Van, Dam Brooke. "The distinctive nature of making news online : a study of news production at latimes.com and salon.com." Thesis, City University London, 2010. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/1183/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides an inside, in-depth look at how journalists at latimes.com and salon.com came together to create content for their websites over a six month period. It vividly unveils the process of newsmaking by journalists working for organisations whose output is the world wide web. It uses mixed method case studies of two US-based news websites, latimes.com and salon.com, to show how both parentage and net native sites construct a news story. The case studies include direct observation, in-depth interviews and content analysis to deconstruct the process of covering the 2008 Presidential election. The thesis works around Brian McNair‘s cultural chaos paradigm (2006) which explains the emergent nature of news online and the lack of control by any environmental factors that seek to affect its outcome. The thesis begins by outlining the four crucial changes which occur online that are redefining major tenets of journalism both practically and theoretically. It goes on to explain not only how online news has become a destination for many around the world but also why these two online news websites have found a niche for themselves on the Web. The findings of this research outline not only how the newsmaking process exists in these two environments but also how they are creating a new type of convotelling journalism. The 2008 US Presidential election is used as a story to show the unstructured and chaotic network that now exists in how news is gathered, produced, and disseminated online. It goes on to explain the multitude of changing relationships journalists are grappling with as this convotelling newsmaking process occurs. The contrast between the net native and parentage website is dissected to show just how the two sites vary even though their goal is similar. The research concludes making an argument for a hybrid model of journalism being done online that is distinctive in nature.

Gattermann, Katjana. "News about the European Parliament : patterns and drivers of broadsheet coverage." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2011. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/433/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is about broadsheet coverage of the European Parliament (EP). More precisely, it studies the amount and content of news referring to the EP as well as the professional attitudes of their producers. The main purpose of the thesis is to explain variation in the press coverage. Thereby it combines political communication research with the European integration literature discussing the legitimacy of the EP. It argues that cross-country and inter-temporal variation cannot be explained by factors internal to news production alone. Instead, national parliamentary traditions impact profoundly on the way EU parliamentary affairs are reported. The thesis employs a mixed-methods research design. It conducts a quantitative content analysis of 18 broadsheets published in six European countries – Ireland, the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, Germany and Austria – over three time periods: one is a routine period of two years; the remaining two datasets are oriented at key issues and events over time. In total, 3956 newspaper articles are analysed. In addition, 18 in-depth interviews with the respective Brussels correspondents and a director at the EP Directorate-General for Communication complement the findings. While the EP receives regular coverage, the thesis finds that news are selected and presented according to the interest of the audience. Hence the domestic angle prevails in the news coverage and the EP’s own prominence and potential to generate conflict attract media attention more often when major issues are at stake. However, domestic relevance is not the only explanatory factor. While newsmakers also respond to varying levels of public support for EU membership, the thesis identifies national parliamentary traditions as a strong external driver of EP news coverage. Here, procedural characteristics and public expectations shape the amount and content of EP news as well as newsmakers’ attitudes – and more significantly so with the rising powers of the Parliament.

Kenny, Peter. "News agencies as content providers and purveyors of news: A mediahistoriographical study on the development and diversity of wire services." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/1616.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil (Journalism))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
This study examines the history, development and diversity of news agencies. It studies the major agencies and pinpoints how smaller wire services that sometimes purvey niche news seek to offer a more diverse global news-flow. The linkage between news agencies and technological developments, and how wire services have helped advance technology, is examined since the first agencies began in the 1800s, up to the current era of the Internet. The rise of television and the subsequent ascent of the Internet prompted new demands for more diverse news procurement. This accelerated the convergence of different media and has exposed challenges and opportunities to news agencies, large and small. Alongside the telegraph, news wire services expanded from supplying news and information locally to being global players, helping the world shrink. The mediahistoriographical approach engages a critical examination of literature sources regarding the development of the major wire services, and some of the smaller players. The literature, along with interviews with news agency experts, provides the material to examine wire services. The study shows how some original agencies leveraged opportunities offered by their standing in powerful nations to become dominant transnational players. The ascendancy of the mega-agencies compounded limited news-flows from developed to poorer nations, while an expansion of diversified news-flows has not matched technological progression. This study concludes by recommending greater recognition of the importance of news agencies and more scholarly examination of them, as studies on them appear scarce compared to those on other media branches, such as newspapers, the electronic media and the Internet. More studies into the development of both mainstream and alternative news agencies would pave the way for a better understanding of how they function and could provide clues as to how they might be able to better sustain themselves as more diverse entities for the benefit of the public discourse. Through the above, this dissertation seeks to contribute, in a small way, to rectifying a knowledge disparity regarding a key component of the mass media, namely the news agency.

