Abstract:
A by-product of today’s hybrid media system is that genres—once uniformly defined and enforced—are now murky and contested. We develop the concept of news-ness, defined as the extent to which audiences characterize specific content as news, to capture how audiences understand and process media messages. In this article, we (a) ground the concept of news-ness within research on media genres, journalism practices, and audience studies, (b) develop a theoretical model that identifies the factors that influence news-ness and its outcomes, and (c) situate news-ness within discussions about fake news, partisan motivated reasoning, and comparative studies of media systems.

Abstract:
This study uses two experimental designs to examine how audiences make genre assessments when encountering media content that blends elements of news and entertainment. Study 1 explores how audiences characterize three different versions of a fictitious political talk show program. Study 2 considers whether audience perceptions of ‘news-ness’ are influenced by shifts in headline angle and source attribution. The implications of audience definitions of news and its social function are discussed.

A national survey of 1,006 respondents found that 70.3% used local TV news as their primary source of news, followed by network TV news, newspapers, and radio news in that order. Use of talk radio, TV magazines, and grocery store tabloids was far less. A factor analysis showed five factors — TV news, radio, print media, computer media, and tabloids.

Abstract:
Today, sentiment analysis is in high use to understand user reactions. In this paper, the authors have discussed this topic using news and Twitter texts as sources of data. They use TextBlob, VADER, and IBM Watson NLU as sentiment analysis tools. The news sentiment analysis data is from January to July 2020, classified under each tool. The authors get almost the same result from all of them. February shows having the maximum negative polarity news, followed by June. While Twitter data of each month when classified under each sentiment analysis tool shows the same kind of result for all the months, March has the maximum negative polarity and maximum positive polarity is seen in January. The aim of this paper is to show that sentiment analysis on newspaper content can help common people to know the bias in newspapers to prevent more negative impact on readers especially during a pandemic like COVID-19. The comparison drawn between the news data sentiment analysis and the same with Twitter data has a good correlation but still shows a difference in sentiment.
