Giombolini, Alecia Jay. "Anarchism on the Willamette: the Firebrand Newspaper and the Origins of a Culturally American Anarchist Movement, 1895-1898." PDXScholar, 2018. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/4471.

Abstract:
The Firebrand was an anarchist communist newspaper that was printed in Portland, Oregon from January 1895 to September 1897. The newspaper was a central catalyst behind the formation of the culturally American anarchist movement, a movement whose vital role in shaping radicalism in the United States during the Progressive Era has largely been ignored by historians. The central argument of this thesis is that the Firebrand publishers' experiences in Gilded Age Portland shaped the content and the format of the newspaper and led to the development of a new, uniquely American expression of anarchism. Anarchism was developed in response to the great transformations of the nineteenth century and the anxieties of a society that was being entirely restructured as industrialization and urbanization took hold across the globe. The anarchism of the Firebrand was a regional response to these same changes, an expression of radical discontent at the way in which life in Portland and the Pacific Northwest was rapidly changing. According to the Firebranders, the region had transformed from a place of economic opportunity and political freedom into a region driven by economic and political exploitation. Thus, the newspaper developed a uniquely western American perspective and expressed a formation of anarchist communism that was steeped in the history and culture of the United States. The newspaper was just as influenced by centuries of American libertarian activism as it was by outright anarchist philosophy. As a result, the newspaper frequently included articles about free love and women's rights, issues outside of the typical purview of anarchist communist political philosophy. This Americanized expression of anarchist communism allowed the newspaper to expand beyond the movement's core urban, immigrant audience and attract culturally American, English-speaking radicals to the cause. In the Fall of 1897, after two years and eight months in publication, three of the Firebrand publishers were arrested for the crime of sending obscene materials through the mail. The Firebrand's frank discussions of sexuality, women's rights, and free love offended the local censor and gave law enforcement an excuse to prosecute Portland's anarchists. The ensuing trial would result in the newspaper's closure. Nonetheless, a new intellectual movement had been established, and though the movement would remain small, it would play a disproportionately large role in shaping radical American politics and culture for the next two decades.

This thesis examines how social and economic factors shape the behavior of Russian journalists. Although the state does not practice legal censorship today, Western experts compare Russian media with the Soviet period, and Russia is commonly ranked in the bottom 10% of all countries in terms of press freedom. While scholars identify free press as a necessary condition for a democratic society, Russian media are influenced by flak directed at editors and reporters, which results in self-censorship. The central question is: What is the relationship between the ownership structure ofthe media, a reporter's experience, and the occurrence of self-censorship? A random sample of40 journalists was drawn from ten prominent national newspapers. Interviews focused on instances when reporters had been asked to remove facts critical of the government. The data show that self-censorship is significant in Russian journalism; it comes both from the editors and from the journalists themselves.

Moyo, Chelesani. "A critical history of the rise and fall of the first ever independently owned Matabeleland publication in Zimbabwe : the case of The Southern Star." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1013273.

Full text
Abstract:
This research is premised on the understanding that alternative forms of media emerge to deal with specific ideological projects and, as such, must be seen as satisfying a specific need at a specific point in time. Using the case of a weekly newspaper, The Southern Star which was in circulation from January 2012 to June 2012, this study sought to understand the factors that led to the establishment of the newspaper, what it sought to achieve, how it went about putting that into practice, its message in relation to debates emanating from the ‘Matabeleland Question’ and also the factors that led to the its collapse. In order to address my research questions, I adopted a two stage research design qualitative content analysis and semi structured in depth interviews. In locating the study within the qualitative epistemic understanding of research, it was clear from the qualitative content analysis of 13 editions of the publication and in depth interviews held with 15 respondents that the newspaper was set up with the aim of serving a marginalised section of the population (in this instance the Ndebele) by providing them with a platform to articulate issues affecting them. It also sought to ‘speak’ the ‘unspoken’ within the mainstream media by focusing on Matabeleland identity politics. It achieved this by creating content around the Gukurahundi genocide, Matabeleland development, Matabeleland history and Matabeleland heroes. The newspaper also sought to emancipate the people from the South by advocated for social, cultural, economic and political justice as a resolution to the ‘Matabeleland Question’. However, the newspaper failed to sustain operations due to lack of advertising revenue. As a result of the constraining political environment in which the newspaper operated, potential advertisers were afraid of placing advertisements in the newspaper because of the nature of the content produced, which in view of Zimbabwe’s rival ethnic history, could easily be labelled ethnically divisive. Also, being a new player in the market worked to their disadvantage as prospective advertisers opted to place their adverts in “tried and tested” publications (Zimpapers and Alpha Media Holdings). Additionally, because of poor management, roles were not clearly defined and hence the newspaper failed to operate as a business enterprise. As noted during interviews with junior reporters, there was little or no experience at management level. The paper lacked a coordinated circulation strategy and from inception, was never officially launched, which resulted in the failure to reach significant audiences.

