Abstract:
Decades ago, people hurried to read newspapers. He was ready to count to the last penny in order to buy an interesting edition. At that time, the format and size of the newspaper were different, external beauty was not paid much attention to, it was strict, standard, gray. There were long columns and sloppy lyrics. However, the public was interested in the abundance of news on the pages of the publication. It is not easy to please the modern reader. Television, radio, computers, various CD-MD-DVD players, satellite and cable TV channels attract audiences and make periodicals uncompetitive. However, editors of newspapers and magazines tend to compete and consider different ways to meet the needs of the reader. Undoubtedly, there is room for an attractive design of the publication. The designer and layout designer of a newspaper can be compared to an architect and a builder, and the main elements of the design of a newspaper can be compared to the bricks from which a building is being built, that is, a newspaper issue. Designers and layout designers solve a complex of problems related to the plan of this construction – with the composition of numbers and bands, with the placement of materials, etc. The composition of the pages depends on the composition of the entire issue of the newspaper, which in turn is determined by the content of the published materials and their nature. In almost every newspaper, a more or less stable composition is gradually taking shape, which means the design of the pages, the main sections and headings characteristic of this publication. The article discusses some methods of layout of newspapers and magazines.

Abstract:
38 newspaper editions of the Zhytomyr region during the Second World War (1939-1945) was selected as the object of the study. The subject of the study is the conditions of origin of newspapers, the peculiarities of their operation and time of publication, as well as the features of the materials of these publications. Research methods are traditional analysis (qualitative); historical method; logical method; synthesis; generalization. It is expedient to divide newspaper editions into legal editions of the Ukrainian independence movement; official German publications; underground Soviet publications; underground nationalist publications. After the occupation, the first newspapers began to appear in the Zhytomyr region in late summer and early autumn 1941, and the most were influenced by the independence movement. Immediately, the occupying German authorities, using censorship, launched a propaganda campaign about the benefits of the "new order". From the end of November 1941, the publications came under the control of the occupying German government and became its main information and propaganda body. One of the tools of alternative propaganda influence on the local population was the underground Soviet periodicals. For some time an underground nationalist publication was published in the region but had no significant impact on the population. Since 1944 (the time of the return of the Soviet army) all publications of the Ukrainian independence movement, the German official press and nationalist periodicals have ceased to be published. Only one of the underground pro-Soviet newspapers, which became official, continued to be published. Comparison of the number of publications on the territory of Zhytomyr region in the war, pre-war and post-war periods gives grounds to hypothesize that the possible dependence of the number of publications from the degree of freedom of the press. The study of foreign language periodicals, in particular in Polish, remains promising.

Abstract:
This article examines the range of real forms and genres of Russian journalism in the early 20th century, in one way or another related to literature, using newspapers from Nizhny Novgorod, Vladimir and Yaroslavl provinces as a case study; Nizhny Novgorod Leaf of 1912–1913 was chosen as the main study material. The study showed the importance of the literary component of the repertoire of a provincial newspaper, the variety of forms of presence of literature, both modern and classical, on the newspaper page. Literature itself is represented in the repertoire by poems, prose miniatures, and stories, often printed with a continuation. Humorous and satirical texts, literary parodies occupy an important place in the newspaper. The main object of critical reflection and parody in 1913 became I. Severyanin and other ego-futurists. Besides, the Leaflet regularly publishes critical and biographical articles, reviews, obituaries, retellings of book market novelties, publications of previously unknown works and memoirs, memoirs, reports on events of literary life. The main heroes of the newspaper of 1912–1913 are Turgenev, Nadson, L. Tolstoy, Gorky (as a famous countryman), Balmont. The main informational occasion for the appearance of literary materials in the newspaper are anniversaries or the publication of interesting books or publications. A significant part of literary publications are reprints from publications in the capital. The newspaper also pays a certain amount of attention to foreign literature, first of all, modern literature; O. Wilde, A. Strindberg, H. Hauptmann, and A. Frans. Particular attention is paid to the prose miniature (poem in prose), a specific newspaper genre characteristic of early twentieth-century periodicals. The large number of articles on literary themes testifies to the general literary centrism of early twentieth-century Russian culture.

On July 1, 1917, a publication calling itself La Madre Matiana hit the newsstands in Mexico City. The newspaper promised a bold take on politics and society, and its masthead revealed a mission both madcap and grandiose: “A prophetic, truth-telling newspaper; it will block the sun with a finger, bark at the moon, and serenade the morning star.” This earnest but rather comical statement of endeavor appeared in each issue, and Mexicans of the time would have seen in addition an irreverent parody in the publication's name. The periodical's founder, Angel Prieto, had appropriated a clairvoyant character from popular lore to serve as his paper's alter ego. He chose well—the prophecies of madre Matiana had provoked Mexicans for over half a century and gained renewed prominence during the Mexican Revolution. In the years leading up to the newspaper's emergence, various publications had revisited the Matiana legacy.

The paper deals with the view that a journalist as a linguistic and cultural type is a recognizable representative of a certain group of people, whose behavior corresponds to stereotypes about such people. The conceptual characteristics of the linguistic and cultural type «journalist», based on definitions, descriptions, interpretations, have been determined. The positions of journalists by type of activity – a newspaperman, a publicist, a reporter, a correspondent, a commentator, a columnist, an editor have been analyzed and the specifics of their activities has been clarified on the example of modern media: a newspaperman is a professional journalist who works in a newspaper; a publicist is a journalist who writes journalistic works, presents material devoted to topical socio-political events; a reporter is an employee of the newspaper, radio, television who writes reports on the facts of everyday life, prepares operational information material for the magazine, newspaper, radio, television; a correspondent is an employee of a newspaper, magazine, radio who sends prepared materials, publishes them or broadcasts them; a commentator – a journalist who makes comments on radio, television, in magazines, newspapers, etc.; a columnist – a journalist who prepares reviews for radio or television, is the author of publications of a general nature for a magazine, newspaper or other publication; an editor is the head of a publication, newspaper or magazine. The texts of the media present various commentators – political, international, military, economic, columnists of newspapers, magazines etc. Media discourse refers to the editor of an online publication, the editor of an international analytical publication, the editor of a newspaper, and the editor of a magazine. The proposed model of description of the linguistic and cultural types «journalist» can be used to study types on a wider textual material, as well as to implement a comparative approach to the study of linguistic and cultural types in different languages and cultures.

