Abstract:
News media possess an orchestrating, manipulating power over the public debate; they create the framework in which we discuss events and learn about ourselves and our surroundings. At the same time, news products provide much of our foundation for knowing about the world we inhabit. However, we lack empirical knowledge about the process of writing news texts, i.e. knowledge about the choices made by journalists as to what to communicate and how to communicate it, in other words, the decisions they make as regards content and linguistic form, respectively. Revisions made during writing yield insights into the progression of a text, providing a signficant element to the understanding of how journalists juggle content and form in their mediation of knowledge. Thus, (NN 2016) of journalists’ revision activity when producing a text. The study was designed as a multiple case study and explored different aspects of revisions occurring during three specific instances of professional text producers’ ordinary writing practices as they unfolded in their natural setting in an editorial office of a major Spanish newspaper. Placing the research agenda at the center and with a view to presenting a description as comprehensive as possible of the revisions made during the writing processes, the study applied a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods, i.e. keystroke logging, participant observation and retrospective interviews. For each journalist, the study investigated the characteristics of the revisions of content and form separately. In this sense, the study examined time of occurrence during the writing process, revision type, such as addition, omission and substitution and the possible relation between timing and revision type. Moreover, the study analysed the distribution of revisions between content and form and the differences between and similarities shared by the three journalists. To operationalise the content-form dichotomy, the analysis builds on Faigley/Witte’s (1981) taxonomy. Accordingly, content revisions add new content or omit existing content that cannot otherwise be inferred from the extant text. By contrast, revisions that only affect the form of the text neither omit nor substitute original content that cannot be inferred from the extant text as it is, nor do they add content that cannot already be inferred. When tracking the text production process as it unfolds in computer-based writing, the continuous revisions made as part of the ongoing text production process become visible to the researcher. At any given point during writing, the written text can be revised at its leading edge, where new text is being transcribed, and in the text already written, i.e. after the text has been transcribed. This distinction between revisions according to their location, i.e. in the text currently being transcribed (pre-contextual revision) or in the text already transcribed (contextual revision) is relevant when the effect of a revision (content or form) is to be interpreted; generally, only the effect of contextual revisions is interpretable on the basis of keystroke logging alone. The approach to the analysis of revisions was inspired by the online revision taxonomy developed by Lindgren/Sullivan (2006a, 2006b) in collaboration with Stevenson/Schoonen/de Glopper (2006). However, the taxonomy proved to be insufficiently accurate to be operationalised, and too coarse to categorise all interpretable revisions in the data. Consequently, a stringent and nuanced analytical framework was developed based on existing theory and the data. This framework places the revisions made during text production on a continuum of semantically meaningful context. At one end of the continuum lies the potentially most complete semantically meaningful context represented by a sentence concluded by a sentence-completing character, and at the other end, the semantically non-meaningful context. In between the two ends, the continuum holds semantically meaningful contexts that are potentially less complete, such as semantically meaningful sentences without sentence-completing characters and semantically meaningful phrases. By introducing an interpretation as to whether a revision is conducted in a semantically meaningful context, the analytical framework distances itself from a more objective categorisation of the location of revisions at the leading edge or in the transcribed text. This allows for a systematisation of the contexts in which the effect of revisions at the leading edge can be interpreted and the contexts in which the effect of revisions made in already transcribed text cannot be interpreted. The exploratory and qualitative nature of the study provided a detailed analysis of the journalists’ revision activities, and it offered nuanced insights into their text production. The results showed a relatively homogenous picture, including certain variations, in which the form of the text was revised significantly more often than the content, both during the ongoing text production and, in particular, during the systematic review of the potentially final text in which content was only infrequently revised. Revision types and their effect on the text during the ongoing text production and in the systematic review of the potentially finalised text reflect the diverging purposes of these two phases: the first phase serves to generate cohesive and coherent text for the article, and the second phase aims to evaluate and, especially, to reduce the volume of the written text. The overall tendency of the analyses and the details which it reflects can be used as the basis for new studies and can help generate hypotheses about how other text producers, both in similar and different contexts, write and revise theirs texts and how they juggle content and form in their democratisation of knowledge.

