Abstract:
Background: Biopacemaking is the attempt to replicate sinoatrial node (SAN)-like pacemaker activity in other areas of the heart by manipulating genes involved in pacemaking. Application of this could emulate the electronic pacemaker without the need for implantation of permanent hardware, or directly repair dysfunctional SAN tissue in human disease. We upregulated the transcription factors Tbx18, Tbx3 and the membrane ion exchanger NCX1 in bradycardic subsidiary atrial pacemaker (SAP) tissue which we used as a model of SAN dysfunction. We aimed to show that one or more of these gene targets could improve pacemaker function and alter the molecular character of SAP tissue and thus could potentially be used for the repair of dysfunctional SAN tissue. Methods: SAP tissue was isolated from the right atria of rats and kept beating in culture at 37°C for 48 hours. Recombinant adenoviruses were injected into SAP preparations to upregulate Tbx18, Tbx3 and NCX1 individually. Beating rate, overdrive suppression and pharmacological response to If blockade and β-adrenergic stimulation were measured along with molecular changes in pacemaker and atrial genes and proteins using RT-qPCR and immunohistochemistry. Results: Tbx18 upregulation significantly increased SAP beating rate after 48 hours of culture (a final rate of 141 ± 9 bpm in uninfected SAP tissue versus 215 ± 16 bpm in Ad-Tbx18 infected SAP tissue, p<0.01). It induced upregulation of HCN2 (p<0.01) and RYR2 (p<0.05), downregulation of HCN4 (p<0.05) and no change HCN1, Tbx3, Kv1.5, Kir2.1, Nav1.5, NCX1, Cx43, Cx45, Cav1.2 or Cav3.1. There was also no change in overdrive suppression and no change in response to pharmacology. No increase in beating rate was seen with either Tbx3 or NCX1 upregulation. Tbx3 preparations induced downregulation of the atrial genes Kir2.1 (p<0.01) and Nav1.5 (p<0.05), along with HCN1 (p<0.05), HCN4 (p<0.01), Tbx18 (p<0.05) and NCX1 (p<0.01), upregulated Cx43 (p<0.05) and showed no change in Cx45, RYR2, Kv1.5. NCX1 preparations demonstrated reduced overdrive suppression (p<0.05). Conclusion: Tbx18 showed the most potential for biopacemaking in SAP tissue, however both Tbx3 and NCX1 could be applied as secondary targets to fine tune biopacemaker function. Future work would focus on applying these targets to dysfunctional SAN tissue in larger animals.

Lahneman, William J. "Challenge and response: new threat, new constraints, new Navy." Thesis, Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/28024.

Full text
Abstract:
The apparent reduction in the magnitude of the Soviet threat must not obscure the fact that challenges to the national interests of the United States still remain. This thesis proposes that challenges to U.S. national interests have changed to such a degree that American strategic planners must adopt a new planning paradigm to replace the traditional one based on containment of the Soviet Union. The thesis focuses on naval force and organizational planning over the next ten to fifteen years, a timeframe during which the international environment should undergo a transition to a multipolar balance of power system. The thesis concludes that the Navy of the future can be smaller, but must retain its technological superiority in all areas of warfare. A vigorous research and development effort remains essential, and production of new systems and platforms must continue, albeit in smaller numbers and at higher unit costs. Projection of power ashore will be the principal mission of conventional naval forces. Organizationally, the Navy must expand its intelligence gathering efforts, and must formalize career progressions for strategic planners, international negotiators and legislative affairs subspecialists. The thesis includes a discussion of significant domestic constraints that promise to jeopardize the attainment of the desired force structure