Abstract:
This article seeks to develop new avenues for the study of the Ukrainian lexicography, specifically, a correct usage of the verbal lexemes in the journalistic texts. We have analyzed and edited improper usage of the lexemes «obrobliaty» and «zhaduvatysia» in the newspapers’ publications on the basis of the Urkainian reference literature (specifically, the Ukrainian (as well as the Russian-Ukrainian) dictionaries of contemporary Ukrainian language). This article aims to analyze cases of the incorrect use of the Ukrainian verbs «obrobliaty» and «zhaduvatysia» in the «Den’» newspaper. The latter quality daily occupies a particular place in the Ukrainian newspaper journalism and publicism. Our editing expertise (as well as academic normative usage of these lexemes in the multi-volume dictionaries of the renowned contemporary Ukrainian linguists) made us possible to identify the errors during the textual analysis. This study shows numerous examples of incorrect usage of these lexemes as well as others (specifically, in word combinations featured in the publications covering socio-political topics). We argue that the correct usage of the lexemes «obrobliaty» and «zgaduvatysia» depends on many factors, specifically, context, discourse, topical and problem aspects of the publication as well as their semantics. The latter (semantic implications) of these analyzed words is frequently overlooked by the Ukrainian authors (journalists, publicists, contributors) composing the journalistic texts (specifically, those published in the Den’ newspaper). We conclude that the different meanings of these words depending on their contextual (as well as intertextual) placement determine either correct or incorrect usage of the lexemes «obrobliaty» and «zhaduvatysia». The article is devoted to the history of the formation of journalistic style. The text of the media in its existence is always associated with the coordinates of social space-time, which determine the time and place of its publication. Publicist texts currently operate in the communicative environment of the media and the Internet. It is customary to talk about the communicative environment of modern media. In addition to journalistic speech in the communicative environment, the media also functions with other types of utilitarian speech: advertising, public relations, and government relations. Journalistic style in its modern sense arises when journalism and utilitarianism are distinctly combined in one text. This claim requires confirmation on the basis of linguistic materials of Russian newspapers and journals of the eighteenth-twentieth centuries. The article analyzes the publications of Thaddeus Bulgarin’s newspaper “Northern Bee” — one of the most influential newspapers of the midnineteenth century. The newspaper did much to ensure that society in the twentieth century received influential printed media speech as one of the most significant achievements in the speech practice of society. Bulgarin anticipated the appearance of publications based on the speech concept of colloquialism. In the publications of “Northern Bee”, the beginning of the transition from syntagmatic prose to actualized, which only a few decades later began to appear in fiction, is well visible.

Newspaper readers more readily trust news than advertising content. Therefore, journalists and media scholars consider it important that audiences can distinguish between news stories and advertisements. The authors collected survey responses from 321 daily newspapers on their standards for acceptable advertising for publication. The responses were analyzed to discover if advertising acceptance policies and practices reflect publications’ willingness to blur the lines between news and advertising sections. The data indicate that most newspapers are careful about letting advertisers pretend their messages are really news stories. In general, newspapers’ journalistic priorities for honesty influence their advertising policies. A few newspapers may use the editorial content to help sell advertising space and otherwise blur the lines between news and advertising content, but it is not a common and widespread problem.

This research examines coverage of refugees in an attempt to further understand how media frames are actively, and perhaps ideologically, constructed. Articles between 2010 and 2015 were analysed in accordance with their publication in sixteen different news publications from the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom. The newspapers were selected from opposite ends of the ideological political spectrum. This research explores the consequences of these findings for the international community and for objective international newspaper reporting.

Abstract:
The formation of the system of periodicals in two similar and dissimilar polyethnic regions in the south of Russia – Kalmykia and Stavropol – developed according to the same scheme, but had significant nuances. The Stavropol press, aimed at the Russian majority in the region, appeared earlier (in 1850) and was typologically more diverse and numerous until the 1920s, while the publications created for the Kalmyks were for a long time isolated projects: The Russian-Kalmyk Calendar (1911-1918), a newspaper in the Kalmyk language «Oordin ziang» (1917-1918), leaflets and the first bilingual newspaper «Red Kalmyk» (1919-1920). A new stage in the development of journalism in the regions begins with the establishment of Soviet power after the end of the civil war. The work of the press is under the control of the ruling party, and the unification of the system of regional and local periodicals begins. Gradually, both in Kalmykia and in Stavropol, a harmonious system of periodicals was formed, lined up vertically and horizontally: regional / regional mass sociopolitical newspapers – regional / regional youth newspapers – regional / regional children’s newspapers – district / ulus socio-political newspapers – large circulation newspapers – wall newspapers. In addition to newspapers, instructor magazines for party and Soviet workers, literary and artistic publications of regional writers’ unions were published. The polyethnicity of the regions influenced the information policy of local periodicals and the structure of the press: in Kalmykia there were publications in the Kalmyk language, in Russian and bilingual, in Stavropol, along with publications in Russian, there were bilingual publications in two districts.