Abstract:
Abstract As online content has rapidly proliferated in recent years, college teachers may find teaching students how to navigate their way to reputable sources both more challenging and more crucial. When we integrate reading the news into our curricula, we can engage our students, cultivate their critical reading and writing skills, harness digital tools and sources, and teach students how to transfer those skills to academic writing and other endeavors. To fight fake news, students must learn to interrogate sources and writing in the news, thereby empowering them to read, discuss, and engage with contemporary and real-world problems with compassion, complexity, and nuance.

Abstract:
This paper presents an overview of 150 years of accident news writing as presented in the Sydney Morning Herald, with the aim of uncovering the genesis of the ‘hard’ news story, and locating the practice of news writing in its historical context. This overview will serve as a grounding for a discussion of current news writing practices in general. Parallels will be suggested between the nature of accident stories on the one hand, and the role and concerns of the print media in modern industrial society on the other. The paper concludes that ‘hard’ news writing is concerned with the recontextualization of socially ‘destabilizing’ events (Iedema, Feez and White 1995), as well as with the rendering relevant of these recontextualizations to a diffuse and generalised media audience.

Abstract:
This study examines the journalistic discourse in American trade publications toward a storytelling format, competitive in contemporary daily papers, which has long been considered as not appropriate for objective news writing. Thomas Kuhn’s concept of ‘paradigm’ was employed in examining and analyzing narrative discourse in trade journals. The outcome of text-analysis revealed that assenters in narrative news writing outnumbered the dissenters; narrative upholders have vividly attempted to construct a friendly perspective toward a storytelling format by eulogizing the prose style, battering the old form of news production, and distancing the previous literary movement from contemporary narrative news writing. The author concludes that the change of journalistic perception toward the narrative style documents the hierarchical relationship between the occupational ideology and the market ideology within which the journalistic paradigm of news writing can be modified and replaced when the established one — the inverted pyramid news writing — fails to satisfy the concerns of the media industry.

Abstract:
Free-form satire, emancipated from strictly Horatian / Juvenalian models, and organized around a poetic “I”, distant, critical or even indignant before a changing world, played an important role in the emergence of news writing in Early Modernity, leading to the onset of the periodical press in the 17th century. In order to reflect on the connection between Early Modern information media, and satirical or militant writing, the idiom “fake news”, while seemingly incongruous at first, is in fact particularly useful, as it helps establish a connection with our contemporary practices, such as incorrect news, ideologically-oriented publications, clickbaits, and ironic parodies. By comparing these apparently heterogeneous phenomena, it becomes possible to think, in a coordinated way, about three aspects of the exchanges and hybridization that took place between Early Modern “occasionnels” (short, topical brochures) and “libelles” (satirical or libellous tracts). Like contemporary “fake news”, a term often used by purveyors of equally debatable reports to decry doubtful information produced by the opposing camp, libelles were always entangled in a network of other libelles, ever expending due to the indignation caused by the enemy’s lies. Libelles imitated news writing, feeding on rumors, and led to demystifications that often doubled as critiques of the codes of topicality found in the occasionnels. In certain ways, such criticism contributed to the creation of these codes, by pushing back against them. The forms taken by this satire of ideologically-oriented, or militant news writing went beyond partisan intent; it was sometimes difficult, as it is nowadays on certain satirical websites or social media accounts, to distinguish between activist creative writings, and playful games of wit. At a deeper level, satirical esthetics, whether grotesque (referring to the whole period) or burlesque (referring to its end), could instigate a global exercise of incredulity or unbelief towards the religious and political foundations of the Ancien Régime. On account of such a meta-reflexive dimension, of its great diversity linked to its hybridization of news writings, of its oscillation between partisan and playful humour, depending on the readership’s liking and the publishing industry’s interests, libelle referred to changeable forms quite similar to the fickle realities the moniker fake news refers to nowadays. Conversely, the libelle invites us not to hastily reject one aspect or another of the current network, which might be more homogeneous than it seems at first sight.

Abstract:
Liking adverbials (LAs) play a very important role in discourse cohesion. This study examines the frequency and usage patterns of English LAs (110 in total) across five registers (Spoken English, Academic Writing, Fiction, News Writing, and Other writings) in the BNC. While the data analyses offer support for some previous research results, they also yield new findings regarding, among other things, variations in the adverbials’ frequency distribution and usage patterns across the five registers. For example, while fiction’s overall use of LAs is much lower than that of speaking and academic writing, its use of the sequential type of LAs is actually higher than the latter registers’. Also although news has the lowest overall LA frequency among the five registers, it boasts the highest use of LAs that express simultaneity (e.g. meanwhile). Besides discussing new findings, the paper also addresses their implications for language description, learning, and teaching.