McGlynn, Catherine. "How new is new loyalism?" Thesis, University of Salford, 2004. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/26808/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides an analysis of the manifestos of two political parties in Northern Ireland. These parties are the Progressive Unionist Party (PUP) and the Ulster Democratic Party (UDP), which is now defunct. These parties came to prominence during the peace process that led to the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 and both were termed new loyalist. The phrase new loyalism suggests a novel alternative to the pessimistic and exclusivist ethos of traditional loyalist expression as exemplified by lan Paisley's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). However, a brief survey of the history of labourism in the North-East of Ireland reveals that there have been previous attempts to form a political party with a social democratic manifesto, an agenda that could supplant sectarianism as the main organising principle of Protestant working class politics. Some of these movements have emerged from within the same loyalist paramilitary groupings who were responsible for the formation of the new loyalist parties. The purpose of the research on which this thesis was based was to ascertain if the PUP and the UDP represented a genuinely new and different political direction in loyalism, which could outlast uncertainty over constitutional matters. A framework to test the parties was constructed from two separate literature reviews. The first was a review of literature defining unionism, loyalism and new loyalism. The second considered the academic debate on reconciling differentiated citizenship rights within a polity. Data was then collected on the development and manifestos of the two parties and qualitative interviews were conducted with fifteen members of the PUP. The thesis concludes that the parties were both affected by a number of external factors, in particular the growing disaffection of unionists with the Agreement. However, it must also be concluded that neither party developed an agenda that transcended sectarianism.

Abstract:
Writing is critical to two main anthropological goals: to communicate useful knowledge about humanity and society; and to stimulate interest, discussion, and action on issues that are of societal import. To achieve these goals anthropologists must write in accessible styles for diverse audiences. In this paper, we review the work of five popular nonfiction writers to determine the extent to which their approachable writing styles are compatible with anthropological rigor and nuance. While none of these authors meets all of our hopes for anthropological analysis, each does manage to blend some elements of scholarship with a readable style. We therefore highlight some of their stylistic approaches in the hope that these might help anthropologists engage more effectively in public debate.

Abstract:
Like elsewhere in Europe, the tides of nationalist right-wing rhetoric in Sweden have become instrumental in generating a wave of anti-liberal and anti-immigration sentiments in politics and media. In particular, one branch of right-wing alternative media has become a breeding ground for normalizing such rhetoric. Does the anti-immigration stance in such media disguise racist inclinations? In this thesis we examine the discourse of three right-wing alternative media sites in Sweden to explore the possible employment of different types of racism in their articles. By taking the constructivist viewpoint and adopting the post-colonial conceptions of the 'Self' and the 'Other', racist discourse was analyzed and characterized as either biological or cultural. From these two theories, we derived concepts concerning descriptions of contemporary and ideal Swedish society that will be used as further indicators of racist discourses. In this single case study, 94 articles from Fria Tider, Nya Tider, and Samhällsnytt were analyzed on the topics of immigration, integration and crime through a qualitative content analysis. The results show that most of the articles contain cultural racist discourse.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the culture of YouTube in Brazil and its role in the broader Brazilian media environment. It argues that Brazilian YouTube represents Brazilian culture in new ways, helping to change how the nation sees itself. It closely examines three highly popular Brazilian YouTube channels: Canal KondZilla, whinderssonnunes and Porta dos Fundos, as well as their cross-over productions for television. The analysis shows that these channels combine the culture of YouTube with existing television references and Brazilian popular culture expressions to produce more progressive representations of class, race, and regional identity, and to discuss controversial topics from new perspectives.

Svozilík, Jiŕí. "Photonic entanglement : new sources and new applications." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/284225.