Abstract:
The Firebrand was an anarchist communist newspaper that was printed in Portland, Oregon from January 1895 to September 1897. The newspaper was a central catalyst behind the formation of the culturally American anarchist movement, a movement whose vital role in shaping radicalism in the United States during the Progressive Era has largely been ignored by historians. The central argument of this thesis is that the Firebrand publishers' experiences in Gilded Age Portland shaped the content and the format of the newspaper and led to the development of a new, uniquely American expression of anarchism. Anarchism was developed in response to the great transformations of the nineteenth century and the anxieties of a society that was being entirely restructured as industrialization and urbanization took hold across the globe. The anarchism of the Firebrand was a regional response to these same changes, an expression of radical discontent at the way in which life in Portland and the Pacific Northwest was rapidly changing. According to the Firebranders, the region had transformed from a place of economic opportunity and political freedom into a region driven by economic and political exploitation. Thus, the newspaper developed a uniquely western American perspective and expressed a formation of anarchist communism that was steeped in the history and culture of the United States. The newspaper was just as influenced by centuries of American libertarian activism as it was by outright anarchist philosophy. As a result, the newspaper frequently included articles about free love and women's rights, issues outside of the typical purview of anarchist communist political philosophy. This Americanized expression of anarchist communism allowed the newspaper to expand beyond the movement's core urban, immigrant audience and attract culturally American, English-speaking radicals to the cause. In the Fall of 1897, after two years and eight months in publication, three of the Firebrand publishers were arrested for the crime of sending obscene materials through the mail. The Firebrand's frank discussions of sexuality, women's rights, and free love offended the local censor and gave law enforcement an excuse to prosecute Portland's anarchists. The ensuing trial would result in the newspaper's closure. Nonetheless, a new intellectual movement had been established, and though the movement would remain small, it would play a disproportionately large role in shaping radical American politics and culture for the next two decades.

This thesis examines how social and economic factors shape the behavior of Russian journalists. Although the state does not practice legal censorship today, Western experts compare Russian media with the Soviet period, and Russia is commonly ranked in the bottom 10% of all countries in terms of press freedom. While scholars identify free press as a necessary condition for a democratic society, Russian media are influenced by flak directed at editors and reporters, which results in self-censorship. The central question is: What is the relationship between the ownership structure ofthe media, a reporter's experience, and the occurrence of self-censorship? A random sample of40 journalists was drawn from ten prominent national newspapers. Interviews focused on instances when reporters had been asked to remove facts critical of the government. The data show that self-censorship is significant in Russian journalism; it comes both from the editors and from the journalists themselves.

Abstract:
This research is premised on the understanding that alternative forms of media emerge to deal with specific ideological projects and, as such, must be seen as satisfying a specific need at a specific point in time. Using the case of a weekly newspaper, The Southern Star which was in circulation from January 2012 to June 2012, this study sought to understand the factors that led to the establishment of the newspaper, what it sought to achieve, how it went about putting that into practice, its message in relation to debates emanating from the ‘Matabeleland Question’ and also the factors that led to the its collapse. In order to address my research questions, I adopted a two stage research design qualitative content analysis and semi structured in depth interviews. In locating the study within the qualitative epistemic understanding of research, it was clear from the qualitative content analysis of 13 editions of the publication and in depth interviews held with 15 respondents that the newspaper was set up with the aim of serving a marginalised section of the population (in this instance the Ndebele) by providing them with a platform to articulate issues affecting them. It also sought to ‘speak’ the ‘unspoken’ within the mainstream media by focusing on Matabeleland identity politics. It achieved this by creating content around the Gukurahundi genocide, Matabeleland development, Matabeleland history and Matabeleland heroes. The newspaper also sought to emancipate the people from the South by advocated for social, cultural, economic and political justice as a resolution to the ‘Matabeleland Question’. However, the newspaper failed to sustain operations due to lack of advertising revenue. As a result of the constraining political environment in which the newspaper operated, potential advertisers were afraid of placing advertisements in the newspaper because of the nature of the content produced, which in view of Zimbabwe’s rival ethnic history, could easily be labelled ethnically divisive. Also, being a new player in the market worked to their disadvantage as prospective advertisers opted to place their adverts in “tried and tested” publications (Zimpapers and Alpha Media Holdings). Additionally, because of poor management, roles were not clearly defined and hence the newspaper failed to operate as a business enterprise. As noted during interviews with junior reporters, there was little or no experience at management level. The paper lacked a coordinated circulation strategy and from inception, was never officially launched, which resulted in the failure to reach significant audiences.

Abstract:
Red Pepper has been the subject of much discussion in Uganda, with some accounts describing it as a liberal mouthpiece, and others as pornography. This case study, therefore, sought to investigate Red Pepper as a media phenomenon in Uganda in the 21st century, specifically between 2001 and 2004. Employing quantitative and qualitative methodologies, it focused on the production process and the text. Although sexualised content dominate its pages, and news about issues such as the environment and education are near-absent, its managers describe the publication as legitimate, normative and consistent with liberal media standards. Accordingly, to interrogate Red Pepper in terms of its journalistic functions, selected debates associated with liberal approaches to news media, media political economy, tabloidisation, pornography and gendered relations were reviewed. The analysis entailed five phases. The first was a denotative or descriptive analysis, which focused on the publication's structure and content focus. This was followed by an interview with management, a broad content analysis to establish the incidence of predefined content categories expected of the tabloid, pornographic and liberal press and, lastly, a theme-based content analysis that sought to establish the potential meanings and framing of the dominant content categories of gossip and sexualised copy. Overall, the study found Red Pepper to be a misogynistic tabloid, having elements said to belong to pornography and homophobia. According to the findings, not only does Red Pepper fall short of a liberal understanding of a newspaper in terms of diversity of topics, provision of information and professional practice, it also does not fit the understanding of an alternative public sphere, mainly because it fails to challenge the patriarchal framing of sex, sexuality and gendered relations. This framing is undertaken deliberately as a means to securing economic rather than journalistic ideals to which the editors pay lip service. Consequently, the gossip and sexualised content are not problematised and as such discourses and power relations therein are not interrogated. Neither are inadequacies in local systems addressed nor corrective action mobilised as expected of some tabloids. All in all, the publication fronts superficial entertainment content that echoes particular gender constructions and patriarchal commonsense and entrenches the (undesirable) status quo which, ironically, it claims to challenge.

