowing the research flaws in previous studies and bestowing a multi-dimensional viewpoint on this controversial historical period.

The first part of the article examines the background of the concept of ‘canard’, applied in France to popular non-periodical publications which reported incidents (often fictional), and to fictional news published in political daily newspapers. According to the testimony of various writers, including Balzac, such fictional news (‘canards’) in the first half of the nineteenth century was often associated with Russia. The second part of the article treats one of these ‘canards’, as reflected in two newspaper publications, ‘Press’ (Presse) and ‘Century’ (Siècle) in June 1844. These publications claimed that Emperor Nicholas I, who visited London at the end of May, went from there to Paris. The article shows why the Royal voyage to Paris could not have taken place and the reasons for the appearance of this ‘canard’ on the pages of the Paris newspaper.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the flagship of the evening Hungarian press - the newspaper Az Est . The publication is considered in the context of the situation in the press in the first third of the twentieth century. The article provides a comprehensive analysis of the innovations applied by the publishers of Az Est . Attention was drawn to the placement of serious news information along with the publication of sensations, a special layout, including, in particular, large headlines, one-column articles and a large amount of illustrative material addressed by artists, the rejection of templates familiar to other Hungarian publications of that time. It is noted that the political diary, as the newspaper described itself, lacked a political position and attachment to any political party. The circulation of the newspaper significantly exceeded the circulation of other publications and in some years reached almost half a million copies. The first major Hungarian press tycoon Andor Miklos is featured as the founder, owner and editor-inchief of the newspaper. The formation of his media empire was fully facilitated by the success of Az Est , a newspaper that was initially considered by its creator as a business project that created a competitive situation in the Hungarian newspaper business and, subsequently, in the publishing business. It also analyzes the PR and advertising campaigns that preceded the launch of the newspaper and aroused public interest. The novelty of this article is that there is no research by the Az Est newspaper in the domestic scientific literature, as well as any materials in Russian related to the Hungarian evening press.

Abstract:
This article focuses on the peculiarities of functional and stylistic aspects of the regional media vocabulary (Ulyanovsk region newspapers). The authors analyzed publications from the three leading sites of Ulyanovsk newspapers – Ulyanovsk Segodnya (Ulyanovsk Today), Molodezhnaya Gazeta (Youth Newspaper) and Simbirskiy kur’er (Simbirskiy Courier) from July 2019 to February 2020. The authors examined the regional broadcasting language, characteristics of printed media and lexical connotation of provincial publications. To study the stylistic peculiarities of the regional newspapers, we analyzed about 100 pages of various newspaper articles (180,000 printed characters with spaces). The conducted content analysis revealed four basic types of vocabulary with a functional and stylistic coloring. The results of the analysis showed the dominance of business vocabulary, social and political vocabulary, Internet vocabulary, as well as scientific and technical terms. According to quantitative estimation, the most widely-used group of vocabulary with functional and stylistic connotation are social and political terms (150 lexical units). This group mainly included journalistic clichés. Within the group of business lexis, the main subgroups were namely business, economic and legal vocabulary. Neologisms that are not registered in lexicographic sources are also widely used in regional newspaper publications. It should be emphasized that borrowings, primarily Anglo-Americanisms are often found in the Russian press. This is due to the fact that the English language has acquired the status of a global language. Thus, today it plays a big role in every culture and in every state, including Russia, reflecting the Russian press as well.

Abstract:
Four major publications in Ghana ( Daily Graphic, Daily Guide, Ghana News Agency [GNA], and Ghanaweb) were used to investigate intermedia agenda-setting relationships in Africa’s emerging era of liberalization. The results are based on a content analysis of daily news reports ( N = 322) and a traditional cross-lagged analysis, which found limited reciprocal relationships between the websites of two print newspapers ( Daily Graphic and Daily Guide). Whereas one non-newspaper website (GNA) influenced both print news media, the other solely online publication, Ghanaweb, displayed weak intermedia effects. Strong correlations between the issue salience of both non-newspaper websites were observed. These findings indicate that intermedia agenda-setting effects in Ghana are mixed. The main contribution of this article is to extend the intermedia agenda-setting theory to Africa in the ferment of new media technologies and democratic reform.

