Abstract:
Abstract Safety pillars are made around mines as a protection measure. This is especially important in salt mines where the surrounding waters are most hazardous. Without maintaining safe conditions the mine may be water-flooded as it was the case in one of the Polish mine “Wapno“. An original technology linking pipeline injection and hole injection methods has been used for the reconstruction of a safety pillar in the Salt Mine “Wieliczka“. This solution turned out to be successful when on 13 April 1992 the mine was saved from flooding after a disastrous water flux to the transverse working Mina. The presented technology can be efficiently used in various mines at the stage of designing, though their exploitation to the closing stage.

Abstract:
Although the restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic significantly reduced or completely eliminated the manifestations of artistic life, human ingenuity and simply necessity made it possible to transfer many offline cultural events and events to the online environment. Free online broadcasts from concerts such as the Berlin Philharmonic, opera performances from the New York Metropolitan, as well as theater and music concerts have gained in popularity worldwide. Film production companies have begun to make films available online. The offer of video or VOD (Netflix, YouTube, Twitch, Showmax, Paramount Play) has increased (Upper, 2020). Because, at least in the first phase of the pandemic, the revenue from the cinemas fell, VOD services could watch hits, e.g. in the United States — Emma, and in Poland — Hejter. Virtual tours were offered by well-known museums, such as the Louvre in Paris and international cultural heritage sites, including the Roman Colosseum. Since the outbreak of the epidemic there has also been a rapid increase in online gaming traffic. Finally, after the total suspension, sports competitions, e.g. football matches, came back, but without the participation of the fans, albeit like stand-ups with played recordings of the stadium’s fans’ reactions. In this way, what we call entertainment or popular culture has been domesticated and is done through the media. In this article I review the possibilities that new technologies now offer for domesticated culture in new circumstances forced by a pandemic COVID-19.

Abstract:
The paper aims at examining the significance of new media for redefining meanings of social competences. As social actors witness new social situations in the technologically mediated world, they start seeking for alternative means of enhancing their social position and adapting to the altering reality of everyday life. New media users learn to manage the different ways of managing and broadcasting their ‘self’. Streaming their lives online they navigate networked audiences, trying to find balance between the public and the private. Digital networking platforms are being used not only for the purpose of sociability but also to negotiate their image and create perceptions of ‘self’. However, the majority of them do not possess the skills needed to efficiently maneuver through mediated social networks. Moreover new media are considered to create conditions for the eruption of cultural narcissism and addiction to new technologies. In the paper attention is drawn to the tensions related to the significance of this new set of social competences and potential drawbacks of the development of the analyzed type of cultural practices.

Yet new technologies expand access to information for the visually impaired; they reduce or even eliminate their reading disability and introduce the visually impaired to information culture. However, this has to be based on a possibility, enshrined in law, of using various materials in alternative formats and with the help of technology. The present paper, based an analysis of documents and participant observation, examines questions concerning key legal solutions regulating access of people with visual impairments to sources of information, and information and communication technologies, as well as the specifi city of the cognitive process of behaviour of visually impaired users. The author presents alternative formats of library material and supporting technologies, particularly modern digital version of the Braille system, tactile graphics and audio description. She also examines the evolution of libraries for the blind. The paper ends with suggestions concerning libraries for visually impaired users and well as proposal of research discourses.

Abstract:
Strategia rekrutacji i selekcji oparta na nowoczesnych technologiach wymaga doświadczonego i kompetentnego zespołu, dwie niewątpliwe korzyści to: ograniczenie długości procesu w czasie i możliwość obniżenia kosztów.

Abstract:
This masters thesis aims to assess and evaluate the potential of home based energy storage systems for the final user. In theoretical part it therefore describes the historical development of the European power sector with the purpose of determining, what was the impact of this development on products offered by energy providers to the final consumers of electricity. Findings from this analysis are then used to design a model, which is introduced and described in the practical part of the masters thesis. This model is afterwards used to assess the profitability of home batteries implementation by three different types of households and also to determine, what are the key drivers and constraints for the adoption of energy storage systems by households.