Resumo: Trata-se de descrever o processo de constituição da paisagem cultural do município de Caldas (MG) e suas freguesias, tendo como elemento provocador os jornais locais, de 1875 a 1888, período em que há pouco ou nenhum registro da memória dos habitantes da região. Os jornais apresentavam os pontos de vista das pessoas mais influentes daquela comunidade. Neste trabalho, os periódicos são os espelhos através dos quais se quer enxergar a ordenação do território. Esse lugar foi interpretado através dos olhares de redatores e editores, e assim pode revelar a realidade ou uma distorção da mesma, o que não invalida o seu conteúdo, mas sim ressalta a influência destes personagens agentes. O objetivo deste projeto é fazer a leitura do processo de constituição da paisagem cultural e da ordenação deste território através somente da interpretação dos artigos dos jornais locais, no período proposto. A produção de croquis de mapas a partir do olhar, leitura, interpretação, imaginação, registro e abstração da realidade impressa nos jornais, apresenta-se como resultado desta pesquisa
Abstract: This research describes the process of constituting the cultural landscape of the city of Caldas (MG) and its parishes, through local newspapers, from 1875 to 1888, during which there is little or no record of the memory of the inhabitants of the region . The papers present the views of most influential people of that community. In this work, the journals are the mirrors through which you want to see the sort of territory. This place has been interpreted through the eyes of writers and editors, and so can reveal the reality or a distortion of it, which does not invalidate its contents, but emphasizes the influence of these agent characters. The objective of this project is to read the constitution process of the cultural landscape and the ordination of this territory through only the interpretation of articles in local newspapers, in the proposed period. The production of sketch maps from the look, reading, interpretation, imagination, and abstraction of reality record printed in the newspapers, is presented as a result of this research

Marketing communication activities help customers understand the business, the value that the business places on the market through its products... Marketing communication also helps businesses build relationships, form a nice image in the eyes of customers, as well as create a competitive advantage over rivals. In Vietnam, the development of digital technologies has led to the appearance of various types of new media. To survive, newspaper offices have to build their proper orientation, to meet the needs of readers and have the appropriate communication programs to promote their brand and publications. Thieu Nien Tien Phong newspaper office is no exception to this. Based on the system of basic theories of marketing communications, the subject has gone into research and situation analysis of marketing communications for printed publications in the Thieu Nien Tien Phong newspaper to point out the advantages, and limitations that exist in this activity. Since then, I propose solutions and recommendations to promote and improve marketing communication activities for printed publications in particular and all activities of the Thieu Nien Tien Phong newspaper office in general till 2020, with a vision towards 2025. The findings of the study provide significant scientific and practical meanings: Scientific significance: The results of the study will contribute to marketing communication theories applied to printed publications, which adds to the application of the theory of integrated marketing communications for a newspaper office. Practical significance: The results of the research have major implications on a practical level for the overall development of Thieu Nien Tien Phong newspaper office, as well as for the marketing communication activities of the office. The topic also provides other newspaper offices in Vietnam with the organizationof marketing communication activities.

Most gatekeeping studies involve evaluating journalists and editors with years of media writing experience to determine how they are influenced by gatekeeping forces. While many universities publish a campus newspaper that is written and edited by the students, no research was found analyzing the impact that gatekeeping has on student newspaper publications. Therefore, this study attempted to measure the influence of gatekeeping forces on student reporters and student editors who work on university newspaper publications. Data was collected through a web-based questionnaire that measured the influence of individual and routine gatekeeping forces. A convenient sample size of N = 42 was used to gather information about how students perceived a news story's level of newsworthiness. Results of this study indicated that particular routine forces of news media actions and influences of newsworthiness were more significant than other forces and significant relationships exist among certain individual and routine forces. This study also looked at how news media job titles can determine the level of importance and influence of gatekeeping forces on news stories before reaching the final destination of publishing. Results indicated that significant differences exist in routine gatekeeping forces when compared to university student job title.

AbstractRepresentation is never neutral, especially when it comes to agents devoid of their own voice. As such, wildlife has often been employed as a sort of leverage point, an emotional trigger aimed to deliver a certain message (see e.g., Cronin, 2011). The establishment of the Bavarian Forest National Park (BFNP) coincided with the return of large carnivores to the region, in particular, lynxes. Lynxes are endemic to the area; however, as in many other parts of Europe, the last free-roaming individuals were eradicated in the middle of the nineteenth century. In the past few decades, slowly, lynxes were both reintroduced or came back on their own volition, and that has created a considerable response from the population. There has been extensive coverage of the return of these animals both in local and regional media. Lynxes are also kept in the enclosures of the BFNP to afford visitors an unmediated look at the native charismatic megafauna. In this chapter, I analyse how lynxes have been represented in the local media, the newspaper Grafenauer Anzeiger, and discuss merits and drawbacks of visual analysis research method in understanding the change in attitudes towards these animals’ presence in the BFNP area. For that, I look at the archival and contemporary publications of the newspaper. It has been said that the precondition for people’s understanding of reality lays in fantasy, in imagining things to be true (Bergman, 2013). A visual analysis method can help uncover stories that do not necessarily come to the fore in text, and that, in turn, makes it possible to have a fuller grasp of one’s research object. Andrew Isenberg once said that “[our] representations of wildlife are inescapably expressions of human values” (Isenberg, 2002), and while texts are important in their own regard, visual analysis gives an opportunity to look behind a textual narrative to discern whether what we see of the wildlife corresponds to what we understand.

This paper analyses Velimir Khlebnikov’s early Pan-Slavic and anti-German ideological positions against the background of the Balkan crisis (1908, 1912) and the development of the Neo-Slavophile movement. Furthermore, we illustrate how Khlebnikov’s encounter with Janko Lavrin influenced his linguististic conceptions, which in 1913 led to the publication of a series of articles in the newspaper “Slavyanin”. Finally, we argue that some of these articles already showed a significant shift from his Neo-Slavophile ideas to a new conception, which turns towards the Eurasian continent as the arena for his utopian visions.

