Abstract:
News media businesses compete with search engines and social media networks for advertising revenue but at the same time depend on the latter to reach and interact with audiences. The Digital Platforms Inquiry (DPI) completed by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) found that media businesses’ dependency on digital platforms gives companies like Google and Facebook substantial bargaining power over Australian news media businesses. This development over the past decade has caused negative repercussions for the choice and quality of news available to Australians. In response to thegse findings, Australia’s News Media and Digital Platforms Mandatory Bargaining Code 2021 extends the application of competition law into digital news and advertising markets. The reform is intended to address the impact of digital platforms on the commercial viability of Australian news companies. In this article, we assess the application of competition law to the relationship between news media and digital platforms, including the strength of the DPI findings and the appropriateness of the resulting reforms. We argue that after decades of deregulation of the media sector in Australia the News Media Bargaining Code is a hybrid legislation, which introduces news media industry regulations under the guise of competition law. While we see a continued role for competition law in digital platform markets, this article indicates the challenges posed by digital platforms on media pluralism and the limitations of a market-driven approach to news media policy. news media businesses, digital platforms, advertising, regulation, media policy, Australian competition law, market power, media pluralism, Digital Platforms Inquiry, News Media Bargaining Code

Abstract:
In February 2021 two initiatives for regulating digital platforms in Australia were implemented. The News Media Bargaining Code (“News Code”) attracted international attention as a legislative means of forcing platforms to pay for news content, while the Australian Voluntary Disinformation and Misinformation Code (“Disinformation Code”) was modelled on an international initiative. Both were developed to meet Government policy formulated in response to Australia’s Digital Platforms Inquiry. Whereas the Inquiry recommended the use of co-regulation, Government policy switched to voluntary codes for both, then to a legislative scheme for the News Code. This article examines the schemes and critiques the policy on which they are based. It applies a conceptual framework to assess the optimum conditions for the use of co-regulation and self-regulation. It finds that a self-regulatory scheme of voluntary codes was never a suitable approach for the News Code, and that the close involvement of the regulator on the Disinformation Code — without a suitable remit or enforcement powers — distorts the self-regulatory model. This can in part be explained by the failure to address well-recognised flaws in the co-regulatory framework for telecommunications and broadcasting, the consequences of which are now being seen in attempts to regulate digital platforms.

Abstract:
This research is motivated by the problem of photojournalism that is not in accordance with the rules contained in the Journalistic Code of Ethics. The aim of this research is to find out how the Code of Ethics is applied to the Legal and Criminal News Photo in Jambiupdate.co itself. The research method used is qualitative with data analysis using Charles Sanders Peirce semiotics. The results of the study show that in general there are journalists who are not in accordance with the Code of Ethics. Likewise with the Journalistic Code of Ethics which regulates the ethics of journalists and the media in broadcasting photos in a news story. Jambiupdate.co online media, like other online media, will certainly try to apply the Photojournalism Code of Ethics in every news story, but the implementation is certainly not as easy as expected, because it is the principle of news speed which sometimes does not pay attention to the Code of Ethics itself and the lack of communication between journalists in the field. with the editorial team. In addition, violations of the photojournalism code of ethics are negligence or forgetting to blur photos that contain sadistic elements and the victim or perpetrator is a woman and a minor who is protected by the photojournalism code of ethics law.

Abstract:
Media ethics is a debatable issue among scholars and researchers. This study has examined the media ethics being practiced by Pakistani media outlets through a comparative analysis of defamatory, violence, indecency, hate speech and privacy in the news bulletins (9 pm) of three private news channels i.e. Geo news, ARY news and 24 news over a period of three months. The study also examines if the code of conduct enacted by the Private Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA)had any relevance to these channels. Using the content analysis research technique, the researchers found that each news channel carried indecent, defamatory, violent, hate speech and privacy content in its nine pm news bulletins. ARY news had more instances of defamatory. It was revealed that PEMRA's code of conduct had little relevance to these channels as they were found involved in an overt breach of its regulations.

Research on the publicity strategies of non-governmental organizations suggests that they seek out coverage from the news media. In so doing, they typically adopt traditional news values, thus adapting to the institutional demands of journalism in ways potentially harmful to organizational goals. This study suggests that, while employees do court news coverage through events and strategies designed to capture media attention, they do so strategically. The research presented here draws on institutional theories of organizational behavior to understand the strategic behaviors undertaken. Through participant observation and document analysis of the media relations office at World Vision US, a key player among international development non-governmental organizations, I find evidence that media relations employees engage in strategic practices of bargaining and compliance. These behaviors allow them to work within and beyond given institutional parameters to accomplish organizational goals not aligned with traditional news values.