Full text
Abstract:
Non-classical correlations, usually referred as entanglement, are ones of the most studied and discussed features of Quantum Mechanics, since the initial introduction of the concept in the decade of 1930s. Even nowadays, a lot of efforts, both theoretical and experimental, are devoted in this topic, that covers many distinct areas of physics, such as a quantum computing, quantum measurement, quantum communications, solid state physics, chemistry and even biology. The fundamental tasks that one should consider related to the entanglement are: -How to create quantum entangled states. -How to maintain entanglement during propagation against sources of decoherence. -How to effectively detect it. -How to employ the benefits that entanglement offers. This thesis, divided into four chapters, concentrates on the first and last tasks considered above. In Chapter 1, a brief introduction and overview of what it is entanglement is given, starting with the famous paper of Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen, and continuing with John Bell's formulation of the so-called Bell's inequalities. We define here general concepts about entangled quantum states and introduce important entanglement measures, that are later used all over the thesis. In this chapter, sources of entangled particles (namely photons) are also mentioned. The importance is put on sources based on the nonlinear process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The last part of this chapter is then dedicated to a list of applications that benefit from the use of engangled states. Chapter 2 is devoted to the systematic study of the generation of entangled and non-entangled photon pairs in semiconductor Bragg reflection waveguides. Firstly, we present a source of photon pairs with a spectrally uncorrelated two-photon amplitude, achieved by a proper tailoring of the geometrical and material dispersions via structural design of waveguides. Secondly, Bragg reflection waveguides are designed in a scuh way, that results in the generation of spectrally broadband paired photons entangled in the polarization degree of freedom. Finally, we present experimental results of entangled photon pairs generation in this type of structures. In Chapter 3, we explore the feasibility of the generation of photon pairs entangled in the spatial degree of freedom, i.e. in the orbital angular momentum (OAM). Firstly, we examine how to create a highly multidimensional Hilbert space using OAM modes obtained in a chipred-poled nonlinear bulk crystals. Here, we show, how an increase of the chirp of the poling can effectively increase the Schmidt number by several orders of magnitude. Secondly, we investigate periodically poled silica glass fibres with a ring-shpaed core, that are capable to support the generation of simple OAM modes. The final Chapter 4 is dedicated to the Anderson localization and quantum random walks. At the beginning of this chapter, we present an experimental proposal for the realization of a discrete quantum random walks using the multi-path Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a spatial light modulator, that allows us to introduce different types of statistical or dynamical disorders. And secondly, we show how the transverse Anderson localization of partially coherent light, with a variable first-order degree of coherence, can be studied making use of entangled photon pairs.

Carter, Jessica. "An examination of Australian news coverage of Papua New Guinea." Thesis, Department of Media and Communications, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/7200.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines Australian news coverage of Papua New Guinea, a country with which Australia shares geographic proximity and strong historical ties. Specifically, this study examines the coverage of PNG by The Australian and The Sydney Morning Herald newspapers from January 01 until June 30, 2010. This work aims to demonstrate that PNG is a neglected news region. This neglect – in terms of quality reporting – has produced a limited and fragmentary portrayal of PNG in the Australian media. In this context, this study observes that the majority of news stories about PNG tend to lack analysis and contextual background. By examining the process of news framing and news values, this thesis suggests that the disproportionate emphasis on events associated with crime, chaos, disaster, and corruption has constructed PNG as a fragile, suffering and dependent society. The key methodologies used in this thesis are content analysis, and indepth interviews with a selected number of Australian journalists currently or previously based in PNG. The thesis forms part of a much broader examination of the changing trends in international news coverage of developing countries, particularly the Asia-Pacific.

Abstract:
This study aims to analyze the socio-economic characteristics, living and working conditions, educational profiles and the future expectations of the child workers, who have been living in tents for many years and working as agricultural workers at Karagö
ç
er and Kapikö
y areas of Tuzla Municipality (KarataS District) of Adana Province since the early 90s after having been forced to vacate their villages in Sirnak. Thesis tries to expose the poverty, deprivation and social exclusion experienced by families and children presently living in tents in Karagö
ç
er and Kapikö
y. It is also aimed at exposing the ways in which these people are deprived of their social and political rights as citizens. The main research question of the study is the motives behind the child labour observed in Karagö
ç
er and Kapikö
y. The study has found that the phenomenon of child labour in this area is the direct consequence of poverty, deprivation, social exclusion and denial of citizenship rights that these families had to face as a result of forced migration early in the 90s. Therefore, the study underlines, in conceptual terms, how their unfavourable circumstances lead to deep child poverty and consequently child labour and thesis also tries to bring attention to the children&

poverty, deprivation, social exclusion and lack of citizenship rights. In this respect, the theory section of the thesis focuses on the relation of child labour and child poverty within the conceptualization of new poverty, internal displacement (forced migration), social exclusion and citizenship rights. One of the main argument of this thesis is that children from Sirnak who work in fields in Tuzla constitutes a different category of child labour. Even though they are paid child workers working in the agricultural sector and they live like migrant seasonal agricultural workers, they are not, since they are settled in the region for a long time. Another important argument of the study is that families of these children after the evacuation of their village did not migrate to urban areas like most of the internally displaced people did but moved to rural areas. In this sense, they are also in disadvantaged condition compared to other internally displaced people since they can not benefit from many social services, which is easy to reach in urban settings. Therefore, this study makes clear that the children and their families examined in this study are the part of the worst form of poverty in Turkey.