Abstract:
Introduction. The article attempts to analyze the attitude of the Mountainous government in exile and the Union of Mountaineers of the North Caucasus and Dagestan in a broader sense to the events of the Civil War in the North Caucasus in 1919–1920 based on local printing. Methods and materials. The main emphasis is placed on the analysis of materials of “Volny Gorets” newspaper of the Mountainous government. The authors use the problemchronological, historical-systemic method and the system-functional analysis method. Analysis. The article analyzes the attitude of the mountainous democrats, expressed on the pages of the newspaper, to such aspects of the Civil War as the union of mountain peoples with the Bolsheviks, the assessment of the white and red plans for the mountain regions, the real policy of the warring parties in 1917–1920, the prospects for a confederative structure of the Caucasus. The split of mountain unity by the Bolsheviks is considered by their prosecutors the main reason why the North Caucasus was not able to resist the Denikin invasion. Results. “Volny Gorets” publication is an important and extremely informative source on the events in the North Caucasus during the Civil War of 1919–1920. The newspaper’s publications are both purely informational and analytical. The analysis given by the newspaper’s authors is deep and sober. The events of the civil war in the North Caucasus attracted the closest attention of the editors and, on the whole, remained the priority topic of publications in each issue of “Volny Gorets” during 1919–1920. The analysis of the publication is relatively free from ideological press and bias that distinguishes both purely “white” and “red” publications of that time.

The purpose of this article is to elucidate the peculiarities of the functioning of Ukrainian News/“Ukrainski Visti” in the American period through the prism of publications (1978-2000). In order to realize the goal, the forms of subscription organization were investigated, measures aimed at strengthening the material base of the magazine, a considerable array of publications of that time were analyzed (their systematic index was prepared), and the role of the publication in shaping the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Ukrainian diaspora in the USA and other countries during the mentioned period were outlined. The main method of research was to analyze the materials of different genres found in the pages of the newspaper as well as a historical method that allows you to study objects in chronological order. In particular, during this task a valuable fact about the changes that occurred in the edition after its relocation to the USA was obtained, the peculiarities of newspaper’s functioning in new conditions were clarified, all addresses of editors office were found out, the articles related to activities of the Publishing Union and the I. Bahrianyi Foundation which were engaged in the publication of the newspaper were examined; a number of editorial steps, aimed primarily at strengthening the financial base of the edition and its subscribers acquisition were studied. Abstract:
In this article authors take into consideration usage of the verb "point out" in journalistic materials on the basis of reference literature and their own editorial experience. The article focuses on explanation of the meaning of these word in Ukrainian dictionary in eleven tomes and Dictionary of the Ukrainian language online. Materials for analysis are selected from the Ukrainian national daily newspaper "The Day", which is one of the most popular publications in the ranking of national media. It is noted that the token "point out" is correctly used to denote "a gesture, a movement directed somewhere, at someone, something, to draw attention to someone or something; show… point the way… a model for something… mark, highlight, name something, making known, noticeable… paying attention to something, explain, reveal its essence… order someone, make remarks, give orders, to teach…". And in other cases it is necessary to use not Russianism "point out", but "to mark", "to note down", "to fix", "to write", "to submit", "to testify" etc. Correctly write "on the back of the picture the journalist wrote (noted, took notes)…"; "Indicate (submit, write) in the feminine name"; "In the declaration to submit (indicate, write) types of income", "in the section record data on types and amounts of income", "indicate place of residence, series and number of passport, identification code…", "information will not be submitted"; "Indicate (write) in documents", "record (indicate) the year of birth on the envelope"; "Less than 25 patients per 100,000 inhabitants of the country testify…". It is emphasized that the accuracy of word usage depends on the availability, aesthetic impact and effectiveness of newspaper publications.

Abstract:
The article examines the cultural forms of legitimation / delegitimation of authority of the Provisional Government. Particular attention is paid to the personal authority of Alexander Kerensky, including rhetorical (persuasive) devices and visual images which underlay the tactics of praising or condemning him. As the main source, the article uses the newspapers of A.A. Suvorin, namely Malen'kaya gazeta [Little newspaper], Narodnaya gazeta [People’s newspaper], Rus' [Rus], Novaya Rus' [New Rus]. These newspapers are compared with resolutions, letters and diaries, and with publications in other periodicals. The study clarifies some aspects of political isolation of the Provisional Government in the fall of 1917. By this time, the propaganda attack on Kerensky was conducted not only by the Bolsheviks and other left-wing groups but also by the right-wing and conservative publications. The propaganda of the left- and right-wing opponents was significantly different but they had a point of contact: both of them created the image of the “traitor” who was unworthy to remain in power.

