Abstract:
The monograph is devoted to the pathogenesis, clinic and treatment of patients with femoral hernia. The anatomy of the formed femoral canal, hernia location options, classifications, clinic and diagnosis of uncomplicated and complicated femoral hernia are described. Data on the possibility of instrumental methods (X-ray, ultrasound, CT, as well as laser spectroscopy) for assessing the state of the periosteum of the pubic bone are presented. A historical review of operations in patients with femoral hernia is given. A method for the treatment of uncomplicated femoral hernia with a description of a new variant of femoral canal plastic surgery in the destruction of the periosteum of the pubic bone is proposed. The tactics and technique of operations in patients with a strangulated hernia with a simple and complicated course are described. The results of treatment are presented depending on the methods used and options for completing operations. Designed for surgeons, students, residents, postgraduates and researchers engaged in the study of problems of experimental and clinical herniology.

Abstract:
Chapter 7 completes the discussion of alternatives to Literalism. It presents the view that the terms are used literally in the unexpected domains, but with distinct reference. The view has two main variants. The Technical-Behaviorist variant holds that they refer to patterns of behavior in the new domains. Dennett’s Intentional Stance is pressed into service as a familiar way to articulate this variant. The Exsanguinated Property variant holds that they refer to quasi-cognitive properties of some sort. Homuncular functionalism is a familiar way of articulating this variant. It argues that both variants fail to justify the distinction in reference that they propose between uses for humans and for nonhumans. It summarizes the benefits of Literalism and its strength relative to the three alternative views discussed in Chapters 5–7.

Slack, Jonathan. 3. Mutations and gene variants. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/actrade/9780199676507.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
All gene variants originate as mutations. Most variants in the genome of any given individual are not new mutations but have been inherited from previous generations. ‘Mutations and gene variants’ shows that mutations can occur in any cell of the body, but in order to be inherited they must occur in the DNA of the reproductive cells. There are numerous genetic diseases caused by a single mutation in one gene, and the examples considered here are cystic fibrosis, haemophilia, achondroplasia, and Holt-Oram Syndrome. In such cases, the inheritance of the abnormal gene variant follows simple Mendelian rules. The origin of cancer is explained as a combination of mutations occurring in a single cell of the body. Inherited gene variants predisposing to cancer do so because they reduce the number of new mutations required.

Marvin, Carolyn. When Old Technologies Were New. Oxford University Press, 1990. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195063417.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In the history of electronic communication, the last quarter of the nineteenth century holds a special place, for it was during this period that the telephone, phonograph, electric light, wireless, and cinema were all invented. In When old Technologies Were New, Carolyn Marvin explores how two of these new inventions--the telephone and the electric light--were publicly envisioned at the end of the nineteenth century, as seen in specialized engineering journals and popular media. Marvin pays particular attention to the telephone, describing how it disrupted established social relations, unsettling customary ways of dividing the private person and family from the more public setting of the community. On the lighter side, she describes how people spoke louder when calling long distance, and how they worried about catching contagious diseases over the phone. A particularly powerful chapter deals with telephonic precursors of radio broadcasting--the "Telephone Herald" in New York and the "Telefon Hirmondo" of Hungary--and the conflict between the technological development of broadcasting and the attempt to impose a homogenous, ethnocentric variant of Anglo-Saxon culture on the public. While focusing on the way professionals in the electronics field tried to control the new media, Marvin also illuminates the broader social impact, presenting a wide-ranging, informative, and entertaining account of the early years of electronic media.

Abstract:
The eventful career of the ‘Velesian readings’ constitute an instructive chapter in the history of New Testament exegesis. Around 1570, Pedro Fajardo, Marquis of los Vélez, jotted down some 2,000 variant readings in a printed New Testament, giving later researchers the impression that these annotations resulted from a persistent perusal of Greek manuscripts. The original annotated book was never found, but the Velesian readings found their way into many editions, for example Walton’s 1657 Polyglot. Eventually, the readings were shown to be retranslations from Latin into Greek, intended to vindicate the Latin Vulgate against the received Greek text. This chapter traces the role scholars played in their unmasking. It shows that variant readings were of paramount importance in theological controversy.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the genetics and inheritance of CF. Different mutations have different effects on the CFTR protein, some leading to no CFTR being expressed at all and others to a poorly functioning variant. In the new era of mutation-specific therapies, the specific mutation expressed in a patient has important implications for their treatment.