Abstract:
Ever since the laborious consultation process to set the National Greenhouse Response Strategy (1991-1992), stakeholder 'consultation' has been something Australian governments do. Or attempt to do. A recent trend in NSW in particular has been to expand the concept and practice of consultation to multi-party, collaborative decision-making, also referred to as participatory democracy. One such initiative officially begun in August 1997 is the River Management Committee (RMC) exercise. For this tremendous outlay of financial and human resources, the government is taking a punt that the committee will deliver better decisions, and more timely actions, on river flows and water quality in each of the major regulated river valleys in the state. The set up and first year of operation of the RMC exercise is the subject of this thesis. Specifically it examines the design of the process and its appropriateness to the task at hand; the reality of consensus decision-making amongst people with opposing views; the democratic ideal of participants learning to be 'other directed' in terms of putting aside their own positions to work for the common good; and affordability of such exercises from both the government and non-government participants' points of view. The themes emerging from this thesis have become the focus for further research.

The high number of working parents in the U.S. means that there are millions of child in need to care during working hours. Research shows that the quality of this care is of high importance in a child's development, both in the short-term and the long-term. States have used a variety of policy tools to regulate child care and to attempt to improve the quality of care. Louisiana has recently implemented a new policy called the Quality Rating System. Directors of centers in Orleans Parish, Louisiana, were interviewed to determine the impact of participation in QRS. Centers are struggling to meet the requirements and feel that changes need to be made for the program to have a better outcome.

Abstract:
The Gastroenterology (GI) clinic at Sanford Health anticipates an increase in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) based on the 2012 Centers for Disease Control (CDC) screening recommendations. With a disproportionately high prevalence in the baby-boomer population, 75% of all documented HCV cases, the CDC recommended a ?one-time testing of all persons born during 1945-1965 without prior ascertainment of HCV risk? (CDC, 2012a). The purpose of this practice improvement project was to refine the existing workflow of the GI clinic when caring for and managing patients with HCV. The Plan, Do, Study, Act method was followed to improve the processes and address the clinic goals. The project first assessed the existing referral protocol for hepatitis C to improve the quality of care for HCV patients, to increase the clinic?s efficiency, and to identify opportunities for improvement. HCV is a complicated, intense disease process, necessitating chart reviews, patient education, and depression monitoring. To meet these time commitments the department added a new role, the designated hepatitis C nurse. The hepatitis C nurse would serve as a liaison for all HCV patients and providers. The assessment further identified an incomplete process within the referral system. During the pre-appointment chart review for new hepatitis C referrals, many required tests were incomplete. To address the gap with referrals from primary care, a brochure containing a hepatitis C screening algorithm was created. The assessment also identified a need for depression monitoring. To provide safe, up-to-date, treatment monitoring for depression in patients, the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) was implemented. The inclusion of PHQ-9 monitoring by the hepatitis C nurse has helped the GI clinic reach its goals for administration compliance. iv Staff members and providers have reported positive impacts at the clinic after the implementation of the new change processes at the GI clinic. Patients have expressed positive satisfaction with the services, particularly the ease of communicating with the GI clinic and consistent personnel since the implementation.

Abstract:
Swedish school today is a mixture of children who come from different countries and speak different languages. Due to conflicts and war raging in various parts of the world, the refugee stream of people seeking asylum in Sweden has put much pressure on the schools around the country. Studies show that immigrant children fall behind in the education and that students whose first language is not Swedish do not reach the knowledge requirements and goals for English to the same degree of success as other groups of students. The aim for this thesis was to investigate what teachers in a K-3 English classrooms in Sweden do to support immigrant students, and what can be found in previous research to explain such poor performance. The aim was also to explore what methods teachers report using and how these methods are connected to Lgr11 and previous research. The use of Swedish instead of the target language when teaching English seems to be dominating in the schools. Since research found shows that children tend to use their first language when learning additional languages, the use of Swedish becomes demanding and confusing for the immigrant students: they end up having to learn a new language in a new language.