Wills, Samuel Edward. "Macroeconomic policy in resource-rich economies." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2013. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:a7050812-cec5-47f6-912b-d00252c3d69f.

Abstract:
This thesis considers how fiscal and monetary policy should be conducted in resourcerich economies. It consists of three papers addressing: whether governments should spend, save or invest volatile oil income; the assets they should save in; and how monetary policy should respond. The first, “Eight principles for managing resource wealth”, shows that capital-scarce countries should save relatively less against oil price volatility, and invest more in domestic capital. They also should prepare for volatility in advance, and treat savings as a source of income rather than a temporary buffer. To show this the paper develops a framework that nests a variety of existing results, which are presented in eight principles. The second, “The Elephant in the Ground: Oil extraction and asset allocation in sovereign wealth funds”, shows that governments should use sovereign wealth funds to offset oil price risk, extract oil faster if its price is pro-cyclical, and use precautionary savings to manage any residual volatility. To do this it combines three strands of literature for the first time: on continuous-time portfolio theory, oil extraction and precautionary savings. The third, “Optimal monetary responses to oil discoveries”, addresses the anticipation effects around an oil discovery. It shows that the terms of trade will need to appreciate twice: once when oil is discovered and consumers anticipate future revenues; and again when the government begins spending the revenues. Oil wealth will give the monetary authority an incentive to appreciate the terms of trade, in addition to stabilising domestic inflation and the output gap. Optimal policy is well-approximated by a standard monetary rule that also responds to expected changes in the natural level of output.

Hurriyetoglu, Ali. "Tense, Aspect And Mood Based Event Extraction For Situation Analysis And Crisis Management." Master's thesis, METU, 2012. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12614296/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Nowadays event extraction systems mainly deal with a relatively small amount of information about temporal and modal qualifications of situations, primarily processing assertive sentences in the past tense. However, systems with a wider coverage of tense, aspect and mood can provide better analyses and can be used in a wider range of text analysis applications. This thesis develops such a system for Turkish language. This is accomplished by extending Open Source Information Mining and Analysis (OPTIMA) research group'
s event extraction software, by implementing appropriate extensions in the semantic representation format, by adding a partial grammar which improves the TAM (Tense, Aspect and Mood) marker, adverb analysis and matching functions of ExPRESS, and by constructing an appropriate lexicon in the standard of CORLEONE. These extensions are based on the theory of anchoring relations (Temü
rcü
, 2007, 2011) which is a cross-linguistically applicable semantic framework for analyzing tense, aspect and mood related categories. The result is a system which can, in addition to extracting basic event structures, classify sentences given in news reports according to their temporal, modal and volitional/illocutionary values. Although the focus is on news reports of natural disasters, disease outbreaks and man-made disasters in Turkish language, the approach can be adapted to other languages, domains and genres. This event extraction and classification system, with further developments, can provide a basis for automated browsing systems for preventing environmental and humanitarian risk.

Abstract:
Aquestes narracions periodístiques pertanyen als informatius de migdia dels dies 16 i 17 de juliol de 2001 i 5 i 6 d'abril de 2004 corresponents a vuit emissores catalanes, Catalunya Informació, Catalunya Ràdio, COM Ràdio, COPE Catalunya, Ona Catalana, Onda Rambla, Ràdio 4 i SER Catalunya.
The object of this study is the auditory resources used in radio news programs to illustrate the news. By auditory resources, we intend all auditory material, music, voice cuts, ambiental sounds, sound effects and silences which serve the narration of the news, accompanying the words of the journalist and even in some cases replacing them. The main aim of this research is to demonstrate that, apart from voice cuts, radio journalists of Catalan radio stations under-employ these auditor resources when constructing their narrations of reality. For this purpose, we analyze 529 news stories in order to verify the presence or absence of auditory resources. These journalistic narrations are from the midday news programs of the days of the16th and 17th of July, 2001 and the 5th and 6th of April, 2004 and have been provided by eight Catalan radio stations, Catalunya Informació, Catalunya Ràdio, COM Ràdio, COPE Catalunya, Ona Catalana, Onda Rambla, Ràdio 4 and SER Catalunya.