Full text
Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: Little is known of the cultural competence or leadership styles of a minority owned newspaper. This autoethnography serves to benchmark one early 1990s example. Background: I focused on a series of flashbacks to observe an African American weekly newspaper editor-in-chief for whom I reported to 25 years ago. In my reflections I sought to answer these questions: How do minorities in entrepreneurial organizations view their own identity, their cultural competence? What degree of this perception is conveyed fairly and equitably in the community they serve? Methodology: Autoethnography using both flashbacks and article artifacts applied to the leadership of an early 1990s African American weekly newspaper. Contribution: Since a literature gap of minority newspaper cultural competence examples is apparent, this observation can serve as a benchmark to springboard off older studies like that of Barbarin (1978) and that by examining the leadership styles and editorial authenticity as noted by The Chicago School of Media Theory (2018), these results can be used for comparison to other such minority owned publications. Findings: By bringing people together, mixing them up, and conducting business any other way than routine helped the Afro-American Gazette, Grand Rapids, proudly display a confidence sense of cultural competence. The result was a potentiating leadership style, and this style positively changed the perception of culture, a social theory change example. Recommendations for Practitioners: For the minority leaders of such publications, this example demonstrates effective use of potentiating leadership to positively change the perception of the quality of such minority owned newspapers. Recommendations for Researchers: Such an autoethnography could be used by others to help document other examples of cultural competence in other minority owned newspapers. Impact on Society: The overall impact shows that leadership at such minority owned publications can influence the community into a positive social change example. Future Research: Research in the areas of culture competence, leadership, within minority owned newspapers as well as other minority alternative publications and websites can be observed with a focus on what works right as well as examples that might show little social change model influence. The suggestion is to conduct the research while employed if possible, instead of relying on flashbacks.

Tourism is one of the sectors of the economy that is most dependent on climate, creating multiple vulnerabilities and new opportunities arising with changing climate. Even though the links between tourism and climate have been well researched, this scientific knowledge has not percolated into policies and the ability to act. This disconnect between scientific knowledge and practices is frequently blamed on inadequate climate change communication to the public in mass media. We studied the mass media framing of climate change and tourism by analyzing English newspaper publications worldwide over the past 30 years. The paper presents a Big Data analysis of the content, geographical patterns, and temporal changes in newspapers’ publications on climate change and tourism.

The search criteria were set to include articles with three or more mentions of these terms. The search period was 6 April to 5 July 2018.FindingsThe quality newspaper genre, and remain-supporting newspaper, The Guardian, in particular, dominated food Brexit coverage. In total, 17 distinct food Brexit issues were covered, with food security and subsidies receiving the most coverage in leave-supporting publications and agriculture, trade and labour receiving the most coverage in remain-supporting publications. Dominant narratives and frames can be identified in the reporting, illustrating newspapers' tendency to promote certain viewpoints in support of their own standpoint on Brexit. In all publication types, political voices feature far more prominently than any other stakeholder group, highlighting the significant potential for this group to influence public opinion and the post-Brexit food policy agenda.Research limitations/implicationsThe authors only examined newspapers over a limited period. Reporting in other media and at different stages in the Brexit negotiation process may differ.Practical implicationsMedia reporting on food Brexit issues has the potential to influence post-Brexit food policy.Originality/valueThis is the first study to look at reporting on food Brexit in the UK media.