Opolot, Benedict. "An investigation of the Ugandan publication Red Pepper: a case study from 2001-2004." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1007713.

Full text
Abstract:
Red Pepper has been the subject of much discussion in Uganda, with some accounts describing it as a liberal mouthpiece, and others as pornography. This case study, therefore, sought to investigate Red Pepper as a media phenomenon in Uganda in the 21st century, specifically between 2001 and 2004. Employing quantitative and qualitative methodologies, it focused on the production process and the text. Although sexualised content dominate its pages, and news about issues such as the environment and education are near-absent, its managers describe the publication as legitimate, normative and consistent with liberal media standards. Accordingly, to interrogate Red Pepper in terms of its journalistic functions, selected debates associated with liberal approaches to news media, media political economy, tabloidisation, pornography and gendered relations were reviewed. The analysis entailed five phases. The first was a denotative or descriptive analysis, which focused on the publication's structure and content focus. This was followed by an interview with management, a broad content analysis to establish the incidence of predefined content categories expected of the tabloid, pornographic and liberal press and, lastly, a theme-based content analysis that sought to establish the potential meanings and framing of the dominant content categories of gossip and sexualised copy. Overall, the study found Red Pepper to be a misogynistic tabloid, having elements said to belong to pornography and homophobia. According to the findings, not only does Red Pepper fall short of a liberal understanding of a newspaper in terms of diversity of topics, provision of information and professional practice, it also does not fit the understanding of an alternative public sphere, mainly because it fails to challenge the patriarchal framing of sex, sexuality and gendered relations. This framing is undertaken deliberately as a means to securing economic rather than journalistic ideals to which the editors pay lip service. Consequently, the gossip and sexualised content are not problematised and as such discourses and power relations therein are not interrogated. Neither are inadequacies in local systems addressed nor corrective action mobilised as expected of some tabloids. All in all, the publication fronts superficial entertainment content that echoes particular gender constructions and patriarchal commonsense and entrenches the (undesirable) status quo which, ironically, it claims to challenge.

Abstract:
Most gatekeeping studies involve evaluating journalists and editors with years of media writing experience to determine how they are influenced by gatekeeping forces. While many universities publish a campus newspaper that is written and edited by the students, no research was found analyzing the impact that gatekeeping has on student newspaper publications. Therefore, this study attempted to measure the influence of gatekeeping forces on student reporters and student editors who work on university newspaper publications. Data was collected through a web-based questionnaire that measured the influence of individual and routine gatekeeping forces. A convenient sample size of N = 42 was used to gather information about how students perceived a news story's level of newsworthiness. Results of this study indicated that particular routine forces of news media actions and influences of newsworthiness were more significant than other forces and significant relationships exist among certain individual and routine forces. This study also looked at how news media job titles can determine the level of importance and influence of gatekeeping forces on news stories before reaching the final destination of publishing. Results indicated that significant differences exist in routine gatekeeping forces when compared to university student job title.

Abstract:

This thesis examined the history of competition between two Rockhampton daily newspapers focusing predominantly on the influences exercised in reporting labour issues and industrial relations between 1891 and 1915, examining the influence by both owners, editors and local politicians alike on the way these issues were reported.

The research was undertaken to improve current knowledge on press reporting of the labour movement through key events. The thesis addressed a specific timeframe with the same methodology applied to key events. The proposed methodology has arisen from a review of primary sources (newspapers) within set timeframes focused around key events and people. A case study of Rockhampton daily newspapers was undertaken during the period 1899 to 1915. This time period was chosen because it was a time of political unrest and labor party development.

The general theme of industrial relations was selected to demonstrate the similarities and differences in how newspapers reported events to influence readers in order to explore the connection between press and politicians in greater details. In so doing, this thesis identifies the close connection between press and politicians, such as William Kidston and T.J Ryan over this turbulent period and is a comparative study of such seminal events as the 1899 shearers' strike, the 1911 sugar strike and the 1912 tramway and general strike.