AbstractThis chapter offers an overview of changes in Dutch perceptions of, and attitudes toward, same-sex sexuality and the part religion played in them. It discusses landmark events and publications from 1730—when “sodomy” became a public issue—until the present. It describes the evolution of discourse on same-sex sexuality, with special reference to the earliest publications on “homosexuality,” alias “Uranism,” which often referred to religion. In the twentieth century, Roman Catholic and Protestant opposition to homosexual emancipation gradually gave way to sympathy, and in the 1960s some pastors were vocal advocates of acceptance. In the early 1970s, homosexuality became a doctrinal issue, a religious identity marker. Polarization was exacerbated in the late 1970s, which saw the rise of both the gay and lesbian movement and religious fundamentalism. “Discursive associations” between religion—including Judaism and Islam—and homosexuality are brought to light partly by means of quantitative content analysis of newspapers.

The article analyzes the publications of I.A. Bunin in the Paris newspaper “Vozrozhdenie” (Renaissance) in 1925–1927. Bunin published in the “Vozrozhdenie” articles, essays, poems and stories. The most important role in the history of the newspaper was played by the publication of Bunin’s “Okayanny Dni”. If fictional elements may be fixed in the book edition of “Okayanny Dni”, then in the newspaper edition of “Renaissance” it is important both for Bunin and for the newspaper’s editorial office to install on documentary character of Bunin’s “diary”. Bunin’s “Okayanny Dni” and essays are considered in the article in the context of the newspaper policy. Among the stories and poems published in 1925–1927 new versions of pre-revolutionary works prevail. At the same time, it was on the pages of the “Vozrozhdenie” that Bunin’s famous stories such as “Ida” and “Notre-dame de la Garde” were first published.

This study examines publications of the Finljandskaja Gazeta newspaper, issued in Helsinki between 1900 and 1917, concerning literature and writers. These have been classed into a number of thematic groups. The selection of names highlighted in the newspaper, the established literary hierarchy and reviews of works all indicate that the “literary” section was maintained by critics of mediocre ability and conservative views. Their articles were compilatory in nature, relying on other materials, above all from the Novoe Vremja newspaper. The authority of these materials was supported by their publication in the “national” Russian press; that is, they had already been vetted by censors, superiors and other readers.

The research provides a more comprehensive representation of the attitude of the Slovenian Russophiles to the South Slavic peoples, who did not live within the borders of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the specifics of their perception of the major events that took place in the Balkans during the considered period.

The alternative black press grew in popularity and editorial stridency in the 1960s, prompting commercial publishers to try to steer the Black Power Movement into acceptable political channels. Alternative publications included student newspapers, leftist political journals, and organizational newspapers for Black Nationalist groups. The Black Panther and Muhammad Speaks claimed circulations that rivaled the largest commercial newspapers. Alternative editors questioned the value of integration, endorsed armed self-defense, and embraced a Marxist critique of American capitalism and empire. Commercial publishers attempted to advise young sit-in protesters and then tried to define Black Power as the effective use of political power. By the late 1960s, though, they almost universally condemned the Black Panther Party and other militant activists, fearing unneeded provocations would erase significant legislative achievements.

The ways newspapers developed as products for readers was influenced by their costs and financing, forms of ownership and market competition. This chapter explores the economics of print and online news publishing in Britain and Ireland from 1900 to 2018 and examines the patterns of ownership, concentration and competition in the national, regional and local newspaper markets. The chapter explores the relationship between the financing of the press, market competition and ownership patterns showing how these have mutually influenced provision. The chapter integrates original analysis of primary and secondary sources and draws on the author’s research on media and advertising relationships to trace the significance of advertising subsidy for publications, up to contemporary challenges, including falling ad revenues for print, and business responses including advertiser sponsored content. The chapter also provides original table data setting out newspaper ownership and circulation for the period.

Abstract In the eighteenth century, newspapers and the new medium of magazines were of vital importance in British metropolitan culture; this chapter describes the journalistic origins of much of Johnson’s work, and considers his engagement with both modes of publication. His poems, moral essays, political writings, and parliamentary reports first appeared in the periodical press, but not all of this can be usefully considered as journalism. This chapter examines, firstly, the newspaper pieces Johnson wrote as an invited spokesman for various publications, in which he holds journalists to high standards, insisting their work be valued by readers and publishers. Of his work for magazines, which was the medium he clearly preferred, this chapter considers the “Early Lives” for the Gentleman’s Magazine and the book reviews for the Literary Magazine. They deal with topics in which he may be presumed to have an interest, and he energetically tests these workaday genres, attending to method, ascertaining the facts and drawing conclusions only from evidence.

[This Proceedings paper was revised and published in the 2019 issue of the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology, Volume 16] Aim/Purpose: Little is known of the cultural competence or leadership styles of a minority owned newspaper. This autoethnography serves to benchmark one early 1990s example. Background: I focused on a series of flashbacks to observe an African American weekly newspaper editor-in-chief for whom I reported to 25 years ago. In my reflections I sought to answer these questions: How do minorities in entrepreneurial organizations view their own identity, their cultural competence? What degree of this perception is conveyed fairly and equitably in the community they serve? Methodology: Autoethnography using both flashbacks and article artifacts applied to the leadership of an early 1990s African American weekly newspaper. Contribution: Since a literature gap of minority newspaper cultural competence examples is apparent, this observation can serve as a benchmark to springboard off older studies like that of Barbarin (1978) and that by examining the leadership styles and editorial authenticity as noted by The Chicago School of Media Theory (2018), these results can be used for comparison to other such minority owned publications. Findings: By bringing people together, mixing them up, and conducting business any other way than routine helped the Afro-American Gazette, Grand Rapids, proudly display a confidence sense of cultural competence. The result was a potentiating leadership style, and this style positively changed the perception of culture, a social theory change example. Recommendations for Practitioners: For the minority leaders of such publications, this example demonstrates effective use of potentiating leadership to positively change the perception of the quality of such minority owned newspapers. Recommendations for Researchers: Such an autoethnography could be used by others to help document other examples of cultural competence in other minority owned newspapers. Impact on Society: The overall impact shows that leadership at such minority owned publications can influence the community into a positive social change example. Future Research: Research in the areas of culture competence, leadership, within minority owned newspapers as well as other minority alternative publications and websites can be observed with a focus on what works right as well as examples that might show little social change model influence. The suggestion is to conduct the research while employed if possible, instead of relying on flashbacks.