Abstract:
FR. Based on a semiotic and communicational study of the Agence France-Presse (AFP) exhibition on social networks, this paper examines the ways in which wire service photography has been disrupted and transformed by these means of communication. Faced with a new rhythm of news publication, which the author proposes to call “cenorythmy,” the aim is to show how the AFP has both adapted and metamorphosed its means and codes of publication, to the point of constructing an indicative “We, together and now” tone to its networks. The AFP has thus evolved its representational practices while preserving its editorial strategies. However, the aim is not to study the transformations inherent in the professional practices of AFP photojournalists, such as the bargaining power with news desks, for example. Rather, it is more simply to analyze, on the basis of a corpus gathered from social networks (which represent only a small part of the agency's output), the driving forces behind online exposure. The paper proposes to study this temporal form designated “cenorythmy” in three stages: the stage of the photojournalistic deixis put to the test by social networks; a second stage for the construction of an indicative copresence structuring a homochronous media; and finally, a third stage for a study of daily experience, from the banal* point of view of duration. These three hypotheses follow a participant observation of the social networks in February 2016, completed by a daily capture of data, i.e. photographic publications by the AFP on four social networks (four “feeds”): Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr. Finally, the author shows that in the face of the strategies imposed by social networks, the AFP has publicly re-established its core way of being: the continuous regularization of news, which it has deployed since the golden era of wire services. *** PT. ***

Abstract In June 2015 Gawker Media became the first for-profit digital news organization to unionize its editorial workforce. True to their bombastic style, they did so publicly, publishing a post where staff commented on how they were going to vote regarding the union and why. This article examines the ensuing discussion to understand how this group of culture workers perceived their labor, and the value they sought not just from collective bargaining, but from doing so publicly. Gawker’s unionization was aimed not exclusively at Gawker, but spoke to a vision for the entire sector. Gawker staff were motivated to collective action by the precarity that besets digital media, while the publicness of the effort was aimed at their peer organizations. The public performance of unionism at Gawker may signal a shift in the discourse around collective bargaining among young creative workers as more digital outlets come to organize their workforce.

AbstractCredibility is frequently represented as both an ideal goal for journalism as a profession and as an integral part of the news industry’s survival strategy. Yet there is no widely accepted operationalization of the concept of credibility. In the current article, we present the results of a study of credibility in Danish news media. Credibility is defined at an institutional level by two dimensions: A) the accuracy and reliability of the news stories featured in leading Danish news media, and B) journalists’ knowledge and understanding of the Danish code of press ethics. The results show that sources only find objective errors in 14.1% of the news stories, which is a lower figure than most other studies report. The results also show that Danish journalists find bad press ethics to be an increasing problem and attribute this problem to increased pressure in the newsroom.

Abstract:
Today’s political realities of media are alignments. There is no political contestation that does not involve the media. There was a radical change in media institutions from watchdog to involved in power struggles. This is where the media becomes political actors. Media involvement in political contestation is realized by constructing news that benefits certain political parties or candidates. Then the news presented to the public will build discourse that benefits certain parties and candidates. Media alignments with certain candidates can be seen in the 2014 and 2019 presidential election campaigns. Amid in the political interests of the contestants, journalism as the main product of the media is challenged to remain in principle and the journalistic code of ethics. The focus of this research is the headlines news, including photographs in Kompas newspaper, Koran Sindo newspaper, and Media Indonesia newspaper, the 8th and 14th editions of April 2019. With a qualitative approach and using critical language analysis research methods of Roger Fowler et al, this study found. First, the news in Kompas newspaper, Koran Sindo newspaper, and Media Indonesia newspaper in the 2014 and 2019 presidential election campaigns took sides politically, either openly or secretly. Second, the reader must change the perspective of media reality today. The alignment of media politics with certain candidates is a necessity. The two findings have implications for the third finding, there must be a change in the journalistic code of ethics which now seems out of date.