Worsfold, Adrian John. "New denominationalism : tendencies towards a new reformation of English Christianity." Thesis, University of Hull, 1988. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:11844.

Full text
Abstract:
The tensions which had over hundreds of years built up in the Roman Catholic Church produced the first Reformation. In England the new Anglican Church could not hold together all its elements, and the Great Ejection of 1662 saw the real beginning of separate denominations. Today another realignment is taking place. In an environment of indifference to churchgoing the Churches must respond. But they are divided within. Some elements desire to convert the world, others wish to defend the Church from it, a number want to absorb the world and others wish to combine these approaches. The differences relate to viewpoints about belief and authority. Historical techniques, scientific knowledge and philosophical models have affected the understanding of the Church, the Bible and models of belief. The result is that liberalism, once outside subscribing denominations, has returned to them. This has created further strains with those of biblical and Church beliefs and authority views. A new holiness movement is sweeping the Churches. A revivalist spirit calling on interpreted individual experience is spreading across Catholic and Protestant structures. This has created both new unity and divisions. Behind the desires for ecumenism, the result within denominations is renewed tension between 'independency' and the 'broad Church'. New denominationalism, the realignment of belief and authority patterns, threatens to become a New Reformation, a structural change resulting from alliances and schism.

Zhu, Xudong. "New players and new interactions within the natriuretic peptide system : mechanisms and pathophysiological consequences." Thesis, University of Hull, 2012. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:14364.

Full text
Abstract:
The natriuretic peptide system plays a pivotal role in the regulation of cardiorenal homeostasis as well as in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. In this thesis, the biological effects of the newly designed natriuretic peptide (NP) ACNP and mechanisms of the interaction between natriuretic peptide receptor A (NPRA) and B (NPRB) are elucidated. The receptor profiles of different BNPs and degradation profile of hBNP1-42 are also investigated. ACNP stimulates both NPRA and NPRB and thus is more potent and effective compared to human ANP or CNP in stimulating cGMP in primary cells in vitro. In sham-operated mice, 4-week treatment with ACNP exerted similar potency in lowering blood pressure compared to that of ANP or CNP. However, ANP, but not ACNP, ameliorated the myocardial infarction-induced left ventricular dysfunction. The lack of benefit of ACNP might relate to its fast degradation by a still unknown enzyme in mouse serum. The interaction between NPRA and NPRB has been suggested since an impaired cGMP generation upon NP stimulation was observed in NPRA/NPRB co-transfected cells. The inhibitory effect of heterogeneous receptor complexes on natural NP/NPR/cGMP signalling were receptor dose-dependent. The attenuation of the CNP/NPRB/cGMP axis is caused by a blocked formation of NPRB mRNA by NPRA and thus decreasing NPRB quantity on the membrane. The attenuated ANP and BNP signalling may involve conformational changes within the NPRA/NPRB heterodimer, leading to less ligand accessibility or ligand-mediated activation of guanylyl cyclise (GC). Furthermore, different forms of BNP have been studied. The N-terminal truncated BNP (mBNP7-32) and the elongated BNP (mBNP1-45) are able to stimulate NPRA, whereas the C-terminal elongated hBNP1-42 is a poor activator of NPRA. Meanwhile, metabolism of hBNP1-42 on kidney membrane was different to that of lung membrane, suggesting specific peptidase(s) in the kidney being important for renal action of hBNP1-42. Taken together, this thesis gives novel insight into the new players and new interactions in the natriuretic peptide system. It provides potential mechanisms in receptor interplay leading to an impaired cGMP generation. It also opens new directions for the better understanding of cardiovascular diseases and may identify completely new treatment options.

Abstract:
AbstractSlanted news coverage, also called media bias, can heavily influence how news consumers interpret and react to the news. Models to identify and describe biases have been proposed across various scientific fields, focusing mostly on English media. In this paper, we propose a method for analyzing media bias in German media. We test different natural language processing techniques and combinations thereof. Specifically, we combine an IDF-based component, a specially created bias lexicon, and a linguistic lexicon. We also flexibly extend our lexica by the usage of word embeddings. We evaluate the system and methods in a survey (N = 46), comparing the bias words our system detected to human annotations. So far, the best component combination results in an F$$_{1}$$ 1 score of 0.31 of words that were identified as biased by our system and our study participants. The low performance shows that the analysis of media bias is still a difficult task, but using fewer resources, we achieved the same performance on the same task than recent research on English. We summarize the next steps in improving the resources and the overall results.