Abstract:
Political Science
Ph.D.
The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the burden-sharing behavior of new NATO members and the impact of enlargement on NATO burden-sharing. Qualitative and quantitative methods are used to test several hypotheses. The findings suggest that large NATO members are burden-sharing at a greater rate than smaller NATO members when looking at military expenditures and air contributions to NATO missions, in accordance with the logic of collective action. Contribution of troops to NATO missions depends on the mix of private and public benefits received, in accordance to the joint product model. The findings support the hypothesis that new NATO members are burden-sharing at a greater rate than older NATO members. An analysis of the burden-sharing behavior of NATO's new members reveals that new NATO members have demonstrated the willingness to contribute to NATO missions, but are often constrained by their limited capabilities. However, new member contributions to NATO have improved and, in comparison to older NATO members, the new members are doing quite well. Finally, NATO expansion did not lead to greater free-riding behavior in NATO.

In a dynamic and competitive global environment, many companies realize that continuous development and introduction of new products are key activities to their survival and growth. One of today’s biggest challenges to businesses involves knowing how to act in a world in which both the frame and the basis of competition are constantly changing, and where restructuring and portfolio shifting are central activities for capturing a fair share of global growth. Both the fast pace of technological innovation and the rising affluence of developing economies present businesses with risks and opportunities, and it is not only important that companies pay attention to the launch of top-notch products in developed markets, but also mandatory that they know how to launch old news to new markets. Using the Brazilian market as an example, this dissertation sought to study how multinational companies have been using advertising in the launch of new product categories and subcategories that are already sold elsewhere to new geographies. After reviewing the literature available, developing propositions, and evaluating those with the help of three case studies, it was possible to verify some linearity between the cases and the literature studied. These included the search for category legitimation preceding that of brand legitimation; the usage of expert sources to legitimate new categories; the usage of argument based appeals; and the advertising of more than one product feature per ad. Nevertheless, given some discrepancies noticeable between what was observed in Brazil and the literature consulted, it was also possible to verify that the way advertising cues are conducted in new geographies likewise depends on the competitive scenario faced, as well as on country specific economic and cultural variants.

The U.S. Military develops and fields infantry clothing and equipment (ICE) to protect ground warfighters against myriad environmental and man-made battlefield threats. ICE also augments physical activities to overcome identified battlefield deficiencies that will increase survivability, lethality, mobility and sustainability to improve combat effectiveness. More often than not, the maximum performance capabilities engineered into newly fielded ICE are not fully utilized to benefit the military user. We examine the ICE training problem for the United States Marine Corps (USMC) to identify practical and strategic changes in instruction, process, and procedures to help the Marine realize the full performance potential of new ICE issued to him/her. The improved ICE training strategy recommends implementing six corrective actions, which collectively increase Marines' ability to notice ICE training, improve their ability to understand its training message, and reinforce newly gained ICE knowledge to habitually use ICE correctly. The training approach principles should be applicable to the United States Army whose Soldiers similarly experience under utilized capabilities from their combat clothing and equipment.