This paper examines an ideologically idealised and a realistic discourse about rural Latvian teachers during the late 1940s and early 1950s, as represented, respectively, in the newspaper Skolotāju Avīze (The Teachers’ Newspaper), and in the memoirs of the former teacher and writer Andrejs Dripe. Dripe’s memoirs date back to the 1990s, when diaries written by him after WWII were published. The texts are analyzed with the discourse-historical approach, with the aim and result being the identification of discourse among and about rural teachers. The newspaper Skolotāju Avīze was established to create a discourse about the global excellence of Soviet teacher which, nonetheless, did include positive and negative evaluation. The basis of this judgement was the extent to which teachers did or did not include themselves in the Soviet educational system and in the processes of Sovietisation. Dripe also divided teachers into positive and negative categories in a discursive manner. His point of view, however, emerges from his and his family’s success in living and surviving in the Soviet system. The evidence suggests that discourse about teachers in such publications as Skolotāju Avīze and Dripe’ memoirs cannot be identified or analysed without the contextual foundations of history, in this case the Stalinist period in Latvia.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to explore the patterns of journalistic treatments for issues of Arab Language in Al Arab Qatari newspaper during the year of 2017. It also seeks to understand the degree to which this journalistic behavior enhances Qatar National identity. The importance of this research, which is funded by Qatar National Research Fund, No. UREP21-095-5-009 is to test the relationship between journalistic practices in relation to coverage of Arabic language issues and national identity. As interdisciplinary research combining Arabic language and journalism studies, its data were gathered by students of Arabic and Mass Communication Departments. The study adopted the descriptive and analytical approach to explore a sample of 841 publications that covered 10 linguistic forms including folk literature, translation, sermon, thought, novel, narration, poetry, story, drama and others as well as 6 editorial forms including investigative report, news report, dialogue, news, article, feature story and others. We analyze both the editorial content and the layout treatment. The results showed a statistical significance in the use of different editorial forms to demonstrate the Arabic language topics in Al Arab Qatari newspaper as well as the use of different layout techniques such as positioning, size, headline style and the accompanying visual elements. Future studies can compare the influence of different journalistic practices on national identity.

Abstract:
Electronic publishing has a particularly significant application as a graphic product in the publication of some products such as books and newspapers that have traditionally been essential products of newspaper printing, book printing and the like. In the electronic publication of newspapers, there are certain templates that are related to the identity of the publisher. There is a number of published and printed editions of newspapers that were published before the introduction of electronic editions. Newspapers stick to tradition and try to transfer printed editions to electronic ones, that is, to do the so-called digitalization. The process of digitization is a complex and extensive work consisting of analysis and proper preparation of the transformation into a bit of a mapped image with the help of reproduction devices, rearranging and arranging data with OCR software, creating metadata, database management and web application development. As current products of graphic production, multimedia appears as a set of different media that affect the human senses. Procedures for digitalization of graphic products with essential elements are necessary, and various software tools are needed for the realization of the process. This paper points out the most important segments of previously mentioned procedures.

Abstract:
The present study analyzes the phenomenon of drug addiction concerning how it is affected by the media and its ways of representing reality. This study aimed to identify articles about drug addiction published in information media of great national circulation, namely VEJA online Magazine, Folha de São Paulo online newspaper and Scielo Brasil website. Leading off from the hypothesis that the influence of media in society impacts the ways of coping with the issue studied. A theoretical survey was then carried out on media productions and social representations, as well as a general concept on drug addiction. The selected time criterion was of five years from January 2016 to December 2020. The research data were treated using the Content Analysis method proposed by Bardin (2011). It was possible to perceive a profile in these publications with regard to their vulnerabilities, such as the use of stigmatizing terms to refer to the drug addict. A great disproportionality between the total number of publications and the number of productions that addressed the topic of drug addiction could be observed in all three information vehicles. All three platforms demonstrated a limited view on the importance of the emotional aspects linked to drug addiction, and on the urgency of attention to the addict's support network. The power of influence that the information media has on social action could be verified. It is recommended that information sources in Brazil make better use of this provision, in addition to the knowledge acquired in Psychology for a better basis and greater range of the required problematizations

Abstract:
The article provides a study of the standard aspect of vocabulary usage in Ukrainian newspaper publications. The language quality in newspaper publications is an important and topical problem. The paper puts special emphasis on the language of the media which needs to be normative. The research is predetermined by the need to establish word meanings (based on the editorial practice), which is not specifically delineated in the reference literature, and to give variants of their proper usage. It is emphasized that the accuracy of word usage depends on the availability, aesthetic impact and effectiveness of newspaper publications. The research analyses proper usage of linguistic expressions in different publications of «DEN’», «DZERKALO TYZHNYA», «EXPRESS» newspapers, particularly the usage of nouns TENSION (napruha), DIFFERENCE (riznytsia), NUMBER (chyslo). Meanings of all these words are not explicitly delineated in the reference literature. There are a lot of doubts about the proper usage of these linguistic expressions in the editorial work. Certain Recommendations regarding the correct usage of researchable forms have been suggested. The analysis of defining dictionaries, translation dictionaries, thesaurus as well as other reference books, is based on the acquired editorial experience, that enables to define the meaning of the lexems TENSION (napruha), DIFFERENCE (riznytsia), NUMBER (chyslo) under the study and to suggest correct compliant forms to the selected examples of their usage in the publications of «DEN’», «DZERKALO TYZHNYA», «EXPRESS» newspapers (over 70 sentence constructions).