Abstract:
Abstract Due to the impact of globalization, companies have extended their borders across nations to launch products more competitively. However, globalization affects various uncertainties and risks that may limit the performance of supply chains. Research indicates that models that incorporate uncertainties and risks will help to improve the resilience of global supply chains. In the era of technology, we experience the abundance of textual data from various web-media resources related to companies, which can be deployed to understand the impact of risks on the chain. Accordingly, this study aims to utilize textual data collected from news articles and earnings call transcripts to assess the vulnerability of the suppliers and the chain. Among many, we considered supply chain resource limits as a subcomponent of vulnerability and collected textual data associated with its sub-factors. Then, we proposed an integrated factor analysis and Analytical Network Process (ANP) method to model the company’s supply chain resource limits index. Specifically, factor analysis was used to determine the latent constructs of the variables that are grouped under resource limits and their correlations. This latent construct and correlations were then applied as the interdependencies among variables in the ANP to discover the final importance weights of the variables in terms of supply chain resource limits. The results of the study showed that the shortages of capacity, components, and energy supply are the most critical sub-factors. The company’s supply chain resource limits index (SCRLI) can be further calculated to assist decision-makers of an enterprise in supply chain configuration design, and improve the supply chain resilience.

Abstract:
Abstract An attempt was made to independently verify the proposed performance of the Liza 1 field using only data available in the public domain. The data used in modelling was sourced from news reports, company disclosures and the analogue Jubilee field in Ghana. Reservoir rock and fluid data from Jubilee Field was deemed an appropriate fit because of the corroboration provided by the Atlantic Drift Theory. A major challenge in creating the model, was determining the aerial extent of the field. According to Yang and Escalona (2011), the subsurface can be reasonably approximated using the surface topography which is possible via the use of GIS software. Google Earth Pro software was used to estimate the coordinates and areal extent of the Liza 1 reservoir. A scaled image of the field location showing the Guyana coastline was re-sized to fit the coastline in Google Pro and then the coordinates for the Liza field and wildcat well locations were estimated. This was used to create the isopach map and set reservoir boundaries to create the static and dynamic models in Schlumberger's Petrel E & P Software Platform (2017) and Computer Modelling Group IMEX Black Oil and Unconventional Simulator CMG IMEX (2016). The initialized model investigated the reservoir performance with and without pressure maintenance over a twenty (20) year period. The original oil in place (OOIP) estimated by the model was 7% larger than the OOIP estimated by ExxonMobil for Liza field. The model produced 35% of the OOIP compared to 50% of OOIP as forecasted by the operators. (See Table 1). The factors that strongly influenced this outcome were, the well positioning and the water injection rates. A significant percentage of the oil remained unproduced in the lower layers of the model after the 20-year period. Time did not permit further modelling to improve the performance of the model. Table 1 Comparison of The Created Model and ExxonMobil's Proposal for Liza. Property ExxonMobil's statement on Liza field Modelled field Result Original Oil in Place (MMbbl) 896 967 Oil Recovery Factor (%) 50 35 Gas production from the model would be used as gas injection from three injector wells and as fuel for the proposed 200 MW power plant for Guyana. Even so, significant volumes of natural gas remained unallocated and subsequently a valuable resource may have to be flared.

Abstract:
In Product Development (PD), there is an inherent complexity in deciding what resources should perform which tasks taking into account their effectiveness towards completing the task, while adjusting to their availabilities. The right resources must be applied to the right tasks in the correct order. In this context, process modeling and simulation could aid in resource management decision making. However, most approaches define resources as elements needed to perform the activities without defining their characteristics, or use a single classification such as “designers”. Despite their crucial importance to the delivery of the product, resources such as computational hardware, software, testing resources, amongst others have been overlooked during process planning stages. This paper presents a new method to model different resource types (designers, computational, testing) and studies the impact of using different options of those resources by simulating the model and analyzing the results. Thus, the new approach, which extends a task network model with Bayesian Networks (BN), allows testing the influence of using different resources on process performance. The method uses BN within each task to model different instances of resources that carries out the design activities (computational, designers and testing) along with its configurable attributes (time, risk, learning curve etc.), and tasks requirements. Thus, activity behavior is shaped depending on the chosen resource option to perform it. The approach enhances the capability to explore resource combination design space. It was applied to an aerospace case study to identify insights such as the best performing resource combinations, critical resources, resource sensitive activities, and the probability of a resource reaching performance targets.