American manufacturing is experiencing a modest renaissance. U.S. firms are choosing to re-shore manufacturing jobs not out of their sense of patriotism, but because it makes good business sense. The costs of transportation and overseas labor are increasing, opening the door for domestic production. Political leaders are embracing the prospects for skilled, living wage jobs; President Obama has made manufacturing one of the central tenets of his economic recovery plan. This has important implications for cities, which stand to benefit from new investment and increased employment opportunities. However, important questions linger for planners: where will manufacturing jobs materialize within the urban fabric? Are factories even viable within the core cities of industrial regions, where there is the greatest need? If so, what physical planning strategies should those cities be pursuing in order to retain, attract, and increase the number of manufacturing jobs within their borders? This research begins with a history of urban production, from the Industrial Revolution through the present day. Emerging trends are assessed and synthesized into a new model for urban industrial development. That model is tested with a detailed examination of Louisville, Kentucky, a place that embodies the renewed efforts to re-industrialize cities with a manufacturing past. Urban manufacturing typologies are presented that describe the urban forms in Louisville at large, and within the Park Hill industrial corridor in particular. A unified set of design principles is presented and matched to the urban manufacturing typologies, focusing on verticality, mixed uses, transparency, sustainability, connectivity, and adaptability. Finally, the thesis concludes with an assessment of the most pressing challenges and opportunities facing the implementation of the Neo-Industrial City model.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with synthesis and characterization of newoligothiophenes and derivatives thereof, for use as organicsemiconductors in optical and electronic applications, such asfield-effect transistors and light-emitting diodes. Much workis devoted to the development of new synthetic strategies forinteresting building blocks, to beused for synthesizing suchmaterials. One series of regio-defined oligothiophenes, up tothe octamer, has been prepared and evaluated. Photoluminescencequantum efficiencies of these were 22-31 % in solution, butdropped to 2-5 % in the solid state. Another project deals withthe development of oligothiophenes with in-chain chirality. These may find use in polarized lightemitting diodes. Finally, two oligothienyl-substituted porphyrins have been synthesizedand are currently evaluated for use in light-emitting diodesand possibly in solar cells.

Ozten, Ulku. "New Monumentality." Master's thesis, METU, 2005. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/2/12606932/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
&ldquo
New monumentality&rdquo
is a term which was first introduced to architectural discourse by Sigfried Giedion, Jose Luis Sert, and Fernand Lé
ger right after the post-World War II in the early forties. The effect of the term comes from the polemical power of reformulation of the accustomed category &ldquo
monument&rdquo
within the field of the modern architecture. In this way, as it is shaped by the three authors, for the first time &ldquo
New Monumentality&rdquo
had been identified as a modern task under the name of Nine Points on Monumentality in 1943. Therefore, this thesis is mainly grounded on this significant text that is a primary manifestation of the need for the new monumentality. On these bases, that the manifesto is stressed an effort to determine the ethics of the post war modern architecture regarding: historicism, functionalism, and representation. This thesis seeks to clarify the self-critical frame which is unfolded by the manifesto within the context of the modern architecture. Thus, the first one of the three objectives of this thesis is to clarify the concept of new monumentality
the second one is to locate its position in the history of modern architecture
and the third one is to differentiate proposed and unintended outcomes of this movement within the contemporary discourses of architecture.

In the Lives, Vasari advises the artist to aim his arrows high, and above the mark which he intends to hit. In that way the aspiring artist compensates for the fact that the arrow seems always to fall short of the target. Vasari's advice was given to artists whose goal it was to represent nature and, particularly, the human body. And since Vasari felt that no artist would ever come as close to representing the body as perfectly as Michelangelo, one could do no better than to place the efforts of Michelangelo in their sights, and aim at surpassing him.

Abstract:
When I observed Japan from a distance for the first time, I found a similarity between Japanese society and the idea of 'Utopia, 1 and I became interested in society as subject matter. Researching Plato and Thomas More's ideas of 'utopia 1 was the starting point of my research. When I realized Utopia is indeed a place without freedom, I became interested in the other 'possible world/ a world different from our reality. I have been obsessed with the idea, and I began making artworks related to the idea. 'Heterotopia 1 seemed to have a strong connection with the 'possible world, 1 and Michel Foucault became essential for my theoretical study. I spent a year researching on the theory, which later became the foundation of my studio practice. Along with these theoretical studies, I researched photographs of children which were related to the subject of my digital practice. By analyzing the work, I developed and understanding my practice. I improved the interdisciplinary aspects of my work by researching related artworks and films, and developed advanced techniques in digital media and collage. After studying the theory and writing the proposal for the Professional Doctorate programme, I found it difficult time for me to organize my ideas and relate these thoughts to my practice. The critical reviews helped me to reconsider my work and its presentation. While concentrating on my study and practice, I collaborated with other artists and designers in professional practice. I also curated a group exhibition, and the experience expanded my art practice in a new way.