Abstract:
The nature of the first English newspapers through the eyes of a contemporary playwright Ben Jonson in his play “The Staple of News” is considered. These first-born publications inherited from their predecessops – actually the books, socalled “News books”, “Fair bulletins”, “News ballads”, “News”, “Newsletters”, hybrid publications (two pages of printed messages and two blank pages for handwritten information for the areas where there was still no printing press) – a book format and two-column layout, which restrained development of journalism. The things were not better in terms of filling the content of first periodicals. The journalistic profession was just getting back on its feet, and its criteria were developed through a long process of “trial and error”. In addition, the quality of news was strongly influenced by the political factor in the form of censorship bans directed to coverage of domestic political news and ethical behavior of journalists as well as by the economic factor which dictated the fastest possible profit and caused neglecting the reliability of information and other standards of journalistic profession, which were not completely comprehended at that time. On the other hand, the continuous lies or half-truths in the newspapers could also repel the regular and potential readers, and this factor played a restraining role in descent of these publications to the level of gossip and hearsay. The Dutch newspapers were dominated before the appearance of the first English newspapers in the information space of Misty Albion, which came to the attention of Robert Burton, the English clergyman, writer and scientist. Being a skeptic and pessimist, he called his book “Anatomy of Melancholy” (1621) for good reason. In the same year, the first English newspaper “Corante, or Weekely Newes from Italy, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Bogemia, France and the Law countreys” appeared under the Dutch influence. Four years later, the second newspaper “Mercurius Britannicus” was published. The first newspaper was depicted in detail and the second one was depicted briefly in the play of the English playwright Ben Jonson “The Staple of News” (1625). Оbviously this is the first English work dedicated to the newspaper and its journalists.

Abstract:
«Ukrajinski visti» and «Novi dni» are, respectively, a newspaper and magazine, two different publications. One came out in Germany and the United States, another ― in Canada. Each of them has its own history. However, they had a lot in common ― first and foremost, that their subscribers belonged to related organizations. Moreover, the Ivan Bagryanyi’s Foundation, which was the publisher of the newspaper «Ukrajinski visti» (Germany, 1945 ― USA, 2000) during the last stage of its history, also helped materially with the «Novi dni». So it is no coincidence that «Ukrajinski visti» paid a keen attention to the materials on the fate and content of the «Novi dni». The article aims to elucidate peculiarities of functioning of the «Novi dni» magazine (1950—1997s) via a prism of publications in the «Ukrajinski visti». In the course of this research, a considerable amount of publications has been studied, as well as valuable facts about the history of the magazine have been uncovered. The activities of the Publishing Union and the individuals who took care of its issuing, the names of the editors-in-chief of the journal were revealed. The article has elucidated the changes that occurred in the editorial board after a death of a founder of the newspaper, Petro Volyniak, as well as the most important factors in the life of the magazine in terms of emigration reality. It also outlined a role of the publication in shaping cultural and spiritual heritage of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada and other countries spanning a significant period. The main method of research was to analyze publications of different genres found in the newspaper. According to the newspaper’s content, among the numerous periodicals of the Ukrainian emigration (diaspora) published in Toronto (Canada), the magazine’s role was especial. First of all, it is one of the oldest of all Ukrainian emigration magazines. «Nоvi Dni» has almost half a century of publishing. To flip through the pages of the «Ukrajinski Visti» stories about this journal is at the same time to trace the post-war sociopolitical, social and, above all, cultural life of Ukrainians. Keywords: magazine, «Ukrajinski visti», «Novi Dni», Canada, editorial board, Publishing Union, article, emigration.

Abstract:
In this article the author analyzes factors and social conditions that in the 1990s affected the transformation of the editorial policy of the «The New York Times», one of the most respected and influential newspapers, not only in the United States, but worldwide. The author of this article traced trends and conditions of the development of American quality press that turned «The New York Times» from strictly quality newspaper intended for the intellectual elite and high-ranking officials in qualitative mass edition. The publishers were forced to adapt to the wishes and sentiments of new readers. Consequently, their decision was to simplify the official style of respectable «The New York Times» paying more attention to the scandalous articles and the criminal chronicle. The article also explores the thematic focus of updated elite newspaper, addressed now not only to the rich people of high society, but also to representatives of different social groups. The subjects of this article are typological innovations in the newspaper related to social, cultural, economic and political changes in the United States. Abstract:
The article examines S.M. Gorodetsky’s essays published in the Moscow newspaper “Russian Word” and the Tiflis newspaper “Caucasian Word” during the poet’s stay on the Caucasian Front in 1916–1917. It is noted that this group of texts contains information about Gorodetsky’s travels, colleagues, humanitarian activities in Western Armenia and can be used as a source of information about his biography during this period. It is shown the relative chronology of the events described in the essays and their connection with the poet’s three visits to the city of Van. The hypothesis is put forward that, despite publication in various periodicals (central and regional newspapers), Gorodetsky’s essays have a number of integral features and represent a structural and semantic unity. It is shown that the texts under study have a cross-cutting plot related to the poet’s travels and his work in the Union of Cities, common events and characters. It is revealed that Gorodetsky’s essays, as well as travel notes, are the pretexts of his artistic works, in particular, the book of poems “The Angel of Armenia” and the unfinished novel “The Gardens of Semiramis”. It is concluded that Gorodetsky interpreted this group of newspaper publications as a metatext, similar to an artistic cycle.