Abstract:
Abstract The problem under consideration is the modeling of manufacturing resources like machine tools, setups and tools which affect the cost and batch delivery time estimation of machined parts. The proposed resource models are built upon Petri net models for process planning and scheduling with three methods: (i) an implicit modeling method where resources are modeled as a data structure which acts on a specific Process Planning Petri net (PP-net), (ii) a first explicit modeling method where resources, are modeled as separated Petri nets whose places are connected to PP-net transitions with adequate arcs and form a Process Planning Cost System (PPC-system) and (iii) a second explicit modeling method where a two-level Petri net model is proposed which allows the modular modeling of process plans and resources. In the later case, integration is achieved through an synchronization mechanism. The first two methods are used for the cost estimation of process plans of unique parts while the third one is used for delivery time and cost estimation of a batch of machined parts.

Abstract:
Until around 1990 Japanese nuclear power generation maintained the world’s top-level safety and high capacity factors. However, repeated accidents and troubles in the latest decade (including those experienced earlier and newly uncovered) caused the capacity factors decline, and simply the regulatory authorities reinforce their rules. Nevertheless, Japan has maintained its nuclear technologies and knowledge by continued constructions of new nuclear power plants (NPP) and the technology and knowledge were handed down and accumulated., while the construction decreased drastically worldwide after the Chernobyl accident in 1986. It should be meaningful to see how Nuclear Knowledge Management (NKM) worked over this period. All 17 nuclear power stations in Japan were visited from January to September 2007 for field survey of maintenance practices, human resources development programs and quality assurance activities. From the analyses of the collected information, the strengths and weaknesses in nuclear knowledge management have been induced. The lessons we concluded are elaborated in the following subjects. • Pluses (+) and minuses (-) of multi-layered structures of nuclear industry: its correlation with NKM (accumulation, preservation and creation of technologies and knowledge); • Technology improvement and knowledge accumulation in the new quality assurance systems; • “Olds” and “News” in transferring technologies and knowledge, and in developing human resources; • Rebuilding of on the job training (OJT) and off the job training (Off - JT): its contents of lessons and training; • Appropriate use of the manuals: to know its usefulness and limits; • Appropriate deployment of the inspection enforcement: incentives and formalities; • Motivation of active information sharing by the adequate intellectual property management; • Lateral development of best practices, and new value creation by the shared knowledge. The Japanese electric utilities and nuclear industry should further advance their information sharing of valuable experiences such as troubles and good practices, and strengthen their self-management. Thus, they will be able to contribute, with their advanced strengths of accumulated/preserved nuclear technologies and knowledge, to meeting the growing needs of new NPP construction worldwide in the Nuclear Renaissance. NKM will in turn be further advanced on the so-called spiral-up track.

Abstract:
Abstract In May 2019, the merger between Wintershall GmbH and DEA Deutsche Erdoel AG was closed, which was the start of Wintershall Dea.This paper provides detailed insight into managing reserves and resource information during this merger. After merger, three resource management activities required attention: (i) combining existing resources reporting, (ii) defining a lean but effective resources management and control system, and (iii) ensuring readiness for Initial Public Offering (IPO) by establishing an external independent evaluation of resources ("external resource audit"). This paper describes objectives, challenges and solutions on reserves and resources reporting of the new company. The merged reserves and resources database of the previous year's reports had to consider audits from two different reporting systems in parallel to four different external auditors. With priorities defined by status of external auditing, operatorship and asset share a common database was derived and could immediately be used for financial transactions such as the issuance of an inaugural bond. The new system for internal reporting of petroleum resources provides a fit-for-purpose approach, such as a consistent interpretation of commerciality criteria or definition of resources sub-classes.Particular attention was paid to synergies with respect to business planning, strategic portfolio analysis, and a link to technology & innovation. By defining specific attributes and sub-processes, the portfolio can be analyzed systematically. This provides additional insights and ensures synergies with business planning, strategic planning as well as internal technology initiatives. A systematic resource control system is defined focusing on internal review, external and internal audits as well as synergetic use of project reviews. Moreover, a feedback loop for continuous improvement of reservoir management allows attending to important audit observations. The external resource audit to ensure IPO readiness was structured to assign tasks for head office, business units and auditing company. The sequence of events from introduction to assets to reconciliation of differences between auditor and company was set-up, executed and monitored.Focus was on the definition of a structured but agile approach for external independent evaluation of all reserves and contingent resources.