This thesis is a study in competition between two daily newspapers in the polemical tradition, encompassing an analysis of the Fourth Estate through the press -political nexus. This thesis proposes that the reporting of key events and people influenced the success of the labour movement in Queensland

Information education or IT in education has become an important issue of modern education. Meanwhile, integrating information technology into instruction (or technology integration) has especially become one of the trends and major practices in Taiwan. The purpose of this research is to investigate how it can be integrated into the primary school curriculums the activities of the senior graders’ participation in publishing school newspaper, and also to examine the students'' learning performances. The researcher put the course into practice in a primary school, and also produced multimedia teaching materials concerning about the know-how of editing newspapers as well as a website with an on-line news delivery system to assist learning. It took 11 weeks and 32 periods to lead the fifth grade students to learn how to plan, edit and publish a student''s newspaper in Integrative Activity classes. The case study is directed under the method of quasi-experimental research. The ways of collecting data include observing, interviewing, document collecting and questionnaire surveying. In addition to the researcher''s instruction in the classroom, the students had ever paid a visit to a press, watched a movie and also learned by computer and internet to get the knowledge and skills about publication. They worked as publishers, editors and writers to practice and experiment during a series of related classes. The results of the research indicate that the students have shown significant differences between the experimental group and the control group in knowledge and skills concerning about publishing. Those who were in experimental group have obtained the capabilities to plan, edit, write and publish the newspaper, and their media literacy had increased at the same time. Moreover, the finally published newspaper showed that the senior graders had been able to work as a team with each other to finish their publication tasks. Through the training, they also have gains in skills about writing, computer, communication, cooperation, planning, creating, problem-solving, and so on. At the same time, the learning process had promoted a harmonious relationship between the schoolmates and had developed their communication with teachers, other students and the parents. The study also showed that there were beneficial effects on learning outcomes to integrate information technology into teaching and to assist learning with websites, especially in such respects as communicating with classmates, sharing information, preparing for lessons before classes and reviewing learning contents. As for the on-line news delivery system, it had made it more convenient to deal with publishing affairs, and also the students had acquired more knowledge about the internet and thus had learned how to communicate through it. The curriculum of publishing school newspaper is directly related to the following learning areas as Language Arts, Social Studies, Science and Technology, Integrative Activities, Arts and Humanities, and so on. Furthermore, with its topic-based orientation, it can broaden the learning scope by bringing in issues from Health and Physical Education, Mathematics, Information Technology Education, Career Development Education, and so on. Therefore, in the future, every primary school can have its own school-based design of newspaper publication curriculum, and the curriculum can be put into practice in single-class, joint-class, mixed-grade, cross-area, computer-integrated and many other cooperative ways. The study has obtained the supports of the students, the parents and the teachers. After the experiment has finished, the class that participated in this study still continued and broadened the scope to publish the second newspaper by the end of the semester.

As traditional media in general are making a comeback, newspapers still have a very tough road ahead. While circulation numbers show a long, steady decline, classified revenues have plummeted and newspapers have never been a strong display medium. It’s no exaggeration to say that, next to digital, free newspapers have been the biggest media trend of the last decade. The idea is counter-intuitive, but makes a lot of sense. Free newspapers simply save enough of those costs to make giving them away a business worthy idea. Moreover, free newspapers have come up with some clever innovations that can be applied elsewhere in the newspaper world. This study tries to investigate the business model, commercial strategy of fresh Kaohsiung newspaper. The study goal is to aim at the commercial advertisement consumers’ opinions to gather the business information. 421 consumers’ opinion is received. The results show below: a) Business Model has highly agreement of consumer. b) Innovation strategy can match consumer’s demand. c) Service is the most agree item, publication intention is highly. d) Compatibility, observability, simplicity and commercial advertisement will influence publication intention of consumer. e) Marriage, age and education of respondents has difference score on business model, innovation strategy and publication intention.

Apple Daily has made an impact on the strongly competitive newspaper market in Taiwan since its publication in 2003, spilling over tabloid news values into other media outlets. This study focuses solely on traditionally serious and hard political news and sets out to examine whether it has been influenced, or tabloidized, over time. Quantitative content analysis on political news items from three largest non-tabloid newspapers - Liberty Times, United Daily and China Times - was carried out and measured at three different levels: form, main topic and style. News samples were randomly selected in 2000, 2003 and 2006. In terms of form, more and more political news incorporated visual elements, such as photographs, as means for presenting information, while the page space devoted to text remained relatively stable. As for main topic, the overall decrease of coverage on government, parliament and policies was evident, and the focus has been shifted toward political scandal. With regard to style, the personalized coverage on political figures was done with a more softer approach by focusing more on human interest stories. And personal conflicts of politicians were highlighted in coverage on political conflict. Finally, measurement of objective reporting was adopted to gauge whether there was an overall decrease in journalistic standards of political reporting. The results were mixed. While the basic practices of not presenting subjective opinion and anonymous news source were maintained over the period, the news comments have become more partisan and the balanced presentation of conflicting political views has decreased.