Abstract:
This article explores three national news agencies in Europe (Press Association Group in the United Kingdom, Austria Presse Agentur in Austria and Tidningarnas Telegrambyrå in Sweden) in order to find the reasons why these agencies decided to transform themselves from traditional newswires into diversified media businesses. We ask why these agencies are able to operate under market principles, with substantial profit margins, and also to contribute to a sustainable national media system, while agencies in some other countries struggle. We draw on semi-structured interviews with 26 senior managers of the agencies and use several strategic management frameworks, including five forces and dynamic capabilities. We find that, in all three agencies, early crises led to a sensing of news agencies’ weakened bargaining power with media clients and the decline of industry attractiveness and triggered a timely search for new revenue sources through diversification. These successful new businesses are based on a strong news-agency brand, on technological capabilities, and on resources originating from the agencies’ firm relationship with the news media. We argue that, in all three cases, visionary leadership and an ability to orchestrate a new relationship with media owners have been key capabilities created in these early crises.

Abstract:
This article aims to see the changing characteristics and role of journalism as a new media. The rapid development of technology encourages all parties to move forward, including the mass media. Over time, various conventional mass media companies such as print media began to turn to online media as a means of reporting. Apart from news portals with big names, there are currently many independent news portals or individuals who choose to share information through social media accounts. The problem is focused on how journalists pay attention to the code of ethics in reporting information in the realm of social media. The data were collected through the document study method or literature review and non-participant observation. With literature review, the author takes references and examples from books that are relevant to the research title. The data that has been obtained were analyzed qualitatively. This study concludes that in online media, the writing style is more rigid and similar to conventional media such as newspapers. Meanwhile, in new media, the writing style looks more flexible and the journalist's perspective or personal view on the issues being reported is often more visible.

Abstract:
Broadcasting of criminal news on television constitutes part of freedom of the press to provide information for the public through the print media or electronic media. Broadcasting of criminal news through television describes events of crime as if we directly see from the crime scene. There have been regulation and institution providing for and overseeing broadcasting, namely Law Number 40 Year 1999 regarding the Press and Law Number 32 Year 2002 regarding Broadcasting, the Press Council stipulating “journalists’ code of ethics” and the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission stipulating “Broadcast program standards and broadcasting code of conduct”. The presentation of criminal news by showing the faces and identities of suspects or defendants constitutes a violation of the principles of presumption of innocence, namely someone must be deemed or treated not guilty until there is a court ruling stating that he or she is guilty. In addition, the broadcasting of criminal news affects suspects or defendants in obtaining due process of law, public prosecutors and judges who examine the case. Therefore, it is necessary that the broadcasting of criminal news not violating code of ethics or rules and the rights of suspect or defendant be endeavored.

Abstract:
Given the intense news coverage that mass shootings receive and recent findings on contagion effects, it is important to examine how news media organizations cover these crimes. While reporting the “who” of news is a standard journalistic practice, there is growing debate regarding the extent to which the perpetrators of mass shootings should be named, pictured, and discussed in news media coverage. Within the theoretical framework of agenda-setting, this study examined U.S. newspaper photographic coverage following three major school shootings. Through content analysis of 4,934 photographs from 9 days of newspaper coverage, this study made several key findings about the overall prominence of photo use, changes in photo use during the 3 days following mass shootings, and comparisons between photos of perpetrators and victims. In particular, the study found empirical evidence that on a photos-per-individual basis, the coverage gave more attention to perpetrators than to individual deceased victims by a ratio of 16 to 1. Given contagion effects, this study finding raises serious concerns about current practices in news media publication of perpetrator photos. Although the Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics encourages news media members to seek truth and report it, the code also emphasizes moral imperatives to “balance the public’s need for information against potential harms” and “avoid pandering to lurid curiosity.”

Abstract:
“Who will watch the watchdog” This praise became popular in Pakistan when Geo, one of Pakistan's most-watched television news channels in Pakistan, has many times violated codes of ethics that were proposed by Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) (Pakistan Voice, 2012, p. 2-6). Media plays an important role in our daily lives, as its basic function is to inform, educate and entertain. Today?s world media is getting more and more power because it plays a role of watchdog on politicians, governments, judiciary and our actions and can quickly inform masses and disseminate information across the globe. Therefore, freedom of media is very essential if it plays a constructive and significant role for people living in a democratic country like Pakistan. But if the press itself is not free then how can it play a constructive role or can raise voice for the rights of the citizens. Edmund Burkey (1787) stated that media is the fourth-pillar of the state. He termed it fourth-pillar because of its constructive role in our lives, the press or media can only perform its sacred duties of the fourth estate if it is free and independent in covering different aspects of life, whether it is politics, education, health, religion, war zone or any other important topics. Most importantly, it is only possible if the job is done professionally, ethically and with full responsibility.