Abstract:
A high temperature integrated sensor interface is proposed. The sensor interface has a fully differential time domain architecture. This approach offers the advantage of better thermal stability compared to typical analog based architectures. The sensor interface is based on Injections Locked Oscillators (ILO) used as phase shifters. A pair of ILOs converts the sensor output voltage into a phase shift difference which is then digitized using a time to digital converter. The sensor interface output depends only on the ratio of its parameters values rather than their absolute values thus leading to a low temperature dependency. The sensor interface is fabricated using a 0.18µm Partially-Depleted Silicon on Insulator technology (PD-SOI) from XFAB which is chosen for its thermal robustness. Measurements show that the sensor interface achieves a thermal variation of 178ppm/°C over ±60mV input full scale and a thermal variation of 65ppm/°C over ±40mV input full scale over a wide operation temperature range extended from -20°C to 220°C

Abstract:
Through the examples of the mid-hudson valley and the american high technology centers, this work asks the question of the influence of high technology activities in regional development: are they a key, or one of the keys, of the regional development? how are they created and how do high technology centers grow? this analysis shows that these activities expand in preference in an existing industrial area and it reveals the factors that promote creation and development of high technology centers: men, academic and governmental institutions, entrepreneurial fever, business quality and quality of life. The answer to this question about the influence of high technology activities in development is cautious, because some conditions have to be gathered to fight the perverse effects of heterogoneity and the tendanccy to concentrate these activities. The mid-hudson valley, located south of new york state, at about hundred kilometers from the huge newyorker metropolis, is the starting point and the clew of this thought, since it is a high technology center with 40 000 employes in that sector, nevertheless dominated by one company: ibm. The overall study is completed by detailed analysis of the dominating firm and by an analysis of the relations between the region and the near metropolis. Four original surveys, regarding high technology firms, colleges and universities, high technology centers, financial services, complete the information, collected in bibliography, statistics ans interviews

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the last twenty years there’s been a dramatic increase in the amount of technogies available for the thoracic surgeon. Robotics and Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery are nowadays essential components of the thoracic surgeon’s technical and cultural baggage. These new technologies have also pushed forward the boundaries of costs thus it becomes necessary to define the appropriateness. Prognostic factors may emerge as key drivers in selecting the correct procedure for each specific patient, in accordance with what is demanded by the so-called “precision medicine”. Our research have pointed out some important prognostic factors that could at some point help to speculate the direction our kind of surgery should tail in order to correctly assign every single patient to the most advantageous procedure.

Abstract:
Man's relationship with his environment seems to evolve following a pattern similar to that of the discoveries of science and technology, which bring about new ways to interact with the world. Now in the age of biotechnology and nanotechnology, of digital networks and new audiovisual media, our capacity to act in the world mutates accordingly. In their practice of new media in order to produce their works, many artists question the complexity of the ecological and technological systems that surround us. When they seem to criticize these technologies or try to create new systemic models, is it not often their way of encouraging us to claim ownership of our very habitats? This dissertation studies the ways in which ecology may be revisited through the use of new media and technologies in contemporary artistic works. Our hypothesis is that a study of the relation between art, the environment(s) where it is displayed and the new media it uses may help us rethink the way we inhabit the world. Tentatively, we suggest the word « ecopoiesis » to qualify the creative processes in which ecology is at stake. The goal is to come up with a notion of the complex and systemic relations that the artists, the works of art and the audience have with their environment

Full text
Abstract:
Recently, the advancement and the development of new technologies is shaping and establishing new frontiers in neuropsychological rehabilitation. In particular, the use of touchscreen technology, together with the use of mobile devices, is giving new opportunities for the development of innovative programs of rehabilitation tailored to the specific needs of patients The overview of software for rehabilitation today is wide, but the poor availability of such software for Italian population and specifically designed for people with cognitive impairments, some years ago, led me to the development of the first mobile devices’ software for cognitive rehabilitation. The aim of this dissertation is to describe the development process and the efficacy evaluation of this software, the Padua Rehabilitation Tool (PRT). Initially will be described and analyzed the base for every cognitive intervention: the plasticity of brain. In Section1 I will report a study for understanding the relationship between performance in computerized exercises and the performance in standardized tests. None before investigated the relationship between this two different measures of outcome. The perceived relationship is not necessarily automatically provided, thus, it is important to examine how exercises and standardized tests are related: if improvement in therapy exercises mirrors improvement in standardized test. In Section 2, I will describe the development of the PRT and the use of this software in population with different etiologies. Originally, the PRT was designed for people with dementia and thus the most important study of efficacy was conducted on this population. Lastly, given the flexibility and the variety of exercises and cognitive domains engaged by the PRT it was possible to deliver a cognitive rehabilitation to people with acquired brain injury. I will describe the effects of a cognitive rehabilitation with PRT in several single cases including patients after stroke, with a history of traumatic brain injury and an early post-coma rehabilitation.