With online news aggregators outperforming most traditional media sites, some news executives have accused Google News of stealing their content, even as they rely on Google for exposure. Through a content analysis, this study examines how leading traditional news providers and trade publications, during the 2007-2010 financial shock for U.S. newspapers, covered the newspaper industry’s delicate relationship with Google. Results indicate that such coverage de-emphasized the non-advertising nature of Google News, ignored readers’ views, and used emotion-laden language (e.g., sensational accusations against Google of “stealing” newspaper content or being a “parasite”). Although Google was often portrayed as the enemy, most coverage suggested that newspapers should work with Google, pointing to the challenge of assessing Google’s role in an unfolding era of news aggregation.

The article announces a new concept of media ecology as a scientific field of research within the framework of the paradigm of mediatization of the information space. The term “media ecology” is already used in science, but in a different conceptual meaning. The authors conducted its detuning from existing analogues at the terminological level, specified the field of scientific research of media ecology, designated its thematic field, defined methodological and theoretical bases and research tools. The possibility of using geographical and geoinformation research methods within the framework of the proposed concept is indicated. Examples of maps and geographical studies on media-ecological topics are given. The results of a pilot study on the analysis of empirical material by methods and tools of media ecology on the example of the largest newspaper publications of the three countries are also presented. These are “Rossiyskaya Gazeta” (edition of the Government of the Russian Federation), “Zhenmin Zhibao” (Publication of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China) and “Asahi Shimbun” (national newspaper of Japan). The study was conducted according to the method of communicative five-stage analysis with elements of comparative geographical analysis. The article contains an examination of the peculiarities of the environmental policy of the three countries, a comparative analysis of the format of publications and a frequency analysis of archives posted on the websites of publications. The authors also compared the traffic to the websites of publications and the average reading time of materials, analyzed the features of feedback and communication with readers. Conclusions are drawn about the degree of effectiveness of the communicative impact of the publications under consideration on the audience. Bukhov, which revealed in the process of frontal viewing of the set of the newspaper “The Voice of Siberia”, published in Irkutsk in 1910–1913, which have not been presented and taken into account until now in publications or in bibliographic works. The writer’s cooperation with the newspaper “The Voice of Siberia” was short — a little more than three months — from December 25, 1911 to March 25, 1912. During this time 12 texts of Bukhov appeared on the pages of the newspaper, most of which were published in the rubric “Little feuilleton”. The writer’s texts are not reprints from the capital’s publications, of which Bukhov was a regular employee, but independent publications — documentary evidence of the author’s cooperation with a regional publication. It should be noted that in addition to the characteristic features of the author’s style and manner of narration, as well as the favorite typically writer’s techniques, they show an extensive genre, stylistic and thematic range. Working with regional publications of Russia at the beginning of the XX century, allows, firstly, to increase the corpus of the texts of the studied writer known to us and introduced into the reader’s and research circulation, and, secondly, to significantly supplement our understanding of his creative evolution.

The aim is to identify the features of censorship of Tomsk private newspapers at the end of the 19th century – in the 1880s, when the city did not yet have a special censor, and its functions were assigned to the chairman of the Tomsk provincial government. The research material is archival files stored in the Russian State Historical Archive and the State Archive of the Tomsk Region, as well as reviews and letters from Siberian Newspaper journalists about the period of their cooperation with the publication. Results. As a result of studying a document entitled “Note on the difficulties with censoring private periodicals in Tomsk”, which is part of the case “On publishing a Siberian Newspaper in Tomsk” (storage location is the Russian State Historical Archive), stages of preliminary censorship of Tomsk publications, the organization of activities for censoring newspapers was revealed, the conditions in which Tomsk censors worked were described. The content of the document indicates the absence of a clear organization of interaction between the censor and the newspaper, as the Tomsk censor was not relieved of his duties as chairman of the provincial board. Censorship was carried out to the detriment of the official’s core business, and therefore articles were often passed to the press that were criticized by the Main Press Directorate, local authorities and private individuals. Conclusion. The study concludes that the absence of a separate censor was a serious obstacle to the further development of journalism in Tomsk.