Abstract:
Crime news broadcasts on television are a part of press freedom to disseminate information to the public through printed or electronic media. Information delivery through electronic media such as television, particularly crime news, presents overviews of criminal events as if the audiences witness it straight from the crime scene. It shows the fact that. one on hand, crime news is broadcast widely on private television stations, while on the other hand there are rules for broadcasting crime news as regulated in Law Number 40 of 1999 on Press and Law Number 32 of 2002 on Broadcasting. Laws on press and broadcasting also regulate the establishment of Press Council that determines ‘journalist code of ethics’ and the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) which sets the ‘broadcast program standards and broadcasting behavior guidelines’. These institutions supervise news or broadcasting as well as individuals or broadcasters that violate broadcasting rules or code of ethics. Crime news broadcasting that displays the face and identity of suspects or defendants is a violation to the principle of ‘Presumption of innocence’, that an individual should be assumed or considered innocent until the court proves that he/she is guilty. Crime news broadcasts impose effects on the suspects or defendants in receiving ‘due process of law’, and on the public prosecutor and judge investigating the case. Therefore, crime news broadcasting should be sought to not violate the code of ethics or rules as well as the rights of suspects or defendants.

Abstract:
AbstractThe main line of the study is bound to the conditions, demonstrations and effects of colloquiality (colloquialization) parameter that has been applied in the current electronic media communication sphere. Colloquiality as a non-verbal, structural and compositional attribute of a piece of communication is primarily present in the open, semi- and non-official communication contacts with direct, immediate involvement of their participants. In traditional print journalism built on the verified principles of printedness/ writtenness, colloquiality occurs as a secondary, accompanying attribute of the media communication pieces. Regardless of the genre affiliation of the newspaper products, it helps perform their, e.g., documentary, persuasive, captivating, characterizing, relieving or aesthetic functions. Apart from the parameter of printedness, both mainstream and alternative (complementary) online media generally calculate upon the advanced options of the visual code systems. Thus, language-based online newspapers are easily supplemented with simultaneous, additional, or substitutional means and procedures of cinematographic origin, e.g., a surprising choice, dynamic edition, purpose-made superposition of the text, audio and video sequences being applied through hyperlinking, audiovisual effects, etc. Besides, accompanying dialogization and consequent de-officialization of online newspapers are changing conventional characteristics of the journalistic style. The expanding zone of colloquiality loosens the standards of codified language in written/printed communication. Boundaries between the varieties in the framework of language stratification are already easily penetrable. The material base and argument platform of the study consist of author texts published in the Slovak online alternative news media.

Abstract:
When covering societal conflicts, journalists often feel a tension between normative and commercial requirements. Consequently, media coverage has a hybrid character consisting of elements ascribed to both a normative and a commercial media logic. Therefore, analyzing the prevalence of single elements in media coverage reveals only part of the story. Taking nine wage disputes in Germany between 2003 and 2015 as prominent instances of nonviolent conflicts, we aim at revealing the structure of news coverage ( n = 1,181). A cluster analysis unfolded four distinct patterns of conflict coverage. The results indicated that the ideal-type dichotomy between a commercial and a normative media logic is more differentiated: Emotionalization and human interest framing separated patterns into some, which were more aligned to a commercial logic, and others, which were more characteristic for a normative logic. However, negativity, background information, and a hard-facts-first structure played a multifold role with the highest amount of background information being accompanied by the highest levels of negativity. Furthermore, conflict phase (strike vs. bargaining phase), conflict type (low vs. high potential impact on society), and media outlets’ genre (quality vs. tabloid vs. news agency) were identified as antecedents of the coverage patterns.