Abstract:
Several studies show media messages activate or exacerbate racial stereotypes. This analysis, however, may be the first to examine which types of information—those that directly contradict media messages (i.e., crime-related) or general news (i.e., non-crime-related)—are most effective in abating stereotypes. Its findings suggest fear of crime is becoming more a human fear, not just a racial one. Furthermore, it suggests that for younger Americans, the concomitant dyad of the black criminal stereotype—race and crime—is fueled more by crime than by race.

Abstract:
Historically feature writers occupied a privileged, often protected, position in a newsroom. While news reporters were required to produce copy to a tight deadline, the feature writer had the luxury of time in which to craft a well-researched and argued piece. Today, that is rarely the case. Feature writers are no longer inured from every day newsroom pressures. They’re expected to produce news as well as features, a reality which has contributed to a decline in the quality of longer form journalism. While technology has promoted greater interactivity among writer and audience, or content producer and audience in the case of online features, the focus and scope of features has changed immeasurably.

Language combinations in news writing have an impact on the development of socio-cultural, informational sources, education, entertainment, key points in the arena of political communication, democratic participation, ideological value communication, norms, nature, and beliefs on an issue. Therefore, this study uses the Critical Discourse Analysis approach (CDA) which emphasizes Critical Metaphor Analysis (CMA) elements to examine the use of language and phrases formed by journalists in writing news on government policy, especially the Government Transformation Program (GTP). The data used in this study were taken from three online newspapers namely Malaysiakini newspaper, Berita Harian, and Utusan Malaysia. The use of metaphorical concepts and metaphors is fully utilized to refine terms in the words, phrases, and sentences written by journalists of these three media organizations. The findings show that journalists are aware and unconscious of writing metaphorical writing and setting the concept metaphor by framing the news they have written. The conceptualized metaphor is clearly displayed in every news writing because they have an agenda set by their respective media organizations to promote or provide understanding on government policies especially in relation to the GTP and the National Key Result Area (NKRA). Their behavior and processes produce stories that have implicit meaning by using metaphors to produce strategic news. The resulting metaphors are different but coherent to confirm the GTP and NKRA as the carriers of positive economic change to the country. Implicitly pointing out that GTP and NKRA need to be implemented if Malaysia wants to become a developed nation. It gives implied meaning because it is not said directly but indirectly through the metaphor.

Abstract:
Employing emotive words in news writing is one of the most common strategies in today’s newspaper reporting. Emotive words are usually used in writings to evoke readers’ emotion on the subject. It is important for a reader to be aware of this phenomenon so they would not be easily manipulated by provoking news articles. However, in Malaysia where the news media is still being controlled strictly by regulations and ethics, are emotive words the commonly employed strategy by journalists? This study intends to discover the usage of emotive words in news reporting in Awani News. The data for this study are the ‘viral’ news articles on one of the social media, Twitter. The tweets with mass number of engagements were taken and the article from the link attached with those tweets were analysed. From the analysis, the researcher found that generally, Awani News was able to keep their objectivity in reporting the news article but not in the headlines. However, there were also some instances where the news channel used emotive words heavily in their news reporting. Out of 14 news articles analysed, there were 13 headlines that contained emotive words/phrases and 32 emotive words/phrases within the news articles. But, the employment of emotive words in the news articles is not even as there are news articles that have 9 emotive words/phrases and there are also news articles that do not contain any of them.

Abstract:
This study uses an experiment to analyze how mainstream journalism’s use of tabloid writing techniques affects online credibility. Participants read four news stories and rated their credibility using McCroskey’s Source Credibility Scale. Participants found stories written with a tabloid style less credible than more traditional stories. Tabloidized soft news stories were more credible than tabloidized hard news stories. Results suggest that online news media may damage their credibility by using tabloidized writing techniques to increase readership. Furthermore, participants were less likely to enjoy stories written in a tabloidized style. An application of act utilitarianism suggests that tabloidization is an unethical method for increasing news readership.