Abstract:
This article uses metadata from serial publications as a means of modelling the historical development of the public sphere. Given that a great deal of historical knowledge is generated through narratives relying on anecdotal evidence, any attempt to rely on newspapers for modeling the past challenges customary approaches in political and cultural history. The focus in this article is on Finland, but our approach is also scalable to other regions. During the period 1771–1917 newspapers developed as a mass medium in the Grand Duchy of Finland within two imperial configurations (Sweden until 1809 and Russia in 1809–1917), and in the two main languages – Swedish and Finnish. Finland is an ideal starting point for conducting comparative studies in that its bilingual profile already includes two linguistically separated public spheres that nonetheless were heavily connected. Our particular interest here is in newspaper metadata, which we use to trace the expansion of public discourse in Finland by statistical means. We coordinate information on publication places, language, number of issues, number of words, newspaper size, and publishers, which we compare with existing scholarship on newspaper history and censorship, and thereby offer a more robust statistical analysis of newspaper publishing in Finland than has previously been possible. We specifically examine the interplay between the Swedish- and Finnish-language newspapers and show that, whereas the public discussions were inherently bilingual, the technological and journalistic developments advanced at different pace in the two language forums. This analysis challenges the perception of a uniform public sphere in the country. In addition, we assess the development of the press in comparison with the production of books and periodicals, which points toward the specialization of newspapers as a medium in the period after 1860. This confirms some earlier findings about Finnish print production. We then show how this specialization came about through the establishment of forums for local debates that other less localized print media such as magazines and books could not provide.

Abstract:
The Kyiv press is the main source of foreign news of Ukraine in the second half of the 19th century. The article examines the materials of the Kyiv newspaper «Kievlyanin» on European problems of the late nineteenth century. News about European countries occupied a significant place in the Kyiv press. The role of the periodical press as the main channel for disseminating information and forming public opinion in the late nineteenth century was key. Research of the Ukrainian press of the XIX century has always occupied a prominent place in Ukrainian science. Today, some issues of Ukrainian history are unexplored or need to be rethought. The newspaper’s publications will help to find new information for understanding the relations between Ukraine and Europe over the centuries. The article examines the influence of the Russian Empire on these processes. «Kievlyanin» is the most widely circulated newspaper of the late nineteenth century in the region and reached a large audience. The influence of the Russian Empire on international affairs was evident in the pages ofthe newspaper. In most publications, relations between the Russian Empire and foreign countries are described as friendly. The main problems that arose in the columns of the then Kyiv publications were revealed. The frequency of coverage of international issues, forms of information presentation, sources of information, the place of such publications in the columns of the newspaper «Kievlyanin» are analyzed. Articles in the genre of notes, short news from Europe, reviews of the European press, less often analytical materials on politics, economics were most often published. It was found that current events in European countries in the late nineteenth century through the prism of the press were not the subject of scientific research of Ukrainian researchers.

Abstract:
The article considers the issue of linguistic modeling of the image of the police in the newspa[1]per discourse, in newspaper headlines in particular. This article is relevant and determined by the need to study the representation of reality in the media discourse and its linguistic manifestation. In addition, the media have recently paid close attention to the coverage of the activities of social institutions, especially with regard to law enforcement agencies. The authors describe the characteristics of the mass media discourse as one of the tools for implementing public power, organizing the activities of political and social institutions, and forming an image. The paper considers the specific features and functions of the newspaper discourse, and also considers the newspaper headline, which acts as a pragmatic component of a newspaper article contributing to the creation of information and social mediation between addressees and addressers in order to exert a regulatory influence on public opinion. The article focuses on the structural, semantic and stylistic analysis of the newspaper headlines that represent information about law enforcement agencies’ activities in Russia and the United States. The authors divide the publications into neutral (“Arguments and Facts”, “USA Today”, “Wall Street Journal”), pro-government (“Newspaper. Ru”, “Rossiyskaya Gazeta” and “Moskovsky Komsomolets”, “Associated Press”) and opposition newspapers (“Novaya Gazeta”, “Kommersant”, “The New York Times”, “Washington Post”). In total, 60 newspaper headlines were analyzed for the period from September to December 2020. The results show that the texts of newspaper reports perform informative and pragmatic functions, and the newspaper headline is the key to understanding the author’s position and intentions. Lexical, grammatical, and stylistic differences in the headlines of Russian and American newspapers devoted to the activities of law enforcement agencies were identified, as well as language techniques for exerting speech influence on the reader and linguistic modeling of the police image.