Abstract:
This article traces the long and antagonistic fashioning of the National Recovery Adminstration's code of practice for the film industry during 1933. The NRA code process publicly exposed resentful fissions within Hollywood, and the oligarchic, if not monopolistic, way in which the major film studios had set up their vertically integrated consolidation of the motion-picture industry in terms of production, distribution and exhibition on a national scale. A media spotlight flooded onto their soundstages and executive suites, and many, including President Franklin Roosevelt, were not pleased with what they saw. The NRA, signed into law in 1933 by Roosevelt, implemented an unprecedented reorganization of the American economy to restore employment to combat the Great Depression. Perhaps most controversially, especially for the union-averse film industry, the NRA established collective bargaining. Though they supported it initially, the major studios would not long abide by the NRA. Throughout 1933, they violated the spirit and letter of the code, ensuring as much as possible that the economic pain and sacrifice of the Great Depression in Hollywood was visited upon artists and technicians, not studio heads and executives. They used the making of the code to attempt to cement and further the advantages they enjoyed while offering little to other interests in the film industry.

Abstract:
Abstract Academics, criminal justice professionals, and news outlets have warned that gang-associated youth use social media to taunt rivals and trade insults in ways that cause offline retaliation. But there is surprisingly little empirical research investigating how gang-associated youth deploy social media in gang conflicts. Criminal justice professionals routinely overstate the violent effects of social media challenges, which further exacerbates criminalization, racial stereotyping, and social inequality. Drawing from two years of ethnographic fieldwork on Chicago’s South Side, this study asks how gang-associated black youth use social media to challenge rivals. Bridging traditional theories of urban violence with emerging media scholarship, I argue that social media disrupt the key impression management practices associated with the “code of the street.” Specifically, gang-associated youth exploit social media to publicly invalidate the authenticity of their rivals’ performances of toughness, strength, and street masculinity. Challengers do so through “cross referencing,” “calling bluffs,” and “catching lacking.” Each strategy differs in its likelihood to catalyze physical retaliation, which is a function of the amount and depth of counter-evidence necessary to refute a given challenge. These findings carry important implications for addressing urban violence, gangs, and inequality in the social media age.

Abstract:
The independence of media signifies an open society based on democratic traditions rather than the dictates of one person. The press can only perform its duty if it is free and independent in its functions, like reporting its news and views. But like other freedoms, it should not be used as an unbridled weapon. It should be subjected to some limitations pro to the integrity of the state and welfare of the people. The media should respect the right of people involved in the news dissemination, follow the common standards of decency and be accountable for the accuracy of their news reports. Media is a double-edged sword. Media must be regulated through a well-thought-out legal regime which should shy away from clear censorship yet put a confine on the behavior of media entities through a code of ethics, good business practices and improvement in the law of Torts, specifically damages.

Abstract:
This study aims to explore discursive changes in current Taiwanese society, with a particular focus on code-mixing in newspaper headlines. Data were collected from three major newspapers catering to different readerships during three time periods (i.e. 1985, 1995, and 2005). The language of Taiwanese newspaper is hybrid and heterogeneous in that local dialect (i.e. Southern Min), English, Japanese, Cantonese, and even Zhuyin (Mandarin Phonetic Symbols) are included in Mandarin news headlines. My analysis has found that over the past two decades, there has been an increase of code-mixing in all three newspapers, In addition, a cross-sectional comparison has revealed that soft news texts (e.g. entertainment news) contain more instances of code-mixing than hard news texts (e.g. political and international news). I argue that this increasing linguistic hybridization found in Taiwanese media texts is not only linked with the indigenization, globalization, marketization, and technologization in current Taiwanese society. More importantly, since language use is a kind of identity-constructing devices, this ongoing discursive change also reflects an emerging new Taiwan identity, which can be characterized by multilingualism, multiculturalism, and multiple identities.

Abstract:
This study aims to examine the role of the press council in enforcing the press law and journalistic code of ethics where digital developments are currently very developed, especially media that utilize new media platforms. Not all online mass media are legal entities and not all news that is conveyed through online media follows a journalistic code of ethics, giving rise to overlapping perceptions and activities due to the lack of understanding of journalists and the public in the midst of easy access to information. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study method, data collection is collected through observation and documentation sourced from literature and document studies that examine the phenomenon of digitalization dynamics around press laws and journalistic codes of ethics. There are a number of efforts from the press council, including enforcing the press law on online mass media by carrying out a number of verification processes including administrative verification, factual verification and content verification. The third verification cannot be carried out because of the constraints of human resources and budget. A mass media that receives a report will be handled and mediated by the press council if the mass media is already a legal entity. Meanwhile, the enforcement of the press code of ethics is carried out by first classifying journalism activities based on whether the mass media is a legal entity or not, then screening complaints of violations of the code of ethics, and reprimanding the problematic mass media to apologize and clarify the misinformation that has been published.