Abstract:
In the article of Professor Maryan Zhytaryuk, it is implemented the systematization of publications in the international press of 1930 about Ukraine on the materials of the Lviv newspaper «Dilo». Important political issues, in particular: Bolshevism in Soviet Ukraine, the massacre of the Ukrainian intelligentsia (Union for the Liberation of Ukraine), the interpretation of the «Ukrainian political problem» in European countries were singled out and generalized. The topicality of the article subject follows from the need to supplement the materials on the study of the «Ukrainian question», from the understanding that the interwar period, mainly in the 30s of the twentieth century, is a concentrated historical and political period, that is represented on newspaper and magazine columns. During the decade (30s of the twentieth century) – there were thousands of them. For example, in the newspaper «Dilo» only in the first three months of 1930 we can find more than 100 publications on international subjects. Therefore, the author narrowed the research materials to translated materials in the genres of press round-up, review, digest of publications in the foreign press. The purpose of the article is to focus on Ukrainian issues in the international press based on translations and comments on foreign publications in the newspaper «Dilo» in 1930. The task of the publication is to comprehend the identified texts in the context of geopolitical construction on the eve of World War II; to supplement the history of Ukrainian and foreign journalism and its source base. In the article the author uses the method of scientific study of primary sources found in the special funds of the Scientific Library of LNU. I. Franko, in particular, the bundles of the newspaper «Dilo» for 1930. 252 publications were processed, some of which - in several submissions. Based on scientific summarizing, 15 publications on political issues with the keyword «Ukraine» were selected on the basis of translated sources from foreign media (scientific research method). Actually with the purpose of understanding the raised issues (conceptual analysis) and of preparing some certain conclusions and generalizations (methods of synthesis, induction and deduction) the problem-thematic analysis was used.

Abstract:
The article considers the history, thematic range of expression and a number of authors and publicists of the newspaper «Christian Voice» (with the frequency of a fortnightly). It has been published in Munich by nationally conscious groups of migrants since 1949 as a part of the «Ukrainian Christian Publishing House». The significance of this Ukrainian newspaper in post-Nazi Germany is only partly comprehended in the works of a number of diaspora press’s researchers. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to supplement the scientific information about the «Christian Voice» in the postwar period, in particular, the yearbook for 1957 was chosen as the principal subject of analysis. In the process of writing the article, we used such methods: analysis, synthesis, content analysis, generalization and others. Thus, the results of our study became the socio-political and religious context in which the «Christian Voice» was founded. The article is also a concise overview of the titles of Ukrainian magazines in post-Nazi Germany in the 1940s and 1950s. The thematic analysis of publications of 1957 showed the main trends of journalistic texts in the newspaper and the journalistic skills of it’s iconic authors and publicists (D. Buchynsky, M. Bradovych, S. Shah, etc.). The thematic range of the newspaper after 1959 was somewhat narrowed due to the change in the status of the «Christian Voice» when it became the official newspaper of the UGCC in Germany. It has been distinguished two main thematic blocks of the newspaper ‒ social and religious. Historians will find interesting factual material from the newspaper publications about the life of Ukrainians in the diaspora. Historians of journalism can supplement the bibliographic apparatus in the journalistic and publicistic works of the authors in the postwar period of the newspaper and in subsequent years of publishing. Based upon the publications of the «Christian Voice» in different years, not only since 1957, journalists can study the contents and a form of different genres, linguistic peculiarities in the newspaper articles, and so on.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the analysis of the digital content of publications of one issue of the daily All-Ukrainian newspaper “Den” (March 13-14, 2020). The author aims to identify the main thematic groups of digital designations, as well as to consider cases of justified and unsuccessful use of digital designations. Applying the content analysis method, the author identifies publications that contain numerical notations, determines the number of such notations and their affiliation with the main subject groups. Finds that the thematic group of digital designations “time” (58.6% of all digital designations) is much more dominant. This indicates that timing is the most important task of a newspaper text. The second largest group of digital designations is “measure” (15.8% of all digital designations). It covers dimensions and proportions, measurements of distance, weight, volume, and more. The third largest group of digital signage is money (8.2% of all digital signage), the fourth is numbering (5.2% of all digital signage), and the fifth is people (4.4% of all digital signage). The author focuses on the fact that the digits of the journalist’s text are both a source of information and a catch for the reader. Vivid indicators give the text a sense of accuracy. When referring digital data to the text, journalists must adhere to certain rules for the writing of ordinal numbers with incremental graduation; submission of dates; pointing to unique integers that are combined (or not combined) with units of physical quantities, monetary units, etc.; writing a numerator at the beginning of a sentence; unified presentation of data. This will greatly facilitate the reader’s perception of the information.

Abstract:
The subject of the study is the ideological, financial, economic and socio-social conditions of the publishing house and the editorial board of the magazine “New Pathway” Winnipeg period 1941-1977. The main objectives is to determine the peculiarities of the conditions of publishing a Ukrainian magazine in exile, which provides for the systematization and introduction into scientific circulation of factual material on creative and material activities of the “New Pathway” and socio-political environment that influenced the information and ideological and business policy of the publication. The basis of the research methodology is axiological, cultural, systemic approaches; methods of historicism, analysis, synthesis, generalization were used. The study provides not only a description of the historical path of the publication in this period, but also the reasons for miscalculations and successes, both financial and economic and socio-political, which allowed not only to stay in the information field and market for more than ninety years, technical circumstances of its existence, the political struggle in the new wave of emigration after World War II, changes in demographic and linguistic situation among the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada. The reasons for the situational increase and decrease in the activity of the publication’s subscribers were identified; the mechanisms of expanding the readership, attracting new readers and authors are analyzed; confirmed that the efforts of editors and directors of the publishing house at the initial stage of the Winnipeg period created and strengthened the material and technical base of the publishing house, conducted advertising campaigns and direct work to attract new subscribers and readers; The significance of the study is that for the first time in Ukraine the information about the Winnipeg period of the Ukrainian-Canadian weekly “New Pathway”, its financial and financial problems and creative and editorial successes was analyzed and summarized, thus filling another page in the history of Ukrainian diaspora periodicals.