Abstract:
Introduction. Newspapers and journals that published works of first national writers played a significant role in the formation of modern Xinjiang Oirat literature. The earliest attempts Xinjiang Oirats to establish a national newspaper — Ili Kundan Keln Sonin (‘Newspaper in the Language of Ili [Oirats]’) — date back to 1910. However, regular and mass publication of newspapers began only in the 1940s. The Urn Zokal (‘Fiction’) journal currently known as Öriyin Сolmon (‘Morning Star’) has been published since 1954. Goals. The article aims to show the role of the Öriyin Сolmon (‘Morning Star’) journal in the shaping and development of modern Oirat literature in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China. Results. The journal has not only published works of ethnic Oirat writers from Xinjiang but also organized the literary process as such. The periodical has published the most famous folklore works and samples of old written Oirat literature for young writers to learn and master the classical literary language. The editorial team has regularly organized training summer schools and creative competitions. This process resulted in the tradition of holding literary conferences to celebrate publications of books, and the trend has survived till nowadays. Such events not only represent a new book but rather serve a platform for constructive discussions over the latter. Over time, the Öriyin Сolmon (‘Morning Star’) journal gave rise to another one — Kel ba Orculγa (‘Language and Translation’). As compared to other Mongolian-language newspapers and magazines published in Xinjiang, the Öriyin Сolmon (‘Morning Star’) journal remains a most popular and influential publication even nowadays.

Abstract:
T. Smykovskaya writes about a unique episode of Russian literary history: the development of so-called ‘labour-camp literature’, more specifically, lyrical poetry, published in the camps’ newspapers. The article focuses on BAMlag’s principal paper Stroitel BAMa, which saw publications of works by A. Alving, P. Florensky, A. Tsvetaeva, and other detainees. In her examination of the material, which so far has provoked little to no scholarly interest, the author highlights the key themes, images and subjects of labour-camp literature. Essentially, the article attempts to focus on the yet unknown history of the newspaper Stroitel BAMa, the main printed medium of BAMlag, as well as to describe the paper’s artistic and journalistic paradigm, which defined the literary activities of Svobodlag for a decade. Therefore, the article covers the newspaper’s history from the 1933 competition for its name until the emergence of the poetry section in the mid-1930s; from the Stakhanov theme, omnipresent in ‘free’ and labour-camp poetry alike in 1936, until eulogy of the Soviet leaders in pre-war years.

Abstract:
Abstract If the idea of cuisine invites readers to an elite place of appreciation, as Priscilla Ferguson has shown, comparing newspapers to leftovers and subsistence food is a move designed to generate suspicion. Nineteenth-century authors wary of press innovations compared periodicals to arlequins and marronniers—or the bouillie de marrons sometimes made from chestnuts. Associating newspapers with such cheap foods implies that the composition of these publications has been expedient. July Monarchy writers who were concerned about the forty-franc press’s tendency to decontextualize and fragment information communicated their anxiety through their uses of the arlequin metaphor. By the Second Empire, a growing market for reliable inoffensive information encouraged the publication of recurrent general-interest articles that would come to be known as marronniers. Neither term was flattering, but their overlap with culinary discourse helps reveal the contours of nineteenth-century writers’ concerns about newspaper format and press consumption.

Abstract:
The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) enlists a total of 157 members - publications directed to the African-American community in the United States. There is currently no research on how these publications have adopted technology through time, or if the adoption of new media contributes to their growth and survival in the publishing industry. In Florida, The Weekly Challenger, Daytona Times and Florida Courier, three of 13 historical newspapers, are connected in history and structure and show different types of survival methods. How have these publications adopted technology through time? What types of trends are reflected in these newspapers? What challenges are faced by the Black community weeklies? To answer these questions, the authors conducted case studies employing participant observation, lengthy interviews, historical research and qualitative questionnaires. A significant finding of this research demonstrates the difficulty to get responses due to suspicion and intimidation from the targeted audience. These newspapers struggle with a diminished workforce who lack professional and technical training and must perform multiple roles. Findings also show that 14 of the newspapers listed as current NNPA members are not currently in circulation and that the publications’ pattern of adoption is not planned, but a consequence of availability and chance.