Abstract:
The Viennese music theoretician Heinrich Schenker opposed modernity during his entire life. At first, this opposition applied to new technologies as well. Despite his skepticism, he purchased a radio shortly after the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (RAVAG) started broadcasting in October 1924 and soon became an avid radio listener. Schenker quickly grasped the advantages of this new transmission medium and used it to further his own interests, aided by personal contacts with the RAVAG. In 1928, his associate Otto Erich Deutsch delivered a radio lecture co-authored with Schenker about the goals of the “Archive for Photograms of Musical Master Manuscripts” which was founded at Schenker’s instigation. In 1934, the RAVAG sponsored a competition, awarding the best text to a song fragment by Franz Schubert which in turn was discovered by Deutsch. Since the textless fragment lacks the final measures, Schenker had previously composed an ending for the song which was also performed on the radio.

Suero Montero, Calkin, Naska Goagoses, Heike Winschiers-Theophilus, Nicolas Pope, Tomi Suovuo, Erkki Rötkönen, and Erkki Sutinen. "SUPPORTING ACADEMIC ENGAGEMENT THROUGH IMMERSIVE TECHNOLOGIES." In International Conference on Education and New Developments. inScience Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36315/2022v2end022.

Full text
Abstract:
"Academic engagement refers to the overall quality of students’ involvement with schooling, including their activities and goals, as well as their connections with peers and educators. Much research has examined the facilitation and support of students’ academic engagement within physical classroom settings. However, the field of education has been experiencing a shift from the status quo modus operandi of face-to-face instruction to online synchronous/asynchronous instruction, which has impacted students’ engagement. This change has increased the demand to develop and adapt digital technologies that can support the engagement of students throughout online learning processes and their adjustment to the new educational norm. Fundamental research on the development and implementation of immersive technologies could provide a way forward, however we maintain that the development of such technologies needs to be guided by current pedagogical and psychological theories. Hence, in this paper, first we examine empirically substantiated frameworks of engagement and identify aspects that require consideration when developing new immersive technologies. Then, we present a succinct review of the technology-enhanced learning environments literature to determine how engagement has (or has not) been supported through immersive technologies, i.e., virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and 3D volumetric video. Finally, having embarked on the development of our in-house technology, an immersive 3D video prototype, we present the technology setup alongside the co-creation process that we are implementing to guide its development. Based on pedagogical and psychological research, we highlight several vital factors substantiating students’ engagement, including the significance of the teacher’s role and the importance of teacher-student and student-student interactions. These factors serve to guide our qualitative data collection during co-creation sessions to uncover students’ and teachers’ new perspectives of engagement in relation to the affordances that immersive technologies should offer. Our work presents insights to educators, technology designers and researchers about important educational frameworks and considerations directing our development of immersive technologies in support of academic engagement."

Abstract:
As digital technologies continue gaining momentum in Africa and lower-income countries, more and more tax authorities are adopting them to improve their core functions and collect revenue more efficiently. This paper reviews recent literature on using technology for tax administration. Technology has the potential to improve tax collection in three areas: identifying the tax base, monitoring compliance, and facilitating compliance. But even the most user-friendly technology will hardly function without basic infrastructure and a stable internet connection. The potential benefits of new technology are further hampered by resistance from taxpayers and collectors, an unsupportive regulatory environment and lack of strategy for adoption by institutions. We close by proposing reforms to ensure investments in new technology improve efficiency and revenue collection.

Abstract:
New digital technologies are now being widely used in Africa and lower-income countries (LICs). This has had an impact on tax administration, which has been increasingly digitised. Specifically Digital Financial Services (DFS) and digital IDs can improve tax administration. They have the potential to identify taxpayers more easily, communicate with them better, enforce and monitor compliance, and reduce compliance costs. While the potential is clear, existing literature indicates some of the barriers. Take-up of digital technology is still low due to barriers. Also, when taking up the technology, taxpayers often tend to adopt various measures to minimise tax payments. Within tax administrations there are challenges to accessibility and use of quality data. Mistakes can be made when launching digitisation, and there are regulatory and political barriers for effective use of digital technology. Given this context, this paper summarises key questions that are relevant for research and policy development to make more effective use of digital technology in tax administration in Africa and LICs.