In this article considered Journalistic and editorial activity of Volodymyr Lenika (14.06.1922–02.11.2005) – one of the leading figures of Ukrainian emigration in Germany. First outlined basic landmarks of his life and creation. Journalistic and editorial activity of Volodymyr Lenik was during to forty years out of Ukraine. In the conditions of emigration politically zaangazhovani Ukrainians counted on temporality of the stay abroad and prepared to transference of the created charts and instituciy on native lands. It was or by not main part of conception of liberation revolution of elaborate OUN under the direction of Stepan Banderi, and successfully incarnated in post-war years. Volodymyr Lenik, executing responsible commissions Organization, proved on a few directions of activity, which were organically combined with his journalistic and editorial work. As an editor he was promotorom of creation and realization of models of magazines «Avangard», «Krylati», «Znannia», «Freie Presse Korespondenz», newspapers «Shliakh peremogy». As a journalist Volodymyr Lenik left ponderable work, considerable part of which entered in two-volume edition «Ukrainians on strange land, or reporting, from long journeys». Subject of him newspaper-magazine publications directed on illumination of school, youth, student, cultural, scientific problems, organization and activity of emigrant structures, political fight of emigration, to dethronement of the antiukrainskikh Moscow diversions and provocations. Such variety of problematic of works of V. Lenika was directed in the river-bed of retaining of revolutionary temperament in the environment of diaspore, to bringing in of it to activity in public and political life. Problematic of him is systematized publicism and journalistic appearances, which was inferior realization of a few important tasks, namely to the fight for Ukrainian independence in new terms, cherishing and maintainance of national identity, counteraction hostile soviet propaganda. On an example headed Volodymyr Lenikom a magazine «Knowledge» some aspects are exposed him editorial trade.

Abstract:
For the first time, one of the popular children’s magazines of the Western Ukrainian Diaspora “Young Friends” became the subject of research. Founded in March 1955, it ceased to exist in 1984. There is no complete filing of this newspaper in any book collection of Ukraine, it has not been digitized yet, the editorial office did not have a site. For this reason, the author conducted a study of this journal in the library-archive of the Union of Ukrainians in Great Britain (UUB) in London. The peculiarities of journal formation and the specifics of the editorial policy are clarified. The experience of publishing a Ukrainian children’s magazine abroad for a long time (in color and on chalk paper) without any financial support from the state, but only by public money, is quite instructive for the current situation in Ukraine when children’s periodicals have almost disappeared from the national information space due to indifferent contemplation of the state.

Review question / Objective: To elucidate the literature available regarding the nutritional status and feeding behavior in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Condition being studied: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent challenges in social interaction, speech, nonverbal communication, and repetitive/restrictive behavior. Eligibility criteria: Children from the MENA region diagnosed with ASD, of both genders, ages 2-19 years. Outcomes reporting either anthropometrics, serum nutrient levels, nutrient intakes, and/or feeding behaviors. Other inclusion criteria include the availability of full-length published articles in either English or Arabic. Articles presented in conferences, magazines, or newspapers are excluded. If the data are reported in more than one publication, the more recent is included.

Abstract:
The subject of the study is the cooperation of S. Efremov with Western Ukrainian periodicals as a page in the history of Ukrainian journalism which covers the relationship of journalists and scientists of Eastern and Western Ukraine at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. Research methods (biographical, historical, comparative, axiological, statistical, discursive) develop the comprehensive disclosure of the article. As a result of scientific research, the origins of Ukrainocentrism in the personality of S. Efremov were clarified; his person as a public figure, journalist, publisher, literary critic is multifaceted; taking into account the specifics of the memoir genre and with the involvement of the historical context, the turning points in the destiny of the author of memoirs are interpreted, revealing cooperation with Western Ukrainian magazines and newspapers. The publications ‘Zoria’, ‘Narod’, ‘Pravda’, ‘Bukovyna’, ‘Dzvinok’, are secretly got into sub-Russian Ukraine, became for S. Efremov a spiritual basis in understanding the specifics of the national (Ukrainian) mass media, ideas of education in culture of Ukraine at the end of XIX century, its territorial integrity, and state independence. Memoirs of S. Efremov on cooperation with the iconic Galician journals ‘Notes of the Scientific Society after the name Shevchenko’ and ‘Literary-Scientific Bulletin’, testify to an important stage in the formation of the author’s worldview, the expansion of the genre boundaries of his journalism, active development as a literary critic. S. Yefremov collaborated most fruitfully and for a long time with the Literary-Scientific Bulletin, and he was impressed by the democratic position of this publication. The author’s comments reveal a long-running controversy over the publication of a review of the new edition of Kobzar and thematically related discussions around his other literary criticism, in which the talent of the demanding critic was forged. S. Efremov steadfastly defended the main principles of literary criticism: objectivity and freedom of author’s thought. The names of the allies of the Ukrainian idea L. Skochkovskyi, O. Lototskyi, O. Konyskyi, P. Zhytskyi, M. Hrushevskyi in S. Efremov’s memoirs unfold in multifaceted portrait descriptions and function as historical and cultural facts that document the pages of the author’s biography, record his activities in space and time. The results of the study give grounds to characterize S. Efremov as the first professional Ukrainian-speaking journalist.
